as someone who doesnt get a pinch of that Protagonist Sparkle to begin with, he can openly say he wants to leave anytime…. and unlike dave, he actually Can leave the scene anytime. but he can never be truly Free from the story via permanent character death like the other trolls.

his irrelevancy is indeed relevant - he’s there so u can point him out.

while his image is intended to be a relic of past internet subculture, his role is not only about hehehaha being a Chad or a 2000s cyberforum 2²chan haxxor ragequit gamebro.

his continued existence also happens to add a Bit to the overarching themes of homestuck! a Bit that gives him longer-lasting thematic relevance compared to the trolls who could’ve had more character potential but didnt get to survive beyond the main story.

compared to dirk's character, who has aged phenomenally well into the present (themes of control + AR + artificial intelligence, clearer exploration around navigating relationships/sexuality, infinite possibilities of self-splinterhood and trait inheritance), sollux's potential is really... contained. bitter. defeatist. limiting and frustrating in the way old tech is.

the world continues moving on to shinier, brighter, more advanced automated things - minimalist and metaverse or whatever but sollux is still here 🧍‍♂️ going woohoo redblue 3d. So I like to populate the background characters of my fic with characters from another series as just a fun reference, but I feel like some people are reading into it a little to much. It's like- well, there's a watsonian perspective on it and a doylist one and a sort of meta-watsonian one.

From the watsonian/in-narrative perspective? You know that line from that Stucky fic everyone loves about "we deserve a soft epilogue?" I like to imagine AUs for main characters where they still live in an animeverse, but are free from the burden of being The Main Character. Usuke Urameshi lives in Karakura town, but he was never The Spirit Detective. He's just some former punk with mild psychic abilities who runs the ramen shop Ichigo goes to sometimes. Josuke is just some guy that has enough power to be a shinigami, but he's just like, rank and file. You see him in crowd shots. They're alternate universe versions of their full powered, main character selves and probably happier than those versions.

From a doylist perspective, it's a fun game of reference tag to play with the reader. A sort of where's Waldo of random characters from related series. Sort of like putting Samuel L Jackson in a bit part in your movie and giving him a purple prop to fiddle with. He's not playing Mace Windu, but for sharp-eyed nerds, he is making a star wars reference. Sometimes it's just for fun, sometimes is a way to lay on some really subtle thematic context. Like overlaying a 8% opacity layer of yellow on a digital piece to give the impression of late afternoon. Nothing explicit. Nothing relevant to the plot. Just a bit of seasoning.

From a meta-watsonian perspective, a lot of how I write fic was influenced by the old Kids WB bumps where the voice actors would play their characters *as though they were actors hanging out on the warner studios lot* Batman was still Batman, but he was also a guy playing Batman on TV. Yugi moto still had the cosmic powers of the millennium puzzle but also complained about how much time he had to spend in hair and makeup. So when you see a character from another series in my fic, they're an alternate universe version of themselves that is Not Relevant To The Plot, and on another level they're like an actor famous on another show, coming in to do a bit part on their friend's show for funsies.

...but mostly I do it so I don't have to make up names for OCs I'm only using for four seconds.

To actually answer your question: Yuzu is a HUGE fan of this educational YouTube channel run by Marine Biologist Jotaro Kujo. He's the only guy who gives echinoderms their due. She shows Ukitake and Unohana and they like him a lot too. “Yes, I really mean it,” you smiled, kissing his cheek. If it was possible for his face to turn redder than a tomato, then today was the day. But he wasn’t embarrassed, no, he was excited. Excited that his slip of the tongue worked out better than expected. 

“So… wanna go on a date?” Sendou asked, chuckling at your confused expression.

“Already? You don’t wanna plan something for next time we go out?” You asked, as he gently pulled you into his side to walk with him. This was a lot; from the confession, to the sudden date, but yet it felt right somehow.

“We can just go to our favorite restaurant! It’ll be even more special now that it's more than a hangout today,” he said, winking at you. This made you raise an eyebrow at him in question, but there was no way you could resist him. He was known for his charm after all.

“Alright then, Shuto. I guess this can be our first date. Hopefully your charms can impress me this time,” you said, shaking your head as you walked down the familiar path.

And to think that he already blushed enough times today. The way his name sounded from your lips? Sendou could definitely get used to this.

