My Control 2 Wishlist

I've had this on my mind the last few weeks after seeing Alan Wake 2 and what Remedy's really capable of when they push the limits of genre and storytelling. No one asked for this list, but I thought it would be fun to divulge some of my thoughts on the matter.

More Music

This list would be remiss if I didn't say I wanted a real musical number for Control. I want singing. I want choreography. Drama. Poets of the Fall jamming out even more. Maybe more of Ahti's dulcet singing voice. Maybe even Darling's too? A duet?

I want even more variety with the genres, too. Give us a love ballad. Give us more storytelling through music.

2. A Mixture of Enemies

I want Jesse to fight more monsters than just the Hiss. I want her to fight paracriminals, especially.

3. More Altered Items and OOPs

Mostly the latter. I would love to hear more about the OOPs Northmoor bound and used.

4. More Inter-Departmental Drama

I want to hear what people think about Jesse as Director following the Hiss invasion. Do people still feel as inspired by her?

5. A LITTLE More Tie-Ins with Alan Wake

I don't want this to swing too hard in the Alan Wake pendulum, but I think there's so many questions regarding the world at large through Alan Wake's story, I want to see some plot threads get tied up through Control.

I still want the story to focus on the Bureau and its agents, but I think it's fine to bring in characters from AW2, namely Anderson and Casey. I also want to know how the Oceanview ties into everything.

6. More Kiran Estevez, and an Update on the Bureau at Large

What it says on the tin. Agent Estevez was a badass. Give us more. Also tell us about her ex-wife and about her rebound relationship she definitely had (or have her get back with her wife).

What happened to the Bureau over the last few years? What's going on? We need an update.

7. More Darling, More Trench

This wouldn't be a wishlist without including them. I'm biased. I love them so much your honor and I want Trench to come back, either as a mentor or in the flesh because why not? Give us a chance to even play as either of these characters for a spell.

8. More Uh, Horniness?

Look, I'm not talking about outright explicit sexual content. But let's be honest. Alan Wake 2 was a bit more horny than it had any right to be. Explain yourself, Sam Lake. Explain yourself, Remedy. Keep bringing hot people doing hot things, especially with the use of FMV. Your fans will love it.

8. The Actual Number 8: More Slice of Life

What I'm genuinely alluding to, all joking aside, is more slice of life interjected into the Bureau's dynamics. More everyday banter. Maybe I just want to see people flirt with Jesse a little. Maybe some gentle nudging from Polaris for Jesse to let down her hair a little.

9. A Follow-Up With Dylan

I think for Jesse's character development, it will be important to address Dylan and what's his status. By extension, I would love to hear more about his potential connection to Mr. Door.

10. More FMV

Goes without saying, but this should become Remedy's signature cherry on top with their games. They have perfected the style and I hope to see more of it.

The Unity Prototype has little story and features but features music, a 3D ship and several characters sprites. It was my first time actually working on writing / directing for a game that is now finished. It was an intense week of work but I had a blast 😄 Learned a lot too, especially in the amount of work even a "small game" asks for lol. And now can I can call myself a game writer without feeling like I'm a fraud!!!!!!! Nice.

Leslie Jones (interviewer for WWTP Cape Radio): Alright, we’re going to ask each of you the same question. What’s your favourite song?

Tanya J. Voss (Trailers): it’s gotta be “Kill the Director” by the wombats. Absolute classic. I know, I know, you were probably expecting me to say something more 80s and Synthwave-y. What can I say? I’m a sucker for britpop. Definitely no other reason.

“Keira Bates” (Dead Beat): Well… DJ Canistro would probably say Murder on the Dance Floor. But since you’re asking me off the clock? I’m gonna agree with Tanya. It is solidly Kill the Director.

Eve Polaris (hyperia after dark, among other things): hmm… a few seasons back I would have said The Swarm by You Me At Six. These days I’m loving Icarus by Bastille, and since becoming the Director I’ve found a real appreciation for Together in Electric Dreams, by the human league.

