Prompt 27 - Candle
@wolfstarmicrofic October 27, word count 381
Remus squinted at the pages of his book. He only had a few more pages left of his chapter, but his candle had burnt so low it was barely illuminating the words any more. But he needed to finish the chapter.
The candle was almost out, and he still had four pages left. He held his book as close as he dared to the sputtering candle when it went out.
“Bugger,” He grumbled as he pulled out his wand. He could probably get away with it if he kept under the covers.
“Don’t you dare, Moony,” Sirius's voice spoke softly in the darkness of the dorm room. “No Lumos, that was the deal. It’s too bright, even under your covers.” Remus put his wand back down, gutted that he couldn’t finish the chapter.
Feet padded across the floor, and Sirius jumped into his bed, holding up his candle. “Here, finished your chapter, you nutter,” Remus grinned and stuck it in his candleholder, illuminating his bed again.
“Thanks, Padfoot,” Remus grinned as he picked his book up again. Sirius yawned and laid himself down next to Remus. Sirius tended to crawl into bed with James when he couldn’t sleep, but on rare occasions, he chose Remus, mainly when he couldn’t be bothered walking the short distance back to his bed. Either way, Remus felt honoured when he did.
Remus quickly finished the last few pages, and of course, it ended on a cliffhanger. He flipped to the next page, and just as he was about to start the next chapter, Sirius’s hand shot up and took the book.
“Oh no, you don’t. It’s sleeping time now; you can read the rest tomorrow.” He picked up Remus’s bookmark off the bedside table and put it between the pages, so Remus wouldn’t lose his place before he blew out the candle. Remus rolled his eyes but wiggled down so he was lying next to Sirius. The bed wasn’t really big enough for the pair of them, but Sirius always found a way to fit. He flung his left arm and leg over Remus’s body and snuggled in tight. Remus kissed the top of his head and wrapped his arms around his best friend. Sirius sighed and snuggled impossibly closer as they both fell asleep.

okay now imagine: orange side but he's like best friends with logan The group tries to get logan to stop him but they're just completely chilling together like "sis you don't wanna know what roman said last week," "honey what'd he say???" [Short fic under the cut]
Thomas rubbed his eyes, trying to shut out the arguing around him.
"hE TOOK MY PLACE! SCOUNDREL, I DEMAND YOU GIVE IT BACK!" Roman shouted over the others, to which Orange just giggled.
"Or what, you salty b*tch?" He spat back. Roman gasped, holding his hand inches away from his mouth in disgust.
"How- how dare you! you, you-" He fumbled for words, stomping his foot. "-Big- citrus, freak!" he finally finished.
Patton turned to Thomas. "And you're sure you can't get rid of him? Nothing you try is working, kiddo?" he pressed.
Thomas rubbed his temples, but that just made his headache worse which made him even madder.
"No, sorry pat. I don't know how to get rid of him, if I could just clear my mind or something, that would help a lot." he said, glancing up briefly. Patton frowned slightly, scratching his head. "Gosh, I'm sorry, thinking of plans was never my strong suit." He said sadly, turning back to Orange and Roman, who were still in a shouting match.
Virgil snapped his fingers, looking up hopefully. "Thinking! Logan!" He suddenly exclaimed, raising his hand to summon the Logical side. For just a moment, the Orange side seemed to stop arguing at the sudden mention of logan's name, but he said nothing as logan rose up in his usual spot, next to Roman. "Ah, salutations roman, might I ask why you're in my-?" Logan began, glancing over to Roman's usual place.
Thomas watched as his face first filled with confusion, then lighting up with something he's never seen before. "Oh, hello," Logan said, giving Orange a warm smile. "Why, I haven't seen you in a good couple of days, how have you been?" He asked. Orange lit up instantly. "Lo~ogan! I was wondering where you went! I've been good, catching up with your friends here~" He said, beckoning to the others. "What-?" Roman began, only to be cut off by Logan. "Oh, yes, they're quite entertaining, It's wonderful to see you again, I was beginning to wonder why you weren't showing up for tea-"
"I apologize, It's hard to scheme and show up for tea every day, that and Remus being annoying as usual-" Virgil turned to Logan in a stunned manner. "Logan, do you- do you know him??" He gasped, wide eyed. "Well of course I do, he's rather pleasant when you get to know him." "But he's a dark side!"
"So where you, your point?" Logan said crossly, turning back to Orange. "Ohmygosh, how's your book going? last I checked you where on, what, chapter fifteen?" He asked. "Oh, It's the worst thing- Remus found it, poor thing was in shreds before I could wrestle it away from him." Logan's face fell into pity. "I'm so sorry to hear that, did you not have a copy somewhere? I recall you saying you made one just in case something did happen to the original." "Oh, you're right! One moment, folks-" Orange said, sinking down quickly.
A quick moment of silence, broken by roman. "Alright, what was that?" He demanded. Logan turned to him, blinking innocently. "Pardon?" "He comes in here, starts causing chaos, and you talk to him about making a book?" Roman said. "Anytime I bring up one of the books I make, you're never interested!" He whined. Thomas turned to logan as well. "Logan, how long have you been friends with him?" He asked. Logan paused, making a small humming noise. "Three months, seventeen days, twenty two seconds." He responded simply. "I'm sorry, I was under the impression I was allowed to be acquaintances with who I wanted." "W-Well yeah, but not with him!" Patton protested. "Why not?" Logan countered. "He's dangerous!" "Who's dangerous?" Orange popped back up, now holding a large stack of papers, poorly stapled together. "What'cha talkin bout?" Thomas hissed in pain as he reached for his head. Patton quickly tried to calm him down, reaching out to him but being stopped by the fourth wall. Orange had switched places with Roman, who was stumbling and saying something about rudeness. He now stood next to logan, watching over his shoulder and giving little comments as Logan read it silently.

---
“I do apologize, Virgil.” Logan stated, glancing at Remus for help before turning back to Virgil’s desperate expression. “I am struggling to understand why this is an issue. Please, help me understand what is bothering you.”
Virgil stared at his soulmates. His face flushed as he tried to find the right words to convey the sudden feeling of fight-or-flight response pulling at his mind. “I just—I don’t know. It's a lot.”
“It's just dinner, Doom and Gloom.” Remus chimed in playfully. “You won't even have to get naked or nothing—”
“Not helping, Re.” Virgil whined, massaging his temples as he tried to force away the growing ache in his head .
“Awww—Come on, pretty boy.” Remus cooed, curling an arm around his shoulder. “This ain't nothing you haven’t done before.”
Logan's soft chuckle drew Virgil’s attention up as Remus' limbs slowly wrapped around him. “Now, not that I believe Remus’ ego needs stroking—”
“Oh, Lolo.” Remus giggled in Virgil’s ear, mustache tickling his neck. “You make me blush.”
“Re, stop—” Virgil protested weakly, though he could feel his heartbeat start to slow as he melted into Remus’ arms.  His skin tingled with warmth as Logan cleared his throat, drawing both their attention.
Logan's coy smiled gleamed down at Virgil as he stepped forward, raising a hand to Virgil’s cheek. “As I was saying, Remus is right. None of this is nothing new for you.”
“I know,” Virgil’s gaze fell as he went slack in Remus’ arms. His voice dropped, suddenly feeling embarrassed. “but it's different now.”
“What is different, Virgil?” Logan’s smile turned serious as he dropped down beside them.
Virgil bit his lip, hair falling over his eyes as his voice dropped to a whisper. “This is the first time I've been around everyone as an equal.”
“Oh, love.” Logan reached forward to brush the hair from Virgil’s face as Remus' arms squeezed him. “You've always been an equal.”
“I know. Everyone’s been perfectly nice. It’s just—” Virgil quickly lost his words, sighing in exasperation as he shrank back into Remus. “Listen, I get that this doesn’t make any sense, but—"
“It makes perfect sense, Dr. Doom.” Remus’ soothing voice rumbled in his ear as he sank deeper into his soulmate’s arms. “I mean, we boxed you up like a rabid animal. What were you supposed to think?”
“It’s not—it's not that.”
Silence hung in the air for what felt like an eternity before Logan asked the question Virgil had been evading. “What is it that is really bothering you then, dearest?”
“I'm not special.” Virgil whispered quietly, avoiding his soulmates’ eyes. “I'm surrounded by literal mythical beings and I’m just normal.”
“Well,” Logan chuckled, sharing a knowing look with Remus. “I must say I disagree with that sentiment. In fact, I do believe you may be the most special of all of us.”
Virgil’s eyes filled with confusion as he raised an eyebrow in confusion. “I am not.”
“I mean, going by statistics alone, you are the only full bred human among us. The rest of us are selkies.” Logan smirked coyly as he rested a hand on Virgil’s knee. “Therefore, if judging on rarity alone, you are special above all of us.”
“Only if you’re using the lamest metric possible to judge me on.”
“Oh, I am not finished dearest.” Logan smiled as Virgil grumbled. “You are strong where we are weak.”
“What?”
“You are not bound by a pelt, love.” Logan smirked as he traced his fingers up to where Virgil’s hand rested on his thigh. “Should humans land on the island, we are significantly safer with you around because you do not have the same weaknesses as us.”
Virgil hesitated, trying to ignore the tingling in his arm as Logan traced circles on his skin. “I never thought about it that way.”
“Certainly not, because it is as natural to you as breathing.” Logan smiled, not even looking up as he pulled a soft gasp from Virgil as he continued to gently massage his arm. “Much like you seem to overlook your ability to handle our pelts with such ease as a given attribute. Whereas to us, it is a show of incredible strength and self-restraint beyond that of most of your species.”
“I don’t think I should be praised for not turning you into a mindless drone, Lo.” Virgil raised his lip on disgust at the idea, though the expression was short-lived.
“Neither do I, Virgil.” Logan whispered as his fingertips reached Virgil’s elbow.
The light touches along Virgil’s joint sent gentle, lightning-like pulse up his arm, pulling another light gasp from him. “What are you do—”
“However, I do think it is worth considering that it translates to your other traits.” Logan continued quietly. He barely looked up, deep in focus as he rested Virgil’s hand back on his leg and picked up his other hand. “I have already commented on your near selfless behavior, and though I have my concerns about how your self-esteem fuels that trait, it is commendable nonetheless.”
“Logan—” Virgil whined, letting out a breathless sigh as Logan continued his methodic tracing of his arm.
Logan paused briefly, smirking up at the blissful look on Virgil’s face as Remus giggled behind him “Not to mention, I think it is worth noting that your interactions with Patton show that you are both empathetic and compassionate.”
“What are you doing?” Virgil whispered breathlessly.
“Reminding you of all the reasons you are special, love.” Logan whispered, feigning innocence as he smiled knowingly as Virgil’s eyes fluttered wearily.
“I was talking about whatever you’re doing to my arms, you bastard.” Virgil chided weakly, barely keeping his eyes open.
“Sometimes the energy conduits in your body constrict and stop flowing properly due to prolonged stress.” Logan smiled, stopping his movement as he reached up to brush Virgil’s hair from his eyes. “With some practice, I have figured out how to use the gentle application of pressure to allow the energy to flow more efficiently.”
Virgil groaned, rolling his head back into Remus' shoulder. “Do you ever play fair?”
“No,” Logan smirked, drawing his fingertips down Virgil’s jaw. “I have grown accustomed to getting my way.”
Virgil glared up at him, chewing on his lip. “I know I'm overreacting, but—”
“There is no shame in being nervous, dearest.” Logan interrupted gently, smiling reassuringly at him. “but you've contributed a great deal to our lives already and I hate to see you undermine your own value.”
“I haven’t done anything”
“Oh, please.” Remus hushed him with a smirk. “Your presence has changed everything around here.”
Logan’s expression softened as Virgil rolled his head back in disbelief. “What Remus says is true. Obviously, it goes without saying that you have had a significant effect on Remus and I but I think perhaps you don't see the way your presence has affected the others.”
“What do you mean?”
Logan leaned forward, resting a hand on Virgil’s as he continued. “Patton adores you. He has continued to talk about you constantly since the day you were accidentally introduced to him—”
“—and Jan-Jan won't admit it but he's excited to have someone new around." Remus purred into his ear with a sympathetic smile. “The rest of us have known each other since we were kids and it’s been a bit isolating for him.”
Virgil’s eyes dropped to his lap as he leaned into Remus, processing their words. “Roman's really okay with me being out?”
Logan smiled, subtly squeezing Virgil’s hand. “Roman said so himself, love. You have a place here.”
Virgil slowly let out the breath he'd been holding as his grip tightened on Remus' arm. “Okay.”
“Okay?” Logan prompted hesitantly.
“I'll do it.” Virgil bit his lip, nodding stiffly. “It's not like I can avoid it forever anyway.”
The energy around him shifted quickly and he could feel the excitement almost bubbling around him as his soulmates perked up. Remus' arm uncoiled from around him as Logan pulled him to his feet rather suddenly.
Not for the first time, Virgil was grateful that the selkie's grace made up for his own clumsiness. A deep blush settled onto his cheeks as Logan hooked his waist, pulling him close. The selkie’s hair brushed his forehead lightly, sending shivers down his body as Logan leaned his forehead down to his with a contented sigh.
“Thank you, dearest.” Logan whispered, pulling him toward the door. “I promise it will be well worth your time.”
---
Virgil shuffled behind Logan and Remus reluctantly as they led him through the tunnels. His shoulders curled forward, tensing as he tried to make himself smaller as the narrow tunnel began to open up. His anxiety burned in his chest as the loud sound of rushing water filled his ears. He slowed his pace at the entrance to the cave, pausing entirely as he found himself staring out in awe at the open space.
He barely even noticed as Logan and Remus continue on without him as his eye adjusted to the dim light. Hesitantly, he peeked around the corner, letting his eyes trace up the high walls of the cave disappeared into the shadows. His attention slowly drifted to the sound of rushing water as he lifted his head to see a shimmering glimmer on the far wall. A rush of mist rushed past his face as he stepped out into the open and he let out a small gasp as he realized the far wall was made up by a giant  waterfall.
“Beautiful. Isn't it?”
Virgil jumped at the sudden voice behind him. His body tensed and his head spun over his shoulder, relaxing slightly at the sight of Janus' white pelt standing out against the darkness.
“Yeah,” Virgil dropped his gaze, shoving his hands in his pockets as Janus came to stand next to him. “It's pretty impressive, I guess.”
A smile twitched at the corner of Janus' lips as he glanced down at Virgil. “This island holds many wondrous secrets, but this place has always been a particular favorite of mine.”
Dark circles filled the space under Virgil’s eyes as he tipped his gaze up to Janus, crossing his arms. “Yeah?”
“Certainly,” The dim light glistened on Janus' gilded scars as he nodded quietly. “This island has offered sanctuary to us all and there's no denying how fortunate we were to find such a beautiful home, but personally, I'm only truly at peace when I can breathe in the ocean air. The waterfall isn't the same, but the mist offers its own comfort.”
“You don't ever go out?” Virgil questioned, raising an eyebrow up at Janus as the selkie stared wistfully at the waterfall.
Janus shrugged, casually glancing over at Logan and Remus on the far side of the cave. “Of course we do, but it's not as often as any of us would like.”
“Right.” Virgil muttered, chewing his lip as he glanced up at the distant look in the selkie’s eyes. “I guess Logan mentioned that you guys have to be careful, but that doesn't seem fair to deny yourself that comfort when it's so close.”
Janus sighed, crossing his arms across his chest. “Our choices are what brought us here, so to complain about the consequences is redundant. For better or worse, this is our reality now.”
“You hardly seem to have had a choice in your situation.” Virgil muttered quietly, deep in thought.
“Perhaps not originally,” Janus smirked softly at Virgil’s acknowledgement. “but at this point, it's my choice to follow Roman and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Virgil felt his anxiety rise in his chest at the mention of Roman’s name, but he forced his expression to remain neutral. He tapped his fingertips on his arm as he looked down at the ground, eyeing Janus curiously. “What choices brought the others here?”
Janus’ knowing smirk widened. “Forgive me for pointing out the obvious, but I do believe either of your lovers would be more equipped to answer that question than myself.”
“I know. I just—” Virgil stalled as Janus turned to stare at him. He shifted his gaze away, rolling his eyes as Janus chuckled at him. “Just, never mind.”
“Don’t worry, Virgil. I understand.” Janus smiled gently at him. “It's new and you’re still learning to trust them.”
Virgil stopped chewing his lip, looking up at Logan and Remus on the far side of the cave. They were laughing as they sat next each other worked together to light the kindling for the fire. “I'm not worried about them, Janus. I'm worried about what they’ll think of me.”
“Trust me when I say there's nothing you can do to that will scare them away.” Janus reassured him with a knowing smile, running his fingers down the pelt on his shoulders “Even if they weren’t your soulmates, both of them are too insufferably optimistic about people to think ill of you.”
Virgil smirked rolling back on his ankles. “Hopefully, with that advantage I'll be able to live up to their expectations for me.”
Janus smirked, shrugging his shoulders. “You have nothing to worry about, Virgil. Truly, they adore you already."
“Thanks.”  Virgil smiled faintly casting a grateful glance up at Janus. “I appreciate the—”
“Vee!”
Virgil let out a quiet grunt as a small force curled around the back of his knees, nearly knocking him forward onto the ground. He looked down to see Patton’s wet, brown hair as he curled around Virgil’s legs.
“Hey.” Virgil grinned softly as he knelt down to ruffle the kid's wet hair as he giggled. “Long time, no see, kiddo.”
“Finally, the mystery is solved.”
Virgil jumped instinctively at the sound of Roman’s voice behind him. He barely had a moment to react before a hand rested on his shoulder and he looked up to see Janus smiling down at him reassuringly before turning to move back to Roman.
“And what mystery is that, my dear?” Janus cooed as he stepped toward Roman, reaching out to intertwine his fingers around his soulmate’s. An adoring smile spread across his face as he ran his fingers through Roman’s damp, dark hair.
“Our littlest selkie has started referring to his elders as kiddo, and for the life of me, I couldn't figure out where he'd even learned the word,” Roman’s head tipped up to Virgil with a gentle smile. “but it would seem that I've found it's source.
“I'm sorry.” Virgil replied, running his fingers through his hair as he dropped his gaze.
“No need to apologize, Virgil.” Roman replied immediately, holding a hand out in reassurance as Virgil slowly tipped his head back up to him. “I actually find it quite endearing.”
“Oh.” Virgil blinked. He couldn’t help but be shocked at the gentleness in Roman’s voice as he spoke to him. “Right.”
“Vee—” Patton whined impatiently as he leaned his hands into Virgil to get his attention. “—I went swimming today.”
“Did you now?” Virgil felt his confusion melt away as the kid's eyes sparkled up at him.
“I did!” Patton grinned as he rolled forward on his feet. “I went all the way down to the bottom and I wasn’t even scared.”
“That's amazing, kid.” Virgil chuckled as Patton leaned into shoulder. “You’re a lot braver than me.”
Patton beamed at the praise, absently grabbing a handful of Virgil’s shirt as he rolled forward on his feet in excitement. “I brought something for you.”
“For me?” Virgil blinked in surprise. His eyed flitted up to Roman and Janus, chewing his lip at their warm smiles as he turned back to Patton. The kid was almost bouncing as he lifted his hands up and unfolded them for Virgil.
“Yeah, here.” Patton whispered as he held out a dark, black rock. The outside was rough and unremarkable, but as the kid turned over the rock, Virgil’s jaw dropped. The far side of the rock was broken, and Virgil could see glittering purple crystals inside.
“Pat, wow." Virgil whispered as Patton dropped the crystal in his hand. He stared blankly down at the crystal as he ran his fingers over its smooth surface. Warmth spread across his chest as turned up at Patton with a soft smile. “Are you sure you don’t want to keep it for yourself?”
“It's ‘kay.” Patton murmured as he leaned his head into Virgil’s shoulder, curling his arms around Virgil’s bicep. “You need it for your new room. Janus says the purple ones keep the bad dreams away.”
“My new room?” Virgil echoed in disbelief, feeling his shoulders slump as Patton continued to ramble excitedly.
“I didn't want you to be scared, if you have to turn your lamp off.” Patton finished with a tired smile as Virgil wrapped an arm around his waist.
“That was meant to be a surprise,” Roman chuckled softly above him. “but I suppose the kid's tired rambling is as good a way to find out as any other.”
Virgil stood up, gently lift Patton into his arms with him. He looked up at Roman as Patton leaned his head into his chest. “What do you mean?”
“Logan’s room has been functional up until this point but since you’re going to stay, you need to have a space that’s all your own.” Roman smiled as he leaned back into Janus’ chest. “We've got temporary furnishings to get you by for now, but of course eventually we’ll get you something more to your taste.”
“You would do that for me?” Virgil whispered, feeling his voice quiver with emotion.
“Of course, Virgil.” Roman’s expression softened as Patton leaned on Virgil’s chest. “This is your home now. You need a space that belongs only to you.”
“Maybe, but—” Virgil took a small breath as Roman smiled at him reassuringly. “—but, like, personalizing it seems expensive. I wouldn’t want to put you out.”
“To be honest, Logan’s negotiation techniques are effective and the resources we tend to trade are bountiful.” Roman let out a soft snort, looking over at Janus as he rolled his eye. “Not all of us have Logan’s high taste, but his room is proof that he can get his hands on most anything for you.”
“Thank you.” Virgil whispered, unable to think of anything else to say as an unexpected warmth flooded his body.
“There’s no need to thank me or anyone else. The fact that we were going to make you comfortable was a given when you decided to stay.” Roman smiled patiently as Virgil ducked his head to hide the flush on his cheek as gratitude flooded his chest.  “Now, let's get this kid some food before he passes out on you.”
“S-sure. No problem.” Virgil nodded as Roman reached down n to pull Patton off where he'd laid his head on Virgil’s shoulder. The selkie edged past Virgil, followed shortly by Janus. Virgil rose to his feet and hesitantly turned to follow Roman and Janus as they moved to join Logan and Remus around the roaring fire his soulmates had managed to conjure up. Virgil took his time following. He reached his wrist to his eyes, wiping the tears from his eyes before following behind the selkies.
---
Everything seemed to blur around Virgil as he stepped out to join the family of selkies. He could feel tingling on his skin as the sounds of laughter filled the air and the light of the fire flickered on the walls of the cave. The smell of smoke was dampened as it vented out through the gaps of the edge of the waterfall.
Despite Virgil’s best effort, he could feel his energy draining as the selkies moved around him as they prepared the meal. Time seemed to pass slowly as they moved about their routine around him. He knew he should engage but as time passed their words slowly started to melt into the background of his mind. His skin prickled as he stepped back, watching as Logan tossed a bundle of herbs into the pot in which he was cooking as he conversed quietly with Janus.
A sad smile spread across his face as he gravitated towards the shadows, watching the family smile fondly as Patton climbed up to help Logan as he attempted to prepare some sort vegetable that Virgil didn’t recognize. The simple moments held a certain kind of beauty, but as he stood alone, he couldn’t banish the feeling of being disconnected from everyone else at bay. He leaned into the cave wall, so lost in thought that he nearly jumped out of his skin when a pair of arms wrapped around his waist.
“Why ya lurkin'?”
Virgil instantly relaxed at Remus' voice in his ear. He crossed his arms, subtly leaning back into Remus' chest. “I'm not lurking.”
“You’re creeping in the shadows, pretty boy.” Remus cooed quietly into Virgil’s ear. “That's lurkin' by definition.”
Virgil tensed, feeling heat rush to his cheeks as he dropped his eyes to the ground. “I didn’t mean to—”
“Hey—Relax, man. Creep to your heart's content.” Remus pulled him deeper into the shadows as he rested his head in the nook of Virgil’s shoulder. “It's a little overwhelming. Isn’t it?”
Virgil sighed as Remus’ deep voice resonated through his chest as the warmth of his arms soothed him. “It shouldn’t be. Everyone’s been more than nice about letting me stay here.”
“Ain’t nobody letting you do nothing, babe.” Remus chuckled, pulling Virgil down so he was almost curled in Remus' lap as they rested back among the rocks. “Everyone’s excited to have you here.”
“I—” Virgil tensed as Patton squealed in excitement from across the cave. His attention flitted about the room as the feeling of being detached returned to his body as he watched the happy smiles of the family of selkies. Remus' hand curled into his own as his anxiety peaked. He paused, looking up into Remus’ emerald eyes long enough to bring him back to his body enough and relax into Remus’ warmth. “—Thank you, Re.”
“You don't have to thank me for nothing.” Remus purred as Virgil relaxed back into him. “Shit sucks when you feel out of place, especially when you’re supposed to feel like you’re at home.”
“Fucking stupid is what it is." Virgil muttered as curled into Remus' shoulder, eliciting a chuckle from the man holding him. Virgil smirked up at Remus and his expression softened at the melancholy in the man’s expression as he smiled down at Virgil. “You know what it feels like then?”
“I know.” Remus purred at the surprise in Virgil’s voice. With a dramatic flourish, his hand came to rest on Virgil’s leg as he played up his apparent distress. “It’s difficult to imagine that anyone could resist my dazzling charm, but there’s no accounting for taste.”
Virgil snorted, blushing as Remus’ crooked grin beamed down at him. He chuckled as he shyly dropped his gaze, leaning into Remus' shoulder. “Sounds like their loss.”
Softness spread across Remus’ dramatics melted into a fond smile and firelight flickered in his eyes as he stared down at Virgil. “You surprise me, Virge. I thought for sure you’d take longer than Lolo to warm up to me.”
“What do you mean?”
“Poor bastard actually cried when we found out were soulmates.” Remus chuckled as Virgil’s eyes darted to Logan and back to Remus.
“What?” Virgil's grip tightened on Remus' hand and he started to sit up.
Remus shrugged, smiling down at Virgil as he gently eased him back. “In his defense, we were both only a little older than Patton when we found out, so we were both pretty freaked.”
“You were that young?” Virgil relaxed slightly as Remus' arm curled around the back of his neck.
“Our pods traveled the same waters. We ended up at the same beaches throughout the year.” Remus chuckled. “I actually thought he was a bit of a stick in the mud before I got to know him. Couldn’t take a joke to save his life.”
“Really?” Virgil stared over at Logan across the room, unable to imagine a Logan who was anything less than the sultry man whose unearthly amount of confidence was constantly testing his wit's end.
“Thought I was going to end up giving up my entire life for some prude.” Remus chuckled. “Never In my life would I have imagined that he'd be willing to leave his own pod, let alone that he'd be able to outmatch me on my own bullshit better even than Roman.”
Virgil blinked, turning back to Remus in confusion. “He left his pod?”
“Soulmates are kind of a big deal, especially among selkies. Don’t matter how young you are. Once you’re matched, you’re expected to stay with each other.” Remus sighed. “Most pairs come from the same pods, but since we came from different pods one of us had to give up the life we knew.”
“Seems pretty harsh.” Virgil muttered. “You were just kids. How can they ask that of you?”
“At the time, I thought it was total sea horse shit,” Remus growled as he reluctantly shrugged it off. “but I was glad to have had him around when I did. My own pod didn’t like me much but thanks to him, I always had someone outside of Roman.
Virgil frowned, resting a hand on Remus’ waist as he drew quieter. “I thought you said he was upset.”
“Not upset, just scared.” Remus whispered with a smile. “As if all the overwhelming feelings weren't enough, Lolo was made even more nervous by the fact that I had a bit of a reputation.”
“I'm sure you did—”
“Not like I do now,  Virge.” Remus cut him off abruptly, looking ashamed. “It wasn’t good.”
Virgil paused, surprised by Remus interruption.
“I was an angry kid. Ro was constantly bailing me out of brawls with my podmates.” Remus sighed, glancing over at Roman. “Hell, I can't even imagine if I didn’t have him in my corner. I give my brother a lot of shit, but he's always had my back when I needed him.”
“Why were you mad?”
“Felt out of place and lonely. People were drawn to Roman and repulsed by me.” Remus whispered. “I don’t care what anyone says. If a kid gets the idea in their that they’re not wanted, that shit messes ‘em up for life.”
“I know the feeling.” Virgil replied, quietly fidgeting with his sleeve.
“Gotta say though, my whole attitude changed when Lolo came around.” Remus whispered as a rosy blush spread across his face and he grinned down at Virgil. “God, he's so pretty. You know?”
Virgil smiled as he curled into Remus warmth watching his eyes light up as he talked about Logan.
“I was so scared he wouldn’t even like me. Might be the only time in my life I tried to dull myself down to impress someone.” Remus purred. “I was ready for another rejection but turns he was into all the same weird shit I was.”
“It's too soon for you to be dragging me into all your guys' kinky shit, Re.” Virgil teased, holding Remus'
“Fuck off.” Remus giggled.  “We were kids, you freak.”
Virgil's breath caught in his throat as Remus curled his face into his neck. He squirmed, wrapping his arms around Remus’ neck in an attempt to stop him from tickling his neck with his mustache.
Remus let out a long breath Virgil curled across his lap, hands wrapped around his neck. “I thought I was alone in the world and then I suddenly had a friend who was willing to swim to the bottom of the harbor to dig up the best worms or see how far we could swim under the ice. It was like goddamn magic.”
Virgil smiled, reaching a hand up to run his hand through Remus’ dark curls. “That's really sweet, Re.”
“It was easily the best thing to happen in my life until I met you.” Remus purred, grin widening as heat rushed to Virgil’s cheeks. ““I can tell this is going to be just as life-changing.”
“I didn’t know you were such a sap, Re.” Virgil dipped his head into Remus' chest, hoping the shadows might hide the bright red flush spreading across his face.
“Can't help it.” Remus smirked. “You’re cute when you blush.”
“Shut up.”
Remus hummed contentedly as Virgil retreated deeper into his chest. He smiled, placing a gentle kiss on Virgil’s temple. “How are you feeling now, stormcloud?”
“Better.” Virgil admitted quietly, realizing he'd lost his nervousness as he listened to Remus.
“Good.” Remus smiled. “You’re going to find your place here, but while you’re figuring it out, you can always fall back on me when everything gets a little too overwhelming.”
“The same goes for myself, Virgil.”
Virgil blinked. He looked up to see Logan lingering next to them, his back to the firelight as he stared down at them.
“If ever you are feeling uncertain or overwhelmed, I hope you know you can seek refuge with myself or Remus.” Logan smiled as he slipped down next to them. “While I hope you do continue to join our family gatherings, there is no pressure to do so all at once. Stepping back when you need to is important for your own well-being and that is always our first priority.”
“Thank you. Both of you.” Virgil whispered, feeling warmth rise in his chest as his soulmates stared down at him with gentleness in his eyes. “Both of you. I-I don’t even know what to say.”
“Then say nothing, love.” Logan whispered with a soft smile as he ran a hand through Virgil’s hair. “Your feelings are shared by us all.”
Virgil nodded quietly, feeling the warmth spread from his chest to the rest his body as Logan rose to his feet and offered him a hand up.
“Now, I do hope you are hungry, because dinner is ready and everyone would like to see more of you.” Logan whispered, intertwining his fingers with Virgil’s. “if you are ready for that, of course.”
“I am.” Virgil’s heart jumped in in chest as his soulmates closed in on his sides. He'd never felt so relaxed they led him back to the campfire.
Roman was the first to look up as they approached. A gentle smile spread across his face as he looked up from the pot. “Sit anywhere you like, Virgil. I'll bring a dish to you.”
“Thank y—”
“No! Sit next to me!”
Virgil smiled as Patton jumped up to clear the spot next to him.
“Patton—There's no need to be so demanding.” Janus chided him softly.
Patton stopped, his small body leaned on the rocks for a moment as he considered Janus' words. After a brief moment, he quickly turned back to Virgil with a wide smile. “Pretty please will you sit with me?”
Virgil smiled at the kid’s enthusiasm, stuffing his hands into his pockets as he dropped down next to the kid. “Well, how can I say no to such a polite request?”
He could see Janus roll his eyes as the kid squealed and scooted over to him. His eyes lingered for a moment as Patton curled his fingers around Virgil’s hand.
“Have you picked a room yet, Vee?” Patton asked, leaning into his shoulder.
Virgil chuckled, as the kid’s eyes sparkled up at him. “Not yet, Pat. I haven’t had a chance to look around yet.”
“I think you should have the room next to mine.” Patton suggested proudly.
“That is certainly an option if you would never like to sleep again, Virgil.”  Janus turned his gaze from the empty air around them back to Virgil with a smirk.
Virgil chuckled as Janus’ sarcasm didn’t seem to register in Patton’s mind as he looked eagerly up at Virgil. “I'm not sure, kiddo. I might have to see a few places first.”
“I can show you tomorrow.” Patton shouted gleefully. “I know all the best ones.”
“Sounds great, Pat.” Virgil smiled quietly. “but I don't think it's up to me if we can do that.”
“That's perfectly fine if that's what you want to do, Virgil.”
Virgil turned up his head, surprised to see Roman above him, hand extended as he offered Virgil a bowl. He hesitantly let go of Patton’s hand to take the bowl of soup from Roman, glancing cautiously at the faces around him.
“Of course, I do think that someone should accompany you both since you are unfamiliar with the tunnels, Virgil,” Roman smiled at his blank expression as he continued. “but I see no reason why that cannot be arranged.”
“I would be more than happy to accompany Virgil and Patton tomorrow.” Logan offered, dropping down next to him as Roman offered him a bowl. “I believe it would be wise anyway to have the input if someone whose familiar with each to point out potential cons as you choose your new living space.”
“Very well, but Patton will be your responsibility, Lo.” Roman continued, absently handing out bowls of food as he went. “It's not fair to place that expectation on Virgil until he’s settled in a bit more, especially when Patton has a habit of wandering off on his own."
“Of course. I do not mind the resp—"
“Really?” Virgil finally sputtered out. “You’re actually going to let me take the kid out tomorrow?”
Roman paused as Virgil’s timid voice broke his concentration and he turned back to face him. Guilt seemed to flash across his face as Virgil stared up at him in disbelief. “Of course, Virgil. Your restrictions have been lifted. We discussed this already.”
“I know—” Virgil whispered quietly, heat rising in his face as all the eyes in the room turned to him.  “I guess I assumed the kid was an exception.”
Roman’s eyes softened as Virgil ducked his head down, running a hand through his hair. “No exceptions, Virgil. You’re part of our family now.”
Virgil’s mouth hung agape as he glanced around the warm expressions of the faces around him. He blinked, absently wrapping an arm around Patton as the kid leaned into his side.
“There are no more tests, love.” Logan whispered, curling an arm around his waist from beside him as he placed a gentle kiss on Virgil’s temple. “You can breathe now.”
Virgil nodded at Logan in apparent shock. He swallowed glancing around at the others as they nodded their own affirmations and turned back to their own conversations, leaving him to ponder the new information. A warmth welled in his chest as he settled in to the subtle contact of Logan and Patton on each side of him and slowly, a smile spread across his face as he brought a spoonful of the savory soup to his lips, listening to the family of selkies as their excited voices filled the air around him.
Somehow the sound of their voices around him wasn't so overwhelming anymore. The feelings of anxiety he'd had seemed to fade to the back of his mind as the hours the night began to pass him by, filled by the sounds of stories of his new family. A warm feeling of gratitude filled his chest that Logan had insisted on him coming out. He relaxed into Logan's shoulder, feeling the warmth of the warmth of the fire as he learned more about the wonderful people who had welcomed him into their home and he was happy.

