Waiting for Henry’s appointment this evening and two terriers came barrelling out of the consult room on flexis, very much not controlled by the owners, and swarmed Henry and me in the waiting room. Poor boy was spooked and couldn’t get away since he was backed into the corner. I asked them to give us space because he doesn’t like other dogs in his face and one of the owners commented ‘Awh, sorry, didn’t see you there’ while they did nothing to pull their dogs away??

Thankfully Henry recovered alright and was happy taking treats from me/ignoring the terrier Staring and crying at him, but my god why are people so clueless. They finally pulled that one back, but while the other owner was paying, their one ran straight back up to us :))

Henry did really well though and felt brave enough to go up to it and sniff it before they got it away again. But then the first one started saying ‘oh do you want to say hi too??’ to their dog. Like, my guy, I told you he’s shy/doesn’t like dogs in his face. Do Not push it. I got Henry doing ‘paws up’ on the bench, and they finally gave up.

Note to self, Henry goes up on the bench to start with next time…

Stray Thoughts and Rambling about the Story from Oreca Battle Chapter 6: "The Desolation of The Poisonous Swamp"

Following the previous ask about the lore from each chapter, I suddenly wanted to share some lore about Chapter 6 and New Chapter 6 that I learnt from reading Demizu Posuka's Oreca Battle manga, some tidbits from the Japanese fanwiki, and some fan theories I heard and read about from Pixiv and twitter

Please do take caution since this post is mostly based on speculations and fan theories from other fans, and along with the fact that EN localization for any other New Chapter series after New Ch. 3 doesn't exist

There might be wrong speculation, wrong character names spelling, and such Please proceed with caution, thank you!

So, let's start from the established main story of what started Chapter 6

Chapter 6 story started with the appearance of Demon Emperor Tokaji who wanted invade the world of Oreca by spreading his poison throughout the land with his army of the undead

And then comes our protagonist, Shining Guardian Dia who have been blessed by the light from Heaven She went unto the journey to fight against Tokaji to save her homeland from being overrun by the army of undead

Even though the fight have ended with Dia's victory, the aftermath of the damage from the poison that Tokaji spreads on the land are very severe and left the world of Oreca in dire state

Because of this, the Heaven sent two angels to observe and help clean the land from the poison that are spreading, and to decide what is needed to be done to what have happened These angels are Clay, our main protagonist from New Ch. 6 and Camael, his best friend

And this is the start of New Chapter 6

Along their journey, Clay and Camael start to have differing opinions regarding the fate of the land and taking on different paths

Clay and Dia is on the side of who wants find a way to save the poisonous swamp without needing to sacrifice the remaining denizen

While Camael is on the side of King of Light Elysium, who wants to "purify" everything on the land back into nothingness

It is also stated on the JP Fanwiki that Elysium is actually the one who granted the power of Light to Dia on the beginning of Chapter 6

And from this conflict, we finally come to the final fight that will decide on the fate of this land

According to someone's theory, Clay and Dia are fighting for the sake of the remaining people who are still alive on the poisonous swamp, and their victory should've been able to let the people live on

Regardless of who came out as victorious from this battle, it doesn't change the fate of the swamp because of how severe the poison that have already spread throughout

And so, Chapter 6 ended with the inevitable fate of the swamp from being purified into a desert

But even after the desertification, there are people who are still living and surviving on the land Perhaps the remaining people who live in this desert is the result of Clay's and Dia's victory?

But even within the desert, a new threat looming over their fate as a demon king appears and imprison a lot of warriors of the land

And thus start the story of Chapter 2, following the adventure of Gunner Dartan and Jeanne to fight against Demon King Saqqara's tyranny

Aand, that is the end of my personal interpretation of the story that take place in Chapter 6, New Chapter 6, and their connection to Chapter 2

There are also the side story of Infinite Musketeer Dartan trying to defeat Demon Tyrant Abusir to free the people on Chapter 2 from Saqqara's future tyranny, and the side story of Saint Marshall Hughes and High Cleric Cliff in trying to find Sage Solon to fight against Demon Emperor Tokaji (this story is depicted in the Vol. 1 of Oreca Battle Monsters Adventure)

I know this was pretty lengthy, the story is just that complex after all- And that is also the reason why I actually really love New Chapter 6 despite the chapter not having localization version yet-

If y'all do open source people can add/make shit and really lean into the "customizable" brand. You could even market that a little. A build kit, premade stuff, etc.

I think things use to be more customizable anyway. Like lean into yee old neigh myspace level stuff, I bet people would lose their minds (in a good way) with like cool blog wallpaper and stuff. Really hone in on that individuality.

I could go on. Yes and your site's current direction friends, and don't make it into something it's not, which everyone else seems to be dying doing anyway. That's what I'd say.

People come to Tumblr to immerse themselves in this culture, making it essential for us to ensure a seamless connection between people and content. 

To guarantee Tumblr’s continued success, we’ve got to prioritize fostering that seamless connection between people and content. This involves attracting and retaining new users and creators, nurturing their growth, and encouraging frequent engagement with the platform.

Our Guiding Principles

To enhance Tumblr’s usability, we must address these core guiding principles.

Expand the ways new users can discover and sign up for Tumblr.

Provide high-quality content with every app launch.

Facilitate easier user participation in conversations.

Retain and grow our creator base.

Create patterns that encourage users to keep returning to Tumblr.

Improve the platform’s performance, stability, and quality.

Below is a deep dive into each of these principles.

Principle 1: Expand the ways new users can discover and sign up for Tumblr.

Tumblr has a “top of the funnel” issue in converting non-users into engaged logged-in users. We also have not invested in industry standard SEO practices to ensure a robust top of the funnel. The referral traffic that we do get from external sources is dispersed across different pages with inconsistent user experiences, which results in a missed opportunity to convert these users into regular Tumblr users. For example, users from search engines often land on pages within the blog network and blog view—where there isn’t much of a reason to sign up. 

We need to experiment with logged-out tumblr.com to ensure we are capturing the highest potential conversion rate for visitors into sign-ups and log-ins. We might want to explore showing the potential future user the full breadth of content that Tumblr has to offer on our logged-out pages. We want people to be able to easily understand the potential behind Tumblr without having to navigate multiple tabs and pages to figure it out. Our current logged-out explore page does very little to help users understand “what is Tumblr.” which is a missed opportunity to get people excited about joining the site.

Actions & Next Steps

Improving Tumblr’s search engine optimization (SEO) practices to be in line with industry standards.

Experiment with logged out tumblr.com to achieve the highest conversion rate for sign-ups and log-ins, explore ways for visitors to “get” Tumblr and entice them to sign up.

Principle 2: Provide high-quality content with every app launch.

We need to ensure the highest quality user experience by presenting fresh and relevant content tailored to the user’s diverse interests during each session. If the user has a bad content experience, the fault lies with the product.

The default position should always be that the user does not know how to navigate the application. Additionally, we need to ensure that when people search for content related to their interests, it is easily accessible without any confusing limitations or unexpected roadblocks in their journey.

Being a 15-year-old brand is tough because the brand carries the baggage of a person’s preconceived impressions of Tumblr. On average, a user only sees 25 posts per session, so the first 25 posts have to convey the value of Tumblr: it is a vibrant community with lots of untapped potential. We never want to leave the user believing that Tumblr is a place that is stale and not relevant.

Deliver great content each time the app is opened.

Make it easier for users to understand where the vibrant communities on Tumblr are. 

Improve our algorithmic ranking capabilities across all feeds. 

Principle 3: Facilitate easier user participation in conversations.

Part of Tumblr’s charm lies in its capacity to showcase the evolution of conversations and the clever remarks found within reblog chains and replies. Engaging in these discussions should be enjoyable and effortless.

Unfortunately, the current way that conversations work on Tumblr across replies and reblogs is confusing for new users. The limitations around engaging with individual reblogs, replies only applying to the original post, and the inability to easily follow threaded conversations make it difficult for users to join the conversation.

Address the confusion within replies and reblogs.

Improve the conversational posting features around replies and reblogs. 

Allow engagements on individual replies and reblogs.

Make it easier for users to follow the various conversation paths within a reblog thread. 

Remove clutter in the conversation by collapsing reblog threads. 

Explore the feasibility of removing duplicate reblogs within a user’s Following feed. 

Principle 4: Retain and grow our creator base.

