hi!👋 hello! kedreeva! i’m going to need to ask you to explain this!!!!

So back in 2009, a lab student named Annie Le was murdered at Yale university. Cameras saw her going on into a building, but not out again and it was like, the eve of her wedding (or close to? I don't remember) so clearly she had places to be and people waiting for her so they immediately started looking and the next day (or so? Anyway on the day of her wedding) they found her body in a recess in a wall, down in the areas where the research animals were kept. It turns out, a tech had killed her, but since there were cameras like EVERYWHERE, he just, I guess, left her there. Well, hid the body where it was. I don't remember how they caught him, but they did. It was a horrifying story. It still is.

And it was a huge news story among the folks at my workplace because, at the time, I was working at a different university, as an animal husbandry technician. As you can imagine this was a kind of intense time to be in that situation. They started offering, like, I'm not gonna say counseling but it was "if you need to talk we would prefer you talk to us about something wrong rather than kill anyone about it" and as techs (even if we were not even the same kind of tech, the killer was a lab tech and we were husbandry techs but I think a lot of people assumed it had been a husbandry tech since she was in an animal area), we were kind of getting the side eye from lab people for weeks afterwards. Like they thought we were gonna go "wow that's a fantastic idea, you're next!" or something, idk. And I mean like, people would freeze when you were alone in a hallway, or turn and walk the other way, or duck into the nearest room and watch you walk past, and they were all being super nice/civil to us when they did have to interact. It was very atypical behavior for lab people. Like not all of them, some of them had always been nice and weren't worried, but some of the people who had been unbelievable dicks previously were walking on eggshells. And the people who had friends in other universities reported this was happening at their jobs, too.

And instead of talking to The Man (because all the higher ups were garbage at the time), we just. talked among ourselves. It was a lot of "I may say I feel like strangling lab people sometimes when they do things that drive me up a wall but I don't MEAN it you know that right" and it also led to group discussions of what would be a theoretical *better* solution to hiding a body than what happened, with clear disdain for doing things like hiding bodies in walls, which is a terrible idea and one we would never do (looking at the people who think we might have decided this was a great idea actually).

Which consequently led to a lot of supervisors and/or managers that happened to overhear us bringing us donuts or arranging pizza for lunch in like, some kind of bid to help us feel appreciated, I guess, so that we wouldn't murder anyone, even though none of us were going to do that anyway. But also none of us were in a position to turn down free donuts or pizza or whatever.

And then after a few weeks, maybe a month or so, people just kind of forgot and moved on and things went back to normal like fifty people hadn't spent every lunch hour for weeks talking quietly among themselves about how human bodies would definitely fit into a carcass disposal barrel or that you'd have to crush hip bones and/or skulls before incineration. Hypothetically.

Like I said, it was a VERY weird time to be at my job, and every time I remember it happening feels like a fever dream. I can't even imagine what it was like at Yale.

let me tell you a secret. if the position you are applying for isn't "researcher" and is just "guy willing to talk to those kids paying to be in our building" then most university establishments actually have lower hiring standards than the average elementary school

because he doesn't mean they are exactly the same height, he just means they're more or less equally tall relatively to most other people they meet. ngl i'm very annoying about this discourse because people act like phil is SO MUCH shorter than dan, and he just isn't 😭 they say they're 6'2 and 6'3 but i'd say in reality they're probably closer to 6'2 and 6'4? phil does have horrendous posture though, and dan often wears pretty tall shoes. people love to say dan used to be shorter than phil/they used to be more of the same height, but in reality phil's posture has just gotten worse i think. back when people deluded themselves into thinking dan was shorter than phil it was all AWW THE HEIGHT DIFFERENCE but now the opinion has drastically reversed and phil is suddenly Much Shorter than dan and it's still AWWW THE HEIGHT DIFFERENCE, but seeing them irl is like.. the difference just isn't nearly as much as some people seem to think i'm sorry. last time this debate was going around i saw someone say phil's 6'1 and dan is 6'5 and i'm like can we please be SO fucking serious

My Wonder Woman Starter Recs (specific style 😎)

First stops: for an initial introduction to Wonder Woman, I'd generally recommend going to at least one of three places first. These three are:

Wonder Woman: Historia: The Amazons by Kelly Sue DeConnick

Wonder Woman: Year One by Greg Rucka

Wonder Woman: the Hiketeia by Greg Rucka

Of these I generally recommend reading Historia first, as it's a retelling of the origin of the Amazons as a race and how Diana came to be (so it essentially starts from the beginning) and is also the most recent of the them (if that means anything). Something to note about Historia though is that it's a DC Black Label book, so it's events aren't strictly canon in the main DCU and there are some changes and new elements present. I don't think this is something that should discourage anyone from reading it though, it's the best WW origin story out there, and even in strict main canon over the years her origin is one that has had many fluctuations and small (& sometimes big) changes. WW:Historia is three prestige format (longer) issues.

You'll notice the third book there is WW: The Hiketeia. Hiketeia is a great book if you're looking for a view into Diana as a professional and experienced hero. It's a graphic novel so standalone and not too long, and has a great Diana and really interesting plot (Diana vows to protect a young woman and finds herself pressed against the wheels of Greek Tragedy). This is also the first work with Diana done by Greg Rucka, one of her most prolific and loved writers. A sampling of this work (and also Historia) I think gives a good guide to where to go next in terms of runs on her main title.

Wonder Woman: Year One is the second book on the list up there, but I'm mentioning it last here as it's a bit more complicated in terms of format. Unlike other year one books, WW: Year One is actually a series of issues on her main title, showcasing Diana's arrival to man's world in Rebirth (and also current p sure) continuity. The issue numbering for this one is strange (only the even issues 2-14 on WW (2016)) so I recommend looking for this in trade form if possible.

These 3 books I think give a taste of some of the best standalone stuff in the Wonder Woman mythos, and give the reader a good idea of where they may want to go next in terms of longer runs on the title. So I'll break that down here as a Step 2.

STEP 2: WHERE NEXT?

Here I break down some highly recommended runs based on what they have in common with the standalone books from step 1. As a rule, these runs are going to be much longer than the above and generally more connected to the wider DCU and other books. Look for the italics to see the introduction to each new work. Explanation paragraphs follow after each italic/bold rec.

Curious about Greek mythology in WW and the Amazons' origins after reading Historia? Liked the prescence of a supporting cast and Diana learning about Man's World from Year One? Willing to read a longer run? I recommend: Wonder Woman by George Pérez

George Pérez's time on Wonder Woman totally reinvented the character after Crisis on Infinite Earths, and is fundamental in establishing many core concepts of her lore. At 62 issues, 2 annuals, and a 4-issue crossover event at the end (War of the Gods), it's definitely a commitment to read, but it's the most enduring and well-loved run on Wonder Woman for a reason--it's just that damn good. Lots of focus on mythology (although with a lighter tone than Historia) alongside Diana learning her role in relation to Man's World & establishing herself as a hero and ambassador. Pérez's run also has almost-certainly the most expansive and developed supporting cast in WW comics, something that really drives the emotional core of the series, especially in later issues. Obligatory note that this series was written between 1987 and 1992 and contains some very occasional aspects that I thought were in some way dated/uncomfortable etc. while reading (details of Cheetah's origin, depiction of the Bana-Mighdall, Hercules) but despite that I still highly, highly recommend this run. The word fundamental cannot begin to describe it.

Liked the experienced Diana of the Hiketeia? Interested to see her attempt to balance the high stakes responsibilities of an ambassador and superhero? Looking for some really badass moments and fights? Haven't read enough terrible tragedy? I suggest: Wonder Woman by Greg Rucka 2003 EDITION.

Some of Diana's coolest moments of all time are collected here. Also one of her most controversial. The 1st Rucka run is very much the story for anyone who liked the Diana of the Hiketeia and the tragedy of that and Historia. 2003 Rucka Diana is a Diana tested, forced to make decisions that are anything but easy, and live with the consequences. She's extraordinarily capable, but her enemies know that and are prepared to that end. This run, along with the Pérez run, rank among my favorite Wondy comics of all time (those and Historia are my top 3). This run is such peak Diana, especially in terms of sheer badassery. Her final confrontation with Medusa is in my opinion perhaps the greatest Wonder Woman fight scene of all time. Her encounter with Athena in the second-to-last issue breaks me every time. Cannot recommend this book more.

*a note abt this run is that it is more context-dependent than the other ones listed here, as it's the run that finishes out the Wonder Woman vol. 2 book and so has some guest appearances from characters introduced in other prior runs (Artemis of Bana-Mighdall, Cassie Sandsmark, and Vanessa Kapatelis, to name a few). I read this run before knowing much (if anything) about any of them, and still enjoyed it a lot, so I wouldn't be worried about this really but just thought I'd mention it.

Rucka's 2003 run is published from Wonder Woman (1987) #195-226. You can also find it in trade and I believe(?) omnibus. Sometimes the Hiketeia is included in collections of this series, as the 03 run is thematically similar in many places, just with a much deeper look at Diana and the world & with higher stakes.

...yes I'm putting ANOTHER Rucka book on here. He writes a great Diana, what can I say. This run is the same one that Year One came out of, just the follow ups to that story and versions of the characters. I have this run listed as separate from Year One though, as there's some really big time skips since the events of that first volume. A lot of time has passed since then, and there's more history between the characters, not all of it without drama. This run continues to be weird with the numbering, as well as some artist changes, so I definitely recommend looking into reading this in trade format (physical or digital) if at all possible. My recommended reading order is WW 2016 by Rucka vol. 2 "The Lies" (Wonder Woman: Rebirth Special #1, followed by 2016 main title odd numbered issues 1-11), then Rucka 16 vol. 3 "The Truth" (odds 13-23) then Godwatch (evens 16 through 24) followed by 25? But The Truth and Godwatch combine near the end so that doesn't really work either. This run is so good but recommending it is such a pain because the numbering is so all over the place. On God I never know which order to read this in. Going to revoke my previous statement and say read it as Rebirth Special 1, then only odds 1 through 11, then from 13 through 25 normally. That may lead to some weirdness as you read because the two stories take place at different times and have different art styles, but they come together at the end pretty dramatically so I think it's less confusing to read it this way? Maybe? So strange bc this is one of the go to good starter runs and yet it's set up so unintuitively. If someone has a better way to read this then let me know and ill edit, ik this explanation is super confusing bc neither way to read it is totally ideal imo and I feel I definitely read it in a weird order.

Oh god, those are gonna sound so unhinged, I swear I'm normal, don't put me on the pire. I may not have the best grasp on Dazai's character (as I'm heaaavily biased with very conflicting emotions) so this mayyyy be a bit subjective, but gonna try my best to be logical!

1. Make Atsushi cry for the death of his “father.” I know this scene has been heavily discussed and criticized but it's so so obvious he meant it metaphorically here. Dazai cares for Atsushi, that's a no brainer - both as a mentor and sooomething of a friend let's say. He wanted Atsushi to get some closure since faith didn't have it easy on him - to come so close as to witness the “redemption” of his abuser, literal seconds before his untimely end. If the Headmaster's death was justified and if it absolved him of his sin is a matter of philosophy and doesn't matter much here. What's important is the effect his death had on Atsushi. The lack of answers. The conflicting emotions. The unfairness of being left on the brink of what may have been a total change of perspective and major shift in his worldview, only for it it be taken away from him in an instant, before he could even process it.

Also I really like this scene in the meta sense. Because we've been teased with the character of the Headmaster since the very beginning and it's somewhat of a cruel joke to kill him off the moment we realize they may actually be something good in him. I like it so so much. It's heartbreaking but it's life. It's realistic. It wasn't sugar-coated in any way. Call it fate, call it coincidence - it happened, and now Atsushi needs to deal being left with all those ‘what if-s’ [i can start analysing the watch scene in Beast too but I'll make myself cry no joke]

And so Dazai was the only one who could give Atsushi what he needed in this moment. He needed to cry. He needed to mourn, to feel, to let out every single emotion that's been crawling at the edges of his heart since the very beginning. Of course the Headmaster was not a good ‘father,’ hell, he was no father at all. But that doesn't mean Atsushi can or should cope with his death with zero emotion or even god forbid celebrate it. I cannot imagine Atsushi being truly happy for the death of any person he knew, be it the most cruel abusive bastard or his most feared enemy. It's a matter of emotional connection - which is something that once it's been established, it's no longer in your control or your power to cut it completely without leaving a trace. So, Atsushi needed to cry. And even if Dazai orchestrated the whole reveal and its outcome - it was still in Atsushi's best interest, because this was going to happen one way or another, so might as well get over the pain and tears and trauma once and for all, you know (... but it was,  in fact,,, not once and for all… until what we barely just witnessed in chapter 123)

2. Cradle Oda in his arms as he was dying. I kinda wanted to make a joke out of this because it was the second thing that popped into my head, but I soon realized that I'm completely serious with myself. This is also my all time favourite Dazai scene (did i mention im also a passionate odazai enjoyer okay shhhh). This is, unsurprisingly, the major turning point for his character. It's his spiritual ascent, if you will. We see him at his most vulnerable here, he's a broken kid who just lost the dearest person to him and that made him realize he's willing to change his whole life to respect the dying wishes of his friend. It’s a very beautiful touching moment and I believe Dazai’s first ever act of “virtue.”

3. Be a good partner to Kunikida (when he’s not annoying him to death). I enjoy their dynamic a lot and I appreciate Dazai for holding off on the goofy and moronic-y when things get serious. 

4. Learn from his (to put it mildly) mistakes with Akutagawa and actually be a pretty decent mentor to Atsushi. Yea I don’t think I even need to explain this one, that’s just bright as day.

It's taking me ages to write this chapter because every time I look through old VODs / notes to check something, I come across moments like this that make me want to lie down face-first on the floor:
