I was wondering if you have any recs for superman runs, I've finished reading all the available absolute superman and I'm really on the mood for more superman stuff, I've already read all star superman and loved it, btw
I myself have never really read prolonged Superman runs, although I've been meaning to look into Busiek's stuff from back when. As far as miniseries go I enjoyed (and continue to enjoy):
Superman: Birthright
Superman: American Alien
Superman: Secret Identity
Superman for all Seasons
Superman: Earth One
Alan Moore outings Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? and For the Man Who Has Everything
The Death of Superman and it's follow-ups, World without a Superman and Reign of the Supermen
The Trial of Superman (conditionally advanced; one of the first really involved superhero comics I ever read so I can't actually attest to it's quality removed from nostalgia.)
Assuming a certain tolerance for Grant Morrison Metanonsense, I really enjoyed Superman's parts in Final Crisis.
I've also heard good things about Superman Smashes the Klan by Gene Luen Yang and Mark Millar's run on the 90s tie-in comic for Superman: The Animated Series, although I've yet to read either of those.

Ok so give me more good video essay youtuber recs i beggggg
Heres a list of my faves and what they cover cuz i dont like gatekeeping and these ppl need more love:
Unpredictable (true crime)—when you look up the definition of underrated this chanel pops up istg they are just that good. Their videos are good quality, with clean and precise narration. The tone of the video is respectful and informative—in case youre like me and dislike when people crack jokes when covering the stories of actual victims. The wording is really good and precise, so you dont have to actually watch the video and can listen in if you prefer.
Nexpo (horror, paranormal/supernatural stuff, internet urban legends)—really love his work! The videos are amazing quality with so much effort put into them! The research done never feels superficial and the narration is really nice, the videos are done in a way where you dont need to watch the video to understand whats going on and can just listen in. Amazing stuff omd i love this man hes so goated
Farell McGuire (horror, internet urban legends)—the stuff he talks about isnt all that well known and is super intresting! The research is good, the narration is amazing amd the video quality is great too! I defo reccomend if you prefer shorter videos, since his vids tend to be in a ≈10-30 min range, unlike the others on this list who make much longer content.
Horses (books, history, taboo things, anything tbh)—oh yeah, boy do i mean anything. From cannibalism to book analysis, you name it they have a video in some connection to it. Anyways, the videos? Chefs kiss. These are in a much "listen in" kinda format, but still really good nonetheless. The analysis they do is informative and well researched, with good narration! The topics they choose to cover are like i mentioned, taboo, yet incredibly intresting!
Mothers basement (anime)—not really underrated per se, but shh still love him. His anime vids and analyses are really good, with the entertainment value being top notch! His critiques are really good and even if you dont agree with him you'll still want to listen to his take. The narration is great and the editing is top notch! Probs the best anime channel on yt atm tbh.
HM since i got too lazy to continue typing: The beak (brainrot, videogames), Uhh yeah (brainrot, videogames), raymundo 2112 (same as the rest)—all three of these come down to personal prefrence, as they all cover similar stuff imo. Still, all three of them are worth a watch!!

I could probably write a damn dissertation length essay on my thoughts about "our love is disgusting"
ITS INSANE THAT THE SERIES ONLY HAS TEN CHAPTERS AND YET I FEEL LIKE THERE IS SO MUCH LAYERED CHARACTERIZATION AND INTERESTING WRITING CHOICES THAT MY MIND KEEPS ROTATING THE SERIES ROUND AND ROUND.
I highly recommend it if you enjoy nuanced and uncomfortably well written toxic Yuri with some of the best acespec coded representation ive personally ever seen executed in any media.

