A while ago, I decided I wanted to start an F/O journal.
I tried it, didn’t feel connected to it and ultimately gave up.
I decided to give it another go, this time searching for a journal that felt important to me, something representative of me and Wonka.
I found this one at target, but passed it up because I hate spiral-bound notebooks:

I loved the pattern because I associate him with the color blue and this pattern reminded me of the first poem I ever wrote about him, so I tasked myself with scouring the internet to see if I could find a composition book with this same pattern and what I found did not disappoint.
A quick reverse-image search turned up an almost identical composition-style notebook available for purchase from an individual seller on Amazon.
Not only was the style and design exactly what I was looking for, but the seller’s shop was called Willy’s Notes.
And at that point, I knew.
This is the notebook, pictured with my blue bow blanket that reminds me of Wonka🥺:

Systems Only Work For The Person Teaching Them

I'm sure you've seen the ads. Between social media and some newsletters I subscribe to probably a dozen of them hit my inbox this week. - Learn Indie Author Secrets - The Secrets To Being A 6-Figure Author - Your First $1000 Courses like that are literally a dime a dozen, but usually the people teaching them have large followings and position themselves as publishing gurus. "If I can do this, then so can you," the ads proclaim all the while they contain a little asterisk staying "results not guaranteed". First of all, there are no secrets. Authors work with words on a daily basis and we talk--a lot. For every class teaching you the "secrets" there are probably a thousand or more people in Facebook groups or on social media following writing-related hashtags who are ready to tell you what's already in those courses. And they'll share. For Free.
What Big Names (BNs) Don't Want You To Know:
There are two real solid facts that most BN course teachers don't want you to know, and it's the same thing that most business and entrepreneur coaches don't want you to know. Any systems that are taught in a class only worked for the person teaching the class and those who think/act like them. It's true. And considering the infinite diversity of humans, not to mention neurotypes, living conditions, supportive (or not) people around them, then it's also not surprising that a lot of people will spend a lot money on classes and not get those results. A great example is when I tell people I'm an author, and when they ask how many books I've written, I've shrug and say, "I don't know. There's over 200 on my Amazon dashboard." Obviously they're like "wow, that's a lot of books" so the next question is obvious, "How'd you manage to write so much?" And there's no secret, there's no hidden trick or rapid release program that I'm following. The truth is my career has spanned over 20 years at this point, I type over 100 words per minute based on the last test I took, I don't have human children, and I have been blessed to have both a supportive partner/spouse and when my mother was alive and needed substantial care, she was also supportive and lived with us, so I could write while she was napping. I also learned how to write a lot of my books a sentence at a time between the calls while working on a busy help desk. Oh, and a lot of my books are in the 20k-40K range because that's what works for my brain. This is very unique to me, my life, my neurotype. And it's a lot like the classes that are taught by big names, many of whom come into this business with a background in internet marketing or from an other helpful industry. Let's look at a broader example. Handwriting. I think a lot of us would think that there is a system that schools use to teach handwriting. But guess what? It doesn't work for everyone. In fact, it wasn't until my own ADHD diagnosis and seeing it talked about on social media that how I hold the pencil is very indicative of a neurodivergent brain. And my mix of cursive and print? Oh that's classic ADHD. (This is a brief but good overview of the subject.) I can blame my messing handwriting on typing much more than I write (though grocery lists are on a legal pad, not a spiral notebook, and written out by hand 2 weeks at a time), but it's also more likely my ADHD. And when you think that a good number of children who go through school and learn to write are nerutypical, our handwriting is still never the same. If you have a neurodivergent brain or chronic illness/disability, those instructors never meant you anyway. Here's the kicker. There's a very high likelihood that if you have a neurodivergent brain or chronic illness/disability, those instructors never meant you anyway. And if you do have a neurodivergient brain, or they do, there's a good chance that what you're learning contains an awful lot of masking. When you make unmasking a large portion of how you present to the world, because I don't know about you, but I'm tired of "instagram fake" personalities. We are messy creatures, and it's good that we see each other as diverse, messy, raw, and beautiful. Until those teaching courses and charging hundreds of dollars start to acknowledge their identities and their intersectionality (or lack thereof), nothing will change. The bottom line is systems only work for those who create them, or those who choose to emulate the people. For some of us, that impossible, and also, that's okay. Which means, if an instructor is promising you "the secret" to anything without telling you where they're coming from and being brutally honest (If you don't have a marketing background this will take much longer for you, etc.) about their identities, their experience, and their intersectionality, then they're just hoping you'll pay money and not read between the lines. Press Release:
Orit Guttmacher Levy
Sacred Art for Creating Peace, Inner Healing, Unity and Love
Written by Orit Ben Sheffer
International artist and entrepreneur Orit Guttmacher Levy, who exhibited at the prestigious exhibition in Milan "Artigiano in Fiera", is now launching 26 coloring books and notebooks on Amazon in a unique and magical artistic style, touching on the Jewish soul and sacred geometry, inspired by the personal journey she embarked on following the October 7th, 2023 terror attack on Israel.
"Sacred geometry combines geometric shapes and mathematical formulas with precise divine proportions, which demonstrate the basic principles and patterns that exist in nature and the universe. For example, the "golden ratio" and the spiral that appear in the snail shell, a hurricanes and in certain galactic structures, and through which one can connect to the feeling of "oneness", i.e. a harmonious connection between man, the universe and creation. Creating, observing, and painting these wondrous and universal structures contribute to a sense of energetic-physical-mental balance. They inspire peace and vitality, release inhibiting thoughts, expand consciousness, and enable a deep spiritual connection between cultures and religions," explains Orit Guttmacher Levy, owner of the brand "HALELUYA Sacred Soul Art".
Sacred geometry is ancient and based on shapes that exist in nature, which are expressed in numerical relationships and precise proportions. Design according to the principles of sacred geometry has appeared in art and architecture throughout history since the days of the pyramids in Egypt and the Parthenon in Athens. It is integrated into ancient cultures in India and China, as well as in the construction of religious buildings such as churches and synagogues. Buildings designed according to the principles of sacred geometry are considered to have a unique effect on visitors in terms of harmonious balance and a connection between the physical and spiritual dimensions. The golden ratio, for instance, is a geometric proportion that appears in nature and is considered aesthetically ideal. Famous artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael used the golden ratio to divide their compositions, create order and balance, and to demonstrate the connection between figures and space or between figures and God. In a variety of religious artworks, the circle represents wholeness and infinity, while the triangle symbolizes the Holy Trinity. Sacred geometry not only adds aesthetic depth to works of art but also serves as a bridge between the physical and the spiritual. It allows artists to convey complex messages about human existence, divinity, and nature, and invites the viewer to delve into the deeper meaning of the work.
After the events of October 7th, Orit, a mother of three teenage sons, found herself embarking alone on a wandering journey across countries and continents in search of a quiet and safe place. Over the past year, she has traveled to Crete, Denmark, Costa Rica, and the United States and faced challenging experiences and encounters in the places she has stayed. Among other things, she dealt with a serious virus in Costa Rica, slept on a couch in a friend's living room in Denmark, had a scare when a Sudanese refugee ship crashed next to her while visiting the island of Gavdos near Crete, and more. "The only thing I kept at all times from the moment I left the country was my art, it was what kept me going and helped me cope. I left in a hurry out of fear, even without the laptop that was forgotten in my bag at home in Yesod Hama'ala in the Galilee," she says.
"The artwork helped me cope with the feeling of grief following the October 7th massacre, with the forced separation from my children, the distance from my country, my home settlement, and the people, and with the wanderings and loneliness when I feel threatened by the very fact of being an Israeli Jew and an American. I always knew that art heals, but saying it and experiencing it are two completely different things."
Guttmacher Levy, who began her artistic journey from her childhood experiences in the Galilee among wheat fields and pomegranate trees on the banks of the Jordan River, says: "In my grandparents' house, I absorbed the values of Judaism and the sense of holiness surrounding the family meal on Shabbat night, the candles, the blessings. I remember that every Shabbat I used to paint peacefully and harmoniously with the many colors and booklets that my grandmother brought me from the United States."
