Back in my day, we called "tradwives" quiverfullers and didn't erase the fact that the movement was built out of a bunch of Christian nationalist cults, and that women were not and are not the movement's leaders.

These family systems do not exist just to be high-control family systems. These are points on the pyramid toward dominionism. […] And neglect is how it’s achieved. I think neglect is one of the most important things we talk about, because you just won’t get that compliance any other way.

as someone who was raised in an actual cult it drives me absolutely nuts that people throw around the word carelessly. People say "you're in a cult" when they actually mean "you have a strongly held belief/opinion/worldview that i don't like"
and it just makes me wonder do people know there's actual criteria to being considered a cult and it doesn't just mean "ideology i disagree with and think is bad"? like. guys. theres a LOT more to it than that it has much more to do with systems of corruption and power than it does with the actual content of the belief system. And I feel like it's used as a gotcha or an insult a lot by people who have zero understanding of what the word actually means.
anyway this post is more about politics than any individual person but the funniest contender for this behavior is my dad (who raised me in a cult) telling me i'm in a cult for supporting my trans siblings

Pearl’s story and struggle really appeal to me. I think that finding one’s voice and power is a widely appealing storyline, but I’ve never found a character I related to more. I really appreciate the nuance with which femininity and power are portrayed in pearls arc. I know there are other lenses that you can look at pearl through, but this is the one that resonates most with my life experience.
Pearl is created knowing she is unimportant, and she is made knowing she has duties. Pearls are to be quiet and submissive, competent and independent, beautiful, and most importantly, to lend an air of status to their superiors. This was the femininity I grew up with. Pearls early life highlights how in conforming to these expectations, femininity grants you social power.
Unfortunately for pearl, this social power is very conditional. Once pearl moves to acknowledge and actualize her desires for justice and respect (and love!) she is shunned and othered. The renegade pearl simply does not have enough power to change the current system of power from within.
The next time we see her chronologically, she aims to suppress bitterness about her relationship with Rose. Pearl has broken out of the enforced prejudice of the diamond authority, but has not truly escaped. Vestiges of prejudice linger in pearls mind and actions, as well as Roses. Rose did not need to keep keeping secrets, she did not need to keep operating as if she alone knew best.

Having been in an evangelical cult, I can tell you that even if the public-facing conservative that the soundbite-of-the-week is coming from is not practicing extreme christian fundamentalism themselves, they at least appreciate & admire those who do.
Maybe even aspire to it.
It's just that for themselves personally, that lifestyle is "too hard" to live in practice on a daily basis.
I know this because people who believe this way used to approach my husband (no, not me, never me; being the wife/mother who actually keeps up these appearance on a daily basis is not to be admired) to let him know they appreciate that the AFAB people in the brood only wear skirts & do not cut their hair, that he had his "quiver full", that we "lived the life" so visibly.
They appreciate this because they benefit from people living this way in many ways - they get blind devotion & financial support from this demographic, as well as their loyal votes.
Plus them having broods of many children means they're raising and indoctrinating the next generation of loyal supporters in greater numbers than the loyal supporters of the other side.
It's win-win-win for mainstream conservatives. What reason would there be to change?

feel like that was more because they called themselves quiverfulls then. they’ve definitely done some image polishing
Yeah sure they have definitely done some image polishing, and they've discovered social media. And they definitely for sure want us to focus on the pretty, shiny, well groomed, mostly wealthy, mostly white women with gorgeously curated instagram and tiktok accounts as the new face of the movement, and not on the husbands and fathers who have always led the movement, held the power within the movement, and who the movement has always been meant to serve. This is not a new movement and it is not a woman led movement. This sheer fact that they want me to focus on these women, and go along with their rebranding, does not oblige me to do so, and it doesn't oblige you to do so either.
Tradwives are just the lipstick on the pig that is the quiverfull movement/Christian patriarchy, and Dominionism and Christian nationalism. The movement hasn't changed; it just has a new marketing strategy.

Does anyone else know how to stop making themselves small and pleasing for men? I’ve mostly managed to stop the conscious decisions, but the subconscious stuff I can’t seem to stop.
When I’m in a relationship with a man I can’t help but stop growing as a person, softening my opinions and beliefs, softening my voice and altering my appearance to be desirable. And it’s subconscious, I didn’t even realize what I was doing until much later. But it’s not even just guys I’m dating, I give all males I care about way more sway over me than I want.
How do I stop?

Roe vs. Wade and the Quiverfull Movement
***Trigger warning: Christian Fundamentalism, sexual assault, Wicca, mental illness, religion*** The first time I was ever committed to a psyche ward due to my schitzoaffective (bi-polar type), I took comfort in reading some of the Psalms, even though I am not a Christian. Despite the fact that I don’t believe in the Bible, it still has some words of wisdom that have helped me realize my real…

Cherish's Diary:
I'm so confused after that Bible study. Why would following the Bible not be a good thing? The women at this church seem nice, but I don't understand how they could just say we don't have to follow the commandments of the Bible. Why would they be in the Bible if we weren't meant to follow them? I know my parents would say it's heretical, or they're lukewarm Christians. But I was thinking about what they said, and maybe they have a point?
Sarah said that maybe people who have strict rules in their family or church end up doing stuff because they don't want to be punished, not because they think it's pleasing to God. Surely that's not good, since then they're thinking about what people think of them more than what God wants them to do. But then I don't think you can just ignore parts of the Bible because of that? I don't know, it's a lot to think about. But I'll keep seeing these ladies and going to the Bible study, I think. They've been so sweet to me and I don't think they'd mean it in a bad way, even if they are wrong.

We celebrated Caroline's birthday today! What they say about time flying could not be more true. It feels like just yesterday that I held her in my arms for the first time, and yet it's been a year. She has the most beautiful head of ginger curls, and she keeps us all on our toes by crawling around constantly, whether we like it or not! Luckily she doesn't have to worry about being modest quite yet, or else she'd be getting her little skirts tangled up just about everywhere.
I've been praying and praying for a positive pregnancy test to give this sweet girl a baby sister or brother, but no luck thus far. I'm just a few weeks shy of 40, so it's in God's hands now more than ever.
