1/20/25 - ‘Home at the Bar’
I was looking through photos last night to post after a Facebook argument and I came across this one in an old album. (Don’t worry - I rage posted my “ammo” and then I deleted Facebook and my other Meta apps, even the “new TikTok”). This photo though, a favorite of mine and one I’ve seen a hundred times, had a new edge. Me at the bar, sitting with my father and a few of his buddies the morning after a large party. I fit right in - bellied up to the bar with my baseball cap repping the band from last nights party, Beauty and the Beast T-shirt, sipping ginger ale from a rocks glass. Something strikes me differently this time. What’s that edge and wild in my eyes. Is this a normal childhood? I thought so, and loved every minute of it. At least for a little while.
I never knew, at least not then, all the history and stories time holds. Later, I still didn’t fully understand. It takes constant reflection, spurred by little reminders - photos, journals, stories, conversations - to try and understand. To make sense of where you’ve come from and how it all came to be this way. I don’t think I will ever fully understand it.
I always asked myself, “what happened to me?”, “why was I like this?”. Every stage of my life, I’ve gone searching, trying to reflect back on the past. I scour my mother’s endless photo albums, home videos on VHS, digital photo files, disposable camera film, my old laptops from college and beyond, smart-phone camera rolls. I finger through old notebooks, journals, scraps of paper, notes apps, social media posts - checking dates, events - re-reading all of my thoughts, literal dreams and ramblings. All the while collecting and trying to piece together something, something that will trigger the memory into action. Forcing synapses to fire that might help me to understand the patterns and cycles from my past in order to better navigate what’s to come. To have some sort of upper hand of wisdom, of experience.
For what though? To make it through another year with less struggle? To just merely survive? I don’t dare say “to thrive” - what the fuck does that even mean?
It doesn’t appear I’ve been thriving, but I have made it thus far. 36, mother, home owner, teacher, gardener. Nothing extraordinary - but another life nonetheless. Hopefully one with meaning, and purpose, and value. One that can provide something of importance to someone else in this world.
Many times in the past 36 years I have stopped to reflect on “life thus far” or the “current state of things” (personally and in the grander scheme of things) - often doing so in times of turmoil. I’ve found myself thinking about the little girl pictured above and wondered - “is this how she envisioned her life playing out?” - the contents of the photo above point to “yes” - but the society she grew up in most definitely had me answering, “no”, time and time again. If I looked closely however, scoured the pages of photo albums and journal entries - could I possibly see what I would have needed to know. The knowledge needed to make different choices. What was in my control, what wasn’t? The age old questions of Nature vs Nurture.
I grew up in a loving, 2 parent, middle/working class home. My father, a high school drop-out turned “entrepreneur” and my mother, the stabilizing peacemaker, became a force to be reckoned with. My sisters and I grew up in the hospitality industry, catering to wealthy summer folk, locals, and everything in between. A clear divide of worlds, that became even clearer the older I got.
Still I come back to the same types of questions - What was different about me, if anything? What made me lash out at such an early age and not my two older sisters? What started my spiral into a world of drugs that would last for over 20 years? What caused my emotional instability? Why was I allowed to get away with the things I did? Why did I lose my mother and father? How much damage have I done to myself in all these years? What pulled me through, and not others? Will I make it another year? Another 5? 10? How do I protect my child from life’s events? Do we need the sorrows and pain to make the joys meaningful? Is that what life is? Am I really any different in the end? Do these questions have answers - do they even fucking matter?
I don’t know, but at least there’s a lot of good stories to tell…here goes nothing.

@prouddov
The little bookshop on 471 Angell Street was his favorite store;; it was small but not tiny (and definitely not as overwhelming as that one store in the city center with its 3 floors full of tourists and students), had a good selection of various genres, and employed salesmen and -women that knew when to not approach you. Plus the security camera was fake -- James really didn’t need his face recorded anywhere at all.
Today it was crowded. He stopped dead in his tracks after entering, already preparing himself to just get out of here again but then he forced himself to push through. Crowds. That was -- a normal phenomenon. He needed to get used to it at some point. He pulled his baseball cap lower, though, and then scurried over to the section with the notebooks and calendars and planners. In the beginning he’d written in simple, spiral-bound notebooks with flimsy paper, that now lay at the bottom of a drawer and should never see the light of day again, preferably. Most of them didn’t make sense, anyway. The endless and invaluable wisdom of the internet had told him, though, that he should treat himself nice, indulge in pretty and enjoyable things. That was easier done when it came to tangible things (vs. mental stuff) and he’d found out that he enjoyed writing in very expensive notebooks with nice, thick paper and a colorful binding. Using a fountain pen.
Picking a new notebook was easy because he’d already decided the last time which one to take. The main problem was the waiting line between him and the checkout. James eyed it more closely: seemed as if the man sitting behind a desk was writing in books for the people. And they all carried the same book with the same cover. He edged closer, snatched one off a pile and quickly scanned the cover.
Oh. A science fiction novel. And, apparently, the guy everyone was waiting to meet was the author of the novel. James checked the blurb again and found his interest sparked. There was already a book in his apartment waiting for him, but ---------- he could get the author’s signature, like everyone else. That was a very normal thing to do, being a -- fan. Having a book with a signature. That would make the book special.
Treat yourself to nice things. Fuck yes, he totally would.
Hugging the novel and his new notebook to his chest, he got in line (trying to get as much space between himself and the person in front of him as possible without attracting attention). While waiting Bucky noticed that some people where waving their hands around or slipping pieces of paper across the desk to the man. He needed embarrassingly long for a former assassin and highly valuable asset to ascertain they used ASL. He needed even longer to recognize he knew some of those signs (which was probably because he kind of saw them the wrong way round). That didn’t come as a surprise. He only learned yesterday he could speak Spanish when he’d heard a mother yell at her son in the supermarket. Hydra. Who the fuck could tell what else they’d done to his brain.
Fidgeting a little, he focused on what he could maybe sign. It would be nice to see his name in the book. There was no sign for Bucky, though. He nearly broke out into laughter when noting he could sign weapon and it would suit perfectly fine, hu? In the end, he got a pen out of his jacket’s pocket and wrote BUCKY into his new notebook. When it was his turn, he shuffled forward and put the novel down, using his (gloved) hands to sign Can you write and then opening the notebook to his name. He wanted to add ‘please’, but of fucking course Hydra hadn’t taught him that. He flailed, then said “please”, voice gruff from disuse.

Star vs Evil - Chapter 7
Tumblr media
Tom looked across the long banquet table at Star, sitting on the other end. He diligently hunted for the largest hellboar he could find and overwatched the chefs create their meal tonight.
Toffee said any effort is never wasted, even if we don’t perceive the desired results. Plant the seeds and they will grow.
Star picked at her food and sighed. She looked up across the long table to Tom who gave her a reassuring smile. She returned the smile, but Tom’s faded. He could tell it was half-hearted. He had hoped she’d turn to the normal, bubbly girl he’s in love with, but with her moping about all the time… it felt like she was his prisoner.
“Star… it’s been a week.” Tom said as he mirrored her fidgeting.
“I know, I know.” Star sighed and pushed her food away. Every time her gaze connected with his, she would turn away and focus on something else.
“What do you want to do tonight? There’s going to be a wrestling match later. I know how much you love to watch mindlessly violent sports. Last month we had two dismemberments!” Tom said with glee. He hoped he could find some way to turn this around.
“Meh,” Star said with a sigh and absentmindedly changed her nail colors with her wand. She didn’t even look at the food he spent all day lamenting over. A part of him wanted to scream at her insensitivity, but he’s trying to move beyond that side of him.
“We can go hunting?” Tom said, brandishing all forms of killing instruments from out of nowhere.
“Meh,” Star replied and poked at her plate again, returning her wand with her free hand to her purse.
“What is going on? You were so happy to be here!” Tom lamented.
“No, Tom. I’m not happy here. I’m here because it’s the right thing to do.” Star snapped. She kicked her chair out and stormed off outside the castle.
“Star…” Tom whispered, his outstretched hand grasping at the retreating form of Star.
OoOoO
“Sir… the Butterfly has left the nest!” Buffrog reported to a floating bat eyeball.
“Thank you, commence the attack,” Toffee said from the viewing room. He stood next to Ludo, his stone face hiding any thoughts he may be having.
“I...I should be out there commanding my troops!” Ludo exclaimed. “My years of tactical analysis is going to be invaluable.”
“I understand, sir, but you’re too advanced to be of any help to your troops, This is like a chess game, each piece has its part. Just watch,” he said, revealing a smile full of teeth. Ludo nodded in excitement, ignoring the little voice in the back of his head warning him of danger.
