Not to get too discourse ramble-y on here but I just need to scream for a minute.
I hate that when defending of taboos in fiction some people will make such a giant distinction between "pornography" and just portraying it. Like the two are somehow oh so different and there isn't a grey area. Especially when it comes to media made to process trauma or portray someone's lived experiences. Sometimes porn can be made or used to process trauma. And while porn is not sex ed, some porn can be made inspired by the creator's lived experiences. And even porn that is entirely fantasy can be argued to be a representation of that person's experience of sexuality. These things are far from mutually exclusive. And even if it isn't the creator's experiences, it very much still could resonate with an audience that sees their own experiences in it in a way. Or be used to explore experiences other have but you haven't. Yes, even if it is "pornography."
And then it's like, I understand the difference in comfort someone would have with a 250 page novel about a coming of age story with a two page sex scene between teenagers vs a porn without plot fanfiction about two teenage characters on ao3. But to police it, what page count makes it okay? At what word count and amount of other buildup does it become no longer "pornography"? Or what is the page count that separates a story about someone with a fawn response to trauma with a sexually abusive partner from a noncon porn story? Or what runtime separates a drama about an incestuous couple from incest porn? Or what runtime separates a slasher film from torture porn? Or what panel count separates a drama comic about a teacher and student in an inappropriate relationship from drawn teacher/student pornography? Where is the line with this?
This is especially tricky because a lot of current arguments for banning books about minority experiences will call any and all portrayals of sex "pornography" and then people online will echo similar sentiment, but then others who see that as bullshit will make their own version with the line they draw in ways that feel hypocritical to me. And even if there was a clear place to draw that line, "pornography" isn't any less of a form of media. "Pornography" and the things people defend the "non-pornography" media for being are not at all mutually exclusive. Just because something crosses the line into porn in your opinion, doesn't make it immoral to create or consume and that stigma is just as a much a form of censorship. And there is no way to contribute to that stigma without giving more power to the people who think every single portrayal is porn.
And I don't just mean this is a proshipper/antishipper discourse context. Honestly I'm so tired of those labels and the discourse around it so much and only use the label proship because that is what people see my opinions as. I don't personally identify with the term moreso than that. Proship/antiship discourse is just a chronically online mircocosm of much larger issues with censorship, stigmatization of sexuality and kink, misunderstandings about psychology, reactionary beliefs and so many other larger issues at play. A while back I saw people talking about book bannings and booktok discourse where people were stitching tiktoks about antishippers taking them as the people in support of certain types of book bans, because that is what it looked like to them with little context on fandom culture. Because these things are the same.
Like at this point, to me my beliefs aren't "proship", they're part of being for freedom of expression. Like shipping discourse is just one tiny piece of a much larger puzzle, and I don't know what "proship" can say about me that isn't already said by my beliefs about how people view art and fiction as a whole. Everything I've said here applies to both chronically online fanfiction discourse and the larger discussions on taboo fiction and "weird art."

“I’m sorry I said a slur it was bad” -> 30 seconds
“Tommy you are a terrible person who manipulated me, you were basically an adult anyways, I never harassed your mom and texting her isn’t weird in fact I was kind to her, you accusing me and my friends of sexism is evil (he also referenced that this was fair and they have been told they were weird towards women by other parties in HIS OWN STREAM, backtracks in the video), you love child labor, you are racist, where are your receipts, but also you were my friend and you are a good person because you used to like me at some point BUT IF YOU DONT LIKE ME ANYMORE might as well take down every time you ever interacted with me and my family because it means you never liked me and btw you are kind but also I’m not sorry to you” -> NINE WHOLE MINUTES ON A MAIN CHANNEL VIDEO + A CRASHOUT LIVESTREAM OF THREE FUCKING HOURS
Chat we are back in the fucking building again 😭😭

also while I'm on this tangent and because I saw someone get a hate anon about this today:
you are not obligated to turn your personal internet spaces into a public bulletin board.
if I was painting a decorative mural on a wall and someone came up and told me, "that's a waste of space! we should cover that wall with posters that raise awareness of [insert activism cause of the day]!" it would not matter if I agreed with their cause. I would tell them to find a different wall to hang posters on. Spaces for spreading current issues should exist and people are welcome to make them. But we do not have to cover every wall in the world in posters. It is also valuable for people to be able to walk past a mural and feel uplifted and like their community is creative and vibrant.
you do not owe anyone your spaces, even if you agree with their cause. you do not owe anyone space on your blog. if you want to make a bulletin board, all power to you. but there is no cause so worthy that it should be used to guilt people into giving up their personal spaces.

it's ironic that accounts saying they "block klk shippers" and "don't want to interact with proshippers" can always find something to say in my posts/reblogs. while I, a kaeluc shipper, personally have the "ragbros" tag blocked because I do not want to accidentally share something with a romantic context in mind, in case op is uncomfortable with that.
because I know how to put my own, as well as respect other's, boundaries in online spaces.
because I know that every single thing isn't meant for me and everyone has their own preferences.
because I know it's not only weird but also rude to go out of my way to put someone down for their interests or hard work.
but sure, call me the immoral one here for liking a fictional relationship between two fictional characters—who, keep in mind, I first started liking on the grounds that they were previously sworn brothers.

