4. Shepard wakes up in an alternate universe. What tips them off?

-> Completely depends on what alternate universe we're talking about, but generally, probably the lack of impending doom. Now I'm tempted to rotate around the idea of a no-reapers au and how that would go with him...

17. Have they done any interviews? How did the first one go? And the most recent?

-> As far as job interviews, no. Sylvan was born on Mindoir with a fairly typical colonist background prior to the slaver raid when he was 16. His family owned a ranch, so he has a long history of hard labor growing up. He got picked up by the Alliance after and was practically inducted in; since then, he's worked his way through the ranks.

He only really got political/news interviews after his survival on Akuze, and even then, thankfully, there were few. Official Alliance channels and media people broadcasted the award ceremony, and his very first interview was the night of. The reporter and outlet had strong ties to Terra Firma, and made a strong attempt to pry into Shepard's past on Mindoir rather than focus on the politics behind the attack on Akuze. Now, Sylvan's plenty polite when he wants to be, his parents raised him right and good.

But they also didn't raise a damned doormat.

To say the interview went poorly would be. Accurate. He uh. Walked out about halfway through because it's difficult to interview a war survivor facing you dead in the eye and saying nothing. Also doesn't help that he has the most unnerving damned eyes, even before Lazarus. A little too green. A little too wide when he's staring, like he's looking right through you.

His track record's been similar since. He's got a simple policy of 'respect for respect' when it comes to dealing with the media, and he will gentle parent the hell out of a leading question. 'Now, you didn't mean to ask me that question like that. Let's try it again.' Generally, the only people that get away with talking down to him are the Council, and even then, not for very long.

27. The last time they were rude to someone:

-> Today. It was Garrus in the airlock. He probably poked fun at how Shepard broke a couple fingers biotic-charging a krogan because he didn't wait for his shotgun to cool down. In other news, Shepard also punched a turian today (it did not fix his broken fingers).

34. What was Jack’s first impression of shepard? And now?

-> Jack's first impression of Shepard? Easy. She thought he was a pussy because of how he handled Kuril, and reckless for how he handled the aftermath. The recklessness she respected. Miranda viewed it as a stupid risk, which only further cemented that. After her acquisition mission on Purgatory, he was straight up with her and gave her full access to the files she wanted. At that point, she was convinced he had some underlying motive, was trying to get in her head, get her to lower her defenses. That continued for a long time, not helped by his tendency to try to get to know his crew. He would ask questions, she would push back, and he would nod or call her out on it, either way seemingly satisfied by her non-answer, which infuriated the hell out her. It got her to open up more, just trying to figure him out.

Something shifted when he agreed to take her to Pragia. He brought along Garrus, and by that point, Jack had been on enough missions with the two of them to understand how they operated--the banter, the old in-jokes between them, the quick-action tactical commentary as they watched one another's backs. But, while Garrus responded occasionally to her commentary and narration walking through the old facility, clearly sympathetic to her situation and comfortable enough letting her express her anger, Shepard was content to stay mostly silent.

And he told her, it was more a suggestion than anything else, when she finally had a gun on Aresh, "Let him go down with the ship. You don't have to choose for him."

When she activated the detonator on the shuttle, that was when it clicked. There was no motive. He wanted to see what she'd do. Not because he saw her as an object or as an asset or a liability, but because she was a person on his ship, and he'd be damned if he didn't give her the closure she asked for before plotting a course to hell. He didn't think he knew better for her--he wanted to give her options he never had.

She looked further into his past. She asked him about Mindoir. She asked him about Akuze. By the time they met each other while she was teaching at Grissom, she asked him about Garrus and told him, "If you two haven't fucked each other already, then I owe Cerberus' favorite sex symbol more credits than these kids' parents pay me a year. Put his spiky ass in a wedding dress and get it over with already."

Have They

Passed University: Joined the Alliance straight out of school, has done many certifications via that.

Had sex: Before Thane, only two partners and brief relationships with a handful of sexual occasions. With Thane, a lot.