OoOoO
Marco curled up in bed with the covers over his head. What were King and Queen Butterfly thinking? They expected him to be her knight? All this time… it wasn’t a coincidence that he was her host house? The layers of betrayal felt like suffocating weights pressing against his chest, one pound at a time.
The sound of space unicorn erupted from under his pillow. Halfheartedly, he checked the caller ID. He didn’t want to talk to Jackie right now.
Marco shot up in bed and answered the phone. “Star?”
“Hey… Marco,” She said. It was her ‘confused and needs advice’ tone, Marco noted. He should run down and make some s’mores, that always helps the ‘confused and needs advice’ Star.
Marco punched his pillow. No! He will not start that! He’s not her protector or her knight. He was a normal kid going to school.
“I’m… sorta busy.” Marco said, his chest tightened as he said those words to her. God, he wanted to see her!
“Oh… I’m sorry… I’ll just…” Star mumbled.
“No! Wait!” Marco shouted before Star finished. “I… I mean, I got some time, what’s up?”
“I’m… just having second thoughts,” Star mumbled. “But… enough about me. How are you and Jackie? We haven’t talked in like a week… and I just am going for a walk around Lava Lake… and thought of you… I mean though I’d catch up with you… since ya know… walking, and bored… that sorta thing.”
“Star… Your Mom and Dad were here.” Marco said dryly.
“Oh?” She said innocently. “And… how were they?”
“I found out a few things,” Marco said, he wanted to scream and yell but didn’t want to anger Star and have her hang up on him.
“And… you found out how awesome of a friend you are and they are in no way holding you responsible for my rash and uncontrollable decision to run away?” Star said. He could hear her grinning from ear to ear, anticipating what sort of trouble she may be in.
“I found out why you came to live with me,” Marco said.
“What?” Star asked, “I… don’t understand.”
“Don’t pay dumb, Star,” Marco said. “I was chosen before you even came to earth. I was supposed to be groomed into a Bach...knight or something and move to Mewnie when I was older. When you took the crown.”
“I’ve never heard of such a thing. A Bach...knight?” Star said and suddenly gasped with some sort of realization. “I can’t believe them… That’s so like Mom!”
“So… you honestly didn’t know?” Marco asked.
“No. Of course not!” Star said. “I love it over there and I’d never ask you to…”
“Ask me to what?” Marco asked. “Star? Hello?”
Looking down at his phone, it showed the call was dropped.
Marco’s hand shook as he sent text after text, call after call only to get no reply.
“MOM!” Marco screamed as he tore out of his room. “Please tell me you have a way to get ahold of King Butterfly!”
OoOoO
Star looked at the shattered cell phone in her hand. It was cleanly broke in two. She winced in pain as she noticed an arrow sticking out of the back of her hand, the shaft halfway up, and a green stone arrowhead inches from her face...
“M...Marco?” She asked the destroyed cell phone. Her mind hadn’t caught up with what had happened. A part of her was mildly curious at the green ooze coming from the stone arrowhead.
Star looked around. Slowly Ludo’s army appeared, surrounding her. Instinctively she reached for her wand and gasped in pain. The arrow was still in her palm. She fumbled with her purse and reached in with her left hand, pulling out the source of her powers.
“Narwhal Blast!” She screamed, The rainbow filled attacking narwhals fired as usual but missed their target.
Ludo’s crew surrounded her and slowly closed in the circle. Star fired a few more missed shots and turned her focus to her dominant hand.
Star tried to pull the arrow through but almost blacked out from the lightning pain that shot through her arm.  Her breathing was labored, a mix of panic and pain. She cast her wand about wildly, not even attempting any real spells. She hoped Tom was on his way and glad Marco was safe. She didn’t want him to see her like this.
OoOoO
“And.. she just stormed off!” Tom said to his therapist. Toffee nodded and wrote in his notebook.
“And.. how did that make you feel?” Toffee asked
“Like I should go after her!” He replied. There was a knock on the door. “I’m BUSY!”
“Should we stop?” Toffee asked,
“No, It’s nothing. Just some underlings want something. They know not to bother me in here.” Tom said and sat on the reclining sofa that he sat in front of the communication mirror.
“Now, what would happen if you did?” Toffee asked, picking up from his last question.
“She’d say I was smothering her and get mad,” Tom replied, he slumped down on his chair and let out a defeated sigh.
“Exactly… Let's work on those feelings.”
OoOoO
“Tom? Marco?” Star shouted. Her voice cracked from the pain. She felt a knot in her throat and despair claw at her chest. “Anyone? I need help!”
Star lightly jogged away from the minions that attacked her. A full sprint would waste energy, and she needed to conserve what she had. None of the minions had attacked her yet, the massive presence and their slow approach were driving her mad. She was being engulfed in hopelessness, knowing she was powerless against them. The more she ran, the more appeared. She realized too late, that she was being corralled.
She needed someone to help her… she couldn’t do this herself. She thought she could, but she could barely move her hand, the pain had moved up her arm and was now at her shoulder. Was the arrow poisoned?
Desperation overtook her. She charged the nearest monster and screamed. The giant chicken moved aside, and her kick whizzed through the air, connecting to nothing. Losing her balance, she slid on the hard rock that overlooked the lake of molten fire. The group reformed around her and closed in on her. She backed away, brandishing her wand, firing shot after shot with her left hand, missing each one as they slowly closed in.
As Star backed away, her foot slipped. She knelt down to steady herself and looked behind her. She was up against the edge of the magma lake.
The creatures in the army chuckled, and the sound of a tiny slow clap rang in her ears. She could see some of the monsters part ways to reveal Ludo clapping in triumph.
“Nowhere left to run… Butterfly!” Ludo said in triumph. “Now… give me the wand, or your goose is cooked!”
“Ludo… this doesn’t mean you won!” Star said she tried to muster up any intimidation she had left.
“Look around! No one is showing up to save you!” Ludo chuckled. “You’re incapacitated, and there’s no way you can win! I mean… the only thing you could do is…”
Ludo covered his beak, realizing the mistake he made.
Star’s face wore a wide grin.
“Oh… you want my wand?” She said. Her legs shook as she stood back up. “Fine… go get it!”
“Wait! No! Star! Can we talk about this!” Ludo screamed in a panic! “NO! STOP HER!”
Star mimicked a baseball pitch Marco taught her and threw the wand with all her might.
Everyone stood in silent reverence as they watched the spiraling wand land in the lake of magma. Slowly it became encased in molten rock and disappeared from view.
“NO!” Ludo screamed and lunged forward. BuffFrog grabbed him with one hand and held him back. “No! I can still get it! I can get it! Someone go in and get it!”
“Sir, It’s gone,” BuffFrog said somberly. “It’s… It’s over.”
“NO! NO! NO!” Ludo wailed. “I was so close! I almost won!”
Star fell on her side, breathing had become increasingly difficult. The frantic Ludo paused and looked at Star’s collapse figure.
“Star?” Ludo asked. He rubbed his hands gingerly and motioned BuffFrog to set him down. The maniacal look on his face changed to one of concern. He walked up to her and looked over her body’s labored breathing. Black veins crept out from the arrow wound and slowly inched up her wrist. “Hey… is she going to be okay?”
“She was shot with poison arrow… of course, she’s not okay.” BuffFrog replied with a shrug.
“Who said to use a poison one?” Ludo asked that voice in the back of his head screamed louder, warning him of danger. “The idea was to disable her hand so she couldn’t aim!”
“Toffee instructed,” BuffFrog replied with a shrug.
Before Ludo could say anything more, the ground around them erupted. Star’s vision blurred, but she could make out a red hoodie rushing forward surrounded by Mewnie guards. The monster army scattered and escaped into the undead forest surrounding them.
“Star! Star!” Marco screamed. He was so far away. She tried to reach out to him. He raced over to her and cradled her in his arms. “I’m here… god, I’m sorry. I’ll never leave your side. This is all my fault.”
“Arrow… poisoned.” Star mumbled, indicating her injured hand. With that, consciousness escaped into visions of space unicorn videos involving laser puppies.
OoOoO
Star woke up in her room. She felt disoriented. It wasn’t Tom’s castle or Marco’s house. Was she back on Mewnie?
She sat up and winced. She looked down at her hand. It was bandaged, but black streaks were running up her arm.
“It won’t go away,” Marco said from the corner. He couldn’t quite hide the crack in his voice. His eyes are puffy and red. Was he crying?
“M… Marco?” Star asked rubbing her head. The events were fuzzy after her hand was skewered with the arrow.
“Yeah. I’m here,” he said and sat on the foot of her bed and held her good hand.
“I was so scared.” She whimpered and burst into tears. She never felt so powerless before.
