East Palace, West Palace in ep5 of Blue Canvas of Youthful Days

I have been punched in the solar plexus by Blue Canvas of Youthful Days episode 5. So much happens in that episode that is overwhelming, from Qi Lu setting up a Netflix-and-chill date with the clear intention of making a move, to his putting on the famous film East Palace, West Palace (1996), to Qi Lu hiding Qin Xiao in the closet, to Qi Lu's panic at his father realizing he's been lied to, to the devastatingly practiced way Teacher Liu steps to Qi Lu being abused and handles his father, to the way Qi Lu shuts down, to the way QIn Xiao keeps sending mixed signals and Qi Lu calls him on it directly. And nobody else in this episode let me rest either; Tan Fan trying to ask Teacher Liu to wait for him and Liu brushing him off AGAIN, and Turtle trying to call out

@lurkingshan was already more coherent than I can be right now about what happened in the episode in her post.

So instead I want to focus on some queer cinema history that this episode evoked by using East Palace, West Palace as the film that Qi Lu shows to QIn Xiao.

For those who don't know, EPWP is considered to be the first realistic depiction of a gay man in film by a mainland Chinese production. It is to my knowledge the first time a gay man says "I love you" to another man on screen. It was made before being gay was decriminalized in China (1997), and it was filmed by an independent production company and smuggled out of China to France in order to be finished and distributed. It ended up at the Cannes festival in 1997, but the director's passport was seized and he was placed under house arrest to prevent him from attending. Despite pressure to pull the film, it still aired that year. In 1998, the Film Law was passed to prevent anyone from making films outside of the studio system (and therefore censorship review), effectively preventing anything like EPWP from being made in the future.

The film is about a gay man who cruises in the notorious bathrooms in the parks on either side of Tiananmen Square getting harassed by police officers (a situation extremely familiar to the historical queer experience in Canada [where I'm from] as well) and playing what I'd describe as a psychological game with one of them; A Lan kisses the cop, runs, and then gets caught a second time, and uses the second police confession as an excuse to tell his life's story in the public record, all while pushing the police officer a little further into deviance. As far as I'm aware, this film has been banned in China since being made and never shown (please correct me if I'm wrong about that!).

This is hitting me hard because of the much more recent history of Blue Canvas of Youthful Days itself. As most of you know, but I'll capture here for posterity, episodes 1-4 of this show aired on iQIYI (a China-based app) on August 6, and within 24 hours they were pulled from the app with no information about the future episodes being shown. When I watched episode 5 today, after waiting for it for 3 months, I was immediately hit with a wave of anger that this gorgeous, emotionally moving and powerful episode had been held back from public consumption for months, for the same reasons that the film being shown within the episode had been withheld from viewing in its own country.

Censorship is such an ugly thing, it's hard to articulate but the emotions around it are so strong because we know, when they pull or refuse to show media that depicts our lives, it's because they don't want our lives to be real; they don't want us to exist. It's a very real threat. And to have this episode--which is all about an abused boy who is in very real danger but so bravely insisting that he shoot his shot and take his best chance at love and happiness anyway, using the iconic confession scene from one of the most famous banned films in Chinese queer cinema history to do it--to have this episode be the one that was prevented from airing......I am overwhelmed.

In the scenes they watch in episode 5, A Lan tries to prevent the officer from uncuffing him, and then the officer lets him go, but A Lan doesn't go far and comes back. He declares his love to the officer's face, and demands that his love be acknowledged and not dismissed. And the officer does not know what to do with it and reacts with violence, which is partially what A Lan has been angling at all along. The show really played with this by having all three of the couples in the show stymied by having their overtures dismissed this episode, but we almost didn't get to see it.

I'm so grateful this got distribution now, and on multiple platforms. Blue Canvas of Youthful Days is airing Saturdays and Sundays on GagaOOLala and Youtube (note, as per @thisonelikesaliens's excellent language posts, the subs on Gaga are much better), and on Mondays on Viki. I know there is an avalanche of content right now, but this show is so good and worked so hard to make it to us, please give it some love!