Had sex in public: No and absolutely zero interest in trying

Gotten tattoos: Yes. One is a periwinkle over a pentagon, a favourite flower and a nod to Thane. (I figure tattoo removal is much more doable by this point and Keahi is a sappy romantic anyway).

Gotten piercings: yes, muliple. The infiltration track allowed for slightly more lenient dress code in the alliance so they had some ear piercings, although they often closed over and had to be redone. From ME2 onward, multiple piercings including labret and nose.

Had a broken heart: Sort of. (i'm still working out these backstories so the details are a little bare here). Their two previous relationships were both with people they had strong, significant connections with but both were simply not sustainable. Relationship one was a fellow soldier, work, youth and distance made them decide to end things amicably. He later died in duty, Keahi still mourns him. Their second relationship was with a female turian (get him very drunk and they will admit they 'climbed her like a tree' at a good foot taller than him) again met via work and she wasn't looking for a commitment due to work ambitions, a mutual split but was very sad to end things at the time.

Been in love: Thane, the great love of their life, their soulmate, all the cliches. Thane lives because I am soft and they need to grow old and wrinkly together.

Are They

A cuddler: So cuddly with those they are close to. Minimal bodily contact until that closeness is formed though

Scared easily: Not easily. Keahi is a very chill, level headed person. Until they aren't and then it's nuclear time, all the feels.

Jealous easily: Not especially.

Trustworthy: Ridiculously reliable. I think Keahi is one of those people that could be extremely good at lying and manipulation if they have to and truly believe it's necessary, but would never want to and is a last resort, so if you are putting faith in them there's a 99% chance that faith is extremely well placed.

Family

Siblings: None, but was extremely close to other kids on Mindoir :(

Parents: Mum- Dr. Rita Shepard, Agriculturist. She was head of agricultural sustainability and planning on Mindoir, with specialisations in conservation and zenobotany. She made sure any food production didn't cause ecological problems and was sustainable both for the population and the planet. She named Keahi after the plant of the same name which has red stems, and to honour her Hawaiin mother. Dad- Winston Maynard, primary school teacher. Winston was one of those heart of the community types, a smiley, fun, loving man who idolised his 'big brained beautiul' wife and who was every kids favourite teacher.

Rita and Winston:

Children: Keahi loves kids and has always had a 'if it happens it happens and if not that's ok' attitude to having children of their own, knowing their work is not exactly child friendly. Once settled with Thane, Keahi is very happy taking on a step parent role to Kolyat (once Kolyat warms up to them and wants that too) and Feron. Most drell live in tight knit multi generational family units (Thane and Irikah were outliers there) and post reapers, Keahi and Thane live with Kolyat and Feron and very happily and readily help with raising and doting on grandchild Mina.

Pets: The aquarium is converted into a vivarium and home to some space geckos

Warnings for not much (super mild cursing) except please remember that this reader chose the name Autumn Rose Barnes after rescued from Hydra. Steve calls you 'Rosie,' zero other physical or personal descriptors. It's not an OC! Sorry to lecture, but I've gotten complaints and needed to explain this multiple times...Also, you and Steve adopted a German Shepard mix named Maple. WC 1370

Your Team, an Autumn Is Healing tale

With the fastest, most forceful, super soldier movements you can manage, you shred the single page of paper in your hands.

Those cowards delivered it while you were in your garden. They put it under your door, far back in the building, and they ran away with their tails between their legs.

“‘Not able to authorize you at this time’ MY ASS,” you screech.

“I’m sure the Council didn’t make the decision lightly.” Steve diligently picks up tiny pieces off the carpet as you toss them everywhere.

It’s all you can do not to burst straight through the walls.

“How dare they? Have I not done enough?! What more do they want??”

You aren’t an Avenger, not now, maybe not ever, and the future just looks blank when before it seemed so clear.

You can fight—you should fight,—so why not put you to work? Why not let you on the damn Team?

“They don’t trust me,” you think aloud. “All this power, and no one wants me.”

He stops at the trash and puts his hands on his hips, dejected. “That’s not—Sit down, okay? This isn’t about any of that. You are wanted and trusted here.”

