It will never not annoy me that “garlic” by itself is seen as a ward for vampires.
Because it’s not. At least, not in the source people think it seems to originate from. Because Bram Stoker’s Dracula never said it was garlic itself that was repelling, rather, that it was garlic *flowers* that were repelling.
And while an argument can be made for garlic being repulsive, its roots aren’t from “Dracula”. Rather, it originates from Garlic’s antimicrobial properties, similar to that of silver (both of which are notably repulsive to vampires).
The antimicrobial properties of these two materials are why they were seen as “purifying” in the face of evil. Seeing as people used to connect the spread of disease with an inherent “Evilness” the air possessed. And silver being used in the production of mirrors when these mythologies were truly forming in the western world may be an explanation as to why vampires don’t seem to reflect in mirrors. As for stakes (or wood in general) there are those who argue for the reason behind that being because the wood used was used to make crosses. (+ the connection of religion is the opposite of evil and that’s why holy water and the sun works)
In conclusion the stuff we use to avoid vampires is quite literally just- old medical advice and religious beliefs protecting against evil.
(Yes I got reminded of this because I’m studying Wolf Alice (short story not the band) in my English literature class)
#kneecap’s beep-baps#vampires#vampire mythology#I suppose#just- I’m so done with people saying ‘oh yeah vampires are repulsed by garlic’#like yeah it smells really strong and it’s hard to get rid of#and became part of the mythos over time due to its antimicrobial properties#BUT THATS NOT WHAT WAS IN THE ‘OG’ SOURCE MATERIAL#AND ALSO#are we ever going to talk about how Dracula wasn’t even the first vampire novel ever written ???#like in terms of what we consider western ‘vampires’ today#(I’m aware that mythos of vampire-like creatures is very widespread globally and I’m not trying to dismiss that)#there were like 3 predecessors that I’ve never seen anyone talk about#and I’m so upset over that#anyways I’m yapping instead of studying#someone save me

i don’t mind narratives where the audience knows more than the characters in the story. but why would you pose an interesting mystery, a mysterious figure or system working on the outside of everything…. and then cut to those people immediately and have them monologue about their significance to the story -_-
#i honestly wasn’t even listening to what they said#stop yapping and just show me!! the sequence would have been perfectly interesting without dialogue just give me a little taste#like obviously this is based on sherlock mythos but did they have to go ‘And I’m moriarty! :)’ and wink at the camera?

Anon you’re a genius ngl. You should like, be given 50 billion medals.
Also just add Turtle and you’ve got the full set for romance options
RIP Moon you would’ve killed it as a romance game protagonist
Moon Rising was a romance novel. There are so many options:
Mightyclaws - The quiet yet vengeful artist
Qibli - The charming outclaw
Carnelian - The brooding ex-soldier
Winter - The misunderstood prince
Sora - The quiet, vengeful, loyal one
Icicle - The abrasive, fierce, loyal princess
Kinkajou - The happy-go-lucky best friend
#honestly Moon does legit have the perfect power for a romance game-#and has that infamous social anxiety rizz#I wanna make a one off of this-#I say knowing fully well I probably won’t get to doing that-#this was my ask btw-#now I’m just yapping on-#mythos yaps(me)#I forget to use that sometimes-

