Newt gets a pet bearded dragon and he's super excited about this because they're so COOL Hermann! And Hermann is just all grumpy about it and like 'whatever you childish man i do not care for it' BUT THEN one day Newt comes home early and finds Hermann scratching the dragon's belly and being all soft, whispering things like 'who's adorable? YOU'RE adorable' and 'look at your little feet and your little tail and your little beard, oh yes you are gorgeous, you are!' in a stupid voice. So naturally Newt completely rubbs it in his face and calls him a big softie, but also his eyes are watering because of how much he loves Hermann.

Hey!! I’ve been thinking about Newmann (are you even surprised haha) and wondering if you have any cute headcanons you’d like to share? 🥺💕 (no pressure though, hope your doing great! <3)

First thing I thought about Newt creating a playlist specifically for Hermann. That's probably happened before the first movie. We all know that music is a huge thing for Newt and he likes listening to it both with headphones and without them. So maybe one day he decides to create a playlist which wouldn't disturb Hermann and would be pleasing to him. He definitely doesn't ask about it directly and probably looks through their correspondence, tries to remember which songs from his own playlists Hermann liked. He also dares to add something which he thinks will be suitable.

Later, when the playlist is finished, he turns it on, waiting for the other man's reaction. Hermann at first doesn't react at all, but later notices that the sounds aren't irritating and are surprisingly nice. That's not the music Newt prefers and he knows it well (because they know each other). But he doesn't have an answer why the music is different this time.

Later that day Newt asks if Hermann liked the music and after getting the confirmation he grins and explains what he did. Hermann is startled for several seconds but thanks him with noticeable blush.

The other thing I thought about is movies. (Sorry I have no idea how watching ANYTHING works in other countries and I'm very lazy to Google so sorry for mistakes)

Newt is definitely following the appearance of new blockbusters and mentioning things he wants to watch. If he is late and the film isn't shown anymore, he does get a little bit disappointed.

Hermann is listening to him all the time and writing all the names down later. When a certain movie comes out, he occasionally finds a reason to go out to the city (he suddenly ran out of chalk, he needs new piece of clothing because Newt ruined the previous one and many other excuses) and while they are out, either Newt starts offering to go to the cinema or Hermann asks whether there's something Newt wants to watch.

If the movie is no longer shown, he buys the cd(?)/downloads(?) it and firmly offers Newt to watch something "someone recommend him"

(At these points I start to think if these things are cute???)

Bonus: I can't stop thinking about Hermann being a secret sweet tooth. When Newt finds this out he starts presenting him different (and quite expensive) sweets. Like Swiss chocolate or something. And every time Hermann can't stop the smile

Newton finds a broken down one and decides to fix it so to have it clean up after him (what with Hermann constantly complaining about how filthy the lab is). Except... Mechanical engineering isn't reeeeally his specialty but hey, how hard can it be to reprogram such a small little bugger?

Oh boy.

In less than 5 minutes since being turned on again, it absolutely destroys everything in its current (really low) reach: it shatters 3 of Hermann's smaller blackboards, shreds a stack of Newt's old notes, pulverizes a box of high quality chalk, squishes multiple small Kaiju samples, and in the process knocks over half of the furniture (including Hermann's ladder, which almost hits Newt in the head). It only stops its carnage once some of the fluid from the Kaiju samples seeps into its mechanisms and short-circuits it.

Hermann (who wasn't present, Newt wanted it to be a surprise) is not pleased when he comes back, and takes his time during the rest of the day to make that abundantly clear to Newt while the latter cleans up. It's a pretty shit day and Newt goes to bed with a migraine.

Newt decides to shelve the idea for the time being, or at least until Hermann forgets about the whole mess (which is unlikely to ever happen). He completely gives up when the robot disappears, likely sequestred by the cleaners on the mathematicians request.

Two months later he enters the lab from his break to find it, if not spotless, certainly much cleaner than it was before. There's a scuttling sound, and he looks bemusedly to the ground as the small robot shuffles across the floor and starts drying the water that's dripping from his wet jacket.

Hermann is pointedly not looking away from his screen, and Newt doesn't say anything, but for a few weeks the radio music isn't blasted as loudly as usual.

So I was looking at Pacific Rim props on PropstoreAuction yesterday when I found pages for a "Shatterdome maintenance robot." Behold:

Look at him. He's like. A leetol bug. Six legs and little mandible graspers. I think if I met this robot I would give it a kiss on its little forehead.

Honestly I like the idea of Newt telling silly jokes and Hermann only being able to suppress his laughter for about thirty seconds or so before he starts laughing wildly because he’s just so in love with his little fella.

as an autist myself, I have to announce that newmann are gay AND neurodivergent!! newt is autistic and that makes him loud and abrasive and he can't handle systems or structure because they make him feel suffocated!!!! he struggles with personal hygiene!! he loves his special interests even tho they're weird or scary to everyone else!!! Hermann is autistic and that makes him express affection differently!!! he's touch repulsed under most circumstances but when he does want to be touched he doesn't know how to express it because he has difficulty with social stuff!!!! he loves his special interests even tho they're weird and boring to everyone else!!!! they understand eachother even though their autism expresses very differently!! they are gay and autistic and disasters and in love with eachother!!!!!

Hermann surprised everyone in college when he turned out to be the kind of guy to stay up until 5AM even when he had an 8AM test the next day, despite every other part of him appearing to indicate the sleeping habits of a 60 year old.

He maintains a strict and relatively healthy sleep schedule when he first starts at the Shatterdome, and Newt teases him about it and doesn't believe him when he says that he used to have worse sleeping habits than Newt does. Then they hit the end-of-the-word grind and suddenly Hermann is functioning better than Newt because By jove Newton I wasn't joking when I said I used to regularly stay up for days at a time

i know i already posted about this once (but u should expect more tbh) buuut i was just thinking abt how newt n hermann are both autistic. like i just luv that for them!

for real tho i think thats part of why theyre so (surprisingly, to some - especially people who dont know them well) compatible. (also drift compatible!!!! how could i FORGET?) like little things they do or say that might seem off or strange to others just makes sense to them.

like when hermann stays up all working on a particularly important but tricky equation for hours on end without rest, newt gets it. so he doesnt try to stop hermann when hes on a roll, just makes him coffee and keeps as quiet as he can when he finds hermann sound asleep on the couch the next morning. also, newt often acts as a buffer for hermann between him and others since newt is more naturally extroverted and comfortable around people.

or when newt cant keep himself from rambling on about kaiju, other people at best are rolling their eyes at the weird guy obsessed with monsters. but hermann knows its newts biggest special interest, so later when theyre alone, just the two of them, hermann makes a point to ask newt something about them. maybe its even something hermann already knows about, but its worth it to see newts face light up because someones actually taking an interest and genuinely listening to him.
