I don't generally allow anonymous asks, but I'll make an exception this time.

As a bit of context, the reason I keep anonymous asks turned off most of the time is because the very first one I got in my inbox was someone rambling about how they wanted to take a relatively popular GL-focused post I'd made and make it all about the Batfam, with some Guy Gardner hate thrown in. So believe me when I say I understand and empathize completely with OP's request to leave their name out so that they don't catch any strays from Batfans.

For all that I shout angrily at the clouds about the Batfandom, I don't actually believe that every single one of them is the kind of asshole who makes posts that disrespect the rest of DC to glaze the Batfam and gleefully mocks anyone who gets annoyed by the blatant mischaracterization. Every fandom has its toxic members (and I know for a fact that this is true for the Green Lanterns as well because they're why I quit Reddit)

But it is very much more apparent with the Batfandom because, well...

And that's just the main Batman tag. Just from a sheer numbers point of view, even if only 1% of those followers are the annoying kind, that's still around 18,000 people.

As for why there's so many of them? It's simple. Batman is DC's favorite child. The history of how that developed is not something I feel like unpacking today, but when the Dark Knight and his family are the characters who are being pushed most by the company, it naturally follows that they have the biggest following online.

Which is why my answer to the question about whether I think it's the Bats' wealth or the potential for self-insert that makes them especially appealing is that I don't believe it's either of those things. Batman isn't the only billionaire hero with no powers and a big family of allies (Green Arrow says hi), and if you look at any DC character's tag on Tumblr, you'll find all sorts of headcanons that are clearly based on the author inserting themselves into said character.

Rather, I think that the Batfamily's popularity makes them the natural entry point for the rest of DC Comics. OP themselves says they got into DC through Red Hood, and that is pretty typical for many people I've talked to. Their first introduction might be through the Wayne Family Adventures webtoon, or the Battinson movie. They look up their new blorbos on AO3/TikTok/Tumblr and find that a lot of people also are fans of these characters. Through this community, they learn that DC has even more characters beyond the Batfam, each with decades of rich history.

For some people, this is where they discover other DC fandoms like the Flash or Young Justice '98. Others delve deeper into the Batfandom by seeking out the original source material to learn more about their favorite characters.

But for some people, the entry point is where their exploration ends. They're content to enjoy themselves in the shallow end of the proverbial pool where the Batfamily are the only important characters and the fanon and memes have little to no connection with the comics, shows, or any other media.

And to be perfectly honest, I don't find anything inherently wrong with that. In some ways, it's not far off from my own approach to Green Lantern fandom- hence why I've kept the name "incorrect-green-lantern-quotes" even after branching out to other stuff like writing AUs and headcanons. The problem lies in refusing to acknowledge any other approach to fandom besides your own- in dismissing people who are offended by your jokes as "taking silly comics too seriously" or "gatekeeping" and making them into the bad guys for asking that you not shove the disrespect of their characters in their faces. But I digress.

Yeah, the Batfandom is big. Like, orders of magnitude larger than some of the other DC fandoms. So it's just simple statistics that you're more likely to run into their toxic stans than any other DC hero's.

What’s the problem with endo systems? I am not a system and don’t know much about this but I vaguely know what endo systems are, I just don’t know why they’re bad/wrong /genq

hello anon!

i would like to start this by saying that none of this is to invalidate anybody's experiences, but to point out that while your experiences are valid, that does not make them right. i can have a trigger of spoons but i cannot force everyone in the globe to stop using spoons for my benefit. self diagnosis is valid when you put in the proper research, so i'd suggest looking into things before you start labeling yourself with them. i say this because that is what i find a majority of endo systems do, for reasons i will explain below along with the sources provided. i do not think they are inherently bad people, i just think they are misinformed people that are doing a bad thing. that does not make them morally corrupt or mean that they are doing anything on purpose, no matter my feelings on the topic.

that said, i'll begin. i have sources listed at the end of this post for you to look into it further if you'd like.

endo systems are people that claim to be systems without trauma. that's medically not even possible, since the way alters are formed in the first place is the trauma that happens before the identity can fully integrate.

i'll break it down, and i will include some sources at the end if you'd like to look into it further.

when you are a child, your identity is not fully formed. it's not very clear exactly when the identity fully forms, but the general consensus is that is usually happens by the ages of 6-10.

before those ages, your identity is categorized into neat little parts. there's a part that focuses on anger, a part that focuses on sadness, a part that focuses on confusion, etc.

