The Sonic Movie Franchise and The Found Family Trope

A personal request by my dear moot and friend @writer--in--theory, which I am entirely happy to deliver on.

Feel free to point out inconsistencies or anything you think I can improve on in my analysis.

Alright, so, the Found Family trope. Extremely popular and very well done, along with one of the tropes I find the most fulfilling to write in to fanfiction.

As I, and I believe most people in fandom, consider the Sonic movies to be an AU, I’m not going to be comparing specific relationships or characterization to any other games or media, other than that the familial aspect is more apparent in these films than in most games, and I haven’t read enough of the comics, either Archie or IDW to develop opinions as to those.

The Sonic movies do a fascinating job at truly displaying and fleshing out that found family trope that is more of a notion or behavioral quirk between characters in most games. They aren’t given as much concrete development in games as the movies have allowed, since the Sonic games focused more on the gameplay aspect rather than a more slice-of-life/slower storyline (a story that takes its time to create relationships between characters) that found families are most often found in.

I'm going to go by specific character relationships, and connect them as needed.

Sonic's Characterization

The first Sonic movie begins with Sonic losing his only parental figure, an extremely traumatic event that leaves a hole in him for the rest of the series and leaves him to fend for himself during his most formative years. He grows up alone, but retains the sassy, care-free demeanor.

I believe the reason he's still so outwardly unaffected by that trauma is that he coped for much of the unseen years between Longclaw's death and formally meeting the Wachowskis through exploring the world. He finds a home in Green Hill because he sees a home in the Wachowskis. We know that he had already been "spying" on them for a while and hanging around their house without them knowing. And he feels that longing for a home, a family, for what he had with Longclaw, and he wants that back.

But he is still aware of what he is, of how they might see him, as only an alien. And that is what keeps him away, that fear of the possibility and being rejected again, being alone again. So he's content with just viewing their life, imagining himself with Tom and Maddie.

I think that's one of my favorite parts of Movie!Sonic. Despite many of his characterizations by the fandom is as an emotionally unavailable character, Movie!Sonic is emotionally intelligent, whether already or as a result of having to grow up too soon. To take care of himself early on, and as much as he may boast or pride that he is totally fine having fun and running around the world, he is, in the end, running to escape the possibility of standing still and realizing that he is still incredibly lonely. While he may not explicitly say it, much of that initial montage in his cave and at Tom and Maddie's movie night, from the outside always looking in, he is aware of what he feels. However, that fear keeps him away.

It pushes him to the baseball diamond, and him running to escape the emotions, the memories, and his imagination, creates that very first outburst of incredible energy and power that alerts the real danger (GUN).

It's only the possibility of being found out by an unknown danger, being attacked and forced out of his cave, out of his home yet again, that forces him to finally act. Not quite meet the Wachowskis yet, as that isn't his intention.

But he does knowingly go to the only other place he feels safe at. The Wachowski's home.

He realizes that he needs to run to escape this danger, doing what Longclaw's last words bade him do before she sacrificed herself for him, but is found by Tom (and promptly shot with a tranquilizer, but, y'know, it starts rocky sometimes!!).

As for the Wachowski's, as original characters we have nothing to expect of them. But they are immediately charming and unique and, while understandably wary of Sonic at first, immediately realize the danger he's in and want to help him.

Sonic and Tom Wachowski

An obvious father-son relationship within the overarching found family (which will eventually include Tails and Knuckles, but I'll get to them later). However, Tom's interactions with Sonic are written in a way that feels incredibly sincere and I think their believability together made my skepticism for humans being related to Sonic (as a character and as a story) disappear.

Tom is obviously skeptical as well at first, especially after finding out that Sonic had just been spying on them for years. But when he learns of Sonic’s past and how he’s been alone for all of the years after that, he understands. He wants to protect Sonic from whoever is hunting him, from experiencing that loneliness again, and after getting to know that little blue blur, is willing to do anything to make sure that Sonic is safe, that he has a home.

And Sonic is bracing for the inevitable rejection again, after he chooses to stay in Green Hill and not escape to a new world, near the end of the movie.

But they surprise him by showing him that they want him to stay, setting up a whole room for him, and allowing him to be a kid!! He doesn’t have to be alone anymore, because he has a family who wants to take care of him, who cares about him and would literally throw the rest of their life to the side to care for this little hedgehog who crashed into their life one day.

There isn’t enough content between Maddie and Sonic only for me to give her a section as well, but she definitely feels the same. The protectiveness she feels is just as strong.

Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles

Sonic and Tails

Now, for the even better found family relationship. Sorry, as much as I love Tom and Sonic, these two will forever be my heart.

Tails, in the movie, is also coming from another planet, bullied and ostracized from his village most of his life for the mutation causing his double tails. He hears news of a blue speedster and, beginning to practically idolize him, uses his capability with technology to track Sonic down. While it’s barely explained why Tails is looking for Sonic in the first place, he is clearly expecting for something to happen to Sonic, saying that he hopes he “isn’t too late.” What exactly, he’s worried about, isn’t explained either, and he and Sonic are pulled into the race to find the Master Emerald against Robotnik and Knuckles.

Tails is, thankfully, not characterized as naive or too young to be responsible, which I am glad for, as I was initially worried that they’d infantilize him as a result of him just being a younger kid. He wants to prove himself, rather, and shows his skills through his gadgetry and eagerness to help Sonic, and his initial adoration and interest in Sonic changes into something more brotherly. Tails was inspired by Sonic and saw someone who was clearly different, other. Just like him. And he thought that if Sonic could be great, then maybe he could too, and his otherness didn’t have to stop him.

My favorite scene for this is when they’re in the inn in Siberia, and both of them are finally able to see a more relaxed, actual child-like version of the other.

Sonic is told that he’s Tails’ first real friend, the first person to truly care about him, and to not judge him for his appearance or his interest in tech. And Tails is surprised by this fact, not sure at first if Sonic is being genuine, but once realizing that he is, hugs Sonic and reveals the parts of himself, the feelings and his past, that he hid and felt shame for for so long.