“I can pull my weight, Steve. I can give back what you all have given me. I can be a team player, I promise, please. PLEASE. Tell them. Please tell them I’m ready.”

“Rosie, no one doubts you are ready or capable or any of that, and you are part of the team. More importantly, I am on your team. We all are. Only thing that happened today is some bureaucrats covered their asses—“

You and maple cock your heads in shock, but the language changes nothing.

“Then why can’t I be of use?!”

“Here,” he specifies. “In here, in the compound, of course, we trust you. You know this place. You know all of us. But sweetheart, there is so much out there.”

He changes tactics. “We don’t need—I mean, the Council doesn’t see—you were trained as a soldier, yes, but that’s not who you are. That was so you’d obey their commands. The rest of us, we’re grunts. And frankly, I’m glad you won’t be in harm’s way.”

After thinking for a few seconds, something obvious occurs to you. Steve always fights for what you want, and he’s…not now.

You rush toward him with an accusatory finger up. “You did this.”

“What? No,” Steve balks.

“You did this, didn’t you? That’s what you told them to get them to say ‘no.’ You told them I wasn’t up to it, not a real soldier. You told them I’m not cut out for the Team because you didn’t want me fighting beside you.”

“I said I wanted you safe,” he tries softly.

It’s not a wall you’re about to burst through. “You took my chance!”

“Rosie, that’s ridiculous. I never—“

His phone makes a noise like a foghorn—the call to the jets. Danger. The Team needs him.

You both look up from his hip at the same time, eyes locked between fury and compliance.

“Better go.” You scowl. “Wouldn’t want to hold you back.”

His face falls, and he stands there, listening to the alarm sound again, then again.

Without another word, Steve gives up and leaves.

You lock the door and remove his entrance privileges. It won’t keep him out, but it will slow him down and make a point when he returns.

If he wants to keep the battlefield personal, then this can be your domain. He can apply to participate. He can go through a crucible of grueling interviews and tests and then last-minute, made-up tests because they just wanted to find one reason…

And Steve handed it to them on a silver platter.

When he comes back he tries the door. You can hear the mechanical lock beep in rejection of his hand print. He tries again. He knocks, he calls out with a louder knock, and then, finally, he uses the override command, the one that they technically all have because you can’t be trusted. Not really. Not fully.

He enters the dark rooms quietly.

You’re on the bed, laying with your hands wedged between your thighs, Maple’s belly warming your feet, the window blinds all the way up, moonlight and stars visible as a small comfort.

He doesn’t know if you’re asleep or awake until you speak.

“What was the point—why put me through all this if I can’t help? Am I just a thing to breed?”

“Rosie, honey, that is not and never has been true.” Clearly cautious from your argument, Steve stays a short distance away.

“Then why did no one look for me? I was right there, strapped down for years, because that was my purpose, that’s what I was created fo—”

“So was I,” he exclaims gruffly. “I was made to do one thing, and one thing only, and I still sat in the Arctic for seventy years! It doesn’t prove shit—“ he kneels down beside the bed, holding your hands and whispering pleas into you skin “—and no one but you can define your purpose.” 

Maple whines and bows her head over the edge.

”I want you,” he continues. “I trust you. If it makes me selfish to…fine, I’m selfish. So be it. I don’t want you out there with me, I’m sorry. I don’t. See, I lost people when they got sick, when they went to war, when I went to war, when I came back, when I didn’t come back.”

He pauses, tracing small patterns over your thumb while he squeezes your hands.

“Please. Please, sweetheart. Just give me this one thing because even though you have a serum, I can’t…I can’t imagine…if anything ever…

“We are super. We are not indestructible,” he admits. “Losing you would destroy me.”

Steve looks fragile, his features shadowed by more than the night.

“You don’t need to become an Avenger. We are already on your team. We are your team. You have nothing to earn. You have nothing to fight for. We lo—I love you. I’m in awe of you because you became so much more than they tried to make you be.”

The dog howls gently in agreement.

“Me and Maple are your biggest fans, too.”

