"So, this 'other Legault' you've met-" The thief appears like a shadow, hovering behind the prince's shoulder before falling into proper step beside him. He gives the young man a sharp grin.
"-Is he as much of a fox as I supposedly am?"
He laughs, brushing his own question aside with a wave of his hand.
"Joking, of course. But I am curious about how you got to know each other. Seems he's led quite the interesting life, even before he met you."
Legault's silent arrival was one Alfonse failed to notice until the assassin decided it was time to open his mouth. The prince jumped slightly, eyes wild as he whipped around to face Legault. A small sigh left his frame as he realized there was no danger, a smile forced onto his features, though it was easily identifiable as fraudulent from the way it failed to reach his eyes.
"I think he would like to call himself that, yes," Alfonse answered, satisfied that he had evaded that little implication the specific wording carried with it. "He had the same face as you, so take from that what you will. As for how I met him... well, that's a complicated question in ways you might not expect. I did say I owe you an explanation, though, so I suppose the question now is whether you're prepared to listen."
Once again he smiled at Legault, and once again it was a clearly forced expression. He wanted to seem as welcoming as he could, though it didn't quite succeed. Alfonse was trying to form any answers he might have to give in advance of the relevant questions being asked; he could not fully focus on appearances and these thoughts both. Alfonse preferred to go into every situation as prepared as he possibly could be, and social interaction was not exempt from that.
"I fully admit that my story may sound difficult to believe," Alfonse added, "but I assure you that I will be telling the truth. The place from which I come can be difficult to fathom for those outside of it."

[ MINT CANDY ]
"Hey, bookworm. Looking to finish your bracelet?"
Legault slips both a shell charm and a wrapped candy into the young man's palm with a wink.
"I think the band is going to play a slow song soon. The girl who came in on your arm might appreciate if you had fresh breath before you pull her close the dance floor, mm?"
Erk jumps slightly as the man approaches and slips two small somethings into his hand. He recognizes him, as much as anyone could recognize someone they had fought alongside but didn't know well.
Glancing at his palm, he sees the charm and the candy. The young Mage General didn't care about the bracelet and all of the charms that came with it. In fact, he'd made it a point to avoid the ordeal altogether. Too many people, and too much interaction with them for his liking.
As for the candy...
He feels his cheeks flush at the other man's words, "My breath is fine, thank you very much, Sir Legault!"
Why should he take advice from a shifty man like him anyway? Erk knew how to deal with Serra, and all of her intricacies. What did Sir Legault know? Nothing, that's what!
"Have a nice night, Sir Legault," The young man turns on his heel and strides away as quickly as he can, "Do try not to bother too many people, if you can."

"Of course, you seem like a man who is confident enough to admit when something is truly for yourself rather than a friend," Nasir chuckles, leaning slightly over the counter to get a better look at the man in the gentle mixture of light and shadows of the morning sun reflecting through the windows of the shop.
"Many people say that I am strange. That is not a new fact," Nasir knows that he is unlike anyone else in Goldoa, that had always been a fact from the day he first entered Dheginsea's service, and even before then. He was odd, even to his fellow dragons, that was nothing but fact.
"I am certainly not stalling though. Give me a moment, I know where they are. Don't try to steal anything while I'm gone," Nasir says with a smirk, ducking out from behind the counter and heading towards the backroom to search for the box of swords. He shouts back at the last second, "I mean it! I'll hear it if you even think of trying!"

A Quebec committee tasked with advising the government on gender identity issues has penned a 280-page report addressing various matters tied to the 2SLGBTQ+ community. The report, which is extensive in scope, largely recommends further study and consultation concerning the support and care given to trans people. Among its concrete recommendations, however, is a suggestion that schools in Quebec maintain gendered bathrooms, but also add gender-neutral bathrooms. [...] Victoria Legault, executive director of Aide aux Trans du Québec, said the report was "steeped in misogyny." She said the report singled out trans women and girls on subjects like sports and access to bathrooms, but in reality, she said they are most likely to be victims of violence. "It is very heartbreaking that they kind of point a finger at us and portray trans women as being a menace or threat," she said. Celeste Trianon, a trans advocate, believes the report was purposely designed to be written by non-experts who don't understand the concerns of trans people. She said, though the report defends sex education and the role of schools in making trans youth feel welcomed, it misses the mark for her in other areas. She said the report's language around trans people's access to bathrooms, for instance, seemed to open the door to future anti-trans legislation.