Recommended Media | 2024 Roundup!
Hey, everyone! I decided to collect a list of my top media of 2024; I'm very picky about how I spend my limited free time, and everything on this list gets a 10/10 recommendation from me!
I don't do reviews often, but I personally prioritize strong storytelling over everything else... though as a professor of animated film, I'm a sucker for strong technical execution, too! The media included on this list were not necessarily released in 2024, either-- I personally experienced them for the first time this year.
Best Shows:
These pieces of media are exemplars of storytelling and objectively excellent technical execution; I'd recommend them to most.
Blue Eye Samurai was captivating from start to finish-- so much so that I watched it three times all the way through! I'm not one to re-watch shows, but this was a true gem. The style didn't draw me in at first, and I'm not a huge fan of the genre, but the tight writing, clear themes, and artistic execution make this a much-watch for me.
Unsurprisingly, Fortiche's Arcane makes the list. Not only did the team do a great job of creating an immersive world and compelling characters, but the art direction on this show has been phenomenally influential in the animation world. Everything-- from the editing, camerawork, animation, voice acting, foley-work, score, and pacing-- is excellent. I use sections of this show in my Master's level courses because the use of film theory is so consistent and well executed!
Pluto is a beautifully animated adaptation of the 2003 Award-Winning Manga by the same name that discusses the horrors and aftermath of war through the lens of a futuristic sci-fi murder-mystery. Though it gets off to a slow start-- demanding a three episode investment before it truly has you hooked-- its beautiful visuals and compelling narrative act as a wonderful tribute to a touching and poignant story.
Best Games:
Big Mode's Animal Well is the indie studio's debut title, and as someone who loves story, this game... has none. It's on this list because despite my aversion to story-light games, I could not put it down. It's a reasonably priced, beautifully art-directed puzzler that rewards exploration and experimentation in a way that few modern games do.
Atlus's Persona 4: Golden has my whole heart. I played Persona 5, enjoyed it, but picked up Persona 4 while on vacation. It is, by far, my favorite Persona game. You arrive in a small, rural town on the heels of a gruesome murder and slowly collected a group of misfit teenagers who are truly struggling to figure out who they are. Every character feels well-rounded, and at over 150 hrs of playtime, this dated title-- available on Switch-- is worth every penny, even in 2024.
Hiding Spot's Beacon Pines is a touching story about a kid slowly unraveling the dark history of his hometown. Though it's a short experience, the mechanics offer a fun and unique twist on the visual novel genre that had me coming back for more over and over again! The art is adorable, the music is sweet, and the story is a compelling delight that gives the player the convincing illusion of agency.

Roy Harper does not like Nightwing. He appreciates him, because what anti-hero doesn't need a strict, by-the-book counterpart who tries to stop him at every turn. But this respect does not mean they like each other. That's gonna be really hard to keep saying, though, if Dick keeps looking at him like that and asking for his help.

As I am unable to indulge in my yearly Independence Day tradition this year, I instead reccomend it to total strangers on the internet.
(If you are reading this and it is not July 4th, USA, this is still a decent recommendation in general)
Watch 1776, the movie musical from 1972. (It is available on Amazon and Apple TV for less than $5, and is free with Hulu)
“Why?” I hear you ask, “would I watch that old thing when I have Hamilton?”
Firstly- I will not compare quality. The two shows are apples and oranges and the only thing they have in common is the subject matter being the Revolutionary period of the USA.
I will openly admit that Hamilton has much more dynamic staging/dancing, and there is simply no rap to be heard in 1776.
That said, reasons you absolutely SHOULD watch it:
1) You have already seen Hamilton. Presumably you have not seen 1776. It will be something new.
2) The line “Sit down John, you old f-!” from Hamilton is a reference to this musical, so you know Lin Manuel Miranda is a fan.
3) The main character, John Adams, is played by a much younger William Daniels. You may know him as “Mr. Feeny.” And yes. He is glorious.
4) You will enjoy such fun quips as-
“I have better things to do than stand around listening to Benjamin Franklin quote himself.”
“Hold on John- that was a new one!”
(Arguing with God)
“A simple plague of locusts I’d accept with some dispare. But no, you gave us Congress! Good God Sir, was that fair?”
“May my horse be turned to glue if I can’t deliver unto you a resolution on Independancy.”
(Said horse- a paid actor- turns around to bite him)
Jokes from old congressmen about being so old it hurts to piss.
Jokes about bull testicles.
(Refusing to help write the Declaration)
“I cannot write with any style or proper edicate! I don’t know a participle from a predicate! I am just a humble cobbler from Connecticut.” (He is so relatable for that. The whole song is one big- everyone is trying to ditch this “group” project)
5) Thomas Jefferson being too horny to work is a major plot point.
6) The most romantic subplot in this film, and I mean, actually beautifully romantic, is John arguing with his wife, Abigail, via letters. Best part about that is these parts are straight from their real historical letters. Perfect in every way. 🥰
7) The discussion on Slavery is intense. I will say this version of events paints Jefferson rather rosy, but it was written before we knew what we knew about him, and he is documented as fighting hard to end slavery with the founding of the nation. It is bizarre, knowing that, that he continued on in the manner he did. People are multifaceted, and some just get worse with age.
But the part in this movie that is worth watching is the argument the South gives back. Thier argument is basically “If we are sinning by this practice, then you are sinning with us, because you benefit.” While it is a lack luster argument to keep doing as you are doing, it does allow a nuanced understanding of privelege before the term was even used in that manner.
It also delivers a bone chilling example of the triangle trade in the form of a song that has haunted me since childhood.
“Molasses to rum to slaves. Who sails the ships out of Boston? Laden with bibles and rum? Whose fortunes are made in the triangle trade? Hail Charleston! Hail Boston! Who stinketh the most?”
8) “Cool Considerate Men” is also bone chilling, as a bunch of conservative congressmen dance calmly while listening to a casualty report from Washington. The song will never not be relevant.
9) In the same way, “Mama Look Sharp” will always always bring me to tears. It is a song from a Messenger Boy sent with Washington’s missive from the front. He sings about his friend calling for his mother as the young boy lay dying on “the green.”
The green was where people held meetings and parties and festivals- the green is the old fashioned version of “the Town Park.” The first battles for freedom were faught in town parks, where boys crawled off under thier favorite tree to die.
In light of everything that we have heard about fighting for freedom around the world, the line “The soldiers they fired! Oh Ma, did we run. Hey! Hey! Mama, look sharp,” is making me cry right now, and I haven’t even heard this song in a year. 😭🎶
10) “Is anybody there??? Does anybody care?! Does anybody see what I see? I see Americans, ALL Americans, FREE, forever more! Is anybody there??? Does anybody care?! Does anybody see what I see?”
The older I get the more I relate to John Addams screaming into the void because he simply cannot fix all the problems by himself.
There is more I could say about this musical, but at that point it would just be telling. Go watch the film. It’s funny and fun and poignant and powerful, and might make you cry. As good broadway often does.