What are your favourite headcanons about Even and Ansem the Wise? (About themselves and about them as a pair)

Ohhh I know I'm gonna forget something, but I'll try to list a few (gonna start typing without thinking & see where that lands me ehehe) All these are gonna be Headcanon, but if I slip in something I know Is Canon I'll try to like, asterisk it to highlight (I may forget to do this. just know most of what I'm saying is from the brain and not canon)

AtW got his position through family/born into it; he didn't really want the Power behind it (and preferred science, not politics) but knew he needed to step up and be the King that Radiant Garden required, especially after the passing of the previous. I feel it happened fairly young (if AtW is high 50s, 60s, I'd imagine it happened low 30s), so he had to learn to balance hobby (science, exploration, etc) and work (politics) really quickly.

He was kind of a soft-handed king. Not known as being strict, and wanted to mingle with his people and be more hands-on. Before he had his crown, I like to imagine he was always down shoulder to shoulder with the people. He's an engineer at heart, always wanting to build and expand and see what limits man can breach. He'd absolutely want to be down with the masses with the blueprints and battle plans to expand the castle town!!

I like to imagine Even wasn't originally from the Castle town, but from a city just outside it beyond the woods and etc we see surrounding RG. When Ansem was first taking over and looking for a staff refresh, I imagine he scouted Even out who would've had a Reputation both for his attitude and his brain/studies. They didn't get along at first with Ansem's calm vs Even's tightly wired. Eventually, Ansem figured out how to really 'use' Even to his full potential and let him stretch his brain, and they got along Much better (to a degree. I imagine their first meeting happened in AtW's high 30s/40s, just to keep a 'timeline' going here).

While they were trying to figure out like... Ansem's Security System (guards), the idea that everyone Inside the castle should also have some kind of defensive ability to them, may that be Magic or Physical (in Ansem's early curiosities, I imagine he either directly encountered a keyblade wielder or at least learned of them. This of course being Before he gets the chance to meet Mickey.) So anyone in the labs were trained in very, very basic combat.

Even rocked shop at 'very basic combat' in a way that had the current captain of the guard go "oh damn, can we have him instead--". Ansem called dibs and pulled rank (absolutely childishly sticking his tongue out at Lyna) to keep Even on the lab team. <- (I'm kind of shaky on this part exactly; I just know I headcanon Even as 'was good enough for the guard, but he got YOINKED to the lab team)

Because of his performance during the combat drills, despite Even's own "I'm not a warrior," grumblings, he gets a guard military dress uniform when Big Events come around. Ansem thinks it's a little cute how much the (20s, bitey, tugging at his collar and grumbling) lead scientist hates it. (--wait did he just think 'cute'? oh that's going to be a problem for the future. oh well.)

A Decade and a handful of years pass, the others crop up along the way (Dilan first, and then Aeleus). AtW & Even are not "A thing", but have an obvious push and pull dynamic of an old married couple despite doing no more than Ansem having grabbed Even's wrist to inspect for burns when a machine sparked at his fingertips. There is. Something, there, but neither man will go for it. Even is too busy with his labs, Ansem too busy with everything.

He leaves and returns with a boy. Even nearly blows a gasket when Ansem smiles oh-so-charmingly at him in a way he cannot (has never been able to) deny and announces the lost child as his ward, for the time being. Even wants to claw at the walls because (not)respectively, my lord, what the Fuck. (he immediately finds himself caring for the boy, despite his fussing, just like Ansem knew he would. He trusts Even so much it worries him. Ienzo stares up at them with his blank, emotionless face. Pours through every book and manual and report well above his age bracket and barely part of Ansem's own, and something in Ansem's heart wrenches. His thirst for knowledge reminds him so much of Even's own and it scares him.)

They all die. when Ansem fully learns of what happens, while he no longer has regrets for what happened, he does wish he would've been there to die alongside of them, sometimes. But it's his fault that all this happened in the first place, isn't it? It's only suiting for a pitiful father King to suffer everything being ripped from him. If only he was stricter. (While he's a man with so many regrets, while he's learned to keep going to try to amend them, there are some things he can't stop thinking about. Ienzo is a grown man, now. When he watches as Even and Ienzo bicker over a monitor while Kairi sleeps off and on, there's an ache for all the things he missed. [But what to miss? It's not like they were truly a family; Ienzo is just his ward, and he and Even were never--])

OK other things that dont' fit in whatever that checklist of points became LMAO OOPS,,,

Ansem:

As much as I'd love if he himself was ever allowed to travel worlds while younger, I feel it'd be a disservice to how much he's done while grounded in RG if he ever did. Instead I like to imagine he has a well known 'open door' policy for travelers; anyone who CAN enter his world, he wants to meet them. He wants to learn from them. He's so hungry for knowledge that he'll grab any "trying to be secretive" world hopper and drag them down for tea to needle for information until he can try to worm SOMETHING out of it. Even if they never cave, he'll feel like he learned something just by how much spark was in the traveler's eyes.

