osamu god of aftercare miya who doesn’t know what leaving is. in gray sweats, shirtless, a ‘kiss the cook’ apron on while he’s making you breakfast the morning after? you don’t really want him to leave anyway.

butter, pancakes, and some secret third thing, pulls you from the haze of sleep before you even open your eyes. the sheets beside you are empty but still warm, proof that osamu hasn’t been up for long.

when you stir, stretching lazily, the first thing you see is him: standing by the stove in nothing but his sweatpants and an apron that hangs loose around his bare chest. he rolls his shoulders back, muscles bunching, the former act to perfectly flipping a sunnyside egg — yolk intact.

“you’re starin’,” he drawls, not looking away from the pan. who wouldn’t be? sleep is evident in his hair, apron dusted lightly with flour, and there’s a faint pink mark on his shoulder turning purple, one you don’t remember leaving but feel smug about anyway.

“you’re in my apartment, my kitchen, making me breakfast,” you manage to carry the tone through a mumble, “I think I’m allowed to look.”

he huffs out a laugh, setting a fresh pancake onto the growing stack on the counter. “fair enough.”

“planning on leaving anytime soon?” you ask, tucking your hair behind your ear and drizzling syrup over your portion. he stares a moment, eyes soft and crinkling at the ends, grin tugging at the corner of his mouth.

“I ain’t leavin’ until you're full.”

To me, loose coil curly hair dazai is canon..... I see him in fanart with stright hair sometimes and it throws me off so bad.... Like where is the coils? Wheres the framed hair? The curly spiky jellyfish bottom?

For me Beast is interesting because it's not really 'manipulated' in a common way, it's just that the events in the universe happened differently because of Dazai's actions. The characters like Akutagawa and Odasaku were/are PM members in the main universe because Dazai invited them. In Beast, this doesn't happen and Odasaku just naturally becomes an Agency members bc Dazai and he never even meet so Dazai doesnt invent him to the PM. Dazai doesnt invite Akutagawa to the PM and Akutagawa just finds his way to Odasaki and becomes and Agency member. It is kinda scary how Dazai basically is the key factor shaping the lives of the characters in both universes.

And for Atsushi is the same, main Dazai took him to the Agency because main Dazai was an Agency member at the time he met Atsushi. In Beast he never left the PM, and when he didn't choose Akutagawa as his right hand man, Atsushi had to fulfill main!Akutagawa's role.

So things aren't just... manipulation. It's basically Dazai changing his decisions

Yeah! It's both a reflection on how deeply interconnected everyone is, and on how Dazai is a core element of both universes, someone who shapes the fate of everyone who interacts with him. It's also remarkable how just by making tiny different choices Dazai was able to plasmate the world exactly how he wanted to (that is, a safe place for Oda); that's something only Dazai could be able to do!

I wonder what it must have been like for Dazai and Chuuya, after all those years apart.

Because they are Dazai and Chuuya, Soukoku, two bodies harboring one soul and yet they both must have realized that after four years apart when they look at the person who understands them better than anyone else in the world, they are looking at a stranger.

How must it have felt to realize that the person who was molded and raised to be your other half no longer fits in the space that was carved out specifically for them and nobody else?

It probably stings. To realize that someone else was given the opportunity to round down those dangerously sharp edges into something warmer and softer and better (that person was not you. Never you. Because you are only perfect when you are angry and sharp and broken together. Because they trusted you enough to know them but not enough to save them)

It probably hurts to see your other half flourishing. To see them doing better than they ever have before and it’s specifically because you weren’t there. (They are better off without you. Because you left. Because you didn’t trust them enough. Because you didn’t give them a chance to be better with you)

It must be frightening to realize that the one thing that you thought would never change morphed into something you no longer recognize when you weren’t looking.

It must be frustrating to realize that everything is the same as it always was and yet will never be the same as it ever was.

It must be difficult to have felt like you moved on only to realize you’re still stuck with one foot in the past.

The person before you is someone you trust with your mind, body, and soul and yet they are a stranger to you.

The person before you acts in all the ways you expect them too right up until the moment they don’t and then suddenly you are left feeling lost.

They are Soukoku and they are partners but they do not know each other. They have spent more time apart than they ever did together. They are Dazai and Chuuya but neither knows what that means anymore.

(But in the end it doesn’t matter because they are Dazai and Chuuya and that is all they ever needed. They may not know each other but they can learn. And now? Now that they are no longer trapped by circumstance? No longer forced to carve out pieces of themselves to fit another? Now that that are both here and they are trying? Now that they are choosing to be partners despite having to relearn everything about each other?

Now they have become something more and better than anyone ever would have thought possible)

Osamu takes the last spoonful of rice and makes a fuji-shaped mound with his fingertips, pushing the finishing piece into the top behind his palm. He places this last, behind the row of onigiri you’re carefully wrapping up, and moves out of your way.

You pick up the last onigiri and let out a little noise, noticing the tiny mt. fuji with… was that a ring stuck into it?

You whip around, looking for Osamu. He’s already down on one knee.
