sometimes u can spite write (not my first choice but it works) by looking at published works that are so bad and just. maybe even rewrite it better as a small exercise

i get what you're saying and i might try this, but i worry that it's like. too akin to fanfiction and i've spent the majority of my teenage years writing fanfiction and it's something i sort of want to avoid going back to until i have a handle on creating something of my own. i'm too used to not developing my own world and characters atp like i have serious brainrot that i need to cure

mmkay, I think this might be the thing that's bothering me, wrt "this is Voldemort you should of expected this etc etc". In this story, the clock was rewound to tom being literally in utero, so his entire canon life experience diverges. For me (usually), part of what I enjoy about a romance with a "evil" character is to see how they can be changed for the better, because I have a personal belief that humans are not inherently good/bad and that nurture can play a part in how a person shakes out. So I (foolishly?) was hoping the story would go more this route. So the overall arc or the story feels (to me) very rooted in a kind of "original sin" narrative that I have a visceral aversion to. idk, I don't mean to say that I think v would be made totally pure and good by the power of love uwu but the vibe (to me) feels kind of nihlistic and "never give people a chance" so sorry if I came off overly negative here. I guess this story isn't really for me and I'll try to temper my expectations or just not engage in the future. ive been reading for a while now tho so I guess we'll see if I fall prey to the sunk cost fallacy. Oh also im really hair trigger over a narrative where a woman's agency is taken from her because of the state of politics here in the good ol us of aaaaaah

girl. It was rewound to in-utero for about five minutes. Then he was 23. Already split his soul twice, murdered Myrtle (which I wrote as more accidental but canonically was not), as well as his father and his grandparents. He was working at B&B with the intention of finding more objects to turn into horcruxes, meaning he was in full premeditative murder mode. So yes, I’m going to say perhaps your expectations were not where they should have been - or that tom in my story fooled you as much as he did hermione that he wasn’t actually hell bent on attaining power by any means possible. Which is fine - I wrote him that way on purpose, and you’re far from the only one who’s said ‘I forget he was Voldemort! Again!’.

‘rooted in original sin’ - don’t tell me about the overall ‘feel’ of my story until it’s over, please! I also believe humans are not inherently anything, and you’re really just showing me that you also don’t have the ability to fully place yourself in V’s mind during the events of last chapter. Of course he took away her ability to fuck him over. Girl had her wand back for five minutes and immediately seduced and mind raped the ever loving shit out of him. I’ll stop there, but yeah, your opinion is your own, and it sounds like you might be the sort of person who should only read complete fics that are loudly labeled HEA if you’re going to read a Voldemort centric story… or maybe stay away from Voldemort all together?

(And yes, I’m in the US too. It’s more important to talk about than ever imo but again, curate your own experience and smash that back button instead of writing me or any writer who dares to go there a novel next time)

Do you think there’s been an “uwu-fication” of Clark in recent times? I notice that female creators especially really like to depict Clark this way a lot. I find myself mixed, I’m glad this version hits it off with people, especially female fans but I personally find it strips Clark of a lot of edge a lot of the time. Been finding myself thinking about this after G. Willow Wilson’s new AC issue.

It's a big problem yes. Look I am a firm believer that Superman's compassion is his greatest attribute and I'll always be down for stories that showcase that. However, much like the overuse of "hope", some writers can't seem to keep Superman's compassion as one attribute among many. He becomes a parody of himself, a one-dimensional character that lacks a sophisticated psychology or interesting inner life to flesh him out. For the record this is a trend that started loooooooong before MAWS and it certainly isn't women specific. Gail Simone's recent Action arc showed a tough as nails Superman. In fact if you want the story that leans into that harder than anything else, For All Seasons is the real culprit.

May also be in part a reaction against the DCEU Superman and all the other evil Supermen of the past decade. Retreating back into "cozycore" Superman who is a wholesome contrast to an increasingly nihlistic reality is a potent temptation for many. Does Superman no favors though because Spider-Man and Batman can be nice AND actual interesting characters on top of that. He has to be allowed to compete by the same rules. Perhaps Gunn or the success of the more angry and violent Absolute Superman will help free Superman from restrictions by showing you can allow Superman the normal emotional range of your average human being without breaking him. When it comes to MAWS especially I am dying to see that version of Superman struggle with anger or outright hatred even towards Lex in S3. I really want to see that guy's fury roused, because I believe Quaid could give a hell of a performance.

Naruto doesn't have a huge role in this story. Of course, he's also the most important character. Everything in the story turned on his fulcrum - on the actions that he hadn't taken yet, born from the resolve of a man who was still a boy. He saved the day, not through his own actions, but through the ripple effect that his actions had on the world and the people within it. He also has no idea. He also can't read.

Naruto Uzumaki is not particularly interested in a utopia. He's not interested in much beyond ramen and becoming the Hokage and Sasuke. He's not interested in the weight of someone's sins and their potential for redemption, despite being ninja Jesus. I think Naruto only cares about if you want to be a good dude - and if you don't want to be a good dude today, if you'll want to be a good dude tomorrow.

Both Naruto and Sasuke were hurt badly by Konoha. It was important that Sasuke leave Konoha - that he be able to leave the world that hurt him, and find a happier new home. But it was important that Naruto stay too - that there was somebody who was willing to take his crap world by the horns and fix what already exists, to make his world a better place. I think both types of people are necessary, and that the ability to make the choice is necessary too. You can't create a better world by playing by the rules of a broken system, but you can't create a better world by giving up on it either.

I think while reading Naruto you have to kinda go, 'damn bitch stop trying to over perform just to earn the right to exist, their acceptance will always be conditional'. You can't Hokage people into loving you. But you can't create a better world by sticking a bunch of orphans in a tree, either. To me, Naruto is the necessary person who wants to fix what he has.

Obito does not understand that. He's convinced that he understands the gospel of Naruto very well. He does not. At all. He willfully misinterprets it, because it doesn't reinforce what Obito needs to believe. It doesn't let him feel what he wants to feel.

If he did understand it, he would realize something extremely obvious: that Naruto had been able to save Obito because of Naruto's own suffering, not despite it. Obito hypothesizes that suffering creates bad people, but Naruto utilized his own suffering as a tool for empathy and compassion. By Obito's own reasoning, Naruto is a 'dirty person' who wouldn't belong in the own utopia that he inspired. He's trying to build a heaven that Ninja Jesus wouldn't be welcome in. It's a massive logical flaw that Obito knows exists and blatantly ignores.

Why does Obito ignore this? Because it undermines his whole nihlistic, absolutist, deterimistic worldview, mostly. But also because that would imply that people with narrative parallels to Naruto might, hypothetically, deserve to be saved, and would have a place in Utopia. And, like, ya know, can't have that.