for a non-system, as their child brain ages, it learns things and absorbs them like a sponge. the child is in a safe-enough environment to retain memories of things happening around them. this provides an environment for the 'parts' of the identity to integrate into each other and form one full identity.

this is why you see those memes where people joke about randomly coming into consciousness at a random point in their childhood. that's your identity integrating.

for systems, their parts could not integrate. they stayed as separate parts. why? because their environment was not safe enough. their brains were witness to repeated trauma that affected them so heavily that the brain essentially said, "I cannot function like a normal person if I were to remember any of this, I have to protect myself," and stopped the identity from integrating.

a quote from the first source listed below, "Instead of integrating into a core personality, people with DID experience prolonged trauma in early childhood which causes the original different "behavioral states" present from birth to become parts of the personality that are increasingly dissociated (disconnected) from each other, which prevents them from integrating to form a core personality. Over time, the early dissociated behavioral states, influenced by the trauma, develop into dissociative identities (also known as dissociative personality states,distinct personality states, alternate identities or alters). It is generally accepted that developing multiple identities protects the child psychologically by keeping trauma memories and emotions contained with specific identities, rather than overwhelming the child completely."

so when endogenic "systems" come along to say that they are systems without ever having experienced trauma, that is factually and medically incorrect.

and before anyone brings up systems that don't remember their trauma, i'd like to point out that not remembering your trauma as a system is the entire point of your brain forming alters. that does not make you endogenic. as well as that, saying "I just go by the term endogenic because I don't remember my trauma" is also contradictory to the endogenic term, because you're admitting that you do have trauma.

living as a system is very difficult. you cannot "become" a system just because you want to. you cannot "become" a system just as a symptom of neurodivergence. it's a trauma response. it's like when people say "omg, i'm so ocd" just because they're a perfectionist. that's also why many systems say that endos are ableist.

i understand that a lot of singlets want to accept endos because there's so many moral dilemmas in the modern age. i implore you to do your own research. no, that does not mean scroll the tumblr syscourse tag and observe fights between systems and endos. no, that does not mean send asks to endos or people who dislike them, including me. that means do your own research. look into the dsm-v. look into medical records. ensure your sources are unbiased. this is not me hammering the anon for sending me an ask, consider this a small nudge in a different direction.

a lot of this is me heavily summarising to make things easier to understand, but you can check these sources if you want to look into it deeper. i highly suggest that you do, even if you're not a system.

I have gone down a rabbit hole of comparing the source skelliebois to the other sanses and now I want to know if Necros and error could bond over sewing and knitting stuff maybe Necros making some fashionable puppets as a peace offering idk

Canon Error probably not, as he's generally a man-baby who throws tantrums and hates other outcodes XD Fanon Error maybe? People have gone wild on actually developing his character and giving him some semblance of thought/emotion and rationality.

I've always wanted to get around to drawing little scenarios one day, like mini 1-4 panel comics of like incorrect quotes or scenarios with other people's characters. Been thinking about reworking my weekly posting schedule again so I can allocate more time for additional projects, but we'll see.

Alex Van Halen hopes that those coming to his new memoir, Brothers, for a tell-all will be disappointed.

“It’s not about the dirt,” Van Halen, older brother and bandmate of the late Eddie Van Halen, tells Billboard. “If I start throwing dirt, it’ll never end. I think some people would like that; that’s how projects are sold nowadays. I think it divides the audience, and we’re not here to divide. I think the tone of the book and how I want the book to be perceived is more on a spiritual and creative level. That’s why there’s very little, or any, dirt in there.”

“The majority of things that were written about Ed were third party,” he continues. “They weren’t really there. I’m not degrading any of it, but it’s not accurate. I really felt like a lot of the stuff that was out there was incorrect, and it didn’t do justice to the more sensitive side of Ed. So before I die I would like to at least partially set the record straight.”

Brothers, publishing Oct. 22 and written with New Yorker staff writer Ariel Levy, acknowledges the sex and drugs and rock n’ roll. But as the title indicates it’s primarily a chronicle of the drummer’s relationship with his guitar hero brother, who passed way during Oct. 2020 at the age of 65 after a long battle with cancer. The tome is undeniably emotional, with some passages written directly to his late brother. Van Halen acknowledges that the process “really took its toll on me.”

