Advanced searching on xiv.quest!

Using this Firefox extension!

My FFXIV script site works great if you already know exactly what you're looking for, but here's a solution for if you want to find something a little more vague. For example, the search in the screenshot says "find any time anyone except Urianger says "thou."

If you're familiar with regular expressions, this'll be pretty self-explanatory. If you're not, I'm putting a crash course under the cut to help you use this extension on the site!

Here's a basic setup for any and all searches you'll want to do:

Make sure all checkboxes are ticked (case sensitivity optional).

Put ^.* at the beginning of your expression (where it says "Type Regex here") to say "I want to see everything from the beginning of the line to my result!"

Put .*$ at the end of your expression to say "I want to see everything from my result to the end of the line!"

Type $0\n\n in the "custom template" field to put a line break in between results.

With that, you can start doing basic searches:

...but to do more complicated stuff is a little more work. Here's a small list of searches I've used myself — the useful ones written out below for those who don't want to leave Tumblr or if the link breaks, but this link to Google sheets is easier to read.

To find a specific character saying a specific word:

Format: Name:.*word

Example search: ^.*Zenos yae Galvus:.*beast.*$

Example result: Zenos yae Galvus: Man should fight for the joy of it. To live, to eat, to breed─lesser beasts snap and howl at one another for this. Only man has the wisdom and the clarity to embrace violence for its own sake.

To find a specific word said by anyone except a specific character:

Format: (?<!Name):.*word

Example search: ^.*(?<!Urianger):.*\bthou\b.*$

Example result: Ifrit: Thou art strong, mortal!

Note: Note the \b in the example search! It's not mandatory, but is very helpful in this particular case. It marks a "word boundary," so that you get results for "thou" but not for "thoughts" or "without" (basically like the "Whole Words" option in regular Ctrl+F). You can use this whenever/wherever it's helpful. Like it's not used in the above example with Zenos because I wanted it to return the plural "beasts."

To find anything said by a specific character or any of their aliases:

Format: Name\)?:

Example search: ^.*Vrtra\)?:.*$

Example result: Varshahn (Vrtra): That is all I need know of thee for now.

Note: You have to have the "Show real names" option enabled on the website for this to work!

To find any two words used in the same line:

Format: (?=.*\bword1\b)(?=.*\bword2\b)

Example search: ^.*(?=.*\bFeo Ul\b)(?=.*\bthey\b).*$

Example result: G'raha Tia: By the way, have you spoken with Feo Ul of late? Some days ago, they appeared to me in a dream─of the sleeping persuasion, that is.

Note: This looks so complicated because it will find the words in either order! Putting "they" before "Feo Ul" would work exactly the same.

You can keep these examples as templates to use for yourself without having to understand how they work by using the extension's built-in Profiles, and just swapping in the words you want to search:

...but the possibilities really open up if you want to learn how they work! You can combine the above examples in different ways and built your own profiles. I have other tabs in the Google Sheet linked above for learning how to use regex, and the Firefox extension itself includes a cheat sheet under the "Help" button which is super useful!

Came across this interesting tutorial today which caught my attention because it starts exactly like my favorite 16 pg zine format. But then it does something completely different with the covers and the spine. Two of the "pages" are used up on the accordion-folded binding, making this a 14 pg (12 pg + 2 covers) booklet.

I made a test booklet to see if there was maybe any benefit to it. I think the accordion spine could be aesthetically pleasing. And this person does point out that if you want to make a longer booklet, you can glue two or more together by the spine, which I think is cool. You can cut some pages apart to make more pages, which you can't do with a normal folded minizine. But on the other hand, this format requires some glue or stitching to keep it stable, making it a bit more labor- and materials-intensive. Overall, I still prefer the single-sided 16 pg format I've used before.

Reason or meaning of name: Layla was born in during the night and her father Waoud thought it was more than appropriate to name her after the Old Hannish word for night.

Character’s nickname: Layla has a lot of nicknames, given to her by many characters, be it Uplander, Sapling, Old Girl or Sinner...

Reason for nickname: As an adventurer Layla spends a lot of time with all kinds of people and thanks to her tiredless efforts to help the people of Hydaelyn, people has dubbed her many names, not all of them are flattering however...

