-BEGINNING LORE/SUN SAGA-

In the beginning, most everyone lived in Item’s (@item-shoppe) basement, eventually escaping one way or another to Nefarious’s (@nefarious-exclam) tower or to set up their own place.

I, Mini, came along through anon. An anon (a different one) had supposedly been quoting the lyrics to a song, but none of us knew the song and took it seriously. So we killed the sun. How? Well Nef tried (and failed) to shoot it with a water gun, and one of his gimmick posts was shrinking someone down to the size of an ant. So, if they’re able to do both of those things, I figured “Why can’t he do both on the sun?”

I sent in an ask, on anon (before I had become a gimmick blog. I was wanting to be one at this point but didn’t know what my gimmick would be) telling him to shrink the sun down to the size of an ant and shoot it with a water gun. It worked, the sun was extinguished, and it all went dark in the universe. And cold.

After figuring out what gimmick I wanted to be, I quickly made a profile picture for the blog and made the blog itself, now being able to interact with everything easily. The first interaction I had was with Vance (@advancement-made), and they asked me why I would do that. I didn’t think it would actually work, but it did and I have been advised to not underestimate Nef again. I was also forgiven.

Meanwhile, the Ice People had come out of the ice caves (looking at you, @solidwater05. I know what you did. /silly) and were attacking Nefarious, trying to get him to become an Ice Person as well. Nefarious uses a lot of mana during this period of time, trying to fight them off. Also Vance and Glitches (@glitches-and-bugs) can glow, we found out.

Boss (@bossfight-messages) ends up making a deal with the Ice People, telling them that they’ll be an Ice Person if they are given blankets. This deal was never completed, however, as Boss never turned into an Ice Person. Guess it’s too late for that now, though.

In the meantime, Vance and I forged a plan to relight the sun by making a large bonfire and throwing the sun in it, since Nef still had the sun in their hands. Small fires went out pretty quickly, but we figured a large bonfire would take a while to go out. Vance ended up leaving to get some wood, whilst I left to get something to light the wood with. I found some matches, before the Ice People found me.

The Ice People tried convincing me to join them, eventually telling me about how they are lonely and just want a friend. I ended up breaking, and they infected me, turning me into an Ice Person with them.

Before I could do anything as an Ice Person (infecting others, hiding away in the Ice Caves, etc.), the sun returned to the sky, having been re-lit. Normally, I would’ve melted since I was ice, but it was night-time. So I still had time.

Status (@status-updates) ended up watching as everyone panicked about me being an Ice Person, as he sat on a thawing machine. Nefarious ended up making a bargain with Status for the thawing machine, and when Status agreed on the price, he took 50 extra gold from Nefarious for renting the thawing machine. Nef used the thawing machine on me, thawing away the ice. I was back to normal, and everything was right and good in Exclamania once more. Well, except for Nef. Especially since he was angry at Status for swindling them.

Nef also gave me one of his cloaks, since I was still quite cold after having been frozen for about an hour. They also revealed that he knew the Ice People once. This seems to be a pretty big part of both Nefarious and Select (@character-selecton) lore.

If anyone else has anything to add to the Beginning Lore/Sun Saga lore, feel free to add to it!

The Interrobang War was ended by Yuri in this timeline, yet another Minerro win.

New energy-form alien species present in Exclamania, as per usual. Made by the same creator behind John and Genny, Quietus, so you know shit's going to get wild eventually.

Prof and Art are currently journeying together, and, unrelated, a local vampire is discovering blood is in extremely limited supply among the Exclamanians.

Adonis is active earlier than Tumblr's Exclamania, and while we don't have Character-Select to pull a steven universe, we do have toxic yaoi in the form of bug hunter Redacted.

Redacted is also a pro-devs bug hunter this time.

We also have an overworked office worker of some sort that also works for the devs, and their sentient piece of malware. They hate each other so much that it is completely unreasonable, and it's a miracle either of them get anything done. Same creator as Unskilled, btw.