Said ‘fan’ harrumphs on cue, making Steve burst into a smile.

“There’s a whole fan club. We have a slogan—‘Go Autumn’—there’s gonna be t-shirts and scarves.” He drops your hand to spring up. “We’re your cheerleaders, right, girl? See?”

He hurdles over you to his side of the bed and starts hopping up and down with his fists in the air. Maple goes ballistic barking.

“RAH, RAH, ROSIE! RAH, RAH, ROSIE!”

Steven Grant Rogers, born the fourth of July, one-hundred plus years ago, jumps on the bed, bouncing till you reluctantly roll off and stand. 

Maple gets down with Steve, panting, and watches intently, thinking her dad has really lost the plot in a super fun way. Maybe she’ll get a treat even.

He steps in front of you, running his fingers through his disheveled hair.

“Wha’d’ya say, Miss, can I be on your team? Do you want me? You trust me?”

If you weren’t so close to tears, you would have answered him immediately. Instead, you hum.

He scoffs. “You Barneses are so picky.”

Steve pulls you into a hug, lifts your chin and says softly against your lips, “go, Autumn, go,” before capturing you in his zeal.

The truth of it is you know he wants you, and you know he trusts you. Knowing that Steve feared for your safety makes you more anxious to have him out there.

You hold him tighter.

He's right, of course, that risk is everywhere and nothing is promised. How could he say 'no' to peace of mind? You'll never be lost. He will never lose this one thing.

Though you will not be joining the Avengers, one of the many things you are a part of is this: a slow dance in the dark with a good man.

A slow, slow dance between his tongue and yours, that is.

After what feels like hours of him kissing you so sweetly, Maple is bored and stretching into a ready stance.

She yips indignantly.

You pull away from Steve. “I know, girl. I always want him to come home, too.”

He rests his forehead to yours. “She’s right. I should respect her mom’s independence.”

Maple squeals and flicks her head (and ears) to the side. Where’s her treat, you crazies? She put up with your tension all night, and she deserves a reward.

That's all that Akuze came down to, in the end. A brief, simple mistake that could have happened to anyone, that happens a thousand times with no consequence.

Would the unit have survived, if Adrian hadn't dozed off during her watch? Would she have noticed any signs, gotten a distress call out any sooner - and if so, would that time make any difference, against how long it took any message to get through, from such a remote world?

It doesn't matter how many times she asks them, in her dreams. If those who died under her command have any answers, they aren't sharing.

How your character sees themselves:

All Adrian really can see in herself, at least for a very long time, is... pieces. Hopes and dreams that others have placed on her, things she was meant to do, things she wanted to do, but all in scattered fragments that never quite mesh together. (And in canon, they never do, really.)

Their closest relationships (romantic and platonic):

Romance was never a factor in Adrian's thoughts on the future, even when she thought she had a future. When she's recruiting for an explicit suicide mission, and the recruit informs her that he doesn't have long to live anyway?

There's no trying to pretend, with Thane. Here's someone who doesn't need false optimism or for her to put on a brave face, someone who's tried and failed and is just trying to do some good, someone who understands the sense of living only to be of service to others. It's almost funny, how it happens, how that shared sense of sorrow and doom turns into one of the greatest joys in Shepard's life - but she never regrets it, no matter how it turns out.

Honestly there's a few good answers for the platonic relationships - but for ones I've actually got a good song for, we're going with Tali!

Tali's... honestly, I think Tali kind of reminds Adrian a little of her younger self, or kind of a younger sister she never had. Aside from their being able to bond over fiddling with tech, Tali's just - she's sweet! She's fun and optimistic - but not blindly so, she's been through enough shit that it's a very deliberate optimism, and Adrian wants so badly to see her succeed.

Her choices are made - they're all awful, so she chooses the one that (hopefully - she doesn't truly trust this construct, but she's bleeding out and this is the end, no matter what) seems as if it will lead to the least amount of loss. But, whatever happens - there is a relief, as she gives herself to that strange energy pouring up from the Crucible. She has done all she can, and perhaps rather selfishly... all she thinks of, in those last moments? All that comes to mind is the sea, whether she's drifting forever in the blue like the first time she died, or if perhaps this time, there will be a shore - or even if there's nothing but the cold and dark, at least, it's finally over.