To say it was awkward for Patton the next morning, waking up to Remus’ arms around him, would be an understatement. But that awkwardness was not alone, Patton felt trapped in an oven of emotions. Fear, comfort, worry, vulnerability, peace, trust, modesty, relief, all shooting around his body and threatening to knock him out of the bed. He’d never had a one night stand but imagined this might be what it was like. He tried to focus on what to do next. He could try to get up and leave without waking Remus, it wouldn’t solve the situation but it would save him from the awkwardness about to happen, or he could wake up Remus and face it now. Unsurprisingly Patton chose the first option. He carefully picked up Remus’ arm from on top of him, watching his face for any sign of waking up. Patton slowly put Remus’ arm back down on the bed beside him. He let go of the arm and sighed. He wished Remus had woken up first, he was actually brave and probably would face Patton. He stood and ran a hand through his hair. As Patton walked over to the bathroom he heard a loud ringing come from the bed. He quickly turned and locked eyes with Remus as he woke up. Remus began fumbling around for his phone. Patton quickly darted into the bathroom and slammed the door shut. He leant against the door and tried to calm down enough to hear what was happening. Remus eventually found his phone amongst the blankets and slid off the alarm. He saw he had a few hurried messages from Janus.
Janny Fanny at 10:15: “Did Patton get home yet?”
Janny Fanny at 10:44: “I’m pretty sure he isn’t coming home dude.”
Janny Fanny at 11:03: “If you’re fucking Patton can you at least tell me you won’t be home?”
Janny Fanny at 7:56: “Did you really spend the night there?”
Janny Fanny at 8:00: “Are you okay?!”
Janny Fanny at 8:08: “Remus this isn’t funny! Please tell me you’re okay!”
Janny Fanny: at 8:19: “Virgil is worried! Call him please!”
Janny Fanny at 8:24: “Please Remus!! Virgil is freaking out!!”
Remus quickly called Janus who answered immediately. “Remus what the fuck?!” Janus said as soon as he picked up. “Are you okay? Where are you?” Remus could hear the worry in his friend’s voice. It wasn’t unusual for him to not come home but it was for him not to send some kind of message to anyone. He looked over to the door Patton was hiding behind. “Geez, Jan. Calm your tits.” Remus replied calmly. “I got home late and left early to help my folks gather some sheep that fucked off last night.” Remus lied. He wasn’t embarrassed, if anything it felt… right. But it was clear Patton was embarrassed with whatever happened. “I know you’re lying. Just get home from wherever you are so we can finish the paint job at the bakery.” Janus said before hanging up. Remus threw his phone down and rubbed his face. He didn’t want Patton to be upset, the whole point of him staying was so he wouldn’t be. But now he was. Remus stood up and walked over to the door. “Are you okay, Patty Cake?” He asked softly through the door. Patton jumped away in fear. He didn’t respond, he didn’t know how to. “I’m sorry I didn’t leave, when you asked me to stay and I just assumed you meant for the night.” Remus tried to reason. Patton felt bad for reacting how he did. He was just scared. Remus leaned against the door. “Please talk to me.” Patton wanted to, but he didn’t know what to say. Remus waited for another minute before pushing away. “I’m leavin’. I’ll be back in a few with Janus. We’ll just pretend this didn’t happen.” That wasn’t what Patton wanted. He didn’t regret what happened, not at all. He just didn’t know what to do. Patton looked in the mirror and tried to gather the strength to face Remus. He went over and flung open the door, but it was too late. Remus had left already.
About half an hour later Remus’ truck pulled up outside again. Patton watched out the window as Janus and Remus got out and walked towards the bakery. He could only just hear them talking, the words were muffled so he leaned forward to try and hear more. “I didn’t tell them, Virgil did!” Janus defended as he closed the door of the green truck. “Yeah, you just told Virgil I was fucking Patton, who then told my twin.” Remus protested. “Well last I heard you were waiting for him to get home, you didn’t come home and didn’t respond to any messages, and with your reputation it wasn’t that much of a stretch to assume.” Janus argued. “Besides, it’s not like you’re telling us where you actually were.” “It’s none of your fucking business.” Remus hissed back. “And you’re the reason my twin is coming for my neck so why would I tell you?” Remus flung open the door and entered the bakery. Patton couldn’t hear their conversation anymore. This whole situation was wrecking Patton. He felt guilty for worrying everyone and causing issues for Remus, he felt confused about what this all meant for him and Remus. He had just started accepting he had feelings for Remus, but how could he even imagine telling him now? Patton paced anxiously around his house, stuck in his own head. He had to focus on something else. He plucked out three ingredients and set the oven to preheat. Whenever he was stressed he would bake, it was like second nature. Something easy and clear he could focus on. Never anything fancy, just simple little recipes he’d made a thousand times. Just like this. Quick three ingredient scones. He dumped in the flour and butter and began mixing by squeezing them in his hands. He kept doing this until the mixture became almost like breadcrumbs, then he made a small well in the middle and poured in the milk. He twirled a wooden spoon in his hands before stabbing it into the bowl. With fluid flicks of his wrist he folded the contents into a soft and light dough. It needed something. He threw open a cabinet and danced his fingers along the different jars. He let his emotions surge through his hand and take out a few different ingredients. A pinch of cayenne, a dash of oregano and rocket, a generous amount of parmesan. He floured the bench and smacked the dough onto it. He folded the dough in his hands again and again. Pressing, rolling, squeezing, kneading. He took out a glass and began cutting out circles of dough and placed them on a tray before shoving them all into the oven. After a few minutes the smell of herbs filled the apartment and wafted down to the bakery, cutting through the various fumes. It made Remus’ stomach cramp as he painted varnish across a wooden table. Even Janus stopped for a moment when it reached him. “Can you go ask your boyfriend if we can have some?” Janus asked, going back to his painting. Remus scoffed. “Don’t.” He said in an annoyed tone. "You didn’t have dinner last night and you haven’t eaten today.” Janus reminded him. Remus rolled his eyes. Patton hadn’t come down to greet them like usual and Remus wasn’t going up there if he wasn’t wanted. “I’ll be fine.” Remus defended. Janus took off the mask covering his nose and mouth and turned to Remus. He looked over at him, taking in his annoyed face and tired eyes. “It wasn’t a hook-up.” Janus said. “Or if it was, it didn’t go well.” “I already said I didn’t want to talk about it.” Remus interrupted. Janus placed down his spraycan. “Okay. Bottle it up until you push him away and he hates you.” Janus argued. “That sounds like a great plan. I mean it worked well with Roman.” The bell above the door chimed. “What about Roman?” Roman asked as they walked in. Remus shot a poisonous look at Janus. Neither man said anything. Roman gave them a stare that could cut through burnt bread. “Really?” Both men shrugged and returned to their work. Roman walked over to Remus and pulled him up by his ear. “Ow! It was Janus who said it!” Remus shouted. “What happened last night?” Roman asked. Remus’ face fell. “I told you it wasn’t a good idea! If you hurt the poor thing I
swear I’ll throw you off the roof again.” Remus looked around and sighed while slipping off his gloves. He pulled Roman outside so Janus couldn’t hear them.
But Patton could.
“We didn’t hook up, alright?” Patton heard Remus say outside his window. He looked out to see the twins talking. He needed something to focus on while the scones cooked so he listened. Besides, they seemed to be talking about him anyway. “We all know you were here last night.” Roman crossed their arms. Remus ran a hand through his hair. He remembered how embarrassed Patton was earlier. “Look even if we did it’s none of ya business!” Remus snapped. “We’re adults, we can do what we want. If I wanted to, I could go up there right now and make out until we couldn’t breathe!” Patton blushed at the thought. “Look, Remus I jus-” Roman started but was quickly cut off. “You said yourself that it seemed I really liked the guy! You think I’d ruin somethin’ like that with a fling?” Remus pressed. Patton covered his mouth and backed away from the window. He felt like he just heard something he shouldn’t have. The conversation continued without Patton listening. “I’m not a kid anymore! I can make my own damn choices and keep them to my own damn discretion!” Remus huffed. Roman took a moment to process but was largely unshaken by Remus’ outburst. They’d dealt with them for 28 years. “So was that little rant meant to convince me you didn’t sleep together?” Roman asked. Remus groaned in frustration so Roman put a hand on his shoulder. Remus shook it off. “You don’t get it! I don’t need you three hoverin’ over my love life! Have you considered there’s a reason I’m not tellin’ ya?!” Remus flung an arm up towards Patton’s apartment angrily. “I’m not the only one involved!” Roman looked up at the apartment then back down at their twin. His face contorted with anger. Roman sighed. “Alright. We’ll stop bugging you.” Roman finally gave in. Remus was surprised. It wasn’t like them to actually agree with him. “But please, don’t hold it all in. If something not good does happen then please come to one of us.” Roman put their hands on Remus’ arms, his shoulders slacked. He nodded slightly.
Patton pulled the scones out of the oven as his head spun. Remus had feelings for him. He began picking up scones and cutting them in half, hands used to the heat of fresh made goods. He didn’t know how to process the information he’d just learned. He felt… bad. He forced Remus to stay over, keep it a secret, then invaded his privacy. He felt like a terrible person. Only terrible people would do that stuff. And to make it worse he was giving Remus the cold shoulder. After everything Remus was doing for him he was just ignoring him because of his own stupid mistakes. Maybe not mistakes, he did enjoy being with Remus last night. So why did he feel bad about it? Patton placed down the last scone and looked over them. He had someone wanting him to feel better so much that they held him all night. Remus had done it by choice. He shouldn’t feel bad. Patton buttered a few of the scones and put them on a plate. He pushed down his feelings and walked down to the bakery. He put on a smile as he pushed open the back door. “Anyone need a snack?” Patton greeted warmly. He walked over to them. “Remus, I can’t see what he has but eat one.” Janus said without looking away from his painting. Patton walked over to Remus who shyly plucked one of the scones off of the plate. Patton wasn’t used to him being so timid. “Thanks for helping me last night.” Patton said. Everyone turned to him. Remus blushed slightly. “I was a mess and it meant a lot that you stayed.” Remus’ small smile dissolved any and all guilt Patton was feeling. He leant forward and gave Remus a one armed hug while holding the plate in the other. Remus gripped Patton tightly. After everything that happened he was so scared he had lost Patton. The hug lingered a little too long. Roman cleared their throat and the two men separated. “Remus. Eat.” Janus shouted from the ladder. Remus quickly took a bite of the scone. It was fluffy and flavorful. He’d tried to make scones in the past but they never turned out good. This… this was amazing. He looked over to where Roman was also taking a bite. “Patty Cake, you have to give me this recipe!” Remus enthused. Patton blushed. He was usually okay with Remus complimenting his baking, he was making stuff to sell and therefore impress anyway, but this wasn’t something he’d considered good. Just some stress baking. “Uh it’s just a simple scone. Flour butter and milk.” Patton said shyly. Remus swallowed the rest of the scone nearly whole and grabbed another. “I make them nearly every day for the bakery, I can show you next time I make them. You’ll probably love kneading the dough.” Patton walked across the room to offer a scone to Janus. Remus watched. “Yeah.” He mumbled. “Or maybe I’ll just have to come in every day and buy out your whole stock.” Patton giggled and Remus couldn’t help but stare. From Patton’s slightly pink cheeks to the little dimple on his chin. Had he always been so beautiful? He felt like running up and kissing Patton right then and there but he held himself back. Something had changed. Maybe it was seeing Patton so vulnerable, or maybe the way his heart raced as Patton wrapped around him in that bed or even the threat of losing him. His feelings were getting louder, his fantasies were getting stronger, he struggled to hold himself together. It felt like a sugar rush as he stood up and grabbed Patton’s hand. “Patton…” Remus said aimlessly but with a sense of urgency. Patton was dizzy just from Remus touching his hand. He looked up at the taller man. His eyes focused on Remus’ jaw, he couldn’t help but think of how it would feel to have that stubble brush against his face. Roman and Janus both froze and watched. Remus wasn’t sure what to say. He just wanted to stare at Patton’s face forever. He looked slightly behind Patton and remembered that Janus and Roman were both still in the room. “Uh we… Valentine’s Day… us.” Remus eventually managed. Patton lit up. “Oh right I didn’t tell you what time to be here for the class.” Patton interpreted as he pulled away from Remus to get a piece of paper. Remus could barely
breathe, Patton was clueless to the state he was in. And the fact Remus was trying to ask him on a date. “It starts at five thirty so I need you here at five to help set up. Is that okay?” Remus glanced at Roman who was enjoying the whole scene with a smug smile. “Yeah. Perfect.” Remus sighed as he sat back down next to his twin. Roman raised an eyebrow at him. “Don’t.”