Sonic and Knuckles

Sonic and Knuckles have a classic rivals to friends relationship and it was probably one of my favorite parts of the movie besides Sonic and Tails being absolutely adorable.

Knuckles is another character who is alone, the last of his kind, a race of fierce warriors and protectors, who value loyalty, strength, and honor above all. He’s seemingly destined for a solitary life, much like Sonic assumed himself to be, from the beginning of the movie, and his lack of knowledge of the world he is adjusting to allows him to be taken advantage of by Robotnik so easily.

(Christ, loneliness and loss is a really reoccurring theme, and I haven’t even gotten to Shadow yet)

Knuckles is only able to truly interact with and talk with Sonic after he is betrayed by Robotnik, breaking one of his key values and shattering his worldview and who he believed was the right side. However, he fully expects Sonic to leave him behind as well after the temple battle, the flood overtaking him. But Sonic, seeing only someone who was taken advantage of and who also lost everything he loved, chooses to save him, nearly sacrificing himself in the process. Knuckles also saves Sonic as well, after realizing that Sonic didn’t swim to the surface with him.

Sonic chooses to deliberately ignore that Knuckles was apart of the tribe that killed Longclaw, letting it bring them together in grief instead of driving them apart, and doesn’t care that Knuckles has been attacking him since they met, as Sonic understands why and forgives him for that. Knuckles doesn’t understand, at first, why Sonic saved him in the first place, but when Sonic explains his hero concept and that he needs to take responsibility for others and couldn’t just let Knuckles die, Knuckles sees who Sonic is.

And a mutual respect is gained.

Knuckles, while he is incredibly blunt, deliberate, and honest, understands this. He sees a pure will that he admires in Sonic.

Altogether . .

The third movie only strengthens their bond, as both Tails and Knuckles have been accepted into the family, as the Wachowski’s are happy to adopt another couple of super powered alien kids.

Tails and Knuckles, while still sidelined due to Shadow’s storyline, are key factors in how their team functions and they work the best together. This is a result of the familial relationship formed in the time between movies 2 and 3, as they, during that time, are able to live together and learn from each other.

While they do have a 3rd act separation that I was worried about, it’s established that it’s only allowed through the trust formed between Sonic and Knuckles. Which they handled perfectly, as it wasn’t out of character and wasn’t even malicious, it was a result of the trust between all three of them. They all suffered when Tom was critically injured, they all watched the ambulance drive off with the same, devastated look. They had become so close over these few months together.

Their relationship becomes the most adorable and genuine of sibling relationships, as they are all able to bond over discovering the world, learning and playing and being allowed to be kids. I know I emphasized this before but I will do it again: What makes this found family so incredibly strong is that all of them are able to learn from each other, to build and grow alongside each other and they have all greatly affected each other’s lives in ways that changed them for the better.

Their shared experiences of otherness, of loss, of grief, brought them together into warmer emotions of family, of friendship, of trust.

That is the basis of a found family. People brought together through mutual respect, understanding, and love.

Outside of Sonic-related relationships . . .

Shadow and Maria

Shadow crashed into Earth from a meteorite and supposedly spent the first moments of his life on Earth in a lab, in a tube, isolated but for scientists who would stare and write and run tests and treat him as, honestly, less than a being with a conscience.

The time before Maria was probably extremely lonely, despite him being surrounded by people, setting a precedent that Shadow would assume that humans wouldn’t want anything to do with him, didn’t care about him aside for his powers.

But when he meets Maria, she immediately interacts with him, smiles and mocks him playfully, not for the purpose of analyzing him, but just because he was another kid in the lab, and she wanted to be friends out of pure interest for who Shadow was, not his alien blood.

The montages of their time together in the lab, spent having fun running around the halls, Maria introducing Shadow to dancing and music and sweets and movies and everything he would never have gotten to experience if not for her, only reinforce their close bond, the family he found with her. She was the only one who could understand him in the lab, probably in his whole life, as we have no clue what happened before he crashed to Earth.

The rooftop scene is my personal favorite, as Shadow feels comfortable, safe enough, to confide in Maria about his self-consciousness, his fear that his power will make him only terrifying, only a monster.

Maria comforts him, telling him that he can choose who he wants to be for himself, that he’ll know who he wants to be in his heart. She teaches him that his purpose and life doesn’t have to be dictated by what he possesses or what he appears to be, as his actions and decisions are what truly matter.

That even when a star has long since faded, their light still shines.

This barely concealed metaphor for the effect your life can have on the people you know is beautifully poetic, and reminds Shadow, near the end, of what his true goal should’ve been.

That Maria would have never wanted him to hurt others, to destroy the world, in order to avenge her. Because she loved the world. And Shadow would never want to destroy what she loved.

They make me hurt in the best way. Maria’s line about a star’s light still shining even after it’s long since faded breaks me every time.

Agent Stone and Ivo Robotnik

I know that this isn’t necessarily found family in the familial sense, but if you don’t ship them or believe them to be romantic, don’t worry, this further analysis is purely from a non-shipping perspective.

While the power dynamic is clearly tilted towards Ivo, and I think this acknowledgement of the relationship is very one-sided in the way that Stone is very aware of how he feels towards Ivo, with his devotion and willingness to do whatever it takes for Ivo, while Ivo does not outwardly admit how attached he’d become to his agent, his presence and intelligence, and that he appreciates and needs Stone’s company. Ivo has never spoken his feelings aloud while Stone has practically worn them on his sleeve.

My point is that the third movie, in terms of Ivo’s plot, outlines the choice between blood relations and your chosen family.

Ivo has a chosen family, which consists of only Stone. He’s never had a true family before, no blood relatives, no parents to speak of, and when he discovers Gerald, who may be the first blood family he’s ever had, he begins to value blood over chosen, leaving Stone to pursue a life with his grandpappy over him.

However, when it’s revealed that Gerald never cared about Ivo in the first place, only needing him to be able to achieve his goal of destroying the world in order to avenge Maria, even going far enough to say that Ivo could never be Maria. Could never be what Maria was to Gerald. Ivo realizes the mistake he’s made.

