Student file: "Phobos"

Phobos is one of the more troubling students at Night Raven College. He and his "cousin" continue to cause a ruckus, scare first years and ever since they've shown up an influx of scams have arrived alongside them. Despite this, neither of the two can get into trouble. I inquire you to read further for an explanation.
General information:
Age: 17
Pronouns: He/They
Class: 2-C
Voice Claim: Tanaka Ryuunosuke from Haikyuu (Yu Hayashi)
Club: Track and Field
Favourite subject: Flight lessons
Homeland: The kingdom of Heroes
Species: Presumably half-fae half-human
Height: 155cm
Birthday: 3rd of December
Dominant hand: Ambidextrous
Likes: Cursed objects, races, shoes, spicy food, hoodies, magenta.
Dislikes: Expensive stuff, being wrong, Riddle, Kalim, Leona, the colour yellow.
Personality:
Phobos is a very abrasive person. He's loud, brash and seems to enjoy terrorising first years and students they're not scared off. They do, however, walk the fine line of being cocky and being a coward. He runs at any sign of danger and sometimes he even hides behind Idia. Speaking of Idia, Phobos and Pavor seem to view him as above them and someone to listen too. They both seem afraid of repercussions if they go against him but have no issue talking back to teachers.
Behind his bravado Phobos seems rather insecure and quiet. He seems to live in a world of denial and is quick to use it if he feels like things are going wrong. They'd rather have others believe they mess up on purpose then let them find out he can be wrong. He's also very stingy with money, likely a result of their childhood. They won't tolerate any rumours being spread about him and deals with them as quick as possible.
If left to his own devices Phobos surprisingly enough, will try to do homework first and then tune in on more interesting things like watching a race. Occasionally he'll do both at the same time. He never asks for help or takes deals unless they're the one making them. Despite this, Phobos is drawn to darker more scary things in life, he's often seen taking naps near cursed objects.
Appearance:
Phobos has dark, kind of dusty magenta coloured hair with even darker horns. His hair reaches his chin and he always looks like he just brushes it out of his face and lets the wind do the rest. His eyes are yellow, which contrasts with the dark purple eyeshadow he wears. He also has sharp teeth.
His skin is slightly tan from the sun but compared to most people in Ignihyde he looks like he's been sunburnt. He's chubbier then his counterpart, he also has more scars though they're not very visible under his clothes. Scratches on his legs and elbows, nicks on his hands, some mildly concerning scars on his back. They're all old. The only really visible scar is on his tail, right before the fork there's a scar that he wears with pride. They won't tell you where it's from but it sure has their ego boosting.
Keep in mind:
Unique Magic: We are [blank]. Phobos Unique Magic is simple, but powerful. He can transform into near any living creature, provided he has seen it before. As well as other people, though this takes more energy and blot and is harder to do. However, he and Pavor have found a loophole and will often combine their UM's to disguise Phobos more effortlessly.
○ Phobos is dyslexic and near sighted but seems unaware of this fact
○ Phobos is autistic and has anger issues
○ Phobos has a tendency to mess up in classes on purpose. It is to be noted that some of these purposeful screw ups might not be on purpose but rather that they are embarrassed about failure and lack of knowledge.
Family:
Unknown parents, they grew up in Philocletes Grove Orphanage in The Kingdom of Heroes before running away. Records describe him as unsociable, hard to work with and lacking friends.
Pavor: Despite the two not being related in any way, the boys have taken a liking to each other and proudly display their familial relationship for everyone to hear. Apparently, saying they were brothers was too far-fetched, so they went with cousins. They can be antagonistic to eschother, egging each other on or selling the other out when they get caught, but Phobos is wildly protective of Pavor and always quick to shut down the others panicked train of thoughts.
Backstory:
Phobos is a street rat orphan. He and Pavor met in an orphanage, which they both ran away from. So far, the reasoning is unknown, but we can assume it has to do with the horns. Both boys took to trickery and thievery to stay alive and seem to hide behind the most powerful person they deem "safe." STYX sponsors the boys, as long as they keep an eye on the blot culmination that seems almost abnormally high around this school. In other words, the boys are financially dependent on STYX. Their stay at the school is a bribe, and it is important to note that Housewarden Shroud is kept unaware. STYX has noted that both Pavor and Phobos are code names but the boys were more then happy to give up their old ones.
Extra:
○ Phobos really likes watching any type of racing
○ They're rather insecure about how they can't seem to look "fancy" no matter how hard he tries so he forgoes collared shirts for hoodies
○ They're Bisexual, not that dating is in any way on his mind right now
○ Phobos takes a lot of odd jobs and is the main source of scams created by him and Pavor, despite the money and funding given by STYX neither boy trusts it and they seem to believe that the moment they leave NRC they'll be back on the streets with nothing.

