I’m laughing so hard because like…what’s stopping anybody from buying a Pez dispenser…sticking the scroll where the candy’s supposed to go…supergluing some sort of a hook to it…and nailing that to your doorpost? 😂

20 Questions for Writers!
Thank you @sky-scribbles for tagging me, made me feel warm and fuzzy on a long and tough day :D I will tag @leadflowers and @ziskandra
How many works do you have on ao3?
Currently 76! I used to have about 200 on my old account but I nuked it to give myself a fresh start and a break from hate comments.
What’s your total ao3 word count?
248,265
What are your top five fics by kudos?
The Ending of Words: Elder Scrolls Online, Sotha Sil x Reader, 119 Kudos
Brain Damage: She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Entrapta x Hordak, 83 Kudos
A Luxury: Mass Effect, custom F!Shepard x Javik, 78 Kudos
Rare and Radiant: Dragon Age the Veilguard, custom F!Rook x Emmrich Volkarin, also 78 Kudos
Mister Monster: Skyrim, Gen, 76 Kudos
What fandoms do you write for?
Right now, Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader (where yet another old man has bewitched me body and soul), plus Dragon Age! All of my other fandoms, like Baldur's Gate 3, Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect or Cyberpunk 2077, are also very dear to my heart, so you never know when I might return to them!
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I do! :D I get very few comments, possibly because I tend to restrict commenting to registered users only (to avoid being flamed as we old hags say), but it gives me the time and space to respond to everyone!
What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
As He Lay Dying — which is actually one of the very first fics I ever wrote in English over 10 years ago, and then edited and reuploaded to celebrate Skyrim's anniversary! It depicts the last moments of Archmage Savos Aren, as he hallucinates his dead friends being alive again. Early 20s me was so edgy XD
Among the more "modern fics", there's also Red Lullaby, which is set in Dragon Age Inquisition's "dark future" alternative timeline and ends in one of the POV characters succumbing to red lyrium (she'll be fine tho, her sad dad will show up and undo another sad dad's mess).
I do have a penchant for writing fics where Character A thinks Character B is dead, but that's, likewise, just temporary angst!
What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Most of my fics tend to have happy or at least hopeful endings these days, because there's only so much heartbreak I can have in the real world. However, I would like to single out Geth Bearing Gifts, which is my fix-it for the Mass Effect ending! Shepard may be Going Through It (including memory loss), but she's alive, *and* so are EDI and the Geth and all her friends!
Do you get hate on fics?
Not recently, no; I get silly anons sometimes, but in the grand scheme of things they are more of my little jesters than the destroyers of self-esteem they used to be.
Do you write smut?
Yes! I do however have to frame it in a million words of preamble and character study :')
Do you write crossovers?
I used to have a sprawling Dragon Age/Skyrim crossover fic, but it now rests in Oblivion with my old account. As does my little "Liam Kosta gets his family car back via a weird flying blue box" Andromeda ficlet, it was kinda cute.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I don't think so! I do feel like the fandom applies the word "stolen" way too broadly sometimes, taking it to mean "having the same character concepts" or "taking inspiration from one another". I love inspiring people; if you start shipping the same rarepairs as me, my day, nay my entire life, will be made!
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Not that I recall! I did translate another person's fic from russian into English though!
Have you ever cowritten a fic before?
No, but I have had fic trades and roleplay sessions!
What’s your all time favourite ship?
As of right now, Emmrook from Dragon Age the Veilguard! It has all the story beats I previously had to merely headcanon for non-existent character relationships!
What’s the wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I switched to writing one-shots precisely to avoid this problem!
What are your writing strengths?
After over twenty years of study, I have made the English language my bitch. I juggle present and past tense forms like it's nobody's business. I drive my point home with poetic repetitions. I weave huge complex sentences and then pepper them with choppy, short ones in between. And I thrive on it!
What are your writing weaknesses?
I'd say that I have a very limited number of tropes and ship dynamics that I explore over and over again... But you know what? My only payment for this is serotonin. And these two or three specific staples — particularly old people finding second love, and bi4bi m/f couples where the dude is a total wifeguy — give me serotonin!
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic?
Uhhh, is this meant to be controversial? I don't have any thoughts, I am sure there are occasions that call for this!
First fandom you wrote for?
Regrettably, I think it was Harry Potter. I was maybe 16 at the time and all about Remus Lupin with a dash of Severus Snape; maturing and getting disillusioned in JKR aside, not much has changed about my tastes honestly.
Favourite fic you’ve ever written?
Probably Je Vous Promets, a ficlet establishing future bonding between my beloved Yvie Lavellan (aka Kader on her mama's side) and a still bitter and imprisoned magister Alexius. My pixel daughter is very precious, and the old man won't know what hit him!

Indian spice brand MDH faced rejections in the US Market before being suspended in Hong Kong, according to a recent report. Hong Kong suspended sales last month of three spice blends made by MDH and one by another Indian company, Everest, for apparently containing high levels of a cancer-causing pesticide. Ethylene oxide is unfit for human consumption and a cancer risk with long exposure. The companies have said their products are safe and MDH added it does not use ethylene oxide at any stage of storing, processing, or packing of spices. Authorities in the United States, Australia and India are looking into the matter. Both brands are popular in India and are exported around the world. India is the world's biggest spice producer and is also the largest consumer and exporter of spices. Zion Market Research estimates India's domestic Market was worth $10.44 billion in 2022, and the Spices Board said India exported products worth $4 billion during 2022-23. Before the latest scrutiny, products from MDH, a family-run Indian company more than 100 years old, were rejected for sale in the United States due to the presence of salmonella, a bacteria that can lead to gastrointestinal illness. Around 20%, or 13 of MDH's 65 shipments to the United States were rejected after it failed checks for salmonella between October 2023 - when the current fiscal year started - and May 3, according to the latest available data compiled by Reuters from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA did not state what quantity was contained in each shipment but the 13 shipments rejected included mixed spices and seasonings, as well as fenugreek, according to the data. In fiscal 2022-23, about 15 per cent of 119 MDH shipments were rejected mostly for salmonella contamination, while the rejections stood at 8.19% during 2021-22, the data showed. Everest has had fewer rejections in the United States with just one of 450 shipments in the ongoing 2023-24 year having been rejected so far for salmonella. Around 3.7 per cent of Everest's US shipments were halted in 2022-23 and there were no rejections in the 189 shipments to the US the year before, the data showed. In response to queries on the FDA data, an MDH spokesperson said its products are safe. Everest said it had an 'exceptional' rejection rate of its US shipments of less than 1% in fiscal 2023-2024, adding that their products are safe. The US FDA and the Spices Board did not respond to requests for comment. The Board has been inspecting MDH and Everest facilities for compliance with quality standards, but the results have not yet been made public. For
decades, MDH and Everest have been among the biggest spice makers in India, making products widely used in home kitchens and restaurants for flavouring curries and many dishes. In 2019, a few batches of MDH's spice mix were taken off the shelves in the US for salmonella contamination and in 2023, the FDA recalled a few of Everest's products over similar findings and issued a public health alert. You know, I don't think that was quite clear enough. Let me emphasize one crucial thing about all of that:
We're not allowed to point out that this was intentionally and openly an attack on Jews.
We know it's an attack on Jews.
We know everyone else knows it's an attack on Jews.
The only "Zionists" anyone hates are Jews. People talk about Israel as if everyone in it is Jewish. People treat diaspora Jews as Potentially Evil until Proven Anti-Zionist. People protesting "Zionist organizations" only target Jewish groups, never Christian or politically conservative ones.
The only time anyone acknowledges the other "Zionists" is when we confront them about it, and they goysplain that there are WAY more Christian Zionists out there 🙄 No shit. The whole point is that you're acting like there aren't.
No one will acknowledge that Hamas explicitly hates Jews.
That Hamas's founding covenant cites the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.
That Hamas explicitly wants to destroy Israel because it hates Jews.
That Hamas does not want a "free Palestine," it explicitly wants to take the entire land for itself as a dictatorship.
That Hamas controls all the media in Gaza, and actively produces television programs, school curricula, speeches, and other propaganda presenting Jews as evil people who specifically want to kill Palestinians.
That Hamas is part of the Muslim Brotherhood, which was started by two rich fascist Hitler fanboys, translated the Nazi Party newspaper into Arabic, created a Hitler Youth dupe called the Nazi Youth, and went on to get funding and training from the Nazi Party for the "Arab Revolt" in 1936-39 Palestine.
Instead, we're gaslit with bullshit about how this is "resistance" that the West Bank just isn't brave enough for.
Now, let's talk about October 7.
The Commission’s year-long investigation, chaired by Lord Roberts of Belgravia on behalf of the UK-Israel All Party Parliamentary Group, was supported by testimonies from victims’ families, academics, and military experts.
Using irrefutable evidence, including footage from GoPro cameras worn by Hamas terrorists and CCTV footage, the report meticulously documents the horrific events of that day.
The report is 318 pages long. You can download it here.
I've now read the Twitter thread. It's only 7 tweets long, even though they're the fancy paid-account-length kind. It REALLY only hits a tiny bit of the 318 pages.
Most of it is actually stuff I've read before. If you're familiar with the events of October 7, it will not surprise you.
I am going to put it behind a cut anyway. You know what? No, I'm not.
Because for the past year and a half, I have consistently seen bloody photos of less horrifying acts, shared by people who absolutely intend them as a kind of competition.
It is not a competition.
The people who say it's not, who say they can mourn both sides, should have to face what they've claimed to mourn.
And so, especially, should the people who have applauded all of the below as justified, laudable "resistance."
Just scroll past starting here if you're Jewish and can't or don't want to read it.
The rest of this post quotes Oren Barsky's tweets summarizing the report:

The Numbers Behind the October 7 Attack – According to The Roberts Report
📍 Infiltration & Assault
• Approx. 3,800 Hamas fighters from the elite Nukhba unit crossed into Israel
• Another 2,200 armed militants from other Palestinian factions joined the attack
• 119 breaches were made in the border fence
• 32 rural communities and 3 cities were attacked
• 15 IDF military bases came under assault
📍 Casualties & Victims
• 1,182 people were killed
• Over 4,000 injured
• 251 hostages taken – including 210 living and 41 bodies
• 863 civilians killed – nearly 73% of the total
• 319 security personnel killed – approx. 27%
• Among the dead: 316 women and children
• 49% of the living hostages were women and children
• Victims included citizens from 44 different countries
📍 Rocket Fire
• 3,873 rockets launched on October 7 alone
• 987 more rockets fired in the following days
These aren’t just numbers. They’re the outline of one of the deadliest terror attacks in modern history.
Lets move to some quotes and recordings cited in the report—raw, direct, and impossible to ignore.
👇

📞 Phone call from a Hamas terrorist to his father – using the phone of a murdered Israeli woman:
"Hello Baba, I am speaking with you from Mefalsim.
Open your WhatsApp, tell Wiam. Look at all the dead bodies. See how many I killed myself, Baba.
Your son killed Jews! Here, I’m inside Mefalsim, Baba. I am speaking to you from a Jewish lady’s phone. I killed her and I killed her husband. I killed ten myself, Baba. Ten!
Ten with my own hands. Baba, open your WhatsApp and see how many I killed. Open up, I’ll call on WhatsApp. Tell Wiam, come on.”
Here are a few more taken from the bodycam footage of Hamas terrorists and victim's phones:
📍The Murder of Adi Vital-Kaplon – Kibbutz Holit
During the infiltration of Kibbutz Holit, Hamas terrorists were filmed entering the home of Adi Vital-Kaplon. She tried to shield her 4-year-old son and her 3-month-old baby.
After murdering her, the terrorists filmed themselves placing shoes on the baby’s tiny feet and rocking the cradle where he lay. The video was later uploaded to Hamas propaganda channels.
📍 The Arava-Elkayam Family – Kibbutz Nahal Oz
At the home of the Arava-Elkayam family in Kibbutz Nahal Oz, terrorists from Hamas and Islamic Jihad broke in. Noam Elkayam, 46, was shot in the leg.
The attackers used his phone to livestream an interrogation of the entire family on Facebook. On camera were his partner, Dikla Arava (51), his daughters Dafna (15) and Ella (8), and his stepson Tomer (17). Later, the terrorists forced Tomer—at gunpoint—to knock on neighbors’ doors and lure them outside, all while continuing the live broadcast.
Tomer was later murdered, and his body was found outside the kibbutz.
📍 The Killing of Joshua Molle – Tanzanian Student, Nahal Oz
Joshua Molle, a 21-year-old student from Tanzania, was brutally attacked by militants from the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades and the National Resistance Brigades.
In the first video, he is seen with his hands raised, his face bloodied, surrounded by six attackers who beat him and scream at him.
A second video, filmed on a terrorist’s bodycam, shows Molle lying on the ground, bleeding from stab wounds to his abdomen. One terrorist stands over him holding a blood-stained knife. Another stomps on his chest.
📍 The Murder of Bracha Levinson – Kibbutz Nir Oz
At Kibbutz Nir Oz, militants broke into the home of 74-year-old Bracha Levinson. Her family, who had been in contact with her via text messages, learned of her death not through official channels—but through a Facebook post published from her own account.
The post was a video showing Levinson lying lifeless on her living room floor, in a pool of blood, surrounded by armed men shouting in the background. The footage had been uploaded by her killers.
The Roberts Report is filled with countless documented materials—taken directly from Hamas bodycams, audio recordings, and videos captured on the phones of their victims.
Many of these were later uploaded by Hamas operatives and other Palestinian users to social media platforms, especially Telegram.
Let’s move on to some of the most extreme and horrifying cases documented in the report—if such a distinction can even be made.
👇
Some of the Most Horrific Atrocities – as Documented in The Roberts Report
(If such a distinction is even possible)
📍 Burned Alive, Embracing One Another
Charred bodies were found tightly bound together—an Israeli mother and child tied with metal wire and burned alive. Medical evidence confirmed they were still breathing during the fire, as soot was found in their airways.
📍 Beheadings Captured on Camera
A video from Kibbutz Nahal Oz shows a Gazan civilian attempting to behead a wounded Thai worker with a hoe. The victim was still alive but too injured to move.
Additional beheadings—some post-mortem—were documented and shared on Telegram. Several bodies were found with facial disfigurements and eyes gouged from their sockets.
📍A Soldier’s Body, Shown with a Fake Head
In one case, a murdered soldier was decapitated. But his family was not initially told; his body was presented with a mannequin head to spare them further trauma.
Only weeks later did they learn the truth, and the grave was reopened so the head could be buried alongside the rest of the body.
📍 Torture Using Electrical Cords
Many bodies were found bound with household electrical wires, tightly looped around the wrists. In some cases, the cords tore through the skin, and limbs were either crushed or severed.
📍 A Baby Severely Burned – Kibbutz Kfar Aza
The Golan family hid in their safe room as terrorists tried to smoke them out with a burning tire. When that failed, the attackers ignited a gas canister inside the house.
The mother suffered second- and third-degree burns over 60% of her body. The father sustained burns to 45%. Their infant daughter was burned over 30% of her body and remained in a coma for 8 days.
📍Gang Rape and Brutal Murders
At the Nova music festival, one survivor recounted a chilling scene: a red-haired woman was gang raped repeatedly. Each time she moved, one of her attackers stabbed her in the back.
Another case described a woman who was raped and then had her breasts sliced off with a box cutter.
“One continues to rape her, and the other throws her breast to someone else, and they play with it, throw it, and it falls on the road.”
📍 The Youngest Victim: A 14-Hour-Old Baby
Born on October 6, 2023, in the NICU at Soroka Hospital, the baby returned home with her parents to Kibbutz Bar’am just hours before the attack.
She was shot and killed while being held in her mother’s arms.
📍 The Oldest Victim: A 92-Year-Old Holocaust Survivor
She was murdered in her home by Hamas terrorists. Her body was only identified days later due to its condition.
Let’s close with a few quotes from survivor testimonies—raw, firsthand accounts that need no commentary. Just their words.
👇