이희승 — ❪ LEE HEESEUNG ❫
౨ৎ Leander & Hero; a tale that could prove to be the inspiration behind Romeo and Juliet, this sees a man falling at first sight for a priestess of none other than Aphrodite.
due to your oath to the goddess of love, however, you can’t help but refuse the sweet confession of his. despite knowing very well, that deep down, you fully reciprocate his feelings.
only for heeseung to relentlessly attempt to win your affections, telling you there is no better way to serve the goddess of love than by devoting yourself to a life full of it. at the end, when you do agree to meet him again, he swims across a literal ocean ── and is even temporarily halted by the god of the seas himself ── to finally put an end to both your yearnings and allow a rendezvous <3
⋅ ˚ ଳ ₊ ‧ others utc
박종성 — ❪ JAY PARK ❫
౨ৎ Odysseus & Penelope; jay being a warrior who suffers through years of war and voyages of tumultuous seas bravely, owing only to the memories of his wife is so in character to me.
thoughts of you would be such an unshakable source of drive for him, motivating him to get back to you so greatly that he'd even reject immortality as offered by the titan daughter Calypso.
and you, the wife, meanwhile, would refuse to take on any of the numerous suitors who attempt to woo you, regardless of their status and the benefits they could provide to your currently doomed kingdom. when finally he returns to his own land, he'd waste no time in absolutely demolishing all the pest-like suitors and restoring your kingdom back to its former glory. loyalty win!
심재윤 — ❪ JAKE SIM ❫
౨ৎ Dionysus & Ariadne; some asshole who shows up to try to assert a victory on the half man-half beast Minotaur cruelly kept by your father, the king, looks ever so pitiful that you decide to help out him and his men.
he then promptly promises to take you as his queen but soon after abandons you on an island all alone.
said island is visited by Jake, deity of insanity and wine. being horrified by how you were treated, he decides to take you under his own shelter. you soon fall in love with each other but the earlier talked about asshole ends up murdering you! petty ahh but jake being, well, a god is quite easily able to bring you back, granting you immortality along the way.
and then you both laugh as the asshole is thrown off a cliff by his own people. happy ending <3
박성훈 — ❪ PARK SUNGHOON ❫
౨ৎ Eros & Psyche; Aphrodite's issue with you in this tale is that you are considered so beautiful that people revere you, instead of worshipping the goddess. a little later, when you're unable to find a suitable partner, it is decided that to appease the goddess you must be wedded off to a "horrible serpent."
sunghoon, Aphrodite's son commands his winds to rescue you, having seen over you for a while now. he visits you in the dark so as not to alarm you of his identity but when your family learns of your luck, they maliciously sow seeds of mistrust in you towards him. t
his leads to you going against his warning of not looking at him in the light. and true to his word, when you do catch a glimpse of him, he disappears without a trace.
desperate to reconnect and apologize, you turn to Aphrodite herself, who, even more angered due to your sojourn with her son, punishes you with an array of Herculean tasks. only when you are finally able to finish them all, learning resilience, humility and sacrifice along the way are you able to reunite with sunghoon your damsel in distress fr. your dedication is also awarded with ambrosia, making you immortal <3
김선우 — ❪ KIM SUNWOO ❫
౨ৎ Pygmalion & Galatea; you, being a well established sculptor, known all over for your talent were quite obviously a much sought out potential bride. because, patriarchal society.
though your experience with men as well as all that which you'd heard from others had completely put you off from them. you instead choose to devote yourself to sculpting.
one sculpture, affectionately referred to by you as sunoo, in particular was modeled as a beautiful man, one who had all your ideal traits for a partner. Aphrodite, finding this rather romantic, decides to grant the sculpture sentience. but having now become a human male, it's only obvious you'd discover his flaws.
this would perhaps cause some barriers in the relationship you'd imagined with rose tinted glasses, but with both of you willing to work on yourselves to be better for the other, it would be much more real and meaningful. no miscommunication on my watch, thanks.
양정원 — ❪ YANG JUNGWON ❫
౨ৎ Perseus & Andromeda; possibly the only pairing with a confirmed non-tragic end. this is yet another tale wherein Aphrodite is the meddling goddess.
beginning with a queen bragging about her daughter (you) being prettier than all the nymphs of the sea. this statement ends up angering Poseidon enough for him to unleash a sea monster to wreck havoc upon your kingdom's land as well as its people. after which, said people of the kingdom decide the only possible way to appease the monster is to sacrifice you, the said daughter (who had absolutely nothing to do with any of this).
a great warrior, jungwon, while passing by happens to come across the sacrificial ceremony near the coast, and taking pity on you decides to kill the monster. because he's just iconic like that. and then you marry each other and live happily ever after <3
西村 力 — ❪ NISHIMURA RIKI ❫
౨ৎ Orpheus & Eurydice; an extremely talented musician, niki, while on a quest, comes across you and the two of you immediately fall in love. however, the bliss of the subsequent marriage is lost swiftly, when while being pursued by a past suitor, a snake happens to bite you.
refusing to accept this tragic outcome, niki decides the only course of action is to traverse the underworld and bring you back himself. he successfully persuades Hades and Persephone to do so, however a condition is placed upon him. he must not look behind even once while leading you outwards.
and sure, he's able to make the journey back but right as he nears the line dividing the light and the dark he realizes the edge is steep.
fearing that you might trip, niki glances back and is greeted by the sight of you for merely a second, before you fade away. this time to a place from where even his god-like musical aptitude could bring you back from, no matter how he yearned.