A LOOK INSIDE THE BISHOP FAMILY LINE, the mortal & the divine:
Arsema Thomas is Aphrodite Alan Ritchson is Ares Tony Thornburg is Phobos & Deimos
Tamlyn Tomita is Catherine Bishop, née Ono Mark Ruffalo is Warren Bishop
Lyrica Okano is Mary Ann Bishop Havana Rose Liu is @littledecth

ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ ⚲ Caverna de Phobos e Deimos, 2014.

It’s not that adults don’t use names, but titles save a lot of explaining in the ‘who the fuck are you and what the fuck are you doing?’ area. Part nick-name, part descriptor, part curse and part superstition about the power of a true name. On the other hand, titles are a bit of a mouthful when you are bent over a pail, so there are pros and cons here. “Title’s good enough.” “Navigator Darksight.”
Finally, Dualscar says, almost nonchalantly: “So, what’s your name? I’ve never asked.” “Marten. The name’s Marten.”
Marten "Navigator Darksight" Deimos is named Marten not after the slinky predator, but after the planet Mars. Marten as in martial. Deimos as in one of the moons of Mars.
Deimos and Phobos are the sons of the Greek god of war Ares (of which Mars is the Roman counterpart), the embodiment of terror and panic respectively.
Most things pertaining to Darksight | Marten directly have names pertaining to fear or alluding to them as the other half of a pair. Notably:
Pallor, the throne-moon - Pallor is the twin-companion of Pavor, the companion of Roman god Mars, Pallor being counterpart to Deimos and Pavor to Phobos
Erebus, HCSS - while bearing the name of the Greek god of darkness, this one actually alludes to Earthly HMS Erebus and HMS Terror of the lost Franklin's expedition.
and of course we can't forget that Horrorterrors played and play a notable part in his life.
while not mentioned in the story, his personal fleet consists of nine ships, three of the most prominent are named Fright, Flight and Frost, which refers to the three instinctive stress/defense responses (fight, flee and freeze).
In numerology, the number associated with Mars is 9. That is also the recurring number with Darksight, most notably his self-chosen title consisting of 2 times 9 letters.

not being given the attention that he deserved, or at least desired, was really starting to rub pavor the wrong way. plus nate saying that he already knew what was wrong? he really had to be knocked off of his dead horse and the phobos heir didn't care if he had to be the one to do it. "yeah sure, you just know it all don't you?" of course he was going to be testing the limits. he sat down criss cross apple sauce right across from nate, maybe a little too close to comfort for either of them. "no front to put up when you're always ready. stay ready don't be caught off guard. especially by corpse fuckers." he didn't care if no one spread that rumor around, he was going to roll with it. "i'm not stupid." yes, yes he was.
he didn't look up from his work, indeed going through all the motions with an appropriate amount of detail, but they were rote tasks he'd been doing for years, so nate could do so while also having all his attention trained on the space between them. he'd have time to get active if the crazy breached it. "think we all know what's wrong wit it already." it was pretty clearly implied in the rules of society, which didn't require a point of view on the topic to be insulting, he was making excuses; nate didn't trust it at all and his face remained the same now as he continued on to the chrome of the frame. "i reckon it was in case you were puttin up a front. could be you're stupid instead. i guess we'll find out." his tone was again, the same easy drawl, not betraying the sharp focus still protecting his personal space.

Muse Preview- Phobos

Love did not cast out fear but was its mother. Fear casts its long shadow, towering over life but he is not unreasonable. His favor can be given or even won in confronting him and not averting one’s gaze.
He was apart of his father, War’s, retinue but he also kept company with all-mighty Zeus, grey-eyed Athene and wild Dionysos. Each have left their mark and so fear is not simple. He never was.

Roman gods are not Greek gods: Mars
MARS
To start this series, I think the best deity to exemplify the difference between Greek and Roman gods is Mars, the Roman equivalent of Ares.
Everybody knows Ares. The cruel and bloodthirsty god of war, a deity who enjoys bloodbaths and massacres, the twin brother of strife and discord, the father of terror and panic, an embodiment of brutality and violence existing to oppose the most rational, civilized, intelligent and honorable form of war practiced by Athena, deity of strategy, peace and wisdom.
