Bunday morning traffic.

Amos is mildly annoyed that he has to wait to give Mr. Giraffe a nose-bonk hello.

He already said 'hi' to Baab the sheep, so now all he can do is sit there awkwardly and try not to make eye contact with Baab, which would make things even more awkward. It's kind of like when humans keep running into the same person they just said 'hi' to repeatedly at the grocery store while they do the rest of their shopping...like seeing them in every aisle kind of awkward.

I keep trying to type out this anecdote but every time I do I start to cry and my boyfriend gets alarmed. but he's doing something loud out in the garage so let's try this again

we all just did a family weekend with me, my boyfriend, my parents, and my sister and brother in law and the baby all staying together in one house. and at one point the baby and I were playing and he bonked face first into the edge of a furniture and gave himself his first official bloody nose. it was totally minor and I handled it perfectly ("oh wow, you have a bloody nose! have you ever had a bloody nose before? no? well it's nothing to worry about, it happens a lot, but I know it really hurts a lot right now, doesn't it? it'll stop soon, don't worry" etc. etc.) and he stopped crying pretty quick and it didn't even leave a mark.

but a few minutes later when my mom heard about it she kind of freaked out and started interrogating the situation like "what happened??? where??? how did he hit it???" with that Edge in her voice I have been noticing is a big old trigger for me, and I got a little upset. but I didn't want anyone to notice I was upset because like. I spent my whole childhood subject to my mom's emotional vagaries and trying to fix everything for her and for my sister and my dad, and I don't think a little kid should have to do that, so now I always want to handle the situation in such a way as not to make it worse for the baby. and I knew if I got visibly upset it would escalate the whole situation and I didn't want the baby to have to deal with that. so I sort of went off and hid to cry about it all. about the emotional recovery work I've been doing where seeing the bonkers way my mom sometimes responds to a little kid in her care makes me realize that I was a little kid in her care and I didn't have anyone to take care of me and protect me the way the baby has his mom and me and that's sad, but it's also wonderful and I'm amazing, but I shouldn't have had to be so amazing, etc.

and I tried to tidy my face up before I came out but the baby looked at me funny and I am sure he could tell I had been crying. and everyone was discussing going to play mini golf and I said "oh that sounds so fun! who all is going? should I go?"

and the baby said to me "yeah you should, because you can help me out. like if I am hungry and I need somebody to open a snack for me, you can do it."

and like... I truly believe he thought I had been crying because I was upset he got hurt on my watch, and he wanted to demonstrate renewed faith and trust in my caretaking abilities, so I wouldn't feel so sad. that is what I think happened. is he not just the most emotionally brilliant and kind person in the universe already. at the age of four and a half!!!

Doing some more thinking about my TMA x Batman crossover, and I don't think I want all of (or even most of) the Batman cast to be Avatars. Probably 2-4 of them could be Avatars while everyone else has been a victim or never came across the fears in any meaningful way. Plus this is post TMA finale and so the fears will not have had a lot of time to sink themselves into the universe (~100 years tops).

Currently I only have Jason pinned down (Avatar of the Buried (reasons if you're interested)) but here are some ideas I have for everyone else.

Bruce: victim of Corruption

Cass: victim of Slaughter

Damian: Avatar of the Flesh (mainly here because if this was pre-finale Damian and Monster Pig would get along swimmingly)

Mr. Reachy Pattern

Please ignore how poor my execution is, I promise the pattern is better than it looks here

Notes:

First of all, did you know that giraffes’ horn thingies are called ossicones? The more you know..

Any unmarked sides on a piece of the pattern either attach to its mirrored piece or wrap around to attach to itself. Hopefully it’s self explanatory which of these is the case. The guide for spots is not really exact and they don’t always line up or look good (especially if you sew like me and approximate everything). If you have access to an actual spotted fabric, I’d use that, provided you also have a solid version of the colour for the nose. For the best results you should use fabrics that don’t fray and don’t stretch too much. The mane/hair bits aren’t included in the pattern. While I used two layers of fringe, I’d recommend using yarn cuz it’ll sit more nicely and look more like the actual hair. If you sew the seams exactly according to the pattern (maybe minus the ossicones and tail), it would hypothetically look really good I swear!!

