I've now seen multiple people complain that the RT fandom "infantalizes" Yrliet and doesn't hold her responsible for anything and I have to ask...
Are we in the same fandom?
She's *constantly* criticized for her every action and character trait by the fandom. And not just the Imperium LARPers, a lot of people on the more progressive side do it too, they're just way more polite about it and couch it under "oh, she's just so poorly written" or hold double standards between her actions and similar ones by other, more popular ones *coughcough* Marazhai *coughcough* Heinrix *coughcough* Pasqal
I'm not saying anyone actually has to like Yrliet, but it's so bizarre how many people are convinced that there's some kind of wide-spread conspiracy to mischaracterize and over-defend her when half the fandom hates her and the other half seems to forget she exists most of the time.

Look, even as someone who loves her, I can fully admit that there are plenty of reasons to distrust/dismiss/even kill Yrliet during or after Act 3. I think saying "I/my RT are not able to get over this" is perfectly fair
But it does frustrate me how many of her most ardent haters are complete hypocrites about what she's gone through herself.
Yrliet's entire home was completely destroyed. Most of the people she has known and cared about in her life are dead and the few survivors are homeless refugees. We learn later that most of them were either killed (many by humans) or captured by the Drukhari to be tortured to death.
The Rogue Trader's direct predecessor was responsible for this, a person that most people in the RT's orbit still praise and speak of with respect. Abelard even tells her to her face that he's glad her home was destroyed.
And then there's the rest of your retinue. Most of them openly hate her, as do the bridge officers, and Heinrix in particular speaks regularly about how she should be tortured and killed.
Yet these same people, the ones who think falling for Marazhai's trap and getting you all captured is worthy of death/banishment, seem to think that she should just get over all of this direct aggression and the fact that she remains cautious and standoffish with humans is a sign that she's just a terrible person.
Make it make sense

20 writer questions
tagged by: @lamortwrites (thank you!)
Tagging: @andrigyn, @defira85, and anyone else who's interested! I'm a little behind the curve so I don't want to tag a bunch of people who've probably already done this, but please consider yourself tagged if you're interested
How many works do you have on ao3?
Nineteen!
What’s your total ao3 word count?
65,507
What are your top five fics by kudos?
1. Möbius Strips and Other Such Eternities (T, 8k, Ketheric writes letters to Isobel after her resurrection) 2. Departure from the Vulgar Crowd (M, 5k, dark urge/gortash, first meeting) 3. They Who Seek to Deceive (M, 10k, dark urge/gortash, post-coronation reunion) 4. Would You Give the Devil This Dance? (Would You be a Part of His Plans?) (T, 8k, dark urge/gortash, Wyll goes to a party and tries to square a circle) 5. The Bloody Spectacle of It (T, 3k, dark urge/gortash, a bhaalist observes his god and master)
What fandoms do you write for?
Bg3 is the only fandom I've put anything up on ao3 for so far, but I've also got a critical role campaign 2 wip and some rogue trader wips that I'm working on!
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I do! Eventually (oops). I always try to respond because comments mean so much to me and I want the person who left the comment to know how much I appreciate it! I'm just, uh, bad at knowing how to do that so it sometimes takes me awhile
What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Oh hmm, that's hard to say! A few of my fics end on darker or less happy notes, but those tend to lean closer toward horror than angst, if that makes sense. I think I'd have to say either Would You Give the Devil This Dance? (Would You be a Part of His Plans?) for just how hard Wyll is working to make things seem okay when they clearly aren't or Not Glory but Power for how the near triumphant ending for young Enver is curdled with our knowledge of where this will lead him.
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Also a somewhat difficult question! Probably They Who Seek to Deceive, in the sense that the main two characters certainly seem very happy about how things have turned out!
Do you get hate on fics?
Happily, no.
Do you write smut?
I would say that I haven't yet, but on the other hand my spouse says that I absolutely do. When I pointed out that there isn't any sex in any of my fics, they just said "you know that's worse, right?" So I guess it all depends on what you consider smut lol.
Do you write crossovers?
I haven't yet, but I might give it a try someday
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of! I think my stuff is too niche to be worth stealing for clout, honestly
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope, no way is anything I write on that level of popularity!
Have you ever cowritten a fic before?
I have not! I have no idea how that would even work with my slow and chaotic writing process
What's your all time favorite ship?
Really, really good question. Hard to say. I think dark urge/gortash has to be up there. Shadowgast, obviously. Probably Merlin/Arthur from the TV show too (yes I have bad taste).
What's the wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I have the start of a very long Gale pov fic that's meant to cover all of acts 1 and 2, plus a tiny bit of act 3. It was going to focus on Gale and Vesper's developing relationship, on Gale slowly putting the bhaalspawn-shaped pieces together, and on moral flexibility and the relationship between wizards and power. So an exceptionally long fic already, made longer by the long-winded chatteriness of Gale's pov reinforcing my own worst tendencies, lol. It's one of those things I doubt I'll ever finish just for the sheer length of it, especially given that I'm not the fastest writer and I keep putting it aside for other projects. Maybe someday!
What are your writing strengths?
I'm a pretty decent worldbuilder I think, though that doesn't necessarily get a lot of airtime in fic. I'm solid with character voice and internal monologue as well.
What are you writing weaknesses?
I get lost in the sauce really easily and end up writing more than is really necessary or helpful to tell the story I'm trying to tell. I'm tend towards overexplaning things and not trusting people to pick up in what I'm trying to say (I'm working on it!)
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic?
If it's done to serve a purpose in the story, why not? Especially when you're pulling from a source material that does a lot of it to begin with.
First fandom you wrote for?
Almost certainly warrior cats
Favorite fic you've ever written?
It's tough and a very close competition, but in the end I think I have to go with They Who Seek to Deceive. The sheer amount of planning and double meaning I put into everything the characters say and don't say is what makes it for me, I think.