The "religious liberty" angle for overturning the overturning of Dobbs

Frank Wilhoit’s definition of “conservativism” remains a classic:
There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.
https://crookedtimber.org/2018/03/21/liberals-against-progressives/#comment-729288
Conservativism is, in other words, the opposite of the rule of law, which is the idea that the law applies equally to all. Many of America’s most predictably weird moments live in the tension between the rule of law and the conservative’s demand to be protected — but not bound — by the law.
Think of the Republican women of Florida whose full-throated support for the perfomatively cruel and bigoted policies of Ron Desantis turned to howls of outrage when the governor signed a law “overhauling alimony” (for “overhauling,” read “eliminating”):
https://www.orlandoweekly.com/news/this-is-a-death-sentence-for-me-florida-republican-women-say-they-will-switch-parties-after-desantis-approves-alimony-law-34563230
This is real leopards-eating-people’s-faces-party stuff, and it’s the only source of mirth in an otherwise grim situation.
But out of the culture-war bullshit backfires, none is so sweet and delicious as the religious liberty self-own. You see, under the rule of law, if some special consideration is owed to a group due to religious liberty, that means all religions. Of course, Wilhoit-drunk conservatives imagine that “religious liberty” is a synonym for Christian liberty, and that other groups will never demand the same carve outs.
Remember when Louisiana decided spend tax dollars to fund “religious” schools under a charter school program, only to discover — to their Islamaphobic horror — that this would allow Muslim schools to get public subsidies, too?
https://www.huffpost.com/entry/louisiana_n_1593995
(They could have tried the Quebec gambit, where hijabs and yarmulkes are classed as “religious” and therefore banned for public servants and publicly owned premises, while crosses are treated as “cultural” and therefore exempted — that’s some primo Wilhoitism right there)
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/quebec-francois-legault-crucifix-religious-symbols-1.4858757
The Satanic Temple has perfected the art of hoisting religious liberty on its own petard. Are you a state lawmaker hoping to put a giant Ten Commandments on the statehouse lawn? Go ahead, have some religious liberty — just don’t be surprised when the Satanic Temple shows up to put a giant statue of Baphomet next to it:
https://www.npr.org/2018/08/17/639726472/satanic-temple-protests-ten-commandments-monument-with-goat-headed-statue
Wanna put a Christmas tree in the state capitol building? Sure, but there’s gonna be a Satanic winter festival display right next to it:
https://katv.com/news/offbeat/satanic-temple-display-installed-at-illinois-capitol-next-to-nativity-scene-menorah-decorations-snake-serpent-satanic-temple-springfield-christmas-tree
And now we come to Dobbs, and the cowardly, illegitimate Supreme Court’s cowardly, illegitimate overturning of Roe v Wade, a move that was immediately followed by “red” states implementing total, or near-total bans on abortion:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/06/15/paid-medical-disinformation/#crisis-pregnancy-centers
These same states are hotbeds of “religious liberty” nonsense. In about a dozen of these states, Jews, Christians, and Satanists are filing “religious liberty” challenges to the abortion ban. In Indiana, the Hoosier Jews For Choice have joined with other religious groups in a class action, to argue that the “religious freedom” law that Mike Pence signed as governor protects their right to an abortion:
https://www.politico.com/news/2023/06/21/legal-strategy-that-could-topple-abortion-bans-00102468
Their case builds on precedents from the covid lockdowns, like decisions that said that if secular exceptions to lockdown rules or vaccine mandates existed, then states had to also allow religious exemptions. That opens the door for religious exemptions to abortion bans — if there’s a secular rule that permits abortion in the instance of incest or rape, then faith-based exceptions must be permitted, too.
Some of the challenges to abortion rules seek to carve out religious exemptions, but others seek to overturn the abortion rules altogether, because the lawmakers who passed them explicitly justified them in the name of fusing Christian “values” with secular law, a First Amendment no-no.
As Rabbi James Bennett told Politico’s Alice Ollstein: “They’re entitled to their interpretation of when life begins, but they’re not entitled to have the exclusive one.”
In Florida, a group of Jewish, Buddhist, Episcopalian, Universalists and United Church clerics are challenging the “aiding and abetting” law because it restricts the things they can say from the pulpit — a classic religious liberty gambit.
Kentucky’s challenge comes from three Jewish women whose faith holds that life begins “with the first breath.” Lead plaintiff Lisa Sobel described how Kentucky’s law bars her from seeking IVF treatment, because she could face criminal charges for “discarding non-viable embryos” created during the process.
Then there’s the Satanic Temple, in court in Texas, Idaho and Indiana. The Satanists say that abortion is a religious ritual, and argue that the state can’t limit their access to it.
These challenges all rest on state religious liberty laws. What will happen when some or all of these reach the Supreme Court? It’s a risky gambit. This is the court that upheld Trump’s Muslim ban and the right of a Christian baker to refuse to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple. It’s a court that loves Wilhoit’s “in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.”
It’s a court that’s so Wilhoit-drunk, it’s willing to grant religious liberty to bigots who worry about imaginary same-sex couples:
https://newrepublic.com/article/173987/mysterious-case-fake-gay-marriage-website-real-straight-man-supreme-court
But in the meantime, the bigots and religious maniacs who want to preserve “religious liberty” while banning abortion are walking a fine line. The Becket Fund, which funded the Hobby Lobby case (establishing that religious maniacs can deny health care to their employees if their imaginary friends object), has filed a brief in one case arguing that the religious convictions of people arguing for a right to abortion aren’t really sincere in their beliefs:
https://becketnewsite.s3.amazonaws.com/20230118184008/Individual-Members-v.-Anonymous-Planitiff-Amicus-Brief.pdf
This is quite a line for Becket to have crossed — religious liberty trufans hate it when courts demand that people seeking religious exemptions prove that their beliefs are sincerely held.
Not only is Becket throwing its opposition to “sincerely held belief” tests under the bus, they’re doing so for nothing. Jewish religious texts clearly state that life begins at the first breath, and that the life of a pregnant person takes precedence over the life of the fetus in their uterus.
The kicker in Ollstein’s great article comes in the last paragraph, delivered by Columbia Law’s Elizabeth Reiner Platt, who runs the Law, Rights, and Religion Project:
The idea of reproductive rights as a religious liberty issue is absolutely not something that came from lawyers. It’s how faith communities themselves have been talking about their approach to reproductive rights for literally decades.
The Clarion Science Fiction Writers’ Workshop (I’m a grad, instructor and board member) is having its fundraiser auction to help defray tuition. I’ve donated a “Tuckerization” — the right to name a character in a future novel:

Darkness has fallen, leaving an eerie quiet to their surroundings, crackles of flame and leaves in the light breeze. While the others were out following trails and gathering supplies, someone had to take up the task of their shelter’s defense; so had Selena, acutely aware of her own sharpness, her wont to defend with violence.
It is a strange truth to realize, that where her words failed her, she would always possess might. (She would like to think she has not gone too far for it, but she remembers fire and wonders if another would’ve chosen differently; if another might’ve strived to find another way.)
Regardless.
round 1 watch: SELENA. action 1: CHOP WOOD. (campfire hp +2)
Fresh logs are deposited into the fire, the blaze growing steady but carefully contained. It was a brighter light now, but not so much so that she thought it would make a difference. (Small steps, she supposes. Consistency is better than things getting worse.)
“I came across some plains while out,” she announces, dusting off her hands and the miscellaneous dirt that had gotten on her tunic. (Little to be done, but small steps.) “A river as well, but I’d advise against going there.”
“Some kind of draconic crest beast seemed to be roaming the area. Not the sort of thing we’d want to risk bringing back to base.”
action 2: ENEMY SCOUT (spotted: MASKED MAN, CREST BEAST (DRAGON); CREST BEAST (DRAGON) discarded) action 3: LOCATION SCOUT (scouted: RIVERBEND, PLAINS; PLAINS selected)