Leslie: Ah. That explains some things. How about you, Trudy?

Trudy Howell (Stitches): One song I just adore is “tonight you belong to me,” by Patience and Prudence. It’s ever so nostalgic. For something a bit more modern, I do also enjoy “Puppet Loosely Strung” by the correspondents. It reminds me of my darling Neil.

Yvette Long (Survival Games): ooh, that’s a toughie! I don’t really listen to much music… I guess any of instupendo’s instrumentals. I love that dreamy and ever so slightly threatening energy.

Cora (The Crows): Anything by Fish in a Birdcage. If I had to pick one, maybe Rule #21, Memento Mori? I love them all though. There’s something about their instrumentation that just draws me in!

Morgana Faith (Creature Campus [Sorcerer’s Sorority]): I tend to go for songs with that spooky Halloween vibe. Call me basic, but lately I’ve been loving Black Magic by Little Mix and W.I.T.C.H by Devon Cole.

Sasha Linden (Creature Campus [gorgons]): I love that sort of folkloric forest witch energy (don’t tell Morgana though. I’ll never hear the end of it). Songs like The Goddess and the Weaver by Spiral Dance, or maybe Harpy Hare by Yaelokre. All my friends have a more alternative punky vibe, but this stuff is my guilty pleasure music.

Calliope Morningstar (Lucifer’s Lair): Lately I’ve been jamming out to the hellaverse soundtrack! I love Ready for This and All 2 U. Oh? You meant “normal” music? Killjoy. Alright, Pomegranate Seeds by Julian Moon. Final answer.

Arc 1 - Malistaire - 10/10

Prob my favourite.

The writing really ties in every world, even when you speedquest through it.

Contains a lot of my favourite worlds.

Literally the introduction to the game and the place I spent most of my time in when I was a crownless and membershipless young wizard.

I do not like the writing in a majority of the arc

I think I was so disappointed, because I hyped these worlds up so much, the expectations did not meet reality

The ending was a no no

Plot was barely engaging

I only pushed through this for the concepts of Mirage and Polaris and wanted to see where Grandpappy Spider went

The Reverie got me again, nice and fresh mechanics.

I will make a seperate rant on the ending, but no... I don’t like it at all and I don’t see Spider forgiving Raven as a good ending

the script of the bubblegum pink flyer found in your mailbox is cute, loopy; perfect for the occasion - someone put a lot of time and effort into the presentation and aesthetics of the message that everyone around you seems to have also gotten in their mailbox this morning. it’s a party to celebrate the month, something to bring everyone together. just below is a list of sorts, describing the event taking place and just what will be happening ...

MAD BATTERS & HONEYBREWS COFFEE HOUSE will be partnering up for the weekend to provide all sorts of themed refreshments at a discounted price. from heart-shaped shortbread cookies and rose-and-lavender tea to selling handmade mugs themed for the holiday, the two shops have come together to provide something for all ages to enjoy throughout the event.

THE DAPPER OWL is also offering themed drinks at a discounted price, but these are for the older crowd - cocktails colored pink and red, some with glitter infused in them, some smelling of strawberries or watermelon. they’re as much a treat for the eyes as they are for the mouth, but that typical alcoholic sting still holds a sharp bite that will keep everyone on their toes.

MAXIMUM GAMES is coming in from sunset beach to provide the entertainment ! classic boardwalk games such as ring toss, balloon popping, water gun races, and even a few pinball machines, air hockey tables, and arcade cabinets have been rolled out to their area for everyone to enjoy for the classic price of twenty-five cents. tickets will be available for purchase for the booth games at hang loose. you’ll be able to find this section of the block if you listen for the throwback ballads of all the boy bands we grew up loving and swooning over.

THE REEL will be dedicating all of their screens to the romance genre this weekend. from modern rom-coms such as 30 going on 30 and 27 dresses to the classics such as casablanca and singin’ in the rain, couples and hopeless romantics alike will find something to spend their time watching for the first time, seeing again after years, or enjoying it as their favorite movie of all time.

ROSE PETAL NUSERY has put together something truly special that will bring back memories of elementary school - flower grams ! operating from their booth near their shop, you can send a single rose bloom or a bundle of three roses to the person of your choice for a reasonable price, keeping it anonymous or signing your name with it. there will be a ‘rose ceremony’ at the end of the weekend to pass them all out, the post office providing their hand in helping as well.

HANG LOOSE SOUVINERS has taken their normal beachwear and replaced it with pinks, whites, reds, and lots of sparkles. in town for the bash as well, you can grab anything from a cute bauble-headband to some adorable heart-shaped sunglasses for a good price. a sticker and small holiday-themed button comes with each purchase as well. they are also the hub for purchasing tickets for maximum games’ activities - twenty-five cents per ticket, with discounts on rolls.

POLARIS STARGAZING will offer anyone who is looking for something quieter and a little more intimate something to take part in. along with selling art prints of the night sky painted each night for couples to take home as a commemorative decoration, every night starting at 9pm they will be holding their special night under the stars on the edge of town - bring your blankets, pillows, and some hot chocolate from honeybrews to look on at the gorgeous night sky with friends, family, your significant other, or your crush.

the entire weekend will be hosted by town hall in close partnership with MIGHTY RIVER RADIO. the station will be providing the music and nightly entertainment, with a dancefloor set up right in front of the founder statue that changes colors - going from soft white to red to pink and back - once the sun goes down. their playlist will provide something for everyone, from slow jams to hold your loved one close to something everyone can jump around to all the way down to original works from members of the town.

hello everyone, and welcome to our grand opening and inaugural event !! with it being feburary, the month of companionship, tor and i decided that it would be a great idea to immediately bring us all together with something really fun, easygoing, and light ! basically, this block party is like most other block party town events you might have experienced in the past - shops from the beach and the river are coming into town to provide entertainment, food, drinks, and activities for everyone to take part in. themed food and drinks, handmade goods and cute souvenirs to take home, games to play, people to interact with - the works ! and to end every night, the radio station sets up the dancefloor for everyone in town to enjoy with their drinks and snacks and get their last bits of energy out. keep reading for a summary of the event requirements !!

EVENT DURATION IN-CHARACTER : four days ( from the 19th to the 22nd of february )

EVENT DURATION OUT-OF-CHARACTER : eight days ( from the 19th of february to the 26thth of february )

PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS : this is a mandatory event to participate in !

STARTER REQUIREMENTS : every character will be allowed one free starter ! after that, two open starters must be answered before posting another open starter, and one open starter must be replied to before posting a closed starter.

ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS : normal activity requirements still apply - five posts must be made in the first two weeks or your role will be subject to reopening.

hi, i recently listened to the stupendium's control song and the game seems right up my alley. i don't know where to start finding content about the game and you seem to be the place where i could get a good answer. what is the game about exactly? i would just like a general plot before i got off and research everything i can about it lol (also, the song is called "slide into the void" if you want to listen to it if you haven't already)

and heck yea dude!!! the game was actually pretty inspired by SCP according to some sources I’ve looked at! the base plot, without giving too much away but still giving you a good feel for it, is basically this:

You play as Jesse Faden, a woman on search for her brother who went missing when they were children. She knows there’s a lot more to the world than people admit, because she’s had encounters with the paranatural as a child, and she’s on the hunt for truth as well.

A ...force? being? that mentally bonded with Jesse in her head-- something sentient but distinct, a “guiding star” she’s named Polaris-- has guided her to this building in NYC called the Oldest House, big and intimidating and stark against the rainy skyline-- which is why Jesse thinks it’s really weird that she’s never noticed the building before. You start the game as she enters the place, that is clearly a government building-- some placed called the Federal Bureau of Control but seems pretty abandoned. 

A lone janitor mopping the halls assumes you are there for the interview to be his assistant and points you in the direction of the Director’s office. You follow his directions down the old carpeted hallway where the Director’s portrait is hung and push the doors open to find the Director dead on the floor. Polaris urges you to pick up the gun lying next to him, so you do-- only to find yourself declared the new Director. Picking up the weapon was like being dubbed worthy of mjolnir, or pulling the sword from the stone. 