As a young mother, Orit set up a studio in her home to create decorative designs in wood and children's games, and even participated in an important exhibition in Milan called "Artigiano in Fiera." Since 2015, the business has been adapted and "updated" to the digital age and international e-commerce. The products can be purchased and downloaded online as individual units or as part of a subscription by topic, for both private and institutional customers.
The diverse collection that Orit launched on Amazon now includes two series highlights: “Jewish Soul Art Series” and “Sacred Soul Art Series.” The Jewish series features designs influenced by the Kabbalah and the holiness of the Land of Israel, along with symbols such as the “Chariot” (a 3D Star of David), prayers, and blessings. The other series focuses on sacred geometry, with designs based on universal spiritual principles and symbols from ancient cultures.
About Orit Guttmacher Levy
Orit is an Israeli-American artist, owner of the brands *Zebratoys* and *HALELUYA Sacred Soul Art*. She offers a connection to the Jewish and universal spiritual world through ancient symbols and sacred geometry. In her work, she combines her love of Judaism, the mysticism of the Kabbalah, and creativity through inspiring life experiences. Orit has created over 1,800 designs and sees her work as a tool for spreading messages of kindness, unity, and universal love.

Best notebook for making notes
Are you asking me to share my personal preferences for notebooks (such as “my favorite notebook”)? Or are you looking for suggestions that meet specific criteria you’ve outlined, like “lie flat,” “not spiral-bound,” “lightweight,” and so on—without concern for what I personally use or prefer? That said, my favorite notebook for taking notes happens to be the Maruman 80-sheet A5 Spiral Note. Admittedly, it’s spiral-bound and has lightweight paper, although not as lightweight as the 40-sheet version of the same product. It’s also relatively affordable, as I purchased them in multi-packs at a discounted price on Amazon when the opportunity arose. The paper itself isn’t particularly toothy, which works well with my fountain pens, and I like to pair it with my Mayplous A5 notebook cover—a combination I thoroughly enjoy using. However, that’s just my personal experience, reflecting my specific use case and the particular prices I encountered. My recommendation based on this would not necessarily guarantee others the same level of satisfaction or cost-effectiveness. Now, if you’re seeking a notebook that lies flat, is not spiral-bound, lightweight, and inexpensive—this is quite easy to find. Almost any Japanese 30-sheet notebook in A5, B5, or A4 sizes will meet those criteria. Brands like Kokuyo Campus and Logical Swing are excellent options that satisfy all of these requirements. If you have access to a Daiso store (I can easily find them in Sydney, Australia), you can find such notebook sizes at very reasonable prices. Additionally, some MUJI 30-sheet notebooks made in Japan also perform exceptionally well in this regard and are even more affordable than those from Daiso. However, I have noticed that MUJI has recently raised prices on some of its paper products. Are you asking me to share my personal preferences for notebooks (such as “my favorite notebook”)? Omgomgomg I’m so glad you asked >:D
I have no idea if these kind of notebooks have an official name, but a lot of people call them chunky notebooks! (I particularly like parako’s videos on theirs)
I usually start with drawing a character that has infested my brain, then finding other things that I feel match their vibe to add around them. (For Leshy, I tried to find patterns and textures that carried the same vibes as a maid dress.) I also usually put in some elements from whatever media the character is from as well :3
For example, while I was playing Cotl I noticed some really cool flowers in the background so I took a screenshot and added some to the design, along with some of the tarot card shop dangly things bc I just really wanted to draw them.

I also make jewelry so I have a ton of little bits and charms, but definitely get in the habit of keeping little pieces of paper or whatnot with cool patterns or textures. Sometimes I’ll have a more concrete idea of how I want a page to look, but if I’m feeling stuck I’ll just look through my collection of things and it usually gives my inspiration.
As for actual art supplies, I’ve found it’s mostly about how you use things. I’m currently using some very cheap alcohol markers off of amazon, a 7 year old bottle of Elmer’s school glue, pencils from god knows where, and acrylic markers that my friends lent me.
I use a spiral notebook so I don’t really have a problem closing it, but a lot of people just embrace the chaos!

Sorry if this is really long or disjointed I really like talking about my art :3
I hope this helps!

