Awww thank you so much! I'm flattered that you love Crimson Hydrangea as much as you do! Haha! I know Garret would absolutely melt and lose all sense of control of he ever hear you speak of him so positively. ; )

Garret - He would honestly be at a loss for what to do at first. Despite his wealth, he really doesn't have many life experiences outside of the island. Not only that, but the only social circles he's ever been involved in were with the upper echelons of Saint Anne's, and unfortunately there aren't that many openly queer people in those circles. That being said, he'd hear you out, support any and all decisions you made, and the moment he was alone he would obsessively google anything and everything he could about the situation. That way the next time you two meet he would be far more knowledgeable and supportive on how to help you through this transition.

As for the transphobe, let's just say he would have them dragged out, never to be seen or heard from again. Garret would then try to distract you with a nice gift or a romantic date out on the town.

Marcelo - He would probably be a bit taken off guard at first, mostly surprised that he hadn't picked up on any signs of your discomfort or disphoria. However once the reality sunk in he would take the time to listen and hear you out before offering to connect you with a few of his friends on the island in the queer community. ( one of which you might actually see in day 3 )

Marcelo would essentially tell the transphobe to fuck off before leading you away. However, if they followed or tried to escalate the situation, let's just say Marcelo would be forced to take a less peaceful route. Either way, Marcelo would check in on you and see how you were feeling after the confrontation.

Camilla - This wouldn't be the first time someone came out to her. That being said, she would do everything in her power to create a safe space and intently listen to you as you opened yourself up to her. She would be understanding and supportive of your transition and offer to not only connect you with helpful resources, but offer to go shopping with you when/if you decided to switch up your wardrobe.

In terms of the transphobe, she'd warn them to back off and if they continued she'd pull her phone out and start recording. She'd let them dig their own grave before posting it online and effectively tarnishing their reputation, if they even had one that is. She'd also check in on you emotionally to make sure you were alright after the stressful situation.

Rita - Much like Garret, she would quietly listen to you and reassure you that nothing's changed for them and they still see the amazing person that you are. However once they got a moment alone they'd do far more research on how to better support you on your journey. Coming from an insulated and deeply religious background, She is admittedly a bit out of her element when it comes to these kinds of topics. However, she would happily educate herself on the topic if it meant supporting you and getting closer. Rita is never one for confrontations, however she wouldn't think twice about going to bat for you. Because of her research, she would be able to refute any and all arguments that they might have had, making them look foolish towards the end of the altercation. Afterwards she would check in on you and make sure that the transphobe's words didn't shake your sense of self.

Teagan - Surprisingly enough, Teagan would probably react the best in this scenario solely because they were in your very shoes not too long ago. While they ultimately came out as nonbinary, they did go through bouts of dysphoria, self doubt, and uncertainty about their gender identity. As a result, they'd listen to you know what to say to help you process things.

If they encountered a transphobe being openly nasty to you, they'd verbally obliterate them until you either pulled them apart, or the transphobe swung first. Once that happened, all bets would be off. Mostly in a legal sense. They'd sue them for everything their worth and make sure to treat you to anything your heart desired as a result.

gelboys cinematography go brrr, episode 5

this week's post is a little scuffed because there's soooo much I loved about episode 5, the camerawork was so deliberate in how it framed the tension between bua, chian, and fourmod, and I really want to do it justice but it's also my last day of vacation so things are kind of hectic. but we roll!

lonely boys in the big city

while this episode focused mainly on bua's POV, with the series being this far in, all four characters got their fair share of screen time, and the camera made sure to show all of them isolated in public spaces, long angled shots holding the viewer at bay, bua most of all. (a significant contrast because he, out of all the characters, seeks validation from the greater public via social media, given his aspirations of being an influencer and subsequent fixation on numbers—even if he uses it as an excuse to cling to chian.)

relatedly, this show's ability to interweave physical space and digital space, the public and the private, is incredibly effective. so far bua has been the one to cross those boundaries—chian's dorm room and classroom, baabin's secret twitter account—while only giving others glimpses into his personal life in the digital realm via tiktok or instagram. that's why the final scene, where baabin goes to comfort bua, feels so momentous. of course, it's not the first time he's been there; bua invited baabin over to stream lisa's new MV when he was feeling desperate.

fourmod in the observer's seat

loved this entire extended sequence of fourmod playing cameraman for chian and bua, which starts in fourmod's POV (watching chian and bua dance in real space), cuts to situate fourmod as the observer of all that follows, then assumes fourmod's POV once more (you can see his hand filming them, still in frame), before pulling out to show how apart he is from chian and bua in both physical space and digital space (by having him watch the video he recorded).