20 Questions: Writing Edition
Thanks for the tag @cawyden-gaming
How many works do you have on ao3?
I have 5. I am newer to fanfic writing, though I've been reading it forever.
What’s your total ao3 word count?
73,396
What are your top five fics by kudos?
I only have 5, so it's the four BG3 fics and then my Rogue Trader fic.
What fandoms do you write for?
BG3 and Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader. I've started a few other fics here and there over the years, but never got to the point of posting them.
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try to respond to every one, because I want people to know their feedback/comments/love/whatever is appreciated. Any time anyone reads anything of mine, I'm grateful.
What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
None of my fics have angsty endings, though I am not opposed to writing one.
What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
It will be Mongrel Hearts, whenever it's done. Happy in a Warhammer 40k sense, at least.
Do you get hate on fics?
Nah, ain't nobody got time for that.
Do you write smut?
Sure do! I love writing emotion, and sex is a highly emotional act.
Do you write crossovers?
I have not.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of, though I have had my writing stolen in other venues. Not a good feeling.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Don't think so.
Have you ever cowritten a fic before?
Nope.
What’s your all time favourite ship?
Right now it's Heinrix x Visenya, from my RT fic. Also a big fan of Henry x Hans from KCD2.
What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
We talking fic or other...? For fics, it's probably a canon Durge x Gortash fic that will never see the light of day.
What are your writing strengths?
Probably dialogue and character voice. I really love exploring characters through their dialogue and using dialogue to define certain characteristics. I also like weaving bits of character voice into prose so you get a feel for the character as you're looking at the world through their lens.
What are your writing weaknesses?
I am not a brief person when I write. It's criticism I receive on my professional writing, so I know my hobby writing has got to be bloated with prose and character exposition. I do feel like I am slowly becoming a better self-editor, though.
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic?
I have to get writing translated all the time for work, so I'd probably do okay with it as long as I had someone who is a native speaker to help with translations.
First fandom you wrote for?
And published a fic for: BG3
Favourite fic you’ve ever written?
Definitely Mongrel Hearts. BG3 got me into writing fanfic, but Rogue Trader made me fall in love with it.
Gently tagging some people I don't think I've seen tagged yet. @icasticonoclast @vspin @plethomacademia @amasec @andrigyn @swordbisexual @eregar @lilac-lich

I will now contribute to the Warhammer 40k fandom. Specifically Rogue Trader! That new game which is essentially the type of game I’ve been waiting to play in the 40k universe.
And thank fuck it’s not about the Space Marines (the Lamenters are the only valid chapter, also the Salamanders).
And it has romance! Love truly can bloom on the battlefield. My character is a sanctioned psyker warrior from a medieval Imperial World. Magic Knight as it were. A magic knight who just came across a very tall, very magic lady. I love how their romance goes 0 to 60 so fast.
Rogue Trader: Hey, you’re very tall and pretty.
Cassia: Excuse me, good sir! I am a lady and such impropriety will not be tolerated! *shoves a book in his hands*
Rogue Trader: *looks down at the book with a post it note on it. On the post it note is written: How to Seduce Me*
Cassia: *goes off on a tangent about proper etiquette and decorum while opening the book in the rogue traders’ hands and book marking several chapters before walking away*
Rogue Trader: *head empty, only tall, mutant wife*
Yes, this how their romance goes down. No, I will not be accepting any constructive criticism. This is canon.

