something I feel like isn't nearly appreciated enough about mob's arc in mp100 is that his background is... Completely normal. I see a lot of people interpreting mob's parents as neglectful or distant based on the few scenes we've seen of them, which greatly baffles me because their few scenes aim to establish his family life as.. completely normative. They have the normal, average quips of a normal family. And I think it's very unique and refreshing because it means mob's troubles and internal hardship isn't a product of his upbringing, it's a byproduct of a traumatic experience and of his own personality and how it coalesces with his psychic powers. And I personally think more media should acknowledge that some people, even with perfectly normative and healthy familial dynamics and circumstances, will still develop very complex internal issues and personal psychology. and on the same note, some people with perfectly normal upbringing won't feel comfortable to confide in their parents and seek an external authority figure to look up to, which doesn't necessarily mean them and their parents are estranged. I dont think mob's (or ritsu's) life have to be unhappy to legitimize or explain the fact he has the personal struggles he does. Embracing normalcy is the main theme of this series.

Ghosts of happier times
First | prev | next
There are more important things happening all around the two of them, but being so close to each other is awfully distracting. Never mind the sharp blade between them, they both wish they could get closer, wish they could go back to how it was before.
Levi had sworn to himself he'd make that traitor pay if they were to cross paths again, but when he hears them laugh, sees them smile, sees that something spark in their eyes, he sees- Hange. And Hange is someone he can't bring himself to hurt, no matter how much they already hurt him. So he lets them go, even though he's sure he just got played. Again.
Hange, who had started to accept that this is where they would meet their end, is baffled. But then again, Levi has always been kind under that rough exterior. Far kinder than he should be. So even with the sharp blade pressed to their throat, seeing Levi's familiar mannerisms had made Hange feel right at home. Suddenly, just getting to see him again had felt like a gift, even if it meant finally atoning for their actions. But instead he's walking away and Hange doesn't know what to do.

Decided to go ahead and post some rough sketches of my adult design for Rich Cheese, since I already posted my version of her pre-war/childhood design. I’m still workshopping things, so nothing here is final and there’s things I have in mind that I haven’t added yet. I might not even end up using these sketches as a base for my linework in the end, but I do like how it’s going so far! I might go ahead and replace the image(s) once I’m finished with the complete ones. Or, maybe not. Sometimes I’m lazy. Anyways, for those who might not be able to read the text, here’s what it (generally) says, with lots of extra bonus info thrown in because I couldn’t resist doing so (long post ahead):
- Wings are built for high speed and maneuverability, slicing through the air with ease. However, they are not built for extensive gliding or passive flight as Golden Cheese’s wings are. Sustained flight takes a lot of energy, but she’s nonetheless much faster than most.
- Unlike Golden Cheese’s wings, Rich Cheese can use hers to more actively emote. At times, they function or appear similar to hands, though it varies stylistically depending on the scene. When at rest, they tend to look like a cape or cloak of sorts, as Rich Cheese does not go through the effort to hold her wings high at all times as her mother does. If anything, they often drag on the ground. It’s kind of a bad habit, if you ask me. Much like her mother, her wings are not actually feathered, but rather made of high-quality cheese fabric. Despite this, Rich Cheese still controls them as if they are another appendage.
- Rich Cheese is generally tired and angry as an adult, trusting no one for the most part. Her greatest treasure (aside from the select few she does hold dear) is her trust, and she won’t just give it out willy-nilly. She is not inclined to offer second chances freely, either, unlike her mother Golden Cheese. Rich Cheese doesn’t understand how anyone could both forgive a significant betrayal AND continue to trust the betrayer afterwards.
- She escaped the Dark Flour War in secret through a tunnel near the back of the palace, primarily designed for royalty to escape in case of emergency. To prevent invading forces from tearing the place apart in an attempt to locate the princess, a servant posed as her and crumbled in her place to throw the enemy off of her trail. No invader would waste their time looking for someone they were certain had already been eliminated. (This servant is likely my version of Powder Cheese Cookie. He is based on a chaotic god of trickery and confusion, after all. Who’s to say he couldn’t create a convincing illusion or two?)
- Unfortunately, this ruse fooled more than just the enemy. Because the servant’s body was crumbled to the point of being unidentifiable, what few clues were left led Golden Cheese to believe that her only daughter had perished. Though she held out hope in the beginning that she’d be able to bring her back by way of her digital kingdom, this quickly proved to be impossible; the room she’d prepared for Rich Cheese in her realm remained forever empty, albeit well-maintained. Golden Cheese has been mourning ever since, though she conceals it well enough.