The Serotonin Patch is also in play way sooner too, having affected Mini. This was reversed by Terro having to say some utterly heartbreaking shit to combat the Serotonin Effects, but they did get a happy ending for this arc!

Slizard got fucking mauled an inch from death by a werewolf/spider/thing And Hecx got mildly injured in the same encounter. The werewolf woman is also a Quietus character.

One of the energy forms is speaking to a newly awakened Exclamanian, Named Leporis, who thinks it's their brain(it isn't), and they beat shit out of slizard. That poor sludge man cannot catch a break.

Leporis, and Redacted are currently investigating a mysterious gleaming tower, and had just started fighting each other as of the last writing session.

Transformers: Universe

Hello Tumblr! Here’s my entry for Transformers: Universe. As I mentioned last time, I’m working on something and I’m still trying to figure out the mechanics of it. Next week will likely be an essay outside of the main project. Enjoy!

    Transformers Universe(2008) is the second line largely focused on giving Generation 1 characters updated figures. Universe continues many traditions established by Classics, but uses its larger scale to explore. The line was much larger than Classics, and featured significantly greater diversity. Unlike Classics, Universe featured many figures in most of the size classes it featured, and expanded its offerings into the Ultra size class. Similarly, Universe homaged characters from parts of the franchise other than Generation 1, featuring several characters from Beast Wars and even one from Armada. However, Universe also drew much inspiration from Classics, and is in many ways a spiritual successor to it, as well as the first Transformers Universe line, which occurred in 2003. Transformers Universe represents an evolution of the concepts first introduced in Classics, often influenced by design practices from the wildly successful Movie lines. Universe is also a moment where HasTak were still refining their relationship to the concept of a Generation 1 homage line, and exploring how such a concept could be executed in practice. 

        Much like Classics, Universe featured an assortment of legends class figures. Again like Classics, most of these were redecos of Cybertron figures.(Jackpot) However, unlike Classics, six Generation 1 characters, namely several mini-vehicles, received new molds at this price point.(Jackpot)

    Universe featured a significantly larger proportion of new mold deluxes than Classics had. As the Wiki notes, it was not only the number of figures that changed, but their engineering.(Jackpot) Universe was the first CHUG line released in the wake of the live action Transformers film.(TheLastGherkin)  As such, many of the engineering changes that line pioneered are visible in its new molds. Where Classics had demonstrated an Armada or even Beast Wars era tendency towards direct approaches to transformation schemes and large tracts of solid, unjointed plastic, Universe explored more joints, more panels, and less intuitive transformation schemes. Figures such as Ironhide and Nissan 350Z mold feature intricate paneling and signature Movie-style backpacks of vehicle mode shell. Galvatron features an unintuitive transformation scheme that rivals RID Sideburn for getting in its own way and baffling complexity.(Peaugh) 

This is not to say that all Universe toys are infamously intricate. Rather, the use of these somewhat extreme examples is meant to illustrate that HasTak designers were beginning to shift away from more linear approaches to problem solving, which addressed specific transformation features with specific solutions and left large chunks of plastic elsewhere. In a post-Movie era, they began to move towards a more holistic approach, where every part of the figure serves a purpose, and is jointed or molded to accommodate that purpose. For example, the Nissan mold is not notoriously complex, but the lower legs are still molded to be hollow to house the upper legs in vehicle mode, in contrast to Classics Astrotrain’s remarkably solid legs. 

Universe’s expanded range of Deluxes allowed it to homage things outside of Generation 1. In particular, the exceptionally popular Beast Wars and Armada lines received new figures of central characters.(Jackpot) In particular, Beast Wars characters Cheetor and Dinobot received new figures, as did the Armada character Hot Shot.(Jackpot) This is of particular note for several reasons. First, it is somewhat unusual, although not unheard of, for non-G1 figures to receive nostalgia figures. Indeed, no other non-G1 homage figures would be produced in a CHUG line until 2010’s Reveal the Shield Voyager Lugnut, a full two years later.(Spin-out) Secondly, it is remarkable that Armada should receive a direct homage. There was significant precedent for Beast Wars homages, for example the Beast Wars 10th Anniversary toyline and the BotCon 2006 set. (SuperRobbie) Moreover, Beast Wars was, at this point, more than 10 years old, whereas Armada had ended a mere 6 years previous.(Interrobang) 

However, while the suddenness of the homage is somewhat remarkable, the fact that Armada in particular was recognized with a new mold is unsurprising. Beast Wars, Armada, and arguably the Movie franchise all represent moments of tremendous popularity for Transformers.(ItsWalky, Armada;Transformers;Steve-o)  As was noted earlier, non-G1 homage figures are comparatively rare. However, of the few that exist, a huge number come from Armada, Beast wars or, as with Studio Series, the Movie franchise.(ItsWalky, Armada;Steve-o; Ikkad) Universe Hot Shot marks the first entry into what would become one of the more homaged lines of the franchise. 

    One of the notable spiritual links that exists between Universe and Classics is the Classics Seeker Mold. As was discussed in the Classics essay, the Classics Seeker mold is the single most reissued mold in the history of the brand, as far as redecos into new characters are concerned. This storied lineage begins here; The Seeker mold was rereleased in Universe, once as Starscream, and once as the until-this-release obscure character Acid Storm.(Jackpot) 

    Another point of continuity between Classics and Universe is the Deluxe Octane figure. Other than Classics Astrotrain, Deluxe Octane represents the only time in the history of the brand that a triple changer was attempted at the deluxe price point.(Autobus Prime) All subsequent toys of this kind were at the Voyager size class or above. This arguably represents HasTak still learning the ropes of this sort of CHUG line; triple changers are easier to pull off successfully at the voyager price point, where there are more joints and more plastic available to create more convincing alternate modes. These sorts of transitional ideas are visible at other points throughout the Universe line.  

    Universe’s Voyager class offerings were almost exclusively redecos of Cybertron figures, with one redeco of a Classics figure and one new mold. Remarkably, almost all of these redecos represent either comparatively obscure existing characters, like Blades or Dropshot, or characters for whom this is their only appearance, like Heavy Load.(Jackpot) Of particular note is the reuse of Cybertron Leobreaker as Leo Prime, another name for the Japanese character Leo Convoy.(Derik) This figure contributes to Universe continuing another trend of Classics, namely that of making references to obscure characters and figures. These  references are not necessarily intended for children. This can also be seen with HasTak’s use of the name Treadbolt for their redeco of Classics Jetfire. The name is a reference to a G1 Micromaster released in 1990; it is unlikely that any children looking at toys in 2008 understood the alusion.(Rolobolon)

    Universe Inferno is the only new mold Voyager figure. Like his compatriots at the Deluxe class, Inferno uses paneling to achieve a realistic vehicle mode. He is also somewhat chunky, echoing, especially in his legs and forearms, the uninterrupted plastic characteristic of Classics. 

    Universe was the only CHUG line to feature toys in the Ultra class price point. Classics only featured voyager figures because the line was comparatively small, and subsequent lines like 2010 and Generations did not feature Ultra figures, because by that point the size class had been discontinued.(Singularity) There were three new mold Ultra figures, for Onslaught, Silverbolt, and, strangely enough, Powerglide. These figures all included electronic lights and sounds.(Jackpot)

    Continuing the pattern of obscure references, Powerglide features a small heart underneath his chest panel. This references an episode of the G1 cartoon, specifically “The Girl Who Loved Powerglide.(S.H.I.E.L.D Agent47) Onslaught features a particularly interesting reference; rather than to a specific cartoon or figure, he references a specific member of the Transformers fan community, Monzo.(Dr.Spengler) This marks a new kind of reference in Transformers, call outs to individuals involved either with the production of the figures or their consumption. 