Did another page for my notebook :D
Leshy very heavily inspired by https://www.instagram.com/very_tired_child/ wonderful fanart!!

Long Journey's End - Moving from Writer to Author

National Author's Day Monday, November 1st, was National Author’s Day. I won't officially become an author for another two weeks, National Author’s Day had a real meaning this year. On Wednesday, November 15, 2023, I will release my debut novel on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. It has been almost ten years since I began this journey. April 5, 2014 I printed a note to myself: I’m going to write a novel and get it published. I’m going to do it because writing a novel is worthwhile and because I have the talent to do it. I’m going to do it because I have something important to say to the world. I refuse to let anything get in my way. Writing Note Above My Desk I printed it out, signed it, and posted it on the bulletin board above my desk at home. Though I don't know where I got the idea, it served as a reminder to me when I got stuck or didn’t know how to proceed. I would write every day during lunch at work. The first 40,000 words poured onto the page as I wrote long-hand in a spiral notebook. Then I got stuck. I knew how the story started and ended, but I didn’t know how to flesh out the story to make it a novel. But, the note reminded me of my goal. Getting Unstuck I bought a book, Writing Fiction for Dummies, (https://www.amazon.com/Writing-Fiction-Dummies-Randy-Ingermanson/dp/0470530707), which introduced me to Randy Ingermanson’s Snowflake Method. (https://www.ingermanson.com/) It helped me organize my thoughts and the plot into a story that could become a novel. During the downtime on writing, I copied the hand-written manuscript to the computer, though I still had difficulty finding the time to write. When I retired from my job, I still only had about 40,000 words, though I had developed a Character Bible and other background information for the story. Since my retirement nearly three years ago, the novel has expanded to over 80,000 words. Finished Product I have edited and rewritten it several times. Critique partners, beta readers, editors, and a proofreader have all read it and made suggestions. I have documented some of this journey in previous blogs (Book Update and Website Changes), and now I stand on the threshold of becoming a published author. I may not have taken on writing a novel if I had realized how much work learning how to write involved. But with the constant reminder of the note above my desk and the encouragement of my wife and others, my first novel is complete. Salvation and Doom Cover Now, I am both excited about the release and afraid that no one will buy it. hi jasper, i hope this question isn't too annoying lol
so i seem to remember that you made a post (maybe an answer to an ask) detailing your personal journals/books for your wizardry, but i can't seem to find it. it was interesting to read, and i'm trying to compile my own magical notebooks and wanted some inspiration from the way others had made theirs.
did you make a post like that, or am i imagining it? lol. thanks in advance
I know I've done that. I know for a fact that that post exists. It's from April 18th of this year and is already outdated. So for you, anon, I'll talk about my currently in-progress magical grimoires and adjacent magical books.
Book Review Notes - a 3-subject college-ruled red spiral notebook. It's where I write the information down for my book reviews. I actually need to type up and post my review of Tarot By Numbers.
Challenge Book - a 3-subject college-ruled red spiral notebook from a different brand. This is where I do those 7/15/30/31 day challenges - usually all in the same day.
Book of Bullshit - a 1-subject college-ruled grey spiral notebook with a front pocket. This is my arcanabula, my orizon, this is where I write down frantic notes about spells or tarot spreads I'm developing, random notes of things I'm researching, and random thoughts that have no better place.
The Tome of Spells & Refinement - a 1-and-a-half-inch black o-ring binder where I keep the spells I have written (including ones that have never seen the light of Tumblr), my crystal grids, and information about my Magic The Gathering spells that I need to develop.
The White Binder - a 1-and-a-half-inch white d-ring binder. In here, I keep most of my miscellaneous information that I refer to a lot, including my MTG enchanting board, printouts of Dungeons and Dragons and The Elder Scrolls materials for me to review, and most of my non-pop culture magic information. My servitors and thoughtforms also have information in here.
The Epsilon Ledger - three faux-leather (aka plastic) notebooks from Walmart. These hold correspondences, information about necromancy and local magic, prayers and devotionals to deities...anything that's personal but not journal-esque. These are grimoires proper, only information, not musings or records of readings.
The Zeta Witchbook - a 1-subject college-ruled black notebook from the generic Target brand Up & Up. This was for the @2022grimoirechallenge before they fell off the face of the planet.
Enby Dragon - a cheap notebook from Amazon with a dragon in the nonbinary flag colors on the cover. This is where I keep my information on Flight Rising pop culture paganism involving the flights and the deities.
Volo's Journal - inspired by the D&D/MTG artifact of the same name, this is a fancy-looking grey sketchbook where I keep information on different types of non-physical entities and, well, animals alike. I use art cards from MTG for the visuals because my drawing abilities leave much to be desired.
Mixin' It Up - a 1-subject college-ruled purple notebook. Since I get some powders pre-mixed, I write down what they're made from and the mutually-shared correspondences between them.
This is to say nothing of the literal stack of empty notebooks that I am saving for future magical usage, nor of the notebooks that I used as grimoires and similar things earlier in my craft. I...may be mildly addicted to notebooks.
I hope this has given you a few ideas, anon!

Last images of Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira found on recovered phone
Photos and videos on phone found near site of men’s killing show some of their last movements in Brazilian Amazon
Some of the last images of Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira have been found after Indigenous activists recovered a mobile phone Pereira was carrying when the two men were killed in the Brazilian Amazon last year.
The phone was found last October when activists from Univaja, the Indigenous association where Pereira worked, returned to a stretch of flooded forest along the Itaquaí River where the men’s bodies were taken after they were shot dead on their boat on the morning of 5 June 2022.
With the help of a metal detector, the group found several items belonging to the victims, including Phillips’s UK press card, two spiral notebooks the journalist and longtime Guardian contributor had taken on the four-day reporting trip into the Javari valley region, and one of two phones Pereira was carrying.
Indigenous activists and police found other items belonging to the men in the same location during last year’s 10-day search for their bodies.
After months underwater, Phillips’s notebooks were illegible. But federal police forensic teams were able to recover several images from the handset, according to the Brazilian broadcaster Globoplay, which was with the Indigenous activists when they made the discovery.

...i said i was going to make it and well, here we are i guess. im so sorry for this.
Carlos Molina’s to Guide to Ghost Hood (title subject to change)
welcome to the 1st edition, maybe i’ll make a 2nd if i get inspired enough but also, this is such a mess already i don’t think the world needs a part 2 dfghg
Link to the power point is in the first reblog. (i’d highly recommend watching it for the full experience dfgh)
Link to ao3 also in the first reblog.
below the cut is the accompanying fic and description of the rules/guide.
The tape recorder lets out a low buzzing sound as Carlos presses a button on the side and stands it up between them on the dining room table. Julie shoots an amused glance at Reggie who’s taken up residence in the chair next to him, the two of them flipping open notebooks and clutching pencils.
“Where did you even find a tape recorder?” She wonders, stretching out a finger to touch the silver rectangle only for her hand to be swatted away by Reggie.
“Found it in a box of moms stuff and dad said we could order some tapes from amazon,” Carlos replies matter of factly, straightening up in his chair once he seems to have found the page he was looking for. “Right. Let's start off easy, shall we?”
He looks at her expectantly and Julie rolls her eyes, waving a hand at the two of them, “Lets.”
“Question one,” Carlos taps his pencil at the top of his page before squinting at her, “Did you conduct any séance related activities before the ghosts showed up?”
Julie blinks at him, wondering if he’s joking but the pair of them just look back at her, heads both slightly tilted and it’s at that moment that she realises how serious they’re going to be about this. It was going to be a long afternoon of questioning apparently.
“No, I didn’t conduct any séance related activities. I just put on their CD and they y’know, fell out of the sky.”
“Interesting, interesting,” Carlos mutters as he looks at Reggie’s notebook as the older boy writes her answer down, underlines something and taps it with his pencil that makes Carlos let out a small hm. “So you don’t know anything about the dark room? Didn’t make any wishes?”
“No,” Julie shakes her head, watches Reggie write something else down and tilt his notebook to Carlos. It’s weird, watching them communicate like that, like they’ve created a shorthand between them and don’t even require her presence to have a conversation. Which is obviously true because they’ve clearly discussed all this beforehand.
“You walked through Luke right? What did that feel like to you?” Reggie’s question catches her off guard and she looks between them, but Carlos is already looking at her, waiting for her answer.
“It was um cold? But also not. I--” she frowns, trying to think back to that first night in the kitchen when she’d turned around and walked through him. Back when she’s barely known any of them and was more annoyed by their presence then comforted. “It was weird. The first few seconds after I walked through him I just felt cold but then it was like a rush of warmth? You know when you get one of those random shivers that runs through your whole body? It feels all weird and tingly but also kinda nice? Like that.”
“Did it feel like you got a feel of Luke?” Carlos asks and Julie shrugs, a slight blush on her cheeks and somehow, despite the fact they can’t see each other, the two of them share a look.
“What’s the next question,” anything to move off the topic of walking through Luke and how it felt.
//
“Oh Julie is gonna be so pissed at you guys,” Alex mutters but makes no move to step in and stop the ‘experiment’ currently going on. He watches as Reggie tries to put a hand on Carlos’ shoulder, fingers phasing through the younger boy's jacket with a frown.
“She won't be pissed if it works,” is all Reggie says, face morphing into one of concentration as he slowly lowers his hand on to Carlos’ shoulder again.
For his part, Carlos bounces slightly on his toes, eyes fixed on the notebook in Alex’s hand in case they need to tell him something. And okay, Alex might not fully agree with the way the two of them are going about this whole thing, but he can’t say he’s not on board with it. Their whole stint as ghosts has been nothing but confusion after confusion that not even Willie has answers for. Does he think Reggie and Carlos are going to uncover some fundamental thing that makes them the way they are? Probably not. Will they maybe get him some kind of answer? God he hopes so.
Especially since there’s been small moments in the last few weeks where Ray and Carlos have been able to hear them even without them playing music or Julie nearby. Which had scared all of them. Thought it was nothing compared to Ray’s reaction when he’d apparently walked into the kitchen to find Julie and Luke hugging, only for him to vanish when they suddenly let go. It was a hell of a way to find out they could be seen if they were touching her.
“Oh!” Carlos suddenly exclaims, head whipping to look at his shoulder where Reggie’s hand is resting solidly on the fabric of the jacket. Alex feels his eyes widen a fraction and watches Reggie’s smile widen as he squeezes slightly on Carlos’ shoulder. “Oh my god! I can feel that!”
“Holy shit,” Alex whispers, grip on the pencil in his fingers growing.
“Hey! I heard that too! Quick! Write it down! 30 minutes and- and however many attempts it took!” Carlos grins, face turning towards him and Alex doesn’t even have time to feel guilty about swearing before he’s scribbling in Reggie’s notebook.
//
“Thanks again for taking me,” Carlos says as he pulls his seat belt across his chest and clicks it in, eyes drifting from his tia in the front seat to the little notebook resting on the back seat and the pencil that’s hovering just a few inches off the paper. Subtly he sees it tap on the page, once, twice, and he bites down on his grin, tucking his hands under his thighs to stop from bouncing in his seat. They’re ready.
“Of course mijo,” Victoria smiles over at him as she turns on the engine, fingers already messing with the buttons on the radio to find her favourite station. “I have to say I’m impressed. Planning ahead for your dad's birthday.”
“Mhm,” he agrees, his eyes on the notebook that he can just see in the rearview mirror. The pencils resting between the creases in the pages and he holds his breath as the radio jumps to a different station.
Victoria frowns slightly, her eyes darting from the road to the radio and back, hand reaching out to change it back. When it jumps to another station. And another. Carlos feels his eyes widen a little, legs bouncing on top of his hands as he watches the radio cycle through station after station, only lingers for a few seconds on each before moving on.
Finally it stops, the words of Despacito ringing through the car and it’s lucky they’re at a red light he thinks, because when Victoria tries to change it it jumps right back.
“What the f-” she starts, the furrow between her brows growing deeper and the knuckles on her hand that’s still gripping the wheel turning white.
“Can we leave it? I like this song,” he looks over at her with a smile, blinking in what he hopes is a completely innocent way. He’s pretty sure she’s too distracted by the radio to question it.
“Sure, sure,” she mutters, not even looking at him, eyes going from the road to the radio.
The song ends and from the corner of his eye he can see the pencil in the back moving, Reggie or Willie writing something down and he has to stop himself from turning around to see what it is. Instead he watches as tia starts changing the radio station again, her fingers never leaving the touch screen as if that was the problem. But the second she lands on her favourite 80’s classics station and is moving her fingers away it changes. Skipping through stations again until Despacito is once again filling the car.
It’s probably lucky that they’re at another red light and that there’s no one behind them because her eyes widen and she’s suddenly saying words in Spanish that he knows he shouldn’t know and is pulling over to the side of the road.
“We have to get out! The car is being possessed! Out, out Carlos! Come on!” Her seat belt is off and her door is open before Carlos even has a chance to process what’s happening. The notebook from the back is pushed in front of his face and he tilts his head a little to side to read Reggie’s familiar handwriting,
Too far?
“Maybe,” he whispers back, taking the notebook out of the ghost's hand as he starts to get out of the car, plucking the pencil out of the metal spirals and making a note about not pushing tia in a moving vehicle and to wait until after they’ve gone shopping first.
She’s got her phone pressed to ear when he joins her on the sidewalk, pacing up and down. Carlos is pretty sure there’s going to be a family dinner story time in their near future.
//
Luke watches as Carlos sets his tape recorder up, idly plucking out a half finished tune on his guitar in order to be seen and heard. He doesn’t really get the other boys interest in figuring out their ghostly state of being. The same way he doesn’t really care about finding answers to all of Alex’s questions.
They ate some bad street dogs. They died. Julie brought them back and then she saved them a second time. They can play music and sometimes be seen. He already has all the answers he needs and it’s two words: Julie Molina.
Would it be nice to know what the black room was? Sure. Did he sometimes wonder why they could be seen but other ghosts couldn't? Sometimes. Did he want answers? Only if someone was going to give them to him without having to do the work. Was he going to sit here and answer all of Carlos’ questions because it was important to him and to the others? Fuck yeah he was.
“Does that think pick up our voices even if we’re not playing and not near Julie?” He nods at the recorder on the table after Carlos hits a button.
“Yeah! It’s so cool too. You sound like, all static-y and I have to listen really hard sometimes because your voices fade in and out but they’re there!”
Okay, Luke can admit that is pretty cool, “That’s wicked. Maybe we should start using that to communicate instead of writing.” He was really sick of people commenting on his handwriting.
“Dude that’s genius! It would be like leaving each other voice notes!” He gestures in the air with his pencil the same way Julie does when she’s realised the issue with a verse and Luke smiles softly. He doesn’t know what voice notes are, but he’s glad he could contribute to the communication issue.
“What questions have you got for me then little dude?” He raises an eyebrow at Carlos as he flips through his notebook.
//
When he’d first knocked Alex down Willie never thought it would lead to him sitting in the Molina’s family living room, a whiteboard resting on his knees as a twelve year old shows him bar graphs and pie charts of information on ghosts.
There was probably some kind of domino-butterfly effect going on that had led him here. But he’s too busy trying to fit all his know ghost knowledge onto a whiteboard so Carlos can fill in the gaps in his knowledge.
Over the years Willie has met a lot of lifers, has interacted with a handful at the HGC but he’s never met a family like the Molina’s. Who found out ghosts were real and instead of running, or trying to profit off of them, had just...welcomed them into the family. Arms wide and hearts open.
And more than that, here was Carlos trying to get answers to questions that none of them really had an answer too.
“Black room, yes or no?” Carlos asks, holding up a flash card and a clothes peg, ready to add it to the line of string stretching across the room. It was already littered with other cards in an order that Willie really didn’t understand but seemed to make perfect sense to the younger boy and Reggie.
Not for me, or anyone I asked at the club, he scribbles down, turning to the board around.
“Just like we thought,” he nods to himself, taking two steps to the left and reaching up to attach the card, “An anomaly.” he whispers it to himself and Willie has to bite his lip to stop from smiling before remembering that Carlos can’t actually see him.