Ivo has his hero moment, to attempt to redirect the Eclipse Cannon’s impending explosion, that “if he can’t rule the world, he might as well save it.” He is still, as much as he may say he hates it, affected by his humanity.

And when giving his final livestream, he finally speaks aloud the feelings, the effect Stone has had on him, in his own words that he knew Stone would know the true, sincere meaning of. That he truly did value him and care about him (“I love the way you make them”), which wasn’t even just about the work Stone did for him, but also what Stone brought to his life, that consolation and trust.

Ivo said that Stone was the only person in his life he could trust. That he was the only person who truly cared about him. As tragic as that sentiment is, he’s right. Stone loved Ivo unconditionally, and Ivo didn’t realize this, didn’t realize that he also cared for Stone, until it was too late for him, but not too late for him to make sure that Stone lived.

All in all, the Found Family dynamic, in all of its forms, from parental to siblings to a weird boss-employee relationship, is practically perfect.

These relationships are well-built, developed by shared experiences that characters bond and heal over, mutual respect for each other, a strong trust, and an unconditional love between them.

Oh, the unconditional love is the most important part. Because that is what brings so many people into the found family trope.

Those who are experienced with not getting that constant trust and unbreakable bond from blood, seek that love from others. Build their own family. And the families crafted in these films are beautiful.

I loved the mini series it was a nice break from the post Jess was making at the time ( a lot of myst content ) but also it was just super cool?? Seeing the mod mod world again I do wish she brought back Reese n marsh just cause I loved those two brothers as a kid but not the point. It was just super cool seeing an MCD character in modern times?? Especially with an Aphmau who didn’t know ANYTHING of this character like if it was mystreet Aphmau she would’ve made fun or poked at Laurance since she knew him but this Aphmau hadn’t a clue who he was?? Which omg opened to so much character for Laurance n void! Aphmau!! It didn’t show Casanova Laurance it just showed a guard who thought void!Aph was his and even after the fact he wanted to stay by her , ALSO JUST I KNOW I KEEP BRINGING IT UP BUT THEIR DYNAMICSSS AHHH ITS SO FUNNY !! I’d like to think void!Aph doesn’t just forget about Laurance , but she does look back at the weird medieval guard who kept her safe for those few knights a lot and often chats to Tommy about him

Void Aphmau does talk to Laurance about MCD!Aphmau and she out right tells him to take his chance on her, ofc Laurance tells her he’s waiting for Garroth to tell his feelings but void Aphmau laughs at him straight up and teases if he even likes her if he’s waiting for another man to confess. Laurances get fed up with her comment but he does think about that comment a lot even though he knows she knows nothing about his life .

Laurance when he talks to Tommy can’t help but see Malachi weirdly enough

Laurance out of habit moves void Aphmaus hair out of her face as he does to MCD Aphmau but voidaph is purposely outing her hair in her face

Once when Laurance was watching over void Aph as she slept he lightly grazed his hand on her cheek where MCD!aphmaus mark would be. Tommy called him out for being weird

hello !!!!!!!!! im back on the grid again and with a bang, here to deliver a comic ive been working on since september ! its gonna be pretty messy, inconsistent, and just purely me having fun . therell be a lot of things ive thought through thoroughly, and therell be some things i forgot to even existed ! all in all this is a comic about a character whos been gone for a year and one that doesnt even exist, so its all built from me being silly

there will be sensitive topics discussed or depicted ! those will have a warning placed beforehand for each update, even though many of these things are meant to be up to interpretation or implied . some anecdotes ive written have been quite heavy though, so if i end up finishing them, listen to the content warnings

this will be a non-linear story, so instead of chapters i have named them anecdotes . they will be moreso bits and pieces of my o!quackity and o!wilbur's lives, specifically of them together, so some parts will be before or after others . some parts will reference each other, or foreshadow, but u likely wont need to read the anecdotes in any specific order

^ and so, because of this, the dynamics of wwtc&s!tntduo will change and will be inconsistent, just as what happens with real people if u look into random pockets of their life . some anecdotes theyll be more comfortable with each other, some theyll be more spiteful, some theyll be more awkward, etc. especially since oquackity has no character and owilbur is underdeveloped

this comic is a lot about change but also keeping familiarity in said change, which is totally not just an excuse for my inconsistent ass nope nuh-nuh. this time its actually relevant to the characters !!!!

and YEAH . i am doing all this just bc cc!quackity mentioned in the 2021 wine stream that he was in the originssmp discord and wanted to actually play but never did . im still mad abt it so ive decided to just make shit up now 👍

ok firstly sorry for how disjointed this will be, secondly id love to hear anyones opinions on this so please dm or comment or anything!!!!

with how little attention there is to the other paladins aside klance, its no wonder that shiro is so one dimensional to the fandom. i mean like even in the show he’s not a greatly written character. we dont know his motivations, background, family, what he does for leisure, we see all of the other paladins have hobbies but NOTHING for shiro. his character is majorly inconsistent and that can just be blamed on kuron. he gets entirely shafted for s8 after his clone was allegedly the one we saw for like 5 whole seasons. i’m just saying he’s extremely underutilized and written. we harp on lance and hunk not getting any arcs but at least they have substance. i’d wager the shiro we see around the paladins isnt truly him either, yet we never get to see him outside of “commander” mode. theres a reason why adashi and curtis x shiro content depicts him so differently, because he would probably act less strict around those his age who he is close to!! he was traumatized as a literal pow by fucking aliens for a year or more for fucks sake.

actually ny initial point was just for the fandom to treat him more like a guy. he definitely had maladaptive coping mechanisms. he’s worse than keith, keeping everyone at arms length away. he HAS to be strong for everyone! he’s the only decorated piloted on voltron! the oldest human!! they all look to him for support. we see him sillier at times and id like to think thats the real him. imo, shiro is considerate, loyal, a bit stubborn, curious, strong-willed, resilient, passionate, silly, charming, humorous, disciplined, generous, intelligent, and responsible. but he is also self-sacrificing, emotionally reserved, exhausted, having to choose between saving more people or his team in a literal war, would be the type to abuse substances for coping, probably depressed and canonically disabled mentally and physically (PTSD). he could’ve been so good for rep and then they just … didnt do anything w him. lol! so funny thanks voltron writers. um no conclusion thats it thanks

So here are some of my high noon headcanons >:3c

Mordred has a lot of really Weird skills and random facts in his brain from growing up with the Saxons. He can drink boiling water and eat basically anything. He knows how to prepare most things that the people in Camelot think are inedible and is often Very Confused abt why the other knights freak out about it.