And yet, when you look at Mars, over in Rome… While he is indeed a god of war, like Ares, he has absolutely none of the “dark” or “ugly” sides of Ares. He isn’t a brute, he isn’t mindless, he isn’t a god of carnage feared by all. He isn’t a god of destruction. In fact, he is the sole embodiment of the “good war”. All of Athena’s symbolism as the “goddess of the right way to wage war” can be found in Mars, and all of Ares’ symbolism as the “god of the wrong way to wage war” is thrown out of the window, nowhere to be seen. The reason why is in my general introduction: the Romans were soldiers at heart. Roman culture was a military culture. Waging war and sending legions to conquer their neighbors was how Rome asserted itself as a great power, how the city-state grew into an empire, how the Romans built themselves as people. The army was the main way to maintain order and control in the various provinces of the Empire ; being a soldier was one of the most common careers of a Roman, and the military hierarchy was just a common way of climbing the social ladder ; a part of the nobility of Rome was of military origins. War was a big, big thing for Ancient Rome – and as a result they did not had any “negative” view of war (unlike the Greeks who constantly lived in the fear of both barbarian invasions and civil war among themselves). For them, a god of war would be the god that helped their culture affirm itself, that helped their empire grow, that was present in their everyday life, that maintained order in their lands and that helped structure their very society. And this is why Mars is a “good” god of war, unlike Ares.
To illustrate this, the cult of Mars was heavily centered around shields – showing that he embodied a war and a military supposed to protect as much as it should attack. He was a god that generals prayed to before going on any military campaign, offerings were given to him before any battle, and if the Romans were victorious it was him they thanked. In fact, Mars was often depicted in the company of personifications of victory, such as Victoria or Vitula. Yes, he was also escorted by deities that inflicted terror on his enemies, similar to the Greek Phobos and Deimos (here Pavor and Pallor), but he also counted among his companion allegories such as Honor or Virtus – the very concept of honor and courage, for Mars was a god of bravery and the keeper of the moral code of warriors. His war was one of virtue and discipline, not of chaos and wickedness.
But this is all just one of the two main aspects of Mars – the other being… flowers. Yep. A flower god. Now we’re really not in Kansas anymore – you imagine Ares as a god of flowers? As I said in my general introduction, the Romans were primarily “farmer-soldiers”, with a very… rustic and agricultural pantheon before the massive Hellenization. And Mars is the “perfect” Roman god because he literally has both sides: a god of war and a god of plants. In his “primitive”, more Latin incarnation, Mars started out as a protector of vegetation and a deity making sure that nature flourished – his festivals were during the third month of the year, the month of March (named after him) and coincided with the opening of the tree-buds and the apparition of the first flowers, making him a god of spring.
While he lost most of his agricultural functions to Ceres and Liber Pater as Rome became a much more military nation, he still kept several traits of his primal characterization – for example his old epithet “Gradivus”, originally tied to “grandiri” (to grow, to become tall) was reinterpreted as tied to “gradi, gradus” (to march, to step) and from a god helping plants grow he became the god of the marching soldiers, aka infantrymen – it was on Mars Gradivus that generals and soldiers swore an oath to be valorous in battle. There is also how soldier’s prayers for Mars to protect their weapons and blade from “rust” originated as prayers by farmers to have their wheat protected from another type of “rust”, a special type of wheat fungus. The fact he was celebrated in spring became more than just a celebration of him “waking up” nature and giving back life to strength and plants – he was also perceived as “waking up” bravery and courage in men’s hearts. Because, with the end of winter, battles and military operations could start again (they were usually “paused” during the winter). And thus “war and prosperity” became seen by the Romans as just two sides of the same coin, and spring as the season of both flowers and soldiers. Mars was perceived as the god of “virility”, and for the Romans virility was as much a social virtue AND the very concept of life force – virility was the way a soldier or general had to be, but it was also virility that helped crops grow and that helped create plants.
A last interesting way the two sides of Mars were united is through his spear. Mars’ iconic weapon was his spear (the two items of his military cult were the shield and the spear) – and often said spear was depicted as wrapped in laurel garlands. While originally a symbol reflecting his role as a vegetation god, the idea of garlands of leaves and flowers became associated with victory in battle and peace after war – which is why for example a crown of laurel became a symbol of a champion, winner or conquerer in Rome.
Other important facts about Mars:
# Mars had a very important role in Roman history, and was thus seen as one of the “ancestor” gods of the Roman civilization. He was said to have been the father of Romulus and Remus, the brothers who actually built the city of Rome ; and he helped the second legendary king of Rome, Numa Pompilius, by offering him a magical shield that was tied to Rome’s fate and would help protect the city as long as it stayed undamaged. This important role led to him being actually called “father” in religion: Mars Pater, Father Mars (which is a name also present in earlier incarnation of the god as “Marspiter” or “Maspiter”).
# In fact, Mars was one of the most prominent and important Roman gods, with temples present everywhere. It is said that he was one of the gods of the “archaic triad” (the triad of main gods of early Roman religion), alongside Jupiter (imagine: Mars was equal to Jupiter!) and a purely Roman deity known as “Quirinus”. What is slightly confusing however is that while sometimes Quirinus and Mars are treated as separate, other times they are treated as one of the same: “Mars Quirinus” was one of the aspects of Mars, as the god of the “quirites” (citizens of Rome), the protector of Rome’s civilians, as well as the keeper of treaties and oaths ensuring peace as a whole.
# Ovid actually gave Mars a birth legend that was the one of Hephaistos in the Hesiodic tradition: Juno/Hera, jealous of seeing Jupiter/Zeus giving birth to a child on his own (Minerva/Athena), decided in retaliation to also give birth to a child on her own. But unlike Hesiod’s Theogony where Hera worked on her own and the result was an imperfect, deformed baby ; in Ovid’s tales, Juno asked for the help of the goddess Flora, who offered her a magical flower that impregnated the goddess and led to the birth of Mars. (This legend furthers highlights the “vegetation” aspect of Mars).
# While March became the “third month” of the Roman calendar, with the month of January (named after the god Janus) marking the new year ; originally March was the first month of the early Roman calendar, and on the first day of this month (so the first day of the year) was celebrated the Matronalia, a festival of mother and married women centered around Juno. It was also thought to be the day Juno gave birth to Mars. Thus, the birth of Mars, god of vegetation, from the mother-goddess, by a magical flower, was the original opening of the Roman year – a year which, as you can see, in the agricultural lifestyle of early Romans was entirely centered around nature, beginning with the rebirth of vegetation and ending with the “death” of plants in winter.
# While Ares’ sacred animals reflected his nastier side (the destructive boar blinded by rage, the corpse-eating vulture), Mars’ sacred animals were the woodpecker, the bear and the wolf. The latter was very important – a she-wolf nursed Romulus and Remus, Rome’s founders, as babes, and thus the wolf became the symbol of the “nurse and nurturer” of Rome, it became the animal of the defense of Rome, and the very representation of Rome itself.
# Ares had a female divine companion, which was a purely Roman goddess and the main “warrior goddess” instead of Athena/Minerva – it was Bellona, goddess of war, sometimes said to be the sister, daughter or wife of Mars. But while she was the main war goddess of the Roman pantheon, she was not the equivalent of Athena at all – in fact, in a true ironic twist, Bellona was said to be a more brutal and savage deity than Mars, asking for mutilation and blood in her sacrifices, and being escorted by the Roman version of Eris (Discordia) and by the Furies (Roman Erynies). So overall, Bellona was more of a “true” equivalent of Ares, while Mars is more of an equivalent of Athena… Mars also had another consort-goddess which was sometimes equated with Bellona: Nerio, the personification of “valor” – and just like Mars, she had a dual nature as both embodying a social virtue, a form of “majestic power” (valor as we understand it today), and a manifestation of the vital force and life-power.
# As you can deduce from above – the whole thing of Mars and Venus being in love actually did not exist until the Hellenization of the Roman religion. It was then that the love story of Ares and Aphrodite was brought over, and forced upon the Roman gods, even though Mars and Venus had nothing to do together prior to that. However, while the Romans quickly adopted the Mars and Venus love, they kind of ditched a very important aspect of the Greek story: the adultery. It was present in the first manifestations of the Greek tale in Rome, but the Romans did not like to speak of such vile or unpleasant things like adultery (unlike rape for example, which Romans ADORED), and so it did not stick. This tale fascinated the poets, the artists, the philosophers, precisely because they adored the beauty and idea of Love and War being united as a couple, and so they refuse to have it be presented in a negative light like the Greek did. Ares and Aphrodite’s relationship wasn’t a love story, but an infidelity story almost turning into a grotesque farce – it was the Romans who romanticized and embellished Mars and Venus’ relationship into a beautiful love story, to the point that the two deities were implied or considered to be married to each other, and were seen as the ideal model for married couples. It helped that both were consider the “parent gods” of Rome, Mars as the “father” through Romulus/Remus, Venus as the “mother” through Aeneas. An interesting thing concerning the Mars-Venus relationship: in Roman depictions of the relationship, Venus is always presented in a dominating or leading position, while Mars is often shown in a submissive, relaxed, rested way, often disrobed, disarmed, if not outright nude or sleeping. As I said, the Mars-Venus relationship was heavily perceived through poetic and philosophical lenses, and as a result these depictions wanted to insist on how Love actually brings calm, peace and rest in War, allowing War to leave its weapons and abandon itself to pleasures and quietness.

Statue Immortal, my friend!
That one is inspired by this comic! It focuses on Rod and Phobos... but they have different names for. A reason :) It's gonna be a fic that focuses on grief, acceptance of death, and moving on... as well as a secret fourth thing.
Here's a snippet!
Lethe = Rod
Pavor = Phobos (she/he)
Adam = Clay
"Easy now- that's right, nice and gentle..." Carefully, a statue is placed down beneath the shelter of a tree, the forest ground littered with changing leaves as a pair of brothers huff and wipe sweat off their brows. "...Nice view, ain't it?" The taller one speaks again, looking not at his brother, but up at the statue of a woman with her hand stretched out protectively.