“So was I.” He said and pulled her to him. She laid in his lap, and he rubbed her head. “I’m here now. It will be okay.”
“No… no, it won’t” Star sobbed. “It’s gone.”
“What’s gone?” Marco asked.
“The wand… I… I threw it in the lava lake. It was my only choice. If I died, then Ludo would have gotten it.” Star sobbed. She looked at her bandaged hand and winced in pain.
“They… are looking for a way to stop whatever was on that arrow,” Marco said. “I can’t believe Ludo would be this dirty. I mean, I don’t know the guy, but there seemed to be an underlying respect for you when we fought. There was a line he wouldn’t cross you know?”
“I heard him say he didn’t know about the poison,” Star mumbled. “BuffFrog said someone named Toffee made the decision.”
“Well… no matter what happens, we’ll get you fixed up.” Marco said and rubbed her temples. “Just rest knowing this is all over. We’ll figure out where to go from here, but without the wand, no one is going to be coming after you.”
“Yeah…” Star said, and wrapped her good arm around Marco’s waist. She closed her eyes and felt her consciousness slipping away. “Marco…” She whispered as she drifted off to sleep. She swore she saw Tom standing in the doorway, but she must be imagining things. She was with Marco and knew everything will be alright.
OoOoO
Toffee stood at the edge of the magma lake and looked at his pocket watch.
“He’s late.” Toffee said.
“TOFFEE!” Ludo screamed as he emerged from the forest. “What’s the big idea!”
Toffee cocked an eyebrow at Ludo and turned back to overlook the molten lake.
“Why did you poison Star?” Ludo shrieked. “There’s a line you don’t cross when trying to destroy your enemies!”
“Do you realize how stupid that sounds?” Toffee grimaced. “The problem you have is that you played fair. This whole thing was a big game between you two. It was… so annoying to watch.”
“You better change that tone.” Ludo shouted, “You don’t know who you’re messing with.”
Toffee checked his watch and removed from inside his jacket a large plastic glove. Looking at the shoreline, he nodded to himself.
“I wish to make an announcement to all those following chicken head here.” Toffee said everyone looked at the Big Giant Chicken. “No… I meant… god, you all are stupid. Ludo! Those who follow Ludo.”
“What is this? Some sort of mutiny!?” Ludo demanded and ran at Toffee.
Toffee took a step forward and extended his leg. Ludo flew over the crowd and passed a pair of trees. BuffFrog raised two hands in the air, signaling the shot was good.
“Now… as you can well assume, I’m taking over. This can be an easy or a hard transition or…” Toffee explained.
“But… what about the wand?” Someone asked.
“I’m glad you mentioned it.” Toffee said and stepped aside. Crab Claws emerged from the molten lava, encased in a lead suit. Around the edges glowed from the heat and pressure. Gripped in his claw, dripping with molten rock was the Butterfly wand of power.
Toffee grabbed the wand with his gloved hand and grinned.
“Any Questions?”
There was a shriek of anger from behind the group. Ludo erupted from under someone’s legs, holding a sharpened stick, and charged at Toffee.
“I HAVE WORKED FOR YEARS FOR THAT WAND!” Ludo screamed. His little legs pushed his tiny frame forward, building momentum for his attack.
Toffee sighed, rolled his eyes, and held out the wand. A sparkling light erupted from it, engulfing Ludo.
A stone statue of the tiny ruler remained.
“Let's head back to my castle and I’ll tell you of the next stage of my plan.” Toffee said and cut open an interdimensional portal. “I’ve ordered pizza and ice cream for the party.”
Everyone erupted in cheers and barreled through the interdimensional portal. BuffFrog was the last one. He was holding the stone remains of his former master. Toffee raised an eyebrow at him.
“Wanted to put it on mantle. Would make great hat rack.” BuffFrog said and shrugged.
Toffee shrugged in response and let him pass.
As the portal closed after them. Silence filled the undead forest, occasionally interrupted by a glug from the molten lake.

“You should have seen it.”
Fictober 2018 - Day 18
Yeah you could be Someone special You've got bright in your brains and Lightning in your veins You'll go higher then they've ever gone In you I see Someone special You've got fire in your eyes and When you realize You'll go further then we've ever gone (look) Just turn it on
~ Miracles (Coldplay)
Sasuke has been in Izuku’s room a hundred times at this point. They’re thirteen now, they’ve been friends since second grade, and they basically live in each others’ houses by now. Everything in his house is familiar to Izuku, and everything in Izuku’s is familiar to him. Sasuke can always notice if something new appears, always asks about it or admires it out loud. That said, the Midoriya household is generally very constant—steadfast, predictable. Bargain interior decorations, as Mrs. Midoriya has scruples, and more practical items than anything else. With… the exception of Izuku’s room. Every long now and again, like today, Sasuke feels the need to stop in the doorway and let his gaze drift over the overwhelming amount of red, white, blue and yellow plastered in every available bit of wall or shelf space.
The sheer volume of All Might memorabilia sometimes hits him square between the eyes and makes him feel like he needs to blink, rapidly, for a minute or two. Or several.
Sasuke shakes the compulsion away and sets his backpack down next to Izuku’s yellow one. More yellow… I forget he uses the color so much. Izuku’s already on his way back out into the main living space, squeezing past Sasuke when both of them occupy the space in the doorframe for a brief second.
“We were almost late,” Izuku huffs with obvious relief. “We made it back just in time!” He scampers off down the hallway and calls, louder here than he ever is at school. “Ready, Mom!”
With a smirk that holds more fondness than Sasuke intends, he follows after his friend.
Whenever he comes over after a long school day, it’s become a tradition of sorts to help Mrs. Midoriya make dinner. Sasuke’s never minded; not when he’s adding to her work with his presence. It’s always seemed fair that he contribute for himself. Mrs. Midoriya turns on some music—usually oldies; her music tastes are charmingly outdated, and growing up with this musical influence made it rub off on Izuku—and then she’ll assign each of the boys a portion of the cooking. Usually something simple and straightforward, like chopping vegetables, or cooking the rice, boiling noodles. She always handles the more difficult tasks, and still finds time to give them guidance with their tasks.
Then, when they’re all finished and the food is steaming and ready to serve, they all sit around the table and Mrs. Midoriya asks them how their day was. About their classes, their favorite part of the day, anything special that happened. They fill her in, give her details, leave some out—mostly Izuku refrains from any mention of whatever torment he had to endure that day at the hands of the sheep-headed masses who follow the example set by the likes of Bakugou Katsuki. Yes, today goes by much the same way every other day does.
When they finish eating, as usual, they load up the dishwasher together and, once it’s running, the boys are free to retreat to Izuku’s room. Today’s a Friday; tomorrow is Saturday and Sasuke’s gotten permission to stay the night for the first time in a while, so long as they finish their homework. They had spent the whole of the walk home from school coming up with things they could do this time.
Usually, they study, they talk Heroes, they watch YouTube videos, they talk more Heroes. Izuku brainstorms his Hero costume, Sasuke brainstorms his tech.
Again, though, Sasuke finds himself pausing a minute to look over the posters on Izuku’s walls… the figurines on his shelf… the notebooks stacked on his desk. Then he looks to his friend, who’s nose is still buried in his textbook as he does what their mothers requested, and can’t help but think…
He doesn’t need a Quirk.
Nobody else seems willing to tell him that though. Izuku’s told him (and only him) of what his mother said to him the day they found out about his lack of powers. And Sasuke’s witnessed first hand the way he’s treated in class… sometimes by the teachers themselves.
It’s true, despite his somewhat mediocre existence here at home, Izuku’s not ‘normal,’ not by a long shot. He is... unique. Fun. Outstanding, even. So he doesn’t have this One Thing that eighty percent of the population does. Sasuke understands that, understands it’s uncommon. What he doesn’t understand is why, exactly, that’s looked at as a negative thing.
Izuku has plenty of other amazing things he can do, even things he’s better at than most people.
Like homework. Izuku tears through it like a starving man inhales a loaf of bread. Every time, too. He’s as fast as Sasuke, and his grades are just as good. Midoriya Izuku is smarter than the average person.
Once they finish their studies up like good students aiming for futures in Hero work, they dive to the computer. As per tradition, the first thing they watch is Izuku’s old favorite. The classic throwback, of one of All Might’s debut rescues.
After that, they get lost in suggested views, allowing themselves to spiral deep down the YouTube rabbit hole… for science. Izuku takes notes, as usual.
Except… it’s really not normal in a general sense, is it? Sasuke’s never met anyone as dedicated to Heroism as Izuku.
Even if the likes of Bakugou Katsuki would try to insist otherwise.