Marius was the green knight! Not tim! Marius was canonically on fort galfridian at some point, and he also wears green! Plus we know hes a romantic so probably values chivalry and honesty to some extent that would allow Gawain to walk away from their confrontation

In the Saxons culture and religion, the heart is the soul and its incredibly important for someone to consume the souls of the deceased so their ideals and their soul continues to live on through other people. If the person hasn't written in their will who they want to carry on their legacy and soul, the priests will pick someone who they believe would do the soul justice going forward or someone incredibly close to the person to eat the heart during the wake.

The people on the station are all really small and have long ears. Thwyre like fennec foxes to me.

Ace Mordred!! :D hes just like me frr

The Saxons dont really Care about gender or swxuality. Its all very fluid among Saxons, so Mordred being trans wasnt really A Thing. In Camelot, its not exactly Uncommon to be trans, but it is still a bit more othering than if in Saxon camps, and Mordred is weirded out by it.

Lancelot is the tallest of the pendragon polycule. It used to be Ygraine, but since she died its lance. Arthur is the shortest and frustrated about it. Mordred doesn't have any height either hes smol. Gawain makes fun of him for being small even though hes only a little taller than him.

Galehaut is half Saxon. Hes the tallest knight and has never explicitly Said hes half Saxon, but several of the other knights know/are suspicious. Mordred and Galehaut bond over being Saxons.

Ygraine didnt go with Gwen, Arthur, and Lancelot because she was always more of a healer than a fighter, and Mordred was still young and the caravan needed someone to lead. She was better with a knife than a gun as well, and had a few from various sources.

The caravan died mostly from a combination of dehydration and heat stroke, though a few did die when the raiding party came. Mostly as a mercy on the Saxons part, as the people there were mostly too weak to fight back.

The stations nights are inconsistent in length and when they happen. As time has worn on the automated cycles started getting old and the maintenance they needed was never able to happen, so the times of day can be really long and nights really short, or night could last an actually decently long time.it varies

The Saxons record history mostly through oral storytelling, whereas Camelot has a lot more physical records and writing. Mordred doesnt actually know how to read very well and has to read really slowly.

Ygraine taught Gawain how to ride a motorbike and how to fix up machinery and things like that. She would've for Mordred as well but he was too small.

Guenivere and Lancelot met first, but neither know/remember as it was for maybe a couple hours once a while before Arthur and guenivere met.

Mordred gets really anxious and has trouble keeping up relationships, so he has a tendency to pull away or not talk much, which made a lot of the other knights think he was just a loner. He did want to befriend them, did want to make connections, but he couldn't figure out how to approach or when it was okay for him to join conversations. What I'm not projecting thats crazyyy (/j)

He was also really angry as a kid until he started growing out of it and mellowed out. He gkt into fights A Lot, partly because Morgan got into a lot of fights and he was copying a lot of her behaviour. After a couple months had passed from Ygraine's death, he latched onto Morgan.

Cursed Child rant? as a treat? 👉👈

Oh god. Where to even start. Listen, I know some people enjoy CC and I say more power to you. I'm not here to be the fun police and say what people can and can't like or write fic about or derive meaning from or whatever. But for me, personally, Cursed Child is an absolute mess of the worst kind that irritates me on a profound level.

First off, it's completely inconsistent with the canon characterizations and established rules of world building (and JKR didn't even do that much world building so there wasn't that much to keep track of and yet, they couldn't even bother to do that). I mean, Cedric, who tried to give the Triwizard Cup to Harry doesn't win and that somehow causes him to become a Death Eater??? Huh? It's not just ooc. It's bad storytelling. No effort at all went into the story construction. Characters act incredibly childishly and unrealistically and simplistically. The story doesn't feel like it was written by adults. There's no feeling or depth or emotion. It's all plot contrivances and nauseatingly simplistic writing. It isn't a story. It's just some stuff that happens. Because the writers were just like 'eh it's Harry Potter it'll sell.' And that's not art. That's just churned out content. And it bothers me on such a profound level that they did it and got away with it.

I know you like to keep the details of your comic a secret but can you at least elaborate on your perspective about his canon?

Like me personally, I see Zeus as kind of a force of nature, probably cuz he kind of is. He’s the man made character created in order to further understand that which man did not know, like all the gods. And also like the other gods his actions are hard to rationalize cuz they’re so dam inconsistent. One moment he’s treating women as disposable then the next he’s giving Hestia the respect and permission to never marry without any question.

First, I need to make it clear that the Zeus of ancient myths and my Zeus will be different, even though its based on mythology. I am just contributing with my two cents to this range of fanfics that have existed since ancient times.

I truly believe that all the myths we love and explore are basically fanfics based on a religion and that people in the past used them to spread knowledge, comedies, tragedies and just to have fun while keeping the image of their gods alive. That is why the gods are so inconsistent in mythology, since we have many variations even of a single myth and it will always depend on who is telling the story (I wish it were easier to make fics like this about my religion, but I am afraid of the reaction of extremists).

I interpret Zeus in mythology like all the other gods, I no longer make a distinction based on the prejudice of him being a compulsive pervert, he has many sides. As all gods re natural forces, natural as in animal and plants, but also human feelings and urges.

Zeus has some basic pillars that myths tend to respect: He is THE father, he is the fairest one, he is the executioner, he is seductive, he is good-humored (sometimes he makes some bad jokes kkkkkk), he defends natural balance more than anything and he respects the will of others (this seems ironic, but calm down!!). After reading more myths about him and different interpretations, I understood that this modern view of him as a player is completely distorted and ignores all the other myths he participates (I understand that it became his joke, but… some people take it to seriously). So I started to form my own view of his myths.