Doesn't have the best diet in the world. He's got a severe sweet tooth, and tends to lose himself in the labs and his library for hours on end. If someone from the guardstaff didn't chase him down with a sandwich and tea, he'd probably go a full day without eating anything beyond ice cream. Before the Fall, it was bad. After the Fall, it's worse; he went so many years without needing to eat, or drink, and just existing in the world between that he forgets food is a thing that needs to be eaten. He's frighteningly thin from his time as DiZ. Aeleus has been trying to figure out how to slip more protein into his food since recompletion and reunion.

Mickey brings him little treats from the outside worlds any time he visits. Ansem loves that mouse so much, he'll clear his entire schedule when he arrives just to have the time to sit down with an old friend and chat.

While he's a Scientist, yes, he leans more heavily into Engineering. He's incredibly good with tech* and even reprogrammed Tron to work for him. He built/helped build/got the build going and I assume the planning for that entire basement lab hellscape For Ienzo. He and Cid will get along so, so well when they get to interact.

Even:

Has always run a little cold, even before any magic reached his body. Like the joke that all nurses have cold hands, he was ice.

He has the shoulders and biceps of a linebacker for a reason, even as a scientist. Ansem's machines are so heavy, they couldn't always call Aeleus or Dilan down from their post to come lift something to Even took it upon himself. He was already decent at combat, the muscle was there. He just built it a little better so he wouldn't have to rely on anyone for his work. (as he gets older, he calls for one of the larger men because he is Not throwing out his back for a single machine.)

He was not unaware of any lingering... Feelings between him and AtW before the fall. He's married to his work, but not stupid. You don't do all this work on Hearts without understanding the ins and outs of them and being able to clock the emotions in those around you. Especially His Own. There was just no time for it, so he shoved them down and to the side to deal with never. He was always so close to a breakthrough, he couldn't waste his precious time with fraternizing. No matter how much he wished to linger there, in the softer moments, when it was just him and Ansem in the labs surrounded by the soft hum of machines.

I like to imagine all the Org, reformed, maintained the whisper of their old magic. Even doesn't fully find reason for it, or the hollow ache and need for it like Some of them, but he can feel it in his fingertips sometimes. The shield and sword come to him like second nature thanks to his Guard training he took, once. The ice he once summoned so naturally for years sits like an itch under his skin, only crackling to the surface as frost at high emotion. He hopes the others dont catch him shaking his wrist out and hiding his hand behind his back until the frost melts. (They catch it. They have no room to speak as the walls shift, the wind picks up, and the ground quakes.)

Absolutely never considered himself a 'father'. He doesn't hate the term, but it sits uncomfortable in his heart. (Joke's on him, he has the most children out of all of them. Ansem would love to tease him on it, but he's still trying to judge the acceptance level of such a joke.)

Despite All That

i like to imagine everyone still assumes them a couple. If asked, Dilan will handwave it ('of course they are a thing, in their own way. He doesn't care about the fraternizing of his peers. Why are you asking him?'). Aeleus will clench his jaw like he knows it's not his place to gossip, and he cares too deeply for Ansem (like a mentor figure, like a teacher. The man saw him with all his bulk and muscle and still gently taught him the sciences and let him flex his brain to become a treasured pupil.) to disturb that trust with such a thing. Ienzo will wrinkle his nose and laugh it off. Do not make him even think about things like that. (Part of him knows. Understands. They are both categorized as his Fathers in his mind, even if he refuses to allow himself to call Ansem that out loud.) Braig (Luxu, taken over) saw the weak point and exploited it. Whispered to Xehanort where to hit and how to twist the dynamic to work best for their goals.

[ I also like to pretend they made out once in the younger years, tipsy from drinks at a party, not thinking straight. both men remember it, both are pretending it didn't happen. Life carried on like normal after it. Ansem brings it up like an execution shot after recompletion, when things finally resettle. "Have you ever wondered, dear--" speaking of things that could have been if they weren't so foolish. Even is so tired after everything, he doesn't even pretend to be angry about the topic. Cons: Depending on the Evol extracted, it has a chance to destroy the evolver's body if the ability was kept for too long or if the Evolver extracts more than their body could handle. The other party whom the Evolver will extract from may also be affected depending on how much was taken

Harry/Ginny

AH HINNY!

oh man, i oscillate between really liking hinny one day and feeling completely indifferent towards them the next.

