It’s so hilarious to me that Rush Clovis asks 6’2, trained martial artist, war hero/criminal known Galaxy-wide, built like a brick shithouse, with a METAL ARM, Anakin Skywalker, to a fistfight, and then was SURPRISED when he got his ass beat

In my head, Vader relives every single moment he ever had with Padmé over and over again. Partly for comfort, partly because he misses her, but mostly to torture himself.
I wonder, if in all his remembrances, he thinks of how Palpatine admitted he knew of their marriage (Revenge of the Sith novelization by Matthew Stover), and yet he still sent Padmé on a mission to basically seduce Rush Clovis.
And I wonder if it ever crosses Vader's mind that Palpatine did this just to drive a wedge between them. That Palpatine tried to get between him and his wife.
I wonder if he ever thinks about how many times Dooku tried to have Padmé assassinated, but Dooku was just taking orders from Palpatine.
I wonder if he thinks about every risky mission Palpatine sent Padmé on, missions where she got captured or badly hurt.
Vader is not stupid.
You know he thinks about these things.
You know he hates Palpatine for all of this, and so much more.
And yet, Vader stays by Palpatine's side.
Not because he believes Palpatine is his friend. Not even because he believes Palpatine will help him become more powerful, though he definitely tells himself this lie.
Vader stays because Palpatine is the only one who accepts him. If Vader left, where would he go? What purpose would he have? He would have to go live out his life completely alone and isolated, and he would be forced to confront all the grief and the horror he caused.
Nobody loves Vader, nobody ever could.
He hates himself.
Because he was the Chosen One, who couldn't save his mother, who couldn't save Ahsoka, who couldn't save his wife, who couldn't save his unborn child.
And this existence, of being used and made to do all these terrible things, is what he deserves.

Does Anakin sometimes act a bit unlike himself in the clone wars? Sure
Do I believe he had every right to beat up Clovis that one time? Absolutely
Would I like it better if Padmé had been the one to beat up Clovis when he crossed her boundaries? Most definitely, she should have been the one punching him on the floor
Anyway

Rewatching the TCW Banking Clan arc for fic purposes and jesus christ Anakin is really have a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day huh
I mean yeah he was completely out of line in how he treated Padmé (like fair okay his distrust of Clovis was actually valid and based on solid facts and not just jealousy, but come on man, trust your wife a bit jeez), but there is so much going on here, I do kinda understand why he snapped
Like remember that this happens very shortly after Ahsoka walked away from him. He was pretty much the only one who believed in her innocence, he fought with everything he had to help her prove that and succeeded, and she still chose to walk away from him. From the Jedi Order, of course, but also from him personally. It's been shown time and again that Anakin has abandonment issues, and for his padawan who was not just his padawan but also his daughter, younger sister, and close friend, to leave him behind must have rattled him deeply. Seeing Padmé suddenly become close with a proven untrustworthy ex whom she shortly before still despised only reiterates his fear of being left behind. And then Padmé actually does so, actually tells him she wants a break. And for good reasons, because honey that relationship has become toxic as hell in that arc and if I were her friend then I would've told her to run too. But it does serve to strengthen Anakin's fears of abandonment and the much deeper one of not being good enough, especially because it was his own behaviour that caused it.
Also: from TCW the only arc we get in between Ahsoka's departure and the whole Banking Clan mess is Fives's discovery of the inhibitor chips. Which means that on top of missing Ahsoka, Anakin is also dealing with grieving a fellow Jedi and two of his troopers (whom he is shown to know personally and appreciate as such), on top of the shock of the circumstances under which they died (he may believe Palpatine's story that it's a Separatist plot, a virus or something that caused Tup and Fives to turn on the Jedi and the Chancellor, but that hardly makes it a less horrible turn of events tbh). And next to him personally this must have affected the 501st deeply, something which Anakin, being Force-sensitive, would in turn have been affected by as well.
And then there is Palpatine Palpatining all over the place, like the man absolutely knew what he was doing when he told Padmé and Clovis to "work closely" with each other right in front of Anakin, once again feeding his distrust and anger and isolating him from the people who could have a positive effect on his life. Perhaps he was even using the Force to directly manipulate Anakin's emotions as well, wouldn't even put it past him against this point. Fucking asshole. I mean I gotta admire him, man is playing fucking five-dimensional chess at this point and he's still winning, but damn
Anyway, as usual it all boils down to this:

Y’know what? There’s something about the Clovis arc that really bothers me that I gotta get off my chest. A lot of people say that Anakin’s actions are out of character, and while I agree, I think Padmé is also very out of character. I just cannot believe that she would be so angry with Anakin for trying to protect her - would she be mad at him for saying she “has no say in the matter”? Absolutely. But Padmé “to be angry is to be human” Amidala would not say “get away from me!” to Anakin for beating the shit out of someone who was just trying to assault her. Padmé “I truly, deeply love you” Amidala would not tell Anakin they should “stop seeing each other” over him hurting someone she clearly doesn’t even like. Yes, she would be frustrated with him for interfering and overreacting, but if the Tusken Raiders weren’t a deal-breaker for her, why would Clovis be one? It doesn’t make sense, it felt like the writers were trying to turn them into the “constantly bickering couple” trope, and that just isn’t them at all

Show me an instance where Anidala is toxic or abusive without:
mentioning disagreements, fights, or arguments, as this is something ALL married couples experience. Having an argument or disagreement is not TOXIC.
mentioning the Clovis incident, because yeah Anakin shouldn't have beaten him half to death but also last time Padmé was alone with Clovis she almost died. Anakin knew Clovis was very into her, and the dude was literally working with the Separatists--who also had tried to have Padmé assassinated on many occasions–not to mention, in the Revenge of the Sith novelization Palpatine LITERALLY ADMITS that he knew about Anakin and Padmé's secret ceremony on Naboo, he admits he knew they were married to Anakin's face, and he intentionally assigned Padmé to Clovis in that second TCW Clovis arc because he wanted to drive a wedge between them which ended up failing in the long run. "The Clovis Incident" is literally part of a manipulation and not a natural progression of their relationship.
mentioning the "choking incident" on Mustafar because at that point, he was Vader. Yes, he's still Anakin Skywalker, but he's been so corrupted by the Dark Side that this doesn't exactly count toward Anakin– him doing this and turning to the Dark Side is literally so out of character, so UNLIKE Anakin that Padmé loses the will to live because she feels like she's lost Anakin because Anakin would NEVER do this. (In the Legends EU, so many characters act EXTREMELY out of character once they give in to the Dark Side. Take Ulic Qel-Droma, or Exar Kun, both Jedi who wanted to forward the cause of the Jedi and then inexplicably support the Sith after experimenting with the Dark Side.)
These are the top instances people use to try to claim that Anidala is toxic/abusive and I just don't consider them to be valid arguments. Anakin is unstable and terrified of losing the people he cares about, but he literally NEVER HURTS PADME until he isn't Anakin anymore.

Anakin a new doctor comes to a mental hospital and falls in love with one of the patients, Padme. Her husband, Clovis, was abusive to her and committed her to the hospital. Anakin promises he’ll rescue her. Padme becomes infatuated and the other patients love him. His nurse, Ashoka, who works alongside him senses something off but she keeps her suspicions to herself since he is the first doctor who acts humane. He and Padme do run off together. Unfortunately the next day Clovis and the real new doctor Obi Wan arrive and reveal Anakin wasn’t a doctor but a patient who was motivated to escape when he saw Padme.