Most of his adulteries are consensual and when they are not, they remain in that confusing area of ​​what was once consensual, since it is always mentioned that he seduces (for example, how he turned into an bull or a shower of gold because he knew that his potential partners really liked those things - and I find it hilarious that it seems like he didn't even intend to get Danae pregnant kkkkkk, but it ended up happening). This doesn't mean we can't understand that some of these seductions are abusive (like taking the form of a husband to have a night with Persephone or Alcmena), but saying that he discarded them doesn't seem right either. He often protected his lovers and bastards in the most intelligent way possible and sometimes he just walked away too for the good of others. I also hate how we take away any woman agency when it comes to Zeus, like, there re myths that they wanted a casual nigth with a god... stop ignoring that!! (the bad thing is that Zeus is also a pilar for fertility ;w; so if he sleep with someone with a uterus... they will get pregnant).

Going to the non-literal side, we have to remember that Zeus is a god and his adultery should not be seen as the same as that of mortal men. He cant acuatlly be with a mortal on the mortal realm and be a husband there... I also want to say: Hera wasn't that jealousy (I think she herself knew that Zeus needed to spread his blood/goodness in the world - yes, a strong interpretation is that Zeus' affairs are a metaphor for spreading goodness). On the contrary, she respected the bastards who faced their challenges and thus deserved to be close to them on Olympus. Hera tested the heroes for two reasons: So they understood that she and Zeus were in charge (so that no one would think they could usurp the throne, and she protected both her and Zeus, as well as Zeus do his best to also prevent the bastards to die and have some help - both Zeus and Hera do all this from a distance, they want to be fair with eachother) and to see if they deserved to be with the immortals.

It seems ironic today, but Zeus respected everyone's will, but it was in the Greek terms (more of in atenians terms, bc we don't have much of the other states). He accepted the decisions of Hestia, Athena, Artemis… I don't remember seeing him laying a finger on them or wanting them to get married. On the other hand, we have versions of him as father of Persephone, 'selling' her (but the myth was about an arranged marriage and I think it makes sense that it's Zeus, since the focus ends up being Demeter's suffering and this encompasses more complex feelings when losing her daughter because her 'husband' gave her away, while he is still respected and loved socially).

Now the bad side of Zeus in how fair he is. He punishes Apollo in some situations, even though I understand why he needed to do it… But he is not shallow enough to be evil for the sake of evil… It left a impression on me when he killed Asclepius and hurt Apollo (obviously), it is sad and I doubt he enjoyed killing his grandson, but if he didn't do it… the balance of the cycle of death would collapse and he is the one who sustains this cycle with the greatest respect. In fact, my theory is that he doesn't face Nyx, not because he fears her, but because no matter who wins the fight, the world will end (if Nyx dies, the night and everything that comes from the night, for the Greeks like sleep and death, will be disturbed / if Zeus dies the throne will be empty and no other god would do what he does, maybe Athena, but the world was too sexist back then to let her become sovereign and I also think she would be colder than Zeus when making decisions and would have no descendants…). But sometimes he just wanted to prank and have fun! So like, no straight answer here.

In the case of Ganymede, I believe that his myth is more one of those in which Zeus is merely a narrative tool, more than an active role. People just started shipping them and that's when the pederasty boom happened, but before that Ganymede was just a boy who was handsome and got a 'dream job' (poor thing…).

cassian is a pov character, he is a lead. we see him not just through the eyes of jyn but we see some of the events THROUGH HIS EYES which means we would know if he was lying because diego luna is a good actor, and he makes it clear when he is playing a guy who is obfuscating and lying and manipulating (see: kafrene, eadu when he is trying to keep jyn from leaving the ship) versus when he is being vulnerable and HONEST (like when he is holding his tongue and dutifully accepting draven's orders to kill galen both on yavin and en route to eadu, as well as when he is is struggling to kill galen and when hes fighting with jyn about the aftermath and the struggle of having to follow orders even if he disagrees with them ETC)

The Angelus arc is literally the thing that made me actually like BTVS! I was watching it with a fair amount of disinterest as just a thing to half pay attention to in the background. The emotional fraughtness and tragedy goes so hard!

I used to honestly not give a shit about Bangel beyond incidentally how it matters to Buffy. but also idk something has been Happening to me in the last six months and I have been like… clicking through the Bangel tag every once in awhile to look at gifsets lol

I do think Bangel only works with Bangelus on the other side of it though. My general BTVS soapbox is that, first of all, the way they handle souls and vampires is fucking stupid and wildly inconsistent. They just keep breaking their own worldbuilding. But beyond that, that the Angelus arc should’ve frankly culminated in the acknowledgment that like Angel was the blip, the anomaly, and Angelus was the real person. That’s who he’s been for fucking centuries but also on top of that, it more closely aligns with who we see him to be as a human. He has always been a piece of shit awful person and he needs to fucking confront it! Just because he got briefly cursed into developing the pretenses of a moral compass and a shred of empathy it doesn’t mean that actually changed who he is

If we ever wanted to redeem him legit, I think he needed to work his way up from the Angelus persona, even if the culmination of that is simply for him to eventually choose to stay Angel

Anyway the one episode where the ghosts of a teacher and student couple, who died by murder suicide, possess them is honestly one of my favorites. I like Bangel in general more where there’s more acknowledgement of its unsavory elements. But then there’s the bit right afterwards that I really love where, it’s mostly played as a joke, but Angelus, having come back to himself, is like rinsing his mouth out and visibly really bothered by the whole thing. It’s a good microcosm of his reaction to his history with Buffy while-being-Angel. I really like the dynamic where he hates Buffy specifically because she had the audacity to infect him with feelings. That his vindictiveness towards her is a reflection of his disgust for that softer, weaker version of himself. But then he also looks back at it sometimes with a sort of revolted longing because… it was kind of nice to be loved

I like the idea of Angelus as someone who was terrible to begin with! Who then used the excuse of vampirism to become an incredibly prolific serial killer. It isn’t the lack of a soul that made him horrific, or that his demon (stupid worldbuilding!!!) was somehow just exponentially worse than the demons other vampires get. It’s a product of who he was as a human, the values Darla instilled in him as his maker, and then the power and the ability to act with a complete lack of inhibition or consequences that becoming a supernatural creature allowed him. And being forced to think outside of that perspective and to remember that seems to be incredibly disruptive for him

The Judge was one of the weakest Big Bads, but conceptually, I think it’s really interesting that Angelus is literally just self destructing the minute he’s back to his evil self. It’s played off a little as like “he’s evil! of course he wants to end the world” but that hasn’t... ever been his modus operandi? He’s centuries old. If killing himself or ending the world was a high priority I do not think he would’ve made it that long!