on my knees for a fun rp that actually makes it past the plotting stage PLEASE
craving some dark/high fantasy that's equal parts spice and violence and angst and everything nice. maybe something inspired by the mortal instruments or poj or greek/indian/japanese mythos. give me cruelly righteous angels, tricky faes, forgotten gods, witty, dangerous demons— a world where we can build our own magic systems and come up with rich lore, weave in drama and emotion into over-reaching plot ideas
bouncing off of each other's ideas, throw in aus, headcanons, and lots and lots of yap. just wanna gush over ocs and really, just looking to write something that has us both kicking our feet and giggling and getting all invested in our little critters <3 anyways if this is you pls hit me up!
feel free to bring your plot ideas and ocs!!
(ps. if you are interested, give my pinned post a read for general guidelines and more info before reaching out ^^)
(pps. if you'd like to plot pls drop a dm)

My first was Open Arms, which I heard after @buttered-water referenced the song in the drawing they did for my oc Lotuseater, at which point I then learned after @sombrathedragon Reblogged it that it was a reference to Epic, at which point I got curious of what it even was and then listened to Open Arms(the referenced song), and after that I forgot which I listened to next but I believe it might have been Warrior of the Mind, Ruthlessness, or Monster? Not fully sure lol
Out of curiosity, what song was the first epic song y’all ever heard?
#mythos yaps(me)#gonna keep trying to use that tag now-#especially in this case because bruh I over complicated it lol

Hi nat! I'm really curious about something. Do you write your fics with an already planned end or do you just keep writing and and figure it out how to end along as you write? I'm really curious because i don't know If i could start write something with a unplanned end because i would probably have a lot lacks of creativity to develop an end for a series.
Hi Anon!
It really depends! 'Writing as I go' was my fear for a very long time, so at the beginning I had a very strict outline. For What Was That? I knew what's going to happen since chapter one. For Game the outline cleared somewhere around chapter four. And that's about it :v I think I've missed out on a couple of opportunities by being so strict with myself.
For Nothing's New I had a rough outline, but there isn't really much plot happening in it. So it was divided into major scenes between Viktor and Reader and additional off-load scenes, like the chat Reader had with Mel.
Then A Deer and a Man happened and my outline slapped me on the face :') Funnily enough, not much of it has changed during writing process, it just grew on the inside, so to speak. So, the main events remained as I planned them, some scenes in the middle were added, and the general atmosphere build up contributed to the word count. I also brainstormed on it heavily with @rennethen and the contract scene was their idea!
For In Thy Name I have a massive mind map with the entire plot planned chapter by chapter. Some things get added/erased, but the major plot points remain unchanged and they are divided into beats. It doesn't have a chapter count yet, since I don't trust myself with a word count in period fics, I seem to not be able to shut up with descriptions of their clothes and interiors. But, fun (I guess? Is it fun?) fact: both Reader and Viktor have 'character sheets' I made for them by Call of Cthulhu 2nd edition RPG rules. So, they have a list of skills represented in percentage. For example, Reader has 90% skill on various languages and Viktor has 90% on Spot Hidden (it's an investigative skill) and 30% on Mythos Knowledge, which makes him instantly 30% insane :v
To Be Known is the first work I'm writing as I go, which is why it's a bit chaotic. Like sometimes it has Reader's perspective, sometimes Viktor's, sometimes an entire chapter is one person's POV. I am currently on chapter ten, and it is only now I see the ending for it, but I can't say for sure how many chapters are left, I think it's going to be something around 14-15 chapters. Again, it doesn't really have much plot. What took me the most time was figuring out Reader's occupation and where everyone lives lol, like I'm the only person who cares about that probably :') But if someone who is British reads it, they will most likely grasp that locations reflect characters' personalities (I hope). The other thing I have for it is 'plot beats', like major moments for their relationship development. It's been a very freeing process for me since I'm a massive OCD freak :')
But honestly I think you shouldn't worry about starting something without an outline. Sometimes you have to start something to see the next part. I kind of suffer with that: as soon as I write down what 'currently' happens I begin to see the next thing and I want to run toward it, like I can't wait, so I end up writing scenes for the future that I build up to. For TBK I have the final scene already written in dialogue form :d
The things I do to ensure that I will finish something are I either start publishing after I'm at least 3 chapters in and feel confident about it or when I have the most important plot beats: the general premise (like why characters are doing what they are doing in the first place), what's the source of the conflict and how it peaks (the breaking point) and how it resolves.
Ok, sorry for such a long yap!
#asks#my writing#can you tell I have literally transferred my OCDs onto writing#I no longer clean manically#now I write manically#it's better I guess :v

