Background:

- Lydia Laidir, born into slavery in the Imperium, was inadvertently freed when the ship she was serving on was attacked by the Felicisma Armada, and eventually taken in by Isabela and the Lords of Fortune. Isabela gave her the affectionate nickname "Rook(ie)", and in a effort to cope with her upbringing she sought to reinvent herself under this new name. Overtime, the name Lydia became an extremely personal aspect to her, and by the time of Veilguard the only people who know her real name are Isabela and Anders (her magical mentor), and she goes by Rook exclusively to everyone else, even her partner Lucanis.

Headcanons:

- After the events of Veilguard, Spite stops reflecting Lucanis and instead takes the form of a cat (credit for this galaxy brained hc goes to @/ravioliage)

- As a mage growing up in Rivain and mentored by Anders and Justice, Lydia has learned to hear Spite in a similar way to Emmrich 💜 This makes many situations both more and less awkward.

- Shortly after the events of Veilguard, Lydia was able to pair Lucanis with a baby wyvern of his own, who he named Dolce (credit for the name goes to @/iisadiya), and when there isn't a pen outside or there's bad weather, she curls up on whatever furniture the inn provides in their room and absolutely destroys it with her claws and venom <3 Lydia and Lucanis have, on multiple occasions, had to soothe a very distressed innkeeper and pay a small fortune in damages 😔

3:14 a.m. and his fists are always red, not from love, and still you leave the porch light on. still you wait. still you let him ruin the silence with his breathing.

and he looks at you like he's half-expecting you to tell him to leave. but you don’t. you never do. you let him in.

you don’t ask where he’s been. you don’t ask whose blood that is. you just flick the light off behind him and put a glass of water in his hand like it matters.

he smells like smoke and grave-dirt. like something dug up too early, or maybe too late.

his chest rises unevenly, and you press your hand to it— gently, like you’re trying to steady something that never learned how to be still. he lets you. that’s the strangest part. he lets you. as if the heart beneath hadn’t been rewired with rage.

it’s not the lazarus pit that haunts him anymore. it’s this. your quiet. your staying. your awful, unbearable kindness.

he tells himself it’s nothing. a habit. a mistake. a misfire in the dark. something cold seeking something warm.

but he stays longer each time. sits closer. breathes easier.

and when your hand finds his—without fear— he closes his eyes,. just for a second. and in that second, he lets the lie go.

because this—you—feels more like resurrection than anything that ever touched the lazarus pit.

"Aw, Agnes sweetie, is your nose dry again? Come here, let's get you some tissues and clean you up. Keep your head forward." soothed the human adult.

"Can I change my shirt too?"

"Of course buddy."

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! SHE NEED MEDICAL-!"

"Would you zip it?! She's fine! It's just a bloody nose from her nose being so dry--the inside skin is sensitive and a small blood vessel was probably ruptured. It sounds and looks bad but honestly it's not a serious thing."

"...are you sure?" they fearfully asked.

"Positive. I get the same thing all the time when sick. It'll go away in a few minutes. Now for future reference just give the kid lots of tissues and have them hold it to their nose. Keep their head facing forward; if they tilt back the blood will flow into their throats, and if they tilt forward they'll bleed more."

"...understood."

"Good. Now maybe go apologize to Agnes for traumatizing her for the past 5 minutes."

"That's a good idea."

"I'll give her some of my blood as an apology."

"...that's nice but maybe don't."