Anyway, as for Buffy’s side, I find her turmoil SO SAD but also really compelling. SMG’s acting is so fucking gutting. And the hardening she goes through by the end of the arc is really fun. I would love a hypothetical scenario where Angelus recedes to minor antagonist status or flees for whatever reason. And she just has to like… sit with that emotionally. (That being said I think the sending Angel to hell arc and getting him back from hell arc are really fun so idk how I’d reconcile that but the question was about Bangelus specifically so we don’t have to figure that out rn)

The obvious metaphor the show was going for of like the teen experience of finding out that the person you slept with is terrible, after having been so vulnerable with them, is one that works for me! But I also like how the dynamic literalizes the compartmentalization of loving someone who’s cruel and hurtful. Of not being able to reconcile that they can be capable of such different behavior, but also the undercurrent that it’s maybe not so different after all. Like the Bangel situation is creepy, has always been creepy, though it’s not entirely framed that way. And I really like that Drusilla’s introduction, and the backstory of how Angelus stalked and tormented her, and then the entire Angelus arc where he stalks and torments Buffy, do have the undertones of Angel’s behavior when he’s first introduced and how his relationship with Buffy develops. He was still a fucking stalker! Even if he was a somewhat nicer one lol. He was still playing mind games even if it wasn’t full on psychological warfare. And then there’s obviously how young Buffy was. Like even at his fucking best that man is still a predator lol and lmao

Astarion, Cazador and D&D vampire lore

Let’s talk about D&D vampires and some lore inconsistencies in Baldur’s Gate 3.

BG3 is not a game about vampires. It was obvious we won’t get a playable character who will be 100% vampire spawn from the handbooks - the mechanical balance would be disturbed in comparison with other characters. But we can list some weird stuff and missing aspects. For fun, for fanfiction, for nerdiness.

I still wonder why Cazador even asked Astarion if he wants to be turned. Sure, he could do that, so he could say later „ha ha you asked for it!” but still - weird. Anyway, a vampire lord doesn’t need to ask - he just bites his victim, kills it by drinking its blood and boom, a vampire spawn is made. Almost made…

… because at first the victim needs to be buried and layed in the ground before it rises. That’s the next question - how the hell did Cazador make 7000 spawns? Theoretically he needed to bury them all, dig them back/wait until they dig themselves out or something and transport them to his dungeon without being noticed. His servants could do that for him, but it still is a pretty big thing to cover. Besides…

… accordng to D&D 3.5 edition: "At any given time a vampire may have enslaved spawn totaling no more than twice its own Hit Dice" which means it was impossible for Cazador to create 7000 spawns. Sure, Baldur's Gate 3 uses 5 ed rules, but I'm sure they didn't change this one that much. (BUT! We can interpret this rule as: a vampire lord can create as many spawns as he wants, but the number of enslaved ones is limited. That's all right in this case).

That being said, Astarion is surprised when he discovers that all Cazador’s victims are spawns now. One of his dialogue options is „I thought Cazador was feeding on you”. Well yes, he had to feed on them to make them spawns Astarion, I thought you noticed that yourself 200 years ago. But let's say I understand your confusion, 7000 spawns mean Cazador's hit dice is 3500. Lol.

As a vampire spawn, Astarion should be able to regenerate even without biting someone. To be precise, he should get 10 health points at the start of every turn until he gets killed. But ok, this one doesn’t work in the sun, so let’s say it’s justified… unless the party is in the underdark, shadowlands or other dark place. But yeah, that would be too OP.

Astarion should be afraid of holy symbols, mirrors and garlic. That would be quite irritating, as he wouldn’t be able to even get near Selune's stuff or Lathander’s temple (Lathander HATES the undead, just ask poor Jander Sunstar). But let’s say the tadpole gave him immunity.

Spider climb. Imagine Astarion climbing walls or even ceilings like a damn Spiderman - this is what a regular vampire spawn can do. If the tadpole took away this ability, that’s not very nice of it.

Claws. Astarion should be able to transform his fingers into claws at will. That’s right, it works like another melee weapon.

Coffins, graves et cetera - bunk beds in Cazador's palace are a very anti-canon idea. Because D&D vampires have really traditional weaknesses, they always have to „sleep” in the ground they were buried in to recover - just like Cazador. Jander I mentioned earlier invented an un-lifehack, as he was traveling through Faerun by keeping some of the dirt from his grave in his pocket. He was scattering it in the place he wanted to rest for some time.

A vampire spawn can be controlled or banished by clerics like any other undead. That's right, when Shadowheart casts this one, Astarion should roll the dice, or else he will have to run away from her like those zombies you banished during your playthrough.

Last but not least, vampires get damage if they are in the flowing water, for example river, but you already know this one from the early access Astarion. Shame they removed it, in was a bit irritating but I loved it. It reminded me Astarion is a vampire not only in the dialogues.

That's all I can think of now. My knowledge is a mix of 3.5 and 5 ed, do with it what you want. I wouldn't mind more lore accuarte Astarion fanfics though.

I binge watched Study Group in three days! Just a lot of very fun action scenes and humor. Main thoughts:

-Any time Yoon Ga-min uses one of "uncle's forbidden techniques" it's just so badass and fun. But I need to see the full list! also possibly a training montage.

-I enjoyed the background music, very hype and energetic.

