Continuing with my weird and spooky historical destinations in Kansas, I visited Pioneer Cemetery, located at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. Originally called Oread Cemetery, the oldest graves date back to the 1850’s. A large portion of the graves belong to the 13th Wisconsin Volunteer infantry, who began to be interred there in 1862. The victims of Quantrill’s raid were buried there in 1863, but a majority of the graves were moved to Oak Hill Cemetery upon its construction in 1865. 

One of the most notable graves belongs to Thomas W. Barber, an abolitionist shot by pro-slavery men in 1855. Allegedly, the famous Kansan abolitionist John Brown looked upon Barber’s body at the Eldridge Hotel in Lawrence, and called his death “one of the sure results of the Civil War.” A poem written by John Greenleaf Whittier is engraved on stones near Barber’s final resting place. 

The graveyard was rehabbed and  renamed Pioneer Cemetery in 1928, but fell into disrepair by the 1950’s. The cemetery went unused until the burial of scientist and KU alum Elmer McCollum, known for discovering vitamin A, in 1968. 

The cemetery has since been restored, and is now owned and run by the KU Endowment.  According to an article in the Lawrence Journal World, “university faculty and staff who served at least 15 years are eligible for burial there,” as are “distinguished Service Citation winners, trustees of the Endowment Association and members of the Alumni Association’s board of directors.” 

Because of the violence associated with the burials there, many believe the cemetery is haunted. While I was unable to uncover any specific ghost stories, visitors have reported the feeling of unseen presences and phantom images appearing in their photographs. I did not encounter the paranormal on my visit, but found it peaceful and serene. Pioneer is in a quiet location on the West part of the campus, off the beaten path from the main buildings and residence halls, and my partner and I were the only two people there. Every so often, a car or bus passed by. As I walked through the quiet graves, I felt an overwhelming sensation of peace, and I wished that I’d spent more time there as a KU student.