Stepping back out into the halls, your own picture is now in place of the old portrait. The hallway you used to get here is gone, so your only option is to plunge deeper into the building! Come to find the place is under lockdown, as they’re in a state of an emergency-- not only have most of their Paranatural items gone rogue or missing, but there’s an attack against the FBC by a sort of parasitic “resonance” that can corrupt and control you. Jesse is immune, and as new Director (and if she wants to get out of here, or get answers) it’s her job to keeping pushing in deeper and uncovering the mystery of the place.

It’s super well done IMO, it looks beautiful, all the character’s are [chef’s kiss], the tone and balance between serious heartfelt moments and quirky comedy are perfecto, the music slaps, the vibe is great, I Love It. Items that the FBC is keeping include a rubber duck, a fridge, a television, a ramen shop lantern, a flamingo, a phone, a carousel horse....

A Crack in Time is more Ratchet and Clank in every shape, size and form. The wacky Dr Nefarious returns and swears vengeance upon those who wronged him. You’ll team up with familiar faces like Captain Quark and even a fellow Lombax in order to stop the maniacal robotic villain.⁣ ⁣ A Crack in Time largely remains the same as all other Ratchet games. You’ll grind rails, find new weapons, smack boxes, vaporize baddies and cruise from planet to planet discovering new locales all while collecting bolts. Hover boots allow Ratchet to zip around the battlefield and an open world spaceship section provides side quests. Clank sections return to introduce a clever temporal recording mechanic providing a challenging and clever take on puzzle solving. If you’re up for it, challenge mode offers an increased difficulty and allows “Omega” level weapons.⁣ ⁣ Visuals are what I expect from a Ratchet game; vibrant, animated and full of detail. Large lush jungles, vast cyberpunk cities and sprawling underground caverns are just a few places one will visit. Particles, blaster bullets, explosions and all sorts of carnage looks especially flashy while in the thick of combat.⁣ ⁣ This time around, the musical score opted for a more orchestral approach which is unusual to me since R and C games have always had music performed by (insert name). That being said, there are some pleasing tracks within with most coming from the open world space radio stations. “Polaris Classical”, “Deep Space Jams”, “House of Synth” and “Pirate Radio” all have great songs in each sector of space.⁣ ⁣ A Crack in Time is solid and delivers a traditional Ratchet and Clank experience. It’s decent length, humor filled, and delivers a more refined game play style that has slowly evolved over the course of the series. Jimmy Eat World – Chase This Light