Birth date: 23nd Sun of the Third Umbral Moon

Physical appearance

Age: late 20s as of Endwalker 6.5

How old does he/she appear: Mid 20s at least. She does not appear to be much younger.

Weight: A secret.

Height: 158 cm. Slightly shorter than her most of her fellow Midlander peers...

Body build: Fit with very strong arms, though Layla tries not to build too many muscles.

Shape of face: Slim, though Layla wishes she had dimples and secretly admires those who have round faces with cute dimples.

Type of hair: Very curly, Layla takes great care of her locks and buys all kinds of natural oils to carefully maintain her hair on a daily basis.

Hairstyle: These days she mostly ties her together with a bow that was gifted to her by Y'shtola *points at lexentail hair*

Overall attractiveness: People describe Layla as very beautiful with her facial features being her most charming part. Layla however, is doubting her own looks the more battle she fights.

Usual fashion of dress: Loves to wear dresses in her free time but pefers light armor in battle. The easier she can move, the better.

Jewelry or accessories: Used to wear a lot of gold jewelry before her days as the Warrior of Light, though nowadays Layla has decided to wear more modest accessories made of glass.

Personality

Good personality traits: Layla is kind, polite and considerate to most people she meets. She often offers them her friendship and companionship after a short while. People often note that she is very risilient, especially given what she has experienced in life so far.

Bad personality traits: Her kindness is also a weakness. She tends to trust people blindly and only realizes when she lets the wrong people into her life when it is too late. The Scions know that Layla is also quite scatterbrained, disorganized and vain.

Mood character is most often in: Layla is mostly a very happy person. It is rare for her to be in a terrible mood and when she is, it will not take much for her mood to improve.

Sense of humor: Rarely understands sarcasm. Due to her strict upbringing in Radz-at-han's high society, Layla struggles to connect to her peers at time, be it during her childhood back in Thavnair or as a member of the Scions.

Character’s greatest joy in life: Returning to Old Sharlayan after she and many adventurers have defeated the Endsinger with the help of the Scions. Layla loves Eitherys and the last thing she has wanted was for this world to vanish forever. So, seeing all the people waiting for the Scions made Layla realize that she has never been happier in her life.

Character’s greatest fear: Losing her parents.

Why?: Layla has grown up as the daughter as a notable alchemist from Radz-at-han and an energetic monk and refugee from Ala Mhigo. As her father is the leader of an established leader of an alchemist group with an esteemed bloodline that highly respected by the Satrap and the Radiant Host, Layla was expected to follow in her father's footsteps. Though Layla had different plans for her future and spent her time with the dancers in hopes to become one of them. Her parents allowed her to train with the dancers on the condition that she becomes a full fledged alchemist on her 19th namesday but she ran away from home on that very day. She eventually arrived in Ul'dah shortly before the events of 1.0 and only returned to Thavnair in Endwalker. And when she came back, the Final Days ravaged the lands of Thavnair...

What single event would most throw this character’s life into complete turmoil?: The Umbral Seventh Calamity was the event that shaped Layla's fate forever. Until then, Layla hoped she could return to her home anytime but thanks to the Calamity, she was left penniless and was unable to leave Ul'dah for the time being...

Character is most at ease when: During quiet times, whenever Layla gets to relax in her room in the Rising Stones or her home in Radz-at-han.

Most ill at ease when: Seeing the full extent of the Final Days and witnessing people turning into Blasphemies...

Enraged when: The moment when G'raha told Layla to head to Palaka's Stand with the twins. How can she leave her hometown knowing her family is there after reuniting with them after almost a decade? What if they get killed while she is far away?

Depressed or sad when: Everytime an ally dies. Layla cannot handle grief, though her heart broke the most when Haurchefant died as they were lovers...

Priorities: Traveling the world!

Life philosophy: If you do good, good things will come to you.

If granted one wish, it would be: Currently has no wishes, whatever Layla wishes for is out of her reach.

Character’s soft spot: Children! Layla adores them and spent a lot of time with the Doman kids back in Rising Stones during A Realm Reborn and Heavensward.

