Kikia certainly wanted children for the right reasons. And she was willing to accept that perhaps His Majesty would not dote on her always, even if she had one. But at her question, she gently shook her head.
"It's a bit out of my range-" She admitted. "-I'm no favorite of His Majesty, and I doubt I have the capacity to capture his attention like the others do. It pleases me enough to be at his service and to maintain a friendship with my fellow consorts here-"
But that was a lie. Coronis had always felt a helplessness in her position. There had been hopes and dreams that had been forced to push down in lieu of this position....things she'd suppressed for her own survival.
Real love, for one.

The difference between the ladies-in-waiting was almost as obvious as that of their mistresses. On one side, you had women instructed to assure Coronis was kept comfortable, to insure that her lodgings were quiet and peaceful. A maintenence crew of ladies insuring a zen-like place of peace.
And then there were Kikia's attendants; trying very hard to reel in their unpredictable charge. Most likely, the extra family members had been sent to reign her in.
Coronis smiled politely, letting Kikia go on. "I did read somewhere that having trees outside the window can help a sick person recover faster-" She said, following her in to sit at the table. "-but I'm afraid I'm a bit clueless when it comes to medicinal herbs and plants. I'm sure you can educate me on it sometime."
Dinner was served. The tasters insured neither meal was poisoned, and the ladies were able to eat as they liked. Coronis enjoyed the dishes prepared, and ate slowly, with grace.
And letting Kikia command the majority of the conversation, only speaking up to answer or ask questions, Coronis had time to let her mind concern itself with other things. I wonder how long the chief eunuch intends to keep Kikia from His Majesty. She wondered. He clearly wants to enjoy her. But given those at the top-
She didn't like to think about it. Her older sister was one of the top ranked consorts, a titled one. And likely she had not wanted to share His Majesty with anyone. At the very least, it was easy to keep the lesser consorts away.

Coronis had finished her own lunch by the time Consort Kikia came to visit. Announced (rather grumpily) by her head lady-in-waiting, Coronis did as she always did and invited Kikia to join her for a cup of tea.
"Thank you for the gift." She said politely. Even if Kikia was eccentric, she was otherwise fairly harmless. Yes sometimes her spirited antics got her in a bit of trouble, but no more than a slap on the hand. And she was generous....albeit sometimes more than her budget would allow. "I appreciate you thinking of us in spite of the Emperor's busy schedule."
It would mean good and fresh seafood, and red meat for a change. Coronis often preferred vegetarian dishes along with seafood, but beef once in a while could be a worthwhile treat.
"Since the Emperor intended it for you, why don't you join us for supper this evening instead? Since your evening is now free, it would be a shame not to enjoy some of what he sent for your sake."

"....I suppose so."
But Coronis kept something quiet regarding the time served. Yes, by the time a woman turned twenty-five, provided she hadn't given His Majesty children yet, she was free to leave.
Except in her case-
"Mostly, I would be sad about leaving, since the ladies here have been so kind to me." Coronis changed the subject, and her attendants beamed. "Sometimes it can be difficult to make friends but I feel the ladies-in-waiting provided for us are such companions I could never hope to replace."
A compliment directed to Kikia's ladies as well. It was not easy to be a lady-in-waiting, but they seemed to be doing quite well with their energetic mistress.

Ah, there it is.
"I'm afraid I'm only here as a boon to the Marquis family." Coronis demurred. "His Majesty often extends the title of consorts to families who provide loyal services to the crown. I'm merely here by exception."
And because her brother, the scheming Marquis in question, wanted Coronis somewhere she could be watched and controlled....not unlike their sister Stella. Except she was far more controlling, and....thankfully, in another palace to avoid public bullying.
"And yourself?" She asked politely. "Your own family must have been overjoyed when the position was offered."

For Kikia? Perhaps the future was so easy to write.
But for Coronis, the difference was that Kikia's path was one of bamboo....flexible, and capable of growth. Her own; a path of stone.
"I appreciate your kind advice."
Even if she could never really follow through on it.
Perhaps her ladies-in-waiting caught on that Coronis was uncomfortable with the topic and one of them interjected. "My lady, did you want some more to eat?" She asked, seeing her plate was almost empty. "Or are you feeling tired?"
"Ah....you're right-" Coronis noticed. "-I think I am getting somewhat weary. I shouldn't trespass on your kindness any longer." Coronis stood. "Thank you for the invitation Lady Kikia. I will do my utmost to return the favor at my own residence."

Coronis was polite in her exit, wishing them all a good evening. At the same time, she understood that there was a significant difference between herself and Kikia.
Kikia still had hope.
______
The following morning was bright and sunny. A performance was due to take place in the central courtyard for the amusement of the consorts. Coronis chose not to attend.
Mostly because her sister would be there, and she was not so foolish as to invite trouble by tempting Stella into doing something.
Instead, Coronis was reading. A collection of autobiographies and histories. Given her upbringing, an education meant her need for mental stimulus was always being fed, and she had plenty of reading material cycling through her palace. Sometimes as gifts, most of the time loaned from other nobles.

"...."
Nineteen years old. Only just becoming a woman in her prime, and yet already secluded here so quickly. And yet they were still denying her an opportunity to be with His Majesty?
.....yes. It was not the lesson taught as children, where girls were expected to give their all to their husbands. There was no practical lesson to teach such cruel reality.
"....It would be so wonderful if you had a child soon." She said, choosing to brighten up the atmosphere. "You're still very young, and very beautiful, so I'm sure if you had the opportunity, it would be a blessing to all the women here. None of us have heard a child's laughter in some time."
It was dangerous to have children in the palace. But it was also the dearest hope of many the consorts. It was a promise of improving their positions, as well as carrying on His Majesty's legacy.