AU -

Well, all Adrian ever wanted to do in the Alliance was fiddle with computers and tech. And in this end... in this end there's a little less resignation, a little more hope, more belief in taking a wild chance - after all, what do they have to lose? A few more lives saved. A little less injury, so rather than accept the proposed choices, Shepard is lucid enough to propose another line of thought - the Crucible, the Starchild, either they're all tech that can be repogrammed... or, this being is its own entity, and capable of making choices beyond the groundwork its creators laid out. Wouldn't it be interesting, to see what happens next to the cycle that's gotten this far?

It's not quite a desert, but certainly somewhere arid - but there's lights visible in the distance, shapes suggesting a small town on some colony world. Not utterly remote and removed from the galaxy at large, but certainly a little more... distant. A quiet place, even quieter up on this ridge that overlooks it. There's hardly any sound but the wind rippling through the sparse, tall grasses; the slight shift of gravel and dirt and an occasional, dull metallic thud. We see a human haul themself up those last couple of steps, bracing first against a cane, then against their drell companion as they find somewhere to sit together, watching as sunset steals over the town, and the first twilight stars appear on the horizon.

4. What detail in [insert fic] are you really proud of?

I already answered this but you know what I'm answering it again!!! In Electric Sheep Garrus is controlled by a control chip that's slowly rewriting his thoughts. (Spoilers ahead) He ends up killing an OC character Dr. Nars (Tali's replacement, who was killed in Turn Left), and then kills Kasumi during her loyalty mission at Hock's mansion. And even though he didn't know he was going to kill them before it happens, his control chip always illudes to exactly how they die. Right before a geth Colossus drops on the scene, Garrus imagines Dr. Nars exploding in a great big ball of light. And when Kasumi starts to suspect that Garrus is playing Cerberus, he imagines what he head would look like detached from her body. I wanted to show that it was that subconscious knowledge coming from the higher ups that control Garrus is ebbing into his thought process (and I'm alluding to psst one more death, if anyone can guess based on what he fantasizes about)

9. How do you find new fic to read?

GIRL I DON'T I really don't read a lot of fic, and if I do it's always because a mutual is posting about it on tumblr/part of a fan event. I absolutely need to get better at reading because I've discovered some really good ones out there I just have zero time

37. Promote one of your own “deep cut” fics (an underrated one, or one that never got as much traction as you think it deserves!). What do you like about it?

The first longfic I wrote was called The Machiavelli Project that I wrote before I got a tumblr to promote it and I absolutely adore that fic. It's set between ME2 (Arrival) and ME3, it reads as a side quest that goes horribly wrong. Shepard responds to an SOS call on a mine in an asteroid, but when she arrives at the the scene she can't find any miners, she's having insane PTSD flashbacks, and the VI is doing things VIs shouldn't do. It turns into her mission to take down a crooked corporation that's exploiting forces of the galaxy that no organic can truly understand (and gives that sweet sweet slowburn between a Shep/Garrus that were too chicken to get together during the events of ME2). I will get on a rooftop and scream about this fic, I adore it, and I was playing with promoting it anyway on here so this is like the soft launch lmaooo

I wrote a bit for Electric Sheep yesterday!

Her words got cut off, not by any interruptions, but a sound. Metal on metal joints, electronic whirring, uniformed stepping rhythmically on the tile. Garrus swore.  He hated security mechs.  Shepard rushed behind one of the storage crates for cover. One by one, the rest of the crew came pouring from the tunnel-- Zaeed with a great smear of blood on his face, Mordin significantly paler than his normal tone-- and huddled behind, creating a perimeter. Jack and Kaidan glowed blue, Kal’Reegar installed his inferno ammo, tossing Jacob an extra set of clips. They were all preparing for battle.  All of them, except for Garrus. His HUD lit up as he went to follow Shepard, halting him in his steps. It felt unnatural to not follow her, to be out in the open.  [redacted]: Just a few mechs. [redacted]: You’ve faced worse. [redacted]: That body of yours is meant to withstand it, boy.