Is this soft spot obvious to others?: Very much.

Greatest strength: Layla's biggest asset is her physical strength and her ability to easily learn any martial arts as well as manipulating either, allowing her to learn all kinds of magicks. One might speculate that this is part of Layla's talents, others claim that this part of the Blessing of Light, granted to her by Hydaelyn...

Greatest vulnerability or weakness: Layla is very naive and tends to trust people very quickly. This lead her into many dangerous situations. Layla often has a hard time connecting with people as well, since she behaves very differently than her peers (comparable to Alphinaud) but she still tries to befriend those she adores. Layla also lacks a lot of domestic skills as well as manual skills due to her upbringing. Working with her hands outside of combat is extremely difficult for her at times.

Biggest regret: In hinsight Layla greatly regrets ever running away from home to escape her duties. She was ill prepared to live outside of her comfort zone and she regrets ever running away from her parents who despite their strict ways, have always loved her and wished nothing but for her happiness. Layla realized this only after many years...

Minor regret: Layla wished she could have spent more time with Haurchefant, telling him how much he meant to her...

Biggest accomplishment: Saving Etheirys!

Minor accomplishment: Mastering each battle job. Layla owns one job stone from each known battle job.

Past failures he/she would be embarrassed to have people know about: On a more light hearted note, Layla almost blew up the kitchen in the Rising Stones once after offering to cook a meal for the Scions. She has never cooked for them ever since...

Character’s darkest secret: The first time Layla has killed someone (it was a small Qiqirn – an order by the Wood Wailers in the Black Shroud in her early adventuring days...), her body moved very fast – too fast – as she quickly stabbed the Qiqirn to death. Her body did not hesitate but Layla was disturbed for many moons. Her heart and her strong body are at odds. Of course, as the Warrior of Light she has taken many a life but it never gets easier for her mind. Though her deft hands may suggest otherwise... And while this incident was not a secret per say, she has never talked to anyone about this.

Goals

Drives and motivations: Layla loves meeting people and helping out whenever she can. Their thanks are more than enough motivation to travel the world and spend meet new people.

Immediate goals: After saving the universe, Layla wants to spend more time with family and friends during peaceful times.

Long term goals: Traveling the word! There is still so much to discover and Layla is eager to see everything Etheirys has to offer.

How the character plans to accomplish these goals: Layla has a lot of connections by now and it will not take much time for someone to reach out.

How other characters will be affected: During the events of Endwalker 6.0, Layla was able to reunite with her parents and while she regularly goes back to Radz-at-han, Azem's legacy calls! And so, she has to be apart from her parents once again...

Past

Hometown: Radz-at-han, Thavnair!

Type of childhood: Layla grew up in a rich household with a lot of servants. Her father in particular spoiled her rotten and bought her everything she asked of him. Whether it's foreign goods from Aldenard or Othard or beautiful Hannish silk for her to wear. Layla was very priviledged compared to most children her age and she knew this very well. Thanks to this, she was quite arrogant even if her attitude was not foul, she thought of herself as the center of the world.

Pets: No pets.

First memory: Drinking lassi next to her mother who gently pet her hair and told her Ala Mhigan fairytales. Layla does not exactly know how old she was but she must have been very, very young.

Most important childhood memory: Running to Mehryde's Meyhane and watching the dancers perform. Their exquisite moves are forever etched into Layla's heart.

Why: These dancers looked so graceful and beautiful that Layla decided to become a dancer herself.

Childhood hero: Her mother, despite scolding her a lot, she was quite the coolest person to Layla.

Dream job: Joining Troupe Falsiam as a dancer and travel the world!

Education: Layla received advanced education in alchemy, history, literature and mathematics, though Layla rarely ever puts this knowledge to use.

Religion: Like every person in Thavnair, Layla believes in the Divinities.

Finances: Young Layla carelessly spent every coin that was given to her, so at the end of the day she did not much Gil to her name. Which did not mean much, considering her family...

Present

Current location: Back to her family in Radz-at-han for the time being (post-Endwalker)

Currently living with: Her parents in Kama, Radz-at-han.

