This references a famous poem by Hermann Hesse. The metaphor of smash the world's shell references Hermetic alchemy. In alchemy, the process of initiation begins with Nigredo (blackening). This means heating an ore or something else so long til the bad things burn down, turn to coal, become black and fall off. Nigredo is also linked to a symbolic death.

In some occult societies like freemasonry and the American skull and bones fraternity, this is represented by a coffin. And sometimes, people who want to join the group are told to sleep in a coffin in a ritual way.

In the beginning of the series, utena was found and freed from a coffin and there were 3 coffins. In certain traditions like freemasonry, the number 3 is a very symbolic number. Usually meaning mother, father and child. Like in Utena.

By the way, the rose of rosicrucianism can also mean a form of mental crucifixion and death by the soul being chained to the material world. Breaking these chains is a resurrection. In freemasonry, the soul is spiritually dead due to 3 spiritual wounds (wounded heart, wounded mind, wounded voice)
