I've had 12 hours to think on it and you know what? I don't think I was mean enough to the white boy last night who started up a conversation with me while I was taking photographs to eventually ask how I felt about AI. On pride no less.

GOD, I just watched a video explaining the new Pinterest tos by an AI bro I feel so yucky like I need to take a shower
how can miss people the point so bad
like no the “Old-school crators” (as he called them) and us the community are not mad at AI because *you* guys know where the money is and that *you* found a money hole
no we are mad because generative ai steals from artists. Because Id rather see a non smooth brain generated by ai images of “wild flowers“ but an actual picture my someone taken on a shitty camera
Because I choose nature not destruction. Because I choose Nature and Kindness over greed and destruction

I need people to stop thinking of robots and AI in their current states of advancement as conscious beings. It's a weird amount of anthropomorphization that really misses the mark on what the concerns surrounding these things should be. When you start talking about AI and robots as anything but tools, you begin to view robots and AI themselves as the problem instead of the people in charge of them and what they're being used for. It also makes you sound like a luddite who thinks the voice in their smartphone is Literally The Devil.
#your concerns first and foremost should be tangible things like workers rights. not some wishy washy Pure Human Spirit shit#like can we focus on things that can actually be fixed instead of your own personal beef with Soulless Robots(tm)#also it leads to an extremely annoying amount of scaremongering#'omg guys look 😱😱😱 this ai said it wants to take over the world 😱😱😱' it is a generative text model.#you literally told it to say that. chatgpt is not planning world domination just because you asked it to tell you abt world domination.#it is physically incapable of thinking in the way that we think. it does not have emotions either.#i know ppl are allergic to nuance abt ai on here but yknow. shouting into the void#if ur boss is trying to replace you with ai perhaps the problem is with ur boss and not with ai#because if ai didn't exist and some cheaper easier alternative to hiring employees at a full wage & benefits popped up--#--ur boss would be all over that alternative too. bc it is literally just smth to hold over ur heads to stop u from asking for better pay#or better conditions/benefits/hours/etc.#idk im rambling but my point is that ur boss will always find a boogeyman to scare you into settling for less. its not new or unique to ai#ergo... perhaps ai itself is not the issue here and we should focus less energy at ai itself and more energy at the people wielding it--#--against workers.#please please pleaseeeeeee use ur critical thinking skills im beggingggggggggg dont be stupid about this#talking

#after two nights of not being able to sleep very well#I’m just remembering what my most recent therapist said - and boy was he ever wrong#‘everything gets easier once you’re in your 30s’ does it? ‘yeah it’s like a switch flipping’#like. buddy I’ve been in my 30s for a few years now. just what is supposed to get easier exactly?#now you’re right. there *are* certain things I care less about. HOWEVER that doesn't mean everything's better/easier#like why make a claim that is absolutely impossible to back up#you had no idea what political bullshit was going to happen when I was smack dab in the middle of my 30s#you didn’t know what challenges I was going to face. so why did you say that?#were you just trying to make me feel better? or was it merely a reflection of the secure stability you found at 30#which so many of my generation and gen Z-ers are going to be struggling to find for years?#were you just speaking from your place of priviledge as a cishet man#not knowing what us queers have to go through to find even a sliver of safe secure stability?#maybe don’t make promises that you can’t keep my guy.#although why am I surprised? I’ve been disappointed by such promises my whole life#‘get an education or you’ll never make any money’ okay I have a master’s degree and I’m struggling to find work#you didn’t know AI was going to take over the proofreading business did you#like people have got to stop pretending they know so much#my resolution this year is just to learn how to sit back and say#I don’t know shit about shit. I’ve been kept in the dark about some things and I just haven’t had the chance or desire to learn about other#so I’m going to look at the world with the wonder of a child and allow myself to be amazed by the joys I find in it#and to be analytical about the horrors that I find in it#I know only one thing: I know nothing. and neither do a lot of the people who are running their mouths off like they do#so it’s time to approach life like a scientist: i don’t know about this. i have theories that I can test.#if I find evidence that I’m on the right track then it doesn’t mean I know it all. it means I know what questions to ask next

