About Problematic Kin

While I take this brief interlude on my blog, I would like to make something abundantly clear that I have had others inquiring about-- I will never turn away problematic or ‘antagonist’ fictionkin and fictives. 

I have seen you pushed to the wayside without anyone allowing you to get your foot in the door, or taking the time to understand your story. It's a shame because I have met so many wonderful kins who hesitate to interact with their own communities, and if I shut them out, I would have missed out on some genuinely wonderful interactions.

 To the HABITs of Everyman HYBRID, the Andys and Ashleys of The Coffin of Andy and Leyley, the Kevins of Welcome to Nightvale,  and the Jonah Magnuses of The Magnus Archives, I want YOUR STORY. I want to understand your experiences, your memories but most of all I want you to know that you aren't alone. Whether you're a slasher from a horror film or a protagonist from a source material that has gained a reputation.. I would like to hear you out, to understand you in your entirety because I too have been marked by something horrific, and it has defined me my whole life. 

I want you to know that while it may feel impossible to stop that feeling, maybe we can all peer into the unknown together, and find joy in this life in spite of previous ones.

I just finished The Magnus Archives.

I don’t… I don’t know how to feel…

MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE ENTIRE SERIES AHEAD

I don’t remember exactly when I was properly hooked. It wasn’t episode 1. I don’t think it was even the first 10 episodes. I mean- Vampire Hunter got me really thinking it was good, but I don’t think I was hooked yet.

I think it was hearing Jon and Martin interact, during and after episode 22: Colony.

I don’t remember when I noticed just how interconnected the plot was.

It wasn’t the first season. I don’t think it was the second. Maybe the third was when I started to put the pieces together.

Episode 147: Weaver I made a guess. A random theory. Because by that point it was revealed that Gertrude didn’t need to record her statements to feed the eye.

I thought “hey, what if the tapes are The Web?”

It was probably around then I began to notice how interconnected everything was.

Then, of course, there’s “Hello Jon, apologies for the deception”

The season 4 finale was terrifying, and spelled out exactly how connected everything was. And that was that.

Or, so I thought.

Episode 197: Connected.

I felt TRUE vindication.

I was RIGHT.

The tapes were The Web, and I was right.

In episode 199: Seeing it Through, when Martin, Jon, Basira, Melanie, and Georgie laid out exactly how their plan was going to go, I knew something was going to go wrong.

I didn’t expect Jon to stray. To do his own thing.

I thought Jonah was going to get in the way, maybe kill Martin, or Georgie, or- someone.

I didn’t expect Jon to go full 600 strike on Jonah Magnus, alone.

I didn’t expect Jon to become the pupil of The Eye.

And I definitely didn’t expect Jon and Martin to both die.

I’ve got The Magnus Protocols to listen to now, and Welcome to Nightvale has been recommended a few times to me too.

But I think I need to sit on this one, to process that ending.

I will say; I don’t think Jon had to die.

I think if Martin instead took out his eyes, he might’ve been freed, and it would effectively have worked just like if he’d died. He can’t behold if he can’t see. Do I think it would’ve made a better ending? I don’t know. I know it would’ve been a fun callback to Jon begging Martin to gouge his eyes out and run away together. It would’ve tied back into that discovery. But would it have been better? I don’t know.

I actually guessed that the way they were going to end it, and I do think this would’ve worked if Annabelle hadn’t made it impossible, was that they were going to put the camera in the panopticon. It blocks The Eye’s view, so stopping it from the source could surely reverse the Watcher’s Crown. If they had gone that route, there definitely would’ve been more struggle to get there camera there. But, Annabelle destroyed the camera, so we’ll never know.

Anyway, I’m very sad about the way it ended and have no idea how to feel or what to do now.
