i never know how to phrase it but something about the way beatles biographers and people in general view paul's reflexive placating persona and determination to smooth things over as manipulative or duplicitous and john's reflexive barbed persona and habit of lashing out as brave and subversive despite both being equally defensive mechanisms to shield themselves from the world that resulted in them saying things that weren't true says more about how we culturally view kindness or friendliness as inherently untrustworthy or flimsy and anger and carelessness as more believable as someone's true nature than it says about either of them in actuality

Something I really like about timebomb is that Ekko actually knows what he's getting into.

I'm not really seeing it get talked about but in season 1 they mention that Ekko and the firelights help people addicted to shimmer get off it and lead more fulfilling lives within the community. I should probably rewatch the scene for the exact wording (might be misremembering tbh) but that comment implies A LOT.

First: Ekko's mission is helping people where he can, he would probably try and help Jinx even if he wasn't in love with her

Second: He has experience dealing with severe mental illness as that often goes hand in hand with drug abuse, namely depression/suicidal ideation like what Jinx was exhibiting

Third: He's probably mapped out best course of action FOR dealing with this and has already figured out his own limits/boundaries. Meaning he knew what he was getting into trying to talk Jinx out of suicide, and was thus more equipped to deal with the aftermath

Fourth: He's probably helped ex members of Silco's gang. The firelights seem to have a theme of healing and repairing and recovering, so they've probably also learned to forgive. If they're mission is to rebuild the lanes into a safe space, they can't exclude people they don't like, they have to make room for them. I think they fought Silco out of necessity, and I doubt Jinx would be the first person they help who's killed one of them.

These all might be a bit of a stretch but I think it really fits. Beyond that, it shows that Ekko can ACTUALLY help Jinx. As much as unconditional love can do, Ekko has the tools for Jinx's recovery and a path ready for her. He also probably knows that her "healthy" will look different from AU Powder's "healthy." On top of that, I expect he knows how to respect her even in the middle of psychotic breaks and won't agitate her already frail mental state

What gets me about the narrative possibility of Harriet being cursed when you encounter her at the door is imagine being Sophie in that situation:

Your mother is back, you lost each other but now she’s back. But something’s off, she doesn’t speak right, her gestures are off, it doesn’t feel like her; because it isn’t her, not anymore at least

She attacks, she wants her child, you can only be held back and cry in fear, horror and grief as you watch the people who have been looking after you be forced to mercilessly beat and kill your mother

You beg them to stop, and it’s not that they won’t, it’s that they can’t, they’re forced to. It’s to keep them all safe, it’s to keep you safe. You cry for them to stop, don’t hurt her mom, she wants to see her mom. She isn’t moving anymore.

Because they are on my mind, please accept one of my favorite Wangxian moments of all time.

Chapter 87

In my opinion, this is one of the most important Wangxian scenes in the whole novel. It is very special to me. It made me tear up when I was doing my read through.

Time and time again, Wei Wuxian has fallen, he's gotten hurt, people have failed him. The people who were supposed to be there for him have either left, he's lost them tragically, or they've betrayed him at some point in his life. His life has been one of loneliness and loss.

He has never had someone who he could rely on so heavily. He has never had a solid safety net before, someone on equal footing to him that he could fall back on and rely on. If anything he has spent his entire life being a safety net for other people. He has spent his whole life being strong for others.

Now, however, Lan Wangji is that safety net for him.

For the first time in his life, he has someone to truly catch him when he falls. He can let himself fall and still be safe. That "thank you" isn't just about Lan Wangji catching him after he fell from the tree, its about everything.

yk i realized i havent thought much about jay and ava’s relationship with each other when ava was alive. surprisingly

but like. jay always looking up to her big sister as the ideal role model, someone she has to immolate, someone she should be. ava looking at her little sister trying to follow in her footsteps instead of being herself.

do you think her stomach sort of dropped every time jay flaunted a near perfect score on some navy test. do you think she tried to subtly push jay away, tried to tell her she could do what she wanted and didn’t necessarily need to follow after her. do you think she felt a little sick every time she saw jay straightening her hair.

somewhere inside, a piece of her soul chipped whenever jay showed signs of ava. signs of jayson’s idea of a perfect daughter. jay never picked up on any of it. she always felt that sort of sad twang in ava when they were alone and talking about their futures, but that big boasting pride was so overwhelming it drowned it out

jay saw her perfect big sister with their father’s love and wanted to be just like her, ava saw her unsure little sister getting in over her head and wanted her to be herself. its late but. thinking about the ferin sisters