-The characters each had their own tragic backstory of sorts, as you do in a high school fighting drama. I do feel like I wanted a little more from some of them. Like what the fuck was up with Lee Joon and Anti? (I guess Anti's just a jerk now and maybe that's realistic but seriously!) And why can't we get more wholesome family scenes with Lee Ji-woo and Lee Hyun-woo? Maybe if there's a second season.

-I do NOT care about Pi Han-wool, I'm sorry. I know he's this big mastermind for why the school is full of delinquency and crime but honestly I would have preferred if it just naturally was a mess like that rather than one big bad engineering everything. And as a character, he doesn't have a ton of depth and only gets one real fight scene. So, I just... don't care about him. (And Ga-min has cooler fight scenes than that finale, for that matter.)

-As the show goes on, it gets a bit more focused on action and plot and less on humor, which is kind of a loss. I would guess this is also the case in the webtoon it's based on; action shows and webtoons both have this tendency. At least it keeps its snark and a sense of timing, even if by the end it tends to be more dramatic timing than comedic.

-I love Ga-min just making "please study with me" puppy eyes at people, especially when he's wearing glasses. HE'S SO POWERFUL.

-I feel like you expect Ga-min to be more pacifist early on bc of his love for studying, but actually, once you let him get into one good fight, he's really gung-ho about fighting from then on! He just needs a good reason. But as long as you touch his berserk button of "someone who likes to study is being bothered", it is pretty easy to goad him. The thing is, it really does have to be about studying for him. He doesn't really swoop in on random fights all around the school. But if he sees that someone has FLASH CARDS in their pocket and later finds out that they're in trouble with a gang, he will go and fight the whole gang for the sake of those flash cards. BECAUSE THEY SHOW THAT PERSON WANTS TO STUDY.

-I'm not sure how I'd rate this show in terms of whump. People are definitely getting beat up and bloody. But we're going by shonen manga rules here, where you can get beaten within an inch of your life and still be back at school the next day with mild bruising. LEE JOON GOT STABBED NEAR HIS FUCKING HEART. AND HE WALKS IT OFF. WHAT. It also feels fairly inconsistent whether you get the sense that people are actually hurt by getting punched etc or if they're just going to have a harder time winning the ensuing fight. There are some decent whumpy scenes, though, if you're fine with the fact that everyone gets beat up constantly and none of this will have lasting consequences.

Overall, this is the most fun I've had with an action focused kdrama since Bloodhounds! I'd definitely recommend :D

What is the Easter Art Special? It's a surprise for my 5 mutuals! Each part is a picture of one of my OCs and one of my mutual's OCs. If you notice differences in style and quality, that's not on purpose, my art is just a bit inconsistent. The order of the parts is the same order of us becoming mutuals (so part 3 is my third mutual). This is one of 3 parts that are set in the Magikey AU.

Archenemy Info (yapping)

His activities in the AU

A unusually strong humanoid enemy, who works together with weaker enemies, he is coordinating their pursuit of negative emotions and their attacks on Magikey users. The Archenemy can unite weaker enemies to work together in a team and give them strategic advice for the fight. His goal beyond the pursuit of negative energy is to lessen the amount of Magikey users, as they always get in his way with their rightiousness and to steal these valuable magikeys for himself. He already has acquired one, but hasn't figured out how to unlock it, yet. (Fun fact: while he claims to have stolen it like a proper villain, he has actually bought it from a Magikey user who was fed up with the job.)

He is that weaker villain, who never really suceeds and shows up and tries again and again. Since he is very strong, quick, clever and hard to hit and catch thanks to his fluid shapeshifter physique and his generally elusive approach to fights, no one managed to get rid of him. While his weaker underlings often get destroyed, he always manages to slip away. Qix Trix has to fight him and his weaker enemy goons especially often, because they often operate in the same part of the city. The Archenemy tends to avoid the stronger Magikey user and targets weaker ones.

Origin

Quartz explained in a post, how enemies come into existence:

Enemies are goopy ink beings that are born from negative and intense places like funerals or stuff like that. Just places where a lot of negative energy/emotions are produced. There are some instances where a lot of negative energy from one singular person can produce them. These enemies can take any shape and form. There are also different levels to them. They can range to small goopy monsters to full fledged humanoid people who can speak and comprehend. Usually, the small goopy monsters are most common and the humanoid ones only form if the negative energy has been there for an extremely extended period. These enemies have their own state of mind and become completely separate from the person who produced them.

It just figures that an enemy - and it's this enemy here - has formed near Azul during his difficult childhood. And Azul was lonely enough to keep the creature around to play with it, instead of destroying it while it was still tiny and weak. The enemy retained this harmless appearance while it grew stronger, playing the part of a weird, but domesticated pet. It got a bit exposed to the power of friendship and being liked, which must be like poison directed at a being that thrives on negative emotions, but after some ailing it developed a tolerance and... mutated. During its formative years of developing a personality, the creature developed something, it should not have: own emotions, albeit they were weak.

After some years, the enemy took a humaniod mer form that was a goopy black copy of its host and started talking. While it (or rather, from then on: he) did this to strenghten their bond, feeling threatened by Azul becoming closer with Jade and Floyd, the result was the opposite. It was in this moment that Azul realised that he had created a monster. The enemy didn't attack him and tried to stay friends, even though he was hungry for negative energy in a time when Azul was doing better. While Azul was working to get a good reputation and convincing himself that he was benevolent and rightious, the enemy got his fix of negative energy by targeting and bullying children. It was obvious to Azul that he couldn't associate with such an evil being, so he led him into a trap to kill him.

It didn't work. The enemy was too strong. Overwhelmed and confused by experiencing negative emotions himself upon this betrayal, the enemy fled. He stopped using the name that Azul had given him, and began his "career" as "The Archenemy". His appearance remains based on Azul, but nowadays he has distinguishing features, most notable the longer hair and that the Archenemy chooses to have a fuller figure (for sentimental reasons, but that's a secret).

The shared past between a Magikey User and the Archenemy is mostly unknown, as neither of them talk about it.

The Archenemy has no intention to come after Azul. He expects that he will get corrupted by his negative energy eventually, without anyone consuming it away. Azul would need him, but the Archenemy can do without him.

