04. Crash Bandicoot Purple & Spyro Orange (Vicarious Visions, 2004)
Tumblr media
Watch me suffer through this game here!
After the shock and disappointment I experienced learning about the cancelled Crash & Spyro platformer title by Toys for Bob, it only seemed fitting to revisit the crossover(s) we actually got.
Hoo boy, this one is rough.
Split into two simultaneous releases and sporting a link cable trading mechanic a-la Pokémon (except in this case, it's for almost completely functionless trading cards), this duology falls into the oft-maligned "minigame adventure" genre, with a series of side-scrolling hub areas stringing together a collection of non sequitur challenges into a very basic campaign.
The more platforming-focused minigames in Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto's Rampage are relatively inoffensive (having been built on the same foundation as Vicarious Visions' previous Game Boy Advance Crash titles), but the often auto-scrolling flight and vehicle-focused segments that make up the majority of Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy are particularly tedious. As if to add insult to injury, at about the 85% mark, it's revealed that the player is also expected to backtrack for the sake of completing every side objective or replaying each minigame multiple times in order to unlock the final area and confront the incredibly brief and unsubstantial final boss.
What on paper should be an exciting crossover of gaming icons more closely resembles publisher-mandated shovelware than the comparatively solid prior GBA output of either franchise. I can't even say I'd recommend it to morbidly curious Spyro or Crash fans; it really is nothing more than pure 2000-aughts handheld filler; your time is better spent elsewhere.

Crash Bandicoot - Spyro The Dragon
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Did you know that there is a crossover between these two titles?
Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto's Rampage and Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy are two platform games published by Vivendi Universal Games. They are developed by Vicarious Visions for the Game Boy Advance. They were released in North America on June 3, 2004, and in Europe on June 25, 2004 under the names Crash Bandicoot Fusion and Spyro Fusion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The games are the tenth installment in the Crash Bandicoot series of video games, and the eighth installment in the Spyro series of video games  For both series, the games are the fourth installments made for the Game Boy Advance. This crossover is set after the events of their games for that platform. The story of the games center on a plot to wreak havoc on the universe by the main antagonists Doctor Neo Cortex and Ripto, who have recently joined forces. The protagonists of the story, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon, must team up and defeat Doctor Cortex and Ripto along with their genetically modified minions. This game marks Brendan O'Brien's last appearance in the series as the voice of Crash.

daily drawins for today.
The first drawing is for Insektober, the prompt was ‘Dark’. So it’s a drawing of Synapse, in the dark. And also Spotty is there lol. it’s based off Klose EnKounters!
The second drawing was made in Aggie.io... I drew Ember from Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy... but her colors are wacky because I asked the other people in the aggie.io room to suggest a color palette for me! So they just put random colors next to the drawing and I HAD to use all of them lol. Will def tag this as eyestrain cuz of her horns alone lol

//oh wait, I forgot to ask your thoughts about the GBA games, his appearance in Skylanders and also that lost forgotten cartoon intro that failed to meet the light of day...//
Tumblr media
{{Sorry this is a little late but I’ll give my answer on this too! c:}}
Crash Tag Team Racing
So I’ll start here cause I forgot it in the last one, but this one I thought it was an okay game with some funny moments in the open hub world and crazy stuff, like the Die-O-Ramas or gags.
Although as far as the Crash racing games go, I think this was one of the weaker ones in the actual race sections in my opinion I feel like CTR was still the best kart racer of the 3 main ones.
Cancelled Crash Bandicoot Cartoon
Now I’ve seen this supposed intro to an old 2D cartoon that never released, and it did look promising like a show that would have come out in that time. I’m sure had it released it would have been fairly good. c:
But I don’t know if you’ve heard but there are rumors that a Crash show will be coming soon, again just rumors but if it happens I hope for the best. :3
GBA Crash Games.
Can’t comment much on these since I never played most of them for myself, except seeing parts of N. Tranced which I think that N. Trance as a character is a really interesting one that would be cool to see more of. However there is one GBA game of Crash’s I did have.
Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto’s Rampage
So I thought this game was decent enough, although even comparing it to other GBA Crash games it was minigames galore and the crossover I’ve thought to this day could have been way better had it been on consoles.
Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy
Might as well mention this since Crash still has a major role here. Between the two halves of the crossover I think this was the weaker one, I love Spyro perhaps even more than Crash but this didn’t feel much like a Spyro game let alone a Crash one.
I mean again, minigames galore. I had another GBA Spyro game that was more like his games “Attack of the Rhynocs” but this was just endless minigames sadly.
Skylanders Imaginators
Now this was Crash’s first real reintroduction into the world since he’d been completely missing from gaming for over ten years before the N. Sane Trilogy. I’ve manage to check out his section of the game, and I found it fairly decent and interesting that Fake Crash of all people was the actual antagonist of that part. XD
Skylanders Academy
Not a game but I thought I’d give my opinion since he’s here too. Sure he’s not the main character and he only has a guest appearance in 3 different episodes of the show but I liked his presence.
He seemed to be a bit controversial because this is the one time (besides that one Crash 2 commercial) where he’s actually had a speaking voice, and not the high pitched kind that VA Jess Harnell has given him over the years, but a deeper voice with an Australian accent.
Now many people had issue with that, and while I do prefer the sillier side and higher tone of voice I didn’t mind this, I noticed after his first appearance they made him goofier since it was lacking at first and this version of him cause of things like this makes him one of the more unique versions of him I think, cause he speaks and is different from others.
Though the version of Crash from the games is still my favorite I’d say.
