This isn’t a one-to-one recreation of that dialogue but it’s based on that as a framework/premise

Batman dropped down into the room behind a pair of figures—a teenage boy and a slumped adult—letting his landing create an audible thump to alert them of his presence.

If the teen noticed, he didn’t react. Even as Bruce approached, he continued to stare impassively at the wheezing figure on the ground, an old wooden bat with flaking green paint on its side loosely held in his right hand. Bruce had already suspected who the figure would be since he arrived, but seeing the Joker so broken was still bizarre. No laughing, no schemes. He didn’t even seem to be attempting to escape his binds, just… lying there, almost as if pinned in place.

Bruce paused a step behind the teen. “I don’t know what the Joker did to you, but this isn’t the right way to go about this.”

The teen scoffed, and Bruce felt a painful lurch in his chest as he was reminded oh so strongly of his son Jason. “And what, let him go kill more people?”

“I know he deserves to face justice, but not like this. Everyone deserves a right to fair trial. No one person should be judge, jury, and executioner.”

The teen turned to look at him with glowing green eyes, and Batman felt himself freeze. He had faced gods before, yet even using that as a comparison felt like an understatement. The boy’s eyes belonged to someone far older than his teenage form implied, and they radiated power. Inevitability.

When the teen—no, the entity—spoke again, his words carried an unearthly echo. “Perhaps, but I’m not acting for just myself.” He paused, glanced down at the Joker, then asked almost conversationally, “Do you know how many people he’s killed?”

Another pause, but before Bruce could even try to answer, the entity continued, “Eight hundred and fifty-six. He’s ended the lives of eight hundred and fifty-six human souls. I can tell you about every single one, if you want. About who they were, what their dreams were before he killed them. About the pain they felt at his hands.”

He punctuated the word ‘pain’ by raising up the wooden bat in his hands and ramming its end down onto the Joker’s arm. He let out a wheeze, muffled by the gag in his mouth.

“I have a duty to my people. I am the King of the In-Between and of all the souls that pass through it—even ones whose stays were as brief as his. I am the rightful arbiter of his fate. And with that power, I sentence him to death.”

He raised the bat again, adjusting his grip so he’d hit with the side rather than the end this time, then paused and let out a chuckle. “Of course, just because it’s based on some justice doesn’t mean I can’t have a bit of fun with it too.” He swung the bat down, slamming it into the Joker’s side, then hooked it under the clown’s torso and flicked him up through the air to slam into the wall. “We all really hate this guy.”

With the entity’s attention fully turned away from him as he sauntered towards the Joker’s slumped figure, Bruce could finally unfreeze himself.

Even if the Ghost King did have the right to pass judgement on Joker, Bruce still couldn’t let torture go on like this. He wouldn’t win a direct fight, but he could hopefully at least grab the Joker and bring him over to the police. Carefully, he reached for some of the smoke bombs and batarangs on his belt and readied his grapple. He’d have to do this very, very fast.

But before he could move, another figure entered the scene. Red Hood, emerging from the shadows on the far side of the room, an unexpected bit of a pep to his step.

“Nice to see someone else who gets that that bastard needs to die. But if I may make a suggestion, how ‘bout you use a crowbar instead of that old bat? It’d be a bit more… fitting.”

one of my favourite aspects of supernatural that you very rarely see in paranormal shows is that sam and dean are already versed in the world they live in. there’s no sudden discovery of ghosts and demons and now they have to learn about them along with the audience; they are born into it and already know all about it. it allows the audience to follow their personal story instead of also trying to figure out this new world and its rules

the first season is full of knowledge we never see them learn; “w*ndigoes are in the minnesota woods or- or northern michigan. i’ve never even heard of one this far west.” […] “great. well then this [his gun] is useless.” (1x02), “you don’t break a curse. you get the hell out of its way.” (1x08), d: “it’s a god. a pagan god, anyway.” […] “the annual cycle of its killings? and the fact that the victims are always a man and a woman. like some kind of fertility right.” […] s: “the last meal. given to sacrificial victims. d: “yeah, i’m thinking a ritual sacrifice to appease some pagan god.” (1x11)

