Hi dream, i have a question about you Swap au tmnt2012

Do the turtles still have their classic weapons or are they swapped? And if they do keep them, do they have any new meaning?

So the turtles don't swap weapons in this au actually! It was mostly as a visual cue to show that "hey, these are still the same turtle boys we all know and love, just in a different world and different circumstances."

When it comes to the meaning of each weapon, I had to dive a bit deeper into the world of martial arts. . . and into swap Splinter's teaching methods and intentions with each of the boys.

The katana symbolizes strength, honor and discipline. It's a dangerous weapon that can easily take the lives of its enemies. In the classic, I think that it was meant as a lesson for Leonardo to consider his role as leader. He has to take things seriously, because for him, carelessness in battle, (whether in his orders or in his attacks,) can easily cause death.

Swap Leo is the most ruthless of the turtles; he wouldn't hesitate to kill, though he doesn't like to. Deep down, he wants to honor the Hamato (which he hates about himself.) Splinter's still his dad. Kids want to make their parents proud, and Splinter is all too aware of this fact. By giving Leo the katana, it only wraps him further around Splinter's finger. He's a hot head who defies orders, sometimes on purpose, sometimes on accident, and the honor of the Hamato on Leonardo's shoulders is a weight that helps trap him under Splinter's control.

A japanese bō is often symbolic of adaptability and resourcefulness. In the original, Donatello tends to stick to one way without allowing other ideas and plans even be a second thought. The simplicity of the bō forces him to think outside of the box. Science may be immovable to him, but there's no one singular answer in a fight.

I like to think this was also part of the reason why swap Donnie was given this weapon. Splinter taught the turtles that a fight ends with one victor, and the other dead. At first glance, the bō might be seen as a joke. Enemies would be quick to underestimate Don, and he can use that to his advantage. He was trained to use the element of surprise to his advantage, and the bō he uses, with a hidden blade at its tip, is full of surprises, if he uses it creatively.

Nunchucks are infamous for their complexity, and wielding them is a sign of agility and precision. I'd think that this was given to Michelangelo to help center his mind and to teach him focus, as the classic is a pretty scatterbrained sweetheart. Nunchucks force him not to take combat lightly, and to strike intentionally.

Now swap Mikey is a mad genius, and can easily get lost in his own world of scientific fantasy, sometimes even in the middle of battle. In a life and death case scenario, that can be suicidal. Nunchucks force Michelangelo to stay grounded in the moment, to think about each of his attacks. Of course, the side effect was that it focused his cold-blooded ingenuity into his strikes, since he can't use it to think up of new inventions.

Sais are a weapon that can be used in both defense and offense, and are traitionally used in peace-keeping. In the original, I would think it was more meant for defense, a means to help Raphael learn to control his anger, to learn how to keep the right mindset while in the midst of a fight.

For swap Raph? Offense was Splinter's intention. Raphael is the strongest, the best fighter, the most skilled. Or he should be, if his heart didn't keep getting in the way. He couldn't hurt someone if he was held at gun point. It's not who he is. And it infuriates Splinter. So much potential, completely waisted. Sais are a close range weapon, so if Raphael is going to dish out the final blow, he has to make it personal. The weapon is Splinter trying to turn his son into the killer he wants him to be, the killer that Raph is just too scared to become.

Apparently when my younger brother was just born my mom found him napping with his blanket fully covering him, and she pulled back the sheet (worried he couldn't breathe or something) to find him fully awake staring at her. It scared the shit out of her and she still talks about it to this day lmao

posting some mind swap doodles to prove im still alive, so have a few headcanons :D

- Leo in Mikey's body is pure chaos, he has no boundaries when it comes to modifications to "his" body in order to feel more comfortable in his own skin. For example, he gave himself his old markings to cover up Mikey's spots (only around the eyes tho, the arm and leg markings would take way more time.) He loves using Mikey's mystic powers/weapons at first, but eventually feels too weird about it and switches to his own weapons/gear to cope

- Mikey reins him in whenever he gets a little too confident in using his mystic powers though. Mikey is always hovering nearby to make sure Leo doesn't decide to go overboard, fully aware of Leo's lack of awareness when it comes to his physical limits, let alone when he's in someone else's body

- Raph is on the opposite side of the spectrum as far as modifications go, only willing to give Donnie his tech back and wear arm wraps to feel more like himself.

- The only tech he has to keep is the battle shell, especially after realizing just how fragile Donnie's body really is. He becomes refuses to take it off for days at a time, and when he does finally take it off, he's extremely paranoid and puts himself in the safest spot possible: his own room, bundled up in pillows and blankets.

- He also is woefully ignorant in how the battle shell is operated, so it goes haywire pretty often in the beginning. Donnie has to be nearby and ready to be damage control for a long time before Raph becomes confident enough to operate the battle shell's most basic functions.

I rewatched TMNT 2012 and may or may not have created a swap AU.

But because it's me, I decided to have a little fun with it.

So Raph has Mikey's role

Mikey has Donnie's role

Donnie has Leo's role

and Leo has Raph's role :)

And because Raph is now Mikey, that means Slash is Leatherhead!

Splinter's role was swapped with Shredder, meaning the turtles grew up in a not so pleasant household.

Did Raph inherit Mikey's arson abilities in the talent swap, or is that magic a Mikey-specific thing? For example, would they have to worry about Mikey spawning tornadoes now?

oh yeah absolutely

--and yeah, it's a Mikey-specific thing! their talents might get swapped, but their power levels stay the same-- that's why Donnie's having such a hard time with keeping animals and bugs away! and also why Raph wouldn't be able to start any fires, but Mikey could absolutely use a Fast-Flier's wind abilities to. perhaps. start a supercell tornado in the middle of the hidden hollow by accident