revolving thirds

you all know how dirty framing works by now so I'm not going to go into too much detail regarding the mechanics of it, but the way the World's Most Awkward Hangout unfolded, with the camera continuously rotating fourmod and bua in and out of the "third" role over multiple locations, from afternoon into evening, stressed me tf out. this sequence—increasing the visual distance between bua and fourchian, that sense of isolation—was absolutely diabolical work:

but just as you think fourmod might have the emotional upper hand, the scene shifts to their tiktok filming (covered above), where fourmod is distinctly framed as the outside observer, and then to the meal, where there was more back and forth with the framing, but ends with this moment where bua tries to cover up the camera's view of fourmod with his hand as he invites chian to share a secret. chian demurs at first, then gives in, at which point fourmod is completely obscured.

throughout the entire hangout, it was always fourmod and bua who took turns being the visual third wheel, so I knew this was coming, and when it did I had my pillow in a death grip:

like hell chian was going to escape this situation without being put in the middle himself! here he's finally forced to make a decision, and I have to give pide a lot of credit because chian's expression of frozen terror gets me every single time. ugh it's so good.

fourmod has not stopped running

unlike chian, who simply dissociates, fourmod's coping method is to physically remove himself from any situation where he might be forced to engage with frustration or anger. he does it TWICE during his date with chian, first when chian (once again) denies him the confirmation of their relationship, then after chian tries to placate him with physical affection. and each time he pretends to be absorbed in whatever he's watching. (I loved the detail of only fourmod's face being illuminated by the glow of the screen the entire time.)

fourmod also runs from baabin after they finally reach a head on the whole chian situation. baabin threatens to end their friendship, and after a bit of simmering, fourmod [deep sigh] storms off. and the next time we see them in the same frame, baabin has physically turned his back on fourmod's pain. baabin is no longer offering fourmod solace; instead he transfers that energy to bua later.

I had more I wanted to say about the extended scene between bua and chian at uni but I'm out of braincells for now so I will do some more thinking on my very long plane ride tomorrow...

Homare: Wait right there, Director-kun. I shall brew some tea for you posthaste.

Director: Thank you! It really was bone-chillingly cold outside, so I appreciate it.

Tsumugi: The Summer Troupe just came back as well. Were you with them, Director?

Izumi: Yes. They wanted to go to the beach to play while we were out, actually.

Izumi: As we kept talking, we decided to go to the beach in the middle of winter… It was a spur of the moment decision, basically.

Homare: Dear me, a day like today is no time to go to the beach…

Tsumugi: …  I don’t think we’re ones to talk.

Homare: … Quite true.

Homare: Come now, Director-kun. Drink this and let it warm your body.

Izumi: Thank you. … It’s delicious. I feel warmer already.

Tsumugi: Winter is approaching, so we have to start getting ready for it.

Aziraphale leaving Crowley for the greater good vs Virgil leaving Remus for (what I assume to be) mainly his personal good. Crowley/Remus = stupid gay sort-of-evil disasters. Virgil would also be good as Crowley but I would be terminally impressed by any fic author that managed to make Remus as Aziraphale make sense.

It's that time of year again.

Another design-y layout. Noticed this year I ended up using a lot more light color schemes than last year. I guess it's because this year I wasn't really feeling the same level of 'edge' and 'excitement'. But that's a point for later on. Before that, let's talk about each piece from this year.

January - Io, meets Io!

The first finished pic of the year. Demonic Io meets Reploid Io! This was made as piece to show off both versions of Io together, and reploid! Io ended up being my PFP on other sites for most of the year.

The story of Jade and Iri, two girlfriends where after their computer breaks in a freak accident they have to get a new one... everything goes wrong. This project has had it's ups and downs since then, mostly suffering from post-graduation fatigue + being unable to rebuild a buffer in time. But It's still ongoing & at the time of writing is looking to be finished in 2024.

So, 2023 huh...

Speaking from a personal standpoint, I feel like one hand there was a lot of good that came out of this year for me. I graduated college, I tabled at my first event, I entered 2 zines, I did plenty of comic stuff, and I got back into a hobby after 3 years. But also this year was extremely stressful and demoralizing on many fronts. There's witnessing the industry I went to college for beginning to go under (thanks a lot AI techbros) that started to weigh on me, as well as witnessing & getting reaffirmations on how draconic the art industry is (infact, reading through #comicsbrokeme on twitter reaffirmed my choice to stay indie). But I think a rough post-college transition and struggling to get back on my feet afterwards might've been one of the biggest hurdles in the end.

Think of it like, going from having a studio space and semi-independence & being in contact with IRLs, and then going back home to somewhere better suited to where I was 5+ years ago. Maybe it's because my area's unwalkable, or relationships with my parents have been, wonky to say the least. Or maybe it's the uncertainty of it all. There's a lot.

This year compared to even the rougher parts of 2022 I feel like I've gotten, sadder? & having a lot lower energy. As I hinted at earlier, I think it even shows in my art. I noticed while editing my galleries mid-year that I think I lost some of the 'edge' that my 2022 artwork had. Doesn't mean it's worse, but I do feel it shows the change of energy from past years to now from high-energy to just needing a break.