How I feel about this character

Kasumi: She's the coolest ngl, her design is very visually appealing (if annoying from a modding perspective with the baked in shadows). immediately fun from an introduction to a character you wish wasn't dlc so you can see her more often and actually speak to her normally beyond ambients. plus, she has a heist mission. but to be a little more serious, she's a fun look at a different character archetype away from killers and military and cops to a thief doing her own thing and killing it.

Thane: in a vacuum, he's cool. in reality, I think he's overrated. I find the drell interesting with the recall, religion, the dynamics with the hanar, but honestly? thane does not do it for me. I honestly don't know why... I think a mix of the "assassin who repents" and "terrible father" is probably why, but he's just there for me. cool design though.

All the people I ship romantically with this character

Kasumi: girl you turned me onto nyreen x kasumi and I'm here for it. I think she would have also been a great romance option for Shepard, even if I don't have any Shepard OCs for her. I also think Kasumi/Tali is cute - hacker girls bonding over drones and scripts and maybe a little about shrouding your identity...

Thane: honestly, nothing much. again, thane's just kind of there for me so I don't have much to offer.

My non-romantic OTP for this character

Kasumi: I'm a bit obvious but c'mon I think zaeed and her would have such great conversations. swapping stories. zaeed talking about his own heists and you know kasumi would pipe in on how she could do it better. with less killing. and zaeed would grumble about it and probably acquiesce to some of her points. I can also see some tech swapping too -- I think zaeed is a munitions and explosives expert and probably has many opinions on smoke grenades. kasumi likely does her own thing and they end up with many a debate on best practices. dlc bonding with dlc.

Thane: ngl, I think Thane and Ashley would have had some interesting conversations while in huerta together. comparing perspectives on religion. thane sharing drell literature and ashley sharing her own favorites. likely a kindred spirit in some aspects - but as ashley religion helps her inform her perspective on the galaxy, thane's religion helps him inform his perspective on his role as an assassin, and I can see them talking a lot about that.

My unpopular opinion about this character

Kasumi: I'm not sure if this is unpopular but while I don't ship Kasumi/Jacob, I think it's a fun part of her character that she's so open on who she likes, and I think ME could've done more with companion relationships since it's very poor in that area IMO

Thane: He's just not that interesting to me and he's relatively high on the list of "characters I'd remove to make ME2 less bloated"

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

Kasumi: I just wanted more of her ngl. I think she would've been a fun part of the casino mission in the Citadel DLC. she's probably the best person to have on hand for a heist mission and would've been fun to see what she would've been like on the casino mission.

Thane: As much as I'm very meh about his character he didn't deserve to die by Kai Leng. That's just rude of the developers and their fight scene made zero sense

Rennah Shepard

Rennah means 'Born Again' or 'Rebirth' - if you've read my longfic Lights in the Sky, you'll know that this name is oddly perfect for her, because by the end of the story Rennah is a whole new person.

Gina Shepard

Gina means 'Queen' - and she is a bit of a queen in Kaidan's eyes! Though she has a horrible opinion of herself and struggles to see her own worth, especially after she is infected with the Reaper Virus. She's my main shepard I write about these days and I love her!

Pandora Shepard

Pandora means 'Gift' or 'All Giving' but of course if you know your mythology you know that Pandora's name has a whole lot of other implied meaning. She's the one who romances Subject Zero Kaidan and is the daughter of Admiral Hackett, and unfortunately she brings trouble wherever she goes. I need to finish her story eventually - and it won't be a typical Shepard tale, asw much because of who she is, as because of who she loves.

Sirius Ryder

Sirius means the brightest star, and she was named this because she was born with eyes that glowed with biotics. She fell in love with Reyes and their story is probably my all time favourite that I've written.

Zi (Zillia) Shepard

Zillia means Shadow. I don't really know what to say - she's my Shep who romances Kaidan and Vega. They have a rough start but end up in post war bliss together.