I’m not sure I have ever anticipated a new album with quite the furor that I anticipated Jimmy Eat World’s Chase This Light in the fall of 2007. Futures had been a game-changer for me, the album that transformed me from a budding music listener into a voracious, lifelong die-hard. As often happens when you’re young, the three years that stretched between the October 19, 2004 release of Futures and the October 16, 2007 release of Chase This Light seemed to last an eternity. (I was 13 when the former came out and 16 for the arrival of the latter.) The wait was eased a bit by the 2005 release of the Stay on My Side Tonight EP, but the dark, moody nature of those songs only made me want a full-length. An album packed of songs like “Disintegration” and “Closer”? Count me in. Chase This Light was decidedly not that record. Futures gave the band two basic paths forward. The first was to embrace the moody, late night autumnal vibe that manifested on songs like “Polaris” and “23.” That path evidently led to Stay on My Side Tonight, which was made up of songs the band had written for Futures but hadn’t finished or put on the record. The second possible path was for Jimmy Eat World to keep following their arc as a glossy studio band. They’d made Futures with Gil Norton, a well-respected rock producer known for making big, robust rock albums. Futures sounded appropriately huge, and there was some feeling—particularly in radio singles like “Pain” and “Work”—that Jimmy Eat World could be a massive radio rock band for the new millennium if they wanted to be. They could prove that “The Middle” wasn’t just a fluke hit. That path led to Chase This Light, which was and is Jimmy Eat World’s biggest-sounding, glossiest, most pop-influenced record. They brought in Butch Vig to executive produce, hired Chris Lord-Alge to handle mixing, and wrote songs like “Big Casino” and “Always Be” that had truly massive earworm choruses. It wasn’t their fault that radio rock died a swift death between the fall of 2004—when bands like Green Day and The Killers were delivering radio hit after radio hit—and the fall of 2007. The singles from Chase This Light still did relatively well: “Big Casino” went to number 3 on the rock charts and hit the “Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles” chart. But Jimmy Eat World evidently weren’t destined to become a radio band, and Chase This Light didn’t fundamentally change their fanbase or their general narrative. Monitoring the release of Chase This Light at the time, I remember that some fans were put off by the poppy sound and muscular arrangements. Gone was any trace of the rawer emo sound that had characterized Static Prevails or Clarity. Instead, Jimmy Eat World made a record that—sonically, at least—mirrored its bright, colorful album cover. For a fair chunk of the early fanbase, Chase This Light probably marked the beginning of the end for Jimmy Eat World. Such fans are easy to spot these days: they hail the trio of Clarity, Bleed American, and Futures as the band’s peak and have little use for anything that came after. Personally, I didn’t buy into any of that. I’d become a Jimmy Eat World fan with Futures. I liked their glossier sound. I mostly didn’t think Clarity was all it was cracked up to be. (I’ve since recanted on this point.) And I was at a moment in my life where I really needed a record like Chase This Light—a record that sounded anthemic and hopeful, but one where, if you actually paid attention to the lyrics, you’d hear the sharp singe of heartbreak and the bitter ache of doubt and regret. Chase This Light is the saddest Jimmy Eat World record. It doesn’t sound like it on first blush. Storming out of the gates with the propulsive “Big Casino,” Chase This Light stacks five straight anthems before hitting its first ballad. Those song sound bright and cheerful, too. “Let it Happen” has a refrain that goes “I can laugh it off/Ha ha ha ha ha ha,” while “Always Be” kicks off with finger snaps. Spend a few moments going over the lyrics, though, and these songs morph from blissful pop jams into cruelly catchy confections of heartbreak. “Big Casino,” for instance, is packed with regret and delusions of grandeur, told from the perspective of an aging dreamer who still thinks he’s going to get his big break. “I’ll accept with poise, with grace/When they draw my name from the lottery,” Jim Adkins sings in the chorus, envisioning himself as the guy whose hand everyone will want to shake. He knows it’s not happening (hence the bridge, “I have one last wish/And it’s from the heart/Just let me down/Just let me down easy”), but he’s willing to fantasize. “Always Be,” meanwhile” is a quintessential boy-loses-girl song. The first verse picks up in the middle of a late-night drive, mere hours before a relationship fractures. “I’ll force a laugh to break the silence,” Jim Adkins sings, before acknowledging that “It’s gonna get harder still/Before it gets easy.” The couple in this song has grown so distant that they can’t even communicate with each other anymore—not even when they’re sitting in the front seat of the same car on a lonely dark highway, with nothing but fake, nervous laughter to cut the tension. (Don’t ask me why they didn’t just turn on the damn radio.) “She’ll always be/A little hard for me to reach,” goes the key line in the chorus, and if it’s not the most gutting thing Jimmy Eat World ever wrote, it’s close. Don’t even get me started on “Carry You,” a song about being so hung up on a former flame that you get stuck in a feedback loop of the memories you have of them. “Here’s