Myths and Madness
The thumbnail I made for my new video on FOrtnite Chapter 5, Season 2: Myths and Mortals!
If you are at all interested in witnessing the madness in youtube form no less you can do so here!
Pretty happy with this one, though it might be a bit on the complex side what with the two figures and detailed wings, at least for a youtube thumbnail but ah well. It's based on this meme.

I think, perhaps one of the funniest things to come from EPIC popularising the Odyssey is that now a ton of people think Poseidon wanted to kill Odysseus.
In the Odyssey, Poseidon has no intention of killing Odysseus. In fact, part of the whole reason Zeus lets Poseidon do whatever he wants even though he thinks Odysseus is rad and should get to kiss his wife is explicitly because Poseidon had no intentions of killing Odysseus. Poseidon wanted to pay back the suffering/inconvenience blinding Polyphemus would have caused. It's a really abstract thing tbh. How do you pay back someone permanently disabling your son? Poseidon's solution was just to amputate Odysseus from his other half; i.e. Penelope. The end game was never murder, it was always an endurance race.

(Od. Book 1: Zeus reassuring Athena that he is not, in fact, a part of Odysseus Hater-Nation. Trans. Robert Fagles)
Also, for those wondering if there's any sort of in text reason for why Poseidon wasn't around in God Games - at the time in the Odyssey when Athena petitions Zeus to let Odysseus leave Calypso's island, Poseidon was -checks notes- on vacation in Ethiopia. Yep. He left to Ethiopia for a festival and thusly was very much absent for Athena's whole "please let Ody go? Please? 🥺" request.

(Od. Book 1: While Odysseus was suffering, Poseidon went to party in the east)
I am begging y'all to read the Odyssey. It's a comedy for everyone except Odysseus and Penelope who are, in fact, suffering 24/7 365.

Annabeth as Odysseus. Both too smart, too cunning, with eyes that have seen to much and dreams too big for this world.
She dreams, sometimes, of the raging sea, of bloodied fields and weary soldiers. Of the warm sun and sand of an island that feels like home. When she wakes up, the memories tug at her mind, tantalisingly out of her reach. (When storms hit the shores of the camp, she hears the roar of waves against the beach echoing in the cabin and she hides under her covers, trembling and gasping in a fear she doesn’t understand).
The first time she meets Clarisse, a new camper with wild eyes and an angry scowl she nearly calls her Achilles. (The only one to notice her hesitation is Mr D. He looks pitying for a second before retreating behind his disdainful apathy).
Percy as Penelope. Both fiercely loyal, resilient and strong. To have them as friends, as lovers, is like having a home.
Percy who flinches at smelly Gabe’s voice, who sees other men superimposed with him, stronger, taller, familiar men. He feels dread and determination rise within him. He lifts his chin. Royalty never bows to anyone. (People forget Penelope came from Sparta after all. She has smiles full of teeth and a sword in her closet).