Creators are essential to the Tumblr community. However, we haven’t always had a consistent and coordinated effort around retaining, nurturing, and growing our creator base.  

Being a new creator on Tumblr can be intimidating, with a high likelihood of leaving or disappointment upon sharing creations without receiving engagement or feedback. We need to ensure that we have the expected creator tools and foster the rewarding feedback loops that keep creators around and enable them to thrive.

The lack of feedback stems from the outdated decision to only show content from followed blogs on the main dashboard feed (“Following”), perpetuating a cycle where popular blogs continue to gain more visibility at the expense of helping new creators. To address this, we need to prioritize supporting and nurturing the growth of new creators on the platform.

It is also imperative that creators, like everyone on Tumblr, feel safe and in control of their experience. Whether it be an ask from the community or engagement on a post, being successful on Tumblr should never feel like a punishing experience.

Actions & Next Steps

Get creators’ new content in front of people who are interested in it. 

Improve the feedback loop for creators, incentivizing them to continue posting.

Build mechanisms to protect creators from being spammed by notifications when they go viral.

Expand ways to co-create content, such as by adding the capability to embed Tumblr links in posts.

Principle 5: Create patterns that encourage users to keep returning to Tumblr.

Push notifications and emails are essential tools to increase user engagement, improve user retention, and facilitate content discovery. Our strategy of reaching out to you, the user, should be well-coordinated across product, commercial, and marketing teams.

Our messaging strategy needs to be personalized and adapt to a user’s shifting interests. Our messages should keep users in the know on the latest activity in their community, as well as keeping Tumblr top of mind as the place to go for witty takes and remixes of the latest shows and real-life events.  

Most importantly, our messages should be thoughtful and should never come across as spammy.  

Actions & Next Steps

Conduct an audit of our messaging strategy.

Address the issue of notifications getting too noisy; throttle, collapse or mute notifications where necessary.  

Identify opportunities for personalization within our email messages. 

Test what the right daily push notification limit is. 

Send emails when a user has push notifications switched off.

Principle 6: Performance, stability and quality.

The stability and performance of our mobile apps have declined. There is a large backlog of production issues, with more bugs created than resolved over the last 300 days. If this continues, roughly one new unresolved production issue will be created every two days. Apps and backend systems that work well and don't crash are the foundation of a great Tumblr experience. Improving performance, stability, and quality will help us achieve sustainable operations for Tumblr.

Improve performance and stability: deliver crash-free, responsive, and fast-loading apps on Android, iOS, and web.

Improve quality: deliver the highest quality Tumblr experience to our users. 

Move faster: provide APIs and services to unblock core product initiatives and launch new features coming out of Labs.

Ive never used any kind of apple computer before, for personal use at least, but I recently decided to bid on a 2009 Mac Pro in an auction and managed to win it for $130. Thought it would just be a fun project to figure out what it could still do and have at least some kind of computer that made me feel like it did when I was a kid, but it turns out that thing is still a solid computer.

I've got some CPU upgrades to do, might add a wifi card to it, and have to add better/new hard drives, and need to learn how to use a mac, but I am excited. I've got hella plans in my head that need to be put on paper, and a ton of research to do as well which is gonna be fun.

Guess I'll finally use my tumblr as an actual blog and post updates as I go. I know it'll be less expensive then building a PC (which was my original goal) so I shouldn't really need to slow down on this project due to parts costs. Just gotta hope the ADHD enjoys the project for an extended period of time.

Also if you happen to know anything about upgrading this or have any helpful links, please share the knowledge with me. I would love to learn more about this computer from working on it and from any kind of help anyone might have.

McMansion Hell urges all New Yorkers to Rank Zohran Mamdani #1 for Mayor of NYC

I know I am just a blog about ugly houses but I want to say something important here: the ruling class in this country does not want you to have affordable housing. They don't want you to have clean, reliable public transportation. They don't want you to have access to groceries you can afford. If something bad happens to you, they don't care if you live or die. If you lose your home, they will hole up in their penthouses, McMansions, and mommy-bought apartments and tell you it's your fault -- but it's not. It is theirs. Everything from budget cuts to rent hikes, is their fault, their way of ensuring that the city becomes a place made up solely of people like themselves.