All in the Family
Chapter 127: Out of the Fire
At first James thought the concussive, ear-splitting shrieking noise was coming from him. He knew he wanted to scream, but the air felt lodged in his throat now, because he couldn't see Sirius! Had he been vanished into an unknown abyss for dying in this future!?
They were in a very dark room and something massive was moving about, a sunset was forcing painful light into their eyes from cracks around the edges of heavy curtains only illuminating movement but no distinct shape. The rank smell of several unidentifiable things left him gasping and wheezing and he just kept flailing madly around, he wouldn't stop until he found him!
Something painfully tight latched onto his neck and forced him to bend over double, he shrieked in fury, trying to pull away and blindly going for his wand, but he couldn't find it! He must have dropped it when he landed-
"Prongs, stop, moving," Remus hissed in his ear with more stress than he ever would have believed him capable of, hand probably white-knuckled on his neck, he was holding so tight and suffocating him a bit, but it was obvious Moony didn't dare let up.
Heart still thudding, the maddening scene of Voldemort murdering his brother slowly ebbed from his eyes to really take in their surroundings.
Buckbeak finally began to calm now that all racket had deceased, but he was still clicking his beak in fury even as all of them edged as far away as they could bent double. He was standing much taller than usual, and James's eyes finally adjusted to see him perched on a bed. There was fresh hay and sawdust all around, plus a bag of dead rats sitting where the pillows should, leaning against a wooden frame like a mock bag of feed. There were deep scratches in the posts, ruining whatever design had once been inlaid, like Buckbeak often rubbed his sharp beak against it. The real problem of why he didn't go back to his meal came apparent when they saw all the blood around him wasn't from his food, but a deep cut in his front leg.
Sirius finally came into view, and James breathed in relief and tried to move towards him, but Remus kept him in the forced bow with bruising force as Padfoot began gently, "hey there buddy, wow that looks like a problem. I bet it hurts, how'd you manage that huh? Come here Buckbeak, come on, I promise I'll summon up whatever your favorite is if you let me have a look."
Maybe it was the gentle tone, maybe it was the familiarity of the person even if he was several years younger, in Remus's opinion it was just Sirius's innate ability to soothe anyone if he wanted to with that natural charisma when he unleashed it and nobody could resist. Regardless, Buckbeak finally folded his wings and made a pitiful cooing noise as he nudged his head against his shoulder and shuffled forward on three legs while Sirius kept up his inane chatter and carefully climbed up beside him, never moving to fast.
There were already some bandages and cotton balls waiting open and ready at the foot of the king sized bed, Sirius ruddy hoped someone was up here helping the poor thing out. He could now only wish it was himself though, it would be the most useful thing he'd ever done in his life at this point instead of- nope! He was doing it now, taking every care to keep chatting with the hippogriff as he cleaned the wound and wrapped it up tight. He didn't dare draw his wand to try anything else, these beasts were notoriously shy about magic in their presence.
The others began cautiously rising back to normal, and Buckbeak allowed it as Sirius began hand-feeding him from the bag of rats. His tail was still thrashing, binocular vision able to track everything on both sides of his head, but he remained at Sirius's side standing on the bed rather than trying to chase them off, which would do no good, he'd already seen Evans try the door out of the corner of his eye.
James tried edging forward, but Buckbeak spat a dead rat in his face, tearing up his bedding with his good claw as he heavily pawed the ground. Sirius reached up and pat his beak while catching James's eye with the most comforting smile he could offer. "Relax Prongs," his tone was still more honeyed than it had ever been speaking to his best mate, he usually reserved such a thing for teachers he was trying to flatter out of detention. It never worked on anyone but this hippogriff before. "I'm, I'm fine-"
He couldn't keep lying, his voice shook and his fingers began to tremble and the restless animal easily sensed his distress and began ruffling his feathers in unease. Sirius quieted himself and began running his hand along the gray feathers now, stopping to scratch in between the shoulder blades and the back of the neck, those hard-to-reach places that had him almost cooing with content and finally relaxing into him.
No, he was not fine. Of all the trouble he'd ever caused his friends, this was by far the most grievous one yet, now with Harry added to the mix! His godson, his poor godson forced to see this, live Voldemort's pleasure of murdering him! All because he couldn't do one stupid thing right and suck it up in this house. Perhaps he should take a page out of Wormtail's book and start distancing himself from them, give them all a break from his never ending catastrophes!
They watched in distress as Sirius worked himself up to a silent storm, he was clearly making the animal ill at ease as well no matter the affection given, so when Smith grabbed the book up off the ground and began reading, both startled badly yet again. Buckbeak threw his wings to their full extent and shrieked at her while Sirius flinched and had no time to duck, earning the retaliation of being thrown into the heavy curtains and sent them all on top of him, throwing the rest of the room into sharp relief.
Out of the Fire, into the frying pan, Remus finished in his head as he and James rushed forward to help untangle him while the powerful horse legs kicked wildly at the wall, sending a splintering noise in the very foundation while the bellowing shrieks began again.
Alice dropped the book and immediately bowed in apology, mildly appeasing the hippogriff enough he didn't lunge off the bed to attack her at least. He still didn't seem able to settle though, making a keening noise of longing and clicking his beak as he began pacing restlessly on the bed.
It was the most splendid thing in here. The midnight walls had silvery threads in the design up to the ceiling like veins that seemed to seep right down to the canopy that was torn to shreds, but the grandeur ended there. Regulus had only been in here once to even know such a thing was in his parents' room, otherwise it was unrecognizable as all of their things had vanished. They were forbidden from entering, but obviously that hadn't stopped Sirius's purge of the house, which of course made perfect sense why Sirius had put his ruddy pet up here.
His brother smiled, just a bit when his mates got him back on his feet and he realized the same of his own destruction. Regulus longed to throw at him it was doing shit like this why he brought so much of his own troubles on himself, he'd never really tried to make peace with mum and dad. Instead he seemed to go out of his way to do things they dislike just to complain that they hated him.
Regulus cringed at the idea of going back and attempting the same. He'd never be so blatant and in their face at it as his brother, but he didn't much like the idea of them shouting at him the way they did Sirius if he told them he had other plans for his life. He still longed for some kind of peaceful balance.
Potter and Lupin both seemed reluctant to let him back out of arm's length, but the creature refused to settle until Sirius got back on the bed with him and snapped dangerously at anyone who tried to join him. Sirius offered him another rodent carcass and waited until he'd gnashed away at it before nodding back at Smith with that calm aloof air once more he was so familiar with, it was impossible to tell what he was really thinking when he shut down like that, just how they were raised. Mother may actually be proud of him at that moment.
Now his idiot brother was going to die because he'd been in this house too long and refused to listen to anyone, but at least he'd have someone around to notice like Harry and Lupin. The shock of it all felt like an insulting blow to his world view. Sirius was going to be murdered for doing the opposite of what he'd done, was there really no right answer?
She began again in an attempt at a soothing tone like his, and though the bird head was tossed in agitation, he didn't throw his companion aside again but allowed the noise as it did him no harm and her voice was very soft, with fear. She read with dread of poor Harry's panic as he tore off for the Hospital Wing for McGonagall, who wasn't there. She'd been transferred to St. Mungo's.
Harry only had Snape to turn to for help, and that idea didn't seem to be occurring to him as his friends caught up and he had to explain the whole maddening concept to them.
Regulus listened with pity for Harry having to live through this, but something else was ebbing to the surface as he watched the Potter in here. Envy. Sirius kept looking to him, offering him that carefree smile as he kept patting at the beast and even winking at Lupin like this was some joke, making silly faces and even starting to hum a tune under his breath as he continued scratching at the animal, and when he wasn't doing that he was just the haughty Black heir. For all anyone could tell his godson was out having a picnic with him. It was a very good farce a lesser person would have fallen for.
Sirius didn't even look at him. Not to gloat this was the proper way to go against the Dark Lord, not to sneer and mock him for being up in this room he shouldn't be or even to have a laugh about it. He'd known for a very long time now James Potter was his brother's equal in a way he never could be, but this hadn't felt quite so insulting until this very moment where he clearly wasn't even going to be a passing blip as his brother was probably over there pondering what his last thoughts would be.
Frank had his hands on Alice's waist as she read, holding her close as her voice trembled for Harry's pain. They didn't even know Sirius, not really, they felt they had a better understanding of the man he'd become through Harry than the teenager who seemed so determined to ignore the proceedings.
Their aching sympathy though didn't dim their downright confusion at the circumstances. He caught Lily's eyes and saw the same confused expression as she watched him, Hermione's pertinent questions that had no effect on Harry had the three of them very worried something about this wasn't feeling right.
Sirius shouldn't have been leaving this home for this plan to be possible, but this was the same man who'd broken out of Azkaban, that part wasn't so unbelievable no matter who told him what. Why would You-Know-Who need him to get this weapon though? That was a very stumping question, and one they hoped they weren't privy to. If Harry dipped back into the other's mind and heard, the answer would give no relief to these transgressions.
Ron's answer was, plausible, but one look at Regulus didn't make it hold much weight. He'd been killed very soon after his entrance, it seemed laughable he'd even been in You-Know-Who's presence, let alone had some key of knowledge.
Ginny and Luna arriving stopped the impending argument, Harry was so desperate with anger by now that it was a miracle a plan was agreed by all to use Umbridge's fireplace to check this out.
The only one he spoke to for his troubles was Kreacher, laughing about the entire painful situation. Sirius really wasn't there, and now they may get a live version of hearing the great and mighty Black turn out like them if he was tortured while Harry was forced to watch. Neville now being in the very room with them nearly made reality splinter before their eyes.
Lily finally dragged her eyes off of James Potter's white face and buried her own away in her hands so she didn't have to see his reaction when Harry finally remembered Severus Snape was a member of the Order. She didn't even believe anymore he would have helped Harry, she didn't believe much of anything anymore. Here she was, nearly crying in sorrow for these two and only able to imagine her poor son losing someone again, and hating her best friend, what on Earth was this future? How could it be possible something like this could exist?
Something in her sparked traitorously as she looked back up when she heard him lying to Umbridge. Veritaserum was far from the only truth serum, and for him to pretend he wouldn't have any others was laughable. She turned mechanically back to Potter to see his silent screaming was still in full blast, but his wand was in Lupin's hand and he didn't even seem to care. Even the simple fact that he hadn't a reaction for Severus and only had eyes for his best friend felt right to her. If he'd gone about insulting him now, at a time like this, she'd know he was heartless. Instead she was now reasonably confident, almost hopeful again that Severus really was still in the Order for Dumbledore's secret reason rather than any plot of You-Know-Who's. Sev had no reason to lie to Umbridge and help Sirius anymore than he would Harry, but that's exactly what he was doing.
Harry seemed to miss this revelation, he watched his potions teacher go with the purest loathing once more, and she couldn't blame him, after everything Snape had done to her boy. She wrapped her arms around herself as if torn in two. Was this just another false wish then? She still wanted to see in him that childhood friend? It didn't excuse what he'd called her, but maybe if he really saved Sirius Black's life it would show he wanted to change...
Alice nearly shrieked and wanted to throw the book away from herself when Umbridge's next solution was to use the torture curse on Harry. Buckbeak was still no calmer in the heavy environment and glowered at her, but Sirius was quick to keep his attention, a murmuring promise of more spoils for him as soon as he could. He was starting to lose his composure though, they could all see the cracks now. He wasn't even looking at his best mate anymore, his fingers were trembling in the soft texture and his hair was covering most of his face.
The two had once been each other's salvation in escaping Hogwarts, Sirius fought the mad desire to try so now. Throw open that window and ride off into the sunset on the back of the hippogriff, maybe animals could come and go from this nightmare.
He knew he couldn't though, he felt like a coward for even thinking it. His friends might be better off without him, but damn it all, even Hermione was coming up with quite the story to Umbridge's face and got Harry out of that situation, the three of them heading off to the Forbidden Forest! If that girl, who hadn't even wanted to help him moments ago, thinking Harry was having some nightmare, could manage that, he'd suck it up and be there for them any way they wanted him.