to living in the moment, ‘cause it passed,” Adkins sings in the chorus. The protagonist in this song can’t stop building up this old, dead relationship in his head. He’s probably built it up so much that he remembers things as being better than they ever actually were. He’s created a total fantasy based on the relationship he could have had, and he legitimately can’t let it go. The most cutting line is “Roll down the windows, let the cold air come in/Slap my face just to feel you somehow again,” because even remembering the worst moments of the relationship is apparently better to this guy than letting go and moving on. And then there’s “Dizzy,” an arguable contender for the title of “best Jimmy Eat World song” (and probably for “best song of the 2000s” as well). “Dizzy” was actually the second song I heard off Chase This Light. When this album came out, it was still a few months before I figured out how and where to watch for album leaks. My brother snagged the leak, though, and he sent me “Dizzy” via email, saying something like “You have to hear this now. I think it might be the best thing they’ve ever done.” In the weeks that it took for the album to come out and make its way to me, I played that song dozens, maybe even hundreds of times. There was an ache to it that wasn’t quite like any other song I’d ever heard. It seemed simultaneously hopeful and completely hopeless—like the relationship at the center of it might be salvageable, but also maybe not worth saving. 10 years later, “Dizzy” still hits me like a bag of bricks to the gut. While “23” is my go-to favorite JEW song, Jim Adkins has never been more on his game as a lyricist than he was on “Dizzy.” Expressions of affection that seem to be meant for someone else; desperate late night calls from a payphone, leading to nowhere but a lonely answering machine; conversations that go around and around in circles without either person saying what they really need to say. “Do you hear the conversation we talk about?” Jim Adkins asks in the explosive chorus. In the acoustic version, it’s “Do you hear the conversation we talk around?” The boy and the girl in this song, they both know it’s over, but neither has the guts to say the words. Ironically, that stubborn reluctance to tear off the band-aid ends up making everything exponentially more painful for both parties. “You said you’ve never have regrets/Jesus, is there someone yet/Who got that wish?” Jim Adkins sings on the bridge, before asking “Did you get yours, babe?” We don’t get the answer in the lyrics, but we know it’s a “No.” In the kind of relationship this song describes, no one gets out without regrets. I can still remember every moment I spent with these songs in the fall of 2007, blasting them as I drove around town with my newly-minted driver’s license, or leaning on them at the end of a few exceedingly hard days. I recall being struck by how good it felt to hear Adkins’ voice again, how listening to this album those first few times felt like reconvening and commiserating with an old friend. Even by Thanksgiving break, a month and change after the album hit the streets, I was still spinning it religiously, reveling in the hooks of “Here It Goes” or “Chase This Light” and wondering why this sound couldn’t be on the radio. These days, it’s hard for an album to take hold of my life like that. With so many records to listen to and streaming services always there to give us instant accessibility, most of us are scattered in our focus when it comes to music. It’s rare now that a new album will get even a week out of me without sharing real estate with half a dozen other LPs. Jimmy Eat World, though, is one of the few bands that can still command my undivided attention. Last year, I went on a road trip right after I got my hands on Integrity Blues. I listened to it five times in about eight hours of total driving time. Still, without Chase This Light, I don’t know if Jimmy Eat World would have ever become that band for me. Futures made me a fan, but Chase This Light immortalized them as an all-time favorite. It branded its hooks, pristine sound, and devastating lyrics onto my soul during one of the most tumultuous years of my life. In doing so, it made Jimmy Eat World a band that I could never turn away from. A few years ago, when I wrote about Futures and how it inspired my obsessive love of music, I called it “a lightning bolt to the heart.” Chase This Light may not have been the commercial success it should have been, but it did prove to me that lightning could strike the same place twice—at least when it came to my own personal connection with music. Futures kept me afloat when I was 13 and staring down the possibility that I’d have to leave my hometown and move someplace where I didn’t know anyone, right before high school started. Chase This Light came along and did the same thing when I was 16, buckling under the pressures of school, adolescence, romantic confusion, and the lead role in a high school musical where I had to bear the brunt of an emotionally abusive director. Since then, every single Jimmy Eat World album has found me at exactly the right time: Invented in the autumn where I navigated through the euphoria of young love and the loneliness of a long distance relationship; Damage as I wrapped up my final weeks of college and bid farewell to my friends and the town we’d called home for four years; and Integrity Blues as a chaotic election year and a fractured world had me yearning for the simpler angst of my youth. For some Jimmy Eat World fans, Chase This Light was the end of the line.
