It’s important to remember that thinking of anything in terms of personality or identity as a “spectrum” is not the same as thinking of it as a “scale”.

I feel it is common to mistake the former for the latter, because again, a linear mode is much easier to visualize and comprehend than an actual spectrum, that does not exist in a linear fashion.

Let me say that again, but more simply:

A spectrum does not exist in a linear fashion.

The desire to maintain a binary way of thinking rests comfortably in the understanding that a spectrum still exists as a linear measurement. The problem is, that desire for ease keeps us squarely in the same limited thinking as the previously accepted definition of a binary.

When talking about subjects around personality, minded-ness and identity, such as empathy, autism and gender, we have to remember that understanding what it means to exist on a “spectrum” means that we do not exist between two points.

We are exiting the one-dimensional, linear definition of self. We emigrate our understanding to a two-dimensional, perhaps even three-dimensional spectral understanding of who we are as conscious beings on this planet of existence. Yes, that applies to every single person, ever. There is no exception.

Perhaps this is what frightens people. To understand that there is no true “difference”. We are all a part of the same miasma. To dare to even imagine that our sense of self is impossible to relegate to a few basic definitions that fit neatly between two points is so overwhelming that it becomes terrifying.

Perhaps that is why true freedom is so hard to achieve. Without boundaries, we have no idea where we’re going, or where we might end up.

But this is why we learn. Communicate. Educate. Work together to better understand each-other. Forget about the safety of the personal echo-chamber. That’s the true fear. The silo of self-reflection that becomes a tinny cacophony, so much so that we become deaf to what will ultimately save us - the airy space that exists between us, where we can see outside ourselves, and into the mirrors that we all hold behind our eyes, peering into the souls that talk back to us, without words, only pure being.

Forget about the binary. Forget about the scale quietly disguised as a spectrum.

We are more than that. We are a prism.

This is a beautiful flag and a cool community that I may never understand but that doesn't mean I can't love them.

Anon who wrote about character: wasn't alluding to tinyteapot, that this fandom has many fics in which "Clinton" is a placeholder for any character trait the author wants to use and although I like AUs that are what ifs, (like what if they met later/earlier/had different jobs ecc), a LOT of them don't have a sliver of characterization similar to them(except the onnes clearly 4fun) (like Hillary is so pathetically weak or some other stuff). Like: a very good AU is Love song or the same old thing