Y'all I know that when so-called AI generates ridiculous results it's hilarious and I find it as funny as the next guy but I NEED y'all to remember that every single time an AI answer is generated it uses 5x as much energy as a conventional websearch and burns through 10 ml of water. FOR EVERY ANSWER. Each big llm is equal to 300,000 kiligrams of carbon dioxide emissions.
LLMs are killing the environment, and when we generate answers for the lolz we're still contributing to it.
Stop using it. Stop using it for a.n.y.t.h.i.n.g. We need to kill it.

Art won't be that expensive if you go the digital route even.
Like YOU do have a gadget that CAN (should?) handle a AI that can generate images.
You can draw there, there are digital art programs that are free.
(Get Ibispaint! Personal suggestion)(Watch adds for the brushes)
Traditional is where it gets a huge amount pricey.
As you need paper, pencils, erasers, and pens at the least.
If you want to color markers and paint are pricey, but crayons and highlighters are cheap.
*I used highlighters to color when in school, its good trust.
blue for shadow, yellow for light, and pink for the blush/ warmth
* Starving artists are starving artists for a reason
* Use pinterest if you cant think of anything.
* Trace for inspiration (like the poses) but not for stealing.
On the other hand.
AI authors god just use ao3 or even wattpad without the ai.
Use the ai like for grammar checks thats fine in my opinion, but dont use the girl for every part of it.
Write what you think the story will be about, its okay if its shit I know the feeling.
Flesh out the story! What names are the cities? Is there history?
Think of yourself like a DND DM entertaining your players(readers)!
The advancements in our technology doesnt mean we can forget and ignore the past creations that it was built on.

The Trump administration’s decision to publicize something like Alligator Alcatraz is not just a useful weapon that they can now threaten their enemies — and Elon Musk — with. It’s also a distinctly new form of propaganda. Something they seem to have picked up from the video tours of Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT) in El Salvador. The concentration camp reimagined as a hype house. A place to make content, both real and AI-generated, that glorifies the power of the state. What Democratic super-poster Will Stancil described this week as “pornography for Trump's sadistic base.” But also content that desensitizes you. That normalizes state violence and, most importantly, turns it into a meme. Trump’s administration knows that most effective propaganda of the 21st century is viral, ephemeral, and, crucially, stupid. Something CNN hosts can joke about on air, distracted by how idiotic the name is. How goofy the T-shirts are. Completely removed from the human misery happening behind closed doors.
Trump's big, beautiful gulag
This is what Republicans voted for. This is what they wanted.
Don’t let anyone tell you they didn’t vote for this, they actually voted for [low taxes | strong defense | the party | the price of eggs| some other bullshit], and now they are horrified. They never wanted masked thugs to terrorize and kidnap an innocent mother while her children watch. They never wanted masked vigilantes to terrorize entire communities and beat fathers bloody in front of their families.
They never wanted any of this, they tell us, and maybe they didn’t want it, but he promised it, and his base held up signs celebrating it. He promised to inflict this terror and this sadistic cruelty on as many people as he could, and that even if they say they didn’t want this to happen, his repeated promises to do exactly this certainly weren’t enough to stop them from voting for him.
So many people who voted for him like to pretend that they aren’t Nazis; it’s the MAGA extremists who are the Nazis. It’s not this guy who lives in the middle-class suburb! This guy goes to church and takes his kids to soccer practice! He was appalled by January 6 (though he’s rewritten almost all of it in his head into something less violent). He doesn’t support those MAGA people; in fact, he’s embarrassed by them!
Deep breath. Okay. Hey, buddy, I have some news: there is no difference between you and them. You’re just as deplorable, and you do not get to pretend you didn’t vote for this like they did. You may dress nice and check all the “good neighbor” boxes, just like a lot of Germans did in the 1930s, but you don’t fool me.
Whatever justification you invented to feel good about what you did, doesn’t matter. It’s the result of your vote that matters, and you voted for terror, suffering, and incompetent malevolence aimed at the heart of our Constitution.
I will never forget this. I will never forgive you for the suffering you enabled.