Nah, Bakugou Katsuki is basic. Average. The usual. Boring. Not to mention annoying as h***, and a narcissist to boot. Why does someone outstanding like Izuku waste his efforts on somebody like that? Sasuke just shakes his head.
“Hm?” Uh oh, Izuku notices. Wait, Sasuke actually shook his head? Whoops… “What’s wrong?”
Sasuke blinks against the glare of light from the screen. He… well, now he needs to think of something to actually say. Something useful, thought-provoking, since they only do this to better their instincts and understanding of their chosen craft…
“I feel like we’ve seen all these already,” he points out. And it’s true. Everything they’ve been watching, he’s almost positive they’ve watched at least once before, if not more often. He knows what’s going to happen before it does, and as much as he does like these Heroes and their escapades captured for all to see via some idiotic bystander’s camera phone, he can’t say he’s feeling ‘the usual’ so much tonight.
Not when he’s being hounded by constructs of society like some middle-aged philosopher during a full moon.
“Hmmm…” Izuku scrolls away from the video right when Death Arms is mid-uppercut, searching for… something. Anything, Sasuke supposes. Something they haven’t seen before. Then suddenly, he sits straight, face lighting up as a thought occurs. “Oh! Did you see what happened just the other day?”
Sasuke raises an eyebrow. “What other day?”
“Oh, I dunno… it was, like, last weekend? Over in Minato, All Might took down a crazy villain. I got to watch from the street corner!”
“I heard something about that from the gossips in class, but no, I haven’t seen anything.” Sasuke shifts in his seat, tucking one foot underneath him. “We were visiting my grandma. She doesn’t have internet.”
Izuku’s eyebrows jump. “No inter—gosh, how can you even function without—”
“Nobody knows.”
With a quick headshake, Izuku hunches over the keyboard and lets his fingers fly. “Lemme see if I can find some footage; there’s gotta be something up by now.”
Indeed, when he searches ‘all might minato fight’ a great selection of results come up. Several have high view counts but are from months past, but the top result is from just a few days ago. It’s title reads ‘CRAZY All Might battle vs ROCK MONSTER (actuall footage).’
“Ah, a grammarian,” Sasuke murmurs with a fair dose of sarcasm.
Izuku giggles, but abruptly silences himself as the video begins to play. A click and it fills the screen, expanding the blurry view of a city street, from the perspective of a phone that appears to be bouncing. From the wind and puffing sounds, not to mention the violent jerking of the footage, the person holding it is running, down the sidewalk, and comes upon a crowd of people at the corner. Several others have their phones out and over their heads.
Halfway down the block, visible once the camera’s jittering stills somewhat, a massive villain made of stone looms, swinging its arm like a giant mace at the spangley hero that’s currently launching himself through said villain’s personal space. The bystanders are all murmuring, some shouting, cheering, the guy behind the camera is uttering expletives of pure awe and wonder, and above it all, All Might’s raucous laughter booms over the rumble of heavy rock.
“IS THAT ALL YOU’VE GOT, BIG GUY!?” the hero trumpets just before he delivers a Washington Smash to the underside of the rock monster’s jaw. The crowd goes wild. Sasuke leans forward in his seat, trying to see through the camera blurs despite knowing there’s no way he’ll be able to get a better look at the action.
Then the moron drops his phone, there’s a harried curse and the crunch of plastic on concrete, the hushed fumble of fingers, and the video ends.
Izuku whimpers a little. “Dang it, that was so short…”
“You could probably describe what happened to me better than any video.” Easing out of his investment, Sasuke leans back in his chair and levels his friend with a steady, expectant stare.
Come on. Do your thing.
Izuku laughs, rubbing the back of his neck. “I dunno, probably not, but… I can try!”
With a sudden vigor belying his previous hesitation, he then launches into a detailed eye-witness account of a rock monster that tried to attack the Number One Hero’s agency building like a total idiot and of how that Number One Hero launched right out of said building to engage with the monster himself. He lays the scene out play by play, describing each of All Might’s moves and counter moves with a level of specificity that’s more than enough to convince Sasuke that it happened exactly as Izuku tells it.
“He had the thing ambling around in circles!” he says, hands splaying animatedly in his retelling. “He was so fast! The rock villain brought his arm down like a pile-driver and All Might just swung off his arm—not an ounce of fear! For every time the villain missed, All Might would land a hit like it was nothing. And he was laughing the whole time! The rock villain got so frustrated, he didn’t even know which way to look. Then All Might finished him off with a Texas Smash that threw him a whole block down the street! You should have seen it!”
Sasuke doubts Izuku notices that whenever he talks about All Might, he looks just as fearless. Whether that makes All Might a crutch… or just means Izuku’s that passionate and dedicated to this dream, Sasuke’s not sure but he’d like to believe it’s the latter. He’s used to being surrounded by… well, depression. Grim reality. That’ll happen when the brother you looked up to and idolized (much like how Izuku looks up to All Might, actually…) turns out to be a psycho killer and takes your Heroic father away from you and widows your mother.
But Izuku… it’s like, no matter what he’s been through, he can still smile and fanboy like this—without fear. Sure, he hasn’t been through quite what Sasuke has… but that’s good, he supposes. Better to be average in that area.
Izuku meets his gaze and stills his laughter, looking a bit confused at the fact that Sasuke, as he now realizes, is staring.
“What?” Izuku blinks. “What’s that look for?”
Sasuke snorts, and his answer comes a bit more easily this time. “You really like All Might, don’t you?”
“I… I mean…” Izuku glances around his room, at the computer screen, and finally at his lap, and a small smile creeps across his lips, milder and more hesitant than the grin that had beamed from his face just seconds before. “Well, yeah. He’s… he’s the reason I want to become a Hero in the first place. He’s why I keep… trying. Hoping. I just… I can only dream that maybe, some day… I can be even a fraction of the Hero he is. He’s… he’s extraordinary.”
“Hm…” Sasuke follows the path of Izuku’s previous glance. All Might’s smiling face surrounds them, to an almost unnerving degree, his presence radiating from the walls. And he thinks… that if Izuku has these in here not only as a shrine to his ultimate inspiration, but also as a ward to keep the poisonous barbs from the outside World of Mediocrity from sticking to him once he crosses the threshold of this space… that makes All Might cooler than any villain fight.
And it makes Izuku pretty d*** cool too.
“Yeah, I guess he is.” Sasuke returns his attention back to his friend, who’s staring now at the notebook he has on the desk top between them. He’s opened it to his sketch page, where his concept drawings for his Hero costume are. Sasuke taps the page. “He’d be cooler without the rabbit ears, though.”
Izuku gasps like Sasuke just uttered the bitterest of heresies and he needs a cross to shove in his face or something. “No, the ears are iconic!!”
“Izuku, the guy’s the definition of an icon, and I doubt he’d be any less of one if he nixxed the weird haircut.”
“Noooo, he needs the haircut. It makes him approachable.”
“Uh-huh. Well, in that case, don’t you think you’re bordering on plagiarism with your bunny hood, there?”
“What!? D-Do you really think—”
As Izuku launches to his own defense, Sasuke just smiles to himself. Partly in amusement, and with just a hint of fondness.
No, Izuku, I don’t really think that. I just think you’ll be fine being Just You.

I feel like I am giving my own brain a noogie a lot of the time. Or, maybe, putting it in a headlock. Squeezing it from the inside. I feel like I am pinching my own brain, trying to get it to do different things, constantly. Does that make sense?
Is that normal? Do you feel the same way, other person reading this? For the sake of your comfort, and potentially entertainment, I want to be completely candid—I feel like this a fucking LOT. I don’t usually realize it, either. And look. I have this deep-seated knowledge that the average person on Earth is having a really shitty time. I think that’s the norm. We’re all gonna die, we’re all gonna suffer. If you aren’t dying, and you aren’t life-sucking, then what you’re in is very cool, very unusual, and very temporary. Some of us end up lucky enough to be dicking around on a Tumblr blog with loads of benefactors all around them. So I don’t like to complain. Or, fuck that. I should complain. Complaining is good. But I don’t like to be disappointed when life is not perfect, because it rarely is. So there’s that. I just notice it sometimes, like having tense shoulders (which I also have). I’ll be hanging out putting up a shirt in the closet, and realize I’ve been keeping my shoulders... more up? More up than they need to be. That’s the thing. It’s a subconscious tenseness that comes back again and again. That’s what’s going on in my brain. New paragraph.
So what do I care about this? It’s just a thing that happens. Big deal. Move on. Well, that’s the thing. I don’t know if it is a thing that happens. If it is, and it’s totally fine, then I’d love to just get on with my life. If it’s bad I want to stop, because it’s uncomfy and I think there’s a better life out there for me. I’m doing it now, even.