“Hey,” Alex’s voice from the doorway drags his gaze away from the lifer and the smile he’d been trying to stop spreads across his face, “How’s it going?”
“I don’t think we’re even half way through,” he chuckles, gesturing with one hand at the stack of flashcards and the charts he hasn’t even seen yet. “Do you understand this system?”
The exasperated laugh that leaves Alex’s lips is answer enough before he’s even shaking his head, strands of blonde hair dipping into his eyes and Willie wants to reach to move away, “Not a clue. They’ve tried to explain it to us but it makes zero sense to anyone but them.”
“Hey, Alex, stop distracting him, we’re working here!” Carlos’ voice makes him jump, head turning back to where he’s standing with his arms crossed and shaking his head in disappointment in the vague direction of where Alex is standing.
“Wait, can he see you?” Willie frowns, mind trying to remember if he knew this or not.
“No, he’s just really good at sensing us these days,” Alex sighs, but there’s a fond look in his eyes as he looks at Carlos, “He says it’s his ghost powers kicking in from how often he hangs out with Reggie and from all the failed teleportation experiments.”
“The failed what now?”
“Oh, you’ll find out. I think it’s section 7?” Alex grins, pushing off from where he’d been leaning against the doorway and waving.
Willie turns back to Carlos feeling a little more confused than he had minutes ago but also much more intrigued about teleportation experiments. And if he could help get some answers for any of the many questions Alex had, that was cool too.

Carlos Molina’s Guide to Ghosting. So you became a ghost, huh?
(working title, subject to change)
By Carlos Molina, with special thanks to Reggie Peters and Willie Skateboard.
1st Edition.
Dedicated to Alex Mercer, so he can stop asking so many questions. We’re working on it buddy.
1. Tangibility
They can walk through anything (except my sister now, reasons still unclear).
Works especially well with walls, doors and locked vaults (see exhibit a)
When they walk through people it “allows them to get a feel for the person” – Reggie Peters. “It’s weird” – Alex Mercer. No comment from Luke Patterson as he was too busy staring at Julie.
2. Souls
Objects can be attached to their souls.
Still unclear if it has to be an object that they were close to in life, or if they can attach their souls to any object once a ghost.
Experiments with Reggie Peters are still ongoing. Updates will follow.
3. Being Seen
Can be seen by “lifers*” when they play music with Julie.
This is the first rule which only applies to our ghosts.
They can be heard when they play music without Julie. This is also unclear as to why, working theory is “Our music is just so awesome it transcends deaths!” – Luke Patterson.
Mr Willie Skateboard was quick to point out it’s “weird” and “ghosts aren’t supposed to be seen by lifers.”
4. Touching
Our ghosts can now touch Julie. The biggest change in their afterlife.
Still no explanation for it. Experiments are ongoing (see exhibit b)
Have witnessed Julie hugging the air many times only for Alex or Willie to appear. Same with hand holding. (see exhibit c for dads reaction)
5. Magic
Some ghosts have powers and abilities.
Willie* can control different types of technology. Appears to work best with cars. This we believe correlates with who a ghost dies.
In our expedition to test his skills he skipped through 15 different radio stations of Tia’s car until he found one playing despacito. Test was a success. Tia does think her car is haunted now however.
6. ???
There was a dark room.
All other ghosts interviewed had never heard of it before.
All our ghosts agreed it was weird and creepy.
We are choosing to pretend it didn’t happen.
Working theory: a hole in time that they fell through. Must find a way to test.
7. Teleporting
part 1)
Ghosts can teleport wherever they want in the world.
Only the most powerful can teleport a lifer with them (will keep attempting)
part b)
Our ghosts can pinpoint Julie’s exact location wherever she may be in the world.
Will be helpful if she is ever kidnapped, Julie however wishes they would stop using said power to find her in gym class.
“I already have find my friend activated” – Flynn had to say on the matter.
part c)
Julie can summon the boys to her if she concentrates hard enough. Came in handy when an evil magician tried to kidnap them.
Also possibly how they escaped the dark room, no way to prove or deny this as dad won’t let me eat a bad hotdog to become a ghost.
Working theory: magic of music and family
