Worlds #1 complainer about "dog motif" fans accidentally makes story with extremely central, predominant even, dog motif
#I wasn't thinking of it that way because it's like. For lack of a more appropriate word diagetic?#Like it's not invoked symbolically in the narrative or just with association it like. Involves actual dogs and the in-universe culture's#view on dogs. Rather than dog imagery to represent like Loyalty or Devotion or etc#The biggest underlying theme is kind of the human/animal relationship and animals as means of externalizing human states#cultural desires and fears etc etc etc#And in-universe dogs have a very complicated place in this cultural context where they tread the thinnest of lines between#being noble loyal valuable animals and unclean lowly despised scavengers. Both are the same animal and it all depends on the#role they play. And then this divide is narrowing in the context of a famine where the dog becomes competition#for food/consumer of the dead/possible desperation food source itself and one that contaminates the consumer in the process#Street dogs as kind of the ultimate representation of cultural anxieties of enemies infiltrating from within and without#despised elements of the culture that are omnipresent nonetheless etc etc etc etc#And then a cast of main characters where ALL of them in very different capacities are balancing a delicate line of trying their#best to play roles to remain in the 'valued' category and not fall into the 'despised'. Some doing better than others or having#more privileged places in this dynamic than others but all under tremendous strain from it#In a condensed high pressure panopticon setting of a pilgrimage/war party surrounded by like some of the highest#members of the social elite/literal royalty/etc#And anyway bottom line EXTREMELY central 'dog motif' going on here literally every main character interacts with a#'dog motif' in some capacity . getting a little maybe irritated at how often i see autistic will being refuted because he "made himself out to be that way to avoid attention" ... ??? that's autistic. going out of his way to make yourself appear weird and unsociable so you can avoid socializing is. extremely autistic. lying and exaggerating about yourself out of fear of people getting too close and realizing youre a bad person is extremely autistic. the show honestly backpedals on will's empathy half the time, acting like it is only applicable when it comes to his job, but frequently showing that it isn't. in the first episode, hannibal literally notices his face getting red because they're near two people who are arguing. he's not exaggerating or faking his nightmares, his inability to deattach himself from others. yeah, he's got a complicated psychological profile that autism doesn't entirely cover or explain. that doesn't mean he's not still autistic. his person suit, the person he presents himself as to others, the choice to do that autistic masking. even if part of his masking is hiding behind being autistic in hopes it will make him less favorable to others and not further inspected, that is autistic masking. i think it is so insanely annoying that just because a character wasn't written with the intent in mind doesnt mean you cant accidentally write a valid representation of something anyways. fuller didn't intend on hannigram becoming as romantic as it did, but understood that it came along with the subtext anyways. acting like hes completely above fitting criteria of mental illness because he's "fictional" and has a "fictional" disorder that HIGHLY exemplifies autism is. incredibly stupid. and boring

Listening to The Horse and I was not expecting Is Here to be so serene after Remembers and Is Close... Really wonderful album, thank you for posting about it.
The Horse Is Here now. It's alive and in a moment of peace as just itself. I like that finale because the album is Very focused on the exploitation angle for the most part but the human element (via orchestral score) isn't absent from that moment of serenity for The Horse. There's some level of shared experience between the two animals, the horse as it exists today was shaped in interaction with humans and the total arc of human history (for better and worse) would not have happened without the horse. You can't paint the full picture without both.
I'm really happy the post got Some reblogs and got people listening to it because it's such an important album to me. I'm almost guaranteed to cry at least once on a full listen, and I don't cry easily so that's a pretty big deal lol.
#The album is grappling with some scattered things conceptually but I think it comes together in this really interesting narrative#where the 'human history of music' angle is a parallel to the relationship with a domesticated animal#I also think I project some of my own stuff on it because iirc the composer's angle (while not outright anti-captivity afaik) is focused#almost entirely on the exploitation. Reflected musically by squeezing everything he possibly could out of The Horse. Getting sound samples#from the body and paraphernalia and etc. And I think that angle is definitely critical especially for an animal that's been used#so uniquely in warfare and to run into artillery fire and etc but I Receive a more holistic narrative out of it.#Like I like The Rider (Not The Horse) because it's definitely a moment of transcendence for the human (not the horse) but#I don't see that all that cynically. I think there Can be a lot of beauty in how much we see in other animals that they obviously#do not experience themselves because they're not concerned with Such Things.#(Though tbf it being followed by The Truck arguably places that moment in a more squarely exploitative context)#Getting to ride a horse at full gallop (something I was Very Mad I wasn't allowed to do during my like 2 trail riding experiences as a kid)#and after getting over how bumpy that shit was feeling so excited about how I was Not Falling Off and just absolute joy about how#fast this thing was moving and how strong this huge fucking animal is and how cool it is that people have been doing this for centuries.#It's so much different than just Going Fast in a car because it's an interaction between two sentient beings and you're being lent#the abilities of an animal other than yourself and getting just a tiny taste of being something other than human.#Just completely exhilarating. The horse is not experiencing All This of course but according to her handler she showed clear signs#of being in a very good mood and was notably perked up once she got to start running full tilt.#(And sure we could not know For Sure that this was actually the case but horses are very expressive and this person was very#experienced with horses and this animal in particular so I think it's safe to take her word for it)#Our emotions are felt differently than other animals because we have such complex subjective experiences informed by language#and culture and identity and at least the raw psychological impulses towards spirituality (whether you actually have spiritual#beliefs or not) but like there's underlying things that are the same. In that moment both animals involved in the interaction were#what we call Happy. Big moment for the rider and small moment for the horse but both are experiencing an overlapping Thing.#This isn't Always the case. The moment of transcendence for The Rider could be boredom or pain for The Horse but the overlap can#and does happen.#Yeah Matthew Herbert is representing the notion of extracting as much as possible out of The Horse in his audio sampling but his#actions themselves aren't that exploitative extraction. He's using the remains of an already dead animal to make music as we have#for millennia and assembling all these resources to honor this animal and make really beautiful art about it.#Anyway that's a long winded way of describing what I experience in this album. Kind of the full spectrum of the human/domestic animal#relationship which spans horrific exploitation and mutual necessity and veneration and love and being Two Animals On Earth

saw a comment on a livejournal bh meta post from 2013 that sent me on an internal hero's journey about sexual misconduct and gendered power in being human
#'what's the point of patsy' fair question. she's kind of a one note somewhat uncomfortable comic relief character that dies after 2 episodes#but to give her a fair shake#I think she's the only example of a female character being directly sexually predatory to a man that we have on the show#and she's targeting a known lady killer who is (for the time being) occupying a subordinate position to her#I think it's important that she's clearly the one in the wrong there but alex still gets upset at *hal* for potentially endangering her#by existing in the world and thereby allowing her to feel attracted to him#you can sympathize with why she's saying that but it still feels skeevy#I also think that situation has some parallels with hal and natasha's deal#weird sexualized interactions between employee and manager that Should Not be happening. mixed signifiers of power.#women initiating interactions with hal and him going along with it because he wants/needs a specific thing from them#tom being indirectly involved and impacted by the results of these relationships#patsy asking hal for a massage -> hal taking blood from natasha#there's Stuff here#marina marvels at life#being human#edit: forgor about yvonne almost blackwidowing tom so patsy isn't the Only example but I think the rest of my points stand

And he had nothing to gain from it apart from the pride of saying “look at how strong he is”#(Hiei had already paid for the operation when he accepted not to tell Yukina the truth so the rest was free from what we know)#and anyway if that's not unconscious father-like behavior on Shigure's part I don't know what is then#on the other hand I'm ready to bet Hiei was starved for affection and when Shigure offered him some he immediately jumped on it#look I have FEELINGS for this okay?

#did indie animation wake up and choose angst#not complaining it’s yummy but#I wasn’t expecting angst fromSPOOKY MONTH?????#and the priest character is actually really cool like a lot of media portrays priests as villains and im glad they didn’t do that here#these past few days in indie animation have been actually insane#yesterday was the lackadaisy anniversary and the release of murder drones 7 which was a ROLLERCOASTER#and then the day after that spooky month releases with DEPRESSION#indie animation is so good it’s not even funny#I hope more people become aware of indie shows so they become the new standard#like I dont want all of these plain movies/series we have been seeing from these major productions (with some exceptions ofc)#and with indie animation rising I hope it dis encourages AI use in creative media#because AI can’t make something with such a detailed and in depth plot as humans can#I mean it could eventually(?) but if you have ever interacted with AI you may notice many flaws#this has turned into an essay it’s not even tags anymore but im just psyched for indie animation#murder drones#spooky month#lackadaisy#indie animation#kind of a rant

#Goddess of the River#vaishnavi patel#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#I thought this was pretty good!#I enjoyed her as a character and the aspects of motherhood and how how it explored her being a goddess of purification/forgiveness#in how she interacted with all the humans on various sides of conflicts#but it does focus a lot on the politics and war especially in the second half which I wasn’t as interested in#(though I realise that’s the central story that’s being retold)#again I don’t really have any knowledge of the original so am just sort of taking this book as it is#if you read kaikeyi for aroaceness and were wondering about this one - you could read her as such too#though more in a she’s a river god and that’s a human thing kind of way#she has to sleep with the husband as part of her curse and mentions that it’s something she doesn’t care about; that’s it#it is also a plot point where her son has a vow of celibacy (marriage included) and she’s like#no how could he curse himself to a life of loneliness!!! which felt a little odd or at least unexamined to me#no romance#(some side character marriages/relationships are part of the plot at various points though)