A/N: Helloo yes i know it's been a while since i've updated something but life has taken a turn so, i had this idea while on the way home from work. So sit back relax and enjoy. Y/F/F means your favorite flower. these might also be two chapters a day type of story

Summary: Y/N has a past she's never told anyone about, she was involved in some heavy things when she lived in England with her Aunt and Uncle. Things she thought were murdered along with her best friend, things she thought went missing with her boyfriend. Things that followed her to Quantico, Virginia.

Y/N's POV:

Being an FBI agent wasn't easy, but having no significant other outside the job made it so much better. You never have to worry about missing date nights, but after a while it gets lonely. But as I said this business isn't easy, I'd rather be alone than have to curse someone to live with my inconsistent schedule. Emily, JJ, and Penelope on the other hand do not like the idea that I like being single.

"Come one Y/N, you never want to go out with us." I nod keeping my focus on my computer, "There's a reason for that Penny, you all know I hate parties." JJ cuts in before Penny can respond. "But it's not a party, its a club. There's a difference." I look up from my computer to give her a sarcastic smile, "Oh really? I didn't know that." Emily cackles at my sarcasm, "Y/N just come with us, please?" I sigh.

Looking back at my computer in defeat, "Fine, I'll go out with you guys tonight." Penny squeals in excitement and happiness which catches the attention of Spencer, Morgan and Rossi as they walk into the Bull Pen, "What's got you so excited Mama?" Derek asks, she rushes over to him and hugs him. "Y/N said she'll go out with us tonight." He looks around her at me surprised, "Really?" I rolled my eyes and turned back towards my computer.

"Oh there's no need to get so hostile Y/N/N, you're gonna have so much fun tonight." I sighed, "Now you of all people know I hate parties Derek." He smirks and walks past me, "Whatever you say, Katara." I sigh and hang my head. "I thought I asked you to stop calling me that Morgan. That only happened once." He laughed loudly at that. "What only happened once?" Spencer asks, just as confused and the others. "When we were younger Y/N binged Avatar The Last Airbender and thought she was a water bender, and the next time we went to the pool she thought she could control the water, so she jumped into the deep end knowing she couldn't swim and I had to save her from drowning." Emily burst out laughing and I turned away in shame. "And to remind me of the most embarrassing moment in my life, my parents and siblings decided to nickname me Katara." Emily couldn't stop laughing while the others had slight smiles and smirks, I cracked a smile and looked at the clock. "Alright it's time for me to head home since I've been peer pressured into leaving the comfort of my home tonight." Penny rushes over to me. "Wait we're coming with you because we have to make sure you have the proper attire for the club tonight." I sigh and nod as Penny runs back to her office to grab her stuff. Emily and JJ grab their belongings off their desk and we walk to the elevator and wait for Penelope to return from her office. When she gets back we get into the elevator and down to the garage. JJ and Emily get into their cars and Penny and I get into mine and we drive to my apartment. ________________________________________

Time Skip to arriving at your apartment building

________________________________________ When we arrive I can see the shock on Penny's face, "Woah I completely forgot how fancy this place is. You're so lucky to have rich family." JJ and Emily join you both at the entrance and we're greeted by the doorman George. "Miss Y/L/N good afternoon." I smile at him "Good afternoon George." "Would you like me to grab Benny, Alex and Drew to drive you and your friends cars to the garage?" I shook my head. "Not at the moment George we're only going to be here for a few hours but thanks for asking." He nods and holds the door open, "Well just give us a call if you change your mind Miss Y/L/N." I smile and walk through the door, "You know I will George." Emily and JJ look shocked by my apartments fanciness. "Y/N you have door holders and chauffeur's. Next you're gonna tell me that there's a dining lounge on the roof." I laugh. "Of course not." I turned towards the elevator, "It's on the 10th floor." I smirk knowing her jaw is on the floor and walk towards the elevator and they follow. I press the number for my floor and just listen to the sounds of the elevator. When the doors open we walk down the hall until we reach my front door. I stop in my dead tracks, in front of my door is a bouquet of Y/F/F, with a note in blue ink that reads. "See you soon."

There's only one person in this world who knows what my favorite flower is and he's dead, right?

Honestly ricks new book has just inspired me to reread wcwsthwas again.

I'm convinced Rick doesn't remember who his characters are anymore.

ill be the first to admit my characters can also be ooc! i think ive also fallen into the 'annabeth as a mom friend' trap (though piper is usually annabeth's mom in my fic) and i do think i have a lot of work to do keeping my characterizations consistent.

but heres the crux of my problem, right: this isnt my job. im a girl in my twenties who works full time and writes for fun. my ao3 is my hobby, and the characters i write are not canon. thats why it KILLS ME that rick writes with such a loose pen. in this new book, ive seen at least 5 inconsistencies, and thats IGNORING the timeline one (because why are people acting like leo is alive???). he has changed....just core things about characters. like grover the vegetarian eating a bacon sandwich and clovis now being morpehus' son. lack of attention to the little details, imo, just shows a lack of care. and as @glove23 pointed out, it shows that he really doeant respect his readers. he's acting like we're idiots, like we arent going to notice the changes. and, at the risk of aounding like a scooby doo villain, HES GETTING AWAY WITH IT TOO!! twitter laps up everything he does. it infuriates me to a whole other level.

this man is retconning shit left and right, tweaking stories previous to suit whatever new one he's writiig at the moment, and it just comes off as disrespectful and sloppy. fic writers are doing better than him at just about everything at this point. im not even talking about ME. there are heaps of really incredible pjo authors who seem to understand and respect the source material far more than rick seems to these days. and thats a goddamn shame.

ive read snippets of the book - some parts are okay and some are passable but most feel...weird. i dont know if its just me, but even the percabeth felt off. i hate how percy calls himself dumb in, like, every second sentence. when did that become a thing? and WHY? i wouldnt be surprised if this was ghostwritten. tbh, i hope it is. like you said, it feels like rick doesnt know how to write his characters anymore :/ sucks but i feel like i need to add a disclaimer to every fic now: this author has read only the original pjo and hoo books and all characters are written based on the ones of those series.
