*staring into a mirror*
Hey... hey jhom?
I'm sorry. I came to say that I'm sorry.
- @oxymoronic-dunce-cap
*the same yellow-eyed jhom from before appears upside-down in the mirror*
Ohh really now? Had a change of heart did we?

I'm trying out another kindle unlimited author, recommended by a friend from school, and currently I am halfway through the first book of a trilogy trying to process "why don't I care about this protagonist" into something actually halfway analytical.
I think there's SOMETHING there about the difference between a powerless character (fine and cool) vs a passive one (hard for me to get invested). Even or especially if the character has the power to DO very little, I think creators need to show them caring about things! Making judgments! Having internal lines drawn or goals their limited choices are driven by!
But this MAY just be my definite personal bias toward liking characters who enter the scene with strong moral convictions.
#'young woman in over her head plunged into a dangerous system she can't control' covers so much ground#many of them i love#many of them leave me cold#i think... i think even when the protagonist is powerless for much of the story you have to show them making moral choices#even if those choices only affect THEM e.g. cinderella#katniss is both dour and powerless much of the time but we see her character shine through by her active reactions to things#volunteering of course. but also caring about the avox girl. liking cinna. sharing things with peeta#we see her principles in her inner monologue and we see her try to be true to them. we also see her responses to kindness!#and then my girl pet who is also VERY powerless in her first book especially#but never passive#she is poking and prodding. she's making tea and coffee as a deliberate tactic to get what she wants#she's looking for the good in these people while also making her own moral judgments and acting on them#(keeping tuatu's visit secret. getting that woman out of the house. saving tuatu in the climax of course)#or liz sharp of miss sharp's monsters. more freedom than the first two but still on this list because she is Making Moral Judgments#she's not being batted about by her society OR just acting on impulse she is taking in what happens to her and responding#according to her own convictions. so we get to KNOW her early#this particular protagonist so far is just#bad things have happened to her. she feels bad. she made one (1) choice to surrender her freedom for the people she loves (good!)#now she has no follow-up steps to that. she is a passenger in the plot. she has ALSO not engaged in critical reflection about anything#she could be stunned into apathy by the Bad Things (dead parents. betrayal. betrayal 2) but i'm not getting that from her either!#there is SO much going on in your life girl why are you just coasting#i have seen you be responsible for a few chapters and then you just kinda stopped#i haven't really seen you be kind OR clever since then so what was even the point of putting you in a position of weakness

Oh ok, umm who are you? I don’t think I’ve met you before?

Hello? Z? Are you here anywhere?
I...*stepping out rather confused by the unfamiliar voice* oh! You must be one of his friends...but I'm afraid he's off fighting again, but he'll return soon...

love that Thad interprets inertia to mean continuing at all costs and Three takes it to mean stagnancy, bc theyre both right!! objects in motion saty in motion objects at rest stay at rest just like newton said
exactly yeah! because i knew i wanted Thad to reclaim the name for himself (with the whole "it means what i say it means" mantra) it needed to mean more to him than just a representation of Thawne Legacy Kill The Allens etc.
a reoccurring thing in Frequency that i liked to lean into was this idea of Good Inertia and Bad Impulses (bc Bart and Thad as narrative foils continues to rotate in my brain forever). i think Bart's solo does a cool exploration of both good and bad impulses throughout the run, it's kind of the central conflict of the whole thing, but it's usually in regards to Bart either unwittingly getting himself into trouble or accidentally solving problems by just leaping into everything without thinking twice. but the concept of inertia is pretty exclusively portrayed as negative. which is fair, the phrase "coasting on inertia" is in the lexicon for a reason. but i think it deserved a fair shot - the concept of continuing in spite of everything can actually be a really good instinct when you're in a bad situation. keeping up that momentum, moving forward no matter what, there's definitely something inspirational there that appeals to me.
and an aspect of impulses that didnt get as much spotlight in Bart's solo was the kinds of impulses that recoil at the thought of unpleasantness. the impulse to hide from responsibility, the impulse to distract from pain, to avoid discomfort, etc. (big part of that is because in Bart's solo, most of the worst moments of his life hadn't happened to him yet) so i wanted to explore it a little in Frequency
anyway yeah, Bad Impulses and Good Inertia. which was kinda in conversation with Bart and Thad's dispositions, and how they run counter to typical hero/villain narratives. (Bart doesn't really get people, goes his own way, has pretty emotionally selfish and sometimes violent tendencies when he's pissed off. Thad's much more of a people person, lives for praise and pleasing others, seems to forget to do violence when he's supposed to i.e. that time he put Bart in VR jail even though Bart was completely incapacitated and by Thawne logic Thad should've just killed him. it just... doesn't occur to him as a thing he should do lmao)

similar to Goodhart's Law (when a measure becomes a target, it fails as a measure), we should also have "when a critique becomes a shibboleth, it stops being critique"