Prom Queen: Chapter 2

Word Count: 1,900
Pairings: Endgame Prinxiety, Platonic LAMP, more could be included at a later point
Warning: Swearing, food mentions (Let me know if I missed anything, this one seemed fairly tame!)
______________________________
Summary: He missed Roman. High school had been, in the grand scheme of things, largely without his best friend.
(Make sure to read the notes at the end if you want to hear my thoughts on the chapter! As always, feel free to let me know if you want to be added to my taglist for this story or just my art and writing ones in general! Enjoy!)
______________________________
High school wasn’t great but it certainly didn’t seem to be terrible either. That’s what Virgil was gathering from the whole experience anyways. It definitely didn’t hold as much of the awkwardness in terms of trying to find himself and who he was as a person like middle school had brought about.
But still, there were still a fair share of complications. Roman’s popularity throughout the years had started to become one of them.
Neither of them had honestly expected it really. Theater put Roman in the spotlight, both literally and figuratively, that was where part of his newfound popularity came from. With that little bit of exposure, people started to take notice of him.
First it had been Roman running late to English a few times when they started out freshman year.
That expanded to Roman joining some clubs Virgil was content to stay out of for a couple days in the week.
More interaction with more people meant Roman got to talking with some interesting people from student council through his Model UN club meetings, including a familiar face from theater serving as their stage manager in the upcoming fall production.
“Hey guys, there’s someone I’d like you to meet!” Roman said excitedly as he dragged along a guy that looked around their grade, firm hands on his shoulders. Roman beamed as Virgil and Patton looked up from Virgil’s phone. “This is Logan!”
Patton smiled at Logan and held out a hand. “Patton Hart, it’s nice to meet you Logan!”
At the sight of Patton’s hand reached out to him, Virgil noticed Logan visibly relax, reaching out to shake Patton’s.
“Hello Patton,” Logan merely said with a nod.
“And of course, Logan, I’ve told you about my best friend Virgil,” Roman’s voice cut through, Virgil’s gaze flickering over to the impossibly widening grin on Roman’s face at that little detail.
Logan nodded once more. “Ah yes, Roman talks about you often.”
“Nothing but bad things I assume?” Virgil snorted, smirking at Roman’s mock gasp of offense.
“No, he speaks rather highly of you, Virgil. Oftentimes it gets in the way of things such as letting him running lines and letting me work on my own work for his play,” Logan commented, giving Roman a pointed look towards the latter half of his statement.
“A boy can’t talk about his best friend? Harsh, Specs!”
Patton laughed at the two of them bickering. “So how’d you and Logan meet?”
“Model UN, he’s done a much better job than I have! He’s trying to show me the ropes but he’s definitely much smarter than me at it!” Roman said with a chuckle, sitting down with Logan doing so as well.
“He says that but he isn’t doing too poorly, honestly Roman,” Logan sighed.
“Yeah yeah, but not as good as you. Now hush and let me tell them my story!”
Roman considered joining student council by the end of freshman year but decided theater was already a large commitment.
Sophomore year rolled around before Virgil knew it and Roman was cast as the lead role for the fall production as well as getting on the sophomore homecoming court.
Homecoming carnival was fairly nice as Roman practically dragged him and Logan along. Virgil didn’t have half a bad time though he admittedly just stayed by Patton who was working at one of his club booths. Roman was surrounded by too many people at one point for Virgil to really want to follow him anyways.
Spring semester of sophomore year was pretty uneventful aside from Roman somehow getting even more popular. Virgil could barely get a word of conversation in with him after their school’s spring production of Beauty and the Beast, despite him going to nearly every night of the show’s run. Patton was good company during one of the nights though and the two went out for milkshakes afterwards.
“Virgil! Gosh, I really don’t need you seeing me cry,” Roman laughed as he scooped Virgil up in a tight hug before pulling away. “You didn’t have to come for closing night!”
“I wanted to, you know?” Virgil asked. “Also holy shit are you hot.”
“Oh trust me, I know! My sheer beauty is truly a thing to behold!” Roman teased, only for Virgil to shove him with a snort.
“Congratulations Roman, you did a great job!” one of their classmates said in passing.
“Thank you Cissy!” Roman called after her with a proud grin on his face.
“No, you know what I mean, you must be dying under the lights,” Virgil chuckled.
“Oh, that-!”
“Roman, you did amazing, look at you!” another person said, coming over to give Roman a hug.
“Thank you, and thank you for coming!” Roman replied.
“How could I not? You did great!” the woman said. “Hey, have you seen Chloe around? I’ve been trying to find the poor girl for ages, she might’ve been swamped.”
“I think she might’ve gone to go change, I think she’ll be out soon!”
Virgil zoned out a little as Roman continued to make conversation for a little longer.
“Ro, you down for going to get ice cream after you free yourself from your wire prison?” Virgil asked once he thought Roman’s attention was finally back on him but a hand was clapped on to Roman’s back.
“Hey dude, awesome job, how’d your voice hold up?” one of the other actors, Justin if Virgil remembered correctly, asked.
“My throat is honestly totally killing me, I can’t wait to drink my weight in tea when I get home,” Roman laughed, wincing for emphasis.
“I feel you, I think I’m going to head home after I change,” Justin said, running a hand through his hair and fixing his glasses. “You planning on going out with the rest of the cast afterwards?”
“Nah, Virgil and I are going to get ice cream and then I am going to sleep like there’s no tomorrow!”
“Fair, fair, I’ll see you on Monday!”
By the time that Roman was finally free, a dozen people had asked Roman for picture and Virgil, with a quick text, told him that his mom had to pick him up unexpectedly.
Logan started to hang out with Virgil and Patton during lunch by the time junior year came by, only skipping a portion of Wednesdays in order to go to student council meetings.
By this point in their time in high school, lots of changes happened but some things still stayed pretty consistent. Roman decided against auditioning for the fall play but still seemed to remain as busy as ever with the theater competitions he was now taking part in, fitting in clubs in seemingly any place possible. Logan had become the junior year president for student council, still taking part in Model UN and a few AP classes definitely keeping him busy. Patton had been the one to change the least aside from Virgil himself. Virgil was happy that both he and Patton were both taking AP studio art. Apart from that, the two of them just focused on trying to stay sane.
Prom came up during their junior year as a topic of discussion (seeing as only the juniors and seniors could go on their own) and the four of them decided to go together as a group. It was a disaster in Virgil’s opinion and he had to leave early when Roman was asked for a dance by one of the popular girls in their grade. He felt sick to think about it.
Virgil stared up at the ceiling for a while the night of prom after he’d gotten back home, trying to figure out what was even happening at this point. A girl had asked for a dance, Roman accepted.
Except suddenly, Virgil remembered just how many times Roman had arrived late to lunch, how many times he’d sat down only to realize he’d had club meetings, how many times Roman would be preoccupied with rehearsals and homework and conversations in the halls before English. The study sessions at Roman’s house had become minimal and Virgil’s interactions with Roman’s brother Remus were more frequent than the interactions with Roman himself.
He missed Roman. High school had been, in the grand scheme of things, largely without his best friend. It still didn’t feel right, like he was missing something with the realization he’d come to.
As soon as he thought of Roman asking him to dance and kissing him though, he knew.
Virgil cried for a while that night.
Suddenly after prom, Roman dropped most of his clubs.
“Why’d you stop going?” Patton asked during their current conversation, taking out his lunch. He offered Virgil a cookie who took it reluctantly.
“Eh, I don’t know, I’ve just been so busy you know? Wanted to see if it helped,” Roman offered as explanation, shrugging. “Oh hey Logan, did you finish studying for our APUSH test today?” he added as the aforementioned took a seat at the table, finished with his student council meeting.
Logan nodded and wordlessly handed his notes to Roman with a roll of his eyes. “I knew you were going to ask.”
“You know me well Specs! I swear, he’s really going nuts with AP test prep, huh?” Roman asked, flipping through the neatly written notes.
“Teachers tend to overprepare us for AP tests, I promise it’s worth it.”
Patton sighed and turned to Virgil, letting the other two talk over their test next period. “Hey Virge, do you want to come over to my house today? I got some new paints I wanted to try out but I’ve been waiting for you to come over,” Patton tried, smiling hopefully at him.
He really didn’t have anything better to do that afternoon so he nodded. “Yeah, sure, do you want me to bring anything?”
Patton shook his head. “Nope, just yourself!”
Virgil nodded.
Summer came around and Virgil started to spend less time with Roman. His family had dragged him on more than one trip so luckily he had a good excuse. Roman certainly didn’t seem very available either so it wasn’t exactly hard for their schedules to conflict.
With a week until senior year started, Virgil went to help Patton walk his dog.
“Hey Pat..?”
“Hm?” Patton asked, looking to him with a smile.
“What would you think if I wanted to... I dunno, change my style I guess?” Virgil asked, tugging at the sleeves of his sweater.
“Hmm... Well, what are you thinking about? Like, just a little change? Starting from scratch?” was Patton’s response. “Not for any reason, I’m still supportive no matter what you want to do!”
Virgil thought on it as they continued walking. “I don’t really know yet, I just know I want to change it I guess?”
Patton nodded. “Well I say do it! You can always change it back!”
With that, they moved on to other subjects. Patton was excited about school while Virgil ruminated on Patton’s questions.
The day before senior year started, Virgil knew what he was planning on, staring at the hair dye in his hands.
______________________________
Hey hey hey, we are finally going to be getting into the actual conflict! Gosh, I’ve been waiting for the chance to do so, the next chapter will definitely be interesting!
I will say I had a bit of trouble with this one. The last chapter starts off with the first day of freshman year but I just felt it was a good way to set up the dynamic. I wanted the story to be set in either junior or senior year though mainly due to the maturity level at that point. It feels more comfortable and lets me have more room with what’s to come! I tried to get there without just saying “Look, here’s a time skip, wow!” I really hope I did it well, it feels a little clunky!
I hope you guys liked this chapter and as always, feel free to chat with me in the comments! I love hearing your guys’ opinions!

Fresh Start 2
Harry Potter AU
Characters: Sirius Black x Reader
Link to Chapter 1
Rating: M for slight smut
_______
The following day was spent moving back into the house that you once shared with Sirius. Molly Weasley kindly offered to keep Harry for a few days. The following day would be James and Lily’s funeral. Molly figured that it would be a good idea for Sirius and yourself to have that particular night free. You had already made the executive decisions that you were going to get wasted. Knowing Sirius, he probably had the same thoughts in his mind.
The night before Sirius tried to start a conversation about the relationship. You had quickly shot that down and ran off to your room.
“We are going to have to talk to each other sometime!”
Sirius shouted at your door. You walked to the bed that you once shared with Sirius and sat down. Sirius was right. The two of you needed to sit down and do a lot of talking but you didn’t want to. What if you took him back and got hurt again? A better question was what if he moved on and you were hurt watching him be happy with someone else. At least for the time being, he seemed desperate to have you as his lover.
Time will just have to fix this one....
9 am: Sirius’ eyes grey opened slowly. He looked up at the ceiling with a sigh. This was the day that he had been dreading since news of James and Lily’s death came to him. He didn’t even want to get up. Sirius spent the night before drinking half a bottle of fire whiskey. If he didn’t have to be a functional adult that day; he would have gone for the full bottle.
The light sound of a bang in the kitchen quickly pulled Sirius from his thoughts.
“Y/n? Darling?”
He slowly got up and walked into the kitchen. You stood on a kitchen chair painting a wall. Sirius frowned and looked around his new freshly painted kitchen.
“You painted the kitchen.”
Sirius said as he continued to look around. You nodded, not bothering to look over your shoulder.
“I also cleaned the stove at 3 am. I have to know what the hell you did to the poor thing. It was filthy.”
Sirius shrugged.
“Remus and I tried to cook. You, as the person who knows me best, know that I can’t cook to save my life.”
You smirked.
“What do you think of this color?”
Sirius nodded.
“You were right. This color does make the kitchen look bigger. Wait a minute, why are you cleaning the stove at 3 am and painting the kitchen?”
You took a deep breath.
“This was healthier than plotting on murdering Peter Pettigrew.”
Sirius stood silently for a moment before walking over and taking the paintbrush out of your hand.
“Y/n, we are going to get him. We are going to get him and I will personally make his life a living hell that he can’t escape from.”
You nodded. Sirius had the feeling that you didn’t believe him. He waited a moment before reaching out to help you down from the chair. The two of you stared at each other the moment Sirius’ hands wrapped around your waist. You swallowed, trying to fight back the feeling of ecstasy from being this close to him again.
As much as you didn’t want to admit it, the two of you were pinning for the other. It was almost shameless. Sirius was giving you that puppy dog look that made your heart swoon and you could tell that he was fighting with everything that he had to not pull you to him. This is going to be harder than you thought!
“Look, I have almost had him a few times. He isn’t going to come here and get all rowdy without consequences.”
You took a breath.
“Sirius, we are both going to end up in Azkaban for setting that dwarf on fire.”
Sirius smirked.
“No. That won’t be happening. I’m going to let the dementors have him but that doesn't mean that I won’t get a few punches in first. I’m bigger than him anyway. We should probably start getting ready. I’ll help you finish this when we get back.”
2 hours later…
Sirius sat in the back of the funeral home trying to avoid any reason to go to the front. He absolutely did not want to see James or Lily’s dead bodies. All Sirius wanted at the moment was a shot of whiskey or a cigarette.
“Sirius?”
He looked up to see his cousin Andromeda looking down at him with the most heartbroken expression ever.
“Hey.”
He replied before looking back down at his lap. Andromeda sat down slowly.
“I am so sorry about James and Lily. I know how much you loved them.”
Sirius nodded.
“Yeah. Thanks.”
Andromeda knew that Sirius was retreating further and further into that dark place that he liked to hide in.
“How is Y/n?”
Sirius looked up to see you still standing at the front of the room. You hadn't moved from James’ coffin in some time. Remus stood beside you with an arm around your waist. He silently thanked his friend for doing the job that he wasn’t.
“She’s taking it hard. You know that neither one of us are that great with communication.”
Andromeda nodded. That was true! She had seen Sirius and yourself avoid problems in the relationship too many times. The two of you seemed to kiss, cuddle, and fuck your problems away instead of talking.
“Yes, I know that well. I heard that she moved back in with you.”
Sirius leaned back on the bench and nodded.
“Yes, she moved back in yesterday. We are going to raise Harry together.”
Andromeda took a breath.
“Sirius, you love Y/n and she loves you.”
Sirius rolled his eyes.
“She doesn’t love me...not anymore. I ruined everything with her.”
Andromeda sighed. Had her cousin always been this difficult?
“Sirius, she has looked back here at you at least 10 times. She is trying to catch your eye. Y/n may be a stubborn proud woman but she is a stubborn proud woman that loves you. Prove to her how much you love her! The two of you aren’t children anymore! You're both essentially parents now! Harry needs the both of you. Won’t you do it for him?”
Sirius’ grey eyes rolled up to where Harry sat on Molly’s lap eagerly playing peekaboo with the Weasly’s son Ron. He quickly stood and walked to the front of the funeral parlor. Remus was the first to look up. He gave Sirius a nod before signaling down to you with his eyes.
Sirius took a breath and looked down at you. You stood looking ahead with tear-stained cheeks and didn’t realize that your best friends were beside you. Remus slowly removed his arm from your waist and Sirius took his place. You didn’t fight the urge to lean into him. Sirius snuggled his face into your lavender-scented hair. He breathed in, enjoying the closeness...even if it was for a moment.
Remus slowly looked at the two of you with a sad smile. This was the way things were supposed to be. The two of you were supposed to be together. Remus could only hope that you leaving Sirius was enough to kick his ass into gear.
The three of you stood in silence. It wasn’t supposed to be like this! Jame and Lily weren't supposed to die! James and Lily were too young.
I’m too young to be a father. Hell, last month I was partying in London…
Sirius thought then immediately felt guilty. The two of you had discussed having a baby sooner rather than later.
“Maybe I do want to have a family after all.”
It was a normal night. Sirius sat on the couch while you finished cleaning up from dinner. You had turned around with a smile when Sirius made the comment.
“I thought that you didn’t want kids.”
You said innocently. Sirius smiled over the book he was reading.
“Maybe I changed my mind?”
He stood up with a sultry smile before pulling you into his arms.
“Maybe I want to call you my wife and see you carry our child? Besides, we are good at practicing making babies...we can just do it for real this time.”
Sirius’ lips closed on your neck. You moaned as his hand slid up your dress.
“Are you proposing to me, Sirius Black?”
“I might just be.”
Sirius pulled himself from the memory. Your engagement ring suddenly felt very heavy in his pocket. Sirius wasn’t about to admit it but he kept the ring in his pocket since you had placed it back in his hand.
“I’m ready to go now.”
You whispered, loud enough for Sirius and Remus to hear. Sirius looked up at his friend and nodded.
“Come on then.”
30 minutes later, Remus walked into the house after Sirius and yourself. The three of you hadn’t said much since the funeral was over.
“So what do we do now?”
Remus asked. You shrugged.
“I don’t know about you two but I am getting drunk.”
Sirius and Remus glanced at each other for a moment before shrugging and following you.
2 hours later, you were drunk off your ass! You stood in the kitchen twirling in Remus’ arms. The loud music blared. Sirius sat at the table with a now empty bottle of booze in front of him watching the two of you with a smile.
“This is a good song!”
You said happily. Remus laughed, feeling dizzy as hell but this dance was everything that he needed at the moment.
“I love it! I hate it but I love it! Reminds me of my grandma.”
You burst into a fit of laughter.
“Your grandma is cool!”
Remus let go of you and held up a hand.
“I need to vomit.”
Instead of going to the bathroom like a sober person, Remus went outside to find a bush. You kept spinning with your bottle of Dubonnet.
After a few moments later, you went to the table to join Sirius. Plopping down on his lap, you threw your arms around his shoulders.
“You didn’t dance with me.”
Sirius chuckled and took a sip of his drink.
“Love, you know that I don’t dance.”
“That’s not what I remember.”
You slurred.
“Remember the Yule Ball? We had a right nifty time.”
As drunk as Sirius was he couldn’t help but think how adorable you were.
“We were under the stairs the whole night.”
“Dance with me.”
You begged shamelessly. Sirius patted your leg.
“Get up then, princess, and get back in my arms.”
You wasted no time in throwing your arms around Sirius’ neck. His arms were around your waist. Both of you were twirling to the most god awful music imaginable!
“I love seeing you smile.”
Sirius said happily. This was the most that you had smiled over the past few months and it felt good!
“I love seeing you smile more! You’re so handsome. I love you, Sirius.”
Sirius froze before giving you a clumsy kiss.
“I love you more, Y/n!”
“Prove it!”
The next morning, you woke with a pounding headache. Putting a hand to your head, you decided that it was time for a special potion.
“What the hell did we do last night?”
You thought before starting to stand up but froze realizing that an arm was around you. Looking down, you knew that hand from anywhere.
“Oh Merlin, what did we do?!”
You thought more urgently realizing that Sirius was wrapped around you. He was still out cold. Looking down, you realized that you were both naked.
“Damn it!”
You muttered before slowly pulling yourself out of your exes arms and tried to remember what happened.
“Prove it.”
Sirius’ grey eyes darkened as he licked his lips.
“Those are dangerous words.”
You pulled him down by his tie before hungrily kissing him. Sirius reached down and picked you up.
30 minutes later, the two of you were completely naked and rolling around in the bed.
“Sirius, please. Don’t be a damned tease! You know how much I love it when you touch me like this.”
Sirius chuckled and shoved his dark hair out of his eyes.
“Do you want me inside of you now?”
“Hurry up!”
You squealed. Sirius didn’t wait to be told twice before pushing into you. You automatically clenched around him, making Sirius moan.
“Has anyone else touched you?”
Sirius slurred. You shook your head before throwing it back against the pillow. Sirius grabbed your legs and threw them around his shoulders.
“N-no. It's you! Always you!”
You shook the memory from your head before getting up and rushing to get dressed. It was time to get Harry and there was no way that you could face Sirius at the moment! You could only pray that he would be gone for his mission when you returned. That would give you a few weeks to prepare to face him.
6 weeks later…
“Pregnant.”
Remus said calmly. You, meanwhile, sat with your eyes clenched with your fingers crossed.
“Are you sure?”
You questioned. Remus sighed before sitting down beside you.
“Y/n, we have done all of the magical tests in addition to all of the muggle ones. I think that it is safe to say that you are going to be a mother.
You stood up and walked to the sink feeling tears forming in your eyes.
“What the hell am I going to do Remus? I’m having a totally unplanned baby with my ex. We have Harry. We are boh in the order….and….”
Remus stood up and quickly pulled you into his arms.
“You are going to breathe first off. Second, everything will be fine. You have me and the rest of the order too. Y/n, I will never abandon you. If you remember its us, as in Sirius, yourself, and me against the world now. We support each other. As far as Sirius is concerned, he loves you. I know that you don’t want to believe that but he does. I also think that you still love him.”
You pressed your face against Remus’ chest. For a moment, you wished the baby would have been with him. At least Remus wouldn’t try to confuse you.
“Yes...I do still love him.”
Remus took your hand in his.
“Sirius has changed.”
You nodded before looking over at Harry, who sat eagerly eating a snack. He was so happy in his own little world. The realization that you were about to have two babies under the age of 3 was almost scary. Sure, people did it all the time but Sirius and yourself were not those people!
“When does he come home?”
Remus’ gentle voice pulled you from your thoughts.
“Tomorrow. He’ll be at dinner tomorrow at the Weasley’s.”
Remus looked thoughtful.
“If you want, I will sit with you when you tell him.”
You nodded.
“It definitely couldn’t hurt.”

Lost in the Wrong Story
I Knew You
Masterlist Last Next Ao3
A/N: A mini series collaboration of Roman angst between @hitmewiththatfanart33 and I. Feel free to ask either of us to be tagged. The next part will be posted to her blog!
Chapter Summary: Roman’s absence is affecting Patton a lot more than he lets on, and given the opportunity, he goes after him alone. Roman makes it clear he’s there to stay.
Janus blinked owlishly as the early morning sunlight flooded into the room. That was strange. His room didn’t get sun. It took him a moment to realize where he was, but Patton’s arm around his torso quickly gave it away to his still-exhausted brain, as did the thousands of pictures lining the walls. Patton pulled Janus in tighter, wrapping him in his warm embrace until he was flush against his back, and oh how Janus longed to shut his eyes and melt into him. After the night he’d had, Janus could sleep for hours more. He shook his head slightly with the knowledge he couldn’t, and he forced his eyes to stay open, however heavy their lids were. Unfortunately, being awake meant that everything was starting to come back to him.
His heart ached, wishing Roman could be here with them. Janus must have moved slightly because Patton opened his eyes and removed his arm from around him to reach for his glasses. Janus sat up with a quiet groan, almost instantly missing Patton’s warmth, and he shivered as a chill ran over him.
“Morning, Honey-Dee,” Patton yawned. It was a huge one that merited a small, cute head shake afterwards.
“Good morning, my love,” Janus hummed, (voice true to his favorite pet name), barely holding in a matching yawn. Patton giggled and cupped his cheek to give him a quick morning kiss as well as nuzzle their noses together. Logan knocked on the door frame— when had he gotten there?— effectively drawing their attention away from one another. He looked entirely too fond. “And my other love.” Virgil appeared behind Logan. “And my—”
“Yeah, yeah. We get it, Jay,” Virgil interrupted. “We’ve got more important things to do.” Janus decided not to mention the deep blush that had appeared on Virgil’s cheeks. He was right of course, but that didn’t take away from Janus’ satisfaction at flustering his partners.
Logan, on the other hand, was much more serious. He’d always been the most insufferable morning person. Knowing him, he’d been up for hours. “I am a little surprised at you, Janus. I would have expected you up by now seeing how worried you were last night. Given what you described, I was up rather early in order to begin our search for Roman.”
Janus rolled his eyes. He flicked his hand at Logan, putting him in the dress he had worn the night before, and god did he look good, shoulders bare and more elegantly dressed than they’d ever seen him. “You try running a restaurant in that.” Logan’s blush was matched by his partners. Now was not the time to be useless gays, but god dammit if that wasn’t just what they were.
“I may have made an error in judgement,” Logan acknowledged. Virgil discreetly kicked him. Patton didn’t notice, but Janus still caught it and delighted in the rapidly deepening blush that came across their nerd’s face. “I apologize for being short with you,” he finished sheepishly, returning himself to his regular shirt and tie.
“I convinced him to let you sleep in,” Virgil explained. Janus thanked his stars for his emo, for if he’d gotten a second less of sleep, he was sure he’d commit several different crimes today before blacking out. Several more than usual, that is.
Patton cocked his head to the side. “It’s not like you to be up so early, Virge.”
“It is if I never slept,” Virgil said, doing finger guns in a poor attempt to lighten the situation. Patton crossed his arms, giving Virgil his Pattonted death stare.
     “We’ll talk about that later.”
Janus swung his legs out of bed and stood up. A wave of his hand removed any rumples from his clothing— he’d been too tired to change last night— restoring it to its crisp, clean norm, and as a finishing touch, he snapped his shoes on before elegantly twirling his bowler hat between his fingers, placing it on his head. Patton did the same, the only difference being him switching out his cat onesie for his normal clothing. Janus took a deep breath. “Alright. Let’s get Remus.”
***
Patton hid behind Logan, as did Virgil, which was why he held his hand so that their brave Janus, who had put up with Remus’ chaos for years could do the talking. Logan was probably the warmest of all of them, even though Ro— smile, Patton— Patton himself was a pretty cozy temperature. He didn’t know what it was. He just radiated heat that Patton could feel even from merely hovering close to his strong shoulders. The same couldn’t be said for Janus and Virgil, however, for the two of them were cold as corpses— ew no, he was too close to Remus’ room gross gross gross…
“Hello, Remus,” Janus greeted smoothly. Patton loved his voice so much.
“Riddle me this: if my anaconda don’t want none unless you got buns, what does he want?” The way he spoke— like they were prey— made Patton squeak and squeeze his boyfriend’s cold hand tighter.
“For you to open the imagination. Roman locked us out.” Janus sounded annoyed already, and Patton peered around Logan’s shoulder to brave a look at the scene.
Remus lounged languidly against his door, holding it seductively, but at least there wasn’t any blood involved, and Janus had his arms crossed with his weight shifted to one leg in impatience with the duke. “Not my problem,” Remus shrugged, about to close the door. Janus stuck his foot inside.
“It is when he’s your brother and might not be coming home unless you help us,” he snapped. Then his tone softened, his eyes flickered to the floor, and he looked so uncharacteristically troubled. “He’s really hurting right now, Remus. Please.”
“Only if I get to call Patton daddy.”
“No,” Patton’s partners all quickly said in unison. Patton blushed. He was still scarred from figuring out what that meant after being called it so many times, but he was used to it by now.
Remus considered Janus, peering to the left of his door to get a good look at the other three of them, and Patton shuddered. “Fine,” he groaned after a long silence. “I can’t unlock it, but I can use my door.”
Janus stepped aside to let Remus out, and he shut his door behind him, closed his eyes, then opened it again. It was just a swirling black portal of some sort. “In you go! There’s no telling where you’ll end up— it’s a bit chaotic in there— but if you think about brother dearest long enough, you should be able to find him.” Remus sounded incredibly impish, which made Patton a bit nervous, but when it came to any of his partners, he would do anything. He took a deep breath, stepped around Logan, and charged through the door before he could be stopped. He only had one thought on his mind: Roman.
When he stumbled through to whatever side, dimension, or however else he could have possibly reached this place from Remus’ door, he was in a lovely khaki skirt with a loose-fitting, light blue shirt tucked into it beneath a black corset of sorts. His feet were bare— that was probably the first thing he noticed because suddenly there was grass— and everything around him was so green and alive. Nearby a gray... scarf?... he assumed to be his rested on a low-hanging tree branch. Under that same tree sat a basket.
Everything was starting to feel eerily familiar...
     Nostalgic.
He let himself breathe in the fresh air that smelled of spring while he figured it out, letting the sun filtering down from the gaps in the trees hit his freckled arms. This place felt like home. All he could hear were birds chirping their beautiful songs without a trace of another human in sight or earshot, which troubled him, but he didn’t let it deter him from his mission. He’d be found by his loves if he got lost, right? Of course. Why would he even doubt it?
Though he tried to think bright thoughts, his smile felt queasy and he suddenly dreaded having rushed through the door alone. Why wasn’t anyone else here yet? And where was here? His breaths began to come in heavier, and he spun in a circle. Everything looked the same. These were just trees in the woods with no markings, no one to hold his hand, and certainly no one to lead the way.
That just meant he had to figure things out for himself. Janus had said fairy tales, right? Well then which one was he in?
Oh! Oh! Black corset, tan skirt, no shoes… Was he— was he Aurora?! Patton squealed, unable to stop himself from jumping up and down in the soft greenery. ‘I know how to find Roman,’ he sang in his head, though really Roman would be coming to him.
He clasped his hands behind his back innocently, looking around before beginning to sing. He took a big, slow, almost dancing step, liking the way the skirt moved with his leg. “I know you, I walked with you once upon a dream. I know you, that look in your eyes is so familiar a gleam.” He twirled, and soon he was getting into the swing of things, freely sashaying around the forest floor.
“And I know it’s true that visions are seldom all they seem, but if I know you, I know what you’ll do: you’ll love me at once, the way you did once…” Patton suddenly stopped, his chest throbbing as the full force of everything hit him. “... upon a… dream.” Then, of course, he was crying. What if Roman really didn’t come for him? What if he didn’t want them to find him so badly that he would just leave Patton alone? What if he never got his fingers kissed again, or had someone to sleepily sing with him in the morning? What if no one ever carried him to bed when he accidentally fell asleep during a movie? What if he never got to tell Roman how much he loved him again? God, he missed him so terribly much already.
He pressed his back against one of the trees with the gray bark, burying his face in his hands to wet them with tears in private. Someone gently tried to pry them away, and Patton, thinking he was alone, screamed loud enough to send the birds flying. There was nowhere to scramble backwards to, so his first instinct was to push the person away from him as hard as he could. They didn’t so much as budge. And though his original effort failed, Patton was instantly overwhelmed with joy because he’d know that broad, firm chest anywhere. His head shot up.
Heart still pounding, he grinned, exclaiming, “Ro—”
“Shh. Dance with me?” Patton frowned, hesitantly offering his hands with halting movement as he tried to discern Roman’s face. He hid his sad eyes behind a concerned expression, and in a moment the look was gone, turning into a too-wide, too-bright smile. Roman took Patton’s hands, pulling him away from the tree, and began twirling him in time to music that played softly from thin air. Roman hummed along as they danced without saying a word.
Patton tried to enjoy it, he really did. Roman was an elegant dancer and Patton enjoyed being his partner, but something was obviously wrong. Patton couldn’t pinpoint the denial as accurately as Janus, but as in tune as he was to emotion, it was hard to miss the raw feeling in Roman’s face, posture, even the world he had created. “Roman—” Patton tried again.
Roman pulled Patton closer, pressing a sweet kiss to his cheek, but never once did he look him in the eye, instead gazing off somewhere behind him. “It’s alright, Patton. You’re allowed to cry,” he murmured. Patton almost laughed.
“It’s not about that. I mean, I suppose it is... I just didn’t think you were coming for me, and I missed you so much it hurt.” Patton was far from laughing now. He felt tears burn trails down his cheeks, and their dancing came to a halt along with the music. Roman lifted a hand to wipe the tears off of his face.
“You missed me?” Roman asked haltingly. His face slackened for a moment before being drawn back into that fake smile. It almost looked like a glitch, the sudden changes scaring Patton. “We only met but a few minutes ago. Did I make that large of an impression on you, darling?” he teased.
No no no… He couldn’t do this. He couldn’t— “Roman, we’ve been dating for months.” Patton was full-on crying now. He hadn’t quite believed Janus until now, for there was no way Roman felt so unwanted with all of them around. And yet… here they were. Standing in the middle of a serene forest that his ever so talented love had created, Patton uncontrollably crying his eyes out and Roman standing still as a statue because he didn’t know how to cope. How was it that Patton was only now feeling the depth of Roman’s insecurities? How was he only now realizing how hurt Roman was?
Roman dropped Patton’s hands reflexively, taking a small step back. “Patton… Why are you here?”
“We— We came for you. Janus told us what happened and—”
“I told him not to follow me. I need— I need some space.” He ran a hand through his hair.
Patton took a step forward. “You need to come home.” Roman stepped further away, turning his back to Patton. “Roman?” He tried to put his hand on Roman’s shoulder, but he pulled away.
“Where were you when Janus came for me?” Roman asked hollowly. “You leave me alone for days before showing up randomly to discuss our feelings? I’m sick of it, Patton. I just want to be left alone.” Did he, or was he trying to push them away? Roman turned his head slightly towards Patton, and he swore he would never forget that apathetic goodbye. “Don’t try to follow me.” His stomach sank in dread.
Then Roman began walking through the trees, and behind him tumbled in thick fumes of fog. Patton desperately tried to follow him, but his regal form was quickly enveloped in the mist like a fleeting vision of a ghost that Patton had been graced with, leaving him to stumble around blindly, tripping over tree roots and low bushes. Roman wasn’t gone. He wouldn’t just leave him like this. It was a joke, right? Please let it be a joke.
He kept going and going and going, too scared of being left alone to stop, too scared of losing Roman to slow down. At one point he walked face-first into a tree branch, breaking his glasses, though it wasn’t like he could see in the first place. He threw them to the ground with a sobbing scream of frustration, then kept moving.
He had to keep searching. He had to.
“Roman?” Patton called. “Roman, this isn’t funny. Come out.” He finally found the end to the fog, but no Roman. Grief and fear twisted together to wrench his stomach. “Roman!’ Patton yelled louder and louder, diving back into the fog, screaming Roman’s name until his voice was hoarse. He fell more times than he could count, tearing his skirt and even his skin on more than just a few occasions. Wherever Roman was, he wasn’t here anymore. Slowly, the fog cleared, leaving a beaten-down Patton to numbly wander the forest.
     He was alone.

3:14AM
satantakemehome: Hey, does anyone have any clue why there's nightmares galore? I was trying to sleep.
spipples: Kid, it's like 4am, go to sleep.
satantakemehome: Mother. Mother, I am Insomnia, mother. It doesn't work that way, mother.
spipples: Okay, okay, don't go all eldritch being on me, chill.
satantakemehome: Fix the Mind, mother. I crave the sleep, mother.
spipples: If you plan to be an eldritch being, go bother your uncle or visit auntie Dee in the hospital, I'm sure he'd love company in his misery up there.
SnekBoi: No. Tired.
satantakemehome: Uncle it is.
Raccoon Man (the trashiest hero): Hello Jeffrey, I am afraid.
spipples: Don't care. Got shit to deal with.
5:38AM
birdgeoisie: Hey mom, did you ever figure out what the overly murdery nightmares were about?
spipples: Yeah, it was Uncle Remus.
þiccness: FINALLY, I can say uncle bastard's name in the chatroom!
Octopussy: I fucking hate all of you.
Momgan: You popped up like a fucking goblin and whacked poor Roman in the head at four in the goddamned morning, how the fuck do you think we're going to react!?
schrodingersdumbass: Oh shit, Auntie Lo is going off on Uncle Remus.
uwu: I would give all my uwus to see this but I have to start getting ready for work sooooo

þiccness: Alright edgelord.
11:17AM
spipples: It's a beautiful day out.
Raccoon Man (the trashiest hero): Almost as beautiful as your face.
spipples: You only say that because we have the same face.
Raccoon Man (the trashiest hero): Exactly, you're catching on.
spipples: I hate you.
Raccoon Man (the trashiest hero): Don't lie, little bro, it doesn't look good on you.
SnekBoi: Yeah, that's my job.
spipples: Fuck off, you've done enough damage to Thomas.' mind releasing Remus on us.
SnekBoi: I had nothing to do with that. I was at home resting off chemo still. I have a solid alibi. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to finish puking and see how bad my hair is because I know I saw some on my pillow.
Octopussy: goddammit not again!
SnekBoi: Well, sorry, I can't really control it, Ree. The chemo does what it wants.
shrexy: Are you okay?
SnekBoi: Probably. I mean, I'm just worried.
Coffee Bandit: Snakebabe, do you want me over?
SnekBoi: I'd love to see you, but I can't.
Coffee Bandit: What about outside in the garden six feet apart with masks on while we do light work taking care of your plants?
SnekBoi: Is this a date? It sounds like a date.
Coffee Bandit: Can be if you want it to be.
SnekBoi: So maybe 6:30 when it cools down so I'm not overheating myself?
Coffee Bandit: Sounds great, sugarbear.
SnekBoi: Yeah sounds great, Rem.
Coffee Bandit: See you there, lovely snek.

Octopussy: ah, nevermind, I read the backlog.
uwu: Remy's here to date cute snake men and nothing else will do.

þiccness: Thanks, mom!
Thera-pissed: Oh, Ro, are you still coming over at 7 for dinner?
waaahluigi: Yeah, I'm just working off the headache still.
Octopussy: I regret nothing.
Thera-pissed: Alright, love, take your time. Remember, we can always just stay home and watch a movie while the kids are out.
waaahluigi: That actually sounds better than going out and hiking.
Thera-pissed: Then we'll stay in inside and watch a movie or two and have dinner there.

9 | The After Party
“I think we’re cursed,” Virgil stated as he eyed the giant mole.
The group had not been expecting anything to be inside of the cave, apart from of course the unique underground tree that grew the fruit Remy sent them for. So when they came face to face with a giant mole monster, Roman appropriately began freaking out and would have screamed at the top of his lungs if Janus hadn’t covered his mouth to silence him, because they did not need to be seen or heard by that thing.
And when I say giant mole, I mean giant mole, like whale-sized giant mole. Have I mentioned this is a giant mole enough? I should probably get back to the story...
“Merciful Gods, that thing is huge. What the hel do we do?” Willow asked in a panicked whisper. “There’s no other way through to the fruit.”
“Remy expects us to face that thing? Is he mad?” Remus asked.
Logan felt he half agreed with the question because honestly, this creature looked like a lot for seven teens to handle by themselves.
“Maybe it’s friendly?” Patton suggested.
“Well, average-sized moles are carnivorous, so I doubt a giant one would have a much different appetite” Logan stated.
“There goes that hope,” Virgil muttered. “There must be another way through.”
“There really isn’t. This is the cave that Remy marked for us, and there’s no back doorway to that tree, and we even can’t go back the way we came to check if there is” Janus said.
Virgil sighed. “We’ll have to fight it then.”
“I’m sorry, but can you see the size of that thing? It’ll squash us like pests.” Willow whisper shouted.
“There are seven of us and one of them. Besides, Remy wouldn’t have us fight something he wasn’t sure we could takedown.” Virgil declared. “Come on guys, we have literal magic on our sides.”
“How do we know it isn’t magical itself?” Remus asked.
“Stat Check,” Logan said. “It could probably give us a good reading on this creature.”
Willow shrugged. “Better than running in blind, I guess.”
Logan pointed his wrist at the animal and whispered the spell, which created a small screen of light that it thankfully didn’t seem to notice.
Unknown
Titles: Killer Mole, Mountain Mole
HP: 100 - Full
Skills: Echolocation, Poison.
“Killer Mole, what a friendly name,” Roman snarked, finally free from Janus’s silencing hand.
“It doesn’t have any magical skills, so that means it probably has no magical defence, and since it uses echolocation, I think it’s safe to assume that it has poor sight,” Logan said.
“We’ll need to keep an eye out for whatever poison it has though,” Janus pointed out.
“Alright. The best approach would probably be a spell to immobilize it. Something that could maybe cause confusion.” Virgil suggested.
Remus lit up. “Ooh, I know just the spell!”
“Remus wait-”
Before anyone could do anything to stop him, Remus lept out from their hiding place and cast his spell. It was a wind spell that made an annoying ping sound echo around the cave. Everyone winced at the sound, including the mole, who had been very much caught off guard. It began to run around and stomp and grunt like it was seeking out the sound’s source to destroy it.
This however caused rocks to fall from the cave ceiling and nearly crush the group. Which of course led to the teens screaming and running around, doing their best to avoid falling rocks and the giant mole. Willow tried to cast an animal communication spell, but their attempts to calm the creature were useless.
"Make the pinging stop Remus!" Patton yelled.
"Right, uh, I'm not very great with reversing spells…"
"Well someone needs to do something or we're doomed!" Willow screamed.
Logan quickly cast a reversal spell to silence the pinging, but that did nothing to stop the mole's rampage.
"Guys it knows we're here and is not happy!" Willow stated.
"What if we explained we mean no harm?" Patton asked.
"I don't think it will believe us after Remus's little stunt," Roman said.
"Run!" Willow yelled as the mole charged them.
Janus shouted some colourful words as he barely dodged another fallen boulder. "We need to stop it!"
Patton tried using an ice spell, but couldn't manage to properly aim while he and the creature were running. "We can't use magic on it directly while it's moving like this."
"Remus, do something about the roof!" Virgil yelled.
"What?"
"You're the one with proficiency in rock type magic, do something!"
"Oh, right!" Remus cast a spell to strengthen the cave ceiling. "This should stop anything more from falling but I'm low on MP!"
"Don't use any more magic then. Patton, get the stupid fruit, Willow how do we take this thing down?" Virgil questioned.
"While I hate to admit it, nothing but brute force is going to stop it. It's out for blood." Willow answered.
“Will our weapons even make a dent?" Roman asked.
"Only one way to find out!" Janus said as he charged at one of the beast's ankles with his staff magically set ablaze.
Roman ran at another ankle with his katana drawn and Remus went for a third leg with his morning star while Willow shifted into their wolf form to attack the fourth leg. Meanwhile, Logan and Virgil charged at its middle from either side. The mole let out a nightmare-inducing scream as it was attacked from all angles.
“HP?” Virgil asked.
“Sixty-two left!” Logan answered.
The mole tried to stomp on Remus but Janus managed to push her out of the way just in time. Roman took another swing at the creature’s back leg, causing it to let out another scream and run forwards.
“I have the fruit!” Patton yelled.
“Look out!” Roman screamed, seeing that the mole was headed for him.
Patton squeaked and ran back up into the tree.
“Everyone, do another rush attack!” Virgil commanded.
The group once again ran at the mole from different angles. The creature screamed as each weapon made contact. Patton chose this moment to take aim at the animal and managed to hit it with a sleeping spell that instantly caused it to fall unconscious.
Everyone breathed a collective sigh of relief. Patton jumped down from the tree and ran over to Remus to give him a big hug.
“Never, ever, do that again, please?”
“Pat, I swear to you if I ever see a giant mole again, I will simply run the other way.”
“What do we do with it?” Roman asked.
“Leave it? It’s asleep, not dead,” Janus pointed out.
“It’s only at twenty-three HP,” Logan declared. “And we honestly have no idea if it would have attacked us if it weren’t for the panic Remus’s sound spell caused.”
Remus awkwardly rubbed the back of his neck. “Sorry about that, everyone.”
“Everyone makes mistakes,” Virgil replied. “I think we should at least heal it though. As a sort of sorry for ruining its day and nearly killing it.”
Willow nodded agreeingly. “That’s probably the least we could do…”
“I’ll heal it. Could one of you open a portal back to the manor, so we can get out quickly once the spell is complete though? I don’t know if it’ll wake up and try to kill us again,” Virgil said.
Janus nodded and cast the portal spell for seven entities while Virgil did his healing spell. Once the group crossed through the portal into the familiar manor garden, they all collapsed with exhaustion.
“What in Hades happened to you guys?” Remy exclaimed when he saw them appear.
“We fought that giant mole thing guarding the fruit,” Roman answered.
“You what?”
“Fought the-”
“I heard you the first time, kid, but there is no giant mole in that cave. I checked it out last week to be sure that she’d migrated already.”
“Well, she must have been out for lunch or something when you dropped by. Because we all just barely escaped her,” Janus stated.
The colour suddenly drained from Remy’s face. “Oh f- are you all okay? Did she injure you? You didn’t get hurt badly, right?”
“No, we actually almost killed her after Remus sent her into a panic and we had to fight her because she was out to kill us,” Willow answered.
“Oh my- wait, you all nearly killed her?”
“Yep.”
“How in Hades did you manage that?”
“Teamwork and the collective will to live,” Virgil answered.
“...You kids are going to be the death of me.”
---
That evening, just as they had been promised, the class had themselves a party to celebrate their success. The dining room was decorated with brightly coloured floating orbs that gave the room a festive appearance, and the table held a banquet fit for royalty, including some fabulous pastries from the bakery.
Emile and Everleigh had come up from town and listened eagerly as the group retold everything that had happened. When they got to the part about the giant mole, Emile turned to Remy and gave him a stern lecture.
"You said they'd be safe."
"I thought the guardian had migrated! Besides, it's not my fault they were reckless enough to take it on instead of calling for adult assistance."
"You did tell us only to summon you if we had an emergency," Roman pointed out.
Everleigh raised an eyebrow. "You guys don't think being almost killed by a giant mole, counts as an emergency?"
"Well, we all were trying to just stay alive, so the idea we could call for help didn't really come to mind," Willow answered sheepishly.
Apart from that, the night was full of fun and laughter. Once the group had finished their meal, they went to one of the sitting rooms and continued their light-hearted conversation there. At some point, Emile and Remy went off to get some drinks for everyone, so the kids were left alone.
“Let’s play truth or dare,” Everleigh suggested.
Remus nodded vigorously. “Ooh, yes! Roman, Truth or Dare?”
“I didn’t even agree to play yet.”
“Yeah, but you love this game.”
“...Truth.”
“When was the last time you wet the bed?”
Roman blushed. “I have never wet the bed.”
“Really, I could have sworn you did this morning.”
“You dumped water on me, that isn’t the same thing!” Roman rolled his eyes. “Anyway, Patton, truth or dare.”
“Hmm, truth?”
“Who was your first kiss?”
“Me,” Remus said at the same time Patton replied, “Ummm…”
“Wait, I wasn’t your first kiss?”
“Well… you know the story where a princess kisses a frog and he turns into a prince.”
“Yeah.”
“So, my mom told me and Morgan that story, and then Morgan dared me to kiss a frog.”
“Oh… was it a good kiss?”
Janus raised an eyebrow. “It was a frog.”
Remus rolled her eyes. “I know that, but it’s not the answer to my question.”
“I was like eight, so I don’t remember. It didn’t turn into a prince though. Willow, truth or dare?”
“Um, dare.”
“I dare you to give me a hug.”
“Aw, sure Pat!” Willow got up and gave Patton a quick hug. “Janus, truth or dare?”
“Dare.”
Willow smirked. “I dare you to kiss Roman’s cheek.”
Janus and Roman both blushed while Remus went “Oooooh!”
Janus turned to Roman. “Do you mind?”
“Uh, nope. Not at all.” Roman said as calmly as he could, but failing to keep his voice from cracking at the end.
Janus kissed his cheek and Remus cheered. “They did it!”
Janus rolled his eyes. “Virgil, truth or dare?”
“Truth.”
Janus smirked. “Okay. What really happened between you and Logan when you got ‘lost in the woods’?”
“Um, nothing. We just got lost.”
“I can tell you’re lying~”
Logan huffed. “For the last time, Janus, nothing happened.”
“You’re both lying. Come on guys, we’re your friends!”
“Then why don’t you believe us?”
“Because something happened and we can all tell you’re trying to hide it,” Remus answered.
Virgil turned to Logan with a confused expression. “Do you have any idea what they believe happened?”
“Well, the short version is, they think we went off to make out.”
Virgil turned bright red. “What? I- You- We- no, no, nooo.”
“He’s getting flustered! It’s true!” Remus declared.
Roman objected. “That doesn’t prove anything.”
Logan nodded. “Thank you, Roman.”
“Obviously making out would have been going too fast. They just shared their first kiss.”
“Un-thank you, Roman.”
“Uh, shouldn’t we carry on with the game?” Patton suggested.
“Hmm, I think this is a bit more entertaining.” Everleigh giggled.
Logan gave her a look of betrayal. “Et tu Everleigh?”
“Logan, I grew up with you, I definitely know when you’re lying.”
Willow sighed. “Please just tell them before they all drive me crazy with their betting?”
“Betting?” Virgil squeaked.
“Janus has bet that you’re both together already and in a… close relationship. Roman thinks you’re taking things slow. Everleigh thinks at least one of you believes you’re together while the other is oblivious and pining. Patton thinks you at the very least confessed and Remus thinks you’re at least intimate.”
Logan gaped. “What the heck! How much do you guys think about this?”
Remus shrugged. “Often enough to form a Fanclub.”
“Oh my gods.”
“You formed a Fanclub?” Virgil asked.
“Yeah. Remy’s the chairman and Mr Picani is even a member.” Remus declared.
“You recruited Remy?!”
Willow shrugged. “If anything, he recruited us.”
Everleigh nodded. “I don’t even see you guys that often, but it’s super obvious with how you gravitate towards each other.”
“We don’t.”
“You’re literally sitting beside each other right now.” Janus pointed out with a smirk.
“Okay, you know what. You want the truth?” Virgil asked. “We were kidnapped by pixies.”
...silence…
Roman scoffed. “That is the worst lie I’ve heard yet.”
“Actually, he’s telling the truth,” Janus declared.
...silence; the sequel…
“How the f-”
I will save you the boring details of the explanation that followed, but to put it in a nutshell: Virgil explained what actually happened + how his parents met and all that, and now everyone is just sitting in silence again.
“...so, you didn’t kiss?” Remus asked.
“I told you so!” Logan huffed.
“Not even after that? You guys are together like all the time,” Janus stated.
“No, we aren’t.”
“Just last night, while everyone was sitting around the campfire, you two sat off to the side on a log of your own.”
“Actually, Virgil was comforting me because... well, I was worried about what will happen to our friend group after the test.”
“Oh…”
“Well, I would hope we keep in touch.” Roman declared. “You guys are the best friends I’ve ever had.”
“Yeah. I can’t even imagine having to go back to my hometown. I mean, sure, I miss my family, but you guys… you’ve sort of become like my second family.”
Willow smiled. “Aw, Pat, that’s so sweet. I know I’ve got a whole pack to get back to, but I can’t imagine not spending every day with you guys, learning spells and trying to get out of trouble.”
Janus laughed. “I like how you said getting out of trouble instead of trying to avoid it.”
“Well, duh, we’re stupid reckless. Especially me!” Remus declared, causing everyone to laugh. “Seriously though, it won’t be that hard to keep in touch, I think. We can teleport to each other whenever we want.”
“True. plus we still have our book club meetings if you guys want to continue those.” Everleigh said.
“Of course! We have to keep those up.” Patton stated. “And we can even go on our own real-life adventures all together!”
“Yeah, we can form an adventurers party. We’ll call ourselves the Great Eight.”
“No offence Roman, but I don’t think that name works,” Janus said.
Roman shrugged. “We can choose a different one then. Hmm, the Magnificent Eight.”
“Does eight have to be in the name?” Everleigh asked.
“We could just go be, the Magnificent,” Patton suggested.
Virgil shook his head. “That sounds like it’s just one person. If we’re going with a team name, it needs to be something that defines us all.”
“The sides?” Remus proposed.
Janus tilted their head to the side. “How does that work?”
“I don’t know. It just felt familiar…”
“Maybe it’s something weird from a past life,” Roman suggested.
“What was I? Half of a coin?”
“Part of a person maybe? Like, a facet of someone’s personality,” Willow thought aloud. “Nah, that sounds totally crazy.”
“We are great, but it’s spelt G-R-8.” Patton proposed.
Willow frowned. “Why would we say we are G-R-ate? Like we’ve eaten already? Or we’ve... been... eaten?”
“No, like the number eight.”
“Eight days a week.” Everleigh put forth.
“There are only seven days of a week.” logan pointed out.
“The 8th wonder of the world!” Remus suggested.
Roman frowned. “What are the other seven wonders?”
“The octave…? Like a sequence of eight notes.”
“Did you just make a pun?” Patton grinned at Logan.
“...No.”
“Party of Eight?” Janus offered.
Virgil shrugged. “That seems a bit on the nose.”
“Family of Eight?” Patton recommended.
“Again, too direct.”
“The eight musketeers~!” Roman sang.
Logan frowned. “What’s a musketeer?”
“How about we don’t choose a name yet. The greatest heroes didn’t have any titles until they earned them.” Everleigh pointed out.
Everyone nodded in agreement. They didn’t need to give themselves a name. They would earn that later on. For now, they were eight friends, just having fun together. They didn’t have to think about their future plans just yet; they had to all get through the magic license test first anyway. In the end, they were just happy that they’d settled on one thing.
Staying together.
The very next moment, however, everything would change. They didn’t know it yet but their group would earn their name sooner than later. And it started when Remy and Emile walked into the room.
“Remy? What’s wrong?” Virgil asked, noting the man’s forlorn expression.
“Virgil…”
“Remy, you’re freaking me out. What happened?”
"...Thomas and Nico have been kidnapped."

Scars: Year four, Chapter thirteen
Remus Lupin x Reader
Warnings: Cursing, mentions of self harm,
When Y/n L/n awoke she couldn't find it in her to move. Not a single limb. Her entire body felt numb, and weak,
The girl raised her wrist and fiddled with her fingers for a few seconds, until the pain set in and they had to drop. She felt fatigued and depressed. More than usual anyway. Y/n couldn't keep her arm up for more than a few seconds and had to take breaks before she could try to move again.
Everything felt, numb, and she felt too small in Remus's bedroom. She felt like the walls were stretching everywhere and like there was no escape in sight.
So she stood, and tried to walk to the door to get away from the inevitable body-trap.
Only for Remus to walk into the bedroom at the very moment she dropped. The boy had to catch the blood and energy drained girl in his arms before she fell; he pulled her over to the bed and held her up in his lap. "Love your body is fatigued and blood-drained. It'll make you hurt even more if you try to move that much... just lay down with me and I'll read a book and you can try to eat some food or chocolate okay?"
The tired girl nodded and let Remus cover her back up before the feeling of being trapped returned. ____________________________
After Remus left and Mare helped Y/n into some clothes, his elder sister came towards him, " Remus, why don't you and the boys go out and hang around town today? I can stay with Y/n and we can hang out and bond and start wrapping you guy's present's." The other boy opened his mouth to object but before he could utter a word, the older female held up a hand and silenced him with a smirk,
" Besides, I already settled it with mum so you also have no choice. And, you need to hang out with the boys your age, if you hang out with Y/n too long you'll turn into a girl yourself." Remus retaliated by elbowing his sister's side as she too.
Mare pushed him towards the main house door where Sirius and James were waiting for him. Remus turned around and caught one last glimpse of his older sister before he was hauled out and pulled away from the place he had come to call home by his two bestfriens.
By the time the three of them had reached the main town, James, Sirius and Remus had already plotted many ways to explain to the population of Hogwarts that they were back again; all of which included 'coming back with a bang'.
" Padfoot, I'm hungry and Moony looks tired of walking, I suggest we go somewhere to eat. Remus?" James finally spoke up about his needs and him and Sirius turned their attention towards Remus. Remus, who had previously been thinking about life and Y/n and whether or not Y/n would like what he got her for Christmas and wondering how Y/n was, paid no attention and didn't care to look look at the other two boys. His brows were furrowed and his lips were parted slightly.
Sirius sighed heavily and grabbed Remus's shoulders shaking them hard, " Remus Lupin, Stop Daydreaming About Your Damn Wife And Snap Out Of It." The taller boy immediately snapped to attention and he did nothing to stop Sirius from shaking him back and forth; the boy managed a sentence between his torture sentence and he said such with irritation and full confidence, " I wasn't daydreaming about Y/n Sirius. Now what'dya want?"
Sirius finally let go once James pulled him off of the poor boy and they started walking again, " We're hungry and you've lived here the longest, you should know somewhere we can go." Remus looked down and bit his lip in concentration before letting out a sigh, " Well, there is this one place I took Y/n to last week... but if we go you're paying James." His tone had a sense of finality to it. He looked towards James and Sirius before heading off towards the small diner. ____________________________
" Wait Y/n! You said that when you and Remus went out last week he took you to that one diner, the one with neon lights on the side?" Mareabelle asked the younger girl whom of which was currently mixing a patch of icing beside her. " Yeah, the one with those blue neon lights on the sides. What about it?"
The older girl leaned forward on her elbows and stared at Y/n incredulously. " What do you mean, 'what about it?', Y/n that's where dad took mum to on their first date! And when you told me about it, it sounded like a legitimate date!"
Y/n's face flushed furiously and she turned her attention back towards the cookie batter in the bowl she was holding. " Mare I already told you, it wasn't a date."
" Y/n you cannot tell me that it didn't feel like a date!" The older girl moved her arm up and lightly shoved Y/n's shoulder making her flinch, wincing lightly. Mare recoiled and rolled up Y/n's sleeve to reveal a barrage of blood-stained bandages trailing her upper bicep to the middle of her arm.
" Y/n- Oh lord I'm so sorry. Honey you never told me- When did this happen?! Is this what Remus was trying to tell me about earlier?" The addressed girl looked over to the bandage and rolled her sleeve back down. " It's nothing Mare."
Mare looked at Y/n in slight anger, " Y/n, how can you say that this is nothing?! You're hurting yourself again and with the stress and memories of what that kid did to you yesterday I'm throughly surprised you haven't done it again today!"
The other girl, now slightly annoyed, turned on Mare. " Okay, so how about this, you can ask questions while we do this, then, you can have full rights to drag me off and do whatever you need to calm down your nerves and fix the bandages." ____________________________
Remus had finally guided them towards the place of which they were to eat at and the first thing Sirius did was move out to touch the door, " REMUS- Oh My Godric Gryffindor this is the place that you and Y/n had your date at?!" Sirius Black recoiled and looked over at Remus, giving him the 'bitch' look and raking him over with his eyes. "Good choice Moony, you'll win all the girls with this one..."
And under his breath he added, " and maybe a few guys too..."
Of course Remus didn't hear that last part. But the other of the three did. ____________________________
After Mare had taken the batch of Christmas cookies out of their oven she immediately whisked Y/n off to Remus's bathroom.
When she got there she didn't expect to see the sink so clean, well aside from the pink tinting, and she quickly instructed Y/n to pull off her shirt. To which she obviously said no to.
" Y/n, I cannot help unless I can see the wound clearly. And I know that your bare body is reserved only for Remus but you gotta make an exception right here-'
The elder teen never got to finish her sentence for the younger one started wacking her over the head with a book. " Yeah, I deserve that... But either way I still need you to take the shirt off so I can see your arm clearly Y/n. You can put it back on after I finish dressing the- the uh, wound..."
Y/n nodded silently and pulled her shirt off, wincing slightly when it came time to pull her bruised and bloodied arm through it's sleeve. Afterwards she moved and sat on the sink's counter so Mare could see her arm better. The girl's face was tinted a light shade of pink and soon, you could hear groans of pain from the younger girl as the other pulled the tightly wrapped bandages off of her body.
" Remus's stuff seemed to help the bruising go down a lot... and you didn't cut too deep either..."
The rest of her sentence was drowned out by the front door opening and James, Remus and Sirius barging into the house.
Mareabella quickly grabbed the wrappings and things needed for patching Y/n up and went to work carefully but quickly. The two of them did not want the boys to come in and see her arms; or bare upper body either for that matter.
The elder girl had almost finished wrapping the bandage around Y/n's slit-up arm when the door to Remus's bedroom burst open.
" Mare! Y/n! Are you two in here!?"
They could hear the worry in Remus' voice when he yelled out those words and Mare didn't even try to stop him when he went to open the bathroom door to reveal the two girls.
" Oh thank Godric you're okay. I thought something had happened to you two. Don't scare me like that again please."
Remus walked into the bathroom and stood leaned on the sink next to Y/n, pretending she were in a shirt again.
" Did you and the guys have fun while we did our things?" Remus' head snapped up to look Y/n in the face but the highest his head would go was right where her shoulder was. So, he sat up a bit and placed his chin on her shoulder, nuzzling his nose into her neck, " Yeah, we went that diner I took you to and talked and we walked around and thought about what pranks to pull on innocent people once we returned to school yet again. I see you two had fun, you made cookies, and pudding and you also wrapped up some stuff too."
Once Mare had finally finished wrapping Y/n's arm and had left the two of them alone, Y/n turned to Remus and leaned her head on his shoulder.
" thankyou..."
The taller boy already knew what she had meant by the simple gesture and gently grasped her right wrist, moved the back of her hand up to his mouth before he placed a kiss to it.
" There's nothing to thank me for love."
____________________________
Later that day while Y/n and Mare were busy wrapping things up for his mum and Remus was busy lulling the excited children to sleep he couldn't help but allow his mind to wander to what Sirius had said earlier.
" Wait James no, we can't just hook Remus up with some random chick here, he has a damn wife."
James scoffed and Remus's head snapped up at the suggestion.
" I don't have a wife Sirius."
The boy in question shook his head and shoved another fork-full of pancake into his awaiting mouth.
Once he had finished he looked back up at Remus with a quirked eyebrow. " Oh yeah, then explain to me how you knew I was talking about Y/n earlier when I told you to stop daydreaming about your wife huh?"
Him and James smirked at the expression on Remus' face after those words and exchanged a fist pump. Sirius pulled his leather jacket closer to his body and leaned forward, " C'mon Moony, just admit you fancy the gal and we'll back off."
The brown haired boy rolled his eyes and moved his head backwards to, " Look at the sky", before turning his gaze back to the two boys before him. " Okay so maybe I fancy Y/n. Why's it so important to you two anyway?"
The two black-haired boys shared matching mischievous looks and grinned back at him. " Well, one thing, so we can tease you about it. For another thing, to ask why we were walking you two down the isle."
That sentence threw him off balance and a look of great confusion settled across the boys face.
" Oh you know. Yesterday when you picked up Y/n bridal style. I think it's safe to say that was the wedding and with how beautiful my baby Sis was lookin I can see why you'd wanna marry her. Of course I would never marry her I'm just pointing out-'
James cut the rambling bimbo off, " We get your point Sirius."
Remus steadied himself and went back to tucking the children in. Tonight was Christmas Eve so they needed to be asleep.
Yet, Remus couldn't help but think about how Y/n would look in a wedding dress. Not a dress too fancy and most likely one that would cover her arms but keep her shoulder open, those were the kind of shirts Y/n normally wore around Remus and the ones she had been comfortable in so he just assumed she would wear a dress like that. The shirt would be simple, ankle length, classic, white plain silky looking skirt that matched perfectly with the dresses upper half.
Remus attempted to keep those thoughts out of his head for he knew they were wrong and that he didn't need to be thinking about Y/n in such a way.
But every time he thought about Sirius and what he said he just couldn't keep the train of thought out of his head.
The boy was thrown from his thoughts as someone knocked at the door to the children's bedroom. Remus quickly swiveled around on his heel and turned to see Y/n wearing one of his shirts and a pair of her jeans.
She quietly walked into the bedroom and stood next to the boy, her head only five inches away from being level with his. She wrapped both her arms around the boys neck and leaned her head on his shoulder, yawning. Remus wrapped both his arms around the girl waist and hoisted her up where she wrapped her legs lazily around his waist and her head moved to his chest.
" Mare and I finished."
Remus gently swayed his body to the sound of the music his mum was playing in the kitchen in their record player. " Oh yeah?"
The girl nuzzled her head into his chest again and yawned once more. " Yeah, and I'm tired so let's say we go to bed now."
Remus pretended to be in thought and went back to swaying. " Nah, I like that music mum's playing downstairs. How about we dance to that 'til she turns it off and I can carry you to the bed after."
Y/n sat listening to the gentle beating of Remus's heart for a moment before nodding. " Fine but you have to carry me downstairs too."
Remus let out a chuckle and a small 'yes ma'am' before he started to walk downstairs with the girl in his grasp.
The two of them could hear the music clearly by then.
Hey Jude, don't let me down
You have found her, now go and get her
Y/n stood up and placed a hand on Remus' shoulder taking her other hand in his while he placed his free hand on her waist. The two of them were pressed near each other and Y/n was content with listening to Remus's heartbeat from where she was.
Remember, to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better
Remus and Y/n continued to gently sway back and forth to the music, gradually making their way around the living room.
So let it out and let it in,
Hey Jude, begin
You're waiting for someone to preform with
Y/n was gently pulled out and gracefully twirled around in a slow circle before she was pulled back into Remus' grasp.
Hey Jude, don't make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember, to let her under your skin
Then you begin to make it better
Remus twirled the girl out again and puller her back in, lifting her up and twirling her gently in his arms once before pulling her back down.
Na, na, na na na na,
Na na na na, Hey Jude
Na, na, na na na, Hey Jude
Slowly, the music came to an end and Remus spun Y/n around and back into his arms once more, her back to his chest.
And if only for that moment,
the two felt perfectly content with the world ____________________________ I think my words have said enough __________________________ Drop a vote, drink some water, eat some food and remember You Are Loved! ^ - ^