“You have to remember we were together for 65 years; that’s a lifetime, if not more,” explains Van Halen, who was born in Amsterdam and came to the United States with his family in 1962, eventually settling in Pasadena, Calif., where the Van Halen band was formed in 1974. “(Brothers) not only forced me to look at everything Ed and I had done in our lifetime, but also — and I should thank Ed for this — it forced me to look at me. What are my motivations? Why am I really doing this? Who does anybody do this? It took me a lot of places…very heavy.”

Throughout Brothers’ 231 pages, Van Halen discloses the tight bond between him and Eddie, personally and musically — and presents the connection between those two as one and the same thing. Van Halen offers a detailed account of the entire family dynamics, too, from the influence of their father, Jan, a jazz musician, and their more strict Dutch East Indies-born mother Eugenia, and the impact of immigrating to America and being treated as outsiders. The passion for music came early and was a constant, of course, and one can read in Brothers a kind of mission on Van Halen’s part to offer a more expansive and sophisticated view of his brother’s talents.

“There was more going on than most people recognize or realize, and it’s not our job to ‘teach’ people,” explains Van Halen, who also makes use in the book of a variety of other sources, including published interviews with his brother, books by original frontman David Lee Roth and producer Ted Templeman, and philosophers such as Friedrich Nietzsche. The brothers, who first learned to play piano, actually started out on each other’s instruments before switching as teenagers. “When Ed picked (the guitar) up he could make it sing. It was amazing. That sound, that intonation was phenomenal. You couldn’t express it in words. Everybody gets blinded by the fact Ed was such a phenomenal player (that) you’re not even understanding who the human being was. Maybe people don’t care, but I care. He’s my brother.”

BROTHERS OF A BAND

Writing about Van Halen the rock band in Brothers, Van Halen says that “me, Ed and Dave were very subversive in the way we looked at music and the political system and the way we looked at people in general…The band was dysfunctional. It was completely running on three wheels, if you will. I think Ed was quoted as saying ‘but we always played well,’ and that was ultimately what kept it together until it was no longer together. It was a very sad moment when that whole thing fell apart.” Van Halen, in fact, writes in Brothers that Van Halen’s 1985 split with Roth “was the most disappointing thing I’d experienced in my life, the thing that seemed the most wasteful and unjust. Until I lost my brother.”

Despite the acknowledged rancor with Roth over the years – and blaming Roth for the failure of a planned Eddie Van Halen tribute tour — Van Halen maintains that “I’m not angry at all with Dave. He was one of the three main components of the band. At the time we didn’t recognize it because we were constantly battling things out. That’s why I mentioned (in the book) that the first person I called when Ed died was Dave because I felt like I owed him that, to the work we had done together and the fact that our families knew each other and the fact that everybody was sort of on the same level, if you will, when we first started. I don’t know where things went wrong…I have nothing but the utmost respect for Dave and his work ethic. I just think some of his choices were really strange to me, but that’s not my job to figure it out.”

Other than his brother’s death, Van Halen chose to stop the story with the Roth split, leaving out subsequent runs with Sammy Hagar and Gary Cherone and even the reunion with Roth that started in 2007. (Roth and Hagar both wrote memoirs after their respective tenures with the band.) Van Halen cites “limitations to how big the book could be” but also says it the scope of the narrative made sense to him.

“What happened after Dave left is not the same band,” Van Halen explains. “I’m not saying it was better or worse or any of that. The fact is Ed and I did our best work whenever we played. We always gave it our best shot. But the magic was in the first years, when we didn’t know what we were doing, when we were willing to try anything.” Not surprisingly, Van Halen was not responsive, either, when Hagar and bassist Michael Anthony reached out about him taking part in some way in their Best of All Worlds tour celebrating Van Halen.

“I’m not interested,” he says. “They’re not doing the band justice. They can do what they want to do. That’s not my business.”

EVERYBODY WANTS SOME

Van Halen does add, however, that his auction of drum equipment and other items in June “was misinterpreted” and simply clearing out a warehouse of gear that wasn’t being used.

“I’m not quitting. I don’t know where that came from,” Van Halen says. “I’ll die with sticks in my hand.” Spinal issues he’s been battling for decades are still present, he adds, including a recent injury during a trip to a shooting range in 2022. “But with modern technology we have now I should be OK in about five years,” he says.