Survivor testimonies:
📍Tali Biner
A surgical nurse who survived the Nova Festival by hiding in a caravan for seven hours. She described hearing prolonged screams of women being raped, and later confirmed her fears upon seeing the bodies of naked women with signs of sexual assault. Biner emphasized the unmistakable horror in the victims’ screams and also testified to the rape of male victims.
📍 Gad Liebersohn
While hiding in the forest after fleeing the festival, Liebersohn recounted hearing English-speaking girls screaming “Help,” “No,” and “Please.” He heard them cry, followed by gunshots and silence. He could hear girls being taken to pickup trucks, raped, and shot.
📍Ron Freger
Hid in a dry riverbed for four and a half hours. He heard a girl nearby screaming “they are raping me, help me,” followed by a gunshot to the head. His testimony was provided to The Open University.
📍Rami Shmuel
CEO of UNITY Festival Israel and Nova organizer. He returned to the festival site and found naked female bodies, some butchered. He testified about the scale of sexual violence committed in open fields near the safe zone.
📍 Elad Avraham
Security supervisor at the Nova Festival. Fought off attackers using a fallen officer’s weapon. After helping people escape, he returned to the scene and led an 8-man team in a firefight against 30 terrorists for 90 minutes.
📍 Elizabeth Chinsome Anwuku
She and her friends hid in a thicket west of the festival. “We heard people screaming, we saw people falling, we were between booms and gunshots, and we were trapped.” Footage she filmed captured relentless gunfire drawing closer.
📍 Halely
A 21-year-old woman who hid under a stage. She described the group being frozen in fear while gunshots grew louder. “People screaming, begging… and then bang, silence.” She later ran while bullets whizzed over her head, seeking shelter behind a tank.
📍Noam Ben David
An artist who, with her boyfriend David Newman, hid in a trash container. She described hearing Arabic and gunfire around them and watching other survivors call loved ones, begging for rescue.
These are just a tiny fraction of the countless harrowing testimonies included in The Roberts Report.
Let’s now look at some of the broader statements included in the report regarding the behavior and patterns of the attackers.
👇
📍Bodies Used as Trophies
Victims from the kibbutzim and the Nova festival were used as propaganda trophies. Militants posed with the bodies, often stripped and humiliated—especially women—filming and sharing the footage to degrade and dehumanize them.
📍Destroying Communities
Attackers also looted homes, set fire to buildings, and used incendiary weapons, leaving entire communities in ruins. Fires burned for days, and many victims were left unidentifiable.
📍Sexualized Torture by Fire
Women and girls were especially targeted during the attacks, with reports of gang rapes, sexual mutilation, and assaults—even on corpses.
Many female bodies were found partially or fully naked, hands bound, and shot—often in the head. This was especially prevalent at the Nova Festival.
Forensic analysis showed indications that gasoline was used to set victims’ genitals on fire, which was corroborated by a video of a female victim who was set on fire with gasoline from the waist down.

Finishing with final thoughts on the report for now
👇
📍This Is Just a glimpse
What I’ve shared here is only a fraction of The Roberts Report - a document that’s impossible to fully absorb in a single thread.
It’s filled with overwhelming evidence: testimonies, footage, transcripts, and forensic findings.
All of it factual.
Nothing added. Nothing exaggerated.
This is a formal British report, 300+ pages authored by MPs and Lords from across the political spectrum.
It lays out - clearly and unflinchingly - what Hamas did: mass murder, rape, mutilation, and the burning of live infants. And they filmed themselves doing it.
Now it’s documented. In English. For the world to see.
As Lord Roberts, Chair of the Commission, writes:
“We added nothing that wasn’t proven. The horrors need no exaggeration.
Our aim is to establish a record - indisputable, now and for years to come - of the nearly 1,200 people murdered, often with a level of cruelty unseen since the Rape of Nanking.
Holocaust denial took decades. October 7 denial took hours.
The denial hasn’t only come from the Middle East. It has grown swiftly and boldly in the West.… As a non-Jew, I see it as a moral obligation to stop this new form of Holocaust denial - the denial of October 7. It’s the least we non-Jews owe the Jewish people."
So I want to thank the Commission - and Lord Roberts - for producing this historic and essential document.
And if you believe, like I do, that this must not be ignored - please share this thread.
Here’s the link to the full report for anyone who wants to read it in full:
bit.ly/41Sg3VI
This is the hardest thread I’ve ever written in my life.
Alright, ready for this?
Here’s a quick thread with highlights from The 7 October Parliamentary Commission Report—also known as The Roberts Report.
It’s the most comprehensive document published to date on the events of October 7, 2023, detailing thousands of incidents from that day.
The report was compiled by a commission led by Lord Andrew Roberts of Belgravia—a historian and member of the UK House of Lords.
Its members included Lords, Barons, and MPs from across the British political spectrum.
“We added nothing that wasn’t proven. The horror needs no exaggeration.”
- Lord Roberts, Chair of the Commission
In this thread, I’ll share key excerpts from the report, divided into a few categories:
🔹 The numbers behind the barbaric attack
🔹 Selected quotes from Hamas terrorists during the assault—taken from Hamas’s own materials: GoPro footage, audio recordings, live streams, and social media posts
🔹 Some of the most extreme atrocities committed that day
🔹 Powerful testimony from survivors
No drama. No exaggeration. Just the facts.
This is the hardest thread I’ve ever written in my life.