Apparently the supports between Kent and Heath involve Heath expressing interest in becoming a knight of Caelin, and Kent putting his best foot forward (gushing about Lady Lyn) in order to recruit Heath, and ultimately convincing him that Lord Hausen and Lady Lyn are worth swearing fealty to.
Which opens up ALL kinds of story opportunities. Imagine Heath joining the Caelin Knights, and Legault following after him, but not telling him. And Lyn catches Legault sneaking about, as she’s the one who recruited Legault to their merry band of misfits to begin with. Imagine her having a few convos with Legault, learning he’s hanging around trying to figure out how to woo Heath, and they sort of spark a friendship. She helps wingman for Legault, and eventually Legault likes her enough to become her spy (the way Matthew and Leila are spies for Ostia).

Lambert knew the Abyss rather well, by now. He knew which areas were more likely to have traffic and which were more desert in the usual afternoon. He also knew very well that some stragglers liked to roam areas at random by themselves- by now the professor had gotten to know some of them even. One was a researcher wanting a quiet spot, the other a warlock who was rather cagey about her honestly shady as hell rituals, then a trickster who Lambert was very much convinced that the guy was trafficking something but it wasn’t his business, and so on. As always, under the rules of the Abyss, one was to never pry or ask too many questions. Simply move on.
That being said, the apprehension that someone would most likely spot them kept him uneasy the entire time. Even as he bit down on Matthias’ skin and tried to relax into the other man’s scent mixed with iron, it was…impossible.
Even more when someone actually showed up. A straggler that Lambert hadn’t met before. Then, his blood ran cold as he feigned being reactionless, keeping his face hidden against Matthias’ shoulder as their exchange happened. Good, now he’d have to search this dude later and threaten him into silence lest his reputation is graced with a new accolade- being into blood play and love bites with other men in the dark. That was everything he needed.
Lambert bit into his own tongue as finally the spotter left, before lifting his head to lock eyes with Matthias. “Had it not been for the laws of this land, I would have killed you right then and there.” His cheeks were blazing red- rightfully so! “I desperately want to, in fact! You are a lucky man, Raoul.” The threats slipped through gritted teeth before Lambert decided that he didn’t even want to listen to Matthias’ defense, and instead went for a kiss.
[ 𝐂𝐎𝐏𝐏𝐄𝐑 ] ― sender bites receiver hard enough to draw blood (nsfw bats eyelashes 🥺) Finding an empty hall was an art he had long mastered. Between those of Garreg Mach or Castle Fhirdiad, he knew most places. The Abyss was new territory, any slip up would have a passerby turn the corner and catch them. Yet teeth sunk into skin and savored the taste. Careful not to get too close, skirting around the edges of the places he knew would raise the other man’s voice. “We’re far from Fhirdiad, and you’ve no title you must hide to preserve. It’s been far too long since we played this game.”
(no longer accepting) lowkey-nsfw, just in case! thyre just freaky ig
His back hit the wall with a sigh- interrupted as teeth dug into his skin and pain flared up his neck and down his clavicles. It was an interesting position to be in, cornered in one of the Abyss’ many twisting hallways, just away from a torch’s warm light, plagued by the thrilling notion that the sound of steps approaching could range from a stray cat or dog all the way to a passersby catching them red handed. At worst, it could even be one of his students- a situation Lambert couldn’t even begin to imagine as to how he could explain to them.
Because the fiery pain from the bite didn’t call upon his crest for retaliation- to push the threat away and choose between escaping or ensuring there is no longer anything to be concerned by.
No, that pain sent his heart racing.
He had long forgotten how he even found himself in this situation. A walk with Matthias turned into tugging one another into spiraling corridors, hands pulling and yanking until his chestplate was detached and the buttons of his collar were pulled open to expose skin. Sighs and grunts and everything in between as Lambert tried to choose between reprimanding his companion for being a ridiculous, impatient deviant who couldn’t at least drag him to his own room and basking in the whole ordeal while at least trying to keep an eye out for the end of the hall.
“Thank you for the reminder.” His words had bite, but more of a tease than actual threat. “Is this how you hope…to drag your king back? By the teeth?”
Red-bitten lips curled into a smirk as he reached Matthias’ ear. “Like a dog?”
Now it was his turn to dye his lips crimson, digging onto the other man’s neck.

"Heard it was your birthday." Legault's arrival is as abrupt as usual. He presents a book bound in azure-dyed leather with a quill rested atop it, both held out toward the young traveler in an offering.
"Here. Figured you need to take plenty of notes on this strange world of ours."
"It's my birthday?" Alfonse repeated dumbly, staring at the gift offered by the thief. There had to be some kind of trick here, right? A quick check of the calendar in Alfonse's notebook confirmed that no, it was indeed his birthday. Legault was entirely correct. He had failed to notice the days passing, especially with the chaos Garreg Mach had endured. When had Legault even had the time to find this? He hadn't expected Legault to go out of his way for him of all people. Was there some kind of catch? Did Legault expect something in return, perhaps?
"Er... thank you," Alfonse mumbled, gingerly taking the book from Legault. His own notebook was getting rather full with his ramblings, so it certainly wasn't an unwelcome gift. It was fine as well, nicer than anything Alfonse would choose to get for himself. Despite himself, Alfonse smiled serenely as he looked down in it, running a thumb across the leather surface. Perhaps this was even the first time Legault had seen the prince smile freely, no circumstances forcing the expression or tainting it with nervousness.
"Thank you, Legault," Alfonse repeated. "I'm not good at accepting gifts, but... thank you. Truly."

legault in top ten of All characters is so based. they cooked so hard with him, the entire black fang subplot is so narratively rich feeling bc of him
I didn't realize how deep this dude is until I delved in his supports and his boss quotes. Like his support with Nino is so sad but it makes sense why he didn't want to take Nino along with him after the game.
Also he exudes so much bisexual swag

YOUR CHARACTER IN FIVE QUOTES!
( repost, do not reblog. ) Tell us your favorite quotes from your character. Give us an idea of who they are by five things they’ve said. Then tag your friends.
"I, with this hand, I…took her life. That’s when it started. That’s when I started thinking about getting out."
- Legault & Matthew A Support
"You’ve gotten soft, Angel of Death. If someone held Nino hostage, you’d throw down your sword. You were the strongest assassin around. Now, you have a fatal chink in your armor. You’ve become human, but that makes you less perfect. Someday…you’ll die. No doubt trying to protect the girl."
- Legault & Jaffar A support
"No, child. This life is not for you. You’ll be much better off without me…" [...] "I’ll only say this once, Nino. If you’re around, you’ll only slow me down. Lloyd and Linus will protect you, I’m sure. But I’m not as tough as they are. I don’t have their power or their courage. I wouldn’t be able to protect you…"
- Legault & Nino A Support
"Hm? Must be this thing called 'love', you know? Where are you going? I’m joking!! Get back here. Just let it go, all right? Come on, I like you. Even on the run, you’re true to your principles. You’re recklessly honest. That’s from someone who simply cannot do that…"
- Legault & Heath A Support
“……All right. I see. Nothing’s going to change. I knew that, and yet… I had to try. It’s a bad habit of mine.” / “I knew this would happen. Nothing’s going to change. I knew it, and yet here I am. I couldn’t leave well enough alone… I’m a fool.”
- Vs. Lloyd OR Vs. Linus in Cog of Destiny
Mun Commentary Interlude: One of the things I see as core to Legault's character is his deep regret from killing Aesha (the woman mentioned in his Matthew support quote) transforming into this inner drive that I can best label as "whatever I do, I've learned that I have to live with myself afterward." This is why he admires Heath for sticking to his principles from the get-go instead of needing the guilt of going through with heinous orders to recognize how impossible it is to keep living the same way afterward. It's why he has to try to reach out to the Reeds, even knowing that he won't sway them. He wouldn't be able to live with himself if he didn't try. The Jaffar and Nino supports are there because I think it's interesting how he asserts to love is to be human, but to be human is a deadly weakness to an assassin—and how he so clearly has loved and continued to love [he loves the Reeds, he loves Nino, he loves what the Black Fang used to be, he loves Heath (a flirtatious exaggeration, but one grounded in genuine admiration whether romantic or not)], and so clearly considers himself weak. And because of that weakness, he doesn't see himself as fit to care for Nino, even if he cares about her.
in conclusion: LEGAULT i think about him
(tagging: @ everyone !! whoever wants to do this fun exercise! do it!!)
#[ ooc ]#[ dash game ]#// also: idk why legault says 'lloyd and linus will protect you' when she is out of the fang for good +#// the reeds are almost definitely dead when u get this support but i presume it's just a Wrong Verb Tense issue maybe? LMAO#// 'they would protect you but i can't' still works. that's still the intent there

