A new direction I’ve been exploring in the studio. I love my walks through the bush. I get fed in so many ways paying attention to the beauty that surrounds me there. I find so many treasures that have fallen from trees, seed pods, bark and loads of flowers that the cockatoos have snapped off at full bloom. I’ve had a particular pull to banksia pods. Their organic forms and slit like eyes are so fascinating. I always take a select few back with me to the studio to ponder over them. I keep them on my work bench so I can marvel at their contours and the way the openings hold the seeds inside. This is what I’ve been playing with this year. Organic forms and pushing the surface of the clay to sometimes busting point. I created this body of work for a group exhibition that was cancelled due to Covid. Now they sit on my shelves like sentinels watching me. They are like precious objects, signaling/marking a new direction for me, in my work. So I’m holding onto them for a while and they can watch me and I them. I'm liking this one, simple but effective. I still need to find a way to break up any lines so the ripples will look organic, and to graduate colour within this technique. I am not afraid to admit that there are times when I feel like I have no clue what I am doing 😣 I am developing my skills, learning a new craft. Yes I have pattern making and machine stitching experience, but I have very little knowledge in hand-sewing, sculpture or surface manipulation. I am experimenting with scraps, to try to find a way to represent a medium length coat. I'm looking for depth, to distinguish it from my other highly textured makes. I also want it to look considered, but still with a scruffy feel.