hinny might be the relationship i like the most for harry, and it's all because because of the family aspect. through marriage w ginny, harry officially became a weasley family member. and, of course he always was one, but he actually is a weasley on paper and i think having that in writing would mean a lot to harry. and my golden trio heart can't not mention that by hinny being married - ron and hermione are literally harry's brother and sister (in-law) now and !!!!! that just makes my heart melt (i know those two were always harry's family but bc of the aforementioned reason, etc. you get it)

so right off the bat, when i try to organize my more positive thoughts on hinny, i'm mostly focused on how the relationship best serves harry, and only harry. and this is where my frustrations with the ship begins: it's so hard to think the other way around because ginny's narrative purpose is just to be harry's ideal love interest, instead of being a fully fleshed character. i really love ginny with all her spunk and feistiness, but she's so underutilized. she had a cute crush on him in the start of the series which was adorable, but her character was inarguably just "ron's younger sister". and after she gets possessed by volde/gets saved from the CoS by harry, she still continues to have a puppy-love crush on harry until OoTP!!! GAAHHHH!!! Apparently joanne said hinny were always meant to be soulmates and i think if these two had a consistent "invisible string" motif throughout the series, it would've been so good (and almost as good as romione's slow burn). So...

here's how i'd fix hinny (lmao):

i wouldve made the ginny a much more prominent character in PoA and beyond.

we get to see hinny actually have heart-to-hearts about the incidents of CoS - for ginny to play such an IMPORTANT role in the titular plotline of the second book, then to just have her blend into the background afterwards just boggles my mind - that was the perfect oppurtunity to make ginny an invaluable character in the cast. she has this huge experience in common with harry - being personally victimized by voldemort - that harry doesn't have w ron or hermione at that point and it would've been so nice to see harry find an equal, a confidant in ginny from then on - like, dont let the readers forget that harry and ginny have this huge thing in common, have it be with us in the back of our heads the whole time!

the potential of ginny being a maybe date for harry to the yule ball, harry feeling jealousy towards neville for getting to dance and spend time w ginny and harry being like "wait a minute! i'm supposed to crush on cho! im jealous of neville??" that wouldve been FUN - again, they couldve been a less insane version of romione hello

having the hinny subplot unravel in tandem with harry's crush and relationship with Cho in ootp

in ootp, you can argue that the story attempts to make a foil between cho and ginny's characters but if that were the case, it could've done a way better job of it

with harry's relationship w cho - harry likes her bc she's cool and pretty but she wants to connect with him through their connection via cedric and his death, which is off the bat a hugely touchy/traumatic topic for both of them and cho couldn't possibly fathom what it's like to be in the presence of voldemort/tom but guess which other character does ehehe...

now we're at hbp and this is where the good stuff starts bc if i'd had it my way, we'd have gotten their friendship in poa and two books of solid romantic build-up up until now

i honestly had a such a fun time with hinny in hbp, ginny in her OWL year being so cool and harry's hugeass crush on her- harry being a hormonal teenager was hilarious to read like its implied that harry is having increasingly inappropriate thoughts about her throughout the novel and theyre just intercut with "BUT RON-" that's some good shit

my one gripe w hbp's hinny is that i wish we actually got to see their dates sneaking around hogwarts, finding the perfect hideaways for makeout sessions, etc etc i know hp wasn't a romance fantasy by any means but imagine how swoony it wouldve been if we got to actually see these sunset dates instead of just being told about them - it wouldve been cathartic to actually see harry actually live the life of a normal teen boy before everything fell apart lol

if we got all these invisible string moments between them throughout the series, harry thinking about ginny and how good it felt to kiss her lips before he walks to his death in DH would've felt so much more earned

from a storytelling perspective, the case with hinny begs the question of if you can have a love interest for the jesus figure of your narrative? can you make a believable, grounded and balanced love story for the chosen one? i honestly think so but then you'd have to put equal amounts of effort and work into creating two nuanced characters and unfortunately we don't see that effort be put in ginny's character and that's why harry's endgame falls short for so many people. earlier, i said that this is the ship i like most for harry, but honestly that isn't saying a lot - i think with an almost saint-like character like harry, its hard to imagine a satisfying love and partnership for this kid. i like tomarry as a ship for when im feeling a bit insane but other than that, my main harry ship is him with a lifetime of peace and healing.

i also want to argue that hinny was never meant to be a primary romance in this story - the main romance/love story in the series is ron and hermione's and i think joanne's romance prowess all went into romione and i'm so thankful for that because i think it makes for better story (also i'm totally biased)

i also cant not mention the freudianess of it all with hinny, right? like god freud would Love hinny bc what do you mean they look identical to jily, what is going on here. that and the fact they had their first kid at 22/23 years old like my god, WHAT ARE YOU TWO DOING you should be at the club!!!!! i do dig the failmarriage vibes they were serving in TCC, also.