I think i thas something to do with this words part of my brain. This hyper-analytical, mostly-useless part of my brain that sucks at doing anything. The same part of my brain that, when I used to play baseball, would absolutely micromanage the fuck out of every aspect of my form in everything I did. It’s criticism. It’s toxic. God, do people criticize their kids and siblings. What a cycle of suckage. I would be thinking to myself, in the batter’s box, “think of the ball like a thing you need to hit DOWN with the bat.” That would work for a while, and then it would stop, and I’d come up with a new thing. That shit doesn’t work. That’s when the verbal, limited part of your brain tryies to use it’s own verbage to move you forward as a being. You know what I’m saying? That’s you words-brain, which isn’t good for much, actually. Silence is gold. You know what I’m saying?
Your words-brain is the best conduit we have of information from person to person (asterisk), but that information is ridiculously low-quality. Low res. It’s like... not that many pixels? I guess I don’t need more analogies. It’s fucking weak. Language is weak. It weakly approximates things, and we need a whole lot of other shit to adequately communicate anything (like gestures, context, etc.). When I talk, a lot of the time, I’m fixated on the words. I’m thinking about the language we’re using. it’s why, why I text someone, I automatically absorb their texting style and throw it right back at them. It’s probably also why, when I listen to a song, I am often thinking about it in abstract terms, subconsciously reverse-engineering the song to the writer. Unsuccessfully and inaccurately much of the time, for sure. I don’t want to seem like some dude who thinks he is just reverse engineering songs as he goes through life. That would be pretty cringey. But that’s the spirit. It’s there. It’s the sizing up of life experiences, thinking of things in the absolute most transactional, bit-by-bit ways. It’s seeing someone throw a ball well and thinking, “I should make sure my arm goes up like his when I throw,” or seeing a happy couple and thinking, “I should hold myself like this person to optimize life enjoyment.” It’s honestly pretty weird, but also interesting. Why would I look at things that way? This fixation on the mechanics of things is what makes a great builder of things, which I certainly aspire to be. I want to build great relationships, music, videos, animations, whatever. I don’t want to be guarded anymore, how I am. I want to just put myself out there.
And that brings us back to the beginning, somehow. I’m so used to being so hard on myself. So hard on everything around me. There’s this feeling, and it feels like pinching my brain. I am working really hard just to be good enough. For who? For what? Good questions, for sure. I don’t know. I do know that I have the urge to throw this blog away again. I just want to start fresh. I don’t want this stupid shit plaguing my memory. I don’t want to have this shitty blog where I just puked my thoughts out and made little puke piles that were shaped OK enough for me to feel smart. I want to have a cool blog. A smart person blog. Maybe I can talk a little about what I want. Maybe this is too negative. There’s some relation between this head-pinching feeling, this inward-spiraling of writing, and this hyperanalyticality. Man, seeing Phoebe Bridgers on Instagram and Twitter makes me dislike myself. I feel like I’m not cool enough to hang out with her. God. I wanna be cool.
I’m remembering writing in a journal when I was 17. I felt so similarly. I remember I was writing about feeling jealous of my brothers, and how it felt like everything came easily to them, and they always got better treatment, and yadda yadda yadda, and I was just full spiraling into a non-spiral-bound notebook. Comp book. If it were spiral bound, it’d maybe make a kinda beautiful song lyric. Maybe it’s better that it wasn’t. I got bitter. I’m just realizing I got bitter. I think I’ve known, but damn! I was really the not-bitter guy and it was awesome. I wonder why. Anyway. We’ll come back around to it. Maybe.
I was writing about my brothers, and I wrote out “I JUST WANT TO BE BEAUTIFUL.” At the time it felt so bad! I felt like it was the craziest thing I ever did. Writing that. Isn’t that funny? I felt like i was being a huge weirdo, and it’s because I had oppressed myself into semi-normalcy (which is also just regular socialization I guess?) and wasn’t thinking about my feelings at all. Now I’m 23 going on 24, and guess what? The feelings are still there. Basically all the same ones. The difference is that I have the tools to deal with them now. It’s cool to relate to yourself. Damn. That is a hilarious thing to say that I didn’t think I would find funny or novel. It feels good to relate to one’s self. It feels like my dragon to slay.
This relates back to the main point. Brain pinch. Getting out of this stupid brain-words mode. words-brain. Whatever. Left brain. Heady stuff. The dragon to slay here is this overwhelming issue of me being weird. I think that’s the fundamental question. It’s ok. I’ll say it. I’m weird. I don’t think it’s a bad thing. I think some people genuinely reach that self-aware age, look in a mirror, and go, “score. I’m normal.” Some people just think the right thoughts. I’ve definitely played on both teams in the weird vs. normal wars. I tend to side with normies, because, let’s face it, those other guys aren’t always the people you wanna get down with. The oppressive monolith of normalcy that presses ever forward, bullying that which gets in its way, is pretty reliable. A fear of being weird is healthy, I think. Being too weird is bad. Lol. I’m so far off point. I’m really distracted, worried, bored, and somehow procrastinating all at once. I thought life would be different. That’s part of it. I thought by now I’d know what I wanted to do. I thought I’d have more mature relationships with the people in my family. I thought I’d have more friends, not less. I thought that I’d finally be one of those people you see at the airport and think, “that person looks cool. Instead, I feel like I have less of an idea of what I want to do with my life than ever. I also feel like the kind of person I would avoid. I feel like my relationships with my family members have gotten to a better place, but I’m worried that it only got here because of pity they have for me. I thought I would have an army of cool friends rn, but I don’t. I thought I’d have money, but I don’t. I thought I’d have my shit together, and look at me now, I most certainly do not.
I may not be writing something good right now. I don’t think that’s what this blog is about. I think it’s about me shitting my brain out, but with words. It’s important for me to take big brain shits! I have to take brain shits! Or else I have a bunch of shit in my brain! Is that what an artist is? I don’t think so. I think artists, like, care about art.
Well that’s a relief. So these posts don’t have to be good. They SHOULD be shitty. They are literally shit. I’m gonna have a beer.

Extreme Teen Adventure VR
The summer that the teens were 16, Merle sent his most accomplished trio to spend the summer hopping from one job to another. Merle set up all the jobs before-hand with people he knew would try not to get the kids killed.
This time, Camila, Sage, and Mar went to Miller labs.
[part one] [Part two]
“Hey fools where’s your best wizard?” Sage demanded of some of the vaguely humanoid NPCs. He was super excited to beat the wizard, get the light, and win, but there was another reason to hurry too. Mar had seemed out of it and Sage wanted to be around him just in case. They were friends and they had to support each other.
“He’s IN the tower.” Said one of the NPC’s, pointing to a tall building in the middle of the town.
“Cool. Thanks.” Sage said, taking off towards it. It was a bit far, but he was in a virtual reality so he could exactly call on Scarlett for help. He missed that big scaley sweetheart already. He’d have to give her lots of tummy rubs and jerky when he gets out.
Much running later he reached the tower. Sage took a moment to catch his breath, not wanting to look winded in front of this wizard, and then walked in.
Camila walked along the farms on the edge of the town. She asked anyone she came across about the monster that had been attacking their cattle. It was slow-going work, but eventually she learned that two farms were being hit the hardest, no one knew where the monster came from, and that the monster only comes out at night. They had twenty-four hours, so Camila decided asked the owners of the two farms if she could hang around tonight to try to catch it in the act. If she hurried, she might be able to get to sleep by midnight.
So she set up where she would watch and as the sun went down, she waited.
The inside of the tower was plain. There was basically nothing there except a staircase leading up and up in a spiral. Sage glared at the staircase; he had just run all the way here and now this? No way in hell. He cast levitate on himself and floated up, not stopping until he reached the top step. With a satisfied sigh he brushed off his clothes and pushed open the door.
As we walked through, he found himself in a room where the walls were covered in bookshelves. The rest of the room was empty of all furniture except for a single armchair on the far end where an old man sat, reading.
“You’re the wizard?” Sage asked, trying not to laugh. He could take this guy out with a swift kick to the knees. This would be so easy.
The old man stood up. “I am the wizard.” He said in a voice more normal than the other NPCs but that still didn’t sound quite natural.
“At least Lucas gave you an actual appearance.” Sage joked “Now I know just how easy this will be.”
“Draw your wand and fight if you wish to beat me and earn the light of creation.”
“No one talks like a game boss, Lucas.” He wasn’t entirely sure the scientist could hear him, but it needed to be said. He wanted to live a day as his heroes, not doing whatever this is. “No one has a tower that’s all staircase that leads to a circular room with no furniture unless you are TRYING to be beat by a young adventurer on a quest.”
The only response he got was the old guy asking “Are you ready?”
“Yeah yeah.” Sage said, taking two wand out of his bag and holding one in either hand “Let’s get this over with.”
Camila sat on a fence, writing in her notebook. There wasn’t enough time to go back in town, help Mar, and be back here by nightfall, so she entertained herself by doodling. She was interrupted once when a tower in the middle of town exploded, but then she kept drawing. Pictures of trees and animals covered her pages and only when it was getting too dark to draw did she put the notebook away and watch.
For a while nothing happened. She sat in silence patiently, quiet as a mouse, waiting. An hour passed, then two, and then she saw it. A hulking shape was climbing over the fence next to her’s. It hadn’t seen her yet, but it was dangerously close. Slowly she dropped off her fence and notched an arrow in her bow. She crept along towards the beast, staying low to the ground the entire time. She got pretty darn close before the beast lifted its hulking head and sniffed the air. She let the arrow fly.
The arrow attached itself in the beast’s upper back. She notched another arrow and let that one go too as the beast turned her way. The arrow landed in it’s shoulder. The beast charged her way, so she dove to the side. As she did, it stumbled and fell flat.
“Paralyzing agent.” She said “You’re just a hungry creature and you’ve never actually hurt any of the people here. I’ll have someone relocate you far away from town. You’ll be able to move again in forty-eight hours.”
She walked up and removed the arrows, which had special tips that latch on with small barbs to inject the agent. This was a simulation, so killing the beast wouldn’t have been morally wrong, but it was the principle of the thing.
Besides, the paralyzing agent spreads fast, and the monster was so huge she wasn’t sure she would have been able to kill it with her arrows.
With that, Camila made her way back towards the town.
The fight was supposed to be. Sage blasted spells at the old guy NPC rapid fire, and though some got blocked, the man went flying across the room when another hit.
“HA!” Sage said with a grin. His gloating was cut off by a spectral form pinning him to the floor. It was some type of ghostly large cat. He cast a spell it’s way and it dispersed into nothing. Back and forth they went, old simulation vs cocky teenage boy. Finally, Sage decided this was taking to long.
He cast hold person on the old man.
“This has been fun, but I have an artificial world to save.”
And he ran towards the staircase, sliding down the railing for speed.
And blew up the top room of the tower behind him.

Appointments Vs Walk-Ins
If you have been in the industry long enough you’ve heard this age old argument. No? If not let me put you up on game. There are some barbers who only take walk-ins (which I feel are “prisoners of their chair”). Then you have barbers who only take appointments. In the beginning you will be a walk-in barber, unless you built an incredible clientele while in barber school this will be your life. Some say being an appointment based barber isn’t the wave. My opinion is that walk-in based barbers are insane. Need me to elaborate?
Walk-Ins (Scenario 1)
These are the type of customers I feel have nothing at all going on in life. I’m just being honest. Why do they have so much time in a day to sit 2 to 3 hours (on busy days) waiting on someone to cut their hair. With the way technology is today I feel as if everyone who is in the business of serving people or people looking to be served need to be using an online booking system. Or at least write appointments down on a piece of paper. Lets work this scenario out. Say your normal business hours are from 8:00am to 6:00pm. You have plans that evening to meet up with your significant other to catch a movie and go to dinner. You’re meeting them at 6:45pm. Your day starts out booming in the morning, slows up in the middle of the day and picks back up after school lets out and people are getting off of work. Its now 5:45pm and a walk-in pops up and ask, “do you have time for one more?” He only wants you to cut him and is willing to pay you “extra”. What do you do? Do you tell them you have plans? Do you suggest they come back tomorrow? No, you don’t. You get on your phone, cancel you plans so that you can get them in because you don't want to turn down any money. You are now what I call a “chair prisoner”. Here’s the first step to becoming free of your chair. Lean closer to the screen......START TAKING APPOINTMENTS!!! If not, you will continue letting walk-ins walk all over you. JMO.
Appointments (Scenario 2)
Allowing my clients to book appointments online was the best decision I’ve ever made. This November will be my 10th year as a professional barber (go D. Batt). I started taking appointments in 2011. The owner of the shop I worked at then was taking appointments and schooled me on it. I started out keeping appointments by writing down a customers name, day and time they wanted their service in a spiral notebook. Then I took what little money I saved and upgraded my cell phone to store appointments in the calendar app. From there I used Booksy for a few years and today I have my own custom app where clients have full access to my schedule 24/7. Online booking is beneficial for me because I have other things going on outside of the shop. I have a wife and two kids who I love spending time with, I love reading on my off days and I also love researching new ways of making more money so that I can provide for my family while leaving a legacy behind after I am gone from this earth. If you have a good system in place I feel online booking could be beneficial for your clients and you as well (email me at [email protected] with questions about online booking systems or how to get your own custom app). Now lets play out scenario #2, only this time you now offer appointments. Your normal business hours again are from 8:00am to 6:00pm and you have plans to meet your significant other at 6:45pm for dinner and a movie. Your schedule is full for the day and you know you’re leaving at 6:00pm sharp. 5:45pm rolls around, only a few minutes until you’re done and BAM, a walk-in pops up. Asking if you can fit them in and they are willing to pay you extra (sidebar: sometimes extra isn’t all that extra). You now can politely tell them you can’t fit them in because you have plans. You then hand them one of your business cards with your booking information on it, pack up your things and get to where you need to go and do you know why you can do this? Lean in a little closer to the screen this time and i’ll tell you......BECAUSE YOU TAKE APPOINTMENTS!!! You are now in control of your life and have freed yourself from being a prisoner of your chair. You have the POWER! Mind blowing right? Lol.
Tumblr media
All jokes aside it doesn’t matter which type of barber you choose to be. As long as you’re professional, consistent, and putting out dope work for the world to see. Bobby Brown said it best, “Its Your Prerogative”, so do what you feel best fits your business model. Thank you for taking the time to read this. If you know anyone who could benefit from reading this feel free to share it with them.
Written by, D. Battle at 2:27am 2/9/19 so don’t say I don’t have love for our industry.
Written for, all of you who are currently sleep. I do it all for you.

Hi! What notebooks do you recommend for school note taking?
Notebooks entirely depend on the subject you need them for! Things to consider:
How many notes does this class require? (e.g. is it a note-heavy class, or a discussion-based class) -- determines (a) size and (b) page count
Will I be taking in-class notes and textbook notes in the same notebook? -- will require more pages
Do I have large handwriting? -- will take up more space
Do I care about aesthetics? -- form vs function. you don’t really need a nice-looking notebook as long as it does the job!
Do I care about the binding type? -- e.g. composition notebooks are bound on the side; spiral bound lets you flip the pages around
What kind of paper am I looking for? -- this includes lined vs graph vs dot grid; thickness; white vs cream, etc.
My go-to for science classes that are very note-heavy are the Staples ACCEL 1-subject notebooks. (100 pgs, 8.5x11). They’re spiral bound, very sturdy, and have decent paper quality. I will normally take in-class notes and textbook notes in the same book. I have used moleskine cahiers before for textbook notes if I want to keep my notes and use them for reference later.
For my English classes, I have found that I don’t really have any “textbook notes,” as it’s primarily reading and lecture based. I find I get by fine with a small A5 notebook (40pgs). Mine is from HEMA, a Dutch brand, but you can find many alternatives online (e.g. muji, rhodia, random brands, etc.)
Other popular notebooks: moleskine, rhodia, muji, loose-leaf paper

25 of The Best Anime on Netflix
Netflix is all the rage in the days of COVID-19 and quarantine.
With hundreds of shows available for streaming, it is little wonder Netflix has seen a spike in viewership. It is no secret that many of the shows on Netflix have such a huge following; the genre classifications on the popular streaming platform are rather comprehensive.
Anime is one of those genres, and if you have never watched an anime, you are missing out. Contrary to popular belief, animes are not just for children. Anime for adults has been around for a long time, and there is something for everyone. Here's our list of 25 of the best anime on Netflix.
25 of The Best Anime On Netflix
Saint Seiya
Saint Seiya is one of those animes that only works because it is an anime. Follow the Knights of the Zodiac as they fight on behalf of the Greek goddess Athena. This anime is just cool. The fights are sweet in this show, and the twist on Greek lore is refreshing and fun.
It is difficult to find any English versions of this anime (subbed or dubbed), and fans should take advantage of this rare opportunity and enjoy this unique anime.
Neon Genisis Evangelion
Neon Genisis Evangelion is an OG in mecha animes. The anime focuses on the struggles of preventing the apocalypse by showing 14-year-olds battling Angels (titan-esque creatures that want to destroy humanity) in giant robots.
Explaining the plot is beyond difficult, and in all honesty, it is easier just to watch it, you won't regret it.
The story is fantastic and hard to find in the US (literally). The story and characters are complex, making this show and its spin-off movies (also on Netflix) worth the watch.
Fate/Zero
Fate/Zero is one of the many adaptations of the Fate manga franchise, but it is, in my opinion, one of the best. The adaptation is full of mythological references, so brush up before you start watching this one.
The show name drops figures like Alexander the Great, King Arthur, and Gilgamesh. The characters are all battling for the mythical Holy Grail, and the battles are titanic. Magic, swordplay, and philosophy are the hallmarks of this series. What's not to love?
Bleach
Bleach is an anime with a focus on sword fighting. Virtually every battle that takes place involves at least one person with a sword. Don't let that description turn you off though, these aren't your average swords, and this isn't your average anime. Kurosaki Ichigo is a high school boy with the ability to see spirits.
He meets a soul reaper (aka shinigami) and gains the powers of one during the encounter. Shinigamis are the sword wielders in this series, and their swords are in a class of their own.
This is a brilliant anime and with five seasons currently available on Netflix and the nine soon-to-be-available, making all 17 seasons available for your viewing pleasure. On a plus note, there has been news recently stating that the anime would be rebooted, with more seasons, based on the manga coming in 2021, so binge it now and be ready for the new seasons to come.
One Piece
One Piece is an anime that outdoes itself. It is one of the longest animes ever, with over 900 episodes. This hilarious shōnen anime is iconic. The characters are complex and loveable; the story is broad, and the plot is ridiculous.
Follow Monkey D. Luffy and his pirate crew as they travel the world, battling the Navy, defying the World Government, and facing off against rival pirates on their journey to become the greatest pirate crew of all time.
The anime has been around for years, and it has remained popular throughout its tenure, and it is still ongoing. This anime is a must-see and is worth every minute of time spent binging it.
Full Metal Alchemist and Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Full Metal Alchemist and Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood are classic. The story focuses on two brothers, Ed and Al, as they strive to master the art of alchemy. The brothers' origins are heartbreaking, and their story is riveting.
The array of characters in this show only adds the appeal, with even the villains being more than they first appear. Their alchemical abilities are put to the test as they battle other alchemists and their creations. This is an amazing series, and there's a reason it is one of the most popular shōnen animes ever.
Attack on Titan
Beware, Attack on Titan is heavy. This anime is amazing and is hands down worth the watch, but be forewarned; there is a lot of death and gore in this series. Humanity has been pushed to the brink as they battle to survive against the Titans.
Titans are large humanoid creatures who consume humans. Their origins are a mystery, and the damage they deal out is catastrophic. Eren Yeager is the lead of this series, and his is a complex story.
He and his friends fight to survive in this Titan riddled world. They work as Titan hunters and attempt to discover the Titan's origins and the key to their demise. The series is heart-wrenching, devastating, and action-packed. It is a great series, but it is not for the faint-hearted.
Death Note
Death Note is an anime that explores just how twisted people can be. The show follows the story of Light Yagami after he finds a mysterious notebook called the Death Note. The Death Note is a dangerous artifact as it causes the death of any person whose name is written on its pages.
Light begins the story by trying to use the notebook for good, but quickly spirals down a dark path where he tries to create a utopia where he is the god of death. His journey is twisted, and he finds himself hounded by a brilliant detective, known as L.
Their cat-and-mouse chase is riveting; fans will find themselves on the edges of their seats in this masterful series.
Inuyasha
Inuyasha is an anime that delves into the lore of ancient Japan. Featuring time travel romances, demons, witches, and a myriad of Japanese yokai, Inuyasha has a little bit of everything.
Kagome is the reincarnation of a Japanese priestess who battled demons and yokai in ancient Japan. She accidentally travels in time back to ancient Japan, where she encounters the half-demon Inuyasha. Their time travels and antics are amazing, and this anime is well worth the watch.
Hunter X Hunter
Hunter X Hunter is an excellent anime for fans of gratuitous action. Hunters are warriors who travel around locating rare animals, taking bounties, and finding treasure.
The version on Netflix is from the 2011 adaptation of the manga (there is another, but it is not on Netflix). The fights are epic in this series, and the protagonist's journey to becoming a great hunter is engaging, to say the least.
The heroes struggle to become a hunter and follow in his father's footsteps is engaging, and the over-the-top fight scenes are pretty fun to watch.
Ouran High School Host Club
Ouran High School Host Club is an undoubted one-of-a-kind anime. The show is pretty woke and way before its time since it came out in 2006. The show's hilarious cast and absurd premise are great for days of laughter.
The heroine, Haruhi Fujioka, is amazing. She is gender fluid and spends a significant portion of the first episode and the rest of the show being mistaken for and treated like a man. The show is full of LGBTQ themes and characters, and it is an absolute delight to watch.
Naruto and Naruto: Shippuden
Want a show that will test the limits of your binge-watching abilities? Then you want Naruto. With over 700—yes, you read that right—episodes in the series, Naruto is a binge-watch that is amazing to watch but requires real dedication to get all the way through.
Naruto and his friends are amazing, and 700+ episodes mean plenty of character development, complex plots, and epic battles. You can watch hours of the ninja run that went viral, all while enjoying the adventures of a ninja boy and his friends. This shōnen anime is a classic.
One Punch Man
Marvel vs. DC? Who needs that noise, when you can watch One Punch Man instead? This comedic action anime is perfect for fans of movies like Thor: Ragnarok. Saitama (aka One Punch Man) struggles with being overpowered (aka OP) and finding himself feeling unfulfilled with being a superhero.
It's hard being a hero who can beat any opponent with a single punch, and this show encapsulates the very human feeling of unfulfillment in the face of unrealized expectations.
His battles are epic, and his story is both hilarious and empathy invoking. This is a great show, and if you love superheroes, this is the anime for you.
The Disastrous Life of Saiki K
Internal monologue, much? Trust me; you've got nothing on The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. Follow the journey of a psychic teenager named Saiki as he struggles to live a normal life while hiding his psychic abilities.
His deadpan delivery, poker-faced panic, and teen angst make him the kind of protagonist we can all relate to. Full of mundane antics, excess internal monologuing, and moody teenage angst, The Disastrous Life of Saiki K is an excellent series for any binge.
Pokémon
There are multiple Pokémon series available on Netflix, and like most Pokémon products, they're all great. Follow Ash and his friends as they struggle to become master Pokémon trainers.
Even though Ash has never actually been an excellent Pokémon trainer, his determination to keep on trying to be one is delightful. This series is full of nostalgia and feel-good vibes. It is a great series, perfect for adults and kids, that never goes out of style.
Aggretsuko
Some shows speak to us with painful realism, and Aggretsuko is definitely one of them. Retsuko, the protagonist, copes with real-world struggles, like a crappy job, with heavy metal karaoke. Her transformations when she sings and the painfully real struggles she faces are what make this show great.
Being a millennial can be hard; the struggle is so real sometimes, and this anime catches that perfectly. The struggles of young people in the workplace, in the dating scene, and navigating friendships are told beautifully in this comedic anime. It helps that the music is good, too.
Your Lie in April
If you love classical music and the emotions it evokes, then you'll love (and hate) Your Lie in April. Get ready to get hit in the feels, everybody. The anime focuses on a young piano prodigy who loses his demanding mother to a long-term illness and then loses his ability to hear music.
The anime follows his story many years later after he meets and falls in love with a violinist. This anime uses music to its fullest capacity, often using instrumental numbers to convey the characters' deep and complex feelings.
No character in this story is shallow; all of them have complex emotions and arcs. Break out your tissues and comfort chocolates as you follow this beautiful story of loss and love.
Devilman Crybaby
Devilman Crybaby is an anime whose premise is the most PG thing about it. Featuring a teenage boy who is possessed by a demon, this series is dark, harsh, and chaotic. An odd mix of humor, moral dilemmas, and the trials of puberty make this anime for adults only.
This is a brutal story, showcasing the depravity of humans and demons and the struggle that comes with growing up in a world that leaves you unprepared for both.
Castlevania
This Netflix original anime is based on the video game with the same name. It is based on the story of Dracula, meaning it is bloody, violent, and heartbreaking. This is not, however, your mother's Dracula story.
If you have never played the video game, then the lore here will be new to you, but don't let the lack of gaming experience stop you. This anime is nail-biting, and discovering the lore while you watch is half the fun.
With three seasons so far and a fourth on the way, Castlevania is going an amazing adaptation to the popular Konami video game series.
Violet Evergarden
Anyone who ever claimed that anime is just for kids has never heard of Violet Evergarden. This anime deals with a post-war world and the difficulties of those who survived the conflict. Violet is a traumatized former child soldier, who lost her arms in war and with them her childhood, and emotions.