She stares off into the distance, a resigned but resolute glare in her stony eyes as he's kept immortalized in his last moments. The taller brother stares up at her, his smile wavering before he looks away.
"...Don't you worry none. I'll take care of ya until this spell wears off. Promise."
"Lethe..." His older brother speaks up, concern furrowing his brow as he peers at Lethe. "There ain't no guarantee he'll... come back."
"Guaranteed or not, I'll wait for her." Lethe stares down at the ground as he clenches his fist. "He protected us. Gave his life to make sure we'd- we'd have a fighting chance." He looks back up at the statue, his eyes watering at the sight of her. "...It's the least I can do. We were gonna make a life together, after all."
"I know, li'l gem. I know." They both stand in silence, gazing out past the forest as the river bubbles beside them. Another minute goes by before Lethe speaks up.
"I'll make a home by the lake. Ain't too far from here after all and... I'll be able to take care of her while I wait."
"Ya sure 'bout this?" His brother, though his tone gruff and stern, continues on with clear worry in his voice. "I don't like the idea of you living on your own like this, far from the nearest town."
"Ain't but a day or two's ride away," Lethe says jovially as his brother grumbles. "...But I promise I'll be okay, Adam. I'll come visit when I can. Heck, you can come visit too. Ain't gonna stop ya from doing surprise visits, that much I know."
Adam harrumphs in response, arms crossed as the brim of his hat slips over his eyes. "I'll hold ya to it. Do ya need help building that house of yours?"
"Well..."
"I figured as much."

Daenerys and Jon | Venus and Mars
Venus, the goddess of: Love. Fertility. Prosperity. Victory. Desire. Beauty.
Epithets: The Mother. The Victorious. The Freedwoman. The Lucky. The Purifier. The Changer of Hearts.
Venusian deities include: Aphrodite, Inanna, Ishtar, Astarte, Astoreth, Asherah
In ancient Babylonia, Venus was known as the ‘divine lady’ and the ‘illumination of heaven’. As the evening star, Venus appears after sunset in the night sky, disappearing for several days before re-emerging as a morning star on the sun's opposite side. The unique path of Venus through the sky has given rise to many prominent myths spanning cultures throughout history. The morning aspect of Venus was designated ‘Lucifer’* by the ancient Romans, literally translating to 'Light-Bringer', a figure presented in poetry as the herald of dawn. Venus has associations with sweet-smelling flowers such as roses and myrtle. The circle-and-cross symbol for Venus, like the Ankh, may represent life or sexual reproduction, and denotes the female sex.
*While the latin word for morning star, Lucifer, has since been applied to the allegorical fall of Satan, it's important to note that another allegorical Venusian figure, Jesus Christ, is also referred to as ‘the bright morning star’ and ‘tu verus mundi lucifer’, or, ‘the true light-bringer of the world’.
Mars, the god of: War. Spring. Virility. Valor. Fertility. Agriculture.
Epithets: The Father. The Protector. The Avenger. The Venerable. The Healer. The Peacekeeper.
Martian deities include: Ares, Nergal, Laran, Maris, Lenus, Mangala
In ancient Mesopotamia, Mars was seen as a ‘star of judgment’ and the ‘fate of the dead’. In Roman art and literature, the wolf appears as a sacred animal or symbol of Mars. In one depiction of Mars on the Altar of Peace, he can be seen alongside a wolf, holding a spear wreathed with a garland of laurel, symbolizing peace gained through martial victory. Often, Mars is depicted as nude, representing his fearlessness in battle. Similar to Venus, Mars takes a notable retrograde path through the night sky—appearing to move backward and further east each night before continuing west. The symbol of Mars depicts a sword and shield, used to denote the male sex, as well as the element of iron.

(Venus and Mars by Geraldine Arata)
While Venus represents the watery female essence, and her male counterpart, Mars, represents the fiery male essence, attributes of both deities can be found in Daenerys and Jon alike—from the warlike aspects of Mars to the path Venus takes through the sky and its association with ‘lightbringing’.
The journey that Daenerys takes seems to correspond with the planet's movements through the heavens:
“To go north, you must journey south, to reach the west you must go east. To go forward you must go back and to touch the light you must pass beneath the shadow.”
Venus rises first in the summer sky as the evening star, plunging into the darkness during winter to rise again on the sun’s opposite side as the morning star to herald the sun.
Jon is, likewise, experiencing the path of the planet Venus in an allegorical sense—descending to the underworld only to rise again through resurrection.