almost every episode in the first season is a monster they’ve faced before that they then explain to the audience in a way that should feel patronising; like it’s the same speech given over and over again but instead, the audience almost feels included in the knowledge. it’s stated with such an innate confidence and comfort in said knowledge that it feels like we already knew it too; “spirits and demons don't have to unlock doors. if they want inside, they just go through the walls.” […] “the claws, the speed that it moves; could be a skinwalker, maybe a black dog.” (1x02), “it's biblical numerology. you know noah's ark, it rained for forty days. the number means death.” (1x04), “no no no, not the reaper, a reaper. there's reaper lore in pretty much every culture on earth, it goes by 100 different names.” […] “you said it yourself that the clock stopped, right? reapers stop time. and you can only see 'em when they're coming at you which is why i could see it and you couldn't.” (1x12)

they already know and, at least in the first season, already have what they need to kill whatever they’re hunting; already know to salt and burn bones for spirits, fire for a w*ndigo, exorcisms for demons, a silver bullet to the heart for shapeshifters. there’s only three times in the entire first season that they run into something new to them; 1x14 when sam gets his first vision that leads him to another psychic, 1x16 when dean calls caleb for help on the sigil he put together and he tells him about daevas, and 1x20 when they find out vampires are real- and they only don’t know that bc john thought they were hunted to extinction and not worth mentioning

(there’s also technically two half instances if you count one of them knowing something the other doesn’t - sam figuring out the tulpa in 1x17 and dean already knowing about the shtriga in 1x18 - but those still rely on sam and dean having prior knowledge)

even when they’re uncertain about facing something, it’s not bc they don’t know what it is; it’s precisely bc they know what it is and acknowledge that it’ll be a difficult hunt (“i don't know, man. this isn't our normal gig. i mean, demons, they don't want anything, just death and destruction for its own sake. this is big. and i wish dad was here.” 1x04)

so much of the tension in paranormal shows typically comes from the main character(s) not knowing what is happening to them/the people around them and having to find out how to resolve it. supernatural is unique in that it operates more like a police procedural. the tension comes from solving the clues and identifying patterns to figure out who (what) the killer is and intercepting before they can take another victim

it’s such a different tone to go for when compared to other shows that came both before, during, and after its run. it sets sam and dean on even footing with each other since they both have the same knowledge going in, and it puts them in a place of authority usually reserved for an outside character

the shows i compare spn to most is charmed, buffy and teen wolf; every main character in those shows are brought into the paranormal world knowing nothing, putting them on the same level as the audience, and they have their mc interact with others already knowledgeable about that world in order to overcome their problem/monster of the week. the audience organically learns about this new world as the characters learn about it. it’s a sound writing strategy that prevents “as we already know”-style exposition but something that complicates it is if your world building isn’t unique or intriguing enough, this slow introduction can become boring

we’ve seen shows like these before; sitting through the same tropes of characters learning to use their powers, struggling with no longer feeling normal/relating to the regular world around them, and not knowing how much they can trust the people already involved in this new world gets repetitive. all three shows eventually reach the same level of comfort with their new world that spn starts with but if the characters aren’t enough to draw you in, you can end up dropping it before they reach that point (and often, before the overarching plot can really kick in and evolve the show beyond the villain of the week format)

it’s the superhero origin movie in tv format; dragged out and overplayed. dropping the audience into an established world of course comes with its own problems but you also have the benefit of pre-existing established character dynamics that let the audience slot in like they’ve always been there instead of just getting to know all the characters while the characters also get to know each other

sam and dean already knowing about the supernatural lets the audience immediately get to the core of the story; the conflict between sam and dean, the search for their father, and the mystery of what killed their mother

really an inexplicable train of thought but i feel like taako is the kind of person who in a modren era au would just decide to go to a shooting range and learn how to shoot a pistol for funsies, but would consider learning to spin the pistol all cool like they do in cowboy movies to be his first and foremost priority. like hes already bought a holster and the moment he is given a gun he immediately starts trying to twirl it. the instructor has to tell him to stop or theyll take the gun away from him. he keeps trying to lead the conversation back to it anyway because he really feels like theyre putting the cart before the horse here if hes learning how to shoot the gun before even knowing how to dramatically reholster it if he were to get in some sort of cowboy duel. hes actually really good at the shooting part but he gets kicked out of the class after his eighth guntwirling attempt in which he accidentally flicks the safety off mid twirl and shoots one of their light fixtures

Imagine Stone and Robotnik standing in the corner of some mandatory meeting or party and talking shit.