Her smell: sweat, heat, spicy perfume, hair products - wafts over you, squeezing everything that isn't her out of your lungs. Slightly laboured breathing slipping out of her tinted lips rings in your ears louder than the blood pumping like crazy in your temples.

Valeria is all you see, all you hear, all you smell, all you feel. You're at her mercy, your life on the sharp edge of her blade. Yet when she asks if you're afraid, the only second of hesitation before your answer is due to your throat forgetting how to breathe in such close proximity to a goddess.

"No."

Her smirk widens, now both canines visible - she's stunning, the sun itself, never shying away from the duality of bringing life and scorching it. The way her dark hair frames her face, the slightly rough texture of her caramel skin, the piercing look in her eyes as she stares right into your soul, seeking the truth. You almost feel guilty for the melting mess your brain is at the sight of her, she'll have to search through a syrupy swamp of worship and adoration to find at least one coherent thought there.

You almost flinch when Valeria suddenly grasps the back of the chair she pinned you down on and tilts you backwards, leaving you with no support under your useless dangling feet. Sharp gasp escapes you with a delay, excitement and adrenalin rush boiling your face, and your breath hitches as you register the ease Valeria holds most of your weight now with, keeping the chair from tipping over and dropping you back first onto the floor.

Your eyes leave her magnetic features for the first time in what feels like hours - just to admire the straining muscles in her arm, tan skin and tattoos stretching over the bulging bicep. She doesn't need to follow the direction of your gaze to know what has you in awe once again.

The knife resumes it ascension, deviating from the straight route to find its way to your nipple, painfully hard since the very beginning of the scene. Pointy tip hooks under the bud and flicks it, causing you to make another pathetic, breathy noise.

"Que necesitia, mi mascota," Valeria tuts, but there's zero disapproval in the shining look her eyes bear as they skim all over your shivering form. You're sweating, your core strained and quievering from the attempts to find your footing with your slipping toes and not move forward at the same time. "Want me to put you back down?"

Her blade jumps, skipping several life-threatening points only to land straight on your throat. Clean edge now denting your skin without even a thin layer of cloth to serve even as metaphorical protection, the tip pressing into the soft flesh under your jaw.

Valeria draws blood. It stings, because sweat slides right into the fresh scratch. You dare not to swallow, goosebumps covering your whole body, your thighs twitching to close shut and press your own tied palms into your crotch, hot and throbbing.

"Please," you mutter in response, begging before you choke on your drool, uncontrollable desire consuming you the faster the more control Valeria takes away from you. "Want to... need to kiss you, por favor-"

White teeth nip your lower lip lovingly, then she pulls away and looks at you once again - that studying, cutting through all layers, deep gaze.

"Always have that crazy look when you look at me, sugar," her thumb strokes your cheekbone before Valeria tightens her grip on your face and makes you tilt your head upwards almost till your neck cracks. "Love you, loco."

Her hot, wet tongue presses into your skin, licking up already drying trail of fresh blood. The scratch stings again, synchronizing with the throbbing ache in your groin.

It's obvious by now the Mags are channeling angels of the Great Light when you use a Photon Blast, but Mags were made using D-Cells extracted from Dark Falz. To elaborate; Magic/spiritualism has fascinated me since about the age of 10. I've read about many religions from wicca, buddhism, hinduism, kemeticism (where my beliefs landed) hermeticism (young me would have fallen into this), and general abrahamic (studied as an attemt to understand the Falz seal) and in this order, throughout the 20 or so years.

Hermeticism originated in hellenestic Egypt (prior known as Kemet, but known at the time as the Ptolemaic Kingdom and includes greece) and was founded by a greek/egyptian, Hermes Trismagistus. Two of the major philosophies that go into hermeticism are theurgy (uniting with the divine, which this theme continues into episode 3) and alchemy (fuck around and find out) The meddling with D-Cells with both Dr. Montague creating mags, and Dr. Osto creating bio-weapons -to me- is an example of alchemy, while Photon is an established science.

So back to as above so below and light/dark alongside Hermeticism, the translation by Issac Newton of the Emerald Tablet is as follows;

I've been on dating apps during this hour and its better lol. Anything that makes you feel good is a go to. Going to eat, going to the movies, or just simply enjoying yourself at home could be beneficial. Posting and/or taking pictures will help find that spark. ;)

Mars Hour - Working out. Creating space for you to strengthen your mind and abilities. Can help with practicing and getting you to focus on the end goal. Things seem to get done a lot faster.. as well as you sometimes doing something on impulse, I've caught myself doing that during this hour sometimes.

Mercury Hour - Your thoughts can be supported during this time. Being playful, drawing or writing would be beneficial. Starting a podcast, singing, focus on the voice.. etc. <3

Saturns Hour - Anything mundane. Tasks that need to be done. Working hard on a project or just simply being productive is exactly a good thing for this time of the day. Resting can also be necessary as saturn moves slow and maybe you need to slow down a bit.

Jupiters Hour - Can be big and expansive. If you want to teach people something then this time is the perfect time to do it. Prayer and meditation rituals work really good here and can sharpen your mind more. You can pay off debts during this hour and it'll bring money back to you ten fold. Intuitive exercises can be of great benefit.

No wonder other religions have to pray to various saints: god’s eyes and ears are firmly on Jill 24/7 so he doesn’t have time for anyone else because he has to make sure she gets her 12th vacation of the year and that her dollar store tiara shows up in the mail on time.

It's funny that Jill pretends to have such reverence for god when she talks about him like her agent or secretary lol.

I have seen Jill post about the products before, but in a way that was so understated compared to her Plexus promos, I thought maybe she was just trying help her daughters out or something. I think the in-person market with Melaleuca is probably wayyyy more substantial than it was with Plexus, because they really tapped in to this "non-toxic everything" trend and the mistrust conservative Christians have for every type of "mainstream" company or entity right now.

And I have nothing against using more natural replacements for household products obviously, I do it myself and have been for years, as have many people. But one thing you find out after lots of trial and error is, a lot of these larger "natural" product companies just use the "natural" label as an excuse to put less effort into things that would normally have to be researched and tested more. Like when apple cider vinegar had a moment a couple years ago (and it's great for some things don't get me wrong), these companies would just throw it into everything to appeal to the trend, regardless of it the product really worked or not. I don't know enough about Melaleuca to know how well their products actually work (hard to know when the only people you know who use it also sell it lol). But I guess it's gonna stay that way because I don't want to give any support to company that has so many questionable representatives. Not to mention the MLM of it all, which they, of course, deny.

Anyway it's just funny how most fundie women (but esp Jill) claim to want this old-timey, homestead-y kind of family life, but always find loopholes so they don't actually have to do it lol. Women don't work, *unless* it's for an MLM. They're insistent on using only non-toxic products, but instead of learning how to make them simply, they trust a corporation to do it for them. I mean at least Michelle Duggar knew how to make her own laundry detergent.

Well, since I officially presented my AU, I want to introduce my OCs that will have interaction with Dib as the protagonist.

Some extra facts about them:

Eddie:

Eddie is a hybrid of a powerful human witch and a demon worshipped by a cult.

In that cult, Eddie is worshipped like a prince, but his mother is fed up with his behavior, so she somewhat limited his powers and forced him to do something useful with them.

Dib was performing a spiritual ritual to acquire a "familiar spirit," and upon completing the ritual, Edgar's mother condemned him to be Dib's familiar for an indefinite period of time.

As a familiar spirit, he acquired the physical form of a bat and now lives with Dib and his family.

In his bat form, he can speak, but Professor Membrane apparently doesn't take Eddie's words seriously.

To others, Eddie is seen as "a pet." No one believes Dib when he says he's his "familiar."

At first, Eddie was just a playboy and more like a roommate because he refused to obey Dib, but little by little he began to feel a protective instinct towards Dib and Gaz, to the point that he sees them as younger brothers.

While he's a familiar, he won't be able to acquire his human form at will, only in certain isolated and necessary cases.

She loves shrimp and is somewhat fanatically attached to them.

Being half-demon, she has a certain aversion to some rituals and customs (perhaps holy water).

She spends her time giving Dib advice, some useful, some stupid.

She gets along well with Gaz, although he's sometimes afraid of her. He even protects her sometimes.

Sam:

Sam is a 30-year-old single man with a shop selling imported spiritualism products.

He's legally blind, but sees the world differently. He can perceive auras, energies, and spirits.

He obtained this gift at 15. When he was young, he always had a special gift for perceiving auras after a ritual in the cemetery. He literally went blind, but his gift evolved into the gift of mediumship.

By possessing the gift of mediumship, he has helped some people communicate with spirits, souls of deceased people, and even have brief visions of people's futures.

He can also master atrial plexus travel.

He had a girlfriend who was unfaithful to him when he obtained his gift, and he went blind.

He also possesses some clairvoyance, which helps him read tarot.

The rituals in his shop include tarot reading, predicting some things about the future, and medium sessions for communication.

He became Dib's friend, helped him with a seance, and understood Dib's vibe. He describes him as "a cool schizophrenic."

Of course, he believes Dib, and Dib even frequents his shop to obtain mystical materials for various adventures.

Despite being a witness to everything Dib does, no one believes him because he's "a crazy blind man."

He has a laid-back hippie attitude, and let's say he loves incense, but he smokes cannabis occasionally.

He's a fan of very exotic food. He can often be seen eating food with insects; he's not disgusted by them.

He allowed Tak to work in his shop and gave her asylum. He did Dib a favor, as he's aware of what's happening to her.

He develops a friendship with Tak in the process, describing some human attitudes.

Eddie es un mestizo de una bruja humana y un demonio poderosos al que un culto adora.

En ese culto, Eddie es adorado como un principe, pero su madre esta harta de su comportamiento, así que limito algo sus poderes y lo obligo a hacer algo util con ellos

Dib estaba haciendo un ritual espiritual para poder adquirir un "espiritu familiar", y al persivir el ritual, la madre de edgar lo condenó a ser el familiar de dib por un tiempo indefinidio.

Al ser un espiritu familiar, adquirio la forma fisica de un murcielago, y ahora vive con dib y su familia.

En su forma murcielago puede hablar, pero al parecer el profesor membrana no toma en serio cuando eddie habla.

Para los demás, eddie pasa desapercibido como "una mascota", nadie le cree a dib cuando dice que es su "familiar"

Al principio, Eddie era solo un vividor y más como un roomie pues se negaba a obeder a dib, pero poco a poco empezó a sentir un instinto protector hacia Dib y Gaz, al punto que los ve como hermanos menores

mientras sea un familiar, no podrá adquirir su forma humana a voluntad, solo con ciertos casos aislados y necesarios

Adora los camarones, tiene cierto fanatismo a ellos.

al ser mitad demonio, tiene cierta aberracion algunos rituales y costumbres (quizas agua bendita)

se la pasa dandole consejos a dib, algunos utiles, otros estupidos.

Se lleva bien con gaz, aunque aveces el le tenga miedo a ella. incluso tambien aveces la protege

Sam es un hombre soltero de 30 años que tiene una tienda que vende productos espirituales importados.

El es legalmente ciego, pero ve el mundo de otra forma, puede persivir auras, energías y precenciar espiritus

obtuvo este don a los 15, cuando el era joven siempre tuvo un don especial para persivir precencias después de un ritual en el cementerio, se quedo ciego literalmente pero su don evoluciono hasta tener el don de medium