So, when I post about Rogue Trader, I'm posting about what Owlcat has shown me. I don't think I'm going to be burying myself into the lore like I did with Pathfinder and with D&D and various other fandoms I've been in.
I like the concept of Warhammer 40k when it first began as a satirical war game that made fun of Right Wing Authoritarianism after the creators had to deal with Marget Thatcher and conservative policies. They took Warhammer Fantasy and happily borrowed from 2000AD (the comic IP where Judge Dredd, another satire against Right Wing Authoritarianism, originated) and Dune (which criticized Right Wing Authoritarianism... I'm noticing a theme) and made it so grim and dark it was ridiculously silly and bombastic and probably the least problematic take of Orcs, ever.
Then people started taking the Ironic Right Wing Authoritarian Satire ... seriously. Games Workshop abandoned the idea of satire because it made it more money. People sincerely loved the concept saw IRWA as a corrupt society that feeds Chaos and fucking love War Boyz, Robotic Pharaohs, SO MANY FUCKING ELVES, and Squatz and the craziness of the fandom.
And there are others don't see the RWA government as ironic and they're actually the good guys.
I do not have the energy, time, or money to parse the lore and fandom beyond Rogue Trader and the wiki. So if I write stuff that is Absolutely Wrong to 40k... forgive me. I just cannot be accurate during these times for MY enjoyment.

still trying to get the hang of Tumblr function, i like this one
RT APPRECIATION WEEK!!!
Times and times again i gave you words of praises for you art, especially those you did for me...and lately, my two dear Rogue Trader portrait for Silas & Cara. You really did brought new life and fuel to my imagination for these characters, and I'm so glad that you worked on, and get what they were all about through your art; but like all of the other art you did for me, you are always in sync with what I had in mind and I rarely had to ask for correction, perhaps even rolling with the changes and visions you brought...
But, most importantly here,I'm thankful that I discovered your art in general, I don't remember what it was unfortunalty, maybe a Critical Role piece... Still, be it your more personal pieces (such as Vincent and Elayne's, i still have so much to catch up about them) it's always a joy to see your blog pop up on my timeline. I'm always thankful for all of the wonderful portraits you did for the community, so many Rogue Traders, rogue trading all over the place.
RIBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBZZZZ AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
SCREAMING FLAILING THANK YOU MY DEAREST FRIENDDDDDDD
I'm just so happy you approached back then in my Critrole / D&D era, and that you won't stopped and then it evolved into something completely amazing,! It's been so pleasant just chatting with you about everything!!!
I'm SOOOO looking forward to hear about your adventures in the new DLC, of your playthrough with your darling Cara, her experiences, thoughts about future romance with Heinrix and/or Solomorne, can't wait to hear and discuss with you it all very soon!!!!!!!
So lucky knowing you and is such a pure joy being friends together! Thank you for staying around thru all these years, for your unwavering support for my art and in general, it's really lovely sharing the RT fandom space with you💖

4. Episode I: The Phantom Menace - D tier
This is the first instalment in the Prequels Trilogy. Although I gave it a D-tier rating, I do enjoy this movie, do not get me wrong! I think this movie is severely criticized unjustly for some aspects. I gave it this rating because on its own it could be better, but knowing other background knowledge and if there were less borderline racists instances it would deserve a shining B tier rating.
We get introduced to some great characters like Jar Jar Binks, Darth Maul, Anakin Skywalker, Padmé Amidal and Qui Gon Jin. Unfortuneatly one of the reasons this movie gets flack is Jar Jar's aloofness, which I can agree is a bit much at times
But I would go as far as arguing that this is the entire point! JAr Jar is comedic relief in a movie for children. He falls, he gets in weird situations and talks weird: what else could kid want? In the clone wars, he remains just as silly, but he does gain some layers, showing himself to be a good leader at times, even under pressure of being discovered by Genreal Grivieous in episode 4 of season for called "Shadow Warrior". But the actor that plays this goofy character got an unreasonable amount of hate for his portrayal of the character and for...his skin color? That's right, in an interview with Vanity Fair, Ahmed Best retells his experience with the toxic Star Wars fan calling him "every racial stereotype you can imagine" to a point where his performance made him contemplate suicide. He plays an animatronic as much as Chewbacca and yet that's what the people on the internet decided was wrong with him, and that just goes to show how toxic fandoms can get with sequels. But the actor, even after swearing he would never return to this Universe, came back as a Jedi Knight who saved Grogu from order 66 in the third season of the Mandalorian! I am personally happy for him and hope he gets the love he deserves.
Another character we meet is pre Darth Vader aka Anakin Skywalker as a kid. He is an upbeat young man, even when he is kindof a slave, and he already loves to invent and fly ships..
He meets the Queen of Naboo and quickly falls in love in a, its true, cringy way, but he is also around the age of 9 so it should be understandable! She is nice to him when no one else apart from Shmi ever seemed to care.
Certainly Watto never cared. A despicable character who has the Skywalkers as slaves. The Toydarians' first appearance as since been changed but his shady trader's attitude, greediness and physic are reminiscent of vile antisemitic stereotypes. At least he has a purpose to the story, he's the origin of Anakin's dark side in a way. The design of the species was edited in the Clone Wars in order for them to be more neutral looking but it still fells wrong for many. https://www.chsglobe.com/43852/commentary/star-wars-a-tale-of-racism/
In the same vein, there is the members of the Trade Federation who are money driven also. They are harsh on the depts of the planets and are rather shown as cowards. They also wear cloths reminiscent of ancient Chinese royal clothing and also "Yellow Peril" characters popular in shows like Flash Gordon, an inspiration of George Lucas'. Creating aliens is one thing, but basing them on hurtful stereotypes that are embedded in society is another.
We get introduced to another of my favorite villains of this universe, is Darth Maul, he gets his first live action appearance until Rogue One as the Leader of the Shadow Collective, his crime syndicate. He is rather silent in this instance of himself compared to his crazier Clone Wars self.
Overall I did enjoy this movie, and the additional lore from the Clone Wars I think only makes it more enjoyable!