The premiers of Manitoba and Newfoundland and Labrador are so far the only leaders to publicly volunteer to take in asylum seekers to ease pressure on Quebec, despite a joint call from all premiers to distribute them more evenly across the country.
During a news conference Wednesday in Halifax at the close of a three-day summit of Canada's premiers, several provincial leaders said they are facing similar pressures from immigration, and would not commit to accepting more people.
Quebec Premier François Legault says his province can no longer support the high number of asylum seekers who have arrived in recent years. On Wednesday, he said "several" provinces are open to accepting more refugees claimants from Quebec, but he wouldn't name them.
Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew said he'd be prepared to welcome more asylum seekers, especially francophones, but only if the province gets more money from the federal government.
"We have the housing needs, the health-care and social needs in Manitoba, and so … we really do need the federal government, who has the fiscal resources to be able to move the needle here, to do so," he said.
Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey also said he told Legault his province would be "happy to proportionally share" the number of newcomers seeking refugee status.

Hey! Wanna attract pollinators?
Do you live in Ohio (particularly northeast Ohio)? Here's a list of wildflowers you can plant that bring in pollinators, some color combination ideas for those flowers, a small list of reasons why you should plant wildflowers for pollinators, other ways you can increase local pollinattors, and some resources you can utilize.
Disclaimer: Please only use this guide if you live in Ohio! Some of the plant species listed are invasive in some states, but are fine in Ohio. Please also consider, many plants on this list are toxic to animals! Please be mindful of the wildlife around you that also needs supporting. Keep your wildflowers and pollinator areas to select parts of your yard or property and do not spread these seeds in the wild. Ex. Milkweed is toxic to most animals and will kill them.
Here is a list of plants that pollinators love by color:
Butterfly Milkweed
Lanceleaf Tickseed
Cup Plant
Showy Goldenrod
New England Aster
Purple Prairie Clover
Field Thistle
Purple Coneflower
Here are some color combos for garden inspo:
Photos of the plants included (and the sources for said photos, none of which were snapped by me, in order at the bottom of the post)
Orange and yellow (all full sun) - Butterfly milkweed, Cup Plant, Showy Goldenrod

Yellow and purple (all full sun) - Cup Plant, Lanceleaf Tickseed, New England Aster

Yellow and pink (all full sun) - Cup Plant, Showy Goldenrod, Purple Coneflower

Purple and pink (all full sun) - Purple Coneflower, Purple Prarie Clover, New England Aster

Orange and pink (all full sun) - Butterfly Milkweed, Purple Coneflower, Field Thistle

Why you should plant wildflowers:
