What do you think the Master.... wants? If you had to describe it directly, or the vague field of contradictory things there?

I finally have the time to answer this. Anon I love this question. I love you.

So first of all what the master thinks he wants and what he actually wants are two different things. I made a post a while ago where I said that even if they got all they wanted, they wouldn't be satisfied, they're doomed to never be content with what they have. But, specifically, what is it that they want??????? And what's so contradictory about it???????

Let's go to the roots of this. What we do know is that the master has always strived for perfection and he always had that kind of hunger for power. Being in charge and able to decide anything is something he's always enjoyed. What he and the doctor had in common most of all, was their need to change gallifrey's rules of non-intervention. time lords promised to just watch history, and never intervene on it. Both the doctor and the master disagreed on this, they wanted to be able to change the events.

We soon find out that the master's reason for this is to have some kind of power. Changing history places them on a higher level. They crave the power to do this. They could change anyone's life. They could change history. They want to do this simply to enjoy the power they would have. This doesn't only apply to changing the timelines. They need more. They start wanting to conquer universes, cause it would give them even more power. I also mentioned they always strived for perfection so...

What do they want? The answer is everything. Anything and everything. All the universe under their control. That's what they think they want.

Now that we talked about their obsession for power, we can talk about their obsession for the doctor. The master and The doctor bond at the academy for being very smart and having similar revolutionary ideas about time lords society. They understand each other, they feel like they want the same things! They think alike! They promise each other they would travel together and do whatever they want. Then they realise the way they think isn't that similar. They fundamentally want the same thing, but for completely different reasons. The doctor wants to travel and intervene to see the stars and help people (but mostly, simply have fun without anyone getting hurt), while the master wants to travel and intervene to own the stars and have power on the people (might as well kill some for fun, why shouldn't they?).

At first the master doesn't want to let go of the idea of the doctor traveling with him or being friends in general, cause they know they're alike! How can the doctor not see this is what they've always wanted? Why would you simply save people with the power to intervene? He knows the doctor could be like him, if they wanted to, but they choose not to. Why??

When in colony in space the master offers the doctor an half share in the universe, he says:

"Doctor, why don't you come in with me? We're both Time Lords, we're both renegades. We could be masters of the galaxy! Think of it, Doctor, absolute power! Power for good. Why, you could reign benevolently, you could end wars, suffering, disease. We could save the universe"

It's not about destroying, it's about having power. for the master that means also destroying. But it would be okay if the doctor used it for good. The point is the power, not what it's used for. The master can't understand why the doctor doesn't want power, cause for them, it's all there is. How can someone not want to be in charge of everything? How can someone not want to bend life to their will?? They really can't even begin to fathom that...

(A little additional thing. The master is still deep down kinda hoping the doctor will accept power, as seen in death in heaven, with missy offering him an army of cybermen to show him they're the same. Hoping the doctor will accept that power. Trying to prove he does want that power).

This brings us to the master developing such strong hate for the doctor. They're driven by their extreme need to understand the doctor, but they can't. It's SUCH a problem for them that they just keep hating them more and more and more. Why doesn't that idiot understand????? They want to kill them. Yes. They need to kill the doctor and their obsession for them will be gone. The doctor constantly ruining the master's plans fuels that hate even more. The master needs to kill them. They need to be in control. They can't be obsessing over the doctor cause it's basically all they think about and they want to kill that idea, killing the doctor would stop that obsessive hate that keeps them not in control. Also the doctor doesn't seem to hate the master as much. And that makes them hate them even more. Why isn't the doctor obsessed with them like they're with the doctor??? Why do they just don't care???

So. What do they want? They want to kill the doctor (not just wanting the doctor dead. No one else should kill the doctor. They need the satisfaction of doing it).

Ok this brings us to the contradictory things. alright. They want power, but they also strive for perfection. It's basically impossible to rule the whole universe, considering new worlds and colonies forming every second in every part of the galaxies. They'll never have what they want. But let's imagine for one second that's possible, that the master in some way is able to get the whole universe under their control. Now that they do, what will they do with it? They have no goal anymore, nothing to do. They can play with people, kill some, destroy some planets, then what? What do they do now? That's a goddamn bitch of an unsatisfactory situation. So, contradictorily, having what they want would only make things worse.

And, if they manage to kill the doctor, which, they always hesitate to do so, because "a cosmos without the doctor scarcely bears thinking about", anyway if they manage to do it, that's also unsatisfactory. The doctor keeps the master on their toes, they need each other for balance, the master is entertained by his goal to kill the doctor. Once again, killing the doctor would leave him without goal, so, it would be worse, again.

maybe we should go deeper and try, well, maybe they do not kill the doctor, but they want the doctor to accept power, to join them. Can you guess what I'm about to say? Yeah, they would hate it anyway, and I know that because it happened already. Remember the valeyard??? The master even HELPED the doctor and despised the valeyard. The valeyard is what the master thought he wanted from the doctor, just to realise, hey. that's not the doctor I know at all. So, unsatisfied, again.

The master's whole life is full of contraddictions, they think they know what they want until they get it and realise they didn't want that at all. It's neverending and doomed. either they're stuck in trying to accomplish their impossible goals, and if they accomplish them they would be just as stuck. There's no solution really, condemned to never get what they want.

I hope this answered your ask even a little bit, sorry if this is very long! I got carried away

yayyyy fellow jazz soundwave rivalry trutherrr. soundwave is trying so hard to be mr nonchalant and jazz is all embrace the beauty of music asshole. so true jazz

IT’S A REALLY UNDEREXPLORED DYNAMIC! it’s such a shame, too. jazz specifically is a character I tend to see with a lot of his core beliefs warped in fan content— which isn’t bad, of course, it’s always fun and fine to put a new original spin on a character! but a lot of what made jazz such an interesting character to me (across most if not all continuities) was his genuine appreciation for human culture. there’s a lot of empathy in the ability to connect to a culture that’s completely alien to onself. he’s always embraced the Other, and has a deep understanding why people create things, like music and art— because everybody does! creation is a privilege of the living, and living is universal, everywhere. life is to create, life is to enjoy what others create, and it’s a form of freedom, too.

on the flipside, you have soundwave, a character I also believe is very closely tied to music by virtue of his choice of alt mode, but in a different way. not a ton of continuities focus a ton on soundwave’s relationship to earth— there’s bits here and there, but it’s clear he usually has a complicated extending sympathy towards earth and everything on it. do I think soundwave appreciates earth music? well, yes, but I don’t think he recognizes it in the same way jazz does. there’s a conflict between what he appreciates by nature and the active role he plays in the destruction of it. said destruction is something I don’t think jazz can ever forgive him for, but that’s obviously not the be-all-and-end-all of a dynamic. there’s a lot of yummy potential in jazz’s recognition of soundwave’s hypocrisy! I think jazz would find it unbelievably funny that nobody’s immune to appreciating good music and the people behind it, and soundwave would find it an eternal headache that an autobot would be able to recognize something he’s afraid to recognize himself. and of course, the banter would be excellent. i don’t think soundwave would realize absolutely nothing he can do will break jazz’s laidback attitude towards everything. serious hypercompetent person against an easygoing hypercompetent person. they’d never be true friends, but maybe they’d have a very important rivalry with some very important lulls.
