Hi, I saw your post about Jewish indigeneity and as a non-Jewish, non-indigenous person, have a genuine question that I hope you will take in good faith. At what point of conflict and violence do we say that being indigenous to a region does not actually confer land rights? I'm gonna be honest: the fact that this is coming from a blank blog makes me far less likely to want to answer it, especially because I haven't been on tumblr as much lately and thus don't know if this is a copypasta ask.

Who are you? Have you read my pinned post? Have you read the many, many sources in it?

I am going to give you extremely truncated answers, but understand that you have a lot of reading to do that is not possible to summarize in an answer to a tumblr ask. (Edit: this got a lot longer than I expected, but I stand by my words that these are truncated, incomplete answers. You need to read several books to actually develop a reasonable understanding of this.)

At what point of conflict and violence do we say that being indigenous to a region does not actually confer land rights?

Never. What you are asking here conflates two separate concerns: (1) the rights of an indigenous group to the land they are indigenous to, and (2) the ethical responsibilities said indigenous group has towards other human beings, in particular those who also live on that land. People don't lose their indegeneity and thus their ties to the land by being bad people. "Indigenous" is not an indicator of moral purity or uprightness. It means that they have deep cultural, historical, and (often) religious roots in a particular land that cannot be severed without totally destroying the group as such.

Eretz Yisrael will always be the homeland of the Jewish people regardless of whether we have control over it or not, whether we have a sovereign nation there or not, whether we are permitted to live there or even visit there or not. All of our religious and cultural practices tie back to eretz Yisrael, even ones that have been adapted to the diaspora. Religiously observant Jews pray facing Jerusalem three times a day, our liturgy is infused with references to the land, the Temple in Jerusalem, the redemption (of the people to the land) and/or specific attributes of the land. Our sacred texts occur in and make constant reference to the land and our observance of the mitzvot and how that relates to the land. (A ton of the religious laws we are given are land-based because it developed as an agricultural religion, and a huge number of the rest are related to the Temple in Jerusalem.) We have three pilgrimage festivals that pre- forced diaspora, all Jews would make back to Jerusalem to make specific sacrifices. We still observe these festivals in ways adapted to the diaspora, but you need to understand that the essential condition of diasporic Jewry is one of constant longing to return to the land. We observe these things today to keep the knowledge alive so that someday, future generations of Jews can use that knowledge in eretz Yisrael. Jews are of that land and can never be severed from it without becoming something entirely different.

Now. Does that give us a right to act with total impunity? Absolutely not. We still have moral obligations to our fellow human beings that we have to observe no matter what. That is true of all peoples everywhere, indigenous or not.

But the idea that you can "punish" an indigenous group by severing their roots is to say that total cultural annihilation is a valid punishment ever, which is genocidal rhetoric.

I understand that having land stolen is a travesty and a part of genocide, and I don't mean to be dismissive.

You are one in a long long long long long long long long long long long line of gentiles who think that "Jews can just..." and (1) you're wrong; read what the Nazis did to ethnic Jews who converted to Christianity, the history of "new Christians"/conversos/etc. but also even if that were guaranteed to work (2) why should we have to change our culture instead of other people not trying to kill us for it?

This war is not about land claims though; not really. Hamas wants every Jew dead. That is why they started this war. They have promised a new October 7th every day until the whole land is entirely judenfrei. Of course there are reasonable Palestinians with legitimate policy objectives, but that's not who's driving this war, and the ones in Gaza who speak up about it tend to get abducted or have their families disappeared and are tortured until they escape, die, or are silenced.

Are there legitimate things to be discussed about Israel's approach in this war and/or in general? Sure. But this isn't "mere land claims." This is about the safety, lives, and self-determination of half the global Jewish population, the vast majority of whom are only there in the first place because they themselves or their parents/grandparents/great-grandparents fled (or were forcibly relocated) there as refugees of genocide. Israel is the only remaining place in the world for certain smaller Jewish sub-ethnicities. If Israel is destroyed, so much will be lost. And, we will be back to being subjects of the whims of hostile foreign powers who have proven again and again that they will just periodically expel or murder lots of us when it is politically useful for them to do so.

That is what is at stake for us.

The fact that you think that our connection to the land is "mere land claims" and not an existential part of our identity says volumes by itself, but the fact that you don't know what is actually at stake for us says even more. It tells me that you have a lot of reading to do.

Media explainers are a cheap way to become an instant expert on everything from billionaire submarine excursions to hellaciously complex geopolitical conflicts, but On The Media's "Breaking News Consumers' Handbooks" are explainers that help you understand other explainers:

The latest handbook is an Israel-Gaza edition. It doesn't aim to parse fine distinctions over the definition of "occupation" or identify the source of shell fragments. Rather, it offers seven bullet points' worth of advice on weighing all the other news you hear about the war:

I. "Headlines are obscured by the fog of war"

Headline writers have a hard job under the best of circumstances – trying to snag your interest in a few words. Headlines can't encompass all the nuance of a story, and they are often written by editors, not the writers who produced the story. Between the imperatives for speed and brevity and the broken telephone between editors and writers, it's easy for headlines to go wrong, even when no one is attempting to mislead you. Even reliable outlets will screw up headlines sometimes – and that likelihood goes way up in times like these. You gotta read the story, not just the headline.