happy valentines dayy
have a heart ref!!! fitting for today lol
yap time! CW i lightly mention stuff about hearts beating, veins pulsating, scars, etc etc
im not really good at yapping not gonna lie 😭 but ill try to get my main points across
heart's design is hugely based off of greek mythology, especially icarus and cupid (bc hearts duhh). i wanted to incorporate the wings into his design in a way where it didnt clutter the silhouette, so i landed on icarus after a few trials lol
also i listened to hamilton recently so "you married an icarus, he has flown too close to the sun" stuck with me when drawing him
following the greek mythos inspo, i thought it would be cool for him to be a literal statue. the visual of him slowly cracking apart while he lashes out is pretty interesting
while i didnt fully explore the statue idea, i found a good middle ground where heart covered his face with clay to hide the scars from when soul lashed out at him for shooting mind. he's insecure about his veiny parts, so he only takes off the blindfold/clay when he's comfortable.
the stiff clay makes heart very facially unexpressive, so he tries to be more expressive through gestures, etc. its also really itchy so he scratches at his face often.
the veiny parts, representing the actual heart veins, are also extremely sensitive. it hurts to move, especially when heart makes expressions
side note: the scars get worse with every loop. this is a later loop
an overall theme of my hms designs is "mask"
ive been reading about the topic of masking, or faking a persona to the public. i wanted to explore that topic within my fan designs/lore, along with embracing your true identity/feelings.
heart wears a clay mask, which is very restricting and itchy. often he comes off as unexpressive because of it (he can shape other faces if hes feeling festive). i imagine his movements would be small and reserved.
when his emotions become more intense, heart becomes more expressive. he thrashes about and the clay mask starts to shatter apart... (think to the cracked doll makeup, @/alyciamarie on tiktok)
...until eventually all of the clay cracks and falls apart to reveal his actual face. it pulsates, beats, and writhes like an actual heart would. his true self is dramatic, loud, and outspoken, but he tires out and quits easily.
thats all i have for heart at the moment!! please let me know if you have any criticisms, comments, or questions because id love to chat a bit about my designs lol
thanks for reading!!! 💜

What’s your favorite Guinevere ? Whether in a movie/show or painting?
Hi anon!! Hope ur okie! Thank u for the ask 🥰🥰🥰 long answer because I can't shut the fuck up about Guinevere's ahhhh!!!
My fave Guin's are:

Jean Wallace in Sword of Lancelot (1963). She was married to the movie's director and writer, Cornel Wilde, who also starred as Lancelot. Also, they were also MARRIED AT THE TIME. She's incredible in the role ngl because her Guin is simultaneously cruel, bloodthirsty, lonely, sympathetic, loving, and funny and she's *screams* I think about her every damn day. Also, the costumes are STUNNING. Honestly, one of the best Guin's ever (and I love near enough any and all portrayals (apart from u fuck Mists of Avalon. I'm fuckin kicking you into a tar pit and setting you on fire. Also, Once and Future King's Guin. And also Gwen in BBC's Merlin. Angel Coulby is a brill actor and they give her NOTHING.)
In terms of tv shows? Tamsin Egerton in Camelot (2011)

I love herrr!!!!! The show deserved a second series honestly because the way it reinvented so much of the mythos was really fun and Guinevere is an amazing character! I won't spoil if you haven't seen it but her and Arthur's relationship is super *screams* She's strong-willed, ambitious, but also offers Arthur a lot of support as he assumes his kingship. Plus, she's genuinely just a well-rounded character and I go *brrr* every time I think about her.
For art: Margaret Jones' illustration of Guin is !!!!!!!

(She's the red-headed lady in the blue dress sitting on Arthur's left. Sadly, this is about the best quality pic of the cover I could find.) Can u believe Margaret Jones only started illustrating when she was SIXTY?! I adore her work on The Thomases edition of The Mabinogion and I LOVE her art in this book too!!! Guinevere, beloved. (I do actually think of Guin as being a ginger.)
Also: John Collier's Queen Guinevere's Maying is probs thee quintessential depiction of her, but I swear to fuck, anon, I have a book on celtic myths I've had since I was nine or so, and this is in it in black and white. The hold it had on me is impossible to put into words.