(Different anon than the last) See I agree with most of what you’re saying, but I think there is a genuine empathy problem and you’re really misguided when you say it’s just teenagers on the internet. That’s what I think until I go on these blogs and see these people that go “won’t someone think of the poor fandom lovers :(“ are in fact NOT teenagers, but full grown women - 35/40 years old. It’s pathetic, selfish, and people can be mad at more than two things at once - including full grown adults on tumblr who are making this situation about their own feelings and taking focus off the victims to make it about themselves
ok yeah i won’t disagree with you on this one, i personally haven’t seen a lot of people being like “idc i’m gonna support his works anyways” but also even if people aren’t outright saying that it can still be implied through actions/words. i think if we wanna do something productive with our anger we should honestly be turning our attention towards the industry that allows people (particularly men but even in the neil gaiman case he was assisted by a vile woman so yknow) to get away with these things and how dangerous that kind of power really is. i don’t think any of that is the fault of fans posting online, i do think if you’re making this situation about Blorbo From Your Shows you gotta just. idk get in touch with reality look at the bigger picture something like that
edit: looking back at this and realizing i said “[none] of that fault” is on fans, let me clarify that the people we choose to platform does matter and if you are choosing to platform harmful people then fandom is absolutely complicit in that and they can be perpetuators of that harm. like i said before this is more about the general reader base who had no fucking clue and how that’s not the most pressing issue here + not the only reason neil was in that position of power in the first place

thank you for bearing with my purgatory posting and i'm also glad to see i'm not the only one who still has this fungus eating away at my brain matter. seeing other purgatory posting in the tag makes me feel better lmfao.
i'm not done btw, posting will (probably) continue as i revisit vods. wanted to extend a thanks in the interim, since i know how contentious the event was in the moment. i kinda thought the general consensus was most people hated thinking about it, but there's been a weird amount of engagement and yknow other people talking. makes me happy to know i'm not alone here!
#qsmp#qsmp purgatory#shut up vic#block game brainrot#it also provides me the opportunity to get a new perspective on some moments as well#like watching the jaiden spawnkilling thing the first time i missed some nuance in bbh's tone when he offered to walk her to her body#rewatching i heard them :D#i'll probably rewatch his conversation with slime from the same day at some point to refresh my perspective on that#but i think i'll wait on that; that convo makes me super biased lmfao#i'm aware of my biases at least :D and dw i won't bring old discourse back#tbh i never rly posted discourse much to begin with? just that one list and analysis of time stamps LMFAO#but yea i won't be bringing that back to the tag even if it's back in my brain#i PINKY SWEAR; i'm not one to start fights on posts or blogs that aren't mine#i block and then if i REALLY have something to say i shittalk them into my bathroom mirror#bc i know neither of us are gonna snitch >:D#long tags#it's also nice to look at with the benefit of hindsight and reflection#bc i know everything that happened; i was there watching it live#bolas are unreliable narrators#i'll probably see about going through some of the other team's povs as well just to see#it's interesting is all! and i finally have the time to sink my teeth into it properly#since we aren't having to keep up with like six streams a day#it's been so long sinve this server took a proper breather i'm appreciating it for all it's worth#((yes i wish the circumstances were better but they aren't; we take what we can get lmao))#ok anyway love u byeeeeeeee purgatory posting will probably continue#i'll tag as appropriately as i can; lmk if there are further tags i should add#i prefer people don't block Me if they hate these; i'll make u a tag to block if u ask i promise <3

"go to a real lgbt space" as an argument for why aspec people arent queer is just kind of funny to me because every lgbt organization i know of, both big ones & local ones from my town, have included asexual & aromantic ppl . maybe there is some kind of hostility towards aspecs in the gay clubs here that im not aware of but i really doubt that

Actually speaking of that last post's target webcomic: i think the fact that a lot of terfy stuff puts ALL the crux on "Men" not Passing is like, among all the other things they do, inherently vile.
the idea that womanhood hinges on being cute/beautiful is one of the core ideals that feminism (the real kind not the rad kind) seeks to Eliminate, the notion that they exist only if they're pretty enough and that men are, inversely, inherently ugly, AND that being "ugly" is something to be mocked and shamed is toxic and puts a lot of (cis) women under the bus in the process.

really funny seeing a post from a nsfw blog asking people to put their age in their bio (you know. a normal request to minimize interaction with minors as much as knowledge allows) be co-opted into ‘you don’t owe anyone any info stay safe from doxing.’ like um! idk maybe it’s just bc i hang around nsfw spaces but those are separate ideas!
