Doctor Who: The Keys of Marinus (1.5, BBC, 1964)
"I want to speak of your father. You know, he was a very wise and brilliant man and I know how you felt when you learned of his death."
"And his life's work destroyed."
"Oh, no, no, no, no, I wouldn't say that. His work will go on, only not quite in the same way. But I don't believe that man was made to be controlled by machines. Machines can make laws, but they cannot preserve justice; only human beings can do that."

Tales From the Crypt

In an anthology film, pacing is everything. Freddy Francis’ TALES FROM THE CRYPT (1972, Tubi) wisely puts its two strongest stories at the beginning and end. The middle of the five stories may drag a big, but at least it has a moving performance by Peter Cushing as an old man terrorized by a snooty neighbor (Robin Phillips). Five strangers touring a catacomb in England are waylaid by a mysterious robed figure (Ralph Richardson) who confronts each with their fate. Since they’re a thoroughly unlikable lot, it’s fun to see them get theirs, particularly in the two best stories. The film opens with a justly famous episode in which Joan Collins kills her husband and tries to make it look like an accident while also fighting to keep a killer dressed as Santa Claus out of her house. It’s all scored to Christmas carols played on the radio, which makes it even more delicious. In the final story, Nigel Patrick takes over a home for the blind and starts cutting corners, a big mistake considering one of the patients is Patrick Magee. The story’s attitude toward disability is contradictory. At one point Magee says that being blind has heightened his senses (a popular myth that won’t go away), but the whole concept of isolating the blind in an institution seems hopelessly out of date. And just to put that plot element into question, the patients are shown to be pretty darned capable. The whole film is professionally put together, which is an improvement over a lot of the crap I sit through, and though the other stories tend toward the pedestrian, the memory of Collins fighting off Santa and Patrick screaming in the dark have made it a popular favorite. There’s also the curious question of Phillips relationship with the older man (David Markham) who shares his home. The credits and Wikipedia list him as Phillips’ father, but they really seem more like intergenerational lovers, with Phillips reveling in the newfound wealth and social position he’s gotten in return for services rendered. Or maybe it’s just me.

i’m actually so serious about ewan mcgregor’s filmography. no one else is serious enough abt it. there’s so many incredible movies and about 90 of them are underrated or cult classics. star wars is great but it’s almost one of the least interesting things he’s done. there’s trainspotting! there’s moulin rouge! shallow grave! down with love! i love you phillip morris! big fish! perfect sense (devastating movie)! birds of prey!!! not to mention his season of fargo!!! where he plays not one but TWO characters and blows it so far out of the water i was genuinely sobbing by the end of it. like on my knees. good stuff

(The Untold Legend of The Batman #1): These parts of batman's backstory were completely undone by the Crisis on Infinite Earths, and I really don't know how to feel about that. On the one hand, Alfred raising Bruce is so common that I really can't help seeing them in a father/son style relationship. But also, I think the loss of Uncle Phillip and Mrs. Chilton is a real shame. The irony of Joe Chill's mom being Bruce's childhood caregiver is too delicious to ignore. It's a clever thing.
Also, just look at Bruce Wayne as the first robin. I think Jim Aparo and/or John Byrne did the art for this comic, and they really make him adorable. I love the idea that bruce wayne was robin before anyone else, even if it is a very silver age style concept. A lot of this pre crisis stuff is amazing, but incredibly underappreciated.

Okay this is a good splash page but I find it really funny how Bruce gives up after Signal and just calls them "protectors of Gotham."
Inner monologue: "shit, what was the blonde girl called? And the other kid? Tom??? Whatever, just wing it, Damian is the important one!"