Despite rumors of what the Van Halens were up to between the last tour with Roth (in 2015) and Eddie’s death, Alex maintains there was little to report. “We never really talked about it,” he says. “We prefer that things just happen by some kind of magic. The issue was Ed had been dealing with cancer for quite a number of years, and some of the stuff that he was doing out of the normal procedures, if you will, had side effects. Some of the stuff that was being said about Ed was completely wrong, and it was painful…. He was fighting cancer. It’s as simple as that.”

Fans are certainly excited about the presence of a new instrumental track, “Unfinished,” that’s part of the audio version of Brothers. It hails from a trove of ideas the brothers recorded at Eddie’s 5150 studio and stashed away, and Alex anticipates releasing more of that material “when it feels right.”

“I’m not in a hurry,” he says. “I do have a certain obligation to keep it to Ed’s standards. He was meticulous and he was a pain in the ass…and I need to have access to the right takes, ’cause not every day did we play at our best. But we always had the tape recorders running. We didn’t go in the studio like, ‘Yeah, we’re gonna make a record from beginning to end.’ We had little pieces here, little pieces there, you put ’em away until the time comes and you go, ‘Hey, I think I like that piece…’ and then go back to it and build something from there.” He told Rolling Stone that he’s approached OpenAI about using its technology to help turn some of the material into songs.

“I know people want to hear it,” Van Halen adds, before cautioning that, “the other side of the coin is this doesn’t sound like Van Halen. One thing Van Halen will make clear, however, is that his brother is still a strong presence in his life.

Hey, I'm kind of confused about your last anon. This isn't so much about Shiguang, and more about your statement on queer media in China. How can link click or any content be gay baiting if same-sex relationships are not allowed to be shown on the show due to censorship in China?

Per dictionary.com, queerbaiting is implying non-heterosexual attraction between 2 characters to generate interest in the show (in this case) without actually showing the relationship turning into anything more than that. If censorship doesn't allow the latter part in the country that the show was made for, then how can we say that this is queerbaiting? I can't find the source, but your previous anon mentions the lh0, show's creator, rejecting that Shiguang written to be queer (I don't remember this exact quote but I do remember him saying stuff about their friendship in past interviews so I am asuming the quote is true). I am not blaming the fandom for anything, I have been part of it for a long time, but the only way (that I can think of) people could be queerbaited into watching the show is through reading, listening to, or looking at fanworks, as well as fan discussion on the show that talks about how gay the show is (please let me know if I'm missing another way, though!). I also tried to look up "gaybaiting" and all I could find was Urban Dictionary definitions that's similar to other definitions for "queerbaiting", so I am working under a possibly incorrect assumption that you are using the term as a substitute of sorts to queerbaiting. If you choose to respond, please let me know if this was incorrect!

I'm sorry this has gotten very long, I hope this doesn't come across as being criticized because you are not! Queerbaiting has left such a lasting mark on so many people and it's hurtful to be baited like that. It's valid and understandable that you continue to look out for it, I know that I do the same. Also, I don't know much about how pop culture and media are discussed in China, so phrases such as "gay baiting" and "queerbaiting" may apply differently there. I don't expect a response to this, especially if my assumptions were incorrect. Regardless, thank you for taking the time to read this.

It's an excellent question and I am NOT an expert. I'm not Chinese, I don't know many/any Chinese people, nor am I a Chinese culture enthusiast. Hell, you can just ignore everything I say because I am certainly not qualified to be an authority on the topic (and was really hoping no one would say anything about my little joke, aha).

But! I do think that something like gay-baiting could be possible even in the Chinese context because, while illegal to show in mainstream media, there is gay content coming out of China -- there's no doubt to this. It's just not professionally made gay content, nor is it easy for non-Chinese people/speakers/readers to consume.

I'm mainly thinking of the very prominent danmei online spaces that exist via web-made audio dramas that's still quite active to this day afaik, even in spite of the unfortunately increase in the CCP's anti-LGBT censorship that's happened in the past few years.

So to answer the original question, this subculture existing and standard industry practices of taking these often very explicit audio dramas and bringing them to live action while obeying the censorship rules can rise to a sort of implicit gay baiting. Precisely because the characters can't actually be gay, subtler and unrelated things that have become shorthand for "eyo they gay". These shorthands become tropes, and tropes can be used to fill people's imaginations whenever these innocent things happen in actual innocent contexts. Though I can imagine any intentional choices of LAN's part are often much more tongue-in-cheek rather than any serious attempt at gay-baiting.