May 6th, 1965 -
Alan Price tells Bob Dylan that he has left The Animals...
and i have never been the same since
#60 years ago today......#i hope d.a. pennebaker knows how much he fundamentally changed my life by inadvertently capturing this raw emotion of alan's on camera 😔#this scene..... this scene....... there is so much to say from both a filmmaking perspective AND a totally-normal-animals-fan perspective#the way pennebaker so wildly whips the camera around to catch alan's expression in that moment after bob asks the question...#sooooo reflective of alan's racing thoughts in that moment#bob's expression after the fact says everything you need to know... the way he even glares up at pennebaker briefly..... ooohhhh#bob knows that this is alan at his most vulnerable... drinks compounded with the emotion he feels after leaving the band so suddenly#the moment i saw this scene i thought to myself 'i need to know more about this alan price...'#'i need to know who specifically in the animals made that twinge of pained regret cross his face... why he's so torn up inside...'#little did i know that the person who alan was so torn up over later went on to say that the night alan left the animals was#'the worst night of his life' .... and later went on to compare their relationship to a love affair#AND that he told alan that if he left the animals then he would want to leave too.....#goooosh eric describing alan's presence in this film as 'being under bob's spell' huuurts.... I COULD GO ON AND ON AND ON ABOUT PRICE-BURDON#anyway.... i personally see this scene and alan as a whole to provide the emotional climax for the film#where the audience gets to see bob also with his guard completely and utterly down. even more so then in the savoy jam session scenes.#seeing a bit of himself in alan in that moment... his relationship with his folk roots not unlike alan's relationship with his band#i love when bob says 'i don't feel like singing' and alan immediately responds with 'you will when you get out there' aaaa#also the bit at the end where bob.2 checks on alan and he's breaking the bottle over the piano and getting all giggly again..... aaaaaA#apparently that piano is still at the newcastle city hall to this day.... i need a photo with it#thank you to bob neuwirth as always for looking after alan i can't thank you enough 🙏#pennebaker said that when the door closes at the end it's supposed to symbolize the halfway point of the film.... love that so much#dont look back#don't look back#bob dylan#alan price#bob neuwirth#classic rock#60s rock#the animals#things i said today

Just call me Jhom, and uh... honestly, I'm bored, living in a near empty void all by myself, what better things do I have to do but keep up with hermits.
*He appears in the bottom of the pan*
A little warped but otherwise fine, I’ve been spoiled with everyone using mirrors. I’d recommend a river but the noise there is obnoxious for conversing.
You will have to settle for the pan for now, but maybe later I'll take you to a river.
Why are you here reflection person?

Really sucks when a former friend starts messaging you again, and life has gotten weird, and you don't know how to get past the awkwardness and make things like they were; like we were on some friends talk all day good morning good night stuff, we exchanged nudes at a point in our relationship, now I'm past the opening "how are you" salvo looking at the driest response ever, and ope, lookit that, I'm actually just talking about the weather. And work.

What are your voice headcanons for your OCs? :)
Took a while to compile all the needed clips and credits but HERE YOU GO! The official voice headcannons for all my very mentally unwell characters YIPEEE!! Thank you for caring enough to ask about it (was expecting most followers to just scroll past the post since it’s not Mr. Puzzle related lmao). I cherish them all oh so much and definitely didn’t project my emotions onto them during my time in high school! :’D
This isn’t the direct casting verbatim for the characters btw. For instance, if I was to actually pitch creating a show surrounding these characters to some network down the line, I’d try to find an actual non-binary actor to portray Daniel & better match certain character ethnicities. But as it is, this is a good starting point so I can convey what type of tonal inflections and vocal range I’m envisioning for them in my head. Hope it helps! <3
*Content Warning for the video: Minimal amount of curse words and depressing themes. Trust me the somber tone makes sense and resonates with lore context/overarching storylines

Hey you…you watching me from the reflections and shadows
wanna come join me on an adventure or something?
Well I can only do stuff through reflective surfaces, due to living in the mirror dimension
And while I have no idea on how well it would play out, I’d certainly be down to try some kind of adventure.