the most frustrating thing about AI Art from a Discourse perspective is that the actual violation involved is pretty nebulous
like, the guys "laundering" specific artists' styles through AI models to mimic them for profit know exactly what they're doing, and it's extremely gross
but we cannot establish "my work was scraped from the public internet and used as part of a dataset for teaching a program what a painting of a tree looks like, without anyone asking or paying me" as, legally, Theft with a capital T. not only is this DMCA Logic which would be a nightmare for 99% of artists if enforced to its conclusion, it's not the right word for what's happening
the actual Violation here is that previously, "I can post my artwork to share with others for free, with minimal risk" was a safe assumption, which created a pretty generous culture of sharing artwork online. most (noteworthy) potential abuses of this digital commons were straightforwardly plagiarism in a way anyone could understand
but the way that generative AI uses its training data is significantly more complicated - there is a clear violation of trust involved, and often malicious intent, but most of the common arguments used to describe this fall short and end up in worse territory
by which I mean, it's hard to put forward an actual moral/legal solution unless you're willing to argue:
Potential sales "lost" count as Theft (so you should in fact stop sharing your Netflix password)
No amount of alteration makes it acceptable to use someone else's art in the production of other art without permission and/or compensation (this would kill entire artistic mediums and benefit nobody but Disney)
Art Styles should be considered Intellectual Property in an enforceable way (impossibly bad, are you kidding me)
it's extremely annoying to talk about, because you'll see people straight up gloating about their Intent To Plagiarize, but it's hard to stick them with any specific crime beyond Generally Scummy Behavior unless you want to create some truly horrible precedents and usher in The Thousand Year Reign of Intellectual Property Law

I really don’t care if I’m considered an annoying luddite forever, I will genuinely always hate AI and I’ll think less of you if you use it. ChatGPT, Generative AI, those AI chatbots - all of these things do nothing but rot your brain and make you pathetic in my eyes. In 2025? You’re completely reliant on a product owned by tech billionaires to think for you, write for you, inspire you, in 2025????
“Oh but I only use ___ for ideas/spellcheck/inspiration!!” I kinda don’t care? oh, you’re “only” outsourcing a major part of the creative process that would’ve made your craft unique to you. Writing and creating art has been one of the most intrinsically human activities since the dawn of time, as natural and central to our existence as the creation of the goddamn wheel, and sheer laziness and a culture of instant gratification and entitlement is making swathes of people feel not only justified in outsourcing it but ahead of the curve!!
And genuinely, what is the point of talking to an AI chatbot, since people looove to use my art for it and endlessly make excuses for it. RP exists. Fucking daydreaming exists. You want your favourite blorbo to sext you, there’s literally thousands of xreader fic out there. And if it isn’t, write it yourself! What does a computer’s best approximation of a fictional character do that a human author couldn’t do a thousand times better. Be at your beck and call, probably, but what kind of creative fulfilment is that? What scratch is that itching? What is it but an entirely cyclical ourobouros feeding into your own validation?
I mean, for Christ sakes there are people using ChatGPT as therapists now, lauding it for how it’s better than any human therapist out there because it “empathises”, and no one ever likes to bring up how ChatGPT very notably isn’t an accurate source of information, and often just one that lives for your approval. Bad habits? Eh, what are you talking about, ChatGPT told me it’s fine, because it’s entire existence is to keep you using it longer and facing any hard truths or encountering any real life hard times when it comes to your mental health journey would stop that!
I just don’t get it. Every single one of these people who use these shitty AIs have a favourite book or movie or song, and they are doing nothing by feeding into this hype but ensuring human originality and sincere passion will never be rewarded again. How cute! You turned that photo of you and your boyfriend into ghibli style. I bet Hayao Miyazaki, famously anti-war and pro-environmentalist who instills in all his movies a lifelong dedication to the idea that humanity’s strongest ally is always itself, is so happy that your request and millions of others probably dried up a small ocean’s worth of water, and is only stamping out opportunities for artists everywhere, who could’ve all grown up to be another Miyazaki. Thanks, guys. Great job all round.

Prompts for AI-less Whumptober 2025
It was tough to pick from all you guys' amazing suggestions, but we managed to end up with a lovely list of prompts to work with, AND not a single repeat prompt from last year which we found quite important. Additional info + plain text versions of the prompts can be found under the cut.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
FAQ and Rules
What sort of content can I create for this event?
You can create whatever you want (fic, art, edits, etc). Any fandom is allowed, as well as OC stuff. NSFW is allowed, but please tag your content accordingly! The only thing not allowed is AI-generated content.
Do I need to make 31 things to participate?
Oh heavens no! You can make as much or as little content as you like, skip days when desired, or combine prompts (so for example, write something that covers a prompt from day 1, 2, AND 3). You don't have to do the days in order either, go wild! To be considered a 'completionist', you only have to make sure that at the end of the month, you've covered 31 prompts from 31 different days, but whether you do that in 31 works or just 1 is up to you. Your works can be separate onshots or one continuous fic.
How do I interpret these prompts?
Creativity is the name of the game here! If you don't understand a prompt, feel free to send us an ask about it. However, the important thing is you're free to interpret the prompts however you want. For example, 'heat' could be literal (fever, heatstroke, burn wounds) or figurative (somebody getting heat for something). The dialogue prompts are allowed to be slightly rewritten to fit better for the character whose mouth it's coming out of. As long as you're having fun!
What are these alts about?
If none of the three prompts of a particular day are your cup of tea, you can swap them out for an alt prompt of your choice. This will count as having covered that day for completionists.
How do I tag and is there an AO3 collection?
It suffices to tag your work with #ailesswhumptober for us to see and reblog it! Please also tag nsfw, since we'll be using that tag too. Tagging the day is optional but does help the mods along.
There is an AO3 collection to add your fics to. It will be revealed and linked here closer to the start of the event.
That should be all. If you have any additional questions, check our pinned or hit us up in the ask box. Or join our discord maybe, whumping can be a great group activity!

The thing a lot of people don't get about Lovecraft's cosmic horror is that it's about how it feels when you really grapple with the fact that you live in a dangerous and chaotic world that doesn't really care about you, and where terrible things can happen to you because you are not life's main character. It's not about a fear of the unknown, per se.
It's about feeling out of control and overwhelmed by it all while feeling certain that true relief will never come.
It's about feeling like you're the only one who has really reckoned with this, and feeling like this knowledge is crushing you.
It's about how it feels when you understand that the stories people tell themselves about loving higher powers and ancient advanced civilizations that will one day rise again are just copium.
The weird and scary things in Lovecraft's writings are tools and devices to talk about this all feels - how overwhelming, frustrating, and depressing it can be. If you think his style of horror is dead because he was wrong about X thing or bigoted about Y people, you've missed the point of his work.
Think about how it feels when you know that your life will be impacted by political choices made by people who don't care whether you live or die.
Think about how it feels when you stop and think about the fact that human rights aren't guaranteed, and there is no absolute assurance that things are going to keep progressing in the long run.
Think about how it feels when you know that you live in a world where a new pandemic could do incalculable damage on top of the damage wrought by the last one.
Think about how it feels when you see women on TikTok getting into pseudoscientific and far right stuff because they think it's going to save them.
Think about how it feels when you see guys talking about how the patriarchy must be restored so men can feel strong again.
Think about how it feels when you start to fathom the depths of how deeply racist the US government is and how it's how it's always used this racism to sustain itself.
Think about how it feels when you see people being like "Oh yeah, I can't live without ChatGPT, I need it to write essays/grocery lists/emails" while knowing the costs and impact of generative AI.
Cosmic horror isn't actually about scary things from space. It's about things that are so far beyond your personal ability to control or change that they feel like they might as well come from space. It's not really about feeling scared because you can't understand things, it's about feeling scared because they feel so immensely overwhelming and you feel powerless to really do anything about it.