Odysseus: demanding Athena take off whatever enchantment she put on him the second the situation ends.
Odysseus: who constantly reminds Athena that he has great plans to grow old and die with his wife so don't even think about getting any ideas.
Odysseus: side eye diomedes who has started fucking glowing he has so many enchantments on him: bro you should talk to Athena about getting those removed. You're going to end up immortal or some shit
Diomedes: who has been a solider since he was 5 who has intersting thoughts about his own personhood who has a much more traditional relationship with Athena and would rather literally stab his own eye out with a rusted sword than speak out of turn: I don't know what you're talking about
#odysseus#Diomedes#Athena#This is more pulling from my own headcanons than any source material#But I have a lot of feelings about the narritive physically changing a character and how well that works with the idea that#Becoming immortal is a slow process more of a slide than an abrupt change#And I have a lot of feelings about diomedes becoming immortal and how odysseus only ever wanted to be a man#And how diomedes was having a much more mortal experience and odysseus experiencing so much magic and monsters and gods#And how every step of the way diomedes only ever politely thanks Athena never argues only does his duty#And how nearly everything odysseus met tried to change him or keep him and how he fought against that with his whole being#Also a lot of feelings about the traditional reward for heros was immortality#This obviously does not include all the times Athena treated odysseus like a barbie doll because ody was 98% not aware of that#Athena post the whole ajax going insane thing: that was fun#Odysseus: great yah super fucking fun love when my allies go mad with desires to torture me to death BTW#Take off the invisibility spell I want nobody trace of it lingering on me I am remaining mortal if it kills me#Athena: definitely not pouting you're no fun one little spell isn't going to permanently alter you#Odysseus: I am not taking any chances any invisibility I have is going to be my own fucking skill and your excellent training not magic#Diomedes: internally:after getting the ability to see through illusions and see gods#Should I mention this to Pallas Athena? Did she mean for me to keep it? Is it bad if I keep using it?#Is it even more disrespectful to not use it? Surely she is aware that I still have this? Surely it would be an insult to her intelligence#To remind her that would be casting doubt on her memory and perhaps it is part of a plan and#Who am I to question pallas athenas plans who am I but her devout weapon better to not mention it or any of the other lingering magics#Diomedes realizing a hundred years after the fact that he is in fact immortal: ....should I mention this?#Athena finds it funny to try to sneak magic onto odysseus it's a game for them because their both rat bastards#But not post odyssey it's just triggering then#Actual child solider diomedes#Greek myths

Gamer Gods
(Ares and Athena are sitting on a sofa. Ares frowns at his controller.)
Ares: Ath, can we play a different game? You've beat me at Connect 4 for 100 times in a row.
Athena (taunting): I don't see why 101 times would make a difference then.
Ares (pouting): I don't like this game anymore.
Athena: What if we played Sudoku?
Ares: No! That's worse! Let's play Mortal Kombat or Soul Calibur.
Athena (cringing): I don't think that's a good idea.
Ares (grinning): Finally afraid you'll lose?
Athena (frowning): You know what, fine. Let's do this.
(Several hours later in immortal time, Zeus walks into the room.)
Zeus (excited): Ooh! A fighting game. I want in.
(Athena sends Ares a look.)
Athena: It's not that fun, Dad.
Zeus: Aw, I bet it's great! I can't believe Ares is actually doing pretty well. I'll play against him.
Ares (ghostly pale): Huh?
(The next game, he and Zeus are on the sofa. The screen shows that Zeus wins.)
Zeus (eyeing him): That's the 3rd time in a row. I feel like you're going easy on me.
Ares (nervously): What? No, of course not.
Zeus (warningly): Ares, I want to really play. You were beating Athena. Give me a challenge.
Ares: A-are you sure?
Zeus: Yes.
Athena (mouthing from behind Zeus): Don't do it.
Zeus (eyes narrowing): Ares, that's an order.
(The next game begins with Ares shaking. It ends with the screen telling Zeus that he lost.)
Zeus (lightning sparkling on him):...
(Ares and Athena make a dash for the door before Zeus can get up.)
Ares (still running): We'll play Sudoku next time.

personally I believe that Zeus was straight up lying to Odysseus in the horse and the infant. why would Astyanax hunt down Odysseus and his family in particular? Why not Neoptolmeus or Agamemnon or any of the other kings? Sure, Odysseus made the horse, but Neo’s dad killed his father and then he himself either killed or enslaved the rest of his family. Taking revenge on Odysseus specifically doesn’t make as much sense (unless he went on a revenge spree).
I think Zeus just wanted to see if Odysseus would obey. Whether because a god commanded it or because he feared for his family, at the end of the day he killed a child because he MIGHT take revenge. He did what Zeus said. It’s Zeus’s way of toying with him.
it’s also why I like the parallel in Thunder Bringer. Zeus knows he will choose himself over innocents because he has already done so.