Robotnik could easily just look up the lives and secrets of everyone he sees at the event, but instead likes to point out people for his agent to observe and guess their lives for him.

Robotnik: "Him."

Stone: "hmmmm. He's not as rich as he's leading people to believe. In fact, he's bankrupt. The only reason no one has found out yet is because he's selling everything he owns to keep his house and car."

Robotnik: "How'd you reach that conclusion?"

Stone: "His shoes are worn down to the sole, and scuff marks are marked over with ink. It's hardly noticeable if you're not looking. A man who talks that loudly about such materialistic things wouldn't be caught dead wearing old shoes if he could help it."

Robotnik: "ha. Bullshit."

Stone: *shrugs.* "Only an educated guess Doctor. But the shoes rarely lie."

Robotnik: "hmm. Her."

Stone: "OH, she is 100% sleeping with her maid when her husband is out golfing."

Robotnik is both annoyed and impressed that Stone's observations are right about 91% of the time.

Something that gets me about the whole situation with the Ravens accusing Jean of fucking his way to a number for the perfect court is this: if the Ravens truly believed that why didn’t they try it themselves?

Or did they just throw those accusations around to make themselves feel better about ignoring what was really going on?

don't want to get into it on that one post but while it's true that there are a lot of complex reasons behind the way that the Library of Congress classifies information the way it does, it's ALSO true that a lot of information professionals have a lot of respect for/interest in AO3, to the extent that you will almost certainly encounter discussion of it in library school (I did). This is not to throw shade at the LOC OR to say its classifications are perfect (there are a number of movements to update its terminology to address the number of *isms in various subject categories) but to also point out that AO3's approach to metadata is genuinely impressive and effective enough to have the respect of professionals, not just cringe fandom people (I am both)

my 4 year old niece is at that stage of potty training where she understands the concept completely and is competent in performing the mechanics, but... sometimes she pees her pants.

We of course do not make a big deal of this, especially as her initial reaction was to be upset and sensitive about it. So we treat it like juice spilled on a shirt, just something to clean up, a little oopsie, but very mundane. Now, while it still upsets her, she is calmer and more able to ask for help and talk about it.

Anyway the other day she was going around to the adults (all family) and asking them to tell her stories of when they peed their pants, and then telling them about her latest pee accident. Everybody was some degree of willing to engage with her about it, but she was sort of doing it over and over, until everyone had been asked and told two or three times at least...

"You have to tell me a story. Of a time you peed your pants" asking again and again, every adult in the room. And then telling about her latest accident again.

So the second time she asked me, i told of a time i peed my pants , and then when she started to tell me her story i said "wait i'm not done with my story yet! Soooo, after i peed my pants, and i cleaned it up, i thought 'what could i have done different so that this doesn't happen again?' and do you know what i thought of? I thought, 'if i'm going to be busy for a while, like going on a car ride or watching a movie, i'll go sit on the toilet and just see if i have to pee first - even if i don't really feel like i need to - and then maybe that won't happen again!'"

and then when she told me her pee accident story, i said "and did you think of something to try that might keep that from happening again?" and she said "no," so i said "well why don't we think of some things now, together?" and we did.

and then she continued going around to the adults asking them to tell her stories of their bathroom accidents, but now she asked what they did to prevent it in the future, and shared her own plans for preventing accidents after she told her story, hearing some additional strategies and generally getting confirmation that she had good ideas to try herself.

Anyway, I think it's important to understand that little children, from the youngest ages, are already very earnestly trying to figure out how to be fully functioning humans -- and it's up to the people around them to figure out what it is that they are looking for, and to put it comfortably into their hands.