Similarly, when it comes to Azor Ahai, we see Daenerys filling the prophecy literally:
“When the red star bleeds and the darkness gathers, Azor Ahai shall be born again amidst smoke and salt to wake dragons out of stone.”
In Jon's case, he fits the prophecy figuratively:
After his first two swords shatter (Rhaenys and Aegon), Azor Ahai (Rhaegar) plunges his sword (phallus) into a willing (consenting) Nissa Nissa (Lyanna), whose cries of anguish and ecstasy crack the moon (her womb). Her blood, soul, strength, and courage went into the steel (her baby), and thereafter, Lightbringer (Jon) was never cold to the touch, but warm as Nissa Nissa (his mother) had been warm.
Jon even describes himself as a sword:
I am the sword in the darkness
And while it is still mere speculation that his true name is also Aegon Targaryen in the books (though there are arguments to be made), bearing such a name would give him further association to Mars and his shield:
Aegis is a device carried by Athena and Zeus, depicted as an animal skin or shield
Targe means shield in late Old English
Aryan borrowed from the Sanskrit word ā́rya/ari- meaning attached, faithful, devoted kinsman
The shield that guards the realms of men
As for Daenerys, her name might literally translate to ‘light lady’ or ‘lady of light’:
Dae (alternate spelling of 'day’), of American origin, means ‘light and hope’
Nerys means ‘lady’ in Old Welsh
I am the light that brings the dawn
According to director Alan Taylor, George R.R. Martin confirmed during the filming of season one of Game of Thrones, that:
“It really is all about Dany and Jon.”
But just as both characters encompass the role of Lightbringer, Daenerys and Jon, together, represent the complementary opposites of Venus and Mars: Love and war. Water (ice) and fire. Female and male.
Born of Venus (Aphrodite) and Mars (Ares):
Concordia (Harmonia), who represents social, marital, and political agreement.
Twins Formido (Deimos) and Pavor (Phobos), who represent dread in the midst of battle and the personification of the fear brought by war, respectively.
Cupid (Eros), who represents desire, love, attraction and affection.
Thus, the union of Venus and Mars:
Inspires fear and dread in battle
Creates ideal social concord
Begets love
A Dream of Spring
“People know an ending—but not the ending.” —George R.R. Martin
Spring marks the end of winter. It is associated with renewal, rebirth, rejuvenation, regrowth, and resurrection. March, the month in which spring arrives in the Northern Hemisphere, was named for the Roman god Mars, the god of Spring. The second month of spring, April, or Aphrilis, was sacred to the goddess Venus—its name perhaps derrived from equivalent Greek goddess Aphrodite.
Venus, as the ‘light-bringer’ appears most brightly in the December sky, signalling a phase of rebirth, where winter comes to an end, or spring. To the ancient Greeks, the planet Venus was known as Phosphorus, or ‘bringer of light’. The morning star also went by another name, Heosphorus, meaning ‘dawn-bringer’.
Dawn is described as:
"The first appearance of daylight in the morning; daybreak; sunrise”
However, dawn has another definition that might suggest further positive connotations:
“The beginning or rise of anything; advent: the dawn of civilization"

Art commissioned by @dragonanddirewolf
“It was only when a great warrior arose with his blazing sword Lightbringer that the darkness was put to rout, and light and love returned once more to the world.“

Virgil Lied About His Name
I've been looking into this theory for a little while. I thought it was interesting, went hm, and went along my day.
But I started doing more research when I saw @not-some-background-noise post their own thoughts about it. I put these thoughts on their post as well but I wanted to copy it to it's own thing so I can save it. So here we go:
So Thomas and Joan knew they wanted a unique name for Virgil, Thomas wanted a V name and Virgil stood out bc of being unique, fitting with the Rome motif they were going for and also bc it corresponds to Vigil or vigilance, both of which are great things to relate to anxiety. So okay, roman god of vigil, that search turns up next to nothing. So what about protection?
Mars. Nope, doesn't fit. So let's go back to Virgil. He was a roman poet who wrote three major poems and several smaller ones, including one titled The Storm which is interesting. Cool, but not what we're looking for. So let's dig further.
What about Virgil’s character stands out? He's anxiety yes but after SvS it is apparent that the sides represent more than what C!Thomas named their function as. So okay, what else could Virgil be?
There are two instances where he is almost compared to paranoia. Once by Roman and another by Logan. And the base of paranoia is fear. Supporting this is actually Virgil’s actual room.
Patton is afraid of spiders. Virgil’s room is decorated with them and he has a pet spider. Roman has said he doesn't like the dark. Virgil room is the very essence of dark and brooding, plus we've seen he has the power to kill the lights completely in Embarrassing phases. Having irrational fears goes against logic so maybe that's it for Logan? Especially since when the effects of the room start to effect him his thoughts get more and more scattered, pushing him further from his logical standpoint. That's a bit of a stretch though but there it is.