Pets: A small tiger cub by the name of Tora-jiro given to Layla by a hunter. It took a long time for the cub to warm to Layla but she tried her best to befriend him and eventually her efforts paid off! Currently living with her family.

Religion: Still believes in the Divinities. But thanks to her adventures in Ala Mhigo and embracing Ala Mhigo as part of her identity, she has decided to walk the path of Rhalgr's as well, especially since she is a monk as well!

Occupation: Adventurer!

Finances: It is expected that Layla inherits her family's wealth and her alchemy institution. However right now, Layla posses not as much as gil and only goes out with enough coins to be able to small luxuries. The rest of her money is taken care of by her retainers.

Family

Mother: Her mother is an Ala Mhigan monk by the name of Lavena. She is said to be an extroverted, brazen and honest woman who didn't mince her words. Lavena fled Ala Mhigo a couple of years before Garlemald occupied Gyr Abania because she was escaping the wrath of Ala Mhigo's last king Theodoric as he hunted down the Monks of the Fist of Rhalgr. Fearing he would kill her soon, Lavena left Gyr Abania on a boat that was heading to Ilsabard. Eventually she would arrive in Thavnair and started working as a mercenary who took on all kinds of jobs that the Radiant Host would give her...

Relationship with her: Many people not how much Layla resembled Lavena but her relationship with her mother was somewhat difficult growing up as Lavena tried to teach her the teachings of Rhalgr, so that Layla could become a monk as well because she feared that there were no other monks besides her left. She would be proven wrong in the future but she put a lot on Layla's shoulders as she believed that Layla was the future of the Fist of Rhalgr despite the both of them living in Thavnair now.

As Layla got older she started to resent her mother and the Fist of Rhalgr and to certain extent Ala Mhigo as a whole but she was grossly ignorant and barely understood her mother's plight until she ran away from home and eventually became an adventurer. Seeing how the people of Ala Mhigo suffered in places like Ul'dah, Little Ala Mhigo and Quarrymil quickly made her regret her resentment. After joining the Pugilist's Guild and meeting Widargelt, Layla decided to become a monk like her mother after all...

Father: Her father Waoud is an alchemist and his family was one of the few alchemist families that knew of the real Satrap's identity. Layla was supposed to join her family in their service to Vrtra and when she was of age, they would have revealed Vrtra's identity. However, she ran away before she ever learned of him and so Layla only got to learn of the Satrap's true identity in Endwalker. Waoud, unlike his wife, was more a more soft-spoken individual. He was friendly to everyone he knew and people often said that Layla's got his calm and courteous personality from him, though many people also knew that Layla lacked her father's cunning ways.

Relationship with him: Waoud often spoiled Layla rotten and Layla adored him very much, though just like Lavena he did not hesitate to make Layla work though he did not scold her as much as Lavena much to everyone's dismay...

Favorites

Color: Layla adores bright and colorful colors such as reds, yellows, oranges and pinks.

Least favorite color: None in particular.

Music: Hannish folk music is very nostalgic to her but Layla listens to all kinds of music, regardless of genre.

Food: Layla loves hearty Hannish meals like Baba Ghanoush and Hamsa curry as well as sweets and pastries from around the world but shies away from heavy meat foods.

Literature: Layla dislikes to read but whenever she does read, it is usually a fairytale or a romance novel... But she mostly reads about the newest fashion trends in places such as Ul'dah, Radz-at-han and Ishgard...

Form of entertainment: She loves watching stage plays as well as dancers (without participating herself, despite rejoining Troupe Falsiam)!

Mode of transportation: As a child Layla loved riding with a rickshaw but nowadays she uses the Aetheryte system like most adventurers.

Most prized possession: Her mother's monk soulstone. Widargelt never gave Layla a monk job stone of her own.

Habits

Hobbies: Layla loves to go shopping and buy all kinds of new clothings. If she is not spending a lot of money on clothes, she loves eating out with friends especially but often she is seen in the Bismarck all by herself..

Plays a musical instrument?: Jehantel taught Layla how to play the harp. She is not the best harpist but she keeps practicing whenever she can.

Plays a sport?: Simple stretching excercises to keep her body fit and flexible at all times.

How he/she would spend a rainy day: Stay in her room and read a book if she is in the mood or she used to join all of the Scions in their merry conversations.

Spending habits: Used to be way worse before Tataru forcibly taught Layla how to proper budget her earnings...

Smokes: No.

Drinks: Moderately.

Other drugs: None.

Extremely skilled at: Fighting.

Extremely unskilled at: Cooking and sewing.

Nervous tics: Biting her fingers.

Usual body posture: Her back is straight, the shoulders pushed back and relaxed. Never seen slouching...

Mannerisms: Very polite and thoughtful with her words. People describe sometimes as quite stiff because of it.

Peculiarities: Because Layla is extremely vain, after each battle Layla puts on a long cloak to covered herself, so that noone sees her covered in bruises and blood. And when she returned to the Rising Stone, noone was allowed to enter her room until she has cleaned herself up. Only Tataru and Minfilia were allowed to see her in this state.

Optimist or pessimist?: Quite the optimist!

Introvert or extrovert?: Introverted

Daredevil or cautious?: Somewhere in between. In battle a risk taker, outside of that Layla is much more cautious with how she carries herself.

Disorderly and messy or methodical and neat?: Layla is quite messy but if she wants to she can be tidy, though in between all the battles she rarely has the motivation to keep her room neat...

Prefers working or relaxing?: Definitely relaxing!

Confident or unsure of herself?: When it comes to her battle powress, Layla is extremely confident in herself. In matters of human relationships, she is much more conscious of herself...

Animal lover?: Yes!

Self-perception

How she feels about herself: Layla greatly regrets her selfish attitude when she was a child and a teenager. In order to improve on herself, she tries to be as selfless as possible but most people around her tell her that she is overdoing it.

What does the character consider her best personality trait?: steadfast and positive!

What does the character consider her worst personality trait?: painfully gullible at timea.

What does the character consider her best physical characteristic?: Her butt.

What does the character consider her worst physical characteristic?: Her countless little scars on her body.

How does the character think others perceive her: Layla fears that people assume that she is a brute though she admits that there's a truth to that assumption...

What would the character most like to change about herself: Layla definitely wants to be better at reading people better. And she has gotten better! Having seen so many places, her perception of the world has greatly changed...

Relationships with others

Opinion of other people in general: Generally sees the best in people until proven otherwise.

Does the character hide her true opinions and emotions from others?: Mostly not unless she gets terribly embarassed.

Person character most hates: Layla does not hate easily. She tends to forgive most villains as long as they are showing some sort of change of attitude (like Emet-Selch when he told her to remember the Ancients) but if she had to choose one, it would be Thordan.

Best friend: Lyse!

Love interest: Canonically Haurchefant & Ardbert as of 6.5.

Person character goes to for advice: Lyse or Y'shtola.

Person character feels responsible for or takes care of: Nanamo after the Bloody Banquet. They have grown close and consider each others as very close friends. Whenever Layla visits Ul'dah, she makes sure to pay the Sultana a visit.

Person character feels shy or awkward around: In A Realm Reborn it was Urianger. His speech was hard for Layla to grasp, even though she understands the Eorzean Common Tongue. His bumbling personality made things harder for Layla to read him.

Person character openly admires: Alphinaud. He took on many responsibilities at an age where Layla would laze around. She greatly admires and adores him. Of course, she makes sure to tell him so...

Person character secretly admires: Y'shtola for her cool personality.

Most important person in character’s life before story starts: Her mother, Lavena.

After story starts: Still her mother.

Did you know I've been pretty much working on it only for the past... three weeks or so?

My final entry for the Neo Twiny Jam: Clarence Street 14. Completed in 3hs (and I had dinner in between). It's pretty ugly, and the story is not much brighter...

I wasn't thinking much when I wrote it. It came pretty much by itself while I was struggling to create a 500-only parser for the jam (next year!).

An Eggcelent Preparation ranked 6th at the Text-Adventure Literacy Jam. While it is in the bottom-half of the ranking, I received an overall of 3.510/5 (or 7/10 ~with 17 votes), which is crazy high for a ranked jam! Lots of really good entry indeed!! Very tough competition, with mainly experienced creators!

And for a first proper parser try, I'm pretty happy with myself. I received 2 glowing reviews as well! This is a proper win, right there!

I'm going to do a post-mortem to wrap up this project, sometimes this month....

NOTE: the game page of the English version might disappear, in preference to the French/OG one (which I need to update). I will notify it here as well, but just in case, here's a head's up!

A few hours left for latecomers to submit to the Neo Twiny Jam..

I guess I should admit that I have started playing neopets again recently. The thing that dragged me back is not the deflation attempts or anything like that, no, it was what was going on with the beauty contest. See people have been trying to cheat at the beauty contest by submitting ai images and I hate that shit so much. So beside reporting all I can find, and hanging around in the board for finding them, I've been making a petpage guide on spotting it. So yeah making the petpage had me up till 3 am and thats what got me hooked again oops

nope! re-uploading old stuff that fits the prompts is allowed (and encouraged) ... old art that didn't get the appreciation it needed always deserves a chance to be shared again, it's a fun throwback!

So Demon twins but Danny was never raised in the League. He was brok sickly so Ra’s chucked him in the Lazarus pit and he never came out.

He emerged on the other side of the world in a pool of ectoplasm and got adopted by the Fentons.

14, he died.

15, he had a clone, Danielle, and she went to travel the world, starting in Venice

He knows he was adopted, Vlad spilled the beans during a fight, and when he was 16, he decided to tell his parents he was Phantom. (for the first time in my prompts) It went well.

When he was 17 and about to graduate high school, he decided to do a DNA test and find out who his bio parents are.

Bruce Wayne and an Unknown

Sends a letter to Bruce and doesn’t really expect a response.

He gets one.

Bruce Wayne knocks on his door 5 days after he sent the letter and offers to let Danny stay in Gotham with him while he takes a gap year. Danny agrees.

He meets Damian (doesn’t really matter is Damian knew of Danny existence or not) and everyone else and has a great time.

Eventually, Danny brings up things that alludes to his vigilante past

“Ya know, back when I was dead-”

“Metaphorical, right?”

“… sure. Anyway!-”

“Killed 17 people?! Tsk tsk, my rouges would never! Not even the clown! So, do you want Thai or Indian takeout?”

“… what was that?”

“Thai or Indian?”

“What- no, that not what I- *sigh* Thai, please.”

Eventually, he brings up his Dani.

“Oh yeah, my clone loves to travel!”

“Your what?”

“My clone! She’s more like a sister though.”

“Okay… where is she??”

“Shes traveling. Last I heard she was running with a group called the League of Assassins. Or was it assailants?”

“👁️👄👁️”

“Do you want to meet her..?”

“YES.”

So Dani joined the LOA. Not the worst thing she could’ve done.

Talia took one look at this girl she found in Venice that looked exactly like her beloved and thought ‘why not?’ And offered her a place to stay.

Dani took one look at this women she met in Venice that offered her a place to stay and though ‘bet’ and accepted.

So she’s been running with assassins. It’s not that bad and she learned how to fight. Talia mothers her and protects her from Ra’s good mom Talia, she will not raise Danielle like she raised Damian Eventually Dani gets a message from Danny saying that his biological family wants to meet her.

She goes with Talia’s okay and heads to Gotham.

Unlike her template, she knows that the Waynes are the Bats and loves teasing them about it.

“You’re billionaires, right? Wow, I really hope you don’t have a secret lair under this mansion!”

“… right, right. That would be weird.”

Damian doesn’t know what to make of Danielle. On one hand, he’s always wanted a sister, and she’s biologically related to him. On the other hand, she willingly works with the people that took away Damian’s childhood.

Danielle doesn’t have the blind devotion to the LOA that he had, and he thinks that she’s been manipulated by Ra’s and spends his time trying to convince her to stay in Gotham with them.

So now Bruce Wayne and Talia Al Ghul get into a custody battle. (Talia wants also Danny and Bruce wants Dani)

Wind of it reaches the press and now the whole world is invested.
