Billie Bob Joe

Here’s a little review of an indie film with Cecil.  Below is the official trailer from director Joe Kowalski (Pogie Joe)’s YouTube, and some screenshots of Cecil’s bit. 

If you want to watch the film, you can get the straight link by filling this form (it only asks for your email). They’re currently looking for distributors, so they can’t release the film to everyone yet. That’s why I’m not direct linking.  

I’ll admit I only wanted to see this for Cecil and wasn’t expecting much. I was quite surprised that this film was a lot of fun. It’s fresh, funny, and weird in just the right way. It’s really quite Night Vale-style deadpan humor, and I think many fans would enjoy it.

The movie deals with the conspiracy between people named Joe and people named Bob. Conspiracy-loving Billie (Bridget Messaros) manages to enlist her stepsister Custodia (Macey Heslet) to make a documentary about it. Their relationship and conflict is established in the first scenes and explored throughout. I was particularly impressed with the ending, which I won’t spoil. Suffice it to say that I found the story quite relatable and believable. I particularly liked the character of Custodia, who has lived under Billie’s thumb most of her life. There are also two male characters, who I felt were a bit underutilized. Yes, the female characters are way more fleshed out, for once. Not complaining. 

Obviously, this is a small budget movie, but it somehow avoids that small budget feel in most scenes. It helps that it’s a movie about making a small budget documentary. The characters are fledgling film makers trying to get their big break, so it makes sense that they’d live in small apartments, and so forth. 

The narrative style is part mockumentary, part what I’d call indie film storytelling. (There’s probably a fancier name for it.) We are treated to a number of interview clips from scholars, actors, and regular joes.. um.. bobs.. um people. The mockumentary also contains cute cartoon bits here and there, as well as a historical scene with actors playing “brother Joe” and “brother Bob” back in the 1700′s. I found this particularly hilarious, because their fighting is so petty.  

Cecil has some of the funniest scenes. His bit is about 5 minutes, cut into shorter segments. He plays a rather silly, pudding-obsessed version of himself. If you haven’t seen him perform live, you should check this movie out. Amazing faces. Also good job from Bridget Messaros acting against him. Our Faceless Old Woman, Mara Wilson, also appears in a brief interview. Lost opportunity though- no mention of the creator of WTNV, JOSEPH Fink? 

The story is interesting, and I kept wanting to find out what’s next. (Which was necessary, because the video streaming jammed several times.) The movie is perhaps a bit too long; I would have cut out some boardroom and montage-type scenes from the early part. However, once the story gets going, the flow is good, and the ending scenes were quite climactic. Mockumentaries often end a bit abruptly and don’t have much character develpoment, so this was a nice surprise. 

Overall, this movie was a positive surprise. 3½/5 stars.