I was scrolling through the Beatles topic on Twitter the other day and came across a tweet from Mark Lewisohn referring to a talk he’d given to the Fab4cast podcast on the Get Back sessions and Spring period of 1969. I assumed that it was a recent talk so I gave it a listen but the talk is actually from 2019.
I tend to find Lewisohn’s podcast interviews to be very interesting. He’s obviously got decades worth of Beatle knowledge stored up so you’re almost guaranteed to learn something new or hear an anecdote that you’ve never heard before but more than the factoids he’s accumulated over the years I find his interpretations of the band extremely telling.
The part of the conversation that really caught my attention was when the podcast hosts brought up the fact that John and Paul’s weddings were really close together and wondered if the two events were connected in any way, I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that this probably got the biggest reaction out of Lewisohn, the main points of the exchange are outlined below (time stamp 47:12)
Host: “Well also in this period there are two events, the marriages of John and Paul, within 8 days of each other… I read that John wanted to marry on the 14th, two days after Paul’s wedding but couldn’t do it because of legal issues, how much was his [marriage] a response to Paul’s marriage do you think?”
Lewisohn: “I’ve read that people say that it was but never heard John say that it was so there’s no validity to those claims they’re just people assuming that John didn’t want to be outdone by Paul… that’s the kind of writing that annoys me because it becomes part of the fact and it’s some writer thinking that’s what it probably was… Unless someone out there can find a Lennon quote in which he actually says it in which case I stand corrected and I’ll be very happy to do so”
There’s a lot going on in these quotes so I’m gonna break down my thoughts on this further:
The illusion of John’s honesty
What Lewisohn displays here is something I believe is pretty common within the Beatles’ authorship. I believe in Revolution In The Head Ian McDonald referred to John as “truth” and Paul as “beauty” and I think a lot of writers do tend to assign those attributes consistently to John and Paul. Reading (or listening) to the Lennon Remembers interview now, it’s hard to believe at one stage people took what John was saying as fact and never even questioned whether there were emotions or agenda behind what he was saying, despite the contradictions (“Me and Paul stopped writing together in 1962” vs “Me and Paul worked really closely together on Sgt. Pepper”) and because John was so charismatic and would speak openly in interviews and to people he knew about both the good and bad in his life I think people, and in this case Lewisohn, assume that John told us everything of note that happened in his life, which I don’t think is a realistic expectation of anyone, let alone someone as famous as John. I think it’s problematic to take John’s or anyone else’s words, especially when they’re said in public, as the gospel truth because everyone has an agenda and John was no different. I also think it’s unrealistic to believe that John would ever announce that the reason he and Yoko got married when they did was in any way connected to Paul, that would have sullied the sanctity of “John and Yoko TM”, I mean, how can you be the greatest love story ever if the reason you decided to get married was because your musical partner who you may have unresolved romantic feelings for got married? I don’t think John would publicly embarrass Yoko like that or risk undermining the strength of the brand he was trying to create with his new relationship by admitting that Paul’s marriage spurred them on. That Lewisohn is apparently holding out for a lost interview of John stating that Paul was involved in the timing of his marriage to Yoko just sounds pretty far fetched to me.
The timing of John’s wedding in relation to his and Yoko’s divorces
As discussed in this podcast, Paul and Linda got married (pretty unexpectedly I believe) on 12 March 1969 and John and Yoko got married 8 days later (and apparently they wanted it to be sooner) on 20 March 1969. Aside from the extremely close proximity of John and Paul’s weddings it should be noted that John’s divorce from Cynthia was finalised in November 1968 and Yoko’s from Tony Cox was finalised in January 1969.
So why am I bringing up John and Yoko’s divorces? Because it meant that they were free to marry each other from January 1969, there was no longer a legal issue preventing them and if John’s bursting out in song about it, you would assume that they would have started planning their wedding ASAP… but curiously they didn’t. How do we know John and Yoko weren’t planning a wedding before Paul married Linda? Because once Paul was married John and Yoko started scrambling to get married ASAP, suddenly there was a rush and need to be married that hadn’t existed before, John suddenly wanted to marry Yoko on a ferry but they couldn’t be married there, then John wanted to marry Yoko in Paris but they needed to be resident in Paris for a period of time before they could get married there so eventually they settled on Gibraltar as they could get married there at short notice. Clearly there was a sudden need for John and Yoko to get married that didn’t materialise until around March 1969, am I and countless other people (including Paul himself) crazy for assuming that Paul’s wedding impacted John’s sudden desperate need to be married? If it wasn’t Paul’s wedding, what was it?
Authorial interpretation and assumptions
I’m really fascinated by the visceral reaction Lewisohn had to just the suggestion that the timing of John and Yoko’s wedding was connected to Paul and Linda’s. For Lewisohn to state it annoys him was pretty shocking to me because, given what is publicly known about this period and the lack of any other logical reason for John and Yoko’s wedding to be so close to Paul’s and Linda’s, I don’t think it’s bad writing to point out the proximity and suggest that the timing was more than a coincidence.
Based on his reaction, you would assume that Lewisohn would be set against any form of interpretation where the principal in question hadn’t confirmed that the interpretation was in fact correct but that would be an incorrect assumption to make. Some of you may be aware of the Hornsey Road shows Mark Lewisohn was giving in 2019 around the 50th anniversary of Abbey Road. During these shows Lewisohn played a clip from the, now infamous, 4-4-4-2 meeting tape and gave a presentation on the Abbey Road period in the Beatles’ history. One of the points Lewisohn raised during the show was that during the sessions, after the car accident in Scotland, a bed was brought into the studio for Yoko so she (and sometimes John) could rest while work on the album progressed. According to Lewisohn, one morning they turned up to the studio and someone had removed one of the legs from the bed, leaving it with 3 legs *dramatic pause* which was him heavily hinting that he thought Paul broke Yoko’s bed on purpose and then bragged about it on the Ram album by including a song called 3 legs, I’m not going to go into the validity (or lack thereof) of this claim but I find it very interesting that Lewisohn was annoyed about authors suggesting that the timing of John and Yoko’s wedding was connected to Paul and Linda’s but he seems happy to publicly speculate that Paul was sabotaging Yoko’s bed in the studio based on the title of a song that he would release on Ram two years later and nothing else.
Is there any evidence that connects John’s wedding to Paul’s?
I’ve already outlined the suspiciousness of John and Yoko choosing to get married right after Paul, when they had been free to marry for weeks prior but is there any other evidence that either proves that the weddings were connected or is Lewisohn right to deem that suggestion as lacking in validity?
Interestingly there actually is unverified eyewitness testimony that does connect John and Paul’s weddings (something not mentioned by Lewisohn in this podcast). I believe there’s an anecdote from Les Anthony (John’s chauffeur at the time) about him driving John and Yoko around when news of Paul’s wedding suddenly came across the radio, to which John apparently said to Yoko that “we have to get married now”… I couldn’t track down the exact source for that story (if anyone knows the source please let me know) so I’m not sure how credible that anecdote is but, assuming it is accurate, then that would suggest a correlation between John and Paul’s weddings that Lewisohn is adamant doesn’t exist.
Why does this matter?
I do think that this podcast interview could be indicative of a few future concerns I personally have around the way the Beatles discourse will progress in the future. Firstly, this was only a podcast interview so it’s unlikely that when Lewisohn releases the final book in his trilogy that he’ll discuss the weddings in this manner (I.e. although he’s adamant the timing of John’s wedding had nothing to with Paul he failed to offer any sort of explanation regarding why John and Yoko were rushing to get married when they’d had weeks to prepare a wedding).
It’s a slight worry that Lewisohn seems to believe that John announced every single thing that happened in his life of note, especially concerning Paul and Yoko. If John had told us everything of interest about him, surely his Dakota diaries would be the basis of a Netflix series by now and not locked away in a vault (assuming they haven’t already been destroyed). To me, like several authors before him, Lewisohn seems to be mistaking John’s emotional honesty with factual honesty. It didn’t escape my attention that several clips of the Lennon Remembers interview were inserted into this podcast and Lewisohn quotes extensively from it in Tune In as well. There’s nothing wrong with using Lennon Remembers as a source but if you do use it you should be analysing the veracity of what was said as we know that John was in a torched earth mentality at that time and even he himself has said what he said in that interview wasn’t meant as a timeless manifesto. It’s a shame that given his ability of analyse sources Lewisohn has never (to my knowledge) critically analysed Lennon Remembers, given that other sources have been analysed this makes LR a strange omission.
Finally, Lewisohn does tend to make some good insights and does have the ability to read between the lines (I.e. him noting Paul’s tendency to say “we” when in most cases he means himself) but with John I do think he has a bit of a blindspot. Why Lewisohn is happy to speculate without evidence in some cases (3 legs) but he draws the line at the suggestion that John and Paul’s weddings being connected is anyone’s guess. If Lewisohn can turn his attention to reading between the lines with John and the other Beatles too and connecting the dots then we should get a Beatles biography that finally addresses a lot of the issues we cover on this site. However, if we take the approach of only using John and Yoko’s PR to understand the events that transpired before and after the band broke up then the story hasn’t moved much further than 1970 and given all that we know now I think that would be a huge shame.

Let’s Talk About Trackers...
Because of the major talk about them yesterday and how an anon tried to throw me under the bus, I want to make an informative post about the specific tracker I use and certain others do too (assuming they still use these). This will also go under a keep reading so you don’t have to scroll in case you read it and then don’t wanna scroll past it a second time.
I personally use a site called statcounter. What is stat counter? Well, let me explain with an excerpt from Wikipedia!
“StatCounter is a web traffic analysis website started in 1999. Access to basic services is free and advanced services can cost between US$5 and US$119 a month. StatCounter is based in Dublin, Ireland. The statistics from StatCounter are used to compute web usage share for example. As of May 2019, StatCounter is used on 0.9% of all websites. StatCounter statistics are directly derived from hits—as opposed to unique visitors—from 3 million sites, which use StatCounter, resulting in total hits of more than 15 billion per month. No artificial weightings are used to correct for sampling bias, thus the numbers in the statistics can not be considered to be representative samples.”
Statcounter I find has some cool features too if you do run a business site, which I aim to do in the future, here’s some of the cool analytics stuff they have if you’re a business marketer:
This above is a capture taken for the tracker on my OC blog @ / barashikki-dialoversoc
This tool here provides where the majority of your people come from, so it will help businesses to have features such as this, so StatCounter is cool to use for business and marketing.
But that’s not why we’re here, are we?
StatCounter says they provide you with IPs in hopes of blocking/banning them from your site and/or stopping fraud on your website.
Sure, that’s useful as I personally use that to block people’s IPs if they send me hate anons. But here is how it’s an issue... This specific tab, which I know M/C uses quite often from my former friendship with her: Visitor Activity
Now, let’s go there and break it down. I will be censoring sensitive information like people’s locations and IP addresses to protect them.
I want to also address the “xxx is now using 100% of its log space” too.
It may be hard to read, but it says the following
“Your Project Bara Shikki is now using 100% of its log space. This means that your website traffic data for detailed stats older than 7 months* will be overwritten to make room for new data. You can upgrade for $9/month to increase your log to 10+ years*. If you don't mind losing this old data for detailed stats, then no action is required on your part. Summary Stats are included with all plans and are unlimited.
* Estimated based on your current traffic”
For my other blog @ / dialoving-lemons, it deletes this info in 7 days due to the high demand traffic (it is a LOT more popular than any of my other blogs despite me being on hiatus there).
So while that is good, this information stays for a while. If someone is paying for this service, they can keep this info for a long time.
Now onto the part we are mainly addressing, addresses and IPs. I will use my own visits for the example (the white censor). And yes, you can appear on your own tracker as it picks anyone up who visits the URL.
I color coded this so we can do a breakdown.
Yellow is my city. Green is the state (will be providence if you are in another country). Then you see “United States” as the country it says I’m from. Your country’s flag also appears before your location.
^^^This here is already pretty accurate and sensitive information, and we haven’t even gotten to the second line yet.
For the second line, we have these: Purple is your internet provider. White, that’s your IP. See that tag next to it? You can click on that and make notes in it for when that person returns to your url. You can even sign up for notifications to get emails or alerts on your phone (if you have the statcounter app). How do I know this? This is how:
Incognito doesn’t have dark mode, so sorry for bright image lol
Idk about you guys, but that’d make me uncomfortable to know someone could just get a ping saying I’m visiting their page. Again, I don’t know what features M/C uses, so I can’t say if she has this or not.
So not only can you find someone’s location, internet provider, and IP (which I think is enough for someone who hack or screw you over somehow, idk. I’d want to look that info up) but you can also stalk when they’re on your blog. This is a big YIKES.
Now back to the breakdown of the image from earlier...
You can learn what device they used, their browser, get a timestamp, and also how long they were on your page. I personally don’t care sharing this info, many of us use the most updated browser of our choice and most of us are on windows 10 for computer users.
So... yeah. While I use statcounter myself to block haters and redirect their IPs so they can’t get on my page anymore, I feel this site does give out too much information. On top of that, the one we all know who uses this software also has some software that checks who unfollows her. She uses these to get dirt on people and to expose them, it is not for her safety.
Now some tips on how to be safe if you don’t want to be tracked thanks to me testing things out:
Use the tumblr app.
The tumblr app uses coding for mobile usage. It does not rely on urls, but another form of code. StatCounter cannot log this code, so you will not appear on the visitor activity tab.
View blogs in side view
This is side view for those that don’t know. Side view acts a lot like the app in terms of the coding. So viewing like this is safe for you to not appear on trackers.
StatCounter relies on you typing in and clicking on urls on someone’s tumblr page (if installed on a tumblr).
As long as you are on a way that doesn’t rely on url systems, you are safe from appearing in someone’s tracker.
And a final note, if you are going to use one like I do, for blocking haters’ IPs, then I highly recommend putting a disclaimer in your description. I immediately did that when I installed mine so people knew they’d get rerouted if they started crap with me. I personally feel that keeping it secret that you have a tracker is violating someone’s consent as you are gathering info without their permission. By saying you have one, them being able to use ways where they won’t be tracked is very useful and helps them feel at ease knowing they can decide if they’re fine popping up on your tracker or not. Here is an example disclaimer you can put if you do put one in. Feel free to copy and paste too!
"Disclaimer: I use a tracker that allows me to see visitors’ IPs so I can block them if they cause problems for me, proceed at your own risk"

A Critical Review of the So-Called “Bible-Wheel” method of Biblical Interpretation
By Author Eli Kittim
——-
Like the Zohar in the Kabbalah, the “Bible-Wheel” approach is a kind of Hebraic “Gematria” or “Isopsephy” that corresponds to the letters of the Hebrew alphabet but does not take into consideration several important Biblical factors. For instance, it doesn’t consider the fact that the New Testament uses a different alphabet (i.e. Greek), nor does it seriously consider the historical-grammatical context of the New Testament books. The Bible Wheel’s premise is that “the Hebrew alphabet is established in the alphabetically structured passages of the Old Testament, most notably Psalm 119 that praises God's Word from Aleph to Tav, from beginning to end.” This “is a circular presentation of the Bible . . . by rolling up the traditional list of the sixty-six books like a scroll on a spindle wheel of twenty-two spokes.” Here’s how it works:
“The structure consists of a circular matrix of sixty-six Cells on a Wheel of twenty-two Spokes. The sixty-six Cells form three wheels within the Wheel called Cycles. Each Cycle spans a continuous sequence of twenty-two books as follows: With the completion of the Bible Wheel, we now have a fully unified view of the whole Bible as a symmetrical, mathematically structured two-dimensional object. The increase from the traditional one-dimensional list of books to the two-dimensional Bible Wheel immediately reveals a host of unanticipated correlations between the three books on each spoke with each other and the corresponding Hebrew Letter” (according to biblewheel.com).
This is more of an “intuitive” rather than a scholarly approach to the Bible that is devoid of historical, grammatical, hermeneutical, and contextual considerations. For example, the premise that the entire Biblical structure of the 66 canonical books is grounded exclusively in the Hebrew alphabet “from Aleph to Tav, from beginning to end” is debunked by Christ’s self-disclosure and promulgation of the Divine Name explicitly through the Greek alphabet:
ἐγὼ τὸ Ἄλφα καὶ τὸ Ὦ, ὁ πρῶτος καὶ ὁ ἔσχατος, ἡ ἀρχὴ καὶ τὸ τέλος (SBLGNT).
Translation:
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End” (Rev. 22.13 NRSV).
There is absolutely no correlation, here, to the Aleph and Tav or to the Hebrew alphabet. On the contrary, Christ reveals the divine name in the language of the Greeks by declaring “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” The alpha and omega are the first and last letters of the Greek writing system, that is to say, the beginning and the end of the Greek alphabet!
What is more, the Bible wheel practice is based not on scholarly criteria (i.e. detailed exegesis/authorial intent) but rather on apparent coincidences (e.g. mathematical, alphabetic, Hebraic, etc.), sometimes explained through a matrix that we might call “synchronicity”:
//Synchronicity is a concept, first introduced by analytical psychologist Carl Jung, which holds that events are "meaningful coincidences" if they occur with no causal relationship yet seem to be meaningfully related. During his career, Jung furnished several different definitions of the term, defining synchronicity as an "acausal connecting (togetherness) principle;" "meaningful coincidence;" "acausal parallelism;” and as a "meaningful coincidence of two or more events where something other than the probability of chance is involved.// (Wiki).
Therefore, although it may have some symbolic preliminary merits, the Bible wheel practice is obviously not a credible or scholarly approach to Biblical investigation.
The notion that the 66 Books of the Bible can be put on an apparent wheel where each book directly coincides with some other book based on certain numerical, alphabetical, and Hebraic correlations seems to be an outlandish explanation! This practice, including its pictorial representation, is somewhat reminiscent of the medieval divination practices of occultism, such as Kabbalah, Cartomancy (i.e. Tarot card reading) and Numerology:
“Numerology is any belief in the divine or mystical relationship between a number and one or more coinciding events. It is also the study of the numerical value of the letters in words, names, and ideas. It is often associated with the paranormal, alongside astrology and similar divinatory arts” (Wiki).
——-
The idea behind the Bible-Wheel approach is that Biblical history repeats itself: that time is cyclical. What is the axiom of this interpretive method? As It Was, So Shall It Be… It, therefore, presupposes that there are thematic parallels (and secret codes) between the earlier books of the Bible and the later ones. Similar methods have been proposed by authors Perry Stone and Jonathan Cahn. Thus, with the exception of some trivial and peripheral similarities, I don’t see any major thematic affinities, say, between Jeremiah 17 and Revelation 2, as per the Bible-wheel interpretation.
——-
Let’s Look at Rev. 2
——-
The Church of Ephesus has a lot going for it. It endures with patience, does not tolerate evil, exposes falsehood, and bears much for the sake of Christ (Rev. 2.2-3). No such praise is ever mentioned in Jer. 17 in relation to to the Jews. Furthermore, despite some set backs, God promises certain divine rewards in Rev. 2 that are not mentioned in Jer. 17, namely, offering the faithful the crown of life (Rev. 2.10) as well as eternal life: “Whoever conquers will not be harmed by the second death” (Rev. 2.11), etc.
——-
Similarly, the Church of Pergamum, despite its shortcomings, is holding fast. Even though it’s located within Satan’s domain, so to speak, it’s holding on to Christ and has not denied the faith (Rev. 2.13).
Here, as before, Christ offers the divine manna and a mystic precious stone to the over-comers (Rev. 2.17). Nothing of the kind is ever referenced in Jer. 17.
——-
Also, the Church in Thyatira is not doing too bad either. Christ is aware of its works—such as “love, faith, service, and patient endurance” (Rev. 2.19). And although some have incorporated certain false teachings, there are others within the church that are blameless and whom Christ does not rebuke at all (Rev. 2.24)! He simply urges them to hold on til he comes (Rev. 2.25). Christ maintains that anyone who endures to the end will be granted “authority over the nations” (v. 26) and will also receive “the morning star” (v.28).
——-
Now Let’s Look at Jer. 17
——-
By contrast, Jeremiah 17 is casting an aspersion on the kingdom of Judah. Its proemium is as follows:
“The sin of Judah is written with an iron pen; with a diamond point it is engraved on the tablet of their hearts, and on the horns of their altars” (Jer. 17.1 NRSV).
Next, there are a number of caveats that culminate in God’s vow to eternally disinherit the Jews from his promises:
“By your own act you shall lose the heritage that I gave you, and I will make you serve your enemies in a land that you do not know, for in my anger a fire is kindled that shall burn forever” (v. 4). Then God recites a summary of the Blessings and Curses of the covenant (vv. 5-9). Finally, Jeremiah exalts the Lord and offers up his own defense that he is upright, and so on. Here, the text instructs the people of Judah to keep certain commandments, such as “the sabbath day” (v. 24), something that does not occur in Rev. 2. The chapter ends with Blessings and Curses in the form of rewards and punishments (vv. 26-27).
Incidentally, the theme of God who “searches minds and hearts,” in Rev. 2.23, is a common trope that can be found in various places in the Bible and is not exclusive to Jeremiah 17.10 (e.g., 1 Ch. 28.9; 29.17; Ps. 7.9; Prov. 17.3; Ecc. 3.18; Jer. 11.20; Rom. 8.27), as proponents of this view suggest.
——-
Conclusion
Unlike Rev. 2, nowhere is there any mention of eternal life or of surviving a second death in Jer. 17. Moreover, no one is offered any rewards of authority over nations, or any glory, for that matter, such as that implied by the so-called “morning star.” In fact, there’s no one blameless in Jer. 17, nor does any praise come from God concerning anyone whatsoever. Even the prophet himself has to plead for mercy and proclaim his own self-righteousness. Besides, there are so many other differences.
Jeremiah is written in *Hebrew* and heavily redacted probably by the scribe Baruch and later generations of Deuteronomists, while Revelation is written exclusively in *Greek* most likely by a single author. The former is probably from the 6th century BCE, while the latter dates from ca. 95 CE. One is written to a Jewish nation, the kingdom of Judah, just prior to the Babylonian deportation, while the other is written to the predominantly Gentile Churches in Asia Minor. One is written in Palestine, the other in Greece! So where are the parallels?

What Is Aadhaar Card, And Its Importance In India
The Aadhaar card contains a 12-digit unique identification number distributed to every Indian resident depending on their biometric and demographic data. This data is collected by UIDAI which is established under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, under the provisions of the Aadhar Card act 2016. More than 99% of the Indian citizens are enrolled in this system. The World Bank Chief Economist, Paul Romer defined Aadhaar as the ‘most sophisticated ID program in the world’. But also keep in mind that, Aadhar card does not work as a proof of citizenship, neither it grant any rights to abode in India.
The UID number issued is linked to the individual’s basic demographic and biometric information like ten fingerprints, photograph, and two iris scans, which are stored in a centralized databank. The ID is issued to eliminate fake and duplicate entries and so that people can verify and authenticate themselves easily with a cost-effective online system, anywhere and any time in India.
An Aadhar card is issued after verifying and authorizing an individual’s details such as name, address, and other officially valid documents. The UID number starts with a random digit 0 or 1. The Aadhar card is granted in any government services like an LPG connection, ration card, kerosene, banks, etc. and benefits under pension schemes, NSAP (National Social Assistance Scheme), e-sign or digital locker. The UIDAI.gov.in website also allows you to verify your Aadhaar number through a user-friendly service called Aadhar Verification Service on its website.
Eligibility Criteria To Apply For Aadhar Card @Uidai
The Aadhar card is distributed to serve the official purposes of any Indian resident. A single Aadhar card can serve multiple purposes and work as an authentic proof of address and proof of identity. When you think about the eligibility criteria for applying for an Aadhaar card, you should know that the card is originated just to establish a person’s identity.
Therefore, The Eligibility Criteria For Applying An Aadhar Card Are:
You should be a citizen of India.
Children under 3 years do not require the Aadhar card.
NRI’s can also apply for an Aadhar card.
Foreigners who are residents of India can also apply for Aadhar card.
UIDAI has not set an age limit for the enrolment of Aadhar card just that, a child below 3 years does not need to provide any demographic details. In this case, linking to the child’s Aadhar number will be performed by their parents or guardians. When the child reaches 5 years, they need to provide their biometric information to update their records in the UIDAI database. If a child has registered their Aadhaar between 5 to 15 years, they will again require their biometric details to update their details in the record.
The re-registrations are required because as the child grows, their biometric differs along with their ages. And if they are not timely updated, then it might lead to false identity and the child might face difficulties during verifications in the future.
How To Apply For Aadhar Card At UIDAI.GOV.IN
An individual should be 18+ years old to get enrolled for an Aadhar card. You’d require all the necessary documents containing your demographic and biometric data before filling up the application. Multitouch xperia x10

Multitouch xperia x10 portable#
Multitouch xperia x10 series#
Mediscape is a media-focused application available on the handset which is similar to the Timescape functionality in the way it compiles user data across different web accounts - for example Facebook and Picasa are integrated into the image category. Media like video and images can be widely shared and explored through Timescape using avenues such Facebook, Goggles, Gmail, Messaging, Picasa and Twitter. The application timeline can be isolated by scrolling to the left or right, for instance a user would scroll across to the image icon to view just the photo timeline. The user can scroll up and down the timeline to view call history, SMS, google chat messages and Facebook updates for example.
Multitouch xperia x10 series#
The timeline is graphically represented as a series of titled tiles with each tile representing an activity, a phone call for example would represent one tile with the call details and contacts picture displayed on the tile. Timescape already takes into account messaging, phone calls and media captured with the phone and by logging into accounts such as Twitter, Facebook and Gmail, it will add their activity to the timeline. Timescape, one of the key feature applications of the Xperia X10, holds the home-screen centrepiece and ties in all commonly used communication and media applications to one control point. The home screen has a drag and drop application shortcut functionality, with 3 screen spans available by scrolling left or right. and I only had to recharge once every 2 days on average. An average day of using the Xperia consisted of phone calls, messaging, tweeting, constant Gmail access, Internet browsing and capturing photo and video. I took a lot of photos and video and didn’t experience storage problems. Internal memory is 1GB with an 8GB memory card and expandable memory is up to 16GB. Images and photos captured are easily shared and explored with options of Gmail, Picasa, messaging and Facebook etc. Switching from photo to video mode is easy and just takes one press of the video or image icon. Other features include geo-tagging and a self-timer. I liked the easy and fast pick up of the smile detector. Although it doesn’t have a flash it does have a photo light option which is as vivid as a led flash but a little bit cumbersome to enable and disable via a menu system. It has image stability, which came in handy at fast-paced events. I was impressed with the 8.1 megapixel camera and used it at a variety of media events (for example, see this CeBIT photo gallery). Auto-rotate was responsive and had a higher response rate on media than it on other applications like Gmail and messaging. The absence of multi-touch is not missed - the touch screen is highly responsive and reduces multi-touch to a moot point. The Xperia handled a high number of enemies and weaponry effects on the screen superbly. I tested a few games, but the game I spent the most time on was a tower defence game called Robo Wars.
Multitouch xperia x10 portable#
Viewing video captured by the phone or on YouTube is a relief to the eyes compared to viewing video on other handsets. The combination of the large display and the 1GHz Snapdragon CPU makes for a great portable gaming device. While the display is large, it is still easy to hold and type one-handed without it being unwieldy. The 4″ display is 480×854 pixels (Wide Video Graphics Array or SVGA) and is flushed to the handset casing with a thin transparent overlay. Holding the device, it is far lighter than what is expected with a device that sports a large display, weighing only 135 grams. The dimensions are 119圆3mm and the thickness is a slender 13mm. Shades available in the handset are ‘Sensuous Black’ (review phone shade) and ‘Luster White’. It is slim, sleek, sexy and the overall finish of the model we reviewed is a high gloss black. Sony Ericsson has pulled out no stops with the design of the Android-based handset.

October 2018 in Review

October was way more hectic than I thought it would be and I didn’t watch as many movies as I usually do. I spent a week in Korea (a post about my visit to the Korean Film Archive will be up soon!) And I was motivated to watch a lot of new movies (a.k.a. was on a long-haul flight).
You may have already heard the news, but the irreplaceable Filmstruck is shuttering this month after two wonderful years. Fair warning: I’ll probably spend a good deal of this month (November) trying to watch as many new-to-me movies in my queue as I can. I think I’ll try and write them up quickly over on my letterboxd, we’ll see!
Also, though The Vamps was intended to be an October series, the month’s general hecticness meant I didn’t get the final essay finished before the end of the month. So, in November, you all have that post to look forward to. (See if you can guess who it is! Hint: she’s a Dane.)
The reviews below are essentially transcriptions of the notes I took right after watching the films. They’re presented in the order in which I watched them.
Enough blathering, on to the movies. BELOW THE JUMP!
Dolls (1987)
29 May 1987 | 77 min. | Color

As a long-time devotee of the Band family’s productions, I’m always down for a Band film I haven’t seen. (When I was a kid, we probably spent a dozen times what it would have cost to buy Pet Shop (1994) renting it from Dollar Video.)
Yes, I did talk about haunted doll movies in my last roundup but this one was more fun, okay? The cast of characters are a great larger-than-life assortment of weirdos. I wish that 1980s English punks would just keep popping up in horror films after the 1980s. I particularly liked the performance of the little girl’s father. In most other movies, it would be a terrible performance, but in Dolls, it’s pitch perfect.
Dolls is a fairytale story that creates the atmosphere of a child’s viewpoint. The dolls are scary and do scary things, but, of course, they can be reasoned with.
As with many Full Moon movies, Dolls had a great balance of scares and campy humour. The doll designs are gross and fun–especially their wet, bloodshot eyes.
Dolls is a great choice for someone who watched a lot of Are You Afraid of the Dark? growing up and wants a “grown-up” version of that.
Funland (1987)
16 October 1987 | 98 min. | Color

After watching Dolls on Amazon Prime, this film was recommended. From the plot description and the featured image, we expected a fun slasher film. And, with William Windom (who I’m pretty sure took time off of Murder, She Wrote to make this movie!!!) in the cast, we couldn’t resist. What we got was… a… comedy? I guess?
There’s no doubting that there are some talented performers in this movie, but it’s just not funny. The only reason I’m writing about Funland at all is that it’s a good example of the kind of cheesy movie where you can see what could have been a good (or at least more interesting) movie underneath the movie that was actually made.
How exactly do you think: “I’m gonna make a movie about a killer clown fighting mobsters!” and then come up with this movie? I wrote a much longer complaint but, I won’t subject you to it. In short, Funland doesn’t execute its plot very well.
I definitely wouldn’t recommend this one. However, I am curious if any Atlanta natives have feelings about this movie? It seems like it features a lot of locals.
Flying Air Canada
The movie below are what I watched on my plane journeys to and from Seoul. I was flying Air Canada and I need to rant for a sec before moving on to my thoughts on the films.
There are a lot of reasons why captions (or subtitles, if you’re British) are necessary. They’re needed by lots of people, including people who aren’t d/Deaf or hard of hearing. If you want to learn more about why captions are good Jessica Kellgren-Fozard has you covered.
Personally, I have sensory processing disorder (SPD). This prompts me to have captions on when I watch most things. At home, I do this because not every movie or TV show I watch has decent sound mixing. It seems to be an art a lot of film/video makers are neglecting nowadays. Ho hum. I keep captions on so I don’t need to constantly change the volume. On a plane, my SPD is significantly worse because the noise of the plane is so loud that there’s little to no chance of me catching dialogue without raising the volume too high for my own comfort. Unlike the airlines I travel on within the US, Air Canada’s captioned offerings are practically nonexistent. That’s why so many of the movies I ended up watching were foreign-language (or ASL) films–they came with English subtitles.
Now, Air Canada, listen: Most of the movies you had on offer are definitely available with captions elsewhere. Even in theaters they likely had open-caption screenings. What is the deal? Seriously.
Anyway, sometimes I take for granted that we do some things right in America.
Okay, back to movies.
Mary Shelley (2017)
9 September 2018 | 120 min. | Color

This film didn’t have captions, which honestly might have weighed negatively on my experience of it. I was excited to see Mary Shelley. Mary and Percy Shelley are two of my absolute favorite literary historical figures and I love their work. This movie was a let down. It seemed like it was meant to be a character piece but the characters felt more like types than people. Also, don’t get me wrong here: I give no ground to fuckboys, but the depiction of Percy Shelley felt particularly oversimplified.
A Quiet Place (2017)
9 March 2018 | 90 min. | Color

Everybody raving about this movie was totally right. Definitely check it out if you haven’t already. Even if you’re not big on horror, it’s worth a shot.
How Long Will I Love U (2018)
18 May 2018 | 101 min. | Color

Scrolling through Air Canada’s film options, I got the feeling that time-travel romance is pretty popular right now in China and Korea? I think I picked the right one to watch in How Long Will I Love U. The premise put me in mind of The Lake House (2006), a movie I don’t like but can never resist watching when it’s on TV. This movie is a lot better than The Lake House. The premise is pretty cool and the plot is spurred on by a proper sci-fi concept. The leads are very cute together. I love that the main characters both kinda suck but become better people in getting to know one another. The special effects are good looking, conceptually fun, and not excessive.
I highly recommend this one. It’d probably be a great date movie or a Friday-night-with-some-Chunky-Monkey-and-a-cuddly-pet movie.
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable — Chapter 1 (2017)
4 August 2017 | 119 min. | Color

Listen. I have friends who are big fans of the JoJo manga and anime. I have never read any of the manga and couldn’t get past the first episode of the anime. That said, when I saw Takashi Miike directed this live-action adaptation of a story arc in the multi-generational JoJo series, I hit that play button right fast. Then, to my surprise, I enjoyed it! I often struggle with the visuals in live-action adaptations of anime and manga, but I loved how Diamond is Unbreakable played with the characters’ unique styling and design. The superhero-like story drew me in a lot faster than the anime and might just get me to look into some of the manga.
This movie might be a hard sell for a lot of people but if you wanna see something that’s out there and imaginative with supernatural overtones, Diamond is Unbreakable might be fun for you. Don’t worry–it’s easy to follow even if you don’t know who Joseph Joestar is. (Yes, that really is a character’s name.)
Un Traductor / A Translator (2018)
19 January 2018 | Color

I had no idea that following the Chernobyl disaster, some of the victims were sent to Cuba for medical treatment. I also had no idea that the program continued until 2011?! So, Un Traductor was a modern history lesson for me! Un Traductor is a model film for propaganda filmmaking–and I mean that in a fully complimentary way. The film does an admirable job of communicating how life for Cubans changed with the fall of the Soviet Union and how they adjusted to persevere.
You can probably gather from what you just read that this isn’t a fun watch, but it’s worthwhile if you have any interest in modern Cuban history.
A Casa Tutti Bene / There is No Place Like Home (2018)
14 February 2018 | 105 min. | Color

I don’t have a lot to say about this one frankly. It’s a decent family dramedy. Massimo Ghini and Sabrina Impacciatore both turn in good performances. *shrugs in Italian*
That’s all for this month’s roundup! Are you all ready for Noirvember? How about Kicksgiving? If you’re a Filmstruck subscriber, what are you marathoning this month?

Amazon Prime Video review: High-end TV shows for a service that might be basically free
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/amazon-prime-video-review-high-end-tv-shows-for-a-service-that-might-be-basically-free/
Amazon Prime Video review: High-end TV shows for a service that might be basically free

Amazon Prime Video tends to come in third in discussions about streaming, behind Netflix and Hulu — maybe even fourth, with the massive growth of Disney Plus. But the tech and retail giant’s streaming arm is muscular in its own right with lots of high-quality original shows and movies, an impressive back catalog of older favorites (and B-movies you haven’t heard of) and NFL on Thursday nights. If you already subscribe to Amazon Prime for the free shipping, the Video offering is a really great included perk. And if you don’t, it may still be worth paying $9 a month for, especially if you’re interested in any of its Amazon Original shows or its large movie selection.
Like
Included with Amazon Prime subscription
Wide variety of movies and shows, including many critically acclaimed originals
Large collection of 4K UHD shows and movies
Offline downloads and user profiles
Ad-free content
Don’t Like
Can’t watch shows as they air on other networks
Paid content mixed in with free content
Menus can be confusing
On the other hand, Prime Video is more of a companion service to Netflix and Hulu, and weaker overall than both. It can’t replace Netflix’s massive catalog of originals and hit shows, and can’t compete with Hulu’s vast collection of TV both old and newly aired. If you don’t already have a Prime subscription we’d definitely recommend choosing one of those two first — but chances are you already get the video part for free.

Prime 101
Amazon Prime Video — sometimes just called Prime Video — is Amazon’s TV and movie streaming service. Before the Prime Video we know today, Amazon launched Amazon Unbox, an online movie rental and download service, back in 2006 — just before Netflix introduced online streaming.
In 2011, as a way to boost the Prime subscription service, Amazon created Amazon Instant Video, with access to 5,000 streamed movies and TV shows for Prime subscribers. Unbox officially shuttered in 2015, and Amazon began marketing its streaming service as Amazon Prime Video. It became available as a standalone service outside of Amazon Prime in 2016.
If you are one of the 150 million-plus people worldwide who subscribes to Amazon Prime for the free two-day shipping ($13 per month or $119 per year), Prime Video is included with the service. If you don’t have an Amazon Prime account, you can still subscribe to Prime Video for $9 a month, the same price as Netflix’s Basic Plan, and a few bucks more than the Hulu Plus Ads plan. Prime Video subscribers can add on subscriptions to HBO, Showtime, Starz, Paramount Plus and several other channels for an extra monthly cost as well.

Critically acclaimed TV, and loads of movies that are… less so
Prime Video lists more than 200 Amazon Original Series on the site — larger than Hulu’s 100 or so originals, and smaller than Netflix’s collection of several hundred. Amazon’s Original series stand out for the amount of critical acclaim they’ve received: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Boys, Fleabag, A Very English Scandal, Good Omens, The Man In The High Castle, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, Transparent and Mozart in the Jungle all were nominated for or won Emmy awards in the past few years. These shows are typically made available on the platform a full season at a time.
And later this year Amazon’s Lord of the Rings prequel series will debut on Prime Video as well. Amazon reportedly paid nearly $250 million for the rights, which would make it the most expensive TV series ever.
Original movies include Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, The Big Sick, Manchester By the Sea, Late Night and The Report. You’ll also find exclusive original comedy specials, kids’ shows, documentaries and reality shows.
Another area where Prime Video stands out is its selection of kids’ shows. You’ll find favorites like Sesame Street, Spongebob Squarepants, Shaun the Sheep, Thomas and Friends and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, along with originals like Clifford the Big Red Dog and Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny.
Prime Video also includes an extensive catalog of B-movies that are pretty terrible and super fun to watch — just not necessarily with the kids.
While Prime Video is great for binge-watching original shows and older favorites, one downside is that there’s no option to keep up with current shows like you can on Hulu, unless you subscribe to one of the channels for an extra cost.

Not everything in Prime is Prime
Unlike Hulu and Netflix, Amazon sells TV shows and movies separately from its Prime subscription content, for rental and/or purchase, including new releases like The Croods: A New Age and Freaky. As the pandemic forced movie theaters to shut down, in March 2020, Amazon also launched Prime Video Cinema — a hub full of movies that would have otherwise been shown in theaters, like Trolls World Tour and Minari.
These pay-to-rent (or buy) titles can show up on some Prime menus too, mixed in with stuff you can stream “free” as part of your subscription. The mingling of content is confusing and can even seem like another incentive to buy something. But Amazon has since changed the Prime Video layout to make it clearer what’s included in Prime (which typically has a blue Prime tag) and what’s paid for (which has a gold dollar sign tag). But this appears differently across different devices.

Otherwise Prime Video’s interface is pretty similar to those of Netflix and other streaming services. At the top, you’ll see tabs for Search, Home, Originals, Movies, TV, Kids, Purchases & Rentals, Watchlist and Settings. As you scroll, you’ll see personalized categories like Movies based on your viewing, Popular movies and TV shows we think you’ll like, followed by more typical ones like Trending TV and Top-rated movies.
Prime Video’s nested menus operate similarly to those on Netflix. Click a title and you’ll see a description, an IMDb score and the ability to Watch Now if it’s included with Prime, as well as check out other rental or purchase options. If the title you choose is not included with Prime, this page will show you how much it would cost to rent or buy on the platform.
You can watch Amazon Prime Video on your Amazon Fire TV ($34 at Amazon), Fire TV Stick, or Fire Tablet, as well as on Apple TV ($180 at Best Buy), Roku, Xfinity X1, smart TVs, Blu-ray players, game consoles, iOS devices or Google Chromecast ($15 at eBay).
Prime Video’s best features
One cool feature that differentiates Prime Video from other streaming services is called X-Ray. Thanks to Amazon’s ownership of IMDb, you can scroll up while playing a given show or movie and see information on cast members, the music playing and trivia — helping you avoid “wait, don’t I know that guy from somewhere?” syndrome.
Another perk: Prime Video is generally ad-free. You may see a short promo for an Amazon Original before a show. But Prime Video doesn’t run regular advertising, so you won’t see ads for things like soda or trucks during any commercial breaks in your programming. The exception is the IMDb TV category, where you’ll find some popular network shows like Lost and Friday Night Lights free with ads.
To aid your binge planning, Prime Video does tell you what new shows are coming up for the month, which Hulu does as well but Netflix does not.
Most Amazon Original movies and shows along with several others are available to stream in 4K Ultra High Definition with HDR. This is great news, since in our experience, HDR actually delivers a more noticeable picture quality improvement, especially on a good TV, than 4K resolution. You’ll need a 4K UHD display and a streaming device that supports the format, including 4K-compatible smart TVs and streaming players like the Amazon Fire TV or Fire TV Stick, the Apple TV 4K and the Roku Streaming Stick Plus, among others.
Up until recently, Prime hasn’t allowed you to create separate user profiles, like Netflix, Hulu and Disney Plus do. But that feature has now rolled out on most devices, with users being able to add up to six different profiles, including kids profiles, on one account.
You can download Prime Video titles to watch offline if you have a Fire tablet, or the Prime Video app for iOS or Android.

Sarah Tew/CNET
Is paying for Prime Video worth it if you don’t have Amazon Prime?
Depends on what you’re looking for in a streaming service. If you’re a big fan of movies (good, bad and everything in between), a Prime Video subscription might be worth it for the extensive film catalog — especially if you can use it to replace pricey digital rentals. The growing collection of quality Amazon Originals is also a big draw — especially since there are no ads in any shows. And the large number of 4K HDR offerings is a plus for those with 4K TVs.
But if you’re more of a TV show binge-watcher and the Amazon Originals don’t spark your interest, you may be just fine with your Netflix or Hulu subscription. Either way, you can try out Prime Video free for 30 days — just make sure you cancel before it auto-renews.