The last point is Deceit stating to Virgil something along the lines of: "You represent Thomas's fears correct?" And Virgil deflects the question by saying they all know each other, cut to the chase. Interesting, that he avoided answering such a simple question. Of course that could be bc he used to be a dark side but let's take it literally.
He avoided it because he does represent, at his core, all of Thomas' deepest and darkest fears. He is fear. When they were little he was afraid. When he got older he turned to Paranoia. When they were even older and more informed Thomas finally pegged him as Anxiety. But he never lost that baseline of who he is.
And going with the Roman motif, we look up the god of fear. Of course the Greek comes up first, which is Phobos. But the Roman equivalent?
Timor. Or Timorus.
Which interestingly sounds like timorous, which by definition means suffering from nervousness, fear or lack of self confidence.
Sound familiar?
It also fits with the theme of the dark sides names ending in us. (One of us. One of us. Anyway.)
Disclaimer if you look up Timor on google you don’t get good results, as the roman god of fear were I guess known as Pavor. Pavor was often grouped with Pallor to make Pavor and Pallor meaning paleness and fright and they were shown next to Mars as personifications of terror but from what I could see Timorus was another name they went by.

So heya, nice to see you here. I hope you’re prepared to face quite wall of text, because this ended up being 2k+… I think you can see why I didn’t put this at the end of the fic. Turned out that I had way too much to say! And it was too much for even this reblog, so there will be part two.
I got the idea for Sky Blue Eyes while I was listening TSFH’s album Live, and then thought why not write something other than analytical stuff for once, like maybe a drabble… Well, needless to say, it didn't stay as a drabble. 😂 Damn you Muses! But I guess it’s still relatively easy to see that this was originally meant to be an drabble, because nothing of value really happens here. But anyway, I hope you enjoy this! Fair warning however - since I’m going to talk of the mythological and historical inspirations of Sky Blue Eyes, there will be mentions of things such as war (both real and fictional), death and violence. I’m not going into details when it comes to those, you can look more into them yourself if you want to, but know that topics related to them will be discussed here so be warned if those topics squick you.
Despite me not naming anyone, I think it’s still relatively easy to understand who’s supposed to be who. Though for the sake of transparency, the dad’s supposed be Ares/Mars, the twins are Phobos/Pavor and Deimos/Formido, their sister is Harmonia/Concordia, the Queen Mother is Hera/Juno and her two daughters are Eileithyia/Lucina and Hebe/Juventus. I originally also thought of adding Nike here as well since she’s sometimes referred as Ares’ daughter, but decided against it in the last minute. Three’s already a lot, four would just make it a woozy.
I went with assumption that Palutena was born the same way Athena was, as an adult. So what this means is that Ares is technically older than her, but he appears younger at the beginning because he was born the regular way and aged like an actual person.
As for Ares’ looks, he’s blonde in reference to one of Pit’s SSBU-skins. I mean, if one of his Brawl-skins was good enough to inspire Dark Pit, I don’t see any reason for why I can’t do the same. That and “Gold as ichor” is too good of an phrase to not use, ichor being the blood of gods. It’s practically identical to the saying “Red as blood” but it sounds much cooler. He’s ridiculously tall because I’m projecting hard into Palutena; if I’m as tall as her yet never felt tall in my life because everyone around me is even taller, it’s only fair that Palutena feels the same. 😂 He’s also not the only character I’ve made a design in my mind - I have pretty concrete ideas of what everyone who appears here could look like, Nike and certain another guy included!
So, the war is obviously the Trojan war. That needs no explanation - what may need an explanation is that the guy Palutena was said to accelerate further to monsterhood is Achilles. The Greeks in general were portrayed to be extremely morally bankrupt during the war, and let’s just say that Achilles stands very high on that totem pole if not at the top of it. He’s also guilty of killing Ares’ daughter and Apollo’s son, Penthesilea and Troilus, in very cruel ways - Hector’s death could also count if one believes him to be Apollo’s kid with Hecuba instead of Priam’s. As for what’s Athena’s role in these, it was said that she drove Penthesilea to face Achilles, in art she’s often shown as the one who’s telling him to kill Troilus and she masqueraded as his brother Deiphobus to lure Hector in a false sense of security so that Achilles could kill him. Your child dying in the ways they did would likely discourage anyone from having another one.
The city Ares quickly mentions that was founded by a son of a werewolf and where Palutena supposedly has boy priests? That’s a real place! It’s the city of Tegea in Arcadia, and it was named after it’s (mythological) founder, Tegeates. He was one of 50 sons of Lycaon, the same one who invoked the wrath of gods and was turned into a wolf - and he’s not even the only werewolf from Arcadia, because that place has lot of extremely weird yet interesting werewolf lore. But hey, at least this means the world of Kid Icarus could easily have werewolves and no one could stop us from adding them to our fanfics or other works! As for the boy priests, that’s connected to Aleus who was a descendant of Lycaon through his daughter Callisto (yes, as in Ursa Major). He founded the cult of Athena Alea, named after himself of course, and for some reason the cult used boy priests who abdicated when they reached puberty. Why? Historians would like to know that as well.