- Rich Cheese was very traumatized by her experiences, leading to hyper-vigilance, resource-guarding, an inherent distrust of others, a reluctance to part with anything she considers to be hers (even if it’s for the good of others), and a tendency to lash out at times. She almost certainly has some form of PTSD.
- She is inherently more modest than Golden Cheese, primarily to avoid others seeing that she has anything worth taking from her. She is terrified to lose what she considers valuable, and feels that flaunting one’s treasures is just asking for them to be ripped away. This has been reinforced by the harsh environment she ended up living in, where resources are scarce and creatures fight tooth and nail over even the smallest chance to enrich themselves.
- Despite being only 13 years old or so at the time of the invasion by Dark Enchantress’s forces, Rich Cheese feels a lot of shame for being unable to defend the kingdom in her mother’s absence, often considering herself a coward for running away.
- Though she and Golden Cheese had their disagreements as any parent-child duo would in the past, she generally looked up to her mother, being treated as Golden Cheese’s greatest treasure. Her mother always had an unwavering and unquestioning belief that she was destined for greatness, bragging about her constantly to anyone who would listen, but failed to convey that such would be the case no matter the circumstances. As a result, Rich Cheese strived to be an heir worthy of her mother’s love, attention, and pride, leading to the development of an inferiority complex and, eventually, survivor’s guilt. She’s incredibly hard on herself, and most of her resentment is directed inward.
- While she may have initially had some conflicting feelings surrounding Golden Cheese’s absence immediately after her escape, over time, those negative experiences and feelings fell away, replaced by a sort of nostalgic longing and emotional escapism. Thinking of returning home—to her room, her friends, her kingdom, and most of all her mother—was a pleasant daydream for an alienated, broken child who had lost everything overnight. This led to an idealized mental image of her mother (and by extension her old life) that has not changed substantially since childhood, though she cannot afford to engage with such fanciful imaginings much anymore. When the two of them meet again, the idealization of her mother will undoubtedly be a point of contention, given that Golden Cheese is a very flawed cookie in her own right. Even so, Rich Cheese deeply loves and misses her nonetheless.
- Though she doesn’t really blame her mother for flying off to save all of cookiekind, Rich Cheese does have a bit of a paradoxical resentment towards those who went through the effort to save her or assist her during her escape. She is frequently tormented by the question of, “Why is it that I got to live while everyone else had to crumble?” Is she truly special enough to deserve life more than any other citizen of the Golden Cheese Kingdom? Or was she merely lucky that she just so happened to the daughter of a revered monarch often considered to be a goddess in the dough? Could they not have chosen anyone better to spare? Rich Cheese tries not to think about it, but is rarely successful.
- For quite some time, Rich Cheese believed her mother had disappeared along with the other ancient heroes—dead, if she had to guess. However, even upon the shock of hearing that the ancient heroes had returned, Rich Cheese didn’t dare show her face in the Golden Cheese Kingdom again. Not only would it be too much to bear seeing those forlorn gates again, but since being forced to fend for herself, withstanding thirst, starvation, and desperation, her actions have sunken very low many a time and she doesn’t consider herself worthy of the prestigious position she once held. Her heart aches for home, but she refuses to follow it.
- Her lifestyle of distrust and concealment, along with her incredible speed during flight, indicate that she is likely an Ambush class cookie. She’d much rather strike before you see it coming than risk injury… unless she’s pressured or provoked into a direct confrontation, of course. Push a few buttons and see what happens.
- Deep down, Rich Cheese is sensitive and still has a lot of kindness in her heart, especially for others who are struggling. How she was raised conflicts directly with how she had to behave to survive. She was brought up to care about her subjects and encouraged to share her wealth with others—and yet, to survive in the absence of abundance, one often has to keep valuable resources to themselves the vast majority of the time… even if others may suffer, or even crumble without assistance.
- Nearly every time she gives in to a kind urge, it comes back to bite her, unfortunately—or, at least, that’s how it feels to her. Still, there are times when Rich Cheese simply cannot help but to get involved in an attempt to aid someone. That part of herself causes a lot of grief, and in her opinion, she might be better off if she cared a little less.
~~~
Tagging @browhyihatethis since it’s more info on my version of Rich Cheese and you wanted to know about it. I still plan to perhaps eventually go more in-depth about how the invasion happened and the immediate aftermath, since I’ve thought about it in excruciating detail, but yeah. This is merely the tip of a very large iceberg. Come and get your food I guess LOL