II. Know red flags for bullshit

The factually untrue information that spreads furthest tends to originate with a handful of superspreader accounts. Whether these people are Just Wrong or malicious disinfo peddlers, they share a few characteristics that should trip your BS meter and prompt extra scrutiny:

High-frequency posting

Emotionally charged framing

Posts that purport to be summaries or excerpts from news outlets, but do not include links to the original

The phrase "breaking news" (no one has that many scoops)

III. Don't trust screenshots

Screenshots of news stories, tweets, and other social media should come with links to the original. It's just too damned easy to fake a screenshot.

IV. "Know your platform"

It used to be that Twitter got a lot of first-person accounts from people in the thick of crises, while Facebook and Reddit contained commentary and reposts. Today, Twitter is just another aggregator. This time around, there's lots of first-person, real-time reporting coming off Telegram (it runs well on old phones and doesn't chew up batteries). Instagram is widely used in both Israel and the West Bank.

V. "Crisis actors" aren't a thing

People who attribute war images to "crisis actors" are either deluded or lying. There's plenty of ways to distort war news, but paying people to pretend to be grieving family members is essentially unheard of. Any explanation that involves crisis actors is a solid reason to permanently block that source.

VI. There's plenty of ways to verify stuff that smells fishy

TinEye, Yandex and Google Image Search are all good tools for checking "breaking" images and seeing if they're old copypasta ganked from earlier conflicts (or, you know, video-games). The fact that an image doesn't show up in one of these searches doesn't guarantee its authenticity, of course.

VII. Think before you post

Israel-Gaza is the most polluted media pool yet. Don't make it worse.

The media environment sucks, and warrants skepticism and caution. But we also need to be skeptical of skepticism itself! As danah boyd started saying all the way back in 2018, weaponized media literacy leads to conspiratorialism:

Remember, the biggest peddlers of "fake news" are also the most prolific users of the term. For a lot of these information warriors, the point isn't to get you to believe them – they'll settle for you believing nothing. "Flood the zone with bullshit" is Steve Bannon's go-to tactic, and it's one that his acolytes have picked up and multiplied.

It's important to be a critical thinker, but there's plenty of people who've figured out how to weaponize a critical viewpoint and turn it into nihilism. Remember, the guy who wrote How To Lie With Statistics was a tobacco industry shill who made his living obfuscating the link between smoking and cancer. It's absolutely possible to lie with statistics, but it's also possible to use statistics to know the truth, as Tim Harford explains in his 2021 must-read book The Data Detective:

Honestly, without being able to see the source myself to dig into the user history to determine their legitimacy or accuracy, I can’t tell. I can verify that some of this info is correct:

Invictus Games is backed by the Ministry of Defense and British government leadership.

Harry is the face of it. Both his PR and the Royal Foundation were used to launch the organization.

The Royal Foundation pulled their support after William booted the Sussexes and Invictus Games was spun off into its own charitable foundation at that point, predominantly backed by the military and the MOD more than the BRF.

I’m not sure about anything else and like I said, without knowing the source, there isn’t much I can do.

From where I sit, the dirty secret isn’t that the MOD is propping Invictus up, though, because that’s very well known and it really is only due to the alliances that there’s as much international participation as there is - but that’s not unique to IG. That’s typical of all war games; it's allies getting together and training together. The only thing different about IG from all the other war games allied countries do is that it also includes veterans, not just active duty military service members.

To me, the dirty secret is that the UK - whether it’s the MOD or ELF or the BRF or Harry, it doesn’t really matter - stole the concept from the US. It's literally a copypasta of the DOD's Warrior Games. The only tweak is that they made it international with multiple countries participating because the UK's military is far too small (specifically compared to the US's) to have that kind of diverse friendly competition. And they papered over the copypasta by blasting us with Hero Harry PR.

I don't know enough about the Help for Heroes organization to be able to comment on that piece, either. What I do know is that Help for Heroes got hit hard by COVID, they struggled to bounce back, and the Royal British Legion got the tap instead. Did they struggle because the MOD pulled their support? Was it because they didn't have Harry as patron or sponsor anymore? Was it the lack of a royal affiliation? I don't know and again, not knowing this source or being able to do my own fact-checking into this, it's not something I'd trust as accurate.

Which we know he has neither because of the mess he's currently in: most of his money lost on lawsuits, a wife who's cheapened his reputation, ostracized by the UK, and cast out by his family.

Harry stuck with Invictus through all this time because they let him walk all over them. They let Harry use them as a personal PR tool. And not just Harry - Meghan too, despite the public criticism.

Which is also a flaw, or a hole in the LSA anon's report - if Invictus is truly backed and operated by the MOD, and they're using Harry or Harry's PR as a front...then why aren't they controlling the Sussex shenanigans? Because the more the Sussexes act out, the more the Games become about Meghan, the more people that walk away from Invictus, the more criticism there is. And the less people there are, the less cover there behind the scenes, so the MOD's involvement - especially to the extent that the anon posits - is bound to come out.

But that said, we all know that Harry is absolutely failing as the IG patron. I suspect the MOD fills in where he can't, and that's why all the host countries have been very close allies - US, Canada, Germany, the Hague. And I suspect that's why Birmingham ended up getting the 2027 bid; IG had to fall back on their government/MOD connections and optics for that much government intervention usually goes down better when it's on home soil.

Either way, we'll find out. Invictus really doesn't have much longer - the Games always run way over budget, which doesn't bode well for international partnerships. Then factor in that Birmingham too is having their own financial problems and it's really looking like Birmingham 2027 is probably the end of Invictus Games, unless there's a huge injection of new attention, new donors, and fresh PR, and what better, easier way to get all that than from the patron's successful reconciliation with his father, The King?

I mean, it's either that or the MOD fully takes over and absorbs Invictus into their apparatus as DOD has Warrior Games.

I don't mean to be totally pessimistic about it, but...just something to think about. Why else would Charles or BP be talking about Birmingham 2027? It's two years away.

AO3 is just like this. "If you don't like it, email them" is always the reply. Then they don't read the emails or, when they do, go, "we'll totally think about this if we ever discuss undoing this change". This is corporate for "the paper in the suggestion box gets put in the furnace come winter". Nobody says it has no problems because it's a non-profit. But it has distinctly different problems from the ones a for-profit organization would have. Such as the chronically overworked, overextended volunteer force. So yes, the most common response will be "go volunteer yourself." Although your obvious anger issues would make volunteering rather difficult.

But I do think there's some credibility to the idea AO3 itself is populated by dumb people. All fics are in the Chris Evans category by default, everyone whose fic is about Sam Wilson - I mean, Anthony Mackie, my bad - has to move their fic to the new category manually.

I was so shocked that suddenly a so-called 2025 F1 drivers' logo summary with misinformation was all over the internet, and some people in this fandom without basic fact-checking abilities just became crazy shitting on Liam, calling him copypasta or zero creativity. So I felt the need to write this long post about Liam Lawson's past and current logos, and where the double L logo came from.

What's Liam Lawson's official logo?

You'll never find a double L logo in his past or current helmet design because it was never his official logo. If you check pictures of his helmets, you'll mostly only find this design: The Kiwi bird + stars (NZ's symbol) + his full name. He explained the design of the helmet in this article.

In 2024 when he came back to VCARB, he had a brand new design of his name logo: A blond cartoon boy with a pink hat + his last name + a star. Apparently, this will be his official logo in the 2025 season too becuase his official site has also changed to it correspondingly. None of these are related to the "double L", let alone copy-paste Lando's logo.

So where did the "double L "come from?

I used to think it was a bullshit made up by f1twt or reddit until I found there was a tweet said the double L appeared on Liam's website as the footer. So I went to find the webpage snapshot dated back to 04Dec2024, and found that double L logo: an icon appearing on the tab, next to the website name. This was the only trace of that double L logo:

I could imagine this double L icon was intended to echo the design of his name logo at that time: his full name surrounded by a parallelogram plus the first letter of his last name and first name. However, it was not an official logo design of himself.

And I think Liam was aware of that. Now his website design totally reflects the new logo and the pink hat boy has replaced the double L icon on the tab.

Ok. I think all the bullshit about Liam's logo should now stop here. It's so ridiculous that I didn't take a lot of effort to find out all the facts above, meanwhile people on the internet being copycats spreading copied misinformation from an unverified source in 30 seconds call a driver copycat. I have never heard of that Mola Mola game what is it and what makes it bad? (Genuinely asking because I'm curious and I don't understand why people hate Mola Molas and Cheetahs and stuff)

I’ve never played it myself, but I’ve heard that it is an infuriating game! You raise a sunfish but it’s ridiculously sensitive and will die from just about anything. It’s partly meant to be that way, because there’s so many different deaths available. I had one person tell me once that sunfishes are as fragile in real life as in the game, but… I personally find it really hard to believe? The only sources I found for sunfishes’ supposedly peculiar deaths lead right back to the game and to people ranking the different deaths. A fish that makes several trips a day to hundreds of meters deep water and basks in the sun on the surface to warm up and get parasites picked off doesn’t seem like it would just die when it sees the sunrise.

People say they hate the sunfish for “uselessness”, but in reality they’ve all just read this one copypasta with inaccurate information or the various copies of it and parrot it. The same goes for cheetahs, except there’s no copypasta as far as I know and there’s just this strange consensus on them as “bad” animals in internet biology circles..? It’s just people not realising that animals are cool and valuable and proof of that is that they exist. Best not to dwell on them too much: all animals are super cool!
