What is Splitting?
Splitting is a common BPD experience where our brains see things in extremes like black or white, all good or all bad.
For example:
Someone might feel like your favourite person in the world. Perfect, safe, everything you need.
Then they do something small (or even nothing at all) and suddenly you feel the complete opposite, like they’re terrible or unsafe.
This can happen with people, situations, or even with yourself. (Yes, self-splitting is real. Suddenly feeling like you’re awful, unworthy, or incapable, even if nothing has changed.)
Splitting isn’t always triggered by something specific. It can happen randomly because our emotional brain is hyper-alert to potential danger or abandonment.
How to Cope with Splitting
You can’t always stop a split from happening, but you can manage how you respond so you don’t do things you regret later.
1. Ground & Pause
Use mindfulness or grounding techniques to calm your nervous system.
TIPP, RESISTT, ACCEPTS, and urge surfing (DBT distress tolerance skills) are really helpful for riding the emotional wave.
2. Keep Reminders Handy
Make a list of reasons you value your loved ones and your relationships. Maybe screenshots of them saying they love you, or letters.
Make a second list for yourself: your accomplishments, strengths, and things you like about yourself. Even if it doesn’t stop the split, it can keep you from acting on the extremes.
3. Step Back if Needed
Take a break or create some space.
Let the person know you might be less responsive for a while (you don’t have to give details).
4. Reflect
After the emotional wave passes, look at why you split.
Did the person actually do something hurtful (like lying again)? That might signal a bigger relationship issue.
Or was it a need for reassurance? In that case, the feeling is valid but not necessarily about the other person’s actions. (See my post about seeking reassurance!)
5. Communicate (If You Can)
You can say something like: “I know this isn’t fully rational, but I feel hurt/upset about ___.”
Sharing your feelings calmly can release the pressure and help your loved ones understand what you need.
Remember that splitting doesn’t make you bad or broken. It’s a survival response. With skills and self-awareness, you can ride the wave and protect yourself and your relationships.

Well, Link.
You and your precious kingdom did it, didn't you? You colonized my land, you overpowered my people, you imprisoned me for thousands of years.
I bet you even thought you killed me, didn't you?
When I swallowed that stone, when I said I would give up my mind, body, and soul to defeat you, I meant every word of it. You know I did. And maybe you thought I failed.
You buried me too shallow. Even without my body and mind, my soul is still here. Perhaps I've broken the cycle, perhaps I haven't. All I know is that I have once more crawled out of the pathetic hole that you call my grave.
I would've thought there'd be a timeline where you realize how tyrannical your endeavor was. Where you realized that Hyrule was never safer with the kingdom, just wrapped around your finger. I sought to free "your people". If you call that "the darkness within my heart", then so be it. I will choose to close my eyes and let the night thrive.
I'm already here. I'm already back. Perhaps when this form fades, I will return again. Even if you cannot see me, know that I am out here. Wherever there is you, I will be there too.

got really into reading item descriptions on this playthrough. anyway did you know the silent princess is one of the only raw materials with a cooking effect to not explicitly list that effect in its description

slightly furious reminder that fish do in fact feel pain and do in fact experience fear and distress when in pain since people seem to love spreading the myth that fish don't feel pain. what is it with people assuming a creature is incapable of feeling pain or emotion just because it doesn't have complex facial muscles. come on gang

First off, spin this wheel.
You just landed on one of 200 fandoms that have been very popular somewhere on Tumblr over the years. Topics were chosen either from appearing on a @fandom end-of-year recap or from my own long (long, long) site memories before that.
also all of these fandoms are definitely things that really exist in the real world and none of them are Tumblr creations

WAIT
I JUST REMEMBERED HEARING AN ELON MUSK QUOTE WHERE HE TALKS ABOUT HOW HE BELIEVES CHESS IS "TOO SIMPLE" OR WHATEVER AND HE SAID HIS FAVORITE GAME WAS A GAME CALLED "POLYTOPIA"
Tumblr media
I JUST REMEMBERED THAT IVE PLAYED POLYTOPIA
It being Elon's favorite game (or at least one so important to him that his biographer dedicates a lot of time to it) is.....really really funny.
Basically, imagine Civilization, but as a mobile game. So like if Civilization Revolution was even more dumbed down (that's a Civilization insult. That's devastating. It's devastated right now). For what it's worth, it's not a bad game. On the contrary, from what I could tell in the little bit of time I played it, it's a perfectly competent game with good design. But it's not a deep game by any means. I played through it once, won easily on my first go, then saw that the other playable characters had barely any differences between them.
Like, not to imply you can judge a book by its cover, but here's what it looks like
Tumblr media
I came across an article by Dave Karpf discussing this exact thing, and I think it describes it wonderfully