Mr. Reachy is not really drawn consistently throughout the show, so I kind of tried to average out all of its appearances. I put the mouth on the right side of the face, but it doesn’t really have a consistent position. Mine’s mouth also doesn’t extend onto the front of the face for simplicity’s sake.

(Observe the inconsistencies and validate my interpretation!!!)

last week my parents and I went over to my sister's house for lunch and hung out for awhile afterwards and finally the baby was like "I am ready for everybody to go home now" and my mom got a little bit shirty about it. not a lot in front of the baby (endless bitching afterwards to me and my dad 🫠) but enough that my sister definitely would have noticed my mom being Displeased and probably the baby would too because he is incredibly observant and intelligent.

BUT today the baby was playing in the sandbox and my sister was singing quietly to herself over a craft project and I said "is that a mama nous song you're singing?" and she said yeah and I said "she's so great, thanks for introducing me to her" and she said "yeah I love her. I actually made up a song kind of in her style for [baby] after last week, you know when he asked y'all to leave?" and she sang it to me. I wish I could remember the lyrics exactly but it was something like

"it's okay to have boundaries, it's okay to say no / it's okay to tell people when you'd like for them to go! / they might be sad about it, they might wish they could stay / but it's not your job to fix that and your feelings are okay!"

and I honest to god almost cried right there. she's so amazing and I can't believe how lucky I am to have her for my incredible sister and for the mother of my incredible nephew

I saw your trek post about your dad and I can wholeheartedly say that he is in fact wrong. But not entirely. When Roddenberry wrote star trek, he explicity wrote Kirk to be the physical embodiment of heart, Spock as mind, and McCoy to be the balance between the two. His idea for the trio was that they had to function as a team: Spock and Kirk would balance one another out, and McCoy would be there to settle things when they were both being idiots. Additionally, Roddenberry canonicaly stated in Star Trek: The Motion Picture's novelization that Kirk is Spock's t'hy'la- a Vulcan term meaning people who are mentally completely bonded, often lovers, occasionally best friends, and essentially soulmates. Add onto that the entirety of s3 episode 9 of TOS (Tholian Web) beimg entirely about how Spock and McCoy can't function without Kirk to keep them from bickering, but the need to get him back and their love for him help them work together, and how in S1 episode 28, we literally see Kirk and Spock travel back in time, completely uncertain, with no resources or idea of what they're doing, to get McCoy. That's gay. (Also in this episode a vharacter quite literally tells Spock and Kirk that they belong at each others sides, as they always have been and always will be) Spock and Kirk (like I said earlier) balance each other out and get along well enough, but Kirk feels far too deeply to leave a friend behind, and Spock is there to rationally help him achieve that. Kirk's emotions overpower his logic, Spock's need for logic overpowers his emotions, McCoy's balance of both makes him capable of talking either of them down from various self destructive actions. To further my thesis, the first episode of season one, Spock's Brain, follows Kirk and McCoy trhing to retrieve spock from a life-threatening predicament. Plot wise a train wreck of an episode. But it does display Kirk and McCoy's cooperative skills, and their ability to successfully work towards a goal (once again, Kirk is overcome by the emotional aspect of things, and McCoy is there to keep him out of harm's way and make sure things run smoothly. There are plenty more episodes like this, but overall the idea that is both shown and intended by Geme Roddenberry is that the Triumvirate are a team, one who can work apart but works best together, and one which can't be separated. In short: McSpirk. Spirk is correct (t'hy'la) and so is McKirk (besties), but Spones is just as important to mention (rivalry is so fuckin gay). They are a set do not separate