Also the war Ares talks of is inspired by an actual war that happened between Tegea and Sparta. Spartan king Charilaus had beef with Tegea which would continue on for generations, though his luck with this conquest wasn’t so great - when he first invaded, he was captured by the Tegeans. It’s told that what turned the tides in favor of the Tegeans was an ambush by Tegean women, which made the Spartan soldiers flee; once the battle was won the women offered Ares a sacrifice and celebrated the victory alone, which earned Ares the epithet Gynaecothoenas (it means either Feasted by women or He who entertains women, depending on who you ask). Pausanias even mentions one these women by name, Marpessa; he tells that her shield was put on display in the same temple that supposedly housed the hide of the Calydonian boar. And this is why I recommend to look not just mythology but also history when seeking out inspiration! Where else could we learn things such as this?
Pit’s mum is also inspired by a mythological figure, although a very obscure one. Her name was Aerope and she was a princess of Tegea, and the already mentioned Aleus was her paternal grandfather. Not much is said of her except that her father was one of the Argonauts and participated in the Calydonian boar hunt, along with that Ares loved her and she died while giving birth to their son - making her one of the only if not the only woman in the mythos who died of childbirth. Their son did end up living though, as in Ares’ wishes he was still able to suckle from his mother. Because of this Ares was worshiped under the epithet Aphneius (Abundant), as a giver of food and plenty.
How come Palutena and Hera have such a good relationship? Because Hera and Athena have one in the mythos, it’s simple as that. They even went as far as to plan to overthrow Zeus together with the help of Poseidon and Apollo, though that plan failed - Hera and Athena got away with no big consequences, but Poseidon and Apollo were made to build the walls of Troy. That leads into more shenanigans that explain some things that would happen later on, but long story short Priam’s father was a jackass, so Apollo and Poseidon gave him appropriate payback.
Why doesn’t Ares want to tell Hera about Pit? Because she has shown that she’s willing to sacrifice her grandchildren to get what she wants, that’s why. For example, in Heracles’ ninth labor Hippolyta quite willingly hopped out of her clothes for Heracles… Then Hera came down, disguised as an Amazon and came up with a rumor that he was going to kidnap Hippolyta. A fight happened, Hippolyta died, Antiope was abducted and Heracles got away with Hippolyta’s girdle anyway, so she achieved nothing except killing one of her granddaughters and putting another one down to a miserable path (Antiope ends up becoming Theseus’ wife and she’s either killed during the Attic war or Theseus abandons her in favor of Ariadne’s younger sister while she’s pregnant with Hippolytus). I’d say that’s good enough reason to not tell her anything.
So, about why Pit’s eye color is made out to be a big deal - I think you all know how most kids are born with light-colored eyes, blue being the most common. Their eye color starts to change into their actual one when they’re about half a year old, so around the age Pit is when Palutena meets him the first time. So Ares expected Pit’s eye color to change into his mother’s green one, and is surprised when Palutena points it out that those blue eyes are there to stay. And yes, when referring to a color honeydew is in fact a very light green
About wings and how common they are - the answer is very common, even if you focus only those who have bird-like wings. The Erotes and Nike are the obvious ones, but the likes of Eos, Iris, Thanatos, Hypnos, Hebe, Typhon, Echidna, Nemesis, Sphinx and even the Gorgons have been portrayed with bird-like wings from time to time. Heck, Medusa originally having wings is in fact the reason why Pegasus has wings (he’s a horse because Poseidon’s the god of horses)! Ares having wings here is my own artistic liberty, though I suppose it’s not too far off since he has fathered many winged children.
Pit’s name is honestly pretty funny when you think of it. It’s shortening of Cupid, as in “Desire”. By that logic, he might as well be named “Ire”. Compare that to the likes of Oeagrus (Of the wild sorb-apple), Heracles (Honor of Hera), Autolycus (The wolf itself), Bellerophon (Wielder of missiles) or Penthesilea (Mourned by the people), it sure stands out.
So, I wrote a thing. Probably not the best thing I’ve ever written, but I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t have fun while making it, so I thought why not share it here. Palutena and Pit are possibly OOC though, but I hope it’s not too noticeable.
I’m also likely going to share the overly long author’s notes here in a reblog once I get them on a presentable state, because I want to share that 2k+ wall of text somewhere. Turned out that I had way too much things to say than any end note section should allow 😂