    The Universe line piggybacked off of the Movie line in two other specific ways. Firstly, it continued the Robot Heroes figures first established by the movie.(Jackpot) These are small figures of iconic characters, sold in two packs, with limited articulation.(M Sipher) It also featured a great many retailer exclusive figures.(Jackpot) These extended the run of the line significantly.(Jackpot)

    Like Classics before it, toys produced under the Universe banner were not hyper screen accurate realizations of characters from the G1 cartoon, but updates of them, with better articulation and more modern alternate modes. As with Classics, many of these alternate modes are realistic, which, as the Wiki notes, served to bridge the gap between the Movie line and the ROTF line in terms of having realistic vehicles on store shelves.(Jackpot) 

    On the whole, Universe represents a continuation of elements established by Classics, while the greater scope of the line and new engineering techniques allowed it to be more experimental. Like Classics, Universe featured many arcane references, a plethora of redecos, and realistic, modernized vehicle modes. Unlike Classics, Universe featured a much greater number of new mold deluxes and a much greater diversity of characters. It also learned from Movie engineering practices, and began to design figures so that every part of the figure participated in all of the modes. During Universe, HasTak were still unwilling to commit to an entirely nostalgia based line, as evidenced by many of the redecos of Cybertron toys, and the presence of the Legends and Robot Heroes figures. Universe represents a natural outgrowth from Classics that evolved in the context of a post-Movie engineering world.

Joshua Abbott has written A Guide to Modernism in Metro-Land to highlight the modernist architecture in the northwestern suburbs of London. Here he selects ten of the most interesting examples.

A Guide to Modernism in Metro-Land focuses on 200 modern buildings that were built in London's northwestern suburbs, which sprung up in the 1920s and 30s along the route of the Metropolitan Railway, much of which became the Metropolitan London Underground line.

Abbott began documenting the area's architecture while studying at the Harrow campus of the University of Westminster, as he noticed that the occasional modern buildings stood out within the largely traditional, residential suburbs.

"The default style of Metro-land was historical, taking influence from the Tudor and Elizabethan eras," explained Abbott.

"The modernist and art deco buildings that also appeared in this area, often cinemas, tube stations and schools, catch the eye with their use of concrete, steel and glass, especially when contrasted against the half-timber and tiles used elsewhere."

Abbott hopes that the book will draw attention to the city's modern architecture beyond the brutalist highlights in central London.

"The recent interest in brutalism has seen people concentrate on the big beasts in central and east London; the National Theatre, the Barbican Estate and Balfron Tower."

"I hope the guide can show that there is a great wealth of modernist buildings throughout London, especially in the suburbs, and a variety of different modernist styles including the International style, art deco, festival style, high-tech, brutalism and more."

Below Abbott selects ten building from across Metro-land that are worth making a trip to see.

East Finchley Station by Charles Holden and Bucknell & Ellis, 1942

This Northern Line station is perched on a viaduct next to the Great West Road. From street level its not one of Charles Holden's best designs, but the platform level is a joy.

When passing through the station on my commute, I sometimes used to hop off the train and wait for the next, just so I could enjoy the glass staircase towers and Archer statue.

Arena and Empire Pool by Owen Williams, 1934

Now better known for hosting the X-Factor finals and overshadowed by new buildings, including Hopkins Architects' Brent Civic Centre, this former sporting arena was Owen Williams' great leap forward towards "The New Objectivity".

The reinforced concrete roof has a 72-meter span and is supported by brutal-looking exterior fins and boxy water towers.

Hoover Factory by Wallis, Gilbert and Partners, 1935

Somewhat derided in the architectural press when completed, the Hoover Factory has become a fixture on Western Avenue, with its Egyptian-derived colour scheme livening up many a dull car journey.