Tears of a Withered Flower - manhwa review!

Na Hae-soo's life unravels when her husband betrays her with an affair, leaving her burdened with debt and losing their child. In a devastating blow, she witnesses him with a younger woman. Broken and despondent, Na Hae-soo feels her life crumbling around her. However, a mysterious young man unexpectedly enters her life, asking to be taught about adult love. His vulnerability and sincerity begin to stir emotions within Na Hae-soo, challenging her to reconsider her path forward.
tags: josei, drama, younger man, older woman, divorce
status: ongoing
this manhwa is beautiful, well written, and excellently placed. im personally not a huge fan of older FL younger ML and i rarely keep up with ongoing updates, but TOAWF has me hooked! there's mystery, suspense, romance, shitty relationships, and abusive parents, pretty much everything I look for in a toxic manhwa. not to say their blooming relationship is toxic, while he IS hiding that he's a rich boy and possibly a gangster (still unknown at this time) he treats her likes she's an angel. i think? it's complicated.
we start off meeting Hae-soo at 30ish as she contemplates her failing relationship. she's concerned he's cheating (he is) with a much younger woman. she sees youth around her and wonders when she became so tired and worn out. she has been working multiple jobs non stop ever since she became an adult, as her husband, Mincheol, took out a loan under her name without telling her. though they split up due to the debt, they still live together and are in a relationship. she now is disillusioned with life, barely hanging on, and not sure which direction to go.

then, we meet our ML, 21 year old Beom Tae-Ha. Hae-Soo finds out that he has been coming to her flower shop job daily while she's working to buy roses, but she hasn't noticed until now.
Tae-Ha is a bit of a mystery still. we know that he is hiding that he's rich from Hae-Soo, has subordinates, and has a very particular family that is prone to violence and the occasional murder. he's definitely the obsessive type, and follows Hae-Soo around like a lovesick puppy despite knowing she's with Mincheol. he has manipulative tendencies but never seems to lie or use them on Hae-Soo directly, but definitely does indirectly... overall, he's complicated, dark, and secretive. and very, very attractive.

Mincheol Kang is... complicated. he is Hae-Soo's high school sweetheart, first love, and savior. while in the present he is cold and detached, resentful of Hae-Soo, they used to be a very sweet couple. he still clearly cares for her somewhere deep down in his fucked up heart, but the pain he is putting her through is NOT worth anything he could give her. especially since he is actively cheating on her with a younger woman. ugh.
the best way to sum up their relationship is exactly how the manhwa put it in chapter 30:
"Our youth was always full of bruises, just turning blue. Even in the muddy struggles of misfortune, you were there. Tonight, I'd gladly burn away in this blue youth. And... The place we've burned and left behind."
god. what beautiful writing. what an absolute asshole of a guy.
overall, worth a read if you enjoy relationship drama, obsessive men, and a sad FL who is finally being treated kindly after a horrible relationship. so right up my alley! and i cannot state enough how fantastic and visual the writing is. whoever did the translations on templescans, props to you!!!
this review was written at the release of ch 35.
rating:
romance 8/10
plot 10/10
overall 9/10

So I bought this book as a treat for myself after scoping the first chapter and deciding: Let's go. And you know what-not half bad. I'd give it a 4/5 or 3.5/5. It's very funny, has some good spicy moments. I really liked it. However-it's a bit fast paced for my liking. I can't help it, I like a book that meanders. BUT that's just me. I feel like this book would be very enjoyable to most others, especially if you're looking for a quick read that's really fun, and goes down easy. Very cute book, and i will be reading the others, Check it out :3