The fact that I'm convinced Studio LAN is pro-LGBT in their own silent but supporting way also increases my belief that any gayness between CXS and LG is also intentional. I'm also under the impression that LAN's twitter has also retweeted ShiGuang art among other gay things. And, okay, it's not strictly gay-baiting if the studio literally cannot make them gay because the government doesn't let people have fun, but it's a very similar mechanism/practice. And honestly, I'm skeptical that they'd do it even if they could just because hinting at being gay and letting the fans fill in the gaps is a lot easier and safer on studios in general. Especially in a country that's getting more and more homophobic over time in recent years...

Like, I don't know man. I'm not an expert in danmei or any of this stuff really, and honestly my explanation is rather hand-wavy for my own tastes. But wow do I feel in my balls that Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang have some ✨SOCIALIST BROTHERLY LOVE✨ together.

Most of my students have been using AI on papers, even though its use is banned in my class. I'm allowed by my department only to penalize students for whom I have rock-solid proof,* which ultimately means the students who used AI specifically for citation and quote generation.

It's a PITA that students are slipping by. They don't think we can tell they've used AI; we can tell. It's reeeaaaal obvious when an undergrad is magically writing at a peer-reviewed-journal level. The disrespect is crazy. Teachers simply have little recourse and no energy to deal with it.

Every student I've confronted has thought I caught on purely due to the writing style. It doesn't occur to them that the sources, the actual information, could be incorrect. I have had students resubmit their work, AI ostensibly cleaned away, and the hallucinations are still there.

My colleagues and I have no way of solving this in the long term. Students tell me to "ask ChatGPT" about things instead of to "Google it". They don't know what citations are. Their ability to write a basic short paper is nonexistent. They don't believe in their own ability to learn to do the work, and they don't value the effort.

AI is plagiarism, and I fully believe that schools (and any institutions concerned with ethics) need to introduce a zero-tolerance policy and to back up teachers on enforcing it.

*this is because students can contest the ruling, and it gets messy. Schools like to avoid messiness.

Forest Living

Well here we are at the beginning of another year. To say it´s started well would be incorrect. However to say it´s cold, freezing at times would be more like it, but we have plenty of seasoned wood in and a woodburning stove so we are warm. The weather has been a bit of a mixture cold, then up to 18dgs during the day and once or twice 0 to -1 on the odd night. We have had some rain but mostly sunny, although we did have three days of grey skies when we had to put the generator on. But hey we live in the middle of a forest in a valley in the mountains what else do you expect.

Our solar system has been amazing keeping us supplied with electricity and running the pump to give hot water. I have to say that when we first arrived here 20 years ago, there was only the original little house and we had a car battery, portaloo,(we now have a septic tank) small generator and portable tv. However, we have survived and improved bit by bit untill we are now totally self sufficent.....in other words WE ARE GREEN!

However, before anybody thinks wonderful or they must have money, WRONG....we came here because of my wifes health and I wanted somewhere quiet to write with little or no distractions. THAT didn´t exactly work out, my wifes health improved but I had far too many distractions. Being a London boy I found myself being distracted by the wildlife and birds. Still as with everything to do and having to save for the initial installation of solar and other stuff its taken years to arrive at this point, and my writing has had to evolve. We are pensioners and although we had some savings we had to be frugal. Going green was not an option it was a necessity. We have no on line electiricty, no piped in water, no sewage connection and no gas connection. You cannot get the pipes up here because mountains are made of rock and believe me we have looked at all ways to do this, however the cost is far far to much. We had a small 5,000 ltr cisterna which for a while fed the house quite comfortably, but we would have to get water delivered as once we had things organised it wasn´t enough. So I decided that we would build our own larger cisterna which would do two things. 1) provide the house with water and 2) god forbid, be a source of water for the firebrigade. SO, one year I hired a digger and had a hole dug then ordered steel mesh, cement and concrete mix and we started building. It took us a month of early mornings - because once the sun reached the back of the house we couldn´t work in the heat - and little by little we got it done. Yes it was hard work but the feeling after it was all finished was emmense. We were initially quoted 10,000Euros for a builder to do the job, no way did we have that sort of money so a retired engineer and his disabled wife did it for a fraction. Going Green is a real learning curve especially if you have the ability and inclination to do things yourself you really learn about your own abilities.

My writing was my way of relaxing and my historical adventure was called Clearing in the Forest because my inspriation came from our clearing and my love of both history and the forest. This lasted untill, that is, I found petanca, although the combination of both was and still is my enjoyment and escape into times gone by I do have other memories of forest living, but thats for another day. writing,