The rear production area is now a supermarket and the front art deco offices were recently converted into apartments by Interrobang.

Enfield Civic Centre by Eric Broughton & Associates, 1957-75

One of many civic centres built around London in the 1960s and 70s, this scheme encapsulates the post war change from small-scale Scandinavian modernism to uncompromising Brutalism, with an evident change in style over the 20 year project.

Unfortunately, many civic centres have now been demolished to make way for new housing.

Highpoint I & II by Berthold Lubetkin & Tecton, 1938

An icon of early British modernism, this twin apartment block was originally intended for workers from Sigmund Gestetner's factory in Tottenham.

Berthold Lubetkin's final design was deemed too good for that, and now its apartments looking out onto central London change hands for millions of pounds.

Rayners Lane Grosvenor by FE Bromige, 1936

A former cinema, now the Zoroastrian centre, has a facade supposedly designed to resemble an elephant's trunk.

This building, along with Rayners Lane station across the road, was one of the reasons I started the modernism in Metro-land project, a piece of exuberant art deco amongst the brick and half-timber.

97-101 Park Avenue by Connell, Ward & Lucas, 1936

Designers of probably the first piece of modernism in Metro-land – the High and Over house in Amersham – Connell, Ward & Lucas intended these three houses to be the start of a modernist village.

Ruislip was not ready for that, but we still have this small slice of Le Corbusier in suburbia.

23 Strand on the Green by Timothy Rendle, 1966

This slim 1960s house is slipped into an 18th-century terrace alongside the Thames at Chiswick.

The design is perfectly of its time, from the steel spiral staircase inside to the pop art concrete relief number 23 on the outside.

Parkleys Estate by Eric Lyons, 1956

One of Eric Lyons' earliest and best Span developments, this estate near Ham Common features flats, maisonettes and shops, spread around mature trees and hedges, allowing the estate to flow and be part of its neighbourhood.

The Span style would prove hugely influential in mass house design over the next twenty years.

Askett Green by Peter Aldington, 1961-3

A reimagining of the traditional cottage, this house in Buckinghamshire has a long sloping roof and an almost blank face to the street.

This building was the furthest point out from London I visited for the book, and despite the rain and patchy transport links, it was well worth the effort.

Hille House by Erno Goldfinger, 1961

An instantly recognisable Ernö Goldfinger building, complete with trademark cantilevered box with coloured glass.

Built as an office, showroom and factory complex for the Hille furniture company, who were patrons of modernist designers with offices in Piccadilly by Peter Moro, and designers such as Robin Day and Fred Scott on their staff.

Oy, was it really that recently? The last three years have taken 900 years. And yeah... Maggie Stiefvater’s post about it was a Really Bad Look, and iirc that was the environment that spawned the beginning of the batshit “Keep YA Kind”* concern-trolling thing (yep, also 2015) that was mainly used to silence girls and women and people of color whenever the four white cishet men in YA fucked up between 2015 and 2018, when it finally publicly came out that most of them were, yk, fucking up because they’re legitimately horrible people and maybe the people calling them out should have been taken seriously.

* The other notable “why the fuck is this happening???? why is HE the one getting the sympathy here?????” events from “Keep YA Kind,” which, listen, I would bet you anything that it was very very nearly called “Keep Kidlit Kind” until the only person involved with 1/4 of a braincell managed to realize the acronym on their Twitter handle looked REALL BAD:

Andrew Smith, a straight white adult man, says out loud with his human adult man mouth, that he knows he can’t write female characters well and relies on fetishization and stereotypes because he never really met a girl until his daughter (??? SO WHAT IS YOUR WIFE, ANDREW? CHOPPED LIVER?) and, being as that is Bullshit and also his books were also being lauded as though they were Infinite fucking Jest Jr. even though the interview in question was for a book in which mutant grasshoppers take over the earth and a teenage boy gets trapped in a bunker with a teenage girl who eventually has to git to birthin’ babies she doesn’t want and isn’t medically prepared to have safely For The Good Of Humanity, he’s called out.

