who is a person who is three?
fanart for @theminecraftbee ‘s fic ‘solving counting sheep’ which i read in a single sitting. me when stories about identity <3
also fun fact i had another version of the watcher’s mask up until the finishing touches basically. the reason for this was that i misread ‘plain white oval with a symbol on it’ as ‘with a plain white oval on it’. somehow. i may be dumb
Tumblr media
i now know the mask is supposed to be black on white but i’m not repainting the whole thing </3 the harlequin mask barely looks like a harlequin so we’re taking some liberties here anyways

ponders the implications of fic narrators using nicknames to refer to characters (eg. "jan" about a character who's known in the canon as "janice") and anachronistic terms (eg. a character in a medieval setting was briefly dumbfounded, but then "his brain came back online")...

In "SUNNY", off of her album 1/6, Sunmi affectionately tells her lover "you make me brave/feel like I'm invisible." That line stumped me for a while. Sounds like a paradox: since when does going unseen equate to being bold and adventurous?
... Once I got it, that line hit like a train.
Sunmi's WARNING album, which came before 1/6, is all about having to put on a show as a performer and as a person. Sunmi's fame makes her stand out almost everywhere she goes. Whether she's in the mood for it or not, "the show must go on," as she laments in "Heroine."
That sweet final track, "Secret Tape", is muffled and short because it's a duck behind the curtains. To me, this song is simultaneously a brilliant piece of art and its own antithesis. A pared-back version of the tracks before it, it functions as a break from the performance Sunmi loves and hates: the exhilarating exhaustion of making art in public.
In "Borderline", she sings "feels like a bird is living in my head/please don't piss me off!/I shouldn't have said that, because I am a good girl ... please be on my side". Like "Secret Tape", this song is a final track with a stripped-back quality. Heavy bass replaces the precise, playfully shimmery effects coating the songs prior. "Borderline" begs the listener to hear the person underneath it all. Sunmi is a famous woman, a solo artist, who has spoken openly about her mental illness. When her mask slips, people attack her. Viciously.
Most instances of ppl talking about feeling brave are about them making a point and calling attention to themselves or some larger movement they are part of. But for a pop star like Sunmi, is it any wonder that she feels her freest and when she's out of sight? When no one's tracking her every move? When she can chill with her partner, somebody she trusts enough to let behind the curtain of her performances all the time?
The opening line of "SUNNY" goes "you can call me by my name", and that ties it all together. Sunmi is making a pun: "sunny" in English sounds a lot like her name. "Sunny" is also how Sunmi's loved one makes her feel—safe enough to shed her disguises, both the artistic artifice and the personal insecurities. Comfortable enough to be her radiant true self. The person she can only be when the world isn't watching.