it weirds me out how vehement some people get in their hate for Yrliet.
Like, don't get me wrong, I totally understand not liking her or even killing her off because of spoiler reasons, but the number of people I've run into with detailed fantasies about having her tortured and killed (and showing up to unrelated posts talking postively about her to share them) is honestly kind of disturbing to me.

Also, I'm just going to say it: I'm pretty sure that part of the reason so many people in the tumblr RT fandom act like she doesn't exist or make excuses for not liking her is because her presence makes Heinrix look bad.
He's insanely racist towards her from the moment they meet, long before she does anything more than exist near him, and a lot of people like to downplay his flaws to point of ignoring them entirely, so it's best if we don't pay attention to her too much so we don't have to think about that.
Not everyone, of course, I know there are other reasons for it as well, but I would bet that has something to do with it for a chunk of the tumblr RT fanbase
I'm not saying anyone actually has to like Yrliet, but it's so bizarre how many people are convinced that there's some kind of wide-spread conspiracy to mischaracterize and over-defend her when half the fandom hates her and the other half seems to forget she exists most of the time.

just bulk-replying to this rather than spamming my followers with responses - apologies
@ravelsquadespresso - that's honestly I think at the heart of a lot of people's dislike of her (beyond the general "hur dur I hate xenos" and blatant or internalized sexism). A lot of people absolutely hate it when a video game character has an identity outside of the player character or doesn't automatically go along with everything they do.
And I also agree about a lot of people just refusing to see her perspective at all. "I'm innocent, so why doesn't trust me (even if she doesn't know half of what I know and in fact is getting very bad signals)?" A lot of people just refuse to empathize with her at all.
@momandragon - while I do agree with most of what you say, I would push back a bit on characterizing Jae's particular situation as "just a prank". Recording and broadcasting a sexual encounter without permission is a form of sexual assault IMO and while I do think Jae gets hit with the same misogyny issues that other female characters in the fandom do, I do think that shrugging off that particular thing as no big deal is a disservice to the situation. The RT can choose to forgive her without the player being a brainwashed simp (just like they can choose to forgive Yrliet for the Commorragh situation), but that doesn't make what she did nothing and I don't think PCs being upset by it is inherently an overreaction, either.
@youquzhiji agree about Cruderarch seeming to be turbo-racist and that in a very twisted way she might be better off without them.
I've now seen multiple people complain that the RT fandom "infantalizes" Yrliet and doesn't hold her responsible for anything and I have to ask...

bringing this back due to some recent discussions on other platforms, and I would also add that I find it very odd (and not in a cool way) the number of things that people call her out for while giving a pass to other companions for the same or very similar behaviors.

I don't even like Yrliet, at all, such that I usually won't even recruit her (she really doesn't need to suffer the Imp bozos among my hangers-on on top of the horrible tragedy of her craftworld's destruction); but making this rot about her 'betrayal' make sense is impossible. Her worst antis remind me of snaters (if yk, yk).
Look, even as someone who loves her, I can fully admit that there are plenty of reasons to distrust/dismiss/even kill Yrliet during or after Act 3. I think saying "I/my RT are not able to get over this" is perfectly fair

Yet these same people, the ones who think falling for Marazhai's trap and getting you all captured is worthy of death/banishment, seem to think that she should just get over all of this direct aggression and the fact that she remains cautious and standoffish with humans is a sign that she's just a terrible person.
Make it make sense