He’s called out mostly on a technical, writing level at first, even! Like, “Here’s how to write a female character: you write a fully considered, well-rounded character. They’re a girl.” And Andrew Smith FLIPS HIS SHIT, does some op-ed about how his mother used to beat him so he can’t see girls as people, and makes his twitter private. The “Keep YA Kind” sycophants support him HARD.

And then this happens to pop up on a mysterious Twitter that just HAPPENS to start while HIS twitter’s offline...

NOTE: Jay Asher, author of 13 Reasons Why, was literally dropped from his publisher and SCWBI for being a sexual predator. So like, I don’t think he was bullied, I think his predation was being remarked upon. Like, idk, maybe that he was being called creepy or sth idk idk idk

And then when A.S. decided to unsockpuppet to promote his next book, The Alex Crow, which is about mutant crows and a bunker or whatever:

The “asshole” in specific that Andrew Smith was calling an asshole was delightful human being and fellow author Kate Messner, who, coincidentally, was one of the victims to come out against Lemony Snicket’s sexual harrassment, so she’s had a BULLSHIT time just trying to do her JOB of being an author while female.

Which leads to Tommy Wallach! All-around fucknut! Whose major interest seems to be being That Guy In Philosophy 101 Who Always Has To Be Devil’s Advocate, Even Though No One Asked, and has a deeply vested interest in making sure that teenage girl readers -- who are his target audience, because he chose to write YA, as an adult man who made a choice in what he wrote and chose to make it YA, and not, like, any of the hundreds of genres that AREN’T largely written about and for teenage girls, yk -- know that teenage girls are Dumb. Victoria Schwab actually wrote an essay for YA Books Central about the incessant problem that IS/WAS Tommy Wallach called “We Need To Talk About Tommy” back in -- you guessed it! -- 2016, but it’s offline now and I’m not going to go Wayback it rn.

I’m just going to copypasta YAinterrobang’s Wallach timeline because he’s exhausting, he reminds me of undergrad.

Wallach’s continual pattern of behavior is worth discussing, especially in the context of sexism in YA and the continual marginalization of “diverse” voices in the community despite the efforts of the We Need Diverse Books movement.

Wallach’s problematic behavior runs back over a year, starting with a defense of Andrew Smith where he ignores the opinions of author and advocate Tessa Gratton in favor of a dictionary definition of sexism. (Andrew Smith’s behavior and the fallout around his statements have, of course, already been documented on YA Interrobang in “The Curious Case of Andrew Smith, Twitter & sexism.”) Wallach postures that women are inherently “other” from men, accuses Gratton of “gin[ning]up the controversy” and explains that he is a feminist because he was “raised by a single working mother and she’s still my best friend in the world.”

Fast forward to later that year. Author Justina Ireland takes to Twitter to discuss a book where she feels the black character is self-hating. Ireland, being black herself, is asked about the book in question; she says that it’s Wallach’s debut novel We All Looked Up. Though Wallach is not tagged, he swoops into the conversation and demands Ireland provide proof that his character Anita is self-hating before claiming that author Dhonielle Clayton, who is also black, is friends with him and “engaged” with him on the issues in the book.

Clayton later stated publicly that she had not done any sensitivity reading on We All Looked Up.

What brought Wallach’s behavior to the attention of the YA world as a whole came this past November in the wake of the horrifying terrorist attacks in Paris. When the hashtag #prayforparis went viral, Wallach responded with multiple social media posts and a blog post about how atheism was the only belief that could make the world a better place. (Though Wallach argues that it is not, in fact, a belief: “The fact that we have a word for it makes it seem like it’s equivalent to other belief systems, but it’s not. The absence of something is not equivalent to the thing itself.”)