Real to Me (A Sanders Sides Princess and the Frog AU)  Prologue
First | Next
Summary: Virgil Bast grew up in a poor neighborhood in New Orleans, learning from his family’s work ethic and never once slowing down from the day he could get a job of his own. He’s always been kept company by his best friend, Patton La Bouff, son of the richest man in New Orleans.
Prince Roman of Maldonia has always been surrounded by praise, money, and almost anything he could ever want. Prince Remus, on the other hand, has never really been what you might call the pride of Maldonia.
And the Shadow Man has only ever wanted to punish those who’ve done wrong, helped along by his Friend on the Other Side.
Relationships: Platonic moxiety, eventual prinxiety
Characters: Virgil, Patton (eventual Roman, Remus, Janus, Logan, C!Thomas)
Warnings: None for this chapter! (There will be eventual unsympathetic Janus and Remus, but they get redeemed. There will also eventually be racial prejudice, but no slurs or physical violence.)
Word count: 1644
A/N: Hi, I’d like to preface this fic by saying that I’m not black. Although I am non-white, I also don’t have the same experiences as black people do and therefore cannot do their stories justice the way that they can.
I really debated on how best to write this au, because I want to give the best representation that I possibly can, and I even considered just scrapping it. However, I was really excited about it, and in the end I wanted to provide what representation I can, because as a racial minority myself, I know that some representation (so long as it’s accurate) is better than none at all.
There are no internal monologues about being black in this story, because I don’t know how that would go. I also realize that not all black people share the same exact thoughts/opinions and since I can’t use my own personal experience with racism for this, I figured it best to leave out the internal aspects of it altogether, so that I don’t misrepresent the black community. There is, however, some racism aimed at some of the characters by others. This is something I felt like I could accurately write about, having witnessed and experienced racism myself. The racism is there, presented, and condemned, but I don’t offer much more than that. Discrimination on the basis of race and/or color is something that too many people have faced, and I felt that it was too important to leave out of the story altogether (especially considering it’s part of why Tiana struggled to get her restaurant in the movie itself).
If you made it this far, thanks for reading!! This is something I’ve worked hard on, and I really hope you enjoy it! This first chapter is going to be mostly characterization and setting up the rest of the story, but I hope you enjoy it anyway!
Without further ado, I give you Real to Me!
“Just at that moment, the ugly little frog looked up with his sad, round eyes and pleaded, ‘Oh, please, dear princess, only a kiss from you can break this terrible spell that was inflicted on me by a wicked witch!’”
Virgil felt Patton lean over to him to loudly whisper, “Here comes my favorite part!” Virgil mentally prepared himself for what he knew was coming next.
“And the beautiful princess was so moved by his desperate plea that she stooped down,” Patton was leaning in now, “picked up the slippery creature,” Virgil was leaning away, “and kissed that little frog!”
Pat gave a squeal of delight and grabbed the cat that was walking by, squeezing it so tightly its eyes seemed to pop out. All while Virgil was dramatically sticking his tongue out as far as he could.
That was one thing about his friend that Virgil would never understand. How could Patton possibly think that the story was anything but unrealistic and unsanitary? The princess could’ve contracted some disease! Or maybe the frog was lying and he wasn’t even a prince?! Who came up with those stories?? He needed to have a talk with them.
“...and they lived happily ever after!”
He heard Patton sigh with delight before looking at Virgil’s mama with pleading eyes. “Will you read it again Mrs. Bast?”
“Sorry, honey, we’d better be heading home,” she said with a kind smile. “Say goodbye Virgil.”
“There is no way I’d ever ever EVER kiss a frog. Yuck,” Virgil ranted as he gathered his things from around the room.
“Even if he turned into a prince after?” Patton asked.
Virgil nodded hard. “Especially if he turned into a prince. Princes are just rich boys who do nothing all day but ride on their horses and dance with pretty ladies. I’d have to do all his work for him!”
“Nuh-uh!! Princes are brave, and polite, and after you’re married, they only dance with you!” Pat defended.
“You don’t kn-!”
“Evening Eudora!” Patton’s daddy called as he turned into the room.
“Daddy! Daddy!” Pat jumped up and down excitedly. “Look at my new dress!!” He twirled around to show off the fluffy, sky blue gown Eudora had sewn for him.
“Why, I’d expect nothing less from the finest seamstress in New Orleans!”
“Well thanks, Mr. La Bouff,” Eudora Bast replied. “Sorry to leave so soon after seeing ya, but we’d best be heading out now.”
Virgil vaguely heard Mr. La Bouff give his well-wishes to his mama as Pat was walking over to say, “What if the prince wasn’t lazy and boring? Would you marry him then?”
“I’d only marry him if he wasn’t just some prince in a book,” Virgil stated matter-of-factly. “He has to be a real person that I can talk to.”
“Well duh, silly! You can’t marry a book!” the blond boy laughed.
“Virgil! It’s time to go home baby, your daddy should be home by now,” Eudora called to him.
He ran over to where his mama was standing in the wide, elegant doorway and shouted, “Bye Patton!”
“Bye Virge!!”
~
Virgil always liked the ride home. He could watch the other people on the tram, and wonder what they’re like, and stare out the window at the fuzzy streetlights in the distance. Plus he got to lean his head on his mama’s shoulder and feel the tram rock side to side. It made him feel safe.
When they got near their neighborhood, Eudora whispered, “Go ahead and pull the cord.”
Virgil waved goodbye to the driver as he hopped off the tram and onto the sidewalk. He looked up at his mama as they walked down the street. “Why does Pat wanna marry a prince so bad? He’s already a prince, pretty much.”
“I don’t know sweetheart.” The lights made his mama’s face look so warm. “Maybe he wants to make it official. You could ask him sometime.”
“No,” Virgil said thoughtfully, “I think I’ll just help him find his prince. Oh! That can be his birthday present this year!!”
Eudora laughed lightly and smiled down at him. “I think that’s a great idea, hon.”
Voices rang out from houses along the streets, and Virgil could see families laughing together through some of the glowing windows. The two of them stepped up to the old, brown house and the door that creaks when you open it. As soon as he stepped inside, Virgil smelled the most amazing gumbo in the world, the kind only his daddy could make. He could almost taste it in the air. That, in combination with the yellow light coming from the kitchen and his daddy’s heavy, brown coat draped over the living room chair made Virgil feel like there was a fire in his chest, the kind that you have at Christmas.
“Daddy! We’re home!!”
Mr. Bast looked over his shoulder at the two coming inside, and smiled big. “Hey, Virge! I’m almost done chopping veggies, you wanna help me finish?”
“Yeah!! Can I taste it?” the boy asked as he dragged a chair over to the old stove.
“I’d be hurt if you didn’t,” James joked, helping him up. “How ‘bout you put these peppers in?”
After they’d let the ingredients stew in the pot for a while, Virgil put the wooden spoon to his mouth and his daddy asked, “How’s it taste?”
“Hmm…” Virgil tapped his chin a bit before quickly sliding to the floor, running over to the cupboard, and grabbing a bottle of tabasco. He dashed back over to the pot and shook in some of the sauce. “There! Try it!” The curly-haired boy handed the spoon over to his dad. He laughed as his daddy made a big show of tasting it.
“Mmm, now that has to be the best gumbo I ever tasted!” James grabbed Virgil under the arms and swung him to the ground. “Why don’t you go with your mama to call the neighborhood over? I’ll grab the pot.”
Virgil slid out of his daddy’s arms and nodded before running to the door. He flung it open and shouted as loud as he could, “Hey, everybody! I made gumbo!!” His mama reached where he was standing on the porch and stood behind him proudly, while the neighbors greeted him with “Woo! That smells good!” and he replied with “I made it almost all by myself! My daddy helped a little though.” Mr. Bast spooned out some gumbo into everyone’s bowls, and one by one they picked up their spoons.
It was quiet for a little, the kind that happens when your family’s sat around the table and it’s been a long day, but now you get to eat something and it barely even matters what it is because you’re all eating it in the same place at the same time. Then, though, people start saying things like “Mm-mm-mmm!!” and “this is fantastic Virgil, you must’ve gotten your daddy’s talent.” He could barely stop smiling long enough to chew. (His mama didn’t say anything about chewing with his mouth closed.) (This time.)
~
That night, when Virgil snuggled under his covers, he was smiling. He felt his mama sitting down on the bed by his feet. James was standing right next to her.
“You know the thing about good food?” Virgil looked up at his daddy. “It brings folks together from all walks of life. It warms them right up and it puts little smiles on their faces.” He tapped Virgil’s cheeks when he said it. James pulled a piece of paper out of his shirt pocket and showed it to Virgil, a drawing of a beautiful golden room with fancy tables and soaring ceilings. There were lots of people in the picture, musicians and waiters and diners with nice clothes and big feathers. “When I open up my restaurant, I tell you, people are going to line up for miles around just to get a taste of my food.”
Virgil sat up at that. “Our food.”
“That’s right, baby. Our food,” his daddy laughed and handed him the picture. The boy held it gently in his hands, like it was the most precious thing in the world.
Suddenly, Virgil got up and said, “Oh, look!” He stared out the window.
“What is it, hon?” Eudora craned her head to see what he was looking at.
“Patton’s fairy tale book said if you wish on a star, it’s sure to come true!”
James smiled at him and said gently, “Well, you wish on that star. You dream with all your heart. But remember, Virge, that star can only take you part of the way.” Virgil looked away from the star and back at his daddy. “You’ve got to help it along with some hard work of your own, and then, yeah, you can do anything you set your mind to. Just promise me one thing.” Virgil held his eyes. “That you’ll never, ever lose sight of what’s really important. Okay?” He nodded hard, twice, just to be sure his daddy knew he was serious.
His mama reached over to rub the tight black curls on his head. “See you in the morning, baby.”
“Get some sleep,” James told him.
“G’night,” Virgil whispered as he snuggled deeper into bed.
When the door closed, he hopped up again and went to the window. He could still find the star he had been looking at earlier — it was the brightest, and almost in the very middle of the sky. Almost like it was standing on a stage, waiting to be seen. Virgil closed his eyes and held the drawing to his chest. “I wish, I wish, I wish…”
Rrrrrribbit.
Virgil slowly turned to see the frog on the windowsill.
If he screamed, it was nobody’s business. (His mama and daddy were lucky enough to enjoy his company that night.)
~
A/N: Ok so I realize that it’s a lot of just quoting the movie, but I liked the way they set it up so I figured why fix it if it’s not broken right? But from here on, the characters deviate more from those of the movie, so the dialogue will be a whole lot more of my own :) it’ll be a lot more interesting next chapter, I promise. (And Virgil will be grown next time.)

The Lone Snake (AU): Chapter 1/At The Edge of The World
Alright so...Remember this post from a couple of months ago? Well, I got around to writing the first few chapters and I thought to post Chapter 1 here. I’ll probably post more chapters as it goes along but I can’t guarantee when they’ll be out (knowing me it might be sporadic). Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy :)
-
A03: The Lone Snake
Characters: Deceit and Remus. The others are vaguely mentioned.
Word Count: 957
Relationships: Kingceit (mentioned)/Platonic Demus
Warnings: Blood and injury
Descprition: After King’s untimely death, a heartbroken Janus leaves the Sides and escapes to the edge of the imagination in hopes that no one will ever find him there.
It happened so suddenly, like being drenched in an unforeseen rainstorm. Creativity, king of the imagination and beloved by all, was gone. Split into two sides, the first a young boy dressed in red and white and the other dressed in black and green.
That day, all the Sides wept bitterly over the loss of their dear friend. However, there was one whose love for King was far beyond what anyone could comprehend, and when the news of King's death truly wrapped itself around Janus’s head, his poor heart couldn’t take it and so he fled.
Into the night he escaped, to the very edge of the imagination he ended up and under the protection of the forest he lived. Not a soul knew where the deceitful side had fled too and he believed that no one would care. Janus would no longer bare judgment nor listen to their scornful words. He was gone for good and no one would ever find him, at least, that’s what he thought.
Remus’s hazel brown eyes scanned the tall dark trees and the wilted grass that stretched along the ground. It was bare, that was for sure but he was still intrigued by this forsaken land. Remus often liked to come to the parts of the imagination he had yet to explore. With every resolve in his mind to discover new and exciting wonders.
He swung his bag over his arm and placed his morning star across his shoulders. He grinned and stepped into the forest, his morning star gleaming in the patches of sunlight that leaked through the trees as he traversed the dirt paths.
He wished he could have brought Roman along for the exploration but his dear brother was much too busy to have come with him. Whatever he was sure he’d find something exciting to show off to Roman later.
Remus sighed and wandered through the forest as he looked around for anything that seemed interesting. Suddenly, his ears picked up a scratching sound, curious, he changed course and headed towards it.
Was it a dog digging up something?
Was it an animal hiding its prey?
Was it a person burying a body?
The curiosity was exploding inside him as he reached the place where the sound was coming from. He peeked through the trees and bushes, noticing a hunched over figure digging its clawed fingers into the dirt. Why was it digging? Was it trying to hide something or find something?
Remus took a step forward, trying to get a better look when a twig snapped beneath his boot. The creature whipped its head around, baring its white sharp fangs towards him in the shadows.
He was very intrigued by such a creature, with its claws, fangs, and striking yellow snake eye but even more so by the green and brown scales that covered half its face and ran down its neck, chest, and leg. Though part of his scales was covered by some tattered black shorts it wore.
“Hello there,” Remus said, stepping out into the light.
The creature hissed at him and crouched down low, seemingly ready to pounce at any moment. Which only added to Remus’s excitement. How fun would it be to battle this creature and bring it back to the castle? He didn’t want to hurt the thing but he still wanted to catch it. If only to answer the millions of burning questions in his mind.
How did it end up in the imagination? Was it really a creature at all or was it human? It certainly looked human, but did it bleed the same as a human would? Did it even have blood?
“What are-”
Before Remus could finish his question the creature charged towards him. He quickly threw his bag away and swung his morning star up, blocking the creature's attack. The creature then swiped its claws near Remus’s head but barely managed to cut away some hair.
“Ooh, you're a feisty one, aren’t you? Well, now I’m definitely going to be bringing you back with me.” Remus said. He jumped towards the creature and slammed his morningstar down towards it but the creature dodged it with ease.
On and on it went, Remus swinging his morning star around and the creature dodging with slick ease, like his body was made of liquid. However, soon they both grew tired of this dance and they stood in a stalemate, heavy breath escaping their mouths as both prepared for one final attack on the other.
Remus and the creature narrowed their eyes at each other as the creature brandished his claws and crouched down low, growling and gnashing his teeth towards Remus. The creature then pounced, going towards Remus's left as he swung his morning star towards it and then twisting its body towards the right of him, slicing its claws across Remus's right shoulder and deep into his flesh.
Remus howled in pain and stumbled backward as he instinctively grabbed his shoulder. He peeked at the wound through his fingers and winced at the amount of blood seeping out of it.
“Wow, your good,” he said.
The creature replied with a hiss but Remus only smiled and grabbed his bag, lugging it over his uninjured shoulder.
“Well, I guess capturing you is going to be harder than I thought,” Remus said. “No matter, I’ll only have to ask my dear old brother for help. Until then, you stay here okay? I promise to be back for you soon so just stay put like a good little snake creature thing.”
With that, Remus took off scampering into the woods and towards home.

All in the Family
Chapter 90: Flesh, Blood, and Bone
"So, does this mean Hufflepuff won?" Peter asked groggily. Even having landed upside-down in a warm, plush chair, the vibrant yellow walls with little badgers painted on them and the earth colored carpet gave it away. "How utterly rude," he finished in a mutter, thinking Harry had been slighted if that were the case. A tie was more than fair-
"Prongs? Moony, you two alright?" Peter flipped out of the chair and landed even more painfully than when he'd been upside down, but ignoring any cricks in his body he'd get for that later, he quickly scrambled around to see Sirius bending over the two in concern, rightly so. James's leg was still smoking slightly, and even as he watched, Remus lost the battle of keeping his eyes open, they rolled back into his head and he passed into sleep right on the table he'd landed on.
"We'll live," Prongs groaned, ignoring Padfoot's outstretched hand and inspecting the rest of his leg for further damage. Thankfully for now it just looked like a really bad sunburn, rather than charred flesh. "Remind me to kill Hagrid though."
"Don't think that'll be top of my list," Sirius crouched down beside him instead, casting a healing charm for him. "Even you wouldn't take those odds mate."
"I still owe him a good one," James returned sourly, still prodding the angry flesh until Sirius slapped his fingers away. "Only reason that blasted skrewt didn't kill us was the sphinx got territorial."
Peter choked in further concern and made his way over to Remus to check he really was asleep. Despite the slight snoring, he easily could have been dead.
Sirius didn't wait for permission this time and grabbed Prongs under the arms, hoisting him to his unsteady feet despite his protests and dragging him to the chair Peter had vacated. Then he came back and Peter was quick to help him get Moony to the couch, he didn't so much as twitch as they sort of half-dropped him down, he definitely wasn't light.
"Probably best we all get some sleep while we can," Alice agreed, standing surprisingly close to Sirius. "What with the tournament being over, and who knows what's coming for us next." Then she patted him lightly on the arm and whispered for him alone, "just remember what I said."
Sirius gave her a strange look as she went back to Frank's side, not quite in agreement, but he'd think about it regardless. For now he shoved Remus's legs at least slightly out of the way and claimed the other end of the couch again, ignoring the strange looks he got from Peter and James for this as there wasn't a lack of seating, but both of them were clearly just too exhausted themselves to care enough to ask, thankfully, as they tried to make themselves comfortable.
Frank watched the exchange with bewilderment, eyeing the shirtless stud of Hogwarts as it was clear some kind of interaction had happened between them, but brushed it off even before she slipped her hand into his and smiled for him alone. "How do you like my common room?"
"Lovely," he complimented with a genuine smile as he looked around once more. "I'm honestly jealous we can't switch houses now." It was a round, low-ceilinged room with a colourful profusion of plants and flowers that seemed to relish the atmosphere of the Hufflepuff common room: various cacti stood on wooden circular shelves (curved to fit the walls), many of them waving and dancing for no apparent reason, while copper-bottomed plant holders dangled amid the ceiling caused tendrils of ferns and ivies to brush your hair as you passed under them. James Potter seemed to be eyeing them with a careful eye Frank couldn't blame, he remembered the Devil's Snare as well, even if such a thing would never be here.
A portrait over the wooden mantelpiece (carved all over with decorative dancing badgers) showed Helga Hufflepuff, toasting her students with a tiny, two-handled golden cup. Small, round windows just level with the ground at the foot of the castle showed a pleasant view of rippling grass and dandelions, onto the grounds beyond. These low windows notwithstanding, the room felt perennially sunny.*
"I hope we get to go to the dorms as well at some point," she nodded to the rounded doors that led off. "But the couches are plenty comfortable," she squeezed his hand and the two curled up under the mantle and began to have a soft whispered conversation of what the other had done while separated in the maze. She never really got around to saying what she'd talked to Black about while stuck around him, but Frank hardly noticed that. He squeezed her tighter and shivered with distaste at the trap she described, while Alice smiled even broader he'd managed to have at least a semi-normal conversation with one of the Marauders, like her. They really weren't so bad individually it seemed, they just all enhanced the worst in each other apparently, she laughed to herself without sharing that thought aloud.
Only Lily and Regulus didn't seem to want to settle, though neither was acknowledging the other anymore despite the fact they shared the exact same thought. It was too easy.
All throughout this tournament Harry hadn't really had much of a struggle, now apparently it was just over? Lily kept flipping the blank pages of the book, it had landed right on top of someone's potions homework this time, but with at least Lupin and possibly Potter already asleep, no words were appearing. She'd seen how far along Regulus Black was though, and there seemed a decent chunk left, more than just the wrap-up of him going back to the Dursleys. You-Know-Who's plan hadn't seemed to come to fruition at all...
Alice had been right about one thing though, they both acknowledged to themselves, may as well catch some sleep now before they added any new nightmares to the mix with whatever did happen.
The floor was so soft Lily was tempted to just curl up right in front of the fireplace, but instead levitated a couch over there instead, mentally apologizing to whomever had been sitting here. She wondered once more what happened to these places once they left, and if a poor group of students would find themselves on the floor with no idea why their couch moved when they left once more.
Regulus curled up uneasily in a chair, not expecting to be able to sleep much in the bright common room, but his traitorous body was already listing to one side before he'd even finished the thought.
Lily was trying to walk her dog around her favorite forest spot, and doing a terrible job of it. The black beast kept tugging her in all sorts of directions no matter how much she scolded, and then when she finally got him to sit, he had a bone in his mouth, and he began chewing on it, loudly. Disgusted, she backed up and heard the crunching intensify, and suddenly the bright forest faded all around her, and she was in the Chamber of Secrets again, the dog had turned into a stag, still chewing on that bone that she now saw had a human foot at the end-
Potter stood before her chewing obnoxiously on some crisps, his hand holding out an unopened bag to her. "Alright Evans?" He asked cheerfully, not even spraying any of it on her, a small miracle. "Better enjoy that while you can," he said quickly to the indignant look she gave to him, though it was more for him hovering over her while she slept than the offered food this time. "It's the last of the food we've got on us, hopefully we get sent to the feast next."
She snatched it away and flounced over to where Alice and Frank were untangling themselves from each other, yawning and holding their own bags with bewildered faces as if they had no idea how that had happened.
Sirius had successfully summoned the bag back to him again and lobbed up for another throw. Regulus's reflexes were still on autopilot though, and he swatted it away once more, still snoring softly. Snickering in delight at the game, Sirius summoned it back for a fourth try when James circled back to him and snatched the bag into his hand.
"I should have woken you up last," he rolled his eyes, "now you've probably gone and crushed them all."
"They're still edible as dust," he shrugged without remorse.
James snatched Sirius's still mostly full bag and left the now abused one in its place, ignoring Sirius's mutters of daddy syndrome setting in as he changed the subject, "have you even tried waking him up yet?" Needlessly gesturing to Remus still snoring loudest of all.
Sirius hadn't, their feet were still tangled together and he was enjoying that too much. Aloud he said, "I'll certainly give it a try. Now that he's had some rest, at least we should only have to threaten bodily harm rather than acting on it."
James left him to it and went over to drop the bag gently on Regulus's face. That finally snapped him awake, and the bag fell to the floor, where he proceeded to crush it under his foot as he stood in surprise at how close Potter was. James sighed for the wasted food but turned away and left once more, grabbing the book and settling down next to Peter just a hair's breadth farther apart than he normally would have and flipped the book open, waiting patiently for the words to appear as Remus was finally roused.
When he saw them at last, a crisp lodged in his throat, and Peter reached over to thump him on the back in concern, but stopped just as quickly when he saw for himself.
"That's, not what I would have expected," he whispered to no one, flinching back away and studying the common room around them with new, worried eyes.
James completely agreed, as he had no idea why he was saying the words, "Flesh, Blood, and Bone."
If anybody had still been groggily waking up before, he had all attention on him now.
Lily heard about Harry and Cedric finding themselves in a graveyard instead of school with such a tight pit in her stomach, she wanted to demand from Potter what he'd really fed her. Surely this was all his fault, he was making this up just to scare them, he'd fed them something to make them all nauseous, he'd started all of this by bothering her at the end of class!
Her anger at him just didn't last though as a figure approached the boys, she knew this wasn't anyone's fault but You-Know-Who's. Sometimes she hated to be right.
Regulus watched and listened with abject horror only on Peter as Potter said the words. Kill the spare echoed in the room, it didn't even sound possible that had come from a teenager's mouth. The spare, what could that possibly mean? His brain shut down, even as he looked at all the older kids around him, their faces pale and looking sickly. The spare, what? He looked around again at the common room, and now refused to let it click together.
Potter wasn't letting anyone live in denial for what that could mean. He read in a rough, unrecognizable voice of the light coming out of a wand, and leaving Cedric Diggory's eyes.
James wanted to put the book down. No, more than that, he wanted to tear it into a million little pieces and then set each one ablaze and throw the ashes at Peeves and see if he could incinerate them further somehow. Nobody had actually tried that, he realized in near sudden hysterics. Why hadn't he thought of that, he was the most destructive person in the castle! Surely, if they just blew up this ruddy book, they could all just go home!
Before his hands could even twitch to begin though, he looked up at those around him. What would happen to them, even if it worked? Would they be trapped here forever without their means of escape? Trapped inside, though Cedric would never be able to come back here. He wondered if his homework was lying on one of those tables, never turned in. What was the point of all of this?!
Sirius moved so fast Peter barely had time to see him coming. Even if he had though, he'd do nothing to stop him, he hoped James wouldn't this time either. He deserved whatever thrashing that was about to happen, he'd actually killed someone, in cold blood, no hesitation. He was a monster, beyond redemption- He wheezed when Sirius's arms locked around him, unable to stop himself from tensing and pulling away on instinct, but found no force constricting the air out of him. Instead Sirius was holding him like a child, the muttered oaths under his breath were directed at himself.
"-never going to turn into that- won't let him be such an idiot again-"
Peter looked around wildly to see James and Remus too looked far more concerned for him, than about him, for once.
It took all he had not to burst into tears all over again as James forced out every cruel deed of this future. Hitting Harry! Creating that potion, using his own hand to bring You-Know-Who back to life...it never seemed to end, and it was all his fault! He'd do anything to atone for this...

*The description of the common room came from JK herself. I don't know where she would have slipped it into the series myself, but I forever wish she'd gotten the chance.

Study Me How to Please the Eye Indeed
Synopsis: The boys are starting college and uh oh, their roommates are cute. Idrk where I’m gonna take this yet, but there will definitely be romance involved.
Pairings: Eventual Analogical, Royality, and Dukeceit; background Remile
Warnings: cursing, Remus (like he says weird stuff; you know how he is)
Next Chapter
Introductions Pt. 1
Virgil stood outside the door, not wanting to enter. He had no idea what his roommate would be like. Is he messy? High-maintenance? Is he loud? Vulgar? Annoying? Mean? A million scenarios ran through his head as he stood staring at the door to number 22.
Maybe he hasn’t arrived yet, Virgil hoped. Maybe I can get all my stuff together and head out before he gets here. This wishful thinking was enough to get Virgil to put his hand on the doorknob. With a deep breath, he steeled himself and turned the handle.
There wasn’t much to the small dorm room. Split down the middle into two identical halves, there were two beds, two dressers, and two desks. On the wall opposite the door was a decently sized window that overlooked the courtyard. A large suitcase and a blue backpack sat on one of the beds.
“Guess I’m not first,” Virgil grumbled to himself. He tossed his backpack onto the remaining bed, and flopped down beside it. This is a nightmare. Why did I decide to go to a school halfway across the country? Why did I subject myself to this torture? Virgil pushed his long bangs down to cover his face, and breathed in the darkness. He prayed for quiet. Just for a moment, he needed everything to stop, and be still. It was all moving so fast. It was only last night that he said goodbye to his family at the airport, but it felt like an eternity.
Suddenly the door opened, and in walked a tall, skinny boy carrying a small cardboard box in his arms. He wore a faded nasa tshirt and blue jeans, and a pair of thin, rectangular glasses slipped down over his nose as he walked. His dark hair fell straight across his forehead, and a few light freckles speckled his cheeks. He didn’t seem to be loud, messy, vulgar or mean.
God dammit, thought Virgil, he’s cute.
The boy startled as he spied Virgil on the bed, nearly dropping his box.
“Oh, hello,” he spoke while adjusting his glasses, “I didn’t expect to see you for awhile. Wanted to move in early too, I suppose?” His voice was unexpectedly low, and very smooth. He sounded like a host on a podcast or a jazz radio station.
“My name’s Logan, nice to meet you.” He placed the cardboard box on his bed and extended a hand towards the other boy.
“Virgil,” he replied, and reluctantly shook Logan’s hand.
“Since I got here first, I took the liberty of choosing the side I wanted. Hope you don’t mind,” Logan said rather plainly. While his expression never changed, he seemed friendly enough. Virgil felt he was able to relax a bit around him.
“So what are you majoring in?” Logan queried as he resumed his unpacking.
“I, uh... I haven’t decided, yet,” Virgil replied, embarrassed.
“Exploring your options? That’s cool. Nothing wrong with that,” Logan said calmly, “I’m studying physics; hoping to get a minor in astronomy too. I’ve always been fascinated by space.”
Jesus Christ, thought Virgil, I’m rooming with a freaking rocket scientist. God, I’m such a loser.
Except, Virgil didn’t feel as inferior next to him as he thought he would. Logan didn’t come across as the egocentric, know-it-all type of guy. He seemed very relaxed, unassuming, and kind. He had a quiet sort of demeanor, even if he was rather talkative. Virgil got the sense that it wasn’t so much that he had a lot to say; more so that he didn’t have a lot of people to talk to.
“Space is pretty cool,” Virgil mused, trying to keep the conversation going.
“You think so? You should take an astronomy class then. Might find it’s something you’re interested in. Or maybe join the astronomy club, they do stargazing events every other week, I think,” Logan rambled on.
“Maybe,” mumbled Virgil. Logan clearly wasn’t lying about his fascination.
“What other stuff are you interested in?”
“I’m... not really sure. I guess I like... I don’t know, video games? But you can’t really make a career out of that.”
“Sure you can. Video gaming is a huge industry, you can do a lot with that. You can focus on game design, like art or storytelling, or you can go for the actual coding if that’s more you’re thing.”
“I guess.”
“Well, don’t stress about it now,” Logan turned away from his boxes to face Virgil, “You’re a freshman, most of your classes are gonna be GE stuff anyway. You got plenty of time to figure it out.” He gave Virgil a kind smile.
“Yeah, I guess so,” Virgil was surprised. He had heard it all before— don’t stress, don’t worry, don’t fret— but this was the first time he actually felt calmed by those words. How was it a stranger was better at calming him down than his own mother?
“Hey, you hungry?” Logan interrupted Virgil’s train of thought, “I haven’t eaten yet, I was gonna go find something after I finished unpacking. You wanna come with?”
Any other day, any other circumstance, and Virgil would have said no. Imagine how awkward that would be: lunch with a complete stranger? A cute stranger? Who knows what could go wrong? But there was something about this boy. He didn’t feel like a stranger; Virgil had known him five minutes, and he already felt more comfortable with him than anyone else he had ever known. Maybe— maybe this was worth a shot.
“Sure, why not.”
******
“19, 19... Where the hell is 19?” Roman grumbled as he walked down the hall. This is ridiculous, he thought. Here’s number 20... and here’s 32. Where did 32 come from?
“You’re looking for 19?” A voice crept up from behind. Roman turned to see a mess of curly hair and huge pair of glasses. They were attached to a young man in a flowery shirt and light jeans. He carried a suitcase that looked about three times his size, absolutely bursting at the seams, but it didn’t seem to bother him at all. He wore a bright smile on his round, speckled face and beamed up at the tall boy in front of him.
“I’m looking for 19 too. You must be my roommate! My name’s Patton, nice to meet you!” He shifted his enormous suitcase to his other side and stuck out a hand. Roman shook it, and noted the strong grip. This guy’s not as squishy as he looks.
“Name’s Roman. Do you have any idea how this numbering system works? I’ve been walking in circles for like half an hour now.”
“Yeah, it’s a little confusing, but I think I’m starting to figure it out. It looks like they group odds and evens together in blocks. Here, follow me.”
This Patton sure was a gregarious fellow. It didn’t seem to matter that they had just met; he acted as if they had known each other their whole lives.
I hope he doesn’t think I’m an idiot, Roman thought as he picked up his bags, I know how to count. It’s just these stupid dorms are organized in the weirdest ways.
Together, the two boys wandered up and down the halls of the dorm. They passed door after door, scanning the numbers as they went, but still found no sign of number 19.
“You’re sure you know where you’re going?” Roman asked, a bit more irritatedly than he meant it to come out.
“Well, all the other groups made sense,” Patton replied with a puzzled look on his face. “Maybe we should just ask somebody.”
“No way,” Roman stopped in his tracks, “I don’t wanna be labeled as the dumb freshman who can’t find his own dorm room.”
“The only thing dumb here is this dumb numbering system,” Patton retorted, “Come on, there’s no harm in just asking.”
Before Roman could stop him, Patton went up to the first door he saw and knocked. The door opened to a tall young man in a leather jacket. A pair of dark sunglasses sat perched on the end of his nose, even though room behind him was dark. What, is he high? thought Roman, It’s like four in the afternoon. Patton, however, didn’t seem to notice.
“Hi there! Sorry to bother you, but do you know where number 19 is? My roommate and I can’t seem to find it.”
Sunglasses cracked a wide smile. “Oh, so you guys got lucky number 19, huh? Yeah, I’ll show you where it is.”
Roman eyed Patton suspiciously, but Patton just shrugged and followed Sunglasses down the hall. Roman hurried after them, watching the tall boy carefully. He was certain he was about to walk into a prank, but he didn’t want Patton to be humiliated all by himself. Poor kid was just too friendly to know better. You don’t just go knocking on strangers’ doors. Everyone knows that! But, then again, Patton had this air about him; he was so trusting, it made Roman want to trust too.
Roman was still lost in thought when Sunglasses stopped abruptly. The boys turned to see a door with a large sign that read 61.
“There you go: lucky number 19. Someone flipped the sign upside down a few years ago, and no one’s bothered to fix it. We just call it Lucky 19 now.”
“Well, no wonder we couldn’t find it,” Patton squinted up at the numbers on the door.
“God, finally.” Roman breathed a sigh of relief and dropped his bags on the floor. “I’m exhausted. Hey, thanks for your help, man.”
“No problem,” Sunglasses replied.
“It was really nice meeting you!” Patton cut in, “I’m Patton by the way, this is Roman,” he gestured towards the red-haired boy as he sat down on a suitcase.
Sunglasses smiled a friendly smile at the boys. “Remy. If you need any more help just knock. Emile and I are always around.”
“Thanks, Remy! See you around, then!” Patton beamed as Remy sauntered back down the hall. He then turned and peered smugly down at Roman.
“See? What’d I tell you?”
“Yeah, you sure told me,” Roman chuckled softly. He watched as Patton excitedly pulled out his key and opened the door. There was something about the way he lugged that humongous suitcase into the room, giddily gesturing for Roman to follow; something about his energy, his friendliness, his easy disregard for social protocol; something about that disarming smile of his that caught Roman’s attention, and he smiled as he watched the curly-haired boy from the hallway.
I think I’m really gonna enjoy getting to know this guy.
******
As usual, Remus was bored. He had found his dorm room awhile ago, but hadn’t felt like unpacking, and now sat bouncing a baseball against the wall of number 28, debating his options. Perhaps pranking his roommate wasn’t the best idea. He would have to live with this person for the next few months; he didn’t want to start off on the wrong foot.
Of course, Remus couldn’t usually avoid that anyway. His eccentric personality turned a lot of people off, and growing up he didn’t have a lot of friends. It never really bothered him before; after all, if he was bored he could always go annoy his brother. But now, sitting in the small dorm, Remus realized just how alone he was.
However, he wasn’t alone for very long. Remus turned at the sound of the door opening, and found a short young man standing in the doorway. He wore a rumpled yellow button-down shirt, a brown flannel wrapped around his waist, and a black beanie to cover his dark, curly hair. The left side of his face was covered in light splotches, and his left eye was considerably lighter than his right. Both eyes, however, shared the same tired look, and his mouth drooped into a tired frown. Actually, Remus thought, he looks pretty shitty all over.
“Hey there,” Remus stood up to greet the boy, “Are you my roomie?”
“Is this your room?” the boy said blankly.
“Last time I checked,” said Remus, curiously.
“Then I guess I am,” the boy finally moved out of the doorway, and over to one of the beds. He tossed his bags onto it and sat down on the edge, pulling out his phone.
“I’m Remus,” Remus said awkwardly, unsure how to continue the conversation, “what’s your name?”
The boy seemed to ignore him for a moment, but then slowly looked up and stared at Remus.
“Dee.”
“Dee?”
“Yeah.” The boy looked back down at his phone.
“Just Dee? Not DJ? D-man? Double-D? Deez nuts—“
“Just. Dee.” He spoke through gritted teeth. Obviously not one for jokes.
“Ok. Dee. You got it,” Remus didn’t want to push the issue. He sat down on the opposite bed, trying his damndest to be polite.
“I play the violin,” Dee spoke, not looking up from his phone, “Is that gonna bother you?”
“I like to masturbate at four in the morning. Is that gonna bother you?” Remus blurted out.
“...You serious?”
“Well I do. But no, I’m kidding.”
“...Right.” Dee eyed Remus skeptically, but didn’t seem all that bothered, surprisingly. Maybe he was just too tired to be overly disturbed by anything, but Remus was happy enough to have his attention, if only for a few moments.
“I like your face.”
“Um.”
“I mean, like, your skin. It’s cool. Is that some kinda skin disorder?”
“It’s called vitiligo, and I’m actually really sensitive about it.”
“Well if you’re so sensitive, why don’t you cover it up?”
“...Ok, I’m not actually that sensitive about it.”
“Well then, why’d you say you were?”
“...I don’t know.” Dee continued to watch Remus with an inquisitive look. It excited Remus. He hadn’t held a conversation this long in ages. It was refreshing.
“...You really like to say what’s on your mind, don’t you?” Dee asked.
“You mean I’m rude and annoying, don’t you?”
He thought about it a moment. “...No, not exactly. Just... unfiltered.”
“Well, better someone who speaks his mind than someone who hides everything about himself, in my opinion.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” said Dee, suddenly defensive.
“You’re name’s not really Dee, is it?” Remus said with a sly smile.
Dee paused for a long time, considering how to answer.
“...No,” he said finally.
“Where did Dee come from?” Remus asked.
“Long story.”
“I got time.”
“Well I don’t,” Dee suddenly began shifting things around on the bed. He looked uncomfortable; it was a look Remus was all too familiar with. “Look, I’ve been up almost 24 hours now. I’ve got a massive headache, and I need to get some sleep. No offense, but are you capable of shutting up for like, twenty minutes at least?”
Damn, thought Remus, and it was going so well. “I’ll do you one better,” he said as friendly as possible, “I’ll head out for a little while, give you some space. Be back in a couple hours.” He gathered his things and headed for the door, not waiting for an answer. But as he stepped out into the hallway, he heard a muffled voice rise up from the bed.
“Nice meeting you.”
“Huh,” Remus smiled to himself as he shut the door behind him. Perhaps he didn’t totally mess this one up after all.

What we’re your thoughts about the book?
Some asks were answered already in this post already so I just smacked those asks in here at the part where I talk about the topic in question, which is why the answer may not 100% fit the question.
Massive “Seasons of War” spoilers below the cut:
First off, of all, this book read like GoT/any zombie movie ever. With the necromancers being like the white walkers, Vile is the night king and daugar are the wights. even with the necromancers crumbling away after Vile got killed Tell me I’m not the only one seeing that.
I think there was a lot of fanservice and some confirmed headcanons in the book, which I really liked. Saracen magic got revealed, there was a return to the Leibniz dimension, the Vile vs Vile fight so many wanted finally happened (tho that was kinda underwhelming) and the Dead Men returned which I’m sure made a lot of people happy.
Ravel poisoning Saracen during the war and Vile being so powerful bc of being dead were two popular headcanons that got confirmed. And I am personally so happy that this book killed the ‘there is no sarcasm in the Leibniz dimension’ headcanon bc I bloody hated that.
Finally, Landy tries to please the old fans instead instead of what feels like purposefully pissing them off. I guess the phase 2 book sales weren’t that great so far (nice try blaming it on the pandemic, but no).
I’m also glad that the romance in this book was kept to a minimum bc The Val/Militsa kiss in the beginning, yikes, fanfiction has better written kisses than that. And the the dialog for the lesbian love triangle (bc for some reason Ms.Wicked aka Laura’s self insert is Militsa’s ex??) was cringy and stiff as hell, it felt more like first graders trying to do a dramatic play and not natural at all.
Surprisingly enough Mevolent’s and Serafina’s relationship seems to be the most healthy and romantic in the entire series and I have no idea if that was on purpose or if Landy just has twisted views on relationships.
I however am actually kinda happy with how Mev was written. He was sympathetic and charismatic, tho some of the stuff he did doesn’t fit to they way he’s characterised when he’s on screen (I know he is probably lying 90% of the time he speaks, but still). Like, banning all languages apart from English doesn’t seem like something a man who cares about culture, literature and art would do. It also seems kinda stupid bc those languages will be forgotten eventually and if they need an old text translated no one will be able to do it. Also, why English? Isn’t Mev old enough that his first/original language should be Gaelic? So weird. I have the feeling this was mainly done so Valkyrie (and with that the audience) can understand what the people on the continent are saying bc I very much doubt she understands/speaks any languages apart from English.

But I loved that Mev was also shown as insanely smart. He managed to outsmart Val multiple times. And I love how he doesn’t need his magic to fight, how quick and agil and skilled he is. So I take it that his fighting style is more based on agility and not getting hit, and he uses brute force only when forced into it (by Darquesse/the Unnamed). I was wondering about that bc his armor is made of leather and chainmail instead of metal plates which is considered light armor and not something a tank type of fighter would wear.
What really rubbed me the wrong way tho was when he was talking Tanith and Skul and more or less stated the war wasn’t a challenge anymore ever since Skul died. Or when he was talking to Val being like ‘you’re more powerful than I could ever hope to be’.It bothers me even more knowing that Val is based on girlfriend!Laura. Does really everyone and everything in-vers, even a big bad like Mev, rub Skul’s/Landy’s and Val’s/Laura’s ego? Big yikes.
Crespular Vies is surprisingly fun. At first I thought the two men going after the Obsidian Blade were hired by the Unnamed, but since that wasn’t the case, I think Crespular Vines hired them that so he could show up in time to save Omen and his friends. I think him opening up to Omen about being Skul’s former partner came too unprompted, too quickly and that he is trying to gain Omen’s trust so he can get close to Skul through him. I think another giveaway that that’s the case is bc one of the men Omen had to meet to get his brother back wore a Cleaver outfit and Vies gave that man probably the same reasoning Omen gave him.
That said Omen’s chapters were surprisingly enjoyable. By what I had heard of others I expected a sad sack that can’t fight worth a damn.
I’m not found of the Temper/Kierre stuff, it came out of nowhere.
Val is overpowered AF, it seems that she can get on Darquesses level with more practise/learning how to keep the doors open. She certainly needs to be nerfed.
Also I skipped the Darquesse chapters bc I’m giving negative fucks about her and the plague doctor.
The last 10% of the book were too rushed and felt like half finished thoughts.
Also I was kinda really bothered by the citizen of the Leibniz dimension. They were cartoonishly racist and it was very pretty black and white for the most part AKA everybody good is in the Resistance and all other sorcerers are evil/corrupt. That is also shown by there being children in the Resistance camp while there was no mention of children in the mage cities. In reality, most people are fairly mellow and it’s just a small percentage that is either really good or really wicked. I would have liked to see more racism towards mortals in form of apathy or ‘the soft bigotry of low expectations’ like I’ve seen it from Serpine in DotL. You know, make it a little less black and white.

Also, I understand the mermaids, but the bats in Europe were random AF. Like, I would understand it if they were just in Romania/Transylvania as a nod to the Dracula-typ vampire legends originating from there. As a plot-device they weren’t really needed to keep the protagonists from flying bc the danger of getting spotted by necromancer by doing so should be enough of a threat to keep them on the ground. This might seem nit-picky of me, but the bats just seemed so bloody random to me like wtf????
And also bc I’m a slut for magical creatures, I would have really liked to see more of them than just daugar and giant bats. Some undead cut together and resurrected necromancer experiments would have been pretty cool tbh. Like whatever the hell this is.
Something like zombie bears would have also been acceptable, I mean, bears are fucking terrifying on their own, let alone when undead and decaying.
I’m kinda pissed at China that she wanted Skul to kill Nef, but it does seem in character. Of course I still don’t like it bc I headcanon as Nef, Eliza and China having been besties during the war (no matter what canon says, I’m keeping that headcanon). I’m surprised Skul didn’t let Wreath have Nef considering that. Then again, he thought Nef might still be useful. And he was right. I loved how Nef actually had an essential part in saving the world by throwing the bomb. So proud of my boi <3 But Skul refused to kill him even after that. Could it be that Skul is finally getting character growth and development? 👀
Aaaand, China’s continuing to be a tyrant. With Tanith’s sense of justices flaring up shown when he killed the city governor, Erato, and Nef being shown to go after people that betray him (Lorien) I think those two are being set up to go after China to kill her (and to probably kill Creed too). Imagine Eliza joining the team bc she want a piece of China too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I feel sorry for Baron, but at least he got a few speaking lines this time around. Still, I really wanted Nef to save him. :C Like, he suffered so much before he died too considering he spend a year alone starving and thirsty with broken legs in the middle of nowhere wft, why is Baron getting fucked over like this? #BaronDeservedBetter2020 he is the only honorable person of all faceless followers and he’s the one that gets screwed over in every book he shows up in, why tho- 😭
Speaking of Nef, I absolutely loved him in this book, he was a delight and stealing the show whenever he was on the page, despite being used as  punching bag through pretty much the entire book. If people have always treated him that way I can see why he turned evil jfc that poor man. Despite that, he was still being such a clever, funny and relatable bae <3 He’s described as ‘cynical, and nasty but also kinda cheerful’ and as liking to ‘needle’ people (aka trolling and roasting) by Val and that essentially describes every shitposter on the internet ever. And I so loved the way he roasted Saracen lmao
And how he’s so clever, like the Lorien part was my favourite scene closely followed by how Nef essentially talked Remus Crux into getting himself killed, just 👌 smart snek boi, I love him <3 Also I hope he keeps poisoning everybody thoughts against Skul like how he had already been doing it to Tanith, he’s poison in human form and that’s just my jam.
That obedience bracelet was kinda fucked up tho.
Why does this thing even exist? Aren't electro shocks or any other form of pain enough instead of shutting his nervous system down/rendering him completely defenceless? I feel like some messed up mage 100% used it to keep himself (sex) slaves at some point in time :/ Landy might have gotten that idea from some fucked up hentai. Even the implications of the name "obedience bracelet".... I can’t be the only one that got creepy perv vibes from that thing, right?
Btw what the fuck happened to Harmony? You know, Leibniz Serpine’s girlfriend. She hasn’t been mentioned again. Did she die? She didn’t seem too found of him in DotL, was she plotting against him and he found out about it, killed her and fled the Resistance? Or did she die prior to him leaving and it was part of the reason he left bc she was the only thing that had tied him emotionally to the Resistance?? Or Landy just forgot  she existed. I would not be surprised.
Of course my biggest issue with this book was how he retconned Nef’s magic and how he took his trademark, his red hand, away, but more about that in a different post.
TL;DR: Nef was a delight even though he was done dirty. Mev’s scenes were a 50/50 split between good and bad. I actually liked the Crespulare and Omen chapters. The Unnamed was a disappointment. The last 10% of the book were to rushed and the final fights that were supposed to be the biggest were underwhelming. The rest is meh, didn’t really care tbh. Let’s be real here, I only bought this book bc Nef played a bigger role in it, anyways.