Her story continues as she struggles to reconnect with her emotions as overcome her trauma with the power of writing, support, and therapy. Few animes (or stories) capture the horrors of war, the power of therapy, and the sheer trauma of war and its aftermath the way Violet Evergarden does.
Little Witch Academia
Fans of Harry Potter will find themselves enchanted by this adorable anime. The show's protagonist, Akko, is a delight. Her plucky spirit, indomitable spirit, and unbridled love for her friends are heartwarming. Akko is charmingly clumsy and inspiring in her journey to master magic and become a great witch.
Fans can't help but be delighted by her personality and one-of-a-kind friendships. Cute characters and charming storytelling are the hallmarks of this adorable shoujo series, and shoujo fans are sure to be delighted by this wonderful addition to the genre.
Kill La Kill
Few animes are as controversial as Kill La Kill. Unlike most controversial animes, the issue doesn't lie with the plot, relationships, or gore, but the shameless fan-service the costumes provide.
It is an odd controversy for a show that passes both the Bechdel and Reverse Bechdel test—if you are not familiar with the test, look it up, it will change how you look at the shows you watch. The take on combat is unique in Kill La Kill, where clothes are what grant characters superpowers.
Shameless fan service aside, the show tackles issue surrounding body image, fashion, and mental health, making it an interesting show all around.
March Comes Like A Lion
March Comes Like A Lion is an anime whose art is unique in every way. The anime features Rei, a 17-year-old Shogi player, who struggles after losing his family. The art style of this anime is fluid; it changes to reflect the emotional struggles Rei faces. It conveys deeper meaning to his emotional turmoil.
The style goes from gorgeous watercolor backgrounds and to stark black and white sketches as we watch Rei attempt to cope with loss. It is truly amazing to see this blend of storytelling and art. This amine is in a league of its own and is worth the watch.
K-On!
This is one of those animes that makes you feel good. A girl's light music club is in danger of closing, and this anime showcases their struggles to gain enough members to stay open and the difficulties they face as average high schoolers.
It is a cute anime, and it is loads of fun to watch. The music is nice, and the story gives out tons of feel-good vibes. Enjoy the array of J-pop, while watching this band of girls navigates high school, friendships, and coming-of-age.
Bonus Time!
I've added a bonus title to our list because there has been a lot of debate on whether this show is an anime or not. Personally, I don't care how the show is classified; it is amazing either way.
Avatar The Last Airbender
This show was recently added to Netflix, and within days it was number one on viewership. Avatar The Last Airbender is absolutely fantastic. It has a diverse cast, truly amazing character arcs, and a story that captures audiences years later.
There's plenty to love in this series, and the influences from Japan and China are obvious throughout this series. Anime or not (depending on which side of the debate you are on), it is undeniable that this show is 100% worth watching.
Fall in love with Aang and the gaang—yes, they do call themselves that—as they help Aang master all four elements and become a fully realized Avatar and save the world.
Bottom Line
Dubbed or subbed, any one of these animes is suitable for any binge. Whether you are already an otaku—you know who you are— or an anime newbie, any of these fantastic animes is sure to provide hours of quality coach time.
That's our list. Please enjoy the full array of anime available on Netflix; there are others, not this list, that is still pretty good. Have a favorite anime from Netflix not on the list? Comment below!

Weight loss can be an essential part of your health, but finding a good plan can sometimes be difficult. There are lots of diets that do not work or that can be harmful. Here are some tips that could help you and your doctor create a great plan in losing weight.
A great way to start your day is by getting some cardio when you wake up before you consume foods. Studies show that you burn up to 300 percent more calories vs doing cardiovascular exercise any other time during the day.
Eat your largest meal in the afternoon instead of the day. If you usually have a small sandwich for lunch, have a dinner-sized meal instead.
TIP! Eliminating a good majority of beef and other red meats from your diet is a great step towards better nutrition and achieving a more healthy weight. Red meat contains high levels of cholesterol and unhealthy saturated fats, which can contribute to heart disease.
Other options include Tai Chi, Pilates, or simply running. Talk with your doctor prior to beginning any program if there is a health program. You can find many exercises to do at home during the day to stay healthy.
Lose Weight
One tip for keeping trim and to lose weight loss is to eat breakfast. It may seem like common sense, but lost of folks think skipping calories is a way to lose weight. It might let you not have a lot of calories at first, but skipping breakfast can cause serious cravings by lunch time. You might end up running to the vending machine before lunch even be tempted to have a mid-morning snack that you want to avoid.
TIP! You can have your favorite foods when they are intentionally made to include less calories. Many times, when someone is trying to lose weight, they stop eating the food they love, and then once a craving hits or they hit the point of starving, the whole diet goes out the window.
Don’t skip meals when you want to lose weight.Skipping meals doesn’t make you lose weight, which can put you in a position to eat too much food.
Take the stairs when you are trying to lose weight. You might only burn a few extra calories, but it does burn additional calories every time you do it.
Eating from a smaller size plate will make you to eat less. There have been studies that show that people will most likely eat whatever size portion is set in front of them.
TIP! Eat a salad before the main course. You will get much-needed fiber from a salad, which will help you to fill up, but with less calories.
Some people prefer not to use less butter or replace it with a butter substitute. Some people really enjoy how real butter tastes. You don’t have to totally eliminate butter to lose weight. All you have to do is use whipped butter. It only half the calories.
Try talking as much as you can when eating at a restaurant. You will be able to digest your food this way and perhaps eat less. Engage in serious conversation and you can reduce the amount of calories you eat at dinner.
Weight Loss
TIP! Try not to travel in a car to every place that you visit. Physical transportation, like running or bicycling, can help you burn calories while you get from point a to point b.
Weight loss is not as difficult if you take the time to think about it. The last thing you want to be if you’re trying to lose weight loss is a couch potato.
A good way to stay healthy is to eat a variety of foods when you’re dieting. Many people think they are tired of eating the same thing each day. It can even be unhealthy and boring.
If you tend to pile on the pounds with ease, you need to avoid buffets. Buffets that have all-you-can-eat specials encourage you to eat a lot of food as possible to get your full money’s worth.
TIP! Walnuts are a healthy and simple snack food to have close-by. A study has shown that walnut consumption as a part of breakfast helped people feel more full and satisfied than those eating a regular breakfast.
Weight Loss
Eating cereals five days a week is proven to help you with your weight loss. Cereal contains calcium and other vitamins and minerals that keep your heart. Not every brand is suitable for weight loss, so don’t go reaching for Cap’n Crunch.Stick with healthy, like Total and Bran Flakes.
Get rid of clothing that have gotten too big. Keeping the clothes can sabotage your weight back again. By taking this clothing out of your life, you will be forced to stay at this weight or go smaller.
TIP! Whole grain foods are a good addition to any weight loss diet. Sound advice about whole grains is available from many sources.
Drinking water before each meal is a great idea.It is easier to eat too much when you are hungry because your brain doesn’t realize your belly is full until after you’ve already eaten.
Eat foods that are low-calorie.
Don’t just eat 3 big meals. Large meals are harder to process and can cause you to easily go over the calorie limit you have set for yourself. Try changing your eating habits to include more frequent smaller meals throughout the day to help your body stoked.Every meal should be about 200 to 300 calories total.
TIP! Count your calories. Get a cheap spiral notebook.
It’s normal to want to fill a bowl or plate with food, and dishes have gotten bigger in recent years, causing portions sizes to grow accordingly.
There are a number of great aerobic exercise options to choose other than running. Swimming is a good option for those with bad joints. You can also take a dance classes.
Try to balance your weight loss properly balanced by drinking lots of water and using good weightlifting techniques.
TIP! Eat breakfast to stay thin or to lose weight. For some, this is obvious.
Try to remain positive about your weight. If you can maintain positive thoughts about what you are trying to achieve, you can do them without dread. This can help keep you motivated on rougher days.
If you are eating the wrong foods, you may just be doing that for the comfort food aspect. You need to try to understand the triggers that cause you to consume comfort food.
Pound out meat when you buy in bulk. This will result in smaller portions for meal time. Pounding the meat to tenderize it makes it more tender and palatable without added sauces or gravies.
TIP! Drink decaf coffee to lose weight. It tends to have less calories than regular coffee.
Fast weight loss may please you more, but there is a risk to your help and the results are typically not sustainable.
Weight Loss
Weight loss, as you now know, is a very important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This way, it’s easier to understand how to fit a weight loss plan into your life. Start with the tips you just read.
TIP! Pick one day a week or month to cook a large batch of meals, then freeze individual portions. Having healthy food around will detour you from choosing unhealthy options.