Last year, I ended on a note about pulling out of pursuing full-time art. Mostly due to realizing how terrible the art world currently is in terms of treating art as "content with value measured by numbers" (ugh...). Though since then, I've decided instead of fully withdrawing from art as a career I'd rather continue to pursue it as a part-time indie artist. Hey, art has always been a dream job after all. Even if I don't want to break into the industry as of now and things are pretty scuffed, I don't think I'd be happy with completely backing out either.

The bigger question now is... what now? I've made loose plans & goals for myself going forward, art-wise I still want to do comics pursue part-time work. But also, I don't really know what the future holds, and that terrifies me. And like last year & the year before it, I don't want to jinx it for myself. Most of my goals for next year are personal & more about continuing to get back on my feet post-college after scrambling and sinking. Some art related, some life related. I don't have to be shooting for the most perfect outcome, I just need to make sure I don't drown.

His sweaters? Now all yours. You have no say. He will give you one every day knowing you find alot of comfort in wearing his clothes.

Tommy would let you relax on his bed, heck even sleep on it as well.

Doesn't care if your drains stain the bed. That's an easy clean up and he wants you to be comfortable.

After you healed a bit your parents got called into work. Leading to you spending a few days over there.

You was shocked and confused when they had a few get well soon gifts.

Tommy got you a small fidget toy, just something to do with your hands sometimes.

Wilbur got you a few books and a small stuffed toy.

You loved it but still loved the one that george got you.

It was something that was soft and easy to cuddle.

Sapnap is a bit more experienced with it.

Kind of knowing what to do and all together he just know more then most people.

There is a regular schedule for you meds and so called meals, he changes out the dog pads if he notices them dirty. He knows how to maneuver himself next to you so there was no pain.

He also sucked up that he would be overwhelmingly hot and sat next to you under the blanket.You weren't nearly as cold because of that.

Also since sapnap lives with dream I imagine that dream pops in some times and so does patches.

You all were probably best friends as children. And people always thought that you and dream would get together.

Only because you two were more touchy.

But you saw him as an older brother, and took a liking to sapnap.

Dream was really suportive and saw you as a little sibling.

Dream probably saw you not doing to well and made you something to eat and brought your pain medication.

That was because sapnap was sleeping next to you.

Patches curled up between to two of you and dream brought in something you hadnt seen before.

A roll away bed.

This mother fucker got a whole new bed just so he could sleep in the same room as you and sapnap.

Okay, so. Some of the Moon Knight stuff I like, some of it I don’t, the actual Egypt stuff is sketchy, but I’m here to be mentally ill not an anthropologist. So!

I really, genuinely do not like their “switching” sequence. What are you, a magical girl? Do we really need you to be arching up with your eyes rolled back like a demon, sir? I don’t care if it’s a TV show, switching does not look like that and it is painfully, harmfully inaccurate.

I’m not going to make overarching claims on what it “feels like” to be in the back because everyone’s different, but the unwashed American preacher man with a highly inaccurate vaguely evangelical “Ammit” cult being able to peg that Steven is a system from spying on one conversation is a little sketchy to me. Layla’s disbelief is a lot more believable, if torturous as an audience member- my ex didn’t really believe what was going on with me until my other me fronted very dramatically once in a parking lot.

The other thing that, while understandable given the plot, drives me ABSOLUTELY NUTS is people trying to posi trigger Marc. You don’t do that. You don’t fucking do that.

For those unaware: your average citizen is probably passingly familiar with a negative trigger. Let’s say someone comes from an abusive home, and the abusive parent smokes. Cigarette smoke, therefore, would get associated with terrible horrible things, and like Pavlov’s dogs, even the scent of it later might have them panicking and backing into the nearest corner regardless of logic.

Negative triggers also work in a system for queuing switches, because if you’re in danger, the part of you best equipped to handle that is going to handle that while you dissociate half out of your mind from fear. I’m giving you the Sparknotes, but that’s the very basics.

A positive trigger is something that makes your brain go brrr in a good way. This works with alters too. If one of your alters really likes writing, you might consistently forget what happens during poetry class because that alter is going instead of you. You’re not traumatized about writing or anything, they just... really like it and there you go.

Now, manners time.

Outside of possibly a medical setting, it is completely unacceptable for someone outside of the system to try to control who’s fronting for their own personal benefit. Calling names, asking us to bring an alter out, using positive or negative triggers to force a switch- none of that is okay and you should not do that. We are not carnival wheels for you to flip for your convenience, we’re people. Alters have a function within the system that is not to cater to the whims of third parties.

There are rare exceptions to the rule, because sometimes I ask my friends to help me posi trigger out an alter, but you should never do it unprompted.

“Can I talk to Marc?” Polite, if bizarre coming from a stranger.

“Marc Spector where is the scarab.” (at Steven) Entirely unacceptable, up your mother’s ass, goodbye.

I get what the context is, in the story, but by all the gods if people are watching this not knowing which parts are magical Hollywood and which parts are mental health then somebody needs to say these things.