Zohran Mamdani is the only high profile candidate I've seen in my narrow, millennial lifetime running for any position -- least of all the mayor of the biggest city in the country -- on a platform of decommodification in terms of access to food, housing and transportation. City-run grocery stores would ensure that food stays affordable because there is no profit motive. While some are critical of his policy of fare-free transportation (as opposed to spending the same amount of money improving services), given the amount of policing involved in watching the fareboxes, it's something I'm coming more and more around to.

In demanding a rent freeze, Zohran is one of the only politicians able to articulate a direct plan for keeping people in their homes at a time when rent is skyrocketing with no end in sight. Zohran is one of a limited few in this miserable, cowardly country who are willing to speak out for the rights of Palestinians being murdered en masse by Israel. A vote for Zohran is a vote for the idea that better things are possible and, if you ask me, I think we live in such dire times that we've begun to forget this fundamental truth: things do not have to be like this. We do not have to live under the jackboot of privatization and exploitation forever. That choice, however, is up to us.

I am forever skeptical of the power of the ballot box to enact lasting change, especially in recent years. In fact, I am the most skeptical of electoralism I have ever been. However, why is it that the right can use what little sovereignty and enfranchisement is available to us to enact sweeping, if devastating changes, and yet, when the opportunity presents itself to the left, all we hear is that such things are no better than pissing in the wind? The answer to this question, of course, is that the ruling class is perfectly content with a party that hinders rather than ushers in change. Zohran may be using the sclerotic party system we've been doomed to inhabit, but despite these limitations his candidacy has surged immensely in the last few months, and the momentum of the people is on his side. This may be one of the last chances wherein one can attempt a truly progressive campaign like this.

Now that things are heating up, the ruling class, the backers of Andrew Cuomo, an abuser of women and a man responsible for the untold deaths of the elderly because he valued profits over their lives so early on in the pandemic, will stop at nothing to make sure that Zohran Mamdani does not win, that things stay the same. That the rent goes up, that the grocery prices continue to explode, that New York City becomes the playground of the rich and famous at the expense of everyone else. The party will try to intervene in undemocratic ways just like they did with Bernie Sanders in the 2020 primary. There will be untold lies and accusations, the press will abandon what few journalistic obligations they still abide by, and it will get ugly. There are even rumors that Cuomo will run as an independent even if he loses the primary, which, to be honest, isn't a bad tactic -- he's just the worst guy to be using it.

I realize this post may be annoying to some (hell, I myself live in Chicago), and I'm sure there's some rightful criticism for my not having used my blog like this before. (However, for those of you who don't know, I usually write about all manner of politics in my column at The Nation!) Time to talk an unnecessary amount about floors!

Episode 6 of Dungeon Meshi was produced in collaboration with a smaller studio, Enishiya - and it went way harder than I expected, for being made up of two relatively simple and self contained stories focusing on one character each.

And you can really see how those extra resources meant the animators could give full focus to both halves of the episode. Let's take a look at one piece that stole the show.

The first half was handled primarily by episode director/storyboard artist Keita Nagahara and co-animation director Hirotoshi (or Hiroaki? [1]) Arai. It's actually kinda insane how much of this section can be attributed to these two.

But the real star of the show is the second half, Chilchuck vs the mimic, led by co-animation director Toya Ooshima in his first animation director role for TV anime!

And the biggest aspect that knocked my dang boots off was something that's very consistent with Ooshima's style: background animation!

By animating the backgrounds rather than using painted still images, Ooshima and the team of other similarly skilled animators are able to create these beautiful dynamic camera movements that wouldn't be possible otherwise. Like these cuts by Takeshi Maenami where the camera becomes an expressive part of the scene, zipping forward and backward, and tilting to emphasize the speed of this murderous hermit crab. (Maenami's style is also very recognizable here - snappy timing and quick camera movements)

Or this cut by the incredible Kaito Tomioka which cleverly combines a traditional background for the walls with a fully animated floor. The level of detail in these tiles is just completely insane, and used to great effect with this wide, diagonal angle, and the way the camera tentatively drifts forward before reversing direction, and the tiles blur out as it speeds up.

I don't think I'm the only one caught off guard by how much they full-assed this little side story, but it was a pleasant surprise!
