Jen stops to catch her breath. It is a long hike from the carpark, made even longer by the muggy heat of the midlands. She tosses her bags onto the scorched grass and wipes sweat from her brow, wheezing. “Christ. Is it much further, do you think?”

“No, Jenny. Get a grip. You’re barely carrying anything, anyway.”

She looks at me. My own bags, including a sleeping bag and a cheap, compact tent, and all of Evie’s things, too, are over my shoulders. The straps dig into my shoulders and hands so much that I anticipate welts, but I don’t dare complain. She is standing right there. 

“I’ll take a bag, Jen,” she says. “I have nothing now, and honestly, I feel really bad.”

“Oh, thanks,” Jen passes her a backpack, which Evie slings over her shoulder, smiling sympathetically. “I get it, though. It’s hot, isn’t it?”

“Yeah, it’s hot. I also just hate hauling my arse about for miles, regardless of the kind of weather. I’m just dead lazy,” she throws a judgemental eye in my direction as Evie rushes to join Claire and Shane. “And it seems that certain girls’ bags are more important than others around here, right, Jude?”

“She was struggling,” I protest. “It didn’t feel right to let her carry them all the way. You could have asked Shane, or someone, if you were finding it so hard.”

“That’s the privilege of being fancied by Jude Turner, hm?”

I roll my eyes. “Whatever.”

“I hope you’re going to be wise this weekend…” she starts up, but I’m already walking away. 

“C’mon, you’re holding me up!”

She groans and drags herself behind me, toward the towering festival entrance peeking over the horizon.

As a security guard who has read the first two Murderbot books, Murderbot has been the number one most realistic security specialist character I have ever seen in media so far 😭

If you, an off-shift cashier at pet smart, see me deescalating a situation and decide you’re gonna drop your untrained uninformed ass in there with zero context or skills and “help” because I look small and helpless, then all you’re doing is increasing my likelihood of getting hurt while increasing my paperwork load by like two hours, and I’m gonna hate you the entire time. What if the peak lords concluded that the most likely answer to the mystery of Shen Qingqiu's behavior is not that he's possessed now (because they checked and all the tests came out negative), but that he must have actually been possessed before?

No one thought to check him before, after all. They just figured he was an asshole. But then he suffers a qi deviation, almost dies, but comes back nicer. Only slightly lacking in context for his own past behavior and lifestyle, too.

It fits remarkably well, doesn't it? All this time the real Shen Qingqiu must have been trying to free himself from a demonic spirit that took possession of him in his youth! It was the demon who was the asshole, dragging his poor host to brothels, alienating his sect siblings so that they wouldn't investigate him too closely, abusing his disciples and probably weakening the sect from within as part of some nefarious plot!

But then the real Shen Qingqiu finally managed to beat back the demon himself, even being gracious enough not to point out what happened to his martial siblings and so save the sect's face. What a guy.

Columbo and the Knight (1984)

put me in the universe where Columbo ran through the 1980s and had a crossover episode with Knight Rider. I think they deserved it, and I am not just saying that because they're my two favorite Old Shows. @telebeast wrote a little fanfic blurb about it and I HAD to visualize it into a comic (which is also the longest comic I have finished thus far at five pages...), so writing credit goes to them.