Like baby girl is REGAL AS FUCK HOLDING THOSE BRANCHES. IMPOSING AS SHIT IN THAT GOWN. idk if its intentional but the vibe show gives off is very Rhiannon-ish to me. Maybe this is what partly influenced me to make Gwyn in my novel Rhiannon and Manawydan's foster daughter? Idk but I just love this painting sm!!!!!
(Also, in terms of books: GWYNHWYFAR IN GILLIAN BRADSHAW'S IN WINTER'S SHADOW UR MY BELOVED!!! Her pov is FASCINATING. While I dislike the fact Bradshaw chose to use Bedwyr in Lancelot' place for the affair - which doesn't really happen in Welsh Arthuriana so Gillian. Gillian, bls - I LOVE GWYN. Another ginger Guin, she's fuckin !!!!!! She tries to poison MEDRAWD AT A BANQUET!!!! SHE MARTIALS FORCES FOR ARTHUR! SHE MAKES ME GO INSANE.)

Also, okay this isn't a Guin piece of art but for me it evokes her and Arthur and it rattles around my head like a bullet on a daily basis:

it's Joseph C. Leyendecker's illustration from a scene in Rodolfo. Peak Arthur and Guin to meeeeeeee.
Also, okay, one last thing: the poem Gwenhwyfar by Llew Llwyfo is INSANE, and also Aimee-Ffion Edwards portrayal of her in Albion - an audio drama - needs to be STUDIED. Plus, honourable mention in the book category goes to Cynan Jones' Blood, Bird, Snow where she legit appears to tell Cai off and I spent the entire time I was reading the passage internally chanting 'WIFE WIFE WIFE.'
okay, that's enough yapping. Sorry for the long answer, anon!!! 😭😭😭 I genuinely love Guin though. I'm so serious.
#arthuriana#queen guinevere#gwenhwyfar ferch ogrfan fawr#arthurian mythology#arthurian legend#arthurian art#margaret jones#the mabinogion#welsh myth#mabinogion#arthur pendragon#arthurian#okay I should've restrained myself but wife. Just wife. Thank u anon for this

hello! i noticed you often refer to odysseus as “prince” instead of “king” in your fics and i was just wondering why.
Hi!
Thank you for this ask I forgot about😅 I was trying not to do that and actually answer 😅 sorry. But I like asks I swear, even if I'm bad at them!!! 😭🥰😘
Originally I just didn't think about it; and called him prince in Odysseus' Iliad: Romance and Pain, because
- I had recently read Circe by MM where he's called prince (forgot to question it, that's on me)
- I wanted to make him sound young.
And! Prince is one of the most charming titles for me - I grew up with the game Prince of Persia 🧡
Then.
Reading the Iliad I seem to remember they are always called kings (anax or basileos, the first (Agamemnon and Zeus) is the 'supreme' or 'high' king, that rules over the local kings called basileos). Like the Irish High King and the feudal lord having vassals, when there are a lot of riotous local powers a judge of sorts is needed.
I don't remember mentions of princes or even the existence of the position of crown prince; in fact with all the succession disaster in mythos I think they did not have it. When a king died and he had more then one son... Whelp! Civil war time! XD ⚔️🩸
Kidding. Mostly.
So I decided since Odysseus ruled a kingdom and he's called King in the Iliad, he's a king.
Should I go back and edit all mentions of his as prince, I wondered. Well, I could, but...! That's easy. I knew I could do better 😈
When I decided that The Nasty Iphigenia Business and Odysseus' Iliad Romance and Pain were in the same universe, I found a canonical reason why in the latter he is calling himself prince despite being a king - which I'll eventually post - and I've been calling Odysseus king ever since 👑✨ since he retroactively always had been one 😏
Aside, because like Nestor I'm hard to stop when I get yapping...
Hector/Ektor is ok being the crown prince, despite the somewhat medieval terminology, because the Hittites were my inspiration for Troy/Ilios; their king, the Labarna, has a crown prince/heir apparent title: the Tuhkanti.
Since Troy is on the outskirts of the Hittite empire I didn't want to use specific terms for what was likely an influential but ultimately foreign culture, so 'crown prince' makes do.
Again, thank you for enabling my yapping time :D 🥰