After Wallach Tweeted that he was a “a rabid atheist, and the world would be a better place if more folk were” – a Tweet he subsequently deleted before deleting his account in its entirety – he doubled down in a block post that outlined all the way religions failed and all the reasons atheism was awesome.

Those who tried to explain to him why this behavior was – to say the least – problematic found themselves quickly blocked or shut down; at once point, Wallach tried to explain anti-Semitism to Jewish author Hannah Moskowitz before claiming that “if [her]parents are atheists and [his]dad is Jewish, [he’s] as much Jewish as [her].”

(For those wondering, Wallach blocked me during this incident despite being friendly with me and having taken my advice previously; while he did believe me in regards to his behavior towards Justina Ireland, which you can see in Tweets above, my snarky comment to him about “the only good people are the people who are exactly like me” was, apparently, too much for him to take. As Wallach’s account has since been deleted and I purged my social media account in January, that interaction is no longer publicly available.)

Take this behavior in comparison to author LJ Silverman, who recently received a sea of anti-Semitic hate mail – including crude manipulated images of her in an oven – for Tweeting that she was worried about the upcoming election in the context of history. Wallach painted himself to be the victim, somebody “attacked” for insulting all of the religious folks in the YA community, while Silverman, who simply shared a worry plaguing her, became a victim of virulent trolls.

While Wallach deleted his social media accounts after this, there were no public consequences to his actions despite ill-will from the YA community at large. If another member of the YA community had spoken out – one of our Catholic or Islamic or Jewish or Mormon authors, for instance – the backlash would have been substantially worse, possibly career-ruining.

Wallach’s career, however, was not ruined; he recently landed a six-figure deal for a book trilogy centered around a “holy war.”

And thus, we return to Wallach’s dismissive comments on suicide – which, it turned out, were neither new or original. In a blog post deleted after it came to light during this discussion, Wallach rated “the top ten literary suicides (organized by emo-ness)” which included all of the characters of HBO’s Girls – “It’s really just a fantasy of mine.” – and, ranking at number one, Sylvia Plath – who is not a character but a real person who suffered from depression before taking her own life at a young age.

“I’m only going to talk about the fact that a successful YA author found it appropriate to glorify, romanticize, and mock what for many of his readers is among the highest causes of death,” wrote Schwab in her “We Need To Talk About Tommy” post. “That this author could be so very careless and flippant and insensitive about such a very serious issue is abhorrent. That two years after penning this post he still sees suicide as something to be made light of, to be used as a marketing tool.”

Simon & Schuster made no public comment about any of Wallach’s comments. His career, save for making enemies of some fellow authors, seems relatively unscathed by his callous actions.

Anyway, the moral of the story is, like, if you wanna read books by straight white dudes, go for it, but check them out from the library. Spend your book-buying money on books by women, nonbinary/other folks, and dudes who aren’t straight and/or white. Straight white men, PARTICULARLY in categories of literature that are largely targeted towards girls and women, and largely written by girls and women -- but published, edited, and marketed by other straight white men -- are lauded FAR above what they’re actually worth, as like, storytellers or human people go.

The Glass Escalator is a one-way trip to wonderland, but YA is a skyscraper that was built by women and I PROMISE you, whatever book by one of these dudes you’re considering reading, there’s a better version by a woman and/or person of color on the shelves nearby that just didn’t get 1/10th of the marketing money.

And of course there should be an effort to be kind on social media, but ��keep YA kind”... to whom? To the people who were being silenced when they were pointing out legitimate problems with the behaviors of men in social power? (And one of whom, in the case of Jay Asher, was LITERALLY DANGEROUS BC HE IS A SEXUAL PREDATOR.) Like, really? There had to be a hashtag campaign to silence dozens of people with legitimate, not-bullying-just-pointing-out-problems-that-are-problems-with-stuff-you-did-dude problems, to make social media feel more comfortable for four middle-aged straight white men?

As though the outside world isn’t comfortable enough for middle-aged straight white men????
